Optimization of Realistic Accelerated Stress Tests for PEM Fuel Cells Using Standardized Automotive Driving Cycles

Proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells have so far not achieved the targeted lifetime necessary to be an economical alternative for automotive applications. This is mainly caused by their high degradation rates. To better understand the degradation mechanisms, the use of accelerated stress tests (ASTs) at the component level is widespread. However, it is still a challenge to transfer their results to real-world applications.To address this problem, the approach of this work is to derive load profiles from standardized driving cycles for passenger cars. In combination with a fuel cell system model that is used to define the operating conditions of the media, such as temperature or pressure, a test procedure is obtained that results in a realistic degradation of the fuel cell. The proposed test procedure exposes the PEM fuel cell (PEMFC) to the most important degradation conditions in mobile applications. Dynamic operation is responsible for deterioration processes within the PEMFC and is the underlying cause of typical hygrothermal and voltage cycling events. Such cycling also occurs during start-stop operations, causing severe damage to the PEMFC catalysts. In addition, idling conditions may prompt open-circuit voltage (OCV) conditions in the PEMFC, resulting in dissolution of the Pt catalyst and subsequent chemical degradation of the PEM. Additionally, high load operation may also lead to catalyst degradation. Finally, the inertia of the auxiliary components, such as the humidifier, during load changes causes not ideal conditions, such as relative humidity changes, resulting in further mechanical stress on the membrane.Due to the targeted PEMFC lifetime of up to 8,000 hours for automotive applications [1], realistic degradation test procedures have a very long test duration, making them particularly challenging and costly to conduct. To overcome this hurdle, the load profile of the proposed test procedure is shortened by using an in-house developed optimization algorithm. For this purpose, four operation modes are defined as degradation-accelerating: voltage cycling, relative humidity (RH) cycling, OCV/idling, and high load operation. Based on state-of-the-art AST procedures, a sub-algorithm is developed for each operating mode. Such sub-algorithms are capable of identifying all occurrences within a given test procedure that may lead to accelerated fuel cell degradation. For each sub-algorithm, the degradation parameters (namely upper and lower potential limits for voltage cycling, membrane tensile stress for RH cycling, fluoride emission rate for OCV/idling, and voltage degradation rate for high load) are specified by the user. This allows the comparison of different fuel cells in terms of their resistance to conventional degradation mechanisms.The developed algorithm can be used to optimize various driving cycles such as the worldwide harmonized light vehicles test cycle (WLTC) for various mobile applications. All cycle events identified as accelerating degradation are connected with a point connector function based on the fuel cell polarization curve. This ensures moderate voltage steps between the identified phases and thus prevents the algorithm from inducing further degradation of the fuel cell.The optimization algorithm obtained can reduce the test duration by up to 40%. The method can be repeated frequently during AST operation by repeatedly measuring the polarization curve to consider the continuous degradation in the test procedure. Decreasing fuel cell performance leads to more severe voltage drops during load changes and thus an increase of degradation-accelerating phases over the test period. Furthermore, start-stop ASTs developed by Bisello et al. [2] are also included due to their strong contribution to fuel cell degradation in automotive applications.Finally, the optimized cycles are analyzed using two simulation tools to evaluate the degradation. The first tool by Ao et al. [3] uses the electrochemical surface area (ECSA) to quantify the proceeding degradation during cycle operation. A characteristic voltage and the voltage change rate are extracted from the driving cycle. For both values, the resulting decrease in ECSA is modeled and aging is defined as the ECSA loss rate. The second tool by Pei et al. [4] examines the driving cycle according to the four degradation-inducing conditions and combines them with experimentally determined degradation rates. Both tools allow an analysis of the degradation derivative between the initial and optimized test procedures. By adjusting the degradation rate for the different degradation mechanisms, the AST procedure is improved in terms of its representativeness for real-world applications.

Temperature Dependent Operando High Energy Surface X-Ray Diffraction Studies of Pt(111) Oxidation

Platinum electrocatalysts are still widely used as cathode material in proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) because of their high ORR activity. However, their long-term stability is limited due to degradation processes. This degradation is partly caused by Pt oxidation and oxide reduction, which lead to irreversible surface restructuring and subsequently Pt dissolution. To increase the lifetime of PEMFCs it is mandatory to understand the mechanisms behind the degradation on an atomistic level. This requires studies by structure sensitive in situ methods, in particular, also studies at the elevated temperatures typically employed in PEMFCs operation.Previous studies revealed that in the initial stage of oxide formation Pt atoms are extracted out of the surface and form an ultra-thin oxide layer directly above the surface. This extraction is long known as place exchange [1], but the atomic-scale details of the surface oxide structure, the extraction mechanism, and especially the kinetics of the initial oxide growth were only recently clarified [2-7]. It was found that the structural arrangement of the Pt atoms within the surface oxide on the Pt(111) and the Pt(100) surface is distinctly different, leading to differences in the oxidation/reduction kinetics, the reversibility of the surface oxidation/reduction process, and the amount of Pt dissolution into the electrolyte.Recently, we performed fast operando high-energy surface X-ray diffraction (HESXRD) studies, in which we investigated the initial extraction of Pt atoms on Pt(111) during potential cycles. Surprisingly, it was found that the Pt extraction during the anodic sweep is largely independent of the potential sweep rate, although the peak cyclic voltammograms (CVs) associated with the charge transfer during surface oxidation showed a pronounced shift [7-9]. This suggests that the Pt extraction is a fast process, rather driven by potential and not directly coupled to the slow formation of surface oxygen species. However, the Pt extraction during the anodic sweep and the re-insertion during the cathodic sweep still exhibit significant hysteresis, indicating a complex multistep oxidation kinetics.Previous electrochemical studies of Pt(111) electrodes revealed that the described influence of oxidation/reduction kinetics and the reversibility of the charge transfer processes increase at elevated temperature [10]. However, the temperature dependence of the Pt extraction behavior is currently unknown, because all previous structural studies of oxide growth and reduction have been performed exclusively at room temperature.For the experiments at elevated temperatures we developed a new setup for HESXRD studies of single crystals, which combines a hanging meniscus electrochemical cell for operando X-ray diffraction measurements with an inductive heating device in a joint Ar-filled compartment. This setup allows direct (re-)preparation of the aligned Pt single crystals on the diffractometer. By this, the time between preparation and measurement is reduced down to a few minutes and sample transfer through air is rigorously avoided.Temperature-dependent HESXRD measurements at temperatures up to 343 K were performed at beamline ID31 of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility. Anode Defects’ Propagation in Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells Stack

Reliability and durability are key considerations to successfully deploy Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFCs). Defects induced by manufacturing processes and fuel cell operating conditions may shorten the lifetime of PEMFC due to membrane electrode assembly (MEA) components degradations. If the degradation mechanisms occurring along ageing are now well-known, the propagation of these defects to other materials or to other locations in the stack was poorly investigated in the literature. Recently, we investigated a defect-propagation in MEA via accelerated stress tests combining load and load-driven humidity cycling, and open-circuit voltage. Results highlighted a defect propagation in term of anode and cathode ECSA losses. Significant membrane thinning is also observed for the defective segments. If, the defect propagation was investigated at the cell scale, it has been barely studied in the literature at the stack level.The objective of this work is to quantify the impact of MEA manufacturing defects on the performance and durability in stack and to analyze how these defects can propagate within healthy areas of the same MEA or to healthies MEAs within a stack.Tests were carried out on two stacks with metallic bipolar plates. The stacks were assembled using 35 defect-free MEAs for the healthy stack and using 30 homogeneous MEAs and 5 MEAs with controlled anode defects over 25% of the active area (absence of anode catalyst layer) for the faulty one. The two stacks were operated on a test bench able to control operating conditions and electrochemical characterizations were regularly made in order to evaluate the impact of the defects on the stack behavior.The initial characterization of the stack contained faulty MEAs showed, as expected, that the defects in the anode active layers have a significant effect on the performance of the cells from the conditioning stage. The analysis of the degradation rate showed that the cells directly in contact with the defected MEAs were the ones whose performance degraded the fastest, which implies that the presence of defects within the stack induces a propagation of the performance decrease. This phenomenon could be linked to a significant increase in hydrogen leakage through the membrane identified both by off-line electrochemical characterization and by thermal camera measurements in post-mortem analysis. The mechanism of degradation is still difficult to understand but the presence of defects within the stack could lead to constriction of the current lines around the defect and to localized heating which could degrade the membrane relatively rapidly. Use of Boron Doped Diamond Corrosion Free Supports to Evaluate Fuel Cell Electrocatalyst Stability Under Accelerated Stress Testing

Proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) electrocatalysts are typically Pt or Pt alloy nanoparticles (NPs) supported on high surface area carbon black powders, the latter which contain a significant sp2 carbon component. One of the barriers to PEMFC commercialisation is the lifetime of the catalyst-support system, which should be at least 5,000 hours for automotive applications.[1] During the start-up and shut-down of the PEMFC, the cathode is subjected to significant oxidative potentials (greater than 1 V vs RHE) which can lead to corrosion of the predominantly sp2 bonded carbon support, a key factor which can limit the lifetime of PEMFCs. [2] High quality boron doped diamond (BDD) is an sp3 bonded network with above 1:1000 B:C ratio, which is required for metal-like electronic conductivity. BDD has many favourable properties for electrochemical experiments, most notably: higher electrochemical corrosion resistance with respect to sp2 carbons, low background currents, and a wide aqueous solvent window.[3] In this work we first explore the electrochemical corrosion stability of BDD when undergoing electrochemical cycling in acid solutions. To achieve this BDD substrates (BDD TEM grid) suitable for both electrochemical experiments and high magnification (single atom resolution) transmission electron microscopy (TEM) experiments were produced using precision ion polishing (Gatan PIPS-II). The surface was characterised using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to ensure the polishing process did not significantly alter the diamond substrate. Under aggressive electrochemical potential cycling in perchloric acid and sulfuric acid solutions, both TEM morphological analysis and Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy (EELS) thickness measurements showed no evidence of BDD corrosion. [4] The BDD-TEM substrate was then used as a platform for investigating the degradation of a PEMFC electrocatalyst (Pt NPs) under accelerated stress testing (AST) [1] conditions on an atomic level, using the corrosion free carbon support. This enables the influence of other degradation pathways [2] (such as aggregation, Ostwald Ripening & direct dissolution) to be explored in more detail, free from issues associated with corrosion of the support. Pt NPs, in the size range 1 – 4 nm, were sputter coated onto the BDD TEM grid. Identical location ex-situ TEM (IL-TEM)[5] in combination with image analysis was used to probe NP changes e.g. size, shape, position, on an individual basis before, and after, AST (Fig. 1, which contains c.a. 200 NPs for analysis). Such measurements were complemented by Inductively Coupled Plasma – Optical Emission Spectroscopy analysis for any dissolved Pt, and electrochemical cyclic voltammetry measurements of the Pt to highlight changes in electrocatalytic behaviour (hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen reduction reaction) due to AST cycling.Figure 1 – High magnification annular dark field (ADF) identical location images of Pt NPs, a) Pt/BDD before AST, b) Pt NPs after AST, c) Cyclic voltammogram of the 1000 cycle AST from 0.8 to 1.4 V vs Ag|AgCl (1.6 to 1.6 V vs RHE).

Self-Water-Removal and Voltage Behavior Improvement of Dead-Ended Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell Stack at Steady-State and Dynamic Conditions

The proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) demonstrates high commercial competitiveness due to its advantages: low operating temperature, high power/mass ratio, fast response, no emission, and low noise. Thermal and water management remains a challenging issue for ensuring the fuel cell’s performance at steady-state and dynamic conditions. The cathode moisture condensation uses a semiconductor cooler to effectively remove excess water from the PEMFCs and reduce the probability of flooding of the stack. The stack’s voltage uniformity is an essential factor that affects the performance and lifetime of PEMFC. This paper investigates the dynamic response characteristics of the voltage uniformity of a PEMFC stack under cathode moisture condensation conditions. The results show that the condensation temperature at 10°C during the steady-state or transient operation of the PEMFC can effectively optimize the stack’s performance. Compared to conventional PEMFC, applying the cathode moisture condensation technology to the PEMFC stack increases the stack voltage by 6% and decreases the voltage uniformity by up to 30%. This self-water-removal technology effectively improves the voltage uniformity of the stack, which then increase the stack durability.

Liquid water transport and mechanical performance of electrospun gas diffusion layers

ABSTRACT Self-humidification is becoming a popular strategy for water management in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), owing to the advantages of decreased volume, cost, and parasitic power of the hydrogen fuel cell engine. Membrane dehydration is one of the key issues that seriously affect the performance and lifespan of PEMFCs under low humidity conditions. In this work, an electrospinning approach was employed to fabricate gas diffusion layers (e-GDLs) composed of nanosized carbon fibers with a nanoscale pore structure. Further, a vapor deposition of Dow Corning Sylgard 184 was utilized to apply a hydrophobic coating to enhance the hydrophobicity of the e-GDL. The fabricated e-GDL can help alleviate the dehydration of the catalyst-coated membrane by increasing the breakthrough pressure. The breakthrough pressure of the e-GDL is five folds higher than that of the current commercial GDL, owing to the combined effects of the nanostructure and enhanced hydrophobicity. This superior characteristic is expected to effectively alleviate membrane dehydration under low humidity conditions. In addition, the e-GDL has excellent elastic deformability, which can effectively alleviate the irreversible damage caused by the pre-tightening force in the stack assembly process, thus enhancing the durability and lifetime of PEMFCs.

Effects of operating temperature on the carbon corrosion in a proton exchange membrane fuel cell under high current density

• Temperature has the opposite effect on the carbon corrosion kinetic mechanism and water flooding. • Temperature and flooding were the main reasons for carbon corrosion in the upper and bottom areas. • Water management was very important at the outlet of PEMFC operated at high current density. Carbon corrosion in catalysts is one of the main limitations of proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) lifetime. Water flooding can accelerate the carbon corrosion rate in PEMFCs, especially at high current densities. Increasing the operation temperature can effectively mitigate water flooding and improve the water management performance of PEMFCs. However, elevated temperatures also increase the carbon corrosion reaction kinetics, accelerating the degradation of PEMFCs lifetime. To study the effects of temperature on carbon corrosion at high current densities, PEMFCs operating for 100 h at 65 °C and 90 °C under 1600 mA·cm −2 were investigated. The results showed that the electrochemical active surface area (ECSA) of the cathode catalyst layer decreased by 9.16% and 13.92% at 65 °C and 90 °C, respectively. The reduction rate of the catalyst layer in the nonflooding area increased as the operating temperature increased. However, the reduction rate decreased by 69.82% and 54.04% at 65 °C and 90 °C, respectively, at the outlet of the PEMFC. Therefore, water flooding is the key issue causing lifetime degradation, and water management is essential for PEMFCs that operate at high current densities, especially at the outlet of PEMFCs.

The Impact of Chemical-Mechanical Ex Situ Aging on PFSA Membranes for Fuel Cells.

A proton-exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) constitutes today one of the preferred technologies to promote hydrogen-based alternative energies. However, the large-scale deployment of PEMFCs is still hampered by insufficient durability and reliability. In particular, the degradation of the polyelectrolyte membrane, caused by harsh mechanical and chemical stresses experienced during fuel cell operation, has been identified as one of the main factors restricting the PEMFC lifetime. An innovative chemical-mechanical ex situ aging device was developed to simultaneously expose the membrane to mechanical fatigue and an oxidizing environment (i.e., free radicals) in order to reproduce conditions close to those encountered in fuel cell systems. A cyclic compressive stress of 5 or 10 MPa was applied during several hours while a degrading solution (H2O2 or a Fenton solution) was circulated in contact with the membrane. The results demonstrated that both composite Nafion™ XL and non-reinforced Nafion™ NR211 membranes are significantly degraded by the conjoint mechanical and chemical stress exposure. The fluoride emission rate (FER) was generally slightly lower with XL than with NR211, which could be attributed to the degradation mitigation strategies developed for composite XL, except when the pressure level or the aging duration were increased, suggesting a limitation of the improved durability of XL.

Analysis and outlook of mass transport in ultralow Pt loading proton exchange membrane fuel cells

<p indent=0mm>Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) for automotive propulsions have been regarded as an ideal and the most promising alternative to replace fossil-fuel based internal combustion engines due to the high performance, high energy efficiency and zero-emission. However, the high cost has severely impeded the commercialization of PEMFCs, especially the high cost of Pt-based precious metal catalyst used for the cathode oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). It is critical to reducing the amount of Pt and thus decreasing the cost of fuel cell stacks, which would lead to numbers of new challenges. On the one hand, the reduction of Pt load could increase the oxygen transport resistance in cathode catalyst layers (CCLs). In fact, the oxygen transport resistance could be divided into several constituent parts, i.e., oxygen transport resistances in CCLs, gas diffusion layers (GDLs) and the flow channels, where the transport resistance in CCLs is much higher than other resistances. Further, CCLs are constructed as heterogeneous composites of ORR electrocatalysts, conductive polymer such as perfluorinated sulfonic acid (PFSA) ionomer as well as the pore space determined. Hence, the oxygen transport resistance in CCLs includes the bulk transport resistance caused by oxygen diffusion in the nanopore and the local transport resistance caused by oxygen permeation through the ultrathin ionomer film covering on the Pt surface. Local oxygen transport behavior could be divided into three processes: (1) Oxygen adsorption from gas phase into ionomer, (2) oxygen diffusion inside the ionomer, and (3) oxygen adsorption from the ionomer to Pt surfaces. As the Pt loading decreases, local oxygen transport resistance would increase significantly, thus leading to a dramatical performance degradation at high current density of fuel cells. In specific, the oxygen adsorption at gas/ionomer interface used to be considered as Henry’s adsorption. However, it is proved recently that this type of adsorption should be quasi-logarithmic, due to the finiteness of the adsorption site on ionomer surface. In addition, the bulk oxygen transport resistance depends on the porosity and pore size distribution inside the electrodes. We summarized plenty of experimental results of effective oxygen diffusivities reported by different research groups, and found that all the experimental values are obviously smaller than the calculated results based on the classical Bruggeman approximation. It is believed that the effective porosity plays a more important role relative to the geometrical porosity in the estimation of bulk oxygen transport resistance in PEMFCs. On the other hand, confining effect of the ultrathin ionomer film could weaken the separation of hydrophilic and hydrophobic phases and then cut down the pathway of proton migration. There are two proton conduction mechanisms in CCLs: Grotthuss hopping and vehicular mechanism. The proton conduction in CCLs could be affected by numerous factors, such as temperature, ionomer structure, thickness of ionomer film, as well as cation contaminants in the ionomer film. Both high oxygen transport resistance and low proton conduction in ultra-low Pt membrane electrode assemblies would damage the performance and the lifetime of PEMFCs. In this review, the bulk and local transport behavior, proton transport in CCLs, as well as the corresponding influence on fuel cell performance are systematically analyzed, and a series of coping strategies are presented.

Design and simulation of current-fed dual-active full-bridge DC/DC converter control system applied to proton exchange membrane fuel cell

Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) have been increasingly applied in clean and efficient distributed power generation systems in recent years. However, the output characteristics of PEMFC are relatively soft due to the influence of multiple polarization overvoltage. With the increasement of current density, the output voltage shows to be a nonlinear downward trend. In addition, in order to ensure the lifetime of PEMFC, the output ripple current is often concerned. Considering above characteristics, in order to achieve efficient power transmission of the PEMFC system, this paper adopts the current-fed dual-active full-bridge (DAB) DC/DC converter topology, which can achieve soft switching of most switches. Furthermore, it can restrain the characteristics of the current ripple. Hence, the power transmission efficiency and current ripple requirements of PEMFC are fulfilled. Finally the current-fed DAB is designed and simulated through PSIM. The C-block is applied to simulate the PEMFC nonlinear power supply according to the actual PEMFC parameters. In order to achieve efficient constant power transmission of the nonlinear PEMFC, a novel power closed-loop control strategy is proposed.

Long-Term Performance Prediction of PEMFC Based on LASSO-ESN

In recent years, with wide application of proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) in vehicles and portable applications, researches regarding PEMFC lifetime behavior and associated prognostic techniques receive more interest. In this article, a least absolute shrinkage and selection operator-echo state network (LASSO-ESN)-based prognostic strategy is proposed for the optimization of input parameters and long-term PEMFC behavior prediction. In the analysis, ESN is selected to predict PEMFC long-term behavior iteratively, while input parameters to ESN are optimized using LASSO. With LASSO, the contribution of input parameters to PEMFC prediction can be evaluated, and those with the minimum weight are eliminated iteratively during the prediction. From the findings, the most accurate predictions and corresponding optimized input parameters can be determined. Furthermore, effectiveness of proposed strategy is investigated using PEMFC data at different operating conditions. Results demonstrate that with proposed strategy, optimized input parameters at different operating conditions can be determined, and accurate PEMFC predictions can be provided.

Online Prediction of Vehicular Fuel Cell Residual Lifetime Based on Adaptive Extended Kalman Filter

The limited lifetime of proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) inhibits the further development of the fuel cell industry. Prediction is one of the most effective means for managing the lifetime of a fuel cell because it can assist in the implementation of mitigation actions before a vehicular fuel cell fails by estimating the residual lifetime. Therefore, this study aimed to develop a PEMFC lifetime prediction method for online applications. This paper presents the online prediction method developed for the residual lifetime of a vehicular fuel cell, which utilises data processing with an adaptive extended Kalman filter and a prediction formula. The formula considers different operating conditions and the external environment, which is in accord with the actual operating conditions of fuel cell vehicles. This method realises the online prediction of the residual lifetime of a vehicular fuel cell by updating weight coefficients for the operating conditions and environmental factors. This prediction method was validated and analysed using a simulation. The influences of key parameters on the stability and prediction accuracy of the algorithm were evaluated. The prediction method proposed in this paper can provide a reference for studies on fuel cell lifetime prediction.

Fuel Cell Automotive Drive-Cycle Cathode Catalyst (Pt/C) Layer Durability: Dependence on Low Vs. High Carbon Supports and Ionomer-to-Carbon-Ratio

The typical urban automotive drive-cycle for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) consists of frequent idle-to-peak power cathode voltage transients, with extremes ranging from 1.2 V to 0.6 V, respectively. Understanding the platinum electrochemical surface area (ECSA) loss mechanisms dependence on material and operational conditions have been extensively investigated with the objective of minimizing performance losses over the lifetime of PEMFC powered automobiles. Commonly, automotive accelerated stress tests (AST) are performed ex-situ on thin catalyst films. The standard catalyst consists of carbon supported platinum nanoparticles (Pt/C). This study compares triangle waveform (TW) ASTs monitoring ECSA loss for ex-situ (thin film in 0.1 HClO4) and in-situ (catalyst layers bond with ionomeric electrolyte in a complete membrane electrode assembly (MEA)). The ionomer-to-carbon ratios (I/C) of the MEAs is varied from 0.6 to 1.5 on either low surface area carbon (LSAC) or high surface area carbon (HSAC) supports. The AST profiles included 25k cycles at 10 sec intervals, between the upper potential limit of either 0.9 V or 1.2 V and the lower potential limit of 0.6V, with intermediate ECSA evaluations from the H-desorption current (0.02 V → 0.4 V).The electrolyte environment alters, liquid vs. ionomer, the dominant AST decay mechanism, Figure 1A. The decay in the liquid electrolyte is most sever upon initiation of the AST and the rate of decay decrease after the first 2000 cycles. While the MEA decay is less initial, but maintains the same rate of initial decay over 5000 cycles resulting in a higher overall loss of ECSA. ECSA decay is exacerbated at temperatures of 70°C. Increasing the I/C increases the interfacial acidity at the surface of the Pt/C and results in exacerbated ECSA loss, Figure 1B. Lifetime prediction for proton exchange membrane fuel cell under real driving cycles based on platinum particle dissolve model

Despite the great progress of proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) vehicle, the durability and cost of PEMFC still remain challenges. In this paper, a lifetime prediction model of PEMFC is developed by considering the platinum (Pt) electrochemical surface area (ECSA) degradation caused by steady power and transient power. The direct and continuous relationship between lifetime and real driving cycles is built by the proposed model. Firstly, the steady ECSA degradation model is deduced, and both the chemical and electrochemical dissolution of Pt particles are considered in the catalyst layer. The ECSA loss rate for steady power condition can be calculated by this model. Secondly, transient ECSA loss formula is obtained by fitting experimental data of PEMFC. This transient ECSA loss formula is used to calculate the ECSA loss rate under power changes condition. Thirdly, by applying the power voltage relationship, for a given power, the voltage can be calculated and applied to the two ECSA degradation models. Finally, the lifetime prediction method of PEMFC is proposed, and it is verified by PEMFC under three different driving cycles. Experimental test results show that the proposed lifetime prediction model accurately predict the lifetime of PEMFC under different driving cycles. The proposed method in this paper is more accurate compared with the method which divides the degradation into 4 conditions.

Structural characteristics, diffusion mechanism and mechanical behaviour of cathode catalyst layer

The cathode catalyst layer (CL) is an important part of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), and its performance directly determines the durability and lifetime of PEMFCs, therefore it is necessary and significant to understand its basic properties. In this study, the structural characteristics, diffusion mechanism, and mechanical behaviour of the CL are studied by molecular dynamics. The interaction between Pt and graphene, Pt and oxygen, and sulfonic groups and hydronium ions increases when the water content rises, however, oxygen has little effect on the interaction between particles. Increasing oxygen content can improve the uniformity of self-distribution. The diffusion of oxygen occurs at the interface of different phases and in the water region, the former takes precedence. The change of diffusion mode from interphase form to solution form will cause the change of diffusion coefficient. Compared with water, oxygen has a little effect on the mechanical properties of CL. During stretching deformation, holes are formed initially in the hydrophilic region, causing the structure to be broken with large deformation, and Pt/graphene particles are always encapsulated by ionomers. In addition, the corresponding properties of anode CL, including hydrogen and water effects, has been discussed and compared with those of cathode CL. This work provides theoretical understanding and prediction of the microstructure and physical properties of CL, the results are helpful for designing and optimizing its structure.

Comprehensive influences measurement and analysis of power converter low frequency current ripple on PEM fuel cell

To deeply understand the influences of power converter's low frequency current ripple (LFCR) and harmonics on a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) in its power conditioning system (PCS), a comprehensive measurement and analysis of the influences of LFCR and harmonics on PEMFC's performance and durability is investigated in this paper. Based on an equivalent circuit model of PEMFC stack and a mechanism model for evaluating the LFCR effects on the PEMFC, this paper studies primarily and systematically the comprehensive influences of LFCR and harmonics on PEMFC performances and durability, such as (1) degrading the PEMFC performance, (2) shortening the lifetime of PEMFC, (3) reducing the stack output power, (4) lowing its availability efficiency, (5) producing more heat and raising the PEMFC temperature, (6) consuming more fuel, and (7) decreasing the fuel utilization. Finally, a Horizon 300 W PEMFC stack is implemented and tested.

Energy and exergy analyze of PEM fuel cell: A case study of modeling and simulations

This study presents the performance of a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell in terms of its pressure and voltage parameters. The aim of this study is to improve the performance, efficiency and development of modeling and simulations of PEM fuel cells by experimental optimization. PEM fuel cell performance was researched using an open cathodic plate fuel cell, the effect of fuel cell's performance. PEM fuel cell efficiency was measured in terms of operating pressure and voltage parameters. The energy and exergy efficiencies of the PEM fuel cell were found to be 47.6% and 50.4%, herein. In this study, these results indicate that waste water of experimental work comprehends importance of the PEM fuel cell life-time.

Artificial Neural Network Modeling of Pt/C Cathode Degradation in PEM Fuel Cells

Use of computational modeling with a few experiments is considered useful to obtain the best possible result for a final product, without performing expensive and time-consuming experiments. Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) can produce clean electricity, but still require further study. An oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) takes place at the cathode, and carbon-supported platinum (Pt/C) is commonly used as an electrocatalyst. The harsh conditions during PEMFC operation result in Pt/C degradation. Observation of changes in the Pt/C layer under operating conditions provides a tool to study the lifetime of PEMFCs and overcome durability issues. Recently, artificial neural networks (ANNs) have been used to solve, predict, and optimize a wide range of scientific problems. In this study, several rates of change at the cathode were modeled using ANNs. The backpropagation (BP) algorithm was used to train the network, and experimental data were employed for network training and testing. Two different models are constructed in the present study. First, the potential cycles, temperature, and humidity are used as inputs to predict the resulting Pt dissolution rate of the Pt/C at the cathode as the output parameter of the network. Thereafter, the Pt dissolution rate and Pt ion diffusivity are regarded as inputs to obtain values of the Pt particle radius change rate, Pt mass loss rate, and surface area loss rate as outputs. The networks are finely tuned, and the modeling results agree well with experimental data. The modeled responses of the ANNs are acceptable for this application.

FPGA based fault-tolerant control on an interleaved DC/DC boost converter for fuel cell electric vehicle applications

In recent years, the effects of high-frequency current ripple coming from DC/DC converters on Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) have gained a growing interest from the international scientific community. Currently, the durability is one of the major technical challenges to PEMFC commercialization. Basing on the existing literature, the high-frequency current ripple leads up to long-term degradations on PEMFC, particularly on its lifetime. Accordingly, in order to enhance the PEMFC lifetime, new DC/DC converter topologies have been developed, such as Interleaved DC/DC Boost Converter (IBC). Despite this topology can minimize drastically the current ripple, the loss of one leg in case of power switch fault leads up to the drastic increasing of the current ripple and consequently long-term degradations on the PEMFC. In order to cope with this issue, solutions have to be developed. Within the framework of this research work, an efficient Fault-Tolerant Control (FTC) implemented on an FPGA board has been developed to solve this issue. The latter consists in changing the PWM gate control signal according to the faulty leg given by a fault detection algorithm. The obtained experimental results between a PEMFC and an IBC topology allows demonstrating the ability of the FTC to reduce drastically the current ripple in case of power switch faults.

Lifetime prediction and the economic lifetime of Proton Exchange Membrane fuel cells

Lifetime and cost are two main factors that restrict the commercialization of Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cells. This paper mainly studies the prediction and the evaluation methods of PEM fuel cell lifetime. A formula to predict the PEM fuel cell lifetime is presented. The formula is based on the vehicular operation records and the tested results in the lab. Also the difference between the vehicular operation condition and the test is taken into consideration. The formula realizes the PEM fuel cell lifetime rapid prediction. A PEM fuel cell residual life evaluation method is also presented. The evaluation method realizes online forecasting of the residual life through updating the environmental affecting factor and voltage degradation rate caused by the operating conditions. Furthermore, the PEM fuel cell economic lifetime is studied. The economic lifetime is the working lifetime which gains the lowest average cost. The synthesis of the lifetime and the cost provides a basis to confirm the best design lifetime.
