Text mining techniques for Exploring Customer Sentiments towards Packaged Organic Foods in India

Changing customer perception towards organic food is inspiring people to shift to organic counterparts of conventionally available packaged food products. They are willing to purchase the organically manufactured and packaged products in spite of a premium price tag. They thus possess some inherent expectations post purchase of organic food products. The purpose of this study is to explore customer levels of satisfaction and dissatisfaction on various attributes or features of packaged organic food products available in Indian market. For this purpose, 26,905 Online Customer Reviews of 100 unique packaged organic food products were collected and analysed using Word Clouds and Bar Graphs. Text mining techniques of Natural Language Processing (NLP) were applied to transform the unstructured textual review data into a structured form for identification of meaningful patterns and useful insights. Results confirmed that the customers were more dissatisfied than they were satisfied on product features of Price and Smell. On the other hand, Flavor, Delivery and Taste were the factors of highest customer satisfaction as compared to dissatisfaction shown towards each of these product features. Overall, Taste, Quality and Packaging saw maximum number of customer reviews as well as overall customer satisfaction post purchase of organic food products online. The study has implications for common shoppers of organic food products, manufacturers, marketers as well as retailers. The research provides a better understanding of consumer opinion after purchase and consumption of organic food products online.

Risk-indicative or sustainable consumption? Consumers’ risk perception on conventional and organic food products in Poland

The consumption of organic food is becoming increasingly popular and, to avoid numerous threats to human health and the natural environment, the issues devoted to it require greater attention from decision-makers, producers, and consumers. Consumer decisions have an impact on shaping food consumption patterns and recently the trend of the consumption of conventional versus organic food products has been widely discussed. This is especially true given the fact that the area of human health is strongly related to the consumption of food products produced under the challenges of environmental protection and sustainability. The study aimed to investigate if the perception of consumption among Polish respondents was risk-indicative or sustainable based on the animal, fruit, and vegetable products purchased from conventional or organic production. The results revealed that fruit and vegetable consumption was not identically related with socio-demographic features, but the income level equally affected consumer choices regarding the purchase of organic food products. Gender and marital status only influenced decisions regarding the purchase of organic fruit. The consumption of animal products regarding the frequency of their consumption did not reveal the features of sustainability. The metal accumulation index (MAI) for conventionally cultivated vegetables was not higher for all of the investigated vegetables, namely pumpkin, spring onion, cabbage, lettuce, spinach, and garlic. Our study contributes to addressing the knowledge gap on consumer choices about organic food products in Poland.

Quality and its Improvement in the Context of Agility in Polish Organic Food Processing

Abstract In a world of increasingly advanced technology and market turbulence caused by geopolitical turmoil and the spread of diseases of affluence, there is a growing need to adapt products and services to current market requirements in response to consumer expectations. The need to find its place in a constantly changing further and closer business environment has been also recognized in the agri-food sector. Consumers, looking for alternatives to industrially produced food and wanting to improve their well-being, have in mind, above all, not only the health quality of the food but also the absence of physical and chemical contaminants, and therefore, they are increasingly inclined to purchase organic food products. Under these circumstances, many Polish enterprises that choose this type of production are looking for solutions that allow them to respond quickly to changing consumer expectations. This paper first critically analyzes the scientific literature by compiling publications on aspects of enterprise agility to analyze issues related to quality assurance and its improvement as a manifestation of meeting customer expectations. This allowed for the identification of the research gap and formulation of the research objective, i.e. the assessment of the quality improvement activities as important problems of agility in Polish organic food processing. The main part of the empirical research was conducted in 2021-2022 using a questionnaire dedicated to entities involved in organic food production. The research was comprehensive in nature. The questionnaire was distributed to the entire population surveyed whereas the amount of the results leads to the conclusion that the sample is representative. Statistical analysis and inference were carried out using Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Shapiro-Wilk, ANOVA-Kruskal-Wallis, and U-Mann-Whitney tests.

Behavioural intention to purchase organic food: Bangladeshi consumers' perspective

PurposeThis research aims to assess the consumers' intention to purchase organic foods for balanced physical and mental growth. It examines the decision-making process in buying organic products built on the extended Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB). This study designed a model to show how Bangladeshi consumers wish to purchase organic food.Design/methodology/approachData were collected by means of a formal questionnaire from shoppers in different markets who buy organic and non-organic foods. Statistical analysis is done by applying partial least square-structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM).FindingsFindings refer that among the four antecedents called social norms (SN), personal attitude (ATT), perceived behaviour control (PBC) and health consciousness (HC), three (ATT, PBC and HC) have a significant influence on the intention to consume organic food in Bangladesh. The only cognitive variable called social norm (SN) has no statistically significant impact though it positively relates to the behavioural intention to purchase organic food.Research limitations/implicationsThe fitted model did not consider any moderating or mediating variable though there might be such effects regarding organic food purchase and consumption. The study includes a major portion of the respondents from less than Tk. 20,000 monthly income group, which is a price-sensitive group from Bangladesh perspective. Hence, this price sensitivity might have a slight influence on the results of the study.Practical implicationsThis study includes four variables as the predictors to describe consumers' intention to purchase organic food products in Bangladesh. Among the predictors, health consciousness or awareness is found to be most powerful. Though consciousness is the key, the awareness of Bangladeshi citizen regarding organic food is lower than in other parts of the world. Hence, the research model directs the policymakers to increase awareness through different social campaigns.Social implicationsUnder Vision 2040 of promoting sustainable development, the government of Bangladesh is trying to increase organic food consumption. Production and consumption of organic food will positively impact society since organic fertilizers are environmentally friendly and do not harm society. This research promotes a strategy formulation to ensure the consumption of organic foods for a positive social impact.Originality/valueThis study is a unique research to concentrate on the importance and factors influencing the consumption of organic foods in Bangladesh, a recently graduated developing country. Furthermore, it extended the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) and proposed a new conceptual framework.

Food Marketing: The influence of organic greenwash towards Malaysian consumers' trust: A conceptual paper

This research is focusing on the influence of greenwash on Malaysian consumers' trust towards organic food products. Malaysian consumers are becoming more aware and understand the importance of organic food products. Although Malaysia's organic market is still niche, many organic food products and organic retail/shops are available to purchase it. However, Malaysian consumers are concerned with the validity and credibility of organic food products, as many organic food products are from the local and importing country. Organic food products can relate to the greenwash that will impact consumers' trust towards organic food products. Therefore, the conceptual framework is developed by proposing four constructs - organic greenwashing, organic perceived risk, organic confusion and organic trust. The research will also focus on Malaysian consumers who have organic purchasing experience or intend to purchase organic food products. This conceptual paper will give insightful ideas for future research and give benefits to organic food retailing.

Determinants of organic food purchases intention: the application of an extended theory of planned behaviour:

This investigated the application of the extended theory of planned behavior (TPB) to determine Iranian students’ intention to purchase organic food products. The statistical population comprised all students in the field of agriculture sciences at Mohaghegh Ardabili University, Ardabil, Iran. Data were collected from 340 participants. The research instrument was a questionnaire developed through a comprehensive literature study. The content validity of the instrument was ascertained by a panel of university professors and its reliability by Cronbach’s alpha. Data were analyzed using SPSS v22 and LISREL8.80 software packages. The results of the structural equations model (SEM) showed that the variables of attitude, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, moral norms, health consciousness, and environmental concern could account for 86 percent of the variance of students’ intention to purchase organic products. In addition, results revealed that environmental concern and health consciousness highly influenced (41 percent) attitude towards organic food products. Based on the results recommendations are made.

Buying Organic Food Products: The Role of Trust in the Theory of Planned Behavior.

When someone decides to buy organic food products trust plays a role. Consumers, in fact, are neither supposed to have the appropriate knowledge to evaluate the characteristics of these products, nor can they control that the food was actually manufactured following the procedures prescribed by organic production. Therefore, trust may contribute to the explanation of both purchasing intention and behavior since it represents a heuristic or shortcut that people adopt in order to reduce the large amount of information that consumers need to take into account. The present research aimed to analyze the role of trust in organic products on buying behavior adopting the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) as theoretical framework. A relational model was tested in which this variable was supposed to act as a background factor associated with all the classical constructs foreseen by the theory and the buying behavior. Also, indirect effects of trust on both intention and behavior were assessed. Two studies were conducted targeting the purchase of organic food products in general (Study 1) and of fresh organic fruit and vegetables (Study 2). In both studies, the data collection was organized in two waves, with a time lag of 1 month. At Time 1, the questionnaires included measures of intention, its antecedents and trust, while at Time 2 self-reported buying behavior was collected. Data were supplied by two convenience samples of Italian adults (237 and 227 participants) and analyzed via structural equation modeling. Results turned out to be overlapping in both studies, since trust was positively associated with attitude and subjective norm, and it was indirectly associated with intention and behavior, thanks to the mediation of the TPB constructs. The outcomes highlighted the importance of people’s trust in organic products as a meaningful antecedent that boosts the TPB-based psychosocial processes that are supposed to stand behind both purchasing intentions and behaviors.

UNDERSTANDING INDONESIAN CONSUMER’S INTENTION TO PURCHASE ORGANIC FOOD PRODUCTS: THE MODERATING ROLE OF PRICE SENSITIVITY

As climate change is one of the major challenges of our time, green products that benefit sustainable production, such as organic agriculture is not only a trend but a necessity. The purpose of this study was to investigate consumer’s value perceptions and their intentions to purchase organic food products. In addition, the study examined the moderating role of price sensitivity between perceived value and purchase intention. Survey data from 203 people in the Jabotabek were used to test our hypotheses, We found that only one value (emotional) had a significantly positive effect on organic food product purchase intention. The moderating effect of purchase experience was found only on the path between emotional value and organic food product purchase intention. The findings offer implications for academics, practitioners, and marketers in determining strategies that encourage people to purchase organic food products. We conclude that marketers should design strategies that maximize the emotional value of organic food products.

The Analysis of Marketing Factors Influencing Consumers' Preferences and Acceptance of Organic Food Products-Recommendations for the Optimization of the Offer in a Developing Market.

Considering the benefits of the organic production system, it is recognized as one of the main drivers of future economic development. However, the imbalance between demand and supply at the local market level represents one of the serious obstacles that prevents its future growth. Therefore, this article examines the key factors related to the main elements of the offer that have the strongest impact on consumer preferences and acceptance of organic food products. In that sense, organic product, price, distribution channel, and promotion are considered the main elements of the offer and are analyzed in this paper from the consumer preferences perspective. Further, this article provides insight into some of the sensory properties of the offer that are important to consumers. Finally, it gives recommendations for optimization of the offer on the organic food market based on the analysis of the influence of each of those elements (product, price, distribution, and promotion) on consumer acceptance of organic products and making purchasing decisions. The data were collected using a questionnaire, and analyzed using the structural equation model (SEM). The results revealed that price and promotion have the strongest impact on consumer acceptance and buying decisions. Further analysis revealed that attitudes towards organic food products, price/quality ratio, distribution barriers, and modern media as a promotion instrument are the factors that have the most significant impact on consumer perception and attitudes towards the available market offer. These findings can help producers and other decision makers to better understand what creates added value of the organic food products in consumers’ mind and therefore make an offer that is in line with their expectations and preferences, which is recognized as one of the main prerequisites for the acceptance and purchase of organic food products.

The positive role of labelling on consumers’ perceived behavioural control and intention to purchase organic food

The consumption of organic food has increased dramatically in recent years in response to consumers’ concerns with issues related to health, well-being and the environment. However, further increases are restricted by a number of barriers, one of the most important of which is information. Using the Reasoned Action Approach (RAA), this study is the first to examine the role of product specific information (labelling) to understand the gap between consumer attitude and behavioural intention to purchase organic food products. Based on responses from 1,052 New Zealand consumers, analysis using structural equation modelling demonstrates that labelling plays an important role within the perceived behavioural control dimension of the RAA, as well as directly on attitudes, in influencing behavioural intention. The more that respondents agree that labelling is actionable, the more positive their attitude and sense of control, and hence intention and (self-reported) behaviour. These findings suggest that by improving labelling systems to include more actionable information, such as the health, environmental and societal benefits of products, consumers perceived behavioural control can be increased to strengthen intentions to purchase organic products.

A Research on Buying Behaviour on Organic Foods with Special Reference to Erode District

‘Organic’ is the term which is used frequently nowa-days by the consumers all over the world. The problem of the study is people are already living in the place which is polluted in all means – air, water and land and in-addition to that the food which they take in is also polluted with fertilizer, pesticides, etc., This practice is been followed knowingly or unknowingly for so many decades. Organic food products are becoming popular in many cities in India. The study has identified in Erode as one of the area where people are started to buy organic food product. The organic market in India is identified as one of the fast growing sector. The objective of the study is to examine the awareness on purchase of organic food products, to analyze the motivational factors towards purchase of organic food, to analyze the purchase pattern towards organic food and to know the satisfaction level of consumers and problems faced by them. There are five research tools has been used for the study, those are Simple percentage analysis, chi-square, ANOVA, Friedman Rank test, Descriptive Statistics. The marketers of organic food products need to be innovative and dynamic in order to complete with the changing purchase behaviour in the organic food products market among urban residents.The study brought out the fact that the people are well aware of images and availability, but not loyal entirely to organic food products .So the marketers must create promotions which are both realistic and moral.

Antecedents of Organic Food Consumption among the Indian Customers

Organic food products refers to food raised, grown and stored and/or processed without the use of synthetically produced chemicals or fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, fungicides, growth hormones and regulators or generic modification. Generally people are aware about the benefits of these products. But still the products have not achieved the market share in India, as expected. This people is an effort to identify the factors, which influences the purchase of organic food products. For this the researchers have developed a questionnaire and administered on the respondents. Both online and off line data collection was done, to cover the major areas, so that data can be collected from distinct places. The paper explored the awareness level about organic food products, influence of demographic variables on organic food consumption and factors affecting organic food purchase intention.

Consumer Attitude towards Organic Foods: A Multigroup Analysis across Genders

Environmental pollution, modern farming practices and animal transmitted diseases have led consumers to have food safety and health concerns regarding organic foods. This research aims to examine the relationship between consumers’ health consciousness, food safety concerns, attitudes towards organic products, and intention to purchase organic food products. For this purpose, we first developed a research model; then, we tested the research model based on gender differences. According to the results of the research, the attitude toward organic food is a powerful indicator of the consumer’s intention to purchase organic food. Health consciousness, food safety concerns, attitudes, and intentions have a significant relationship with each other. As a result of the gender based binary model comparison, the attitudes and intentions of male and female consumers towards organic food are different. Participants’ increased awareness of health consciousness and food safety concerns increase the relevance of organic products, and has an impact on the development of the organic product market. 

Application of consumer style inventory (CSI) to predict young Indian consumer’s intention to purchase organic food products

The present study attempts to investigate the consumer decision making styles (CDMS) in the organic food category. Sproles and Kendall’s Consumer Styles Inventory (CSI) instrument (1986) was modified and applied in the organic food-product context. Further, two additional constructs identified from the literature were included, namely; environmental consciousness and health consciousness. Responses were collected from 527 young consumers using convenience sampling approach and analyzed with the help of Exploratory Factor Analysis and Structural Equation Modelling. Out of eight CDMS, five styles, namely perfectionism (high quality consciousness); brand consciousness; recreational (hedonistic shopping consciousness); price consciousness and brand loyalty reported significant influences on consumers’ organic food purchase intention. Further, both the additional constructs (environmental consciousness and health consciousness) were also found significant. The finding of the study will help the organic food marketers in identifying the factors important for organic food purchases.

A study on awareness of organic food products in Trichy district

Background: The high growth of population and life expectancies during the recent years increased demand for food supplies in India. To meet this, the green revolution became the corner stone of agricultural achievement. Overexploitation of natural and non-renewable resources has impaired ecological balance and has put the health of the consumers in jeopardy. Therefore it is inevitable to resort to organic food products. The aim of the study was to assess the awareness of organic food products among the consumers in Trichy district, Tamil Nadu.Methods: A cross sectional questionnaire based study was conducted among rural, semi-urban, urban residents (100 each, total of 300) in august 2016. Results: Out of 300 respondents, 76%, 73%, 62% of the respondents have heard known about, and purchase organic food products respectively. The main source of organic foods was from specific shops and kitchen gardens and the most preferred factor while purchasing food items is the credibility. Though 62% of consumers purchase organic food, they mainly prefer vegetable and fruits and 38% of the respondents consume organic food regularly. The reason for not consuming organic foods in our residents is the non-availability. Conclusions: Awareness of organic food products among study population is about 76% with the greater awareness level among urban population. The main reasons for consuming organic food being credibility & availability. Increasing the awareness level of organic products, encouraging people to create their own organic garden can increase consumption of organic foods.

What Motivates Consumers to Purchase Organic Food in Malaysia?

The aim of this study is to investigate the consumer motivational factors that influence their attitude to purchase of organic food in Malaysia. Consumer motivational factors involved past experience, health consciousness and personal values were examined in this study. Data from 421 organic food consumers were obtained through a survey conducted in Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya or better known as Klang Valley, Malaysia. The structural equation modelling was used for data analysis and four hypotheses were tested. The findings showed that all four hypotheses were accepted. Health consciousness had the greatest positive influence on consumer attitude of organic food, followed by past experience and personal values. Purchase of organic food products was significantly affected by consumer attitude of the products. The contribution of this paper is twofold. First and from a theoretical perspective, it offers both development and validation of Theory of Planned Behaviour and Hierarchy of Effect model. Second and from a pragmatic perspective, the findings proposed useful information to organic food providers in developing and implementation of effective strategies to enhance consumption of organic food.

Perception of Organic Food Consumption in Romania.

This study provides insight into the attitude of Romanian consumers towards organic food. Furthermore, it examines the sustainable food production system in Romania from the perspective of consumer behavior. This study used a mathematical model of linear regression with the main purpose being to determine the best prediction for the dependent variable when given a number of new values for the independent variable. This empirical research is based on a survey with a sample of 672 consumers, which uses a questionnaire to analyze their intentions towards sustainable food products. The results indicate that a more positive attitude of consumers towards organic food products will further strengthen their purchasing intentions, while the status of the consumption of organic consumers will not affect their willingness to purchase organic food products. Statistics have shown that sustainable food consumption is beneficial for health, so it can also become a profitable business in Romania. Furthermore, food sustainability in Romania depends on the ability of an organic food business to adapt to the new requirements of green consumption.

Consumer's Attitude towards Organic Food Products buying Decision in Vellore City: Structural Equation Modeling-Using Partial Least Square (SEM-PLS) approach

The main purpose of this paper is to examine consumer's attitude towards buying decision of organic food products in Vellore city. Questionnaires were used to collect data from 200 consumers at organic food stores in Vellore city from May 2017 to June 2017. The proposed model in PLS-SEM explained consumers’ purchase decision towards organic food products. The study results confirmed that the proposed model examined that combined past consumer behavioral theories to ascertain the factors that commence in the purchase of organic food products. The findings of this present study have research implications to both academicians and marketing executives. Thus, it discloses the attitude towards purchase of organic food products and to accept organic products by consumers in future.

Consumer perceptions and attitudes of organic food products in Eastern China

Purpose – In response to food scares related to high levels of agro-chemical residues sometimes found on foods, consumers in China increasingly demand for organic foods. As little is known on consumer perceptions and attitudes toward organic food products, the purpose of this paper is to gain insight into the purchase of organic food products by consumers and to explore the main factors driving this process. Design/methodology/approach – Mixed (quantitative and qualitative) market survey approaches were used to provide a potentially deeper insight into consumer’s perspective and could help get a better picture of the complex factors involved. Findings – The main trigger for purchasing organic food products is that consumers expect them to be healthier and safer. The respondents who have bought organic food products tend to have a higher education level and disposable incomes, be families with children and be older than those who have not bought them. The main barriers to increasing the market share of organic food products are the consumers’ lack of knowledge, the relatively high price premium and the lack of availability of organic food products. Informing consumers about unique characteristics of organic production methods, the decline in the prices of and increasing the availability of organic food products to its customers might be a promising strategy to develop the market for organic food products. Originality/value – This paper provides a unique insight into buying behavior and attitudes of organic consumers in China. The results of the research could provide information for the organic food industry to expand its market and improve its profitability and reliability.
