How far do oral lectures at European Orthodontic Society congresses reach? A comparison of abstract publication rates, article citations, and social media mentions.

This study investigated the scientific impact of oral abstracts presented in five consecutive European Orthodontic Society (EOS) congresses in terms of full-text publication rates as well as citations and social media metrics (altmetrics) of the resulting articles. PubMed (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed) and Google Scholar (http://scholar.google.nl/) were screened to identify published articles originally presented as lectures at EOS 2015-2019. EOS date, abstract title, subject, number of authors, authors' names, first author's country of origin, and type of affiliation were extracted from congress abstract books. Altmetric Attention Scores (AASs), number of X (formerly Twitter) posts, Mendeley reads, and citations of the articles were retrieved from Altmetric Explorer and Web of Science (WoS) databases, respectively. Abstract details, full publication rates and Altmetric mentions and WoS citations of the related articles were analysed using univariable and multivariable logistic regression. In total, 51.79 to 73.91% of the lectures presented at EOS 2015-2019 were converted into peer-reviewed articles. There was a median interval of 10.95 months (interquartile range 20.5 months) between conference and publication dates. EOS congress year (overall Wald test P-value = .04) and number of authors (overall Wald test P-value < .01) were significant predictors for full-text publication of oral lectures. There was no significant effect of EOS presentation on AASs, citations, X posts, and Mendeley readers (P > .05). Journal impact factors and quartile rankings were not considered to determine the impact of the journals that published articles originally presented as EOS oral abstracts. Overall, 61.30% of EOS 2015-2019 lectures were published as full-length articles. Multi-authored abstracts presented higher odds of publication, whereas oral abstracts presented at EOS 2015 and 2018 had the lowest probabilities to reach full publication. EOS abstract-based articles were assigned similar numbers of citations and AASs to articles not presented at EOS congresses.

An analysis regarding the ultimate outcome of abstracts presented at the European Paediatric Surgeons' Association (EUPSA) Congresses.

The objective of this study is to analyze the conversion rate of abstracts presented at the European Paediatric Surgeons' Association (EUPSA) congress into full-text publications and to conduct a thorough analysis of the attributes and quality of the papers published. Abstract books including the years 2017 to 2022 were reviewed. Searches on PubMed and Google Scholar, utilizing keywords from the titles and the author names, were conducted to trace subsequent full-text publications. A categorical analysis detected variations and trends, with a significance threshold of P < 0.05. Quantitative data were presented as means ± standard deviations (SD), while categorical data were represented as counts (n) and percentages (%). A total of 2,139 abstracts were presented at the EUPSA annual meetings during five consecutive congresses. The average number of presented abstracts was 427.6 ± 20.4 per year from across 63 different countries. European countries contributed the majority (71%). The presentations included both oral (n=817, 38.2%) and poster presentations (n=1322, 61.8%). They predominantly focused on clinical topics (90.6%). Single-center retrospective studies were the most common study design (43.7%). Out of all abstracts presented, 1033 (48.3%) were published within an average time interval of 1.39 ± 1.19 years after presentation. Most journals had an impact factor (IF) between 1 and 5 (74.5%). There was no significant year-to-year variation in publication rates (p=1). Basic science studies were published in journals with significantly higher IF compared to clinical studies (p<0.001). The publication rate of abstracts presented at the EUPSA annual congress stands at 48.3%, aligning with the rates observed in other similar studies. This suggests that abstracts submitted to the EUPSA congresses were evaluated and scored rigorously, adhering to international selection criteria. Furthermore, the majority of these abstracts were published in journals with moderate to high impact factors, providing quantitative evidence of the scientific quality of research within the field of pediatric surgery.

Results of the cancer screening program in urban areas in Shaanxi province of China, 2019-2020

Objective: Analyze the cancer screening status of the cancer screening program in urban areas in Shaanxi province in 2019-2020. Methods: The early diagnosis and early treatment project for urban cancers carried out high-risk population screening for 5 types of high-incidence malignant tumors (breast cancer, lung cancer, upper gastrointestinal cancer, liver cancer, and colorectal cancer) in urban areas. Three prefecture-level cities in Shaanxi province with a population of over 1 million (Xi'an, Baoji, and Shangluo) were selected, and 4 communities with a relatively good working foundation were selected in each city. The general population aged 45-74 years was surveyed on the principles of informed consent and voluntariness, and high-risk groups identified through the questionnaire were further subjected to free endoscopy, ultrasound, CT, and other clinical screenings. The high-risk rates, screening compliance rates, and positive detection rates of the above 5 types of malignant tumors were analyzed. Results: A total of 19 632 people completed the survey effectively, with the proportion of male participants (40.0%) lower than that of females (60.0%). A total of 10 102 high-risk groups were identified, with an initial screening high-risk rate of 51.5%, and the high-risk rates for the 5 types of cancers were 24.1% for breast cancer, 28.6% for lung cancer, 9.1% for upper gastrointestinal cancer, 4.0% for liver cancer, and 20.0% for colorectal cancer. Among the 14 960 person-time initially assessed as high-risk, 5 129 person-time received clinical screening, with a screening compliance rate of 34.3%. The number of people receiving clinical screening and the screening compliance rates for the 5 types of cancers were 1 192 (41.9%) for breast cancer, 2 081 (37.1%) for lung cancer, 574 (32.0%) for upper gastrointestinal cancer, 404 (51.3%) for liver cancer, and 878 (22.3%) for colorectal cancer, with positive detection numbers and rates of 179 (15.0%) for breast, 289 (13.9%) for lung, 9 (1.6%) for upper gastrointestinal, 14 (3.5%) for suspected liver, and 67 (7.6%) for colorectal, respectively. Conclusion: The cancer screening status of the cancer screening program in urban areas in Shaanxi province is beneficial for the detection of precancerous lesions and early cancer patients, and improving the early diagnosis and treatment rate of patients, but the public participation rate is not high, and the project management model and technical plan need to be further improved.

A “Delve” into the evidence of AI in production of academic business literature

This study tests the hypothesis that generative AI is impacting the volume of academic publications in the business subject disciplines. The author performed a t-test using the average growth rates of articles published in the database ProQuest ABI/INFORM Global containing keywords or phrases purported to be commonly used in content generated by AI during the years before and after common generative AI availability. Results show evidence that publication rates after generative AI availability experienced an improbably high deviation from the norm. This indicates the potential of AI impacting the scholarly output of academic literature in the business subject discipline.

Current state of quality improvement research across cardiac ICUs: a Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Society (PCICS) survey.

Outcomes for children with heart disease improved over the past decades. Quality improvement (QI) research in paediatric cardiac critical care is a key driver of improvement. The availability and variability of QI research across the field is unknown. This project represents a step in understanding the role. The Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Society (PCICS) can serve to support institutions' needs, drive collaborations, and utilise available infrastructure at member institutions for improvement work. The PCICS Quality Improvement and Safety Committee developed a survey to assess the state of QI research. The survey was disseminated over several months and available via QR code at the World Congress of Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery in 2023. Fifty-eight respondents completed the survey representing at least 38 unique institutions. Most respondents participated in QI research (52/58, 90%). Most QI projects were single centre (41% of respondents), and of those, the majority were from a minority of institutions (13 institutions [34% of total institutions]). QI support is available at slightly more than half of units, and 55% (32/58) have access to a QI specialist. QI support and rate of publications is significantly lower for small/medium units as compared to large units. Respondents suggested most interest from PCICS in networking with other members with similar project ideas (50/58, 86%). PCICS member institutions are committed to QI research, with limitations in support, local specialists, and networking. Increasing connectivity and accessibility to QI resources may reduce burden to individual members and institutions to achieve QI research.

From Thesis to Scientific Articles: Publication of Neonatal Research in Ecuador

Objective: To determine the proportion of scientific articles published by health professionals in Neonatology services in Ecuador in the last 20 years. Theoretical framework: Perinatal research is a priority in public health. Writing a thesis allows students to acquire research skills. Publishing these findings in indexed journals ensures their validity and relevance, becoming references for future studies, systematic reviews, hospital protocols and clinical guidelines. Method: Bibliometric study that examined the temporal evolution, research design, language, affiliations, keywords, journals and academic degrees of thesis writers. The search was carried out in databases and repositories from the last 20 years, using Zotero, Mendeley, Rayyan and R for the analysis. Results and Discussion: It was identified that 13% of the theses were published in indexed journals in Ecuador. (79%) corresponded to postgraduate studies in pediatrics and neonatology. Almost half (48.97%) were published in local journals and the majority (63.69%) in Spanish. The low rate of scientific publication is a common problem in Spanish-speaking countries. Ecuador contributes only 0.11% of world publications. Research implications: Strengthen research training for students and encourage other professionals involved in newborn care to publish their theses. Originality/Value: The publication of theses as scientific articles contributes to the advancement of knowledge. This process broadens the scope of research, enhancing its impact and application in clinical practice and evidence-based decision-making.

Risk communication and public response to potential radiation emergencies in New York City.

Public knowledge and awareness about radiation (both natural and manmade) tend to be low, while perceived risk of radiation tends to be high. High perceptions of risk associated with radiation have been linked to the affect heuristic and general feelings of dread, which are often not proportionate to actual risk. For example, studies routinely show that members of the public rate the risk of radiation from nuclear power plants as significantly higher (and riskier) than radiation from medical X-rays. This disconnect can have implications for adoption of protective actions during a potential radiation emergency and the perceived efficacy of these actions. This study explores how risk communication efforts influence public risk perceptions, intended protective action, and perceived efficacy of those actions. Using unique data from a survey of New York City adults, we analyze how information provision using different formats-no information, an infographic, an informational video-impact perceptions and response to a hypothetical radiation emergency. We hypothesize that respondents who receive some information, either through the infographic or the video, will have higher perceived efficacy and are more likely to take protective action. Findings suggest that providing information about what to do during a radiation emergency has a statistically significant impact on both perceived efficacy and adoption of protective action. Respondents who saw the informational video were most likely to say that they would take the correct protective actions and had the highest perceived efficacy, followed by those who saw the infographic.

Career Paths, Practice Location, and Scholarly Contributions of American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship Graduates, 2000–2021

Purpose: To characterize American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS) fellowship graduates’ career paths and contributions to society missions, including trends across gender, time, and geography. Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, ASOPRS fellowship graduates from 2000 to 2021 were stratified by demographics, time, and geography. Main outcomes were career paths and contributions to ASOPRS missions of advancing education, research, and quality of clinical practice. Results: Among 474 ASOPRS graduates, women increased from 19% (2000–2005) to 47% (2016–2021). Women contributed equally to men in most ASOPRS missions but were underrepresented as fellowship directors (p = 0.03). Over time, graduates after 2005 had higher publication rates (adjusted p &lt; 0.001). Geographically, Northeast fellows (adjusted p = 0.034) and Midwest employment (adjusted p = 0.003) correlated with academic careers, while West employment conferred community careers (adjusted p &lt; 0.001). Geographic retention near fellowship directly correlated with academic careers (adjusted p = 0.006), educational roles (adjusted p &lt; 0.001), and publications (adjusted p = 0.006). Forty-one percent practiced in the 5 most saturated states, with fewer in the Midwest. The attrition rate of United States ASOPRS fellows who left the national workforce was 2%. Conclusions: From 2000 to 2021, ASOPRS fellows entered diverse career paths with increasing gender parity, though women were underrepresented as fellowship directors. Career paths and contributions to the field varied geographically. Graduates frequently practice in saturated states, potentially exacerbating access disparities in underserved regions. These findings highlight opportunities to address geographic differences, promote workforce diversity, and align fellowships with society objectives.

A qualitative study exploring graduated medical residents’ research experiences, barriers to publication and strategies to improve publication rates from medical residents

BackgroundIn Kenya, postgraduate medical residents must complete a research dissertation for their Master of Medicine studies. However, the subsequent publication rate is lower than in higher-income settings, limiting the availability of population-specific data. This study explored residents’ experiences with research, reasons for the low publication rate, and strategies to improve publication rates.MethodsIn-depth interviews were conducted with 9 faculty members and non-academic support staff, as well as 18 Master of Medicine graduates who had successfully completed their research projects, to investigate their experiences with conducting, supervising, and publishing research. The interview data was analysed using inductive thematic analysis. The study also explored strategies to improve publication rates.ResultsThe graduates (former medical residents) described difficult research journeys – from concept development to final submission of dissertation – which discouraged them from seeking publication. Many faculty and staff lacked time or sufficient expertise to successfully guide residents to publication. Departmental research culture, faculty expertise as supervisors and prioritisation of clinical work over research and lack of dedicated research time impacted both residents’ and faculty capacity for research. Strategies to improve publication rates focused on developing faculty research expertise, more protected research time, and a more structured approach to teaching research methodology, including academic writing skills.ConclusionsResidents in low- and middle-income countries such as Kenya encounter systemic and personal challenges to successful publication of research. The ease or difficulty of a resident’s research journey influences their attitudes to subsequent publication. Strategies to improve publication rates can improve the dissemination of relevant research data in such settings.

Comprehensive analysis of clinical research profiles and study characteristics of oral potentially malignant disorders: an observational study

ObjectiveThe study aims to present an observational study of clinical trials on Oral Potentially Malignant Disorders (OPMDs) and corresponding publications. Study design and settingWe searched the OPMDs-related clinical studies registered in the ClinicalTrials.gov database before March 1, 2024. Subsequently, we investigated the publication status of primary completed studies using PubMed and Google Scholar. ResultsA total of 185 studies were identified for analysis, including 141 interventional studies and 44 observational studies. The most commonly studied disease type was oral lichen planus (OLP), accounting for 113 studies (61.1 %). Interventional studies on OPMDs were predominantly early-phased, blind, randomized, parallel and single-center. The primary purpose of these studies was treatment (106, 75.2 %). Among the treatments, herbal medicine (21, 19.8 %), photodynamic therapy (17, 16.0 %), and glucocorticoids (14, 13.2 %) were of greatest interest. In addition, 58 (63.0 %) of the primarily completed interventional studies were published, with a median time to publication of 33.6 months. Published interventional studies including OLP patients and factorial designs had shorter time to publication. However, these studies were less frequently published in high-impact journals and most primary results were positive. ConclusionsClinical trials on OPMDs predominantly focused on OLP and herbal medicine. The quality of studies is unsatisfactory and publication rate is suboptimal. Improvements are needed in ClinicalTrials.gov registration standards, high-quality study design and more stringent publishing requirements.

NANOENCAPSULATION OF SPIRULINA SP. LEB 18 MICROALGAE BIOMASS USING ELECTROSPRAY TECHNIQUE AND APPLICATION IN CHOCOLATE MILK

Chocolate powder is a widely consumed food, but it has a high sugar content. Spirulina microalgae contains high nutritional value and can be used to enrich foods. However, microalgae has strong sensory characteristics. To add it to food, it is necessary to hide these characteristics, such as through nanoencapsulation. Therefore, the objective of this work was to develop nanospheres with Spirulina biomass by nanoencapsulation and apply them in chocolate milk. This nanospheres were produced through the electrospraying technique, with chitosan and Spirulina. The best parameters to produce nanospheres were a polymeric solution with 0.50% chitosan, electric potential of 24kV, and capillary diameter of 0.70mm. These resulted in more uniform nanoparticles without the presence of a residual solvent. Nanospheres with Spirulina sp. LEB 18 are stable up to approximately 200 °C. Chocolate milk containing nanospheres with Spirulina was formulated to contain 5% Spirulina, which increased the protein content by 16.3%, lipids by 88.9% and ash by 33.9% in this food compared to the control. It received an average score of 6.9 in the sensory analysis and had a public acceptance rate of 76.3%. By incorporating 300mL of chocolate milk containing nanospheres with Spirulina into school meals, children up to 5 years old (weighing approximately 18kg) meet their daily protein requirement in a single serving.

Scientific Paper Writing Training: A Boost to Scientific Publication at Institut Agama Islam Nahdlatul Ulama Bangil

Institut Agama Islam Nahdlatul Ulama Bangil is a private university in East Java, Indonesia, affiliated with Nahdlatul Ulama. Despite its commitment to quality education based on Islamic values, the university's lecturers face challenges in publishing scientific articles. Previous research underscores the importance of training, workshops, and technology tools in improving lecturers' scientific publication skills. This article proposes a Participatory Action Research approach for scientific article writing training, involving issue identification, active lecturer involvement, planning, implementation, and evaluation. This approach fosters collaboration and enhances lecturers' scientific writing abilities. Similar successful approaches in other institutions highlight the potential positive outcomes of such training. The goal is to empower lecturers, boost publication rates, and contribute to individual and institutional advancement.

Collaborations in publications on pediatric anesthesiology in the D-A-CH countries

Collaborations are an essential element of scientific activity and particularly important in fields such as pediatric anesthesiology, where the evidence base in general is relatively limited. Arecent scientometric analysis revealed ageographic diversification of publication activity in pediatric anesthesiology within the last two decades, accompanied by asurge in international collaborations. Given the hypothesis of asimilar growth in the activity and dynamics of publications in pediatric anesthesiology, the objective of this scientometric study was to analyze the publication activity and collaboration habits in research in pediatric anesthesiology from Germany, Austria and Switzerland (D-A-CH). This secondary analysis identified all publications on pediatric anesthesiology with an affiliation from the D‑A-CH countries between 2001 and 2020 from PubMed and Web of Science. The query parameters included the timeframe 2001-2020, authors' affiliations tied to anesthesiology departments (using various forms of the term "anesthesia"), and the mention of pediatric interest in titles or abstracts. The data underwent standardization to account for linguistic variations. The publications were assigned to astate, city and institution based on the correspondence address, to ayear based on the publication date and to asource based on the journal. The primary endpoint was publication activity and dynamics, represented by the number of publications and the respective growth rates (calculated as the linear regression slope). Secondary endpoints included the share of collaborations within and outside the D‑A-CH region (at the country and institutional level), the distribution of publication activity and the most prominent sources of publications. Between 2001 and 2020 atotal of 3406 publications on pediatric anesthesiology involving authors from the D‑A-CH countries were identified. Of these 2807 (82.4%) had acorrespondence address in D‑A-CH. The average annual growth rate of publications with acorrespondence address was + 2.9% for the D‑A-CH countries and + 7.7% for publications with collaborations. The number of publications in which an institution from D‑A-CH was named as acoauthor from acorrespondence address outside D‑A-CH also increased by an average of 7.4% per year during the study period. The majority of collaborations occurred between institutions within the D‑A-CH region, although Swiss institutions exhibited amuch higher proportion of collaborations outside the region. Of all publications with acorrespondence address 90% originated from 46cities. The most prominent source was Die Anästhesiologie for publications from Germany, and Pediatric Anesthesia for publications from Austria and Switzerland. The number of publications in pediatric anesthesiology from the D‑A-CH countries has increased over the past two decades, accompanied by asurge in collaborations. It is hoped that increased collaboration will contribute to ahigher level of evidence in pediatric anesthesiology care.

Chiropractic and Spinal Manipulation: A Review of Research Trends, Evidence Gaps, and Guideline Recommendations

Chiropractors diagnose and manage musculoskeletal disorders, commonly using spinal manipulative therapy (SMT). Over the past half-century, the chiropractic profession has seen increased utilization in the United States following Medicare authorization for payment of chiropractic SMT in 1972. We reviewed chiropractic research trends since that year and recent clinical practice guideline (CPG) recommendations regarding SMT. We searched Scopus for articles associated with chiropractic (spanning 1972–2024), analyzing publication trends and keywords, and searched PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science for CPGs addressing SMT use (spanning 2013–2024). We identified 6286 articles on chiropractic. The rate of publication trended upward. Keywords initially related to historical evolution, scope of practice, medicolegal, and regulatory aspects evolved to include randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews. We identified 33 CPGs, providing a total of 59 SMT-related recommendations. The recommendations primarily targeted low back pain (n = 21) and neck pain (n = 14); of these, 90% favored SMT for low back pain while 100% favored SMT for neck pain. Recent CPG recommendations favored SMT for tension-type and cervicogenic headaches. There has been substantial growth in the number and quality of chiropractic research articles over the past 50 years, resulting in multiple CPG recommendations favoring SMT. These findings reinforce the utility of SMT for spine-related disorders.

Assessment and comparison of tourist potential and public ratings of regions for the regional tourist market development (by the example of Orel region)

Objective: to develop and test the method of estimating a tourism potential of regions, the method of comparing them with public ratings of regions; to diagnose problem areas of management when forming the regional market of tourist services and justify recommendations for its development. Methods: general scientific and general logical methods, analysis, synthesis, comparison, generalization; statistical and correlation analysis. Results: the paper presents the author’s method of constructing summary estimates of the regions’ tourism potential, integrating official statistical indicators. Due to the introduction of dimensionless relative values, the difficulties of accounting for different-sized indicators were resolved. The obtained estimates were used to form an objective idea of the strength of the regions’ tourism potential, to compare them, to assess the opportunities and determine the prospects for tourism development in the region. Since one of the obstacles in solving this task is low public ratings, it is important to be able to compare them with objective assessments. For this purpose, we have developed and tested a method of comparing the summary estimates of the regions’ tourism potential with their ratings, in particular, with the values of the National Tourism Rating – 2022. As a result, by the example of Orel region, the disproportions were revealed that indicate the inefficient use of the region’s tourism potential. Based on the analysis of the regional strategies implementation, programs and practices of tourism organization and problem areas of management, recommendations are formulated, the implementation of which guarantees the economic development of the region and tourism sphere. Scientific novelty: the method of constructing summary estimates of the regions’ tourism potential is developed; the method of comparing the summary estimates of tourism potential with public ratings of regions is proposed and tested. The disproportions in assessments and ratings are substantiated quantitatively. The problem areas of management in the formation of the regional tourist services market are diagnosed; recommendations for its development are given. Practical significance: the study results can be used by business entities and authorities to formulate strategies and programs of regional development; the presented method of comparing the tourism potential and ratings of regions can be used in scientific, pedagogical and research activities.

Barriers to Research Publication for Undergraduate Medical Students in Makkah, Saudi Arabia: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background Scientific research is an approach to acquiring information to enhance thequality of the world. The aim of thisstudywasto identify the obstacles among undergraduate medical students to publish their study papers. Materials and methods Thiswasa web-based descriptive cross-sectional study that usedan online survey to collect data frommedical students ofUmm Al-QuraUniversity in Makkah, Saudi Arabia. The minimum sample size required for the study calculated bytheRaosoft websitewas323. Statistical analysis was conducted with IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 25 (Released 2017; IBM Corp., Armonk, New York, United States). Results A total of 337 medical students were included in the study. The frequencies of male and female students were relatively comparable, with a marginally greater proportion of male students (177, 52.5%).The majority of students (294, 87.2%) had participated in at least one research project. Notably, 159 (47.2%) students had engaged in more than three research projects, whereas 42 (12.4%) had experience with only one previous research project.A notable peak in publication rate was observed for the year 2023, indicating the highest rate within the study period.The most frequently encountered obstacle in research publication was poor academic teaching, as reported by 133 (39.5%) students, followed by lack of active research groups (130, 38.6%), lack of time (122, 36.2%), and lack of supervisors in their preferred specialty (91, 27%).Associations were found between students' participation in research projects and various demographic characteristics. Among medical students who had previously participated in a research group, 174 (51.7%) were female, and 163 (48.3%) were male (p=0.001). In terms of academic year, most students who participated in a research project were in their sixthyear (143, 42.5%), followed by medical interns (81, 24.1%) and fourth-year medical students (54, 16%), with these differences being statistically significant (p=0.001). Finally, the medical students' grade point average showed no statistically significant association with participation in a research project. Conclusion To boost publication rates and research experience of graduating medical students, it is important to articulate the barriers that prevent them from publishing their research. Educators and supervisors of medical research should strongly consider developing a framework that addresses current and future obstacles.

Fate of Abstracts Presented at Annual Meetings of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons from 2015 to 2019

Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) annual meetings provide opportunities to disseminate cardiothoracic research. We assessed rates of publication of STS abstracts as manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals over five years and determined factors associated with successful publication. The STS "Annual Meeting Archive" was searched online for abstract books from STS annual meetings from 2015-2019. Abstract books were reviewed for information about presented abstracts. A PubMed and Google search was then performed to identify corresponding peer-reviewed journal publications. A total of 1451 abstracts were presented at STS annual meetings from 2015-2019. Overall publication rate of accepted abstracts as manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals was 1097/1451=75.60%. Most published manuscripts were published in The Annals of Thoracic Surgery (750/1097=68.37%). Median duration between abstract presentation and peer-reviewed journal publication was 313[IQR=212.5-458] days. Only 29/1451=2.00% of abstracts won an award, and all 29 of these award-winning abstracts were published as a manuscript. Oral presentation was associated with increased odds of publication compared to poster presentation (OR=1.28[95% CI=1.04-1.71], p=0.021). Median 5-year impact factor of peer-reviewed journals containing these manuscripts was 5.04[IQR=5.04-5.04], and corresponding manuscripts were cited a median of 4[IQR=1-9] times. Overall, 836/1097=76.20% of manuscripts published in peer-reviewed scientific journals had a corresponding North American author. Annual STS meetings are a forum for the presentation of high-quality research. The rate of publication of accepted STS abstracts as manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals is >75%, comparing favorably with national meetings of other surgical societies, and >2/3 of published manuscripts are published in STS's official journal.

EnzChemRED, a rich enzyme chemistry relation extraction dataset

Expert curation is essential to capture knowledge of enzyme functions from the scientific literature in FAIR open knowledgebases but cannot keep pace with the rate of new discoveries and new publications. In this work we present EnzChemRED, for Enzyme Chemistry Relation Extraction Dataset, a new training and benchmarking dataset to support the development of Natural Language Processing (NLP) methods such as (large) language models that can assist enzyme curation. EnzChemRED consists of 1,210 expert curated PubMed abstracts where enzymes and the chemical reactions they catalyze are annotated using identifiers from the protein knowledgebase UniProtKB and the chemical ontology ChEBI. We show that fine-tuning language models with EnzChemRED significantly boosts their ability to identify proteins and chemicals in text (86.30% F1 score) and to extract the chemical conversions (86.66% F1 score) and the enzymes that catalyze those conversions (83.79% F1 score). We apply our methods to abstracts at PubMed scale to create a draft map of enzyme functions in literature to guide curation efforts in UniProtKB and the reaction knowledgebase Rhea.

A decade in review: bibliometric analysis of sustainable performance trends in higher education institutes

The sustainable performance of higher education institutes (HEIs) is key to efficiently manage educational institutes in the long run, to get financial aid from the government, and to keep the interest of stakeholders in the institutions. Researchers have focused on examining the impact of a sustainable curriculum, sustainable teaching methodologies, sustainable campuses, and tools for assessing sustainability in HEIs in past literature. The present bibliometric analysis, combined with network analysis, aims to explore the literature to identify research gaps in the field of sustainable performance or sustainability performance of HEIs. We have employed a Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) flow diagram to analyze the results obtained from Scopus, Web of Science (WoS), and EBSCOhost databases. A bibliometric analysis using Biblioshiny web application and VOSviewer software was performed on the 263 articles included in the study after screening. The results revealed that the annual growth rate of publications is increasing, indicating that the sustainability performance of HEIs is gaining momentum after the introduction of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2017. The production of articles in the field is highest from advanced European countries and the United States, but only a few articles are published from Asian countries. The authors with the highest number of publications and the most cited research article in the field are Leal Filho and Wals, respectively. Authors keywords in HEIs (or institutions) not only have a strong link with sustainability, sustainable education, green campus, and sustainability assessment but also have a small network with sustainable performance, green knowledge sharing, green knowledge management, green human resource management practices, green teams, change management, and organizational commitment. These findings can be used by future researchers to identify unexplored research areas in different contexts.

Global research trends on the links between gut microbiota and radiotherapy: a bibliometric analysis (2004-2023).

There is a crosstalk between gut microbiota and radiotherapy. The aim of this study is to use bibliometric analysis to explore the research status and development trends of research on gut microbiota and radiotherapy. A literature search regarding publications on gut microbiota and radiotherapy from 2004 to 2023 was retrieved. CiteSpace and VOSviewer were used to conduct the bibliometric analysis. The growth rate of publications, leading countries and institutions, preferred journals, top authors and co-cited authors, top co-cited references, keywords and citation were analyzed in this study. A total of 2821 papers were extracted. The number of papers has increased rapidly over the past decade, especially after 2017. The USA and China had the most publications and made great contributions to this field. The Chinese Academy of Sciences stood out as the institution with the highest number of publications, followed by the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences & Peking Union Medical College. The most influential authors were Fan Saijun and Li Yuan. PLoS One had the most publications and the most total citations. Highly cited papers and high-frequency keywords illustrated the current status and trends. Furthermore, analysis of keyword with burst revealed that immunotherapy, acid, intestinal barrier, therapy, immunotherapy, fecal microbiota transplantation, etc, are at the forefront of research in this area. This study provides an overview of research on gut microbiota and radiotherapy, highlighting influential contributors, impactful publications, and emerging trends. Our finding suggests avenues for further exploration to improve clinical outcomes.
