Epidemiological profile of pediatric patients with acute kidney injury: A literature review

Objective: To identify the epidemiological profile of hospitalized pediatric patients who progressed to Acute Kidney Injury. Method: A bibliographic survey was carried out through publications in indexed journals (MEDLINE, LILACS, SciELO, and PubMed), from 2007 to 2022, focusing on the topic in question. Results: In practically all studies, about 30% to 40% of AKI cases were due to sepsis and infection. Pediatric patients with sepsis and systemic multiorgan dysfunction had lower survival rates than those associated with other cases. Septic shock was associated with death in 62% of patients with AKI and was a risk factor for mortality. Conclusion: AKI is a severe disease, with a multifactorial etiology in many cases, and with variable mortality, which can reach more than 60% in dialysis patients. From an epidemiological point of view, there is still a significant lack of robust studies on the incidence, prevalence, and outcomes of AKI in the pediatric population.

“Research paper mills”: A factory outlet for dubious research

The primary objective of any research, regardless of its domain such as health, technology, psychology, or any other subject, is to enhance the overall well-being of individuals. Rigorous processes are involved in conducting research ethically and in communicating its outcomes to society. However, as publishing research has become a mandatory requirement for career advancement and appointments, academics are resorting to several unethical practices to get substandard work published quickly. Consequently, predatory publishing markets have emerged, which publish data that is falsified and fabricated, along with plagiarised textual matter. The emergence of “paper mills” is a further step in the corruption of research, where a group of persons or automated systems generate papers for publication. Anyone desirous of publishing a paper can purchase one, akin to any desired fast-moving consumer product, with the added guarantee of publication in indexed journals. Therefore, paper mills and their unethical modus operandi are discussed in this paper in detail, with relevant examples. The article unfolds the consequences of publishing such fraudulent research papers and concludes with the challenges in combating paper mills.

Exploring the neurosurgery training landscape in Pakistan: A trainee's perspective in resource-limited settings

BackgroundShortage of neurosurgeons in Pakistan, one per 720,000 people, stems from a lack of trainees. Therefore, it is vital to assess the training experience, career opportunities, and satisfaction levels of neurosurgical trainees in Pakistan. MethodsA nationwide survey was conducted, covering 22 CPSP-accredited neurosurgery training programs in Pakistan. Convenience sampling was utilized with a pilot tested questionnaire and responses were analyzed using STATA 15. ResultsThe response rate was 98% (120/122) with 70.8% male and mean age of 30.4 ± 4.1 years. Training programs included teaching courses (79%) and journal club (66%); however, there was a lack of cadaver workshops (14%) and cranial model-based stimulation (22%). 67% of trainees lacked publications in indexed journals. 69% worked 50–100 h weekly, with 62% experiencing burnout due to workload and hours and a third reporting poor work-life balance. Trainees dedicated more to operating rooms (37%, 10–24 h/week) and clinics (34%, 24–48 h/week) compared to study (42%, <5 h/week) and research (64%, <5 h/week). Gender equality was rated poorly by 50%. Disparities emerged in subspecialty exposure, with over half of trainees lacking exposure to deep brain stimulation (67%), and epilepsy (75%). 52.5% of the training institutes did not offer fellowships and 64.1% of trainees planned to pursue fellowships abroad. ConclusionsSteps need to be taken to improve working hours, gender equity, and increase simulation courses, diversify subspecialty exposure, and promote research initiatives.

The association between state regulation and the increase in research productivity in Peruvian universities

In the eight years following the 2014 university system reform in Peru, there has been sustained growth in the scientific production of the Peruvian universities, evident by an increased number of publications in indexed journals compared to the pre-reform period. Using administrative data, the article investigates if the growth of scientific production is associated with the research-strengthening conditions of the Peruvian licensing model. Despite the low institutional research legacy in the university system, there is a strong association of the regulation linked to the university reform process in the production of academic articles. This result is robust to different specifications. Equally important is showing that this change has allowed universities with a limited research legacy to enhance their research output, which could be attributed to their increased necessity to adapt to a research-oriented approach already established by other universities.

A comparative study to monitor drug adherence to antihypertensive drugs among preeclamptic women and to determine factors contributing to drug compliance restrictions.

Background Preeclampsia, a perilous pregnancy complication, affects 4–5% of pregnancies worldwide, contributing to a significant proportion of maternal deaths, particularly due to pregnancy-related hypertension diseases. Adherence to antihypertensive medication is crucial for improving maternal and fetal health outcomes. However, evidence suggests that pregnant women often fail to comply with prescribed regimens, with reasons ranging from ignorance to amnesia. Methods This study proposes a cross-sectional, questionnaire-based approach to assess drug adherence among pregnant patients with preeclampsia in rural areas. The study aims to evaluate awareness levels and barriers to adherence. The study will be conducted in a tertiary care teaching hospital and will involve 114 eligible patients. Sociodemographic data, diagnosis, medication details, awareness about antihypertensive use, and medication adherence will be collected through semi-structured interviews and questionnaires. The 8-Item Morisky’s Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-8) will be employed to assess adherence levels. Data analysis will involve descriptive statistics, Chi-square tests, and logistic regression. Expected results The study anticipates revealing insights into the level of drug adherence and awareness among pregnant women with preeclampsia. By identifying barriers to adherence, the study aims to tailor interventions to enhance compliance, reduce costs, and optimize drug therapy. The dissemination of results through publication in indexed journals and presentation at scientific conferences will contribute to the understanding of medication adherence in pregnancy-related disorders.

New Challenges for Radiology Professionals during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Aims: Analyze the new challenges faced by radiology professionals in managing suspected or confirmed COVID-19 patients and understand their implications for the safety strategies of these professionals and patients.&#x0D; Methodology: The method used was an integrative literature review, conducted by searching for publications in indexed journals in the databases PubMed, SciELO, Scopus, and ScienceDirect, covering the years from 2015 to 2020.&#x0D; Results: In the data analysis, the articles were classified into 20 units of analysis, with information presented as sub-themes related to the publications of the selected studies, with a focus on the synthesis of the results.&#x0D; Conclusion: In conclusion, it is essential that not only all professionals involved in the process possess knowledge and preventive measures, but also that the entire radiology service is adequately prepared to receive patients, thereby ensuring greater stability in terms of environmental biosafety.

Islamic Social Reporting and Financial Performance: A Bibliometric Analysis

Examining the topic of Islamic Social Reporting and Financial Performance from previous research can provide opportunities for further research that is more diverse and innovative. So, to support this research, then mapping is done by analyzing previous research with identifying and analyzing similar research that is relevant in the field of sharia accounting, which discusses the topic of Islamic Social Reporting and Financial Performance. The aim of this research is to map research that is related to the field of sharia accounting. for publication in indexed journals. Scopus, Sinta 1, Sinta 2, Sinta 3, Sinta 4, Sinta 5, Sinta 6, Garuda, and DOAJ. This research uses a type of desk research, using bibliometric analysis methods. It was found that research on Islamic social reporting and financial performance had appeared since 2012. There are 35 articles that discuss topics related to Islamic Social Reporting and Financial Performance, these 35 articles are then explained in this study. 2019 was the peak of the number of published articles related to the topic of Islamic social reporting and financial performance with the highest number of 8 articles. Based on the results of the mapping and analysis of this research, it is concluded that Islamic social reporting and financial performance research has begun to be widely studied from year to year and can be developed into topics related to sharia banking, Islamic banking, profit sharing ratios, Islamic corporate governance, and sharia compliance.

Rethinking for Natural Pharmaceutical Technology: Parabens as Cosmetic Preservatives and their Potential as Chemical Endocrine Disruptors

Background: The movement of conscious consumption is growing rapidly. The idea of leaving behind synthetic products and substances that generate waste from their production to their final disposal grows and widens the gap between the old capitalist paradigm and the concept of naturism. It includes environmental awareness, taking care of our body, and the conscious choice of what we eat, wear, and use in daily life, including cosmetic products. Objective:: This study aimed to explore a new paradigm of formulation and consumption. A group of parabens was selected, and their replacement with preservatives approved for natural cosmetics was proposed. Some of the risks associated with the consumption of parabens in food, cosmetics, and medicines, were also examined. Moreover, the advantages and disadvantages of preservatives for the product and consumer were also discussed. Methods:: For data collection, publications in indexed journals were searched, with the keywords: parabens, endocrine disrupting chemicals, and skin conditions related to the use of parabens. Results:: Recent studies have reported that by using parabens in skin products, we create an imbalance in the skin flora. This preservative decreases the defense capacity of our first immune line and causes disorders that lead to irritation, rosacea spots, oiliness, and sectorized peeling. Furthermore, parabens are exogenous substances that alter the functions of the endocrine system and can cause adverse health effects. Conclusion:: In Argentina, compounds from the paraben family are used by many brands as preservatives, which are dangerous to health and the environment. Therefore, a conscious, sustainable, biodegradable, and cruelty-free alternative is needed to replace parabens in cosmetics

Paleopalynology in Colombia: a review

Palynology is an important tool for establishing age and interpreting paleoenvironments in both continental and marine deposits. This paper provides a summarized overview of the palynological information published for deposits in Colombia ranging from the Paleozoic to the Miocene-Pliocene. We found 111 publications in indexed journals contain palynological data from 511 sections or wells. Palynology of the Paleozoic in Colombia has been mainly studied in the Eastern Llanos; the Triassic-Jurassic is virtually unknown; there are studies on the Cretaceous in the Eastern Cordillera, the Upper Magdalena Valley, and Catatumbo; the Paleogene has been studied in sedimentary rocks of the Llanos foothills, the Eastern Cordillera, the Middle Magdalena Valley, Catatumbo, and in some isolated spots in La Guajira and the Caribbean while the Neogene has been studied in the Amazon, the Eastern Cordillera, and the Llanos foothills. Recent publications for the Caribbean and Pacific regions and a palynological zonation for the Llanos and its basins have been successfully used in other basins in the country. In recent years, the interest of the Colombian government in exploring new areas for hydrocarbon exploration in the Caribbean facilitated a partnership between the National Hydrocarbons Agency and the University of Caldas to conduct palynological studies in deposits ranging from the Late Cretaceous to the Quaternary. Here we present a summary of the main advances in Caribbean palynology.

Sentiment Analysis of Multilingual Tweets on Cash Waqf

The practice of waqf is usually focused on a building or piece of land. Many donors end up not being able to afford the assets to participate in the Waqf. Cash waqf allows people of all backgrounds to engage in long-term charitable work. This study aims to analyze the sentiment generated from the social media ‘Twitter’ application regarding cash waqf. The technique employed is sentiment analysis of secondary data consisting of 330 tweets. The results showed that positive sentiment was the highest result with a percentage of 53%, followed by neutral sentiment at 32.1%, and negative sentiment at 14.8%. The good (positive) sentiment is the opinion of Twitter users who tweet about cash waqf topics by being positive and tend to be optimistic in responding to the existence of cash waqf and supporting the development of cash waqf. While the negative sentiment is the opinion of Twitter users who tend to express criticism in reviewing developments related to cash waqf. According to the findings, the majority of individuals are more pleased about the existence of cash waqf. As a result, increasing the number of scientific literature publications in indexed journals of cash waqf is necessary to maintain this favorable view.

Relative efficiencies of the state universities in Sri Lanka: can they enroll more students?

PurposeThis study aimed to evaluate the relative efficiencies of the state universities in Sri Lanka from 2017 to 2019 and their capacity to enroll more students.Design/methodology/approachData envelopment analysis (DEA) method was used to measure the relative efficiencies. Annual data on expenditure, academic staff, non-academic staff, student enrollments, graduate output and publications in indexed journals were used.FindingsResults from both input oriented DEA and output oriented DEA showed that seven out of 15 (47%) state universities were constantly performing efficiently from 2017 to 2019. Well-established universities are apparently more efficient than emerging universities. Six universities were constantly inefficient. Excess staff and the deficiencies in enrollments, graduate output and publications were the main causes of the inefficiencies. In particular, the total enrollments can be increased by 23%.Research limitations/implicationsThe outcomes are thoroughly based on DEA with a selected set of variables and data. Owing to the limitations in the DEA method, variables and data, the results may not reflect the actual efficiencies of the universities. However, this study indicates that the universities can improve their relative efficiencies by accommodating more students and increasing research output.Originality/valueThis study is the first proper investigation of the relative efficiencies of the state universities in Sri Lanka using DEA. This is also the first quantitative assessment of the capacity of Sri Lankan Universities to increase student enrollments.

The relevance of thermochemical energy storage in the last two decades: The analysis of research evolution

The research field on thermochemical energy storage (TCS) has shown consistent growth over the last decade. This study analysed over 1196 scientific publications in indexed journals and books from the last decades. What can we learn from analysing the evolution of research? There is no other study that has used bibliometrics to perform a detailed analysis of the TCS field, which has only been assessed from the perspective of the whole thermal energy storage field to date. The trends obtained in this study provide an important perspective of the field, indicating the strengths and weaknesses of the thermochemical materials and systems applied to energy storage. The main publication trend shows an exceptional increase in TCS research and in both defined research sub-areas (sorption and chemical reaction heat storage). The sub-category chemical reaction heat storage has fewer publications compared to sorption heat storage, indicating that it is a less explored field. In general, the evolution of the keywords in publications reflects technology maturity since the most recent terms are associated more with final use applications. Remarkably, there has been a change from a total dependence on funding for scientific output to a scenario in which a significant number of publications mention no specific funding, but this trend has changed in recent years.

Erudite Women’s Outstanding Contribution to the Indian Medical Education: A Recognition on International Women’s Day 2021

Women education is the first and the most important step towards attaining women empowerment. Writing and publishing textbooks for medical education is a challenging work, especially by women. This article intends to compile personal information and books published by women in different specialities so as to give recognition to such women on this International Women’s Day. Forty women were shortlisted who have either written or edited textbooks, out of which gynaecology and anatomy were the dominant specialities where contribution of the women was seen maximum. Along with textbooks, these women have many publications in indexed journals and are the recipient of famous awards in their fields. Contributions of these empowered women should be documented more often in literature so that more and more younger women get to know them.

Identification Of Parasitic Infections In Food Handlers And The Imminent Risks Of Transmission To School-Aged Children

Introduction: Most diseases transmitted by food contaminated by protozoa and/or helminths are originated from food improper handling. This fact is related to poor hygiene conditions in the food handling environment or the practices of food handlers. Objective: The aim of this study was to identify parasitic diseases in food handlers, as well as the risk of transmission to school-aged children. Methods: This is a literature review accomplished through researchers in Pubmed, Academic OneFile, SciELO and Google Scholar. The review comprised 40 articles published in the period from 2009 to 2019. In order effect the review, were included in this study literature reviews and original articles, identified in the aforementioned databases and which met the inclusion criteria: having their publication in indexed journals, articles with abstracts and full texts available online, articles published in Portuguese, English or Spanish in the last ten years. Studies whose year of publication was less than 2009 were excluded. Results: Enteroparasitosis are a serious public health problem that affects the world population. This fact is mainly related to the ingestion of contaminated food, having a direct connection with those who handle it. Conclusion: Therefore, food handlers have an important role in the transmissibility of diseases and food security.

Recomendaciones en los laboratorios de sueño y para el uso de dispositivos de presión positiva durante la pandemia por COVID-19

La enfermedad por coronavirus 2019 o COVID-19 se transmite principalmente a través de gotas respiratorias, contacto cercano no protegido, y procedimientos generadores de aerosoles (3). Las pruebas realizadas en un laboratorio de sueño y la terapia con presión positiva como el CPAP o BPAP, pueden aumentar el riesgo de exposición de transmisión de COVID 19 al personal médico y pacientes. Las decisiones basadas en la evidencia son el estándar ideal, sin embargo, esta evidencia va apareciendo poco a poco, a un ritmo mas lento que la emergencia de salud publica que estamos viviendo; por tanto, por el momento debemos basar nuestras decisiones en la experiencia, en documentos de consenso, cuando esten disponibles, y el juicio clinico cuando no exista evidencia. Nuestro objetivo es dar unas recomendaciones, teniendo como marco de referencia las dictadas por organismos nacionales e internacionales, como la Academia Americana de Medicina del Sueño, la Academia Mexicana de Medicina del dormir, y otras publicaciones en revistas indexadas. Self‐sustaining Laboratories and Collaborative Mentoring in Anatomy Research

The development of new technologies and tools for teaching anatomy and the high cost of anatomy laboratories have forced a tendency to decrease the use of bodies and practice. However, these are essential for teaching gross anatomy, and their value is indisputable; students can understand anatomy and develop surgical and clinical skills. Our laboratory has been structured in a manner it can cover all student activities, but also be self‐sustaining through the implementation of postgraduate courses, host for clinical practices for specialists, and pharmaceutical sponsored courses. The incomes are then re‐invested in furthering the laboratory equipment (ultrasound, fluoroscopy, arthroscopy, microsurgery, minimally invasive surgery), to offer a wider range of courses for physicians to expand their knowledge and clinical practice.These equipments for the laboratory are also used to offer courses for near‐peers that aid in the Anatomy Department. Courses are also made specifically for the anatomy research group (GIA – Grupo de Investigación en Anatomía) students, oriented to areas of interest. Through a tightly organized and collaborative mentoring structure, the group with 17 years of experience, has grown and inspired its members into research. Mentors and mentees benefit from scientific production, enhanced research skill training, and combined experience. Scientific output has increased steadily over time, demonstrating an effective method with longitudinal results of its effectiveness. The group promotes scientific publications in indexed journals, with the students as first authors. The mentor‐mentee relationships are nurtured causing appreciation and recognition bilaterally. Most students wish to continue with a clinical residency, however, most report they wish to continue with some form of clinical research.Support or Funding InformationNone

Gender disparities in scientific production: A nationwide assessment among physicians in Peru.

ObjectiveTo determine the presence of a gender gap in the scientific production among Peruvian physicians and analyze either gap is associated with the presence of observable factors or the presence of prejudices against female physicians.MethodsWe analyzed data from the National Survey of User Satisfaction in Health 2016, a nationally representative survey that collected information about medical professionals working in health institutions in Peru. The outcome of interest was the number of publications in indexed journals. We estimated the gender gap in scientific production using the Oaxaca-Blinder (OB) decomposition method.ResultsFrom the 2216 physicians surveyed, 252 reported published at least one article in an indexed journal. From physicians with scientific production, 37.7% were women. The analysis of OB decomposition showed a gap of 2.11 indexed publications, disfavoring female physicians (p<0.01). Likewise, the explained component was 1.36 publications, representing 64.5% of the total gap (p<0.05).ConclusionsThere is a gender gap in the number of publications in indexed journals among Peruvian physicians. This gap is mainly explained by observable factors, such as the years of medical practice, being an accredited researcher and being a professor.

The research output from medical institutions in South Asia between 2012 and 2017: An analysis of their quantity and quality

IntroductionThe eight countries of South Asia share similar backgrounds, together with similar health care related problems and a lack of medical facilities. They also have a total of 828 medical institutions both in the public and private sectors but sadly, their research output is generally thought to be poor both in quality and quantity. MethodsWe analyzed the research output from this region in terms of the number of publications in indexed journals, their citations and the h-index of the institutions using the Scopus database between 201217. These were compared with ten randomly selected leading institutes of the world. ResultsOnly 353 (42.7%) had produced a single indexed research article in the six years of the study period. The cumulative research output of all the countries during this period was 97,170, the biggest contributor being India (86.3%) followed by Pakistan (9.9%) and Bangladesh (1.4%). In terms of the mean number of the citations and h-index, India led with 1775 citations per institute with a mean h-index of 12.1. ConclusionDespite the immense health problems facing the countries, the overall research output from the South Asian countries is poor as evidenced by the cumulative number of publications or a comparison on a global scale. This needs urgent and serious attention. We suggest that intercountry research collaborations, student exchanges, compulsory research projects in undergraduate and postgraduate curricula, adequate funding, and incentives for research publication may be some of the ways forward.

Intellectual endogamy in the university

This article aims to analyse the multiple ways in which the neoliberal regulation of knowledge is negotiated by returning Chilean scholars. The data gathered suggest the construction of knowledge is highly regulated by a principle of intellectual endogamy. Intellectual endogamy is characterised by conservatism, reflected in a lack of diversity in research themes and problems and maintained by a peer-review system that controls scholars’ access to research funds. However, it is also characterised by instrumentalism, which is reflected in the requirements for obtaining research funds, such as publications in indexed journals and discourses of efficiency and productivity. Both facets engender a neoliberal regulation of academic work. This research encourages an expansion of the conversation about how academic mobility affects knowledge construction.
