Electric Field Gradient in Chiral and Tetrahedral Molecules within High-Order LRESC Formalism.

In this work, we present the electric field gradient (EFG) given by the linear response elimination of the small component (LRESC) scheme up to the 1/c4 order (c is the speed of light in vacuum) in CHFClX (X = Br, I, At) chiral molecules, together with CHF2Br and CH2FX (X = Br, I, At) tetrahedral systems. The former could be good candidates for further parity violation studies, especially when heavy atoms are surrounding. In this context, the LRESC scheme demonstrates effective applicability to large tetrahedral and chiral molecules that incorporate heavy elements, with relativistic effects playing a crucial role. The LRESC results of EFG exhibit an excellent agreement with those calculated at the four-component level, giving differences of only hundredths order in a.u. (atomic units) for the bromine nucleus and less than 0.1 a.u. for the iodine nucleus. Regarding the other nuclei, for the chiral molecules, there is a heavy atom effect on the light atom (HALA) for chlorine and fluorine atoms as the substituent halogen atom becomes heavier. Furthermore, the electronic part of the EFG for the central carbon and the fluorine nuclei presents an important dependence with the environment in the molecules under study. With accurate calculations of the EFG and tabulated nuclear quadrupole moment, the nuclear quadrupole coupling constant is obtained within the LRESC scheme, including for the first time correlation effects on the spin-dependent corrections with this methodology, providing results close to the experimental ones for Cl, Br, and I atoms. At the Hartree-Fock level, the differences are around 6% for Br and I nuclei, and at the density functional theory level with the LDA and PBE0 functionals, the differences are no more than 2%.

Rotational spectrum, structure, and quadrupole coupling of cyclopropylchloromethyldifluorosilane.

Cyclopropylchloromethyldifluorosilane, c-C3H5SiF2CH2Cl, has been synthesized, and its rotational spectrum has been recorded by chirped-pulse Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy. The spectral analysis of several isotopologues indicates the presence of two distinct conformations in the free-jet expansion, which are interconvertible through a rotation of the chloromethyl group. A partial substitution structure is presented for the lower energy conformation and is compared to the equilibrium structure obtained from quantum chemical calculations. Additionally, the presence of the chlorine nucleus leads to the rotational transitions splitting into multiple hyperfine components and χaa, a measure of the electric field gradient along the a axis, is unusually small at merely +0.1393(73) MHz. Various common abinitio and density functional theory methods fail to predict good quadrupole coupling constants (in the principal axis system) that adequately reproduce the observed hyperfine splitting, although diagonalizing the quadrupole coupling tensor from the principal axis system into a nucleus-centered axis system reveals that, overall, these methods calculate reasonably the electric field gradient about the chlorine nucleus. Finally, a total of nine electric dipole forbidden, quadrupole allowed transitions are observed in the rotational spectra of the parent species of the higher energy conformation and the 37Cl isotopologue of the lower energy conformation. These include those of x-type (no change in parity of Ka or Kc), which, to our knowledge, is the first time such transitions have been observed in a chlorine-containing molecule.

Anti‐Coronavirus Activity of Certain Herbacetin Derivatives, A Theoretical Study

AbstractFlavonoids are natural products commonly found in the human diet with anti‐viral activity. The electrochemical activity of flavonoids is effective in their inhibitory properties. Herbacetin is an anti‐coronavirus drug from the flavonoid family. To understand structure‐electrochemical activity relations, ab initio calculations on some selected herbacetin derivatives were carried out using Gaussian 09 in B3LYP/6‐311G*. The effect of the position and type of the various substituents in the ring A of the flavone backbone are considered. The oxygen charge density of the hydroxyl group on C8 (O8) in the considered herbacetins was compared using nuclear quadrupole coupling constants (NQCC) calculations. Results showed that the presence of the amino group in the ortho position of O8 has the most significant effect on increasing the charge density of the O8 atom (O8‐NQCC=9.23 MHz). Based on the proposed mechanism of these drugs, ortho‐amino herbacetin is expected to show a significant anti‐coronavirus effect. Comparison of calculated O8‐NQCCs of tangeretin and nobiletin with herbacetin shows that with the replacement of OH with OCH3, the charge density of oxygen atoms decreases (about 2 MHz). Therefore tangeretin and nobiletin have a lower drug effect than herbacetin. Natural bond orbital (NBO) results are in agreement with calculated NQCCs.

Accurate Experimental Structure of 1-Chloronaphthalene.

The structure of isolated 1-chloronaphthalene has been investigated in a supersonic expansion by high-resolution chirped-pulse Fourier transform microwave (CP-FTMW) spectroscopy in the 2-8 GHz frequency range. Accurate values of the rotational, centrifugal distortion, and nuclear quadrupole coupling constants for the only availabe conformer have been determined. The intensity of the spectrum allowed us to observe all the heavy atoms isotopologues in natural abundance, determining their rotational constants. From the extensive experimental dataset we derived accurate structures for 1-chloronaphthalene using different methodologies and compared with related compounds.

Formic Acid-Ammonia Heterodimer: A New Δ-Machine Learning CCSD(T)-Level Potential Energy Surface Allows Investigation of the Double Proton Transfer.

The formic acid-ammonia dimer is an important example of a hydrogen-bonded complex in which a double proton transfer can occur. Its microwave spectrum has recently been reported and rotational constants and quadrupole coupling constants were determined. Calculated estimates of the double-well barrier and the internal barriers to rotation were also reported. Here, we report a full-dimensional potential energy surface (PES) for this complex, using two closely related Δ-machine learning methods to bring it to the CCSD(T) level of accuracy. The PES dissociates smoothly and accurately. Using a 2d quantum model the ground vibrational-state tunneling splitting is estimated to be less than 10-4 cm-1. The dipole moment along the intrinsic reaction coordinate is calculated along with a Mullikan charge analysis and supports the mildly ionic character of the minimum and strongly ionic character at the double-well barrier.

Ammonia – Formic acid complex: internal rotation analysis, calculations, and new microwave measurements

New analysis and spectra are reported for the gas-phase ammonia-formic acid complex. Calculations to determine the theoretical barrier to internal rotation were conducted and led to the new internal rotation analysis of the dimer. Using the new analysis and calculations, 12 new lines were measured and assigned and included in the present analysis. This is the first internal rotation analysis for this complex. The measurements were made in the 7–22 GHz range using two Flygare-Balle type pulsed beam Fourier transform microwave (FTMW) spectrometers. The complex was analyzed as a hindered rotor and 20 A and 16 E state transitions were fit with the XIAM5 program. The rotational constants were determined to have the following values: A = 11970.19(9) MHz, B = 4331.479(4) MHz, and C = 3227.144(4) MHz. Rotational constants, quadrupole coupling constants, and internal rotor parameters were fit to the spectrum. Double resonance was used to verify line assignments and access higher frequencies. The barrier to internal rotation was found to be 195.18(7) cm−1. High level calculations are in good agreement with experimental values. The calculated V3 barrier values range from 168.3 to 212.8 cm−1.

Polar covalent apex-base bonding in borapyramidanes probed by solid-state NMR and DFT calculations.

Pyramidane molecules have attracted chemists for many decades due to their regular shape, high symmetry and their correspondence in the macroscopic world. Recently, experimental access to a number of examples has been reported, in particular the rarely reported square pyramidal bora[4]pyramidanes. To describe the bonding situation of the nonclassical structure of pyramidanes, we present solid-state Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) as a versatile tool for deciphering such bonding properties for three now accessible bora[4]pyramidane and dibora[5]pyramidane molecules. 11 B solid-state NMR spectra indicate that the apical boron nuclei in these compounds are strongly shielded (around -50 ppm vs. BF3 -Et2 O complex) and possess quadrupolar coupling constants of less than 0.9 MHz pointing to a rather high local symmetry. 13 C-11 B spin-spin coupling constants have been explored as a measure of the bond covalency in the borapyramidanes. While the carbon-boron bond to the -B(C6 F5 )2 substituents of the base serves as an example for a classical covalent 2-center-2-electron (2c-2e) sp2 -carbon-sp2 -boron σ-bond with 1 J(13 C-11 B) coupling constants in the order of 75 Hz, those of the boron(apical)-carbon(basal) bonds in the pyramid are too small to measure. These results suggest that these bonds have a strongly ionic character, which is also supported by quantum-chemical calculations.

Understanding Cu(i) local environments in MOFs via63/65Cu NMR spectroscopy.

The field of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) includes a vast number of hybrid organic and inorganic porous materials with wide-ranging applications. In particular, the Cu(i) ion exhibits rich coordination chemistry in MOFs and can exist in two-, three-, and four-coordinate environments, which gives rise to many structural motifs and potential applications. Direct characterization of the structurally and chemically important Cu(i) local environments is essential for understanding the sources of specific MOF properties. For the first time, 63/65Cu solid-state NMR has been used to investigate a variety of Cu(i) sites and local coordination geometries in Cu MOFs. This approach is a sensitive probe of the local Cu environment, particularly when combined with density functional theory calculations. A wide range of structurally-dependent 63/65Cu NMR parameters have been observed, including 65Cu quadrupolar coupling constants ranging from 18.8 to 74.8 MHz. Using the data from this and prior studies, a correlation between Cu quadrupolar coupling constants, Cu coordination number, and local Cu coordination geometry has been established. Links between DFT-calculated and experimental Cu NMR parameters are also presented. Several case studies illustrate the feasibility of 63/65Cu NMR for investigating and resolving inequivalent Cu sites, monitoring MOF phase changes, interrogating the Cu oxidation number, and characterizing the product of a MOF chemical reaction involving Cu(ii) reduction to Cu(i). A convenient avenue to acquire accurate 65Cu NMR spectra and NMR parameters from Cu(i) MOFs at a widely accessible magnetic field of 9.4 T is described, with a demonstrated practical application for tracking Cu(i) coordination evolution during MOF anion exchange. This work showcases the power of 63/65Cu solid-state NMR spectroscopy and DFT calculations for molecular-level characterization of Cu(i) centers in MOFs, along with the potential of this protocol for investigating a wide variety of MOF structural changes and processes important for practical applications. This approach has broad applications for examining Cu(i) centers in other weight-dilute systems.

Fourier-transform microwave spectroscopy of the ClSO radical.

Pure rotational transitions of the ClSO radical have been observed by Fourier-transform microwave spectroscopy. a-type and b-type transitions, for both 35Cl and 37Cl isotopologues, were detected, and the observed very complicated fine and hyperfine components were assigned well. The intensities of the observed spectra of the two isotopologues correspond to the ratio of the isotope abundances of 35Cl and 37Cl. A total of 21 molecular constants were determined precisely for both 35ClSO and 37ClSO, including the rotational constants, centrifugal distortion constants, electronic spin-rotation constants, nuclear spin-rotation constants, magnetic hyperfine constants, and quadrupole coupling constants of chlorine. The molecular constants show ClSO to have the 2A'' electronic ground state with an out-of-plane unpaired electron. The spin density of the chlorine atom is about 10.6%, which is similar to that of the fluorine atom for FSO, about 8%. Results of the ClSO radical are compared with those of other triatomic radicals with similar structures, the XSS, XSO, and XOO radicals with X = H, F, and Cl, leading to a conclusion that the ClSO radical is more like FSO, but fairly different from the FOO and ClOO radicals.

Partial Proton Transfer in the Gas Phase: A Spectroscopic and Computational Analysis of the Trifluoroacetic Acid - Trimethylamine Complex.

The 1:1 complex formed from trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) and trimethylamine (TMA) has been observed in the gas phase by rotational spectroscopy and further investigated by DFT and MP2 methods. Spectra of both the parent form and the -OD isotopologue have been obtained. The complex is structurally similar to a hydrogen bonded system, with the O-H bond directed toward the nitrogen of the TMA. However, both the spectroscopic and computational results indicate that it is intermediate between a hydrogen bonded complex and a proton-transferred ion pair. Two metrics are used to assess the degree of proton transfer from the acid to the base. The first is based on experimental 14N nuclear quadrupole coupling constants. Specifically, the component of the 14N nuclear quadrupole coupling tensor along the c-inertial axis of the complex, χcc, is 31% of the way between that of free TMA (no proton transfer) and that of TMAH+ (complete proton transfer). A second metric, adapted from that of Kurnig and Scheiner [Int. J. Quantum Chem. Quantum Biol. Symp. 1987, 14, 47-56], is based on calculated O-H and H-N distances and corroborates this description. These results indicate that the degree of proton transfer in TFA-TMA is very similar to that in the TMA complex of HNO3, which has been previously studied and for which the proton affinity of the conjugate anion (NO3-) is almost identical to that of CF3COO-. While the solid salt, TMAH+·CF3COO-, is an ionic plastic above 307 K and exhibits free rotation of the ions, no such motion is observed in the cold 1:1 gas phase adduct.

10-Valence-Electron C≡O and the 14-VE C≡Pt: Two Triple-Bonded Isoelectronic Families Differing by a dδ4 Ring.

10-VE A≡A' Diatomics, such as N≡N, C≡O, etc., have a strong σ2π4 triple bond plus a lone pair at each end. In our studies on 14-VE A≡B systems, such as C≡Pt, we find a similar bonding system plus a (5dδ)4 ring. Here, the A atom belongs to groups 13-17 and the B atom to groups 7-11. Also the BB' combinations, triatomics, such as PtCO or DsCO or uranyl, and longer chains, such as AuCN and [NC-Au-CN]-, are discussed. The δ ring directly contributes to nuclear quadrupole coupling constants, and DFT calculations using the BH and H or mPW1K functionals reproduce the experimental trends of the NQCC.

Field-stepwise-swept solid-state 127I NMR of 1,4-diiodobenzene

Field-stepwise-swept solid-state 127I NMR experiments of 1,4-diiodobenzene, C6H4I2, applied to a Zeeman-perturbed NQR region, have been presented. A series of QCPMG measurements is performed at T = 90 K with resonant frequencies of 271 MHz in the range of magnetic fields from 2.5 T to zero with the interval of 12 mT. The spectral simulation, in which a numerical calculation involves the diagonalization of the combined Zeeman-quadrupolar Hamiltonian, provides quadrupole coupling constant (CQ) = 1863(5) MHz and the asymmetry parameter (ηQ) = 0.04(2). The 127I NQR spectrum is observed at T = 90 K, which is consistent in the above experimental results.

Can simple 'molecular' corrections outperform projector augmented-wave density functional theory in the prediction of 35 Cl electric field gradient tensor parameters for chlorine-containing crystalline systems?

Many-body expansion (MBE) fragment approaches have been applied to accurately compute nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) parameters in crystalline systems. Recent examples demonstrate that electric field gradient (EFG) tensor parameters can be accurately calculated for 14 N and 17 O. A key additional development is the simple molecular correction (SMC) approach, which uses two one-body fragment (i.e., isolated molecule) calculations to adjust NMR parameter values established using 'benchmark' projector augmented-wave (PAW) density functional theory (DFT) values. Here, we apply a SMC using the hybrid PBE0 exchange-correlation (XC) functional to see if this can improve the accuracy of calculated 35 Cl EFG tensor parameters. We selected eight organic and two inorganic crystal structures and considered 15 chlorine sites. We find that this SMC improves the accuracy of computed values for both the 35 Cl quadrupolar coupling constant (CQ ) and the asymmetry parameter ( ) by approximately 30% compared with benchmark PAW DFT values. We also assessed a SMC that offers local improvements not only in terms of the quality of the XC functional but simultaneously in the quality of the description of relativistic effects via the inclusion of spin-orbit effects. As the inorganic systems considered contain heavy atoms bonded to the chlorine atoms, we find further improvements in the accuracy of calculated 35 Cl EFG tensor parameters when both a hybrid functional and spin-orbit effects are included in the SMC. On the contrary, for chlorine-containing organics, the inclusion of spin-orbit relativistic effects using a SMC does not improve the accuracy of computed 35 Cl EFG tensor parameters.

Ion Mobility in Hydroxy-Functionalized Ionic Liquids Depends on Cationic Clustering: Tracking the Alkyl Chain Length Behavior with Deuteron NMR Relaxation.

Observing and quantifying the like-charge attraction in liquids and solutions is still challenging. However, we showed that elusive cation-cation hydrogen bonding may govern the structure and interaction in hydroxyl-functionalized ionic liquids. Therefore, cationic cluster formation depends on the shape, charge distribution, and functionality of the ions. We demonstrated by means of solid-state 2H NMR spectroscopy that cationic clusters change the structure and dynamics of ionic liquids. With increasing alkyl chain length, we observed two deuteron quadrupole coupling constants for the OD groups, differing by about 30 kHz. The lower value was assigned to the cation-cation interaction, indicating that the average (c-c) hydrogen bonds are stronger than the (c-a) hydrogen bonds between the cation and the anion despite the repulsive and attractive Coulomb interaction in the first and latter cases. Ion mobility could be studied by 2H NMR spectroscopy, although the deuterons in the hydrogen-bonded clusters underwent fast exchange. Our results also showed that simple relaxation models are not applicable anymore and that anisotropic motion must be considered.

Noncovalent Interactions in the Molecular Geometries of 4-Methylthiazole···H2O and 5-Methylthiazole···H2O Revealed by Microwave Spectroscopy.

The pure rotational spectra of 4-methylthiazole···H2O and 5-methylthiazole···H2O were recorded by chirped-pulse Fourier transform microwave (CP-FTMW) spectroscopy. Each complex was generated within the rotationally cold environment of a gas sample undergoing supersonic expansion in the presence of an argon buffer gas. The spectra of five isotopologues of each complex have been measured and analyzed to determine the rotational constants, A0, B0, and C0; centrifugal distortion constants, DJ, DJK, and d1; nuclear quadrupole coupling constants, χaa(N3) and [χbb(N3) - χcc(N3)]; and parameters describing the internal rotation of the CH3 group, V3 and ∠(i,b). The experimentally deduced parameters were obtained using the XIAM and the BELGI-Cs-hyperfine code. For each complex, parameters in the molecular geometry are fitted to experimentally determined moments of inertia. DFT calculations have been performed at the ωB97X-D/aug-cc-pVQZ level in support of the experiments. Each complex contains two hydrogen bonds; a comparatively strong, primary interaction between the N of thiazole and an O-H of H2O, and a weaker, secondary interaction between O and either the hydrogen atom attached to C2 (in 5-methylthiazole···H2O) or the CH3 group attached to C4 (in 4-methylthiazole···H2O). The barrier to internal rotation of the CH3 group, V3, is slightly lower for 4-methylthiazole···H2O (XIAM result is 340.05(56) cm-1) than that for the 4-methylthiazole monomer (357.6 cm-1). This is likely to be a result of internal charge redistribution within the 4-methylthiazole subunit following its coordination by H2O. At the precision of the experiments, V3 of 5-methylthiazole···H2O (XIAM result is 325.16(38) cm-1) is not significantly different from V3 of the 5-methylthiazole monomer (332.0 cm-1).

Inductive Effects on Intramolecular Hydrogen Bond Strength: An Investigation of the Effect of an Electron-Withdrawing CF3 Group Adjacent to an Alcohol Hydrogen Bond Donor.

This combined experimental and theoretical study seeks to determine the role that inductive effects have on hydrogen bonds by an investigation into the change in intramolecular hydrogen bond strength in 2-amino-1-trifluoromethylethanol (2ATFME) relative to that in 2-aminoethanol (2AE). Toward this end, the rotational spectra of the normal, 13C, and 15N isotopologues have been measured using Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy and fit to the rotational, quadrupole coupling, and centrifugal distortion constants of the Watson A-reduction Hamiltonian. Structural parameters used to characterize the strength of the intramolecular hydrogen bond have been determined from the experimental structures of both 2ATFME and 2AE as well as from MP2/6-311++G(d,p) calculations. A comparison of these parameters in 2ATFME with those of 2AE indicates that the electron-withdrawing trifluoromethyl CF3 group strengthens the hydrogen bond. These include a 4% decrease in the distance between the donor and acceptor heavy atoms of the hydrogen bond, a 6% increase toward linearity of the OH···N angle, and a 23% decrease of the COH···N torsional angle toward planarity in 2ATFME relative to 2AE. This trend toward increased intramolecular hydrogen bond strength in 2ATFME is also observed within the ab initio structures.

The microwave spectra of the conformers of n-butyl nitrate

The microwave spectrum of n-butyl nitrate was recorded in the 5 to 20 GHz frequency range using broadband chirp and narrowband pulse excitation molecular jet Fourier transform microwave spectrometers. A quantum chemistry structural analysis yielded thirteen stable conformers. Among them, the five most energetically stable conformers were observed in the experimental spectra. The most stable conformer features a butyl chain with an anti-gauche-anti conformation (AGA) where the γ-carbon atom is about 64° out of the nitrate plane. For this conformer, spectra of all 13C and 15N minor isotopologues could be measured. The conformer with a straight butyl chain (AAA), and three other conformers (GAA, GGA, and AGG) were also observed. Accurate rotational constants, centrifugal distortion constants, and 14N nuclear quadrupole coupling constants could be deduced and compared to the theoretical values.

NMR Signatures and Electronic Structure of Ti Sites in Titanosilicalite-1 from Solid-State 47/49Ti NMR Spectroscopy.

Although titanosilicalite-1 (TS-1) is among the most successful oxidation catalysts used in industry, its active site structure is still debated. Recent efforts have mostly focused on understanding the role of defect sites and extraframework Ti. Here, we report the 47/49Ti signature of TS-1 and molecular analogues [Ti(OTBOS)4] and [Ti(OTBOS)3(OiPr)] using novel MAS CryoProbe to enhance the sensitivity. While the dehydrated TS-1 displays chemical shifts similar to those of molecular homologues, confirming the tetrahedral environment of Ti consistent with X-ray absorption spectroscopy, it is associated with a distribution of larger quadrupolar coupling constants, indicating an asymmetric environment. Detailed computational studies on cluster models highlights the high sensitivity of the NMR signatures (chemical shift and quadrupolar coupling constant) to small local structural changes. These calculations show that, while it will be difficult to distinguish mono- vs dinuclear sites, the sensitivity of the 47/49Ti NMR signature should enable distinguishing the Ti location among specific T site positions.

Many-body quantum muon effects and quadrupolar coupling in solids

Strong quantum zero-point motion (ZPM) of light nuclei and other particles is a crucial aspect of many state-of-the-art quantum materials. However, it has only recently begun to be explored from an ab initio perspective, through several competing approximations. Here we develop a unified description of muon and light nucleus ZPM and establish the regimes of anharmonicity and positional quantum entanglement where different approximation schemes apply. Via density functional theory and path-integral molecular dynamics simulations we demonstrate that in solid nitrogen, α–N2, muon ZPM is both strongly anharmonic and many-body in character, with the muon forming an extended electric-dipole polaron around a central, quantum-entangled [N2–μ–N2]+ complex. By combining this quantitative description of quantum muon ZPM with precision muon quadrupolar level-crossing resonance experiments, we independently determine the static 14N nuclear quadrupolar coupling constant of pristine α–N2 to be –5.36(2) MHz, a significant improvement in accuracy over the previously-accepted value of –5.39(5) MHz, and a validation of our unified description of light-particle ZPM.

On the Use of Solomon Echoes in 27 Al NMR Studies of Complex Aluminium Hydrides.

The quadrupole coupling constant CQ and the asymmetry parameter η have been determined for two complex aluminium hydrides from 27 Al NMR spectra recorded for stationary samples by using the Solomon echo sequence. The thus obtained data for KAlH4 (CQ =(1.30±0.02) MHz, η=(0.64±0.02)) and NaAlH4 (CQ =(3.11±0.02) MHz, η<0.01) agree very well with data previously determined from MAS NMR spectra. The accuracy with which these parameters can be determined from static spectra turned out to be at least as good as via the MAS approach. The experimentally determined parameters (δiso , CQ and η) are compared with those obtained from DFT-GIPAW (density functional theory - gauge-including projected augmented wave) calculations. Except for the quadrupole coupling constant for KAlH4 , which is overestimated in the GIPAW calculations by about 30 %, the agreement is excellent. Advantages of the application of the Solomon echo sequence for the measurement of less stable materials or for in situ studies are discussed.
