Bereaved UK military families: A mixed methods study on the provision of practical and emotional support

Traumatic deaths of military personnel can have tragic consequences for the lives and health of bereaved significant others. To mitigate the effects, the UK Armed Forces enhanced the support for bereaved military families. However, little is known about whether the support has been satisfactory. The present research applied mixed methods to explore the experiences of bereaved UK military families (N = 264) with different types of support and how it historically changed over time. The findings suggest that although support has improved, further improvements are required in the provision of financial information, administrative support, and access to psychological support for all bereaved family members.

Recognizing Intellectual Capital in the Intangible Asset Structure of Enterprises in the Integration Period

Value theory is one of the fundamental problems of economics which is applied in many different disciplines. However, the application of this economic theory in recognizing the valuation of intellectual capital of enterprises is a complex issue, especially knowledge is considered as an important form of resource and exchanged on the market. According to modern accounting theories, the accounting of intellectual capital is associated with the use of a measure of value to recognize, measure, and report on intangible assets of enterprises. However, current accounting practices do not meet the information demand of enterprise knowledge resources. This article focuses on clarifying the theoretical issues of knowledge resources in enterprises and the current state of accounting of intellectual resources in particular and intangible assets accounting in general in Vietnam in the integration period. Based on the research on content, requirements for managing knowledge resources and accounting methods, this article provides the guiding principles for the development of the accounting of intangible assets to exploit the enterprise's knowledge resources.

THE DEFINITION OF BUDGETARY AND AUTONOMOUS INSTITUTIONS FINANCIAL STABILITY

In this article the author researched the features of the current financial mechanism of the budget and autonomous organizations; the main distinctions in provision of financial information between them and the commercial organizations are shown. Determinations of financial stability are considered, the conclusion is drawn on their inapplicability to the researched forms of business. On the basis of the existing determinations and features of conducting financial and economic activities the author's concept of financial stability of budgetary and autonomous institutions which can be used in a financial analysis as a reflection of an economic essence of a separate aspect of activity of budgetary and autonomous institutions was created.

The Role of Accounting in the Municipal Performance: An Empirical Study in the Central Region of Portugal

This article examines the differences in the adoption and implementation of the reform of financial accounting in the Portuguese municipalities. This study is based on a questionnaire sent to the financial officers of the Portuguese municipalities of Central Region of Statistics of Portugal, who had previously adopted the double entry accounting based on Official Accounting Plan of Local Authorities (POCAL). The questionnaire was structured in the same way for the whole target population. This study will be possible to verify, based on the responses obtained, if local authorities do what they are legally defined to do in the provision of financial information on the allocation of resources as well as on the development of performance indicators, based on accounting data.

Financial Literacy and Credit Counselling a Demand-side Solution to Financial Inclusion (A Study of Initiatives by Select Scheduled Commercial Banks in India)

Financial literacy plays a vital role in the efficient allocation of household savings and the ability of individuals to meet their financial goals and goes beyond the provision of financial information and advice. Financial Literacy and credit counselling would help the underprivileged practice parsimony and induce them to save, access credit, use the funds, timely repayment of debt, to find a better livelihood, earn income and thus join the mainstream from exclusion. This paper attempts to discuss the financial literacy initiatives in the Indian Banking Industry. In this context the researcher has attempted to analyse the Initiatives and data pertaining to FLCCs of select SCBs. The study reviews theoretical aspects of Financial Literacy and credit counselling initiatives in general and for scheduled commercial banks in particular.

Disputes between majority and minority shareholders with regard to the provision of financial information to the minority raise issues regarding the rights of the minority and the duties of the majority. This article considers whether there are circumstances in which there may be a fiduciary relationship between the majority and minority shareholder such that equal access to financial information may be required.

The Triple Bottom Line Effect on Emerging Market Companies: A Test of Corporate Social Responsibility and Firm Value Relationship

Over the last twenty years, after corporations have historically focused their reporting systems on the provision of financial information needed by managers and shareholders to assess risks and calculate returns, the global awareness of the need to assess the full spectrum of corporate value has grown dramatically. The triple bottom line or total returns on capital—economic, social, or environmental—are now tracked with increasing regularity. Prior research has revealed that a significant pressure of economic changes, an increase in interest in corporate social responsibility (CSR) in recent years, and an acknowledgement of it as an important research topic has brought a bigger and wider effort to build a comprehensive framework. Little empirical research on the effect of corporate social responsibility together with profitability on firm value is done in Southeast Asian countries. This study extends the literature that has been done mostly in western societies by proposing a further linkage between social responsibility, profitability, and firm value, which is rarely investigated in non-western societies. The study analyzed 35 Indonesian manufacturing firms that are listed in Indonesian Stock Exchange (IDX) and report their CSR as the supplement in the annual report. Statistic methods used for testing the hypothesis are T-test and multivariate regression model. The empirical results reveal that CSR has significantly influenced the firm value of Indonesian manufacturing companies. However, one striking finding in this study is the insignificant influence of two measures of profitability, i.e. ROA and ROE, over firm value of those companies have good CSR. These results explicitly show how firms in emerging countries are going to be more concerned with social sustainability and long-run profitability.

Provision of financial information and its impact on the relationship between executives and venture capital managers: A study of the private equity market in Egypt

This study makes an attempt to further understand the practices of private equity/venture capital (PE/VC) in developing markets. We focus our attention on the relationship between PE/VC firms and the investee companies (ICs) and its development. We investigate the provision of financial and non-financial information and its effects on the development of the relationship between chief executive officers (CEOs) and PE/VC managers in Egypt as one of the developing markets. Data were collected from Egyptian PE/VC firms via semi-structured interviews. Both similarities and differences were found between Egyptian PE/VC in respect of developing the relationships with their ICs. Results show that the provision of timely information allows PE/VC managers to: (i) have a higher degree of trust on CEOs; (ii) be more supportive of the CEO's strategic decisions; and (iii) interact more frequently with the ICs. The origin of the PE/VC firms seems to have an effect on the Egyptian PE/VC firms’ behaviours. International PE/VC firms are also more likely to get involved in every decision at the strategic level of the ICs. The current study provides some implications for both CEOs of the ICs and PE/VC managers. It is important for PE/VC managers to develop and maintain successful relationships with ICs, which will promote a positive image of the PE/VC firms that can be used for marketing purposes, which in turn can be translated into more deals in the future.

Genetic algorithms supporting generative design of user interfaces: Examples

Designing User Interfaces (UIs) is considered a creative and human-intensive task, and this prevents from adopting computer-aided tools to explore alternative solutions. A number of decisions are to be taken, such as optimizing the displacement of UI items on the available screen space or selecting an adequate palette of colors. Therefore, the UI design process is iterative in nature, time consuming, and costly.Generative design, while keeping the centrality of human creativity, introduces a novel approach to assist humans in finding effective and esthetically convincing solutions. Meta-heuristics are a means to apply generative design in practice. We advocate the use of meta-heuristics to supporting different aspects of the UI design process. In this paper we discuss the application of genetic algorithms to solve two different problems: building hierarchical menu layouts and selecting color palettes based on a set of constraints. The paper discusses the results of two experimental applications developed in Poste Italiane, namely the money ordering by Automated Teller Machine (ATM) interfaces and the provision of financial information by kiosks.

UK small owner‐managed businesses: accounting and financial reporting needs

PurposeIn recent years there has been a growing interest in the provision of financial information by small business entities. In the UK, regulation has taken the form of the Financial Reporting Standard for Small Enterprises (FRSSE) and internationally UNCTAD has issued its own reporting guidelines for small enterprises ahead of the International Accounting Standards Board's (IASB's) standard on the subject. Despite this international interest, academic research investigating the accounting and financial reporting needs of small enterprises remains relatively scarce. This UK‐based study aims to assess the potential demand for and usefulness of reporting guidelines specifically designed for small owner‐managed enterprises (SoMEs).Design/methodology/approachUsing postal questionnaires, data were gathered from accountants providing services to SoMEs and the owners of such enterprises.FindingsIt was found that most SoMEs produce accounting records, often based on computerised packages. However, financial awareness varies significantly and there is evidence that most small enterprise owners rely on their accountants to prepare their financial statements and are often left bewildered by the complexity of the information provided. With UK and the future IASB standards being designed to meet the needs of the largest small and medium‐sized enterprises (SMEs), there does appear to be a relatively high level of agreement that specific guidance for much smaller entities would be desirable. However, many of the accountants felt that some aspects of existing regulations, such as the UNCTAD level 3 guidelines, were too complex, indicating that regulators need to carefully consider the contents of regulations for the smallest entities.Origniality/valueThe findings of this study have implications for regulators who are now considering the possibility of developing guidance for the smallest business entities.

Employee share ownership, privatization and internal financial reporting—some new evidence

In recent years there has been growing interest, both professional and academic, in the effects of employee financial participation at company level; whether via share ownership/profit-sharing schemes, or through the provision of financial information to employees. This paper provides some new empirical evidence on these issues, gleaned from questionnaire returns from leading U.K. companies—including a sub-sample of privatized firms. The paper, inter alia , provides evidence on the perceived impact of employee sharing schemes, as well as information on the internal employee reporting practices of firms with/without such schemes. The novel evidence emanating from the study may be of particular import to management accountants, who might be expected to become increasingly involved in these areas of activity.

The Impact of Search Costs and Asymmetric Information on Current Value Accounting

Abstract This paper examines the impact that search costs and asymmetric information would have on financial statements if either of the two main systems of current value accounting were introduced. The significance of search costs is that, although the models which determine the optimal amount of search are becoming more general, they are based on very restrictive assumptions and are of limited practical application. In relation to the second issue, where asset markets are dominated by asymmetric information, the ‘signal’ conveyed by the accounts would be misleading. It is argued that, whilst these two issues can more easily be resolved where the provision of financial information is unregulated, they are likely to be important considerations in the political process which results in an accounting standard.

The relationship between accounting and personnel management — past conflicts and future potential

There is no doubt that personnel management and accounting have traditionally been viewed as separate functional areas of management with only slender and rather tenuous connections. The concerns of the personnel manager have been seen as related to crucial, but limited, aspects of the behaviour and management of people at work, whilst the accountant's role in the provision of financial information has been seen as an impersonal concern, abstracting from rather than enriching the human environment of an enterprise. Moreover, even where the two functions are clearly interrelated, the relationship has all too often been seen in terms of differing orientations and conflicts, rather than a co‐operative concern with the interests of the enterprise as a whole, as is often and so clearly demonstrated by their joint involvement in the setting of performance standards and the subsequent reaction to the reporting of actual results.
