Non-perturbative effects for dark sectors with QCD portals

In this work, we consider a class of dark matter (DM) models where the DM does not directly interact with the Standard Model (SM) particles at the tree-level. Therefore, the coannihilation mechanism is crucial in achieving the correct DM relic abundance, which in turn requires the coannihilating partner to be close in mass to the actual DM particle. In our systematisation of the models’ class, the mediator and the coannihilation partner are assumed to be charged under QCD interactions. This last feature calls for a scrutiny of non-perturbative effects, namely Sommerfeld factors and bound-state formation, on the annihilations of the colored partner. Such non-perturbative effects are illustrated with an example model comprising a scalar leptoquark mediator, a Dirac vector-like fermion coannihilation partner, and a singlet DM fermion. Phenomenological features of this model, namely DM direct and indirect detection prospects, collider implications, and impact on the muon anomalous magnetic moment, are discussed.

Exponential enhancement of dark matter freezeout abundance

A novel paradigm for thermal dark matter (DM), termed “bouncing dark matter”, is presented. In canonical thermal DM scenarios, the DM abundance falls exponentially as the temperature drops below the mass of DM, until thermal freezeout occurs. This note explores a broader class of thermal DM models that are exceptions to this rule, where the DM abundance can deviate from the exponentially falling curve, and even rise exponentially, while in thermal equilibrium. Such scenarios can feature present day DM annihilation cross sections much larger than the canonical thermal target, improving the prospects for indirect detection of DM annihilation signals.

Resurrecting the fraternal twin WIMP miracle

In twin Higgs models that contain the minimal particle content required to address the little hierarchy problem (i.e., fraternal models), the twin tau has been identified as a promising candidate for dark matter. In this class of scenarios, however, the elastic scattering cross section of the twin tau with nuclei exceeds the bounds from XENON1T and other recent direct detection experiments. In this paper, we propose a modification to the fraternal twin Higgs scenario that we call ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}\mathrm{FTH}$, incorporating visible and twin hypercharged scalars (with $Y=2$) which break twin electromagnetism. This leads to new mass terms for the twin tau that are unrelated to its Yukawa coupling, as well as additional annihilation channels via the massive twin photon. We show that these features make it possible for the right-handed twin tau to freeze out with an acceptable thermal relic abundance while scattering with nuclei at a rate that is well below existing constraints. Nonetheless, large portions of the currently viable parameter space in this model are within the reach of planned direct detection experiments. The prospects for indirect detection using gamma rays and cosmic-ray antiprotons are also promising in this model. Furthermore, if the twin neutrino is light, the predicted deviation of $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}{N}_{\mathrm{eff}}\ensuremath{\approx}0.1$ would be within reach of Stage 4 cosmic microwave background experiments. Finally, the high luminosity LHC should be able to probe the entire parameter space of the ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}\mathrm{FTH}$ model through charged scalar searches. We also discuss how searches for long-lived particles are starting to constrain fraternal twin Higgs models.

Race to find split Higgsino dark matter

Split higgsinos are a compelling class of models to explain dark matter and may be on the verge of detection by multiple current experimental avenues. The idea is based on a large split in scales between the electroweak scale and decoupled scalars, with relatively light higgsinos between the two. Such models enjoy the merit of depending on very few parameters while still explaining gauge coupling unification, dark matter, and most of the hierarchy between the Planck and electroweak scales, and they remain undetected by past experiments. We analyze split higgsinos in view of current and next generation experiments. We discuss the direct and indirect detection prospects and further demonstrate promising discovery potentials in the upcoming electron electric dipole moment experiments. The parameter space of this model is analyzed in terms of experiments expected to run in the coming years and where we should be looking for the next potential discoveries.

Stellar basins of gravitationally bound particles

A new physical phenomenon is identified: volumetric stellar emission into gravitationally bound orbits of weakly coupled particles such as axions, moduli, hidden photons, and neutrinos. While only a tiny fraction of the instantaneous luminosity of a star (the vast majority of the emission is into relativistic modes), the continual injection of these particles into a small part of phase space causes them to accumulate over astrophysically long time scales, forming what I call a "stellar basin", in analogy with the geologic kind. The energy density of the Solar basin will surpass that of the relativistic Solar flux at Earth's location after only a million years, for any sufficiently long-lived particle produced through an emission process whose matrix elements are unsuppressed at low momentum. This observation has immediate and striking consequences for direct detection experiments---including new limits on axion parameter space independent of dark matter assumptions---and may also increase the prospects for indirect detection of weakly interacting particles around compact stars.

Contact interactions and top-philic scalar dark matter

We investigate the phenomenology of a scalar top-philic dark matter candidate when adding a dimension-five contact interaction term, as motivated by possible underlying extensions of the Standard Model such as composite Higgs models. We show that the presence of contact interactions can have a major impact on the dark matter relic density as well as on its direct and indirect detection prospects, while the collider phenomenology of the model is unaffected. This underlines the complementarity of collider and cosmological constraints on dark matter models.

Indirect detection prospects for d*(2380) dark matter

A Bose-Einstein condensate of the hexaquark particle known as d*(2380) has been recently proposed as a dark matter candidate by the authors in Bashkanov & Watts 2020. This particle can produced in an abundant condensate state in the early universe and is argued to satisfy all the stability and weak interaction constraints of a viable dark matter candidate. This dark matter candidate is able to evade direct detection bounds and is suggested to have the best observational prospects in the form of indirect astrophysical emissions due to the decay of the d* condensate. In this work we test the indirect observational prospects of this form of dark matter and find that its low mass ∼ 2 GeV mean that sub-GeV gamma-rays searches have the best prospects in the Milky-Way galactic centre where we find Γd* < 3.9 × 10−24 s−1, with current extra-galactic data from M31 and the Coma cluster producing constraints on the d* decay rate two orders of magnitude weaker. In dwarf galaxies we show that the future GAMMA-400 instrument has the potential to probe down to Γd* ∼ 10−25 s−1 with 4 years of exposure time.

Searching for Sub-GeV dark matter in the galactic centre using Hyper-Kamiokande

Indirect detection of dark matter via its annihilation products is a key technique in the search for dark matter in the form of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs). Strong constraints exist on the annihilation of WIMPs to highly visible Standard Model final states such as photons or charged particles. In the case of s-wave annihilation, this typically eliminates thermal relic cross sections for dark matter of mass below \U0001d4aa(10) GeV . However, such limits typically neglect the possibility that dark matter may annihilate to assumed invisible or hard-to-detect final states, such as neutrinos. This is a difficult paradigm to probe due to the weak neutrino interaction cross section. Considering dark matter annihilation in the Galactic halo, we study the prospects for indirect detection using the Hyper-Kamiokande (HyperK) neutrino experiment, for dark matter of mass below 1 GeV . We undertake a dedicated simulation of the HyperK detector, which we benchmark against results from the similar Super-Kamiokande experiment and HyperK physics projections. We provide projections for the annihilation cross-sections that can be probed by HyperK for annihilation to muon or neutrino final states, and discuss uncertainties associated with the dark matter halo profile. For neutrino final states, we find that HyperK is sensitive to thermal annihilation cross-sections for dark matter with mass around 20 MeV, assuming an NFW halo profile. We also discuss the effects of neutron tagging, and prospects for improving the reach at low mass.

Novel constraints on mixed dark-matter scenarios of primordial black holes and WIMPs

We derive constraints on mixed dark-matter scenarios consisting of primordial black holes (PBHs) and weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs). In these scenarios, we expect a density spike of the WIMPs that are gravitationally bound to the PBHs, which results in an enhanced annihilation rate and increased indirect detection prospects. We show that such scenarios provide strong constraints on the allowed fraction of PBHs that constitutes the dark matter, depending on the WIMP mass mχ and the velocity-averaged annihilation cross-section ⟨σv⟩. For the standard scenario with mχ = 100 GeV and ⟨σv⟩ = 3 × 10−26 cm3/s, we derive bounds that are stronger than all existing bounds for PBHs with masses 10−12 M⊙ ≲ MBH ≲ 104 M⊙, where M⊙ is the solar mass, and mostly so by several orders of magnitude.

Prospects for indirect detection of frozen-in dark matter

We study observational consequences arising from dark matter (DM) of non-thermal origin, produced by dark freeze-out from a hidden sector heat bath. We assume this heat bath was populated by feebly-coupled mediator particles, produced via a Higgs portal interaction with the Standard Model (SM). The dark sector then attained internal equilibrium with a characteristic temperature different from the SM photon temperature. We find that even if the coupling between the DM and the SM sectors is very weak, the scenario allows for indirect observational signals. We show how the expected strength of these signals depends on the temperature of the hidden sector at DM freeze-out.

Dark matter spikes in the vicinity of Kerr black holes

The growth of a massive black hole will steepen the cold dark matter density at the center of a galaxy into a dense spike, enhancing the prospects for indirect detection. We study the impact of black hole spin on the density profile using the exact Kerr geometry of the black whole in a fully relativistic adiabatic growth framework. We find that, despite the transfer of angular momentum from the hole to the halo, rotation increases significantly the dark matter density close to the black hole. The gravitational effects are still dominated by the black hole within its influence radius, but the larger dark matter annihilation fluxes might be relevant for indirect detection estimates.

Sterile neutrino portal to Dark Matter II: exact dark symmetry

We analyze a simple extension of the standard model (SM) with a dark sector composed of a scalar and a fermion, both singlets under the SM gauge group but charged under a dark sector symmetry group. Sterile neutrinos, which are singlets under both groups, mediate the interactions between the dark sector and the SM particles, and generate masses for the active neutrinos via the seesaw mechanism. We explore the parameter space region where the observed Dark Matter relic abundance is determined by the annihilation into sterile neutrinos, both for fermion and scalar Dark Matter particles. The scalar Dark Matter case provides an interesting alternative to the usual Higgs portal scenario. We also study the constraints from direct Dark Matter searches and the prospects for indirect detection via sterile neutrino decays to leptons, which may be able to rule out Dark Matter masses below and around 100 GeV.

Heavy bino dark matter and collider signals in the MSSM with vectorlike fourth-generation particles

MSSM4G models, in which the minimal supersymmetric standard model is extended to include vector-like copies of standard model particles, are promising possibilities for weak-scale supersymmetry. In particular, two models, called QUE and QDEE, realize the major virtues of supersymmetry (naturalness consistent with the 125 GeV Higgs boson, gauge coupling unification, and thermal relic neutralino dark matter) without the need for fine-tuned relations between particle masses. We determine the implications of these models for dark matter and collider searches. The QUE and QDEE models revive the possibility of heavy Bino dark matter with mass in the range 300-700 GeV, which is not usually considered. Dark matter direct detection cross sections are typically below current limits, but are naturally expected above the neutrino floor and may be seen at next-generation experiments. Indirect detection prospects are bright at the Cherenkov Telescope Array, provided the 4th-generation leptons have mass above 350 GeV or decay to taus. In a completely complementary way, discovery prospects at the LHC are dim if the 4th-generation leptons are heavy or decay to taus, but are bright for 4th-generation leptons with masses below 350 GeV that decay either to electrons or to muons. We conclude that the combined set of direct detection, CTA, and LHC experiments will discover or exclude these MSSM4G models in the coming few years, assuming the Milky Way has an Einasto dark matter profile.

Naturally stable right-handed neutrino dark matter

We point out that a class of non-supersymmetric models based on the gauge group $SU(3)_C \times SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R\times U(1)_{Y_L}\times U(1)_{Y_R}$ possesses an automatic, exact $Z_{2 }$ symmetry under which the fermions in the $SU(2)_R\times U(1)_{Y_R}$ sector (called $R$-sector) are odd and those in the standard model sector (called $L$-sector) are even. This symmetry, which is different from the usual parity symmetry of the left-right symmetric models, persists in the lepton sector even after the gauge symmetry breaks down to $SU(3)_C \times U(1)_{\rm EM}$. This keeps the lightest right-handed neutrino naturally stable, thereby allowing it to play the role of dark matter (DM) in the Universe. There are several differences between the usual left-right models and the model presented here: (i) our model can have two versions, one which has no parity symmetry so that the couplings and masses in the $L$ and $R$ sectors are unrelated, and another which has parity symmetry so that couplings are related; (ii) the $R$-sector fermions are chosen much heavier than the $L$-sector ones in both scenarios; and finally (iii) both light and heavy neutrinos are Majorana fermions with the light neutrino masses arising from a pure type-II seesaw mechanism. We discuss the DM relic density, direct and indirect detection prospects and associated collider signatures of the model. Comparing with current collider and direct detection constraints, we find a lower bound on the DM mass of order of 1 TeV. We also point out a way to relax the DM unitarity bound in our model for much larger DM masses by an entropy dilution mechanism. An additional feature of the model is that the DM can be made very long lived, if desired, by allowing for weak breaking of the above $Z_{2}$ symmetry. Our model also predicts the existence of long-lived colored particles which could be searched for at the LHC.

Hunting for dark matter coannihilation by mixing dijet resonances and missing transverse energy

Simplified models of the dark matter (co)annihilation mechanism predict striking new collider signatures untested by current searches. These models, which were codified in the coannihilation codex, provide the basis for a dark matter (DM) discovery program at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) driven by the measured DM relic density. In this work, we study an exemplary model featuring $s$-channel DM coannihilation through a scalar diquark mediator as a representative case study of scenarios with strongly interacting coannihilation partners. We discuss the full phenomenology of the model, ranging from low energy flavor constraints, vacuum stability requirements, and precision Higgs effects to direct detection and indirect detection prospects. Moreover, motivated by the relic density calculation, we find significant portions of parameter space are compatible with current collider constraints and can be probed by future searches, including a proposed analysis for the novel signature of a dijet resonance accompanied by missing transverse energy (MET). Our results show that the $13$ TeV LHC with $100~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ luminosity should be sensitive to mediators as heavy as 1 TeV and dark matter in the 400--500 GeV range. The combination of searches for single and paired dijet peaks, non-resonant jets + MET excesses, and our novel resonant dijet + MET signature have strong coverage of the motivated relic density region, reflecting the tight connections between particles determining the dark matter abundance and their experimental signatures at the LHC.

Combined analysis of effective Higgs portal dark matter models

We combine and extend the analyses of effective scalar, vector, Majorana and Dirac fermion Higgs portal models of dark matter (DM), in which DM couples to the Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson via an operator of the form $\mathcal{O}_{\textrm{DM}}\, H^\dagger H$. For the fermion models, we take an admixture of scalar $\overline{\psi} \psi$ and pseudoscalar $\overline{\psi} i\gamma_5 \psi$ interaction terms. For each model, we apply constraints on the parameter space based on the Planck measured DM relic density and the LHC limits on the Higgs invisible branching ratio. For the first time, we perform a consistent study of the indirect detection prospects for these models based on the WMAP7/Planck observations of the cosmic microwave background, a combined analysis of 15 dwarf spheroidal galaxies by Fermi-LAT and the upcoming Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA). We also perform a correct treatment of the momentum-dependent direct search cross section that arises from the pseudoscalar interaction term in the fermionic DM theories. We find, in line with previous studies, that current and future direct search experiments such as LUX and XENON1T can exclude much of the parameter space, and we demonstrate that a joint observation in both indirect and direct searches is possible for high mass weakly interacting massive particles. In the case of a pure pseudoscalar interaction of a fermionic DM candidate, future gamma-ray searches are the only class of experiment capable of probing the high mass range of the theory.

Detection prospects of singlet fermionic dark matter

A singlet fermion which interacts only with a new singlet scalar provides a viable and minimal scenario that can explain the dark matter. The singlet fermion is the dark matter particle whereas the new scalar mixes with the Higgs boson providing a link between the dark matter sector and the Standard Model. In this paper, we present an updated analysis of this model focused on its detection prospects. Both, the parity-conserving case and the most general case are considered. First, the full parameter space of the model is analyzed, and the regions compatible with the dark matter constraint are obtained and characterized. Then, the implications of current and future direct detection experiments are taken into account. Specifically, we determine the regions of the multidimensional parameter space that are currently excluded and those that are going to be probed by next generation experiments. Finally, indirect detection prospects are discussed and the expected signal at neutrino telescopes is calculated.

Natural GeV dark matter and the baryon-dark matter coincidence puzzle

We present a simple extension of the standard model that gives rise to baryogenesis a has a dark matter candidate of O(GeV) mass. A minimal set of new fields required for baryogenesis includes two O(TeV) colored scalars and a singlet fermion. The fermion also becomes a viable dark matter candidate when its is nearly degenerate in mass with the proton. Dark matter and baryon asymmetry are produced form the decay of heavy scalars, which can lead to a natural explanation of the baryon-dark matter coincidence problem. The dark matter candidate escapes direct and indirect detection, but can be probed at the LHC. The supersymmetric extension of this model is straightforward and leads to a multi-component dark matter scenario, which improves the direct and indirect detection prospects.

Global fits of the cMSSM including the first LHC and XENON100 data

We present updated global fits of the constrained Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (cMSSM), including the most recent constraints from the ATLAS and CMS detectors at the LHC, as well as the most recent results of the XENON100 experiment. Our robust analysis takes into account both astrophysical and hadronic uncertainties that enter in the calculation of the rate of WIMP-induced recoils in direct detection experiment.We study the consequences for neutralino Dark Matter, and show that current direct detection data already allow to robustly rule out the so-called Focus Point region, therefore demonstrating the importance of particle astrophysics experiments in constraining extensions of the Standard Model of Particle Physics. We also observe an increased compatibility between results obtained from a Bayesian and a Frequentist statistical perspective. We find that upcoming ton-scale direct detection experiments will probe essentially the entire currently favoured region (at the 99% level), almost independently of the statistical approach used. Prospects for indirect detection of the cMSSM are further reduced.

Fermion WIMPless dark matter at DeepCore and IceCube

We investigate the prospects for indirect detection of fermion WIMPless dark matter at the neutrino telescopes IceCube and DeepCore. The dark matter annihilating in the Sun is a hidden sector Majorana fermion that couples through Yukawa couplings to a connector particle and a visible sector particle, and it exhibits only spin-dependent scattering with nuclei via couplings to first generation quarks. We consider cases where the annihilation products are taus, staus, or sneutrinos of the three generations. To evaluate the muon fluxes incident at the detector, we propagate the neutrino spectra through the solar medium and to the Earth and account for the effects of neutrino oscillations, energy losses due to neutral- and charged-current interactions, and tau regeneration. We find that for the stau and sneutrino channels, a 5 yr $3\ensuremath{\sigma}$ detection of dark matter lighter than about 300 GeV is possible at IceCube for large Yukawa couplings or for dark matter and connector particles with similar masses. The tau channel offers far better detection prospects. However, due to its lower energy threshold and better muon background rejection capability, DeepCore is able to detect signals in all annihilation channels and for a wider range of dark matter masses.
