Guest Editorial Special Issue on Pulsed Power Science and Technology

This special issue of the IEEE TRansactions on Plasma Science (TPS) mainly contains works presented at the 23rd IEEE Pulsed Power Conference (PPC) held between December 12–16, 2021 ( <uri xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">https://uta.engineering/ppcsofe2021</uri> ). The conference was jointly held with the 29th IEEE Symposium on Fusion Engineering (SOFE). Each respective conference has a long history of serving their community as gathering forums for the presentation and discussion of their field’s research topics.

Guest Editorial Special Issue on Plenary, Invited, and Selected Minicourse Tutorial Papers From PPPS 2019

The combined IEEE International Conference on Plasma Science (ICOPS) (held annually) and Pulsed Power Conference (held biennially) are merged once every six years, sponsored by the Plasma Science and Applications Committee (PSAC) and the Pulsed Power Science and Technology Committee (PPS&T) of the IEEE Nuclear and Plasma Science Society (NPSS). The joint conference, called the Pulsed Power and Plasma Science Conference, was held on June 23–28, 2019, in Orlando, FL, USA. The conference’s technical program included a wide range of topics, which ranged from fundamental research to traditional and emerging technology applications. The conference had over 800 accepted abstracts, representing scientists from over 30 countries. The program also included a minicourse on “Computational Methods in Plasma Physics.” This year the PPPS sessions were enhanced by a number of exceptional plenary talks.

A Review of Diverse Academic Research in Nanosecond Pulsed Power and Plasma Science

This article was invited in order to summarize for the special edition of a Plenary Review presentation at the IEEE ICOPS/PPC meeting, June 23 2019 by M. Gundersen. It is a review of research conducted into primarily academic environments in nanosecond pulsed power, applications of the pulsed power research to bioelectrics, and combustion and ignition over a period of $\approx 45$ years. Research was conducted primarily at the University of Southern California (USC), at Texas Tech University (TTU), and through collaborations with other laboratories and personnel. Pulsed power, applied on a nanosecond time scale, was found to enable a range of new applications; several examples are detailed below. The range of applications for research based in short-pulse, or nanosecond pulsed power, and applied plasma science, strongly encourage defining and supporting the extension of programmatic research goals to beyond the academic laboratories and into the commercial environment.

Review of Chinese pulsed power science and technology

This paper begins with the concept of pulsed power science and technology, briefly introduces the Chinese history of pulsed power science and technology, which, according to the construction process of high power pulse accelerator, can be divided into three stages: self-dependent startup, accelerated growth, innovation and invention; principally describes the national progress and applications of pulsed power science and technology with an international perspective, such as X-ray flash photography, Z-pinch, high-power microwave, electromagnetic emission and industrial applications; presents the development trend of pulse power technology in the future and ends with suggestions for its domestic development as follows: vigorously developing advanced radiation source technology, putting more concerns on explosive magnetic compression technology, strengthening explorations into high power microwaves, nuclear hardening and electromagnetic emission for more breakthroughs, and increasing collaborative innovations and application promotions.

Guest Editorial Special Issue on Pulsed Power Science and Technology

This special issue of the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON PLASMA SCIENCE (TPS) mainly contains works presented at the 21st IEEE International Pulsed Power Conference (PPC) held in Brighton, U.K., between June 18–22, 2017 ( http://ece-events.unm.edu/ppc2017/ ). This conference marks an important step, as it was located outside of the USA for the first time. The PPC is well known for serving the Pulsed Power and Plasma Science communities as the principal forum for the professionals worldwide, where the most important technical presentations and discussions are taking place; the Brighton conference was no exception. The 21st PPC was extremely successful, with 470 quality papers submitted as equal contributions from the Americas, Europe, and Asia.

A Basic Study on Shock Resistant Design for Explosion Pit

The mechanism of damage on the structure of an explosion pit which belongs to the Institute of Pulsed Power Science, Kumamoto University is investigated. Investigated is the mechanism of damage on the structure of an explosion pit which belongs to the Institute of Pulsed Power Science, Kumamoto University. Here, three-dimensional model with square opening (door) is used to simulate by numerical simulation. The numerical result with the actual egg-type model implies that firstly the cracks occurred at the corners of the door and grew larger. In addition, the numerically simulated results with a spherical form model are also demonstrated to study on optimizing the design of an explosion pit.
