In this review, we combined studies that evaluated the relationship between sleep during the pandemic and the increased incidence of mental disorders, primarily anxiety disorders, since outbreaks of infectious diseases are associated with triggering psychological distress and changes in the quality and quantity of sleep. Method: This study used an integrative review to critically and coherently analyze the changes resulting from COVID-19 in sleep and mental health. For this purpose, a review of the last 5 years was carried out in the LILACS, Scielo, and Pubmed databases using the descriptors “sleep”, “sleep disorders”, “anxiety”, “epidemics”, “pandemics” and “COVID-19". Final Considerations: In short, during the pandemic, serious alterations in the biological rhythm, and chronotype of sleep habits of university students, health professionals, and the population in general, with an intense prevalence of anxiety disorder. Thus, this study suggests that the psychological impact of quarantine is broad, substantial, and can be long-lasting. In addition, the need for more research focusing on this theme was evident, to identify the obstacles and consequences of social restriction and thus develop effective strategies that improve the quality and quantity of sleep and the mental health of the population.

BackgroundCOVID-19 is a viral infectious disease that spreads quickly through droplets. It is highly contagious and could overwhelm the health system. Because of that, many governments established health quarantines for suspected infected people to minimize the spread of this disease.ObjectiveThis study aimed to assess the prevalence of depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms and to address the associated risk factors among quarantined non-healthcare workers, quarantined healthcare workers, and medical staff in the Ministry of Health quarantine facility.Patients and MethodsWe conducted an analytical cross-sectional study at the health quarantine in Jazan, Saudi Arabia. The total number of participants was 301 individuals. Furthermore, the study questionnaire was composed of three sections, the first two were the background and clinical characteristics, and the last one was DASS 21 scale. Also, we used SPSS software to analyze the data. Lastly, we implemented logistic regression to assess the predictors of depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms.ResultsThe prevalence of depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms among quarantined non-healthcare workers were 51.9%, 60.2%, and 40.6%, respectively. These prevalences were 25.0%, 29.8%, and 16.9% among quarantined healthcare workers and 20.5%, 20.5%, and 27.3% among the medical staff. The predictors of depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms among the study participants were female gender, perceived COVID-19 stigma, presence of other relatives in quarantine, comorbidities, and abnormal sleep duration.Conclusion and RecommendationsHealth quarantine is an environment that could negatively affect people’s mental health. The quarantined non-healthcare workers were the most affected study participants inside this environment. Therefore, the availability of mental health services there could minimize their depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms. Moreover, a home quarantine would be better to reduce these negative symptoms whenever possible.

Depression among higher education students in Greece during the first C19 lockdown

Abstract Background The imposition of containment measures internationally during the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic has indicated the need for data on the psychological impact of quarantine. We use the C19 ISWS Greek dataset to examine self-reported depression in relation to alcohol and tobacco use, social contacts, relationship status and perceived risk of infection. Methods Online survey data was collected between May-June 2020. Eligible participants were higher education students in Greece and 889 students participated. We performed frequency analysis on the participants who completed the questionnaire (N = 585). Weights were applied to eliminate response bias and adjust the sample survey means and proportions to the student population in the country. Results Findings suggest that depressive symptoms are more frequent among female students, first generation migrant students and those in their first year of study. Students who were anxious about getting infected with COVID-19 reported higher rates of depressive symptoms. However, students with slightly higher rates of depression were not very worried about getting severely ill from an infection. The share of students who drunk systematically did not change during the COVID-19 outbreak, their rate is low (0% - 2.2%) and they do not report high rates of depressive symptoms. Depression scores seem to be affected by relationship status, the degree of contacts with friends, and the availability of a trusted person. Results indicate that the fewer the contacts with friends are, the higher the mean depression score is. Conclusions The results confirm the gender-gap in depression and are in line with evidence indicating the high prevalence of depression among women in Greece in the aftermath of austerity and recession. As Greece was one of the South-European countries hardest hit by economic crisis, it is possible that negative effects of the crisis have had a cumulative effect on students' mental health in the pandemic.

Some of these aspects can be considered the effect of a mass psychosis, people being misinformed by television news, such as the concept of fake news having the intention of manipulation; others misinterpret the clear message, with severe consequences over the state of calm. During this crisis, all psychiatrists are facing new challenges such as sustaining the well-being of healthcare personnel, looking over the need of patient’s mental well-being, taking care of the psychological impact of quarantine, self-isolation and social stigma associated with COVID 19. An important aspect in Romania is represented by different cultural beliefs that are not usually present in other cultures but are characteristic in our population and can influence the outcome of the virus evolution. Protection from God, believing that spirituality and religiosity can become a fence in the confrontation with the virus, and these convictions could become a real impediment in understating and respecting the protocols and the rules of prevention. The ethical issue for psychiatrists is how to take into account patients’ beliefs in time of restrictive measures imposed by COVID19 pandemic? All in all, the COVID19 pandemic spread represents a real challenge for all employees in the medical system, but especially to psychiatrists, who should deal with patients whose capacity to understand the real/whole picture is deteriorated. The effects of COVID-19 on self-harm in a high-secure psychiatry hospital

Purpose Self-harm, including death from suicide, remains a significant public health challenge. The prison population is known to be a high-risk group for self-harm and suicide. The purpose of this study is to explore the trends in the frequency of self-harm over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic within a high-secure hospital. The authors hypothesised that the pandemic could adversely affect the mental health of patients, which could increase the rates of self-harm. Reasons for changes in the frequency of self-harm and the strategies used in response to the pandemic were also investigated. Design/methodology/approach This paper encompasses findings from a quality improvement project that investigated self-harming behaviours from February 2020 to February 2021 in a high-secure psychiatric hospital. Incidents of self-harm were recorded based on the hospital’s ward structure. Data was collected on the incidence of self-harm rates over the COVID-19 pandemic, with a focus on how the pandemic may have had an effect on self-harm. Findings This paper found an increase in the incidents of self-harm during the initial stages of the pandemic. The first national lockdown period yielded a rise in self-harm incidents from pre-COVID levels. The frequency of self-harm reduced following the first lockdown and returned to pre-COVID levels. The authors explored the psychological effects of COVID, isolation, interpersonal dynamics and changes in the delivery of care as reasons for these trends. Practical implications This study demonstrates the substantial challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic to secure psychiatric services. Having an awareness of how the pandemic can impact on self-harm is important, as it allows the correct balance of restriction of our patients’ liberty to a degree deemed necessary to control the pandemic and the delivery of effective patient care. The key clinical implications include the importance of direct face-to-face patient contact, effective communication, therapeutic interventions and activities, the psychological impact of quarantine and the influence the pandemic can have on an individual’s function of self-harm. Originality/value This paper is the first, to the authors’ knowledge, to explore the impact of COVID-19 in a high-security psychiatric hospital. The authors also explore possible explanations for the changes in the trends of self-harm and include the consideration of strategies for improving the prevention and management of self-harm in high-secure settings during a pandemic.

Effect of coping strategies on acute stress during the COVID–19 pandemic in Greece

Background: The psychological impact of quarantine, due to the SARS COVID-19 outbreak, was examined with a specific focus on the relationship between 7 coping strategies: (i) active coping, (ii) positive reframing, (iii) acceptance, (iv) use of emotional support, (v) religion, (vi) substance use and (vii) self-blame and acute stress. This study aimed to identify specifically which of those coping strategies could increase or decrease acute stress levels.Method and Material: The data collection took place during the lockdown and was performed using online surveys. The finale sample size reached up to 1154 Greek adults (age M= 40.51). Two adapted and translated scales were used to measure the variables of interest, including: Brief-COPE questionnaire as well as Acute Stress Disorder Scale (ASDS).Results: “Active coping”, “acceptance”, “positive reframing” and “emotional support”, four of the coping strategies examined, that were found to be significantly associated with stress reduction. Meanwhile, “religion”, “self-blame” and “substance use” were not associated with stress reduction. Conclusions: This study initially provides an insight of acute stress and effective coping strategies associated with the quarantine period during the COVID – 19 pandemic in Greece. The outcome of this study equip support for the expected inflation of the mental health issues stemmed from the unusual stressors, and urge clinicians, mental health providers, and public agencies to assemble, in an attempt to make possible the widespread implementation of more effective and beneficial coping strategies.

COVID-19: Psychological impact of quarantine in children due to pandemic: A case study in Doda of Jammu and Kashmir

The emergence of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) from Wuhan city of China engulfed almost the entire world and created a global pandemic. Several countries declared this pandemic as national emergency, forcing millions of people to go into lockdown. This sudden social isolation has caused enormous disruption of daily routine for the global community, especially children. To minimize the transmission of this virus all the educational institutions were closed and moved to online learning to encourage and adhere to social distancing guidelines issued by the authorities from time to time. This abrupt change in the learning environment, restrictions in social interaction and other activities caused unusual situation in the development of child brain. Therefore, it is important and obligatory for the scientific community and healthcare workers to access and analyse the impact of Covid -19 pandemic on the mental health of children. The present article is a case study and was conducted in Doda of Jammu and Kashmir regarding the impact of quarantine on the children.

Pandemia do coronavírus e impactos na saúde mental: uma revisão integrativa da literatura

Em cenários de pandemia, como a COVID-19, a ruptura da cadeia de infecção é fundamental para a proteção da saúde da população. Este processo pode ser atingido mediante a adoção de medidas de restrição do contato humano, como isolamento, quarentena e distanciamento social. Embora fundamentadas em achados científicos e necessárias para conter o avanço da COVID-19, as medidas de isolamento social pode gerar impactos à saúde mental da população. Nesse sentido, a presente pesquisa visa avaliar a produção científica a respeito dos impactos da quarentena decorrente da COVID-19 na saúde mental. Trata-se de uma revisão integrativa da literatura científica, realizada por meio da exploração nas bases de dados PubMed e Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde (BVS), no período de Março de 2020. Nessas bases de dados, foram utilizadas as palavras-chave: COVID-19 and psychological consequences, COVID-19 and psychological impact of quarantine, obteve-se 10 artigos, dos quais 4 artigos, foram incluídos na análise após a exclusão de artigos duplicados e revisões de literatura, sendo 3 da PubMed e 1 da BVS. Os resultados sugerem alta frequência de relatos de reações e sintomas possivelmente associados a transtornos mentais, tais como queixas de ansiedade, depressão, insônia, estresse, pânico, solidão, angústia, obsessão e compulsão entre outros. Ficou evidente que grupos de risco como idosos e pessoas com doenças crônicas apresentaram maior probabilidade para o desenvolvimento de transtornos mentais. Ademais, análises dos impactos do coronavírus na dimensão psicológica podem corroborar para construção de intervenções pautadas na promoção, prevenção e tratamento em saúde mental.

Hope during the COVID-19 outbreak: coping with the psychological impact of quarantine

ABSTRACT The COVID-19 outbreak and the worldwide lockdown policy have an impact on citizens in different countries. Social isolation has been difficult for many people, and especially to those experiencing quarantine. To identify protective factors from negative outcomes of the quarantine, this study examined the mediation of internet-focused coping, hope and loneliness, in the relationship between staying in quarantine and experiencing psychological distress. A total of 275 participants were divided into two subgroups – those who were in quarantine and those who were not – and all completed the following questionnaires: internet-focused coping, loneliness, hope, and brief symptom inventory scales. Results revealed that individuals who were in quarantine reported higher levels of distress than did the comparison group. The mediation model demonstrated that being in quarantine was related to higher levels of internet-focused coping, and higher levels of psychological distress. The mediation of hope predicted decreased distress, whereas loneliness predicted increased distress. The results have important practical implications for people who have experienced staying in quarantine. Identifying their psychological resources may help to reduce their vulnerability to distress. Focused interventions with hope orientation may start positive activation of personal strengths that is crucial for growth and adjustment.

Psychological distress among Italians during the 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) quarantine

BackgroundQuarantine as a preventive action to reduce people’s exposure to a contagious disease has substantial psychological impact. We aimed to collect information on psychologically distressing experiences of Italians living in quarantine during the COVID-19 pandemic.MethodsFrom 6 to 20 April 2020 participants filled out an online questionnaire. Demographic and physical symptoms data from the prior 14 days of quarantine were collected. Psychological impact of quarantine was assessed by the COVID-19 Peritraumatic Distress Index (CPDI).ResultsIn all, 20,158 participants completed the online survey. Of these, 11,910 (59.1%) were from Lombardy, the region with 37.7% of positive cases identified during the survey period. 30.1% of responders were male. About half (55.9%) of responders were 18–50 years old, 54.3% had a tertiary level of education, 69.5% were workers, 84.1% were living in houses with ≥3 rooms, and 13.7% were living alone. 9.7% had had contact with COVID-19 positive people. Of all responders, 9978 (48.6%) reported a psychological impact, 8897 (43.4%) of whom reported mild or moderate and 1081 (5.2%) severe psychological impact. The multivariate analysis, after adjustments, showed that an increasing CPDI score was associated with gender (female), first-second educational level, being unemployed, living in a ≤2 room house, having had new health problems during the previous 14 days, and not having been out of the house in the previous week. Concerning the type of psychological distress, 2003 responders (9.9%) reported moderate to severe depressive symptoms, 1131 (5.5%) moderate to severe anxiety symptoms, and 802 (3.9%) moderate to severe physical symptoms. A positive correlation was found between responder rate (per 10.000 residents) and positive COVID-19 cases (per 10.000 residents) by region (rs = + 0.83, p = < 0.0001), and between responder rate and region latitude (rs = + 0.91, p = < 0.0001), with a greater response rate in the north. Considering Lombardy Region responders, a negative correlation between CPDI score and distance from place of residence to the red zone (Nembro-Alzano) was found. Higher prevalence of psychological distress was found up to 25 km away from the red zone and, in particular, severe distress up to 15 km.ConclusionsPolicy makers and mental health professionals should be aware of quarantine’s adverse mental health consequences. Factors influencing the success of quarantine and infection control practices for both disease containment and community recovery should be identified and additional support to vulnerable persons at increased risk of adverse psychological and social consequences of quarantine should be guaranteed.

Mental Health Impact of the Confinement Measures During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Background. Mid-March 2020, with exponentially increasing COVID-19 infections, Luxembourg closed schools and businesses, and declared a crisis (état de crise) to implement confinement measures, including orders to not leave the home unless to fulfill essential needs. The psychological consequences of these policy responses to the pandemic on older people, considered a high-risk group, were unknown at the time. The aim of this study was to use the nationally representative CON-VINCE study that assessed mental health at the height of the confinement measures mid-April 2020, to assess the psychological impact of quarantine on older adults. Method. A total of 451 participants aged 60+ years (55.0% male) filled in the CES-D, the GAD-7 and the 3-item loneliness scale that measured depressive symptoms, level of anxiety, and feelings of social isolation. Results. Mean age was 67.7 years (SD 5.5), average number of school years were 13.1 (SD 3.6). The participants were mainly of Luxembourgish nationality (87.8%), and a majority (69.8%) was married. Clinically relevant depression scores were present in 13.1%, generalized anxiety in 1.8%, and self-perceived isolation in 16.9% of participants. Number of depressive symptoms was associated with perceived isolation (p<0.001) and current exercise levels (p=0.02). Discussion. The rate of older adults with clinically relevant impaired mental health was similar to pre-pandemic levels in Luxembourg, suggesting that negative mental health consequences of the confinement measures were largely absent. Possible explanations are that confinement was considered a universal experience, and that the healthcare system remained functional, unlike in other countries at the time.

PSYCHOLOGICAL IMPACT OF QUARANTINE ON THE MEDICAL EDUCATION AND HOW TO REDUCE IT

Previously published data on experiences of the different quarantine measures or outbreaks in the public health system related to the SARS virus, Ebola virus, Influenza infections were analyzed in the article. The aim of the article was to identify, appraise and synthesize the best available evidences from the systematic reviews for the possible psychological impact of quarantine on the learning on health care in medical university in conditions of isolation during pandemic COVID-19 and to propose approaches to solve these problems. These findings were appraised in prism of the medical education and avaliable approaches to the e-learning of medical students. Self-experience of the Zaporizhzhia State Medical University was also included. On the background of the published results of the studies revealing the stressors some solutions for the identified problems were proposed relating to the data of the reviews. Particular attention is paid to the effect of the self e-learning on the result of the knowledge achievement. Among main stressful factors were indicated the following: fear of infection, frustrating, boredom, inability to take part in usual day-to-day activities, lack of contact with patients. Role of the teacher in reducing the burden of stress in students during quarantine was covered. Benefits and pitfalls of on-line education were assessed. The future unsolved problems were discussed.
