P1-P8, Diploid and Tetraploid Salpiglossis Germplasm1

Abstract A germplasm release representing 8 selections of Salpiglossis sinuata L. (velvet flower), all free of the cleistogamous character which inhibits corolla development, is being made by the Purdue University Agricultural Experiment Station. Five of the selections are diploid (2n = 44) and 3 are tetraploid (2n = 88).

Comparison of organic matter content with soil color for silt loam soils of Indiana

Abstract Using data from the Purdue University soil characterization laboratory and soil descriptions made by field soil scientists, we have developed a semi‐quantitative relationship between organic matter content and soil color for cultivated, silt loam soils of Indiana. This relationship is correct for about 90% of the samples examined and divides them in three categories: 5% organic matter. The Rust Fungi (Uredinales) on Compositae in Mexico

There are 123 species and 15 varieties in 10 genera recorded, together with their host plants, collectors and states where collected. Four new species are described: Puccinia archibaccharidis on Archibaccharis hieracioides in Mexico and Guerrero State, P. mcovaughii on Archibaccharis sescenicepts in Guerrero State, P. stomatifera on Perezia nudicaulis in Chiapas State, and P. duranii on Eupatorium greggii in Durango State. This is the third of recent papers (Cummins 1967, Hennen and Cummins 1967) that bring the records of the Mexican rust fungi up to date. The nomenclature follows Cummins and Stevenson (1956) or Parmelee (1967, 1969), Hennen and Cummins (1969), and Cummins, Britton, and Baxter (1969). Our study is based on some 700 specimens in the Arthur Herbarium (PUR), Purdue University. Several have been from phanerogamic herbaria (ARIZ, F, MICH, MO, MSU, NY, US, SMU). We appreciate the cooperation of the curators. Abbreviations of herbaria follows Lanjouw and Stafleu (1964). In the later 1890's, E. W. D. Holway collected extensively in the southern half of Mexico and, until recently, knowledge of the Uredinales of Mexico largely resulted from his collections. About 280 of the specimens listed here are his. Between 1961 and the present, we have collected, especially in the Northern half of Mexico. Some 200 of the specimens listed are ours. All specimens are listed by PUR accession number. Exsiccati are listed in parenthesis. The names of host tribes are in parenthesis following each host genus. Remote Sensing for Agricultural Purposes

The potential applications of remote sensing from aircraft in agriculture are many. Suggested uses include determination of crop acreages, surveys of land use, soil surveys, rangeland surveys, and determination of crop condition. The latter has been of special interest particularly with respect to crop damage from drought, salinity and plant pests. Quantitative measures of incidence and severity of plant diseases and other crop pests require high expenditures of time by trained personnel. Consequently, most estimates of crop losses from plant pests in major production regions of the United States and other countries are derived from inadequate surveys. In the late 1950's, U.S. industry members of the Agricultural Research Institute asked the Agricultural Board of the National Academy of SciencesNational Research Council to study methods by which the accuracy of such information could be improved. This request was guided by the reports of earlier work by R. N. Colwell (1956) on the detection of wheat stem rust disease in plots of graded infection severity by use of aerial infrared photography. In 1960, a committee of the NAS-NRC was appointed. In selecting committee members, the Academy took cognizance of the advances in technology that had been recently made in radiation detectors and optical mechanical scanners as well as photographic films. Members were selected from the disciplines of physics, engineering, agriculture, and forestry. From the outset, their studies dealt with not only the photographic spectral regions but also the ultra-violet, reflective infrared, emissive infrared, and radar regions. The committee was named Remote Sensing for Agricultural Purposes and was given permission to plan the research approach and to seek support for it. Because of the complexities of assembling equipment and obtaining agricultural test areas, the committee was later given permission to participate in the early feasibility studies. The first experiment was conducted in 1964 using University of Michigan aircraft and sensing equipment over Purdue University Agricultural Experiment Station farms (Holter et al., 1964). The major objective was to determine the capability of recognizing crop species by comparing energy returns from the different crops in 18 rather narrow spectral bands ranging from 0.35 to 16 /. The sensing instruments were a combination of optical mechanical scanners with appropriate filters and detectors and multiple and single lens camera systems. This combination of instruments was the best that could be put together at the time, but of course, there was no way to calibrate the energies measured in each channel. Data were recorded on film. Analyses were limited largely to comparing photographic tones of different fields with each other and with a selected standard area such as a road, pond, or grass strip common to each scene. Despite these and many other limitations, the power of such a multispectral system to differentiate crop species and soil types and to detect weedy and damaged areas within fields was indicated (Hoffer et al., 1966; Holmes & Hoffer, 1966). In 1965, the University of Michigan improved the airborne sensing system by mounting all equipment in a single plane, and devising a single-aperture, 12-channel scanner with internal calibration. The Uredinales on Mexican Gramineae

There are 91 species and varieties reported, including Physopella mexicana on Tripsacum lanceolatum in Durango, Puccinia chihuahuana on Muhlenbergia fragilis in Chihuahua, P. hilariae on Hilaria hintonii in Morelos, P. sierrensis on Muhlenbergia speciosa in Durango and Sinaloa, P. chisosensis Cummin. var. longa on Piptochaetium fimbriatum in Coahuila, P. vilfae Arth. & Holw. var. mexicana on Sporobolus buckleyi in Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas, and Uromyces epicampis Diet. & Holw. var. durangensis on Muhlenbergia glauca in Durango. The only complete recording of the rust fungi of Mexico has been that of Arthur (1907-1927). Zenteno (1958) recorded 16 species of grass rusts and listed their hosts, localities, and collectors. Mexican material of grass rust fungi were considered, but not always listed, by Cummins (1953), Hennen and Cummins (1956), Greene and Cummins (1958), Cummins and Greene (1961, 1966), Ramachar and Cummins (1963, 1965), Hennen (1965), and Cummins and Husain (1966) in their monographic studies of rust fungi of various tribes and genera of the grasses. When the North American Flora (Arthur, 1907-1927) was published, the grass rust fungi were based almost solely on the collections of E. W. D. Holway, Edward Palmer, C. G. Pringle, and A. S. Hitchcock. These men collected around 1900. Holway was the only one specifically interested in fungi. He made 95 collections of grass rusts, mostly in the southern half of Mexico. His collections comprised about half of the total available when the Flora was written. In the early years of the operations of the Rockefeller Foundation, J. S. Niederhauser collected several grass rust fungi. More recent collections are those recorded by Zenteno (1958) and made mostly by Mexican botanists. I have seen some of these collections, especially those of E. Hernindez X., J. Rodriguez V., and C. Tapia J. In 1961, 1962, and 1963, I collected 260 specimens of rusted grasses, visiting all of the states north of, and including, San Luis Potosi and Zacatecas. Distribution and Status of the Chiroptera of Indiana

The following species are recorded for the State: Myotis lucifugus, M. austroriparius, M. grisescens, M. keenii, M. sodalis, Lasionycteris noctivagans, Pipistrellus subflavus, Eptesicus fuscus, Lasiurus borealis, L. cinereus, Nycticeius humeralis, Plecotus rafinesquii. Of these, Myotis austroriparius, M. grisescens, and Plecotus rafinesquii are rare and occur locally. Data on known breeding colony locations are mapped by counties. A key to adult bats is included. Among native Indiana mammals, the least known are the Chiroptera. Bats are extremely difficult to study, and since they are of less economic importance than game animals our knowledge of bats has lagged far behind that of many other species. Early Indiana naturalists and mammalogists, with the exception of Walter L. Hahn, worked little with bats. Many old literature references are to specimens not preserved or to collected material no longer extant; many identifications (especially in the genus Myotis) cannot be verified. More recently, mammalogists have taken a renewed interest in these fascinating mammals. The availability of Japanese mist nets for collecting has greatly facilitated field work. Also, more research funds have become available since several insectivorous species of bats in the United States have been implicated in diseases harmful to man, such as rabies, histoplasmosis, and encephalitis. Our own interests date from the late 1940's, and when we obtained bat-banding permits in the fall of 1951, field work began in earnest. Cope worked under National Science Foundation Grant No. 9321 from 1958 to 1961. A five-year study of the mammals of Indiana, supported by the Agricultural Experiment Station, Purdue University, was begun by Mumford in 1958. Our studies are continuing, but have already revealed much new data concerning the 12 species of bats known from the State. This is the first attempt since Lyon (1936) to bring distribution and population data up to date. Common names used in this report are from Hall and Kelson (1959). We follow Handley (1959) with regard to the taxonomy of the big-eared bat. The synonymy for each species applies only to names used by authors in reference to Indiana. In the following species accounts, information under History refers to the literature prior to and including Lyon's Mammals of Indiana in 1936, after which a decided break in data existed until our own work began. Vincennes Fruit Insect Laboratory Dedicated

The federal fruit insect laboratory to serve the midwestern fruit industry was established at Vincennes, Indiana, in 1923, in cooperation with the Purdue University Agricultural Experiment Station, with Bennett A. Porter, now head of the U.S. Division of Fruit Insects, in charge.
