A modular motion compensation pipeline for prospective respiratory motion correction of multi-nuclear MR spectroscopy

Magnetic resonance (MR) acquisitions of the torso are frequently affected by respiratory motion with detrimental effects on signal quality. The motion of organs inside the body is typically decoupled from surface motion and is best captured using rapid MR imaging (MRI). We propose a pipeline for prospective motion correction of the target organ using MR image navigators providing absolute motion estimates in millimeters. Our method is designed to feature multi-nuclear interleaving for non-proton MR acquisitions and to tolerate local transmit coils with inhomogeneous field and sensitivity distributions. OpenCV object tracking was introduced for rapid estimation of in-plane displacements in 2D MR images. A full three-dimensional translation vector was derived by combining displacements from slices of multiple and arbitrary orientations. The pipeline was implemented on 3 T and 7 T MR scanners and tested in phantoms and volunteers. Fast motion handling was achieved with low-resolution 2D MR image navigators and direct implementation of OpenCV into the MR scanner’s reconstruction pipeline. Motion-phantom measurements demonstrate high tracking precision and accuracy with minor processing latency. The feasibility of the pipeline for reliable in-vivo motion extraction was shown on heart and kidney data. Organ motion was manually assessed by independent operators to quantify tracking performance. Object tracking performed convincingly on 7774 navigator images from phantom scans and different organs in volunteers. In particular the kernelized correlation filter (KCF) achieved similar accuracy (74%) as scored from inter-operator comparison (82%) while processing at a rate of over 100 frames per second. We conclude that fast 2D MR navigator images and computer vision object tracking can be used for accurate and rapid prospective motion correction. This and the modular structure of the pipeline allows for the proposed method to be used in imaging of moving organs and in challenging applications like cardiac magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) guided radiotherapy.

B0-insensitive image navigators for prospective motion-corrected MRS with localized second-order shimming.

Localized shimming in single-voxel MRS often results in large B0 inhomogeneity outside the volume-of-interest. This causes unacceptable degradation in motion navigator images. Switching back and forth between whole-brain shim and localized shim is possible for linear shims, but not for higher-order shims. Here we propose motion navigators largely insensitive to B0 inhomogeneity for prospective motion-corrected MRS with localized higher-order shimming. A recent fast high-resolution motion navigator based on spiral-in/out k-space trajectories and multislice-to-volume registration was modified by splitting the readout into multiple shot interleaves which shortened the echo time and reduced the effect of B0 inhomogeneity. The performance of motion correction was assessed in healthy subjects in the prefrontal cortex using a sLASER sequence at 3T (N = 5) and 7T (N = 5). With multiple spatial interleaves, excellent quality navigator images were acquired in the whole brain in spite of large B0 inhomogeneity outside the MRS voxel. The total duration of the navigator in sLASER remained relatively short even with multiple shots (3T: 10 spatial interleaves 94 ms per slice; 7T: 15 spatial interleaves 103 ms per slice). Prospective motion correction using the multi-shot navigators yielded comparable spectral quality (water linewidth and metabolite SNR) with and without subject motion. B0-insensitive motion navigators enable prospective motion correction for MRS with all first- and second-order shims adjusted in the MRS voxel, providing optimal spectral linewidth.

Awake pediatric brain-MRI: a fast multi-sequence scan augmented with motion compensated single-shot 2D acquisitions

Abstract Background Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is susceptible to motion artifacts, a particular challenge in pediatric imaging. External motion tracking devices and navigator techniques have been previously explored, but challenges persist necessitating sedation. Purpose To establish a new awake brain-MRI exam tolerated by children with diagnostic quality images. Materials and Methods Participants were prospectively recruited and investigated using an in-house developed multi-sequence scan called NeuroMix that produces T1-weighted, T2-weighted, T2*-weighted, T2-FLAIR, and diffusion-weighted images in under 3 minutes. Additionally, a self-created motion tracking device was attached to participants' foreheads to perform prospective motion correction (PMC) on 2D single-shot sequences that produce higher resolution images of the same contrasts as NeuroMix. Three neuroradiologists scored the completed series for artifacts. The effects of age group (<5 vs ≥5 years) and sequence type (NeuroMix vs PMC) were evaluated with a Chi2-test. Results Of the 64 participants recruited (mean age 6.7 years [2.7 standard deviation]) 58 completed their examination. Head motion recorded during PMC sequences revealed prevalent superior-inferior displacements [25% (67/293) exceeding 13.2 mm], and chin-up/down rotations [25% (67/293) exceeding 13.7°]. Sequence redundancy through NeuroMix and PMC scans resulted in 93% (54/58) of completed examinations having all series essential for producing an MRI-report rated as artifact-free, and therefore a report of high confidence in 84% (54/64) of participants. 22% (13/58) of completed exam reports could have been written using NeuroMix alone, the remaining required PMC- T2-weighted or T2-FLAIR sequences. Conclusion This protocol reliably provided diagnostic quality images and reports with high radiologist confidence and could reduce the use of procedure sedation in children.

Effects of prospective motion correction on perivascular spaces at 7T MRI evaluated using motion artifact simulation.

The effectiveness of prospective motion correction (PMC) is often evaluated by comparing artifacts in images acquired with and without PMC (NoPMC). However, such an approach is not applicable in clinical setting due to unavailability of NoPMC images. We aim to develop a simulation approach for demonstrating the ability of fat-navigator-based PMC in improving perivascular space (PVS) visibility in T2-weighted MRI. MRI datasets from two earlier studies were used for motion artifact simulation and evaluating PMC, including T2-weighted NoPMC and PMC images. To simulate motion artifacts, k-space data at motion-perturbed positions were calculated from artifact-freeimages using nonuniform Fourier transform and misplaced onto the Cartesian grid before inverse Fourier transform. The simulation's ability to reproduce motion-induced blurring, ringing, and ghosting artifacts was evaluated using sharpness at lateral ventricle/white matter boundary, ringing artifact magnitude in the Fourier spectrum, and background noise, respectively. PVS volume fraction in white matter was employed to reflect its visibility. In simulation, sharpness, PVS volume fraction, and background noise exhibited significant negative correlations with motion score. Significant correlations were found in sharpness, ringing artifact magnitude, and PVS volume fraction between simulated and real NoPMC images (p ≤ 0.006). In contrast, such correlations were reduced and nonsignificant between simulated and real PMC images (p ≥ 0.48), suggesting reduction of motion effects with PMC. The proposed simulation approach is an effective tool to study the effects of motion and PMC on PVS visibility. PMC may reduce the systematic bias of PVS volume fraction caused by motion artifacts.

Servo navigators: Linear regression and feedback control for rigid-body motion correction.

Navigator-based correction of rigid-body motion reconciling high precision with minimal acquisition, minimal calibration and simple, fast processing. A short orbital navigator (2.3 ms) is inserted in a three-dimensional (3D) gradient echo sequence for human head imaging. Head rotation and translation are determined by linear regression based on a complex-valued model built either from three reference navigators or in a reference-less fashion, from the first actual navigator. Optionally, the model is expanded by global phase and field offset. Run-time scan correction on this basis establishes servo control that maintains validity of the linear picture by keeping its expansion point stable in the head frame of reference. The technique is assessed in a phantom and demonstrated by motion-corrected imaging in vivo. The proposed approach is found to establish stable motion control both with and without reference acquisition. In a phantom, it is shown to accurately detect motion mimicked by rotation of scan geometry as well as change in global B0 . It is demonstrated to converge to accurate motion estimates after perturbation well beyond the linear signal range. In vivo, servo navigation achieved motion detection with precision in the single-digit range of micrometers and millidegrees. Involuntary and intentional motion in the range of several millimeters were successfully corrected, achieving excellent image quality. The combination of linear regression and feedback control enables prospective motion correction for head imaging with high precision and accuracy, short navigator readouts, fast run-time computation, and minimal demand for reference data.

Prospective motion correction for brain MRI using spherical navigators.

To demonstrate for the first time the feasibility of performing prospective motion correction using spherical navigators (SNAVs). SNAVs were interleaved in a 3D FLASH sequence with an additional short baseline scan (6.8 s) for fast rotation estimation. Assessment of SNAV-based prospective motion correction was performed in six volunteers. Participant motion was guided using randomly generated stepwise prompts as well as prompts derived from real motion cases. Experiments were performed on a 3 T MRI scanner using a 32-channel head coil. When optimized for real-time application, SNAV-based motion estimates were computed in 25.8 ± 1.3 ms. Phantom-based quantification of rotation and translation accuracy indicated mean absolute errors of 0.10 ± 0.09° and 0.25 ± 0.14 mm, respectively. Implementing SNAV-based motion estimates for prospective motion correction led to a clear improvement in image quality with minimal increase in scan time (<5%). Optimization of SNAV processing for real-time application enables prospective motion correction with low latency and minimal scan time requirements.

Fast high-resolution prospective motion correction for single-voxel spectroscopy.

To develop a fast high-resolution image-based motion correction method using spiral navigators with multislice-to-volume registration. A semi-LASER sequence was modified to include a multislice spiral navigator for prospective motion correction (∼305 ms including acquisition, processing, and feedback) as well as shim and frequency navigators for prospective shim and frequency correction (∼100 ms for each). MR spectra were obtained in the prefrontal cortex in five healthy subjects at 3 T with and without prospective motion and shim correction. The effect of key navigator parameters (number of slices, image resolution, and excitation flip angle) on registration accuracy was assessed using simulations. Without prospective motion and shim correction, spectral quality degraded significantly in the presence of voluntary motion. In contrast, with prospective motion and shim correction, spectral quality was improved (metabolite linewidth = 6.7 ± 0.6 Hz, SNR= 67 ± 9) and in good agreement with baseline data without motion (metabolite linewidth = 6.9 ± 0.9 Hz, SNR = 73 ± 9). In addition, there was no significant difference in metabolites concentrations measured without motion and with prospective motion and shim correction in the presence of motion. Simulations showed that the registration precision was comparable when using three navigator slices with 3 mm resolution and when using the entire volume (all slices) with 8 mm resolution. The proposed motion correction scheme allows fast and precise prospective motion and shim correction for single-voxel spectroscopy at 3 T. With 3 mm resolution, only a few navigator slices are necessary to achieve excellent motion correction performance.

Ultra‐high‐resolution quantitative MRI at the grey/white interface in Alzheimer’s disease and posterior cortical atrophy

AbstractBackgroundCortical grey matter (CGM) and superficial white matter (SWM) undergo pathological changes, but standard MRI spatial resolutions make interpreting disease‐related effects at their interface challenging. We present findings from a study investigating the grey/white interface in typical amnestic Alzheimer’s disease (tAD), posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) and healthy controls using ultra‐high‐resolution quantitative MRI measures sensitive to microstructural properties.MethodEleven participants (Table 1) were scanned at 7T using multi‐echo FLASH (0.5mm isotropic resolution with prospective motion correction) and diffusion MRI (dMRI) (1.25mm isotropic resolution). The hMRI toolbox produced multi‐parametric mapping (MPM) measures: R1, R2* and Proton Density (PD) (Vaculciakova et al., 2021https://doi.org/10.1002/mrm.29253). dMRI processing included denoising and correcting for Gibbs ringing, eddy currents, susceptibility artifacts and motion. Metrics from dMRI were fractional anisotropy (FA), and mean diffusivity (MD), as well as tissue fraction (TF), neurite density index (NDI) and orientation dispersion index (ODI) from Neurite Orientation Dispersion and Density Imaging (NODDI). A deep learning segmentation approach estimated the grey/white boundary (Billot et al., 2021, arXiv:2107.09559). MPM and dMRI measures were sampled from the CGM into the SWM at 0.5mm increments in regions of interest (Harvard‐Oxford cortical atlas). Tissue‐weighted (tw) averages were calculated for NDI and ODI. Metrics were visualized across the grey/white interface using boxplots.ResultFigures 1‐2 show MPM and dMRI measures in the precuneus (dashed lines indicate group medians). Qualitatively, most tAD and PCA participants had lower R1 and R2* than controls, most prominently 0.5mm into the SWM (Figure 1). PD appeared higher in tAD and PCA patients across the grey/white interface. Qualitatively, most tAD and PCA participants had lower TF and higher MD in the CGM, where twNDI and FA appeared lower than controls across grey/white interface (Figure 2). Most tAD and PCA had qualitatively lower twODI in CGM and a flatter slope across the grey/white interface compared to controls.ConclusionMacromolecular (R1, R2* and twNDI) and iron content (R2*) MR measures at 7T appear reduced in tAD and PCA across the grey/white interface, whereas neurite organisational complexity (twODI) may become more homogeneous. Ongoing study will assess if these findings are consistent with further participants.

Prospective motion correction for cervical spinal cord MRS.

To develop prospective motion correction for single-voxel MRS in the human cervical spinal cord. A motion MR navigator was implemented using reduced field-of-view 2D-selective RF excitation together with EPI readout. A short-echo semi-LASER sequence (TE = 30 ms) was updated to incorporate this real-time image-based motion navigator, as well as real-time shim and frequency navigators. Five healthy participants were studied at 3 T with a 64-channel head-neck receive coil. Single-voxel MRS data were measured in a voxel located at the C3-5 vertebrae level. The motion navigator was used to correct for translations in the X-Y plane and was validated by assessing spectral quality with and without prospective correction in the presence of subject motion. Without prospective correction, motion resulted in severe lipid contamination in the MR spectra. With prospective correction, the quality of spinal cord MR spectra in the presence of motion was similar to that obtained in the absence of motion, with comparable spectral signal-to-noise ratio and linewidth and no significant lipid contamination. Prospective motion and B0 correction allow acquisition of good-quality MR spectra in the human cervical spinal cord in the presence of motion. This new technique should facilitate reliable acquisition of spinal cord MR spectra in both research and clinical settings.

Time-Resolved Quantification of Patellofemoral Cartilage Deformation in Response to Loading and Unloading via Dynamic MRI With Prospective Motion Correction.

In vivo cartilage deformation has been studied by static magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with in situ loading, but knowledge about strain dynamics after load onset and release is scarce. To measure the dynamics of patellofemoral cartilage deformation and recovery in response to in situ loading and unloading by using MRI with prospective motion correction. Prospective. Ten healthy male volunteers (age: [31.4 ± 3.2] years). T1-weighted RF-spoiled 2D gradient-echo sequence with a golden angle radial acquisition scheme, augmented with prospective motion correction, at 3 T. In situ knee loading was realized with a flexion angle of approximately 40° using an MR-compatible pneumatic loading device. The loading paradigm consisted of 2 minutes of unloaded baseline followed by a 5-minute loading bout with 50% body weight and an unloading period of 38 minutes. The cartilage strain was assessed as the mean distance between patellar and femoral bone-cartilage interfaces as a percentage of the initial (pre-load) distance. Wilcoxon signed-rank tests (significance level: P < 0.05), Pearson correlation coefficient (r). The cartilage compression and recovery behavior was characterized by a viscoelastic response. The elastic compression ([-12.5 ± 3.1]%) was significantly larger than the viscous compression ([-7.6 ± 1.5]%) and the elastic recovery ([10.5 ± 2.1]%) was significantly larger than the viscous recovery ([6.1 ± 1.8]%). There was a significant residual offset strain ([-3.6 ± 2.3]%) across the cohort. A significant negative correlation between elastic compression and elastic recovery was observed (r = -0.75). The in vivo cartilage compression and recovery time course in response to loading was successfully measured via dynamic MRI with prospective motion correction. The clinical relevance of the strain characteristics needs to be assessed in larger subject and patient cohorts. 2 TECHNICAL EFFICACY: Stage 1.

Study protocol: value of 7-T MRI with prospective motion correction and postprocessing for patients with nonlesional epilepsy

AbstractThe diagnostic yield of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) postprocessing using 7‑T data for patients with nonlesional epilepsy has been rarely evaluated, but has shown acceptable diagnostic outcomes. However, to date there have been no prospective clinical studies comparing MP2RAGE sequences in 3‑T and 7‑T MRI in parallel using the same protocol for morphometric analysis. We present a study protocol developed to address the hypothesis that application of 7‑T structural MRI increases the rate of detection of structural lesions with morphometric analysis when compared with parallel coherent study protocols in 3‑T MRI. The 7‑T MRI study protocol is designed to supply data showing the clinical practicability and proof of principle for increasing the detection rate of subtle epileptogenic lesions.

Simultaneous multislice EPI prospective motion correction by real-time receiver phase correction and coil sensitivity map interpolation.

To improve the image reconstruction for prospective motion correction (PMC) of simultaneous multislice (SMS) EPI of the brain, an update of receiver phase and resampling of coil sensitivities are proposed and evaluated. A camera-based system was used to track head motion (3 translations and 3 rotations) and dynamically update the scanposition and orientation. We derived the change in receiver phase associated with a shifted field of view (FOV) and applied it in real-time to each k-space line of the EPI readout trains. Second, for the SMS reconstruction, we adapted resampled coil sensitivity profiles reflecting the movement of slices. Single-shot gradient-echo SMS-EPI scans were performed in phantoms and human subjects for validation. Brain SMS-EPI scans in the presence of motion with PMC and no phase correction for scan plane shift showed noticeable artifacts. These artifacts were visually and quantitatively attenuated when corrections were enabled. Correcting misaligned coil sensitivity maps improved the temporal SNR (tSNR) of time series by 24% (p = 0.0007) for scans with large movements (up to ˜35 mm and 30°). Correcting the receiver phase improved the tSNR of a scan with minimal head movement by 50% from 50 to 75 for a United Kingdom biobank protocol. Reconstruction-induced motion artifacts in single-shot SMS-EPI scans acquired with PMC can be removed by dynamically adjusting the receiver phase of each line across EPI readout trains and updating coil sensitivity profiles during reconstruction. The method may be a valuable tool for SMS-EPI scans in the presence of subject motion.

Feasibility of tracking involuntary head movement for MRI using a coil as a magnetic dipole in a time-varying gradient

Accurate tracking involuntary head movements is fairly a challenging problem in MR imaging of the brain. Though there are few techniques available to monitor the head movement of the subject for a prospective motion correction, it is still an unsolved problem in MRI. In this theoretical study, we aim to describe an analytical investigation to track head movement inside an MR scanner by calculating the change in induced voltage in the head-mounted coils during the execution of time-varying gradients. We derive an expression to calculate the change in induced voltage in a coil placed in a time-varying gradient. We also derive a general equation to investigate the changes in the induced voltage in a set of coils mounted onto the head for the planar position and orientation of the coils. Each coil is considered as a magnetic dipole with location and sensitivity vectors. The changes of the vectors can track the head movement in the MR scanner by measuring the changes in the induced voltage in the coils. The dipole concept is valid for a wide range of coils. The changes in induced voltage in the coils are linear due to small changes in pose of the head. Movement parameters are estimated from the induced voltage changes. If the random noise voltage is less than 100 μV, it does not significantly affect movement parameters because the change in induced voltage in the coils dominates over the small noise voltage. This method and array of the coils may provide a real-life solution to the long-standing problem of head motion during MRI.

Camera-based Prospective Motion Correction in Paediatric Epilepsy Patients Enables EEG-fMRI Localization Even in High-motion States

Background: EEG-fMRI is a useful additional test to localize the epileptogenic zone (EZ) particularly in MRI negative cases. However subject motion presents a particular challenge owing to its large effects on both MRI and EEG signal. Traditionally it is assumed that prospective motion correction (PMC) of fMRI precludes EEG artifact correction. Methods: Children undergoing presurgical assessment at Great Ormond Street Hospital were included into the study. PMC of fMRI was done using a commercial system with a Moiré Phase Tracking marker and MR-compatible camera. For retrospective EEG correction both a standard and a motion educated EEG artefact correction (REEGMAS) were compared to each other. Results: Ten children underwent simultaneous EEG-fMRI. Overall head movement was high (mean RMS velocity < 1.5 mm/s) and showed high inter- and intra-individual variability. Comparing motion measured by the PMC camera and the (uncorrected residual) motion detected by realignment of fMRI images, there was a five-fold reduction in motion from its prospective correction. Retrospective EEG correction using both standard approaches and REEGMAS allowed the visualization and identification of physiological noise and epileptiform discharges. Seven of 10 children had significant maps, which were concordant with the clinical EZ hypothesis in 6 of these 7. Conclusion: To our knowledge this is the first application of camera-based PMC for MRI in a pediatric clinical setting. Despite large amount of movement PMC in combination with retrospective EEG correction recovered data and obtained clinically meaningful results during high levels of subject motion. Practical limitations may currently limit the widespread use of this technology.

Navigator-based slice tracking for prospective motion correction in kidney vessel architecture imaging

ObjectivesTo apply a navigator-based slice tracking method to prospectively compensate the respiratory motion for kidney vessel architecture imaging (VAI). Materials and methodsA dual gradient echo spin echo 2D EPI sequence was developed for kidney VAI. A single gradient-echo slice selection and projection readout at the location of the diaphragm along the inferior-superior direction was applied as a navigator. Navigator acquisition and fat suppression were inserted before each transverse imaging slice. Motion information was calculated after exclusion of the signal saturation in the navigator signal caused by imaging slices. The motion information was then directly sent back to the sequence and slice positioning was adjusted in real-time. The whole sequence was applied during a contrast agent pass-through. ResultsVAI parametric maps show the structural heterogeneity of the renal vasculature. The respiratory motion from the navigator signal was precisely calculated and slice positioning was changed in real-time based on the motion information. The vibration amplitude of the signal intensity of the liver tissue at the liver-lung interface in the case of prospective motion correction (PMC) on is about 28% of the PMC off case. Compared to the case of PMC off, the coefficient of variation was reduced 30% of the case of PMC on. ConclusionsThis study demonstrates the feasibility of the motion-compensating technique in kidney VAI. The sequence may improve the evaluation of microvasculature in kidney diseases.

Individual Influence of Trochlear Dysplasia on Patellofemoral Kinematics after Isolated MPFL Reconstruction.

The influence of the MPFL graft in cases of patella instability with dysplastic trochlea is a controversial topic. The effect of the MPFL reconstruction as single therapy is under investigation, especially with severely dysplastic trochlea (Dejour types C and D). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of trochlear dysplasia on patellar kinematics in patients suffering from low flexion patellar instability under weight-bearing conditions after isolated MPFL reconstruction. Thirteen patients were included in this study, among them were eight patients with mild dysplasia (Dejour type A and B) and five patients with severe dysplasia (Dejour type C and D). By performing a knee MRI with in situ loading, patella kinematics and the patellofemoral cartilage contact area could be measured under the activation of the quadriceps musculature in knee flexion angles of 0°, 15° and 30°. To mitigate MRI motion artefacts, prospective motion correction based on optical tracking was applied. Bone and cartilage segmentation were performed semi-automatically for further data analysis. Cartilage contact area (CCA) and patella tilt were the main outcome measures for this study. Pre- and post-surgery measures were compared for each group. Data visualized a trending lower patella tilt after MPFL graft installation in both groups and flexion angles of the knee. There were no significant changes in patella tilt at 0° (unloaded pre-surgery: 22.6 ± 15.2; post-surgery: 17.7 ± 14.3; p = 0.110) and unloaded 15° flexion (pre-surgery: 18.9 ± 12.7; post-surgery: 12.2 ± 13.0; p = 0.052) of the knee in patients with mild dysplasia, whereas in patients with severe dysplasia of the trochlea the results happened not to be significant in the same angles with loading of 5 kg (0° flexion pre-surgery: 34.4 ± 12.1; post-surgery: 31.2 ± 16.1; p = 0.5; 15° flexion pre-surgery: 33.3 ± 6.1; post-surgery: 23.4 ± 8.6; p = 0.068). CCA increased in every flexion angle and group, but significant increase was seen only between 0°-15° (unloaded and loaded) in mild dysplasia of the trochlea, where significant increase in Dejour type C and D group was seen with unloaded full extension of the knee (0° flexion) and 30° flexion (unloaded and loaded). This study proves a significant effect of the MPFL graft to cartilage contact area, as well as an improvement of the patella tilt in patients with mild dysplasia of the trochlea. Thus, the MPFL can be used as a single treatment for patient with Dejour type A and B dysplasia. However, in patients with severe dysplasia the MPFL graft alone does not significantly increase CCA.

Robust high spatio-temporal line-scanning fMRI in humans at 7T using multi-echo readouts, denoising and prospective motion correction

BackgroundFunctional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), typically using blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) contrast weighted imaging, allows the study of brain function with millimeter spatial resolution and temporal resolution of one to a few seconds. At a mesoscopic scale, neurons in the human brain are spatially organized in structures with dimensions of hundreds of micrometers, while they communicate at the millisecond timescale. For this reason, it is important to develop an fMRI method with simultaneous high spatial and temporal resolution. Line-scanning promises to reach this goal at the cost of volume coverage. New methodHere, we release a comprehensive update to human line-scanning fMRI. First, we investigated multi-echo line-scanning with five different protocols varying the number of echoes and readout bandwidth while keeping the TR constant. In these, we compared different echo combination approaches in terms of BOLD activation (sensitivity) and temporal signal-to-noise ratio. Second, we implemented an adaptation of NOise reduction with DIstribution Corrected principal component analysis (NORDIC) thermal noise removal for line-scanning fMRI data. Finally, we tested three image-based navigators for motion correction and investigated different ways of performing fMRI analysis on the timecourses which were influenced by the insertion of the navigators themselves. ResultsThe presented improvements are relatively straightforward to implement; multi-echo readout and NORDIC denoising together, significantly improve data quality in terms of tSNR and t-statistical values, while motion correction makes line-scanning fMRI more robust. Comparison with existing methodsMulti-echo acquisitions and denoising have previously been applied in 3D magnetic resonance imaging. Their combination and application to 1D line-scanning is novel. The current proposed method greatly outperforms the previous line-scanning acquisitions with single-echo acquisition, in terms of tSNR (4.0 for single-echo line-scanning and 36.2 for NORDIC-denoised multi-echo) and t-statistical values (3.8 for single-echo line-scanning and 25.1 for NORDIC-denoised multi-echo line-scanning). ConclusionsLine-scanning fMRI was advanced compared to its previous implementation in order to improve sensitivity and reliability. The improved line-scanning acquisition could be used, in the future, for neuroscientific and clinical applications.

High-resolution multi-shot diffusion-weighted MRI combining markerless prospective motion correction andlocally low-rank constrained reconstruction.

Subject head motion is a major challenge in DWI, leading to image blurring, signal losses, and biases in the estimated diffusion parameters. Here, we investigate a combined application of prospective motion correction and spatial-angular locally low-rank constrained reconstruction to obtain robust, multi-shot, high-resolution diffusion-weighted MRI under substantial motion. Single-shot EPI with retrospective motion correction can mitigate motion artifacts and resolve any mismatching of gradient encoding orientations; however, it is limited by low spatial resolution and image distortions. Multi-shot acquisition strategies could achieve higher resolution and image fidelity but increase the vulnerability to motion artifacts and phase variations related to cardiac pulsations from shot to shot. We use prospective motion correction with optical markerless motion tracking to remove artifacts and reduce image blurring due to bulk motion, combined with locally low-rank regularization to correct for remaining artifacts due to shot-to-shot phase variations. The approach was evaluated on healthy adult volunteers at 3 Tesla under different motion patterns. In multi-shot DWI, image blurring due to motion with 20 mm translations and 30° rotations was successfully removed by prospective motion correction, and aliasing artifacts caused by shot-to-shot phase variations were addressed by locally low-rank regularization. The ability of prospective motion correction to preserve the orientational information in DTI without requiring a reorientation of the b-matrix is highlighted. The described technique is proved to hold valuable potential for mapping brain diffusivity and connectivity at high resolution for studies in subjects/cohorts where motion is common, including neonates, pediatrics, and patients with neurological disorders.

In-vivo assessment of meniscal movement in the knee joint during internal and external rotation under load

PurposeThe menisci transmit load between femur and tibia and thus play a crucial role in the functionality of the knee joint. Knee joint movements have a major impact on the position of the menisci. However, these meniscus movements have not yet been assessed in a validated setting. The objective of this study is to evaluate the meniscal movements in MRI with prospective motion correction based on optical tracking under loading via internal and external tibial torques. MethodsThirty-one healthy volunteers were recruited for this study. MRI scans were performed in internal and external rotation induced by a torque of 5 Nm, using a 3 T MRI. A validated software used the generated images to calculate the absolute meniscus movements as the sum of all vectors. Differences between subgroups were analyzed by using a Wilcoxon signed-rank test. ResultsThe MM shows an average movement of 1.79 mm in anterior-lateral direction under internal rotation and 6.01 mm in posterior-lateral direction under external rotation, whereas the LM moves an average of 4.55 mm in posterior-medial direction under internal rotation and 3.58 mm in anterior-medial direction under external rotation. When comparing the overall meniscus movements between internal and external rotation, statistically significant differences were found for total vector length and the direction of meniscus movements for medial and lateral meniscus. The comparison between medial and lateral meniscus movements also showed statistically significant differences in all categories for internal and external rotation.ConclusionsOverall, the MM and LM movements in internal and external rotation differ significantly in extent and direction, although MM and LM movements in opposite directions during internal and external rotation can be observed. In internal rotation, most meniscus movements were found in the IHLM. In external rotation, the IHMM showed the greatest mobility. Segment analysis of internal vs. external rotation showed less difference in LM movements than MM.Level of evidenceLevel II.

Prospective motion correction in kidney MRI using FID navigators.

Abdominal MRI scans may require breath-holding to prevent image quality degradation, which can be challenging for patients, especially children. In this study, we evaluate whether FID navigators can be used to measure and correct for motion prospectively, in real-time. FID navigators were inserted into a 3D radial sequence with stack-of-stars sampling. MRI experiments were conducted on 6 healthy volunteers. A calibration scan was first acquired to create a linear motion model that estimates the kidney displacement due to respiration from the FID navigator signal. This model was then applied to predict and prospectively correct for motion in real time during deep and continuous deep breathing scans. Resultant images acquired with the proposed technique were compared with those acquired without motion correction. Dice scores were calculated between inhale/exhale motion states. Furthermore, images acquired using the proposed technique were compared with images from extra-dimensional golden-angle radial sparse parallel, a retrospective motion state binning technique. Images reconstructed for each motion state show that the kidneys' position could be accurately tracked and corrected with the proposed method. The mean of Dice scores computed between the motion states were improved from 0.93 to 0.96 using the proposed technique. Depiction of the kidneys was improved in the combined images of all motion states. Comparing results of the proposed technique and extra-dimensional golden-angle radial sparse parallel, high-quality images can be reconstructed from a fraction of spokes using the proposed method. The proposed technique reduces blurriness and motion artifacts in kidney imaging by prospectively correcting their position both in-plane and through-slice.
