Enhanced degradation of tetracycline by TiO2@MXene with peroxydisulfate under visible light irradiation

Photocatalysis and peroxydisulfate (PS) based advanced oxidation techniques are promising technologies in the field of water treatment that can be used to destroy increasingly persistent organic contaminants. The current work used a simple hydrothermal approach to synthesize a catalyst made of composites of TiO2 nanospheres and multi-layer Ti3C2Tx sheets (TiO2@MXene). Tetracycline (TC) was then effectively degraded by the TiO2@MXene material integrated with PS activation (300 mg/L). Under simulated sunlight (AM 1.5G, P = 2.8 W) irradiation, the combination method dramatically increases TC degradation. Following a 30-min treatment with 300 mg/L TiO2@MXene (wt.10 %), the optimal efficiency can reach 100 %. As the reactive functional species, holes (h+), SO4-•, •OH, and •O2− dominate the catalytic process. Furthermore, investigation was conducted into significant factors such as catalyst dosage, PS dosage, common anions, and TiO2 loading dosage. The TiO2@MXene material was demonstrated to be a feasible and sustainable strategy worth taking into consideration in the mitigation of emerging water contaminants due to its ease of recovery, stability of surface properties, and recyclability. Furthermore, the proposed degradation mechanism further demonstrated the viability of TiO2@MXene with PS in TC degradation. This, this study provides insights into the design of effective photocatalyst coupling PS activation for the efficient degradation of organic pollutants.

Proteomic examination of polyester-polyurethane degradation by Streptomyces sp. PU10: Diverting polyurethane intermediates to secondary metabolite production.

Global plastic waste accumulation has become omnipresent in public discourse and the focus of scientific research. Ranking as the sixth most produced polymer globally, polyurethanes (PU) significantly contribute to plastic waste and environmental pollution due to the toxicity of their building blocks, such as diisocyanates. In this study, the effects of PU on soil microbial communities over 18 months were monitored revealing that it had marginal effects on microbial diversity. However, Streptomyces sp. PU10, isolated from this PU-contaminated soil, proved exceptional in the degradation of a soluble polyester-PU (Impranil) across a range of temperatures with over 96% degradation of 10 g/L in 48 h. Proteins involved in PU degradation and metabolic changes occurring in this strain with Impranil as the sole carbon source were further investigated employing quantitative proteomics. The proposed degradation mechanism implicated the action of three enzymes: a polyester-degrading esterase, a urethane bond-degrading amidase and an oxidoreductase. Furthermore, proteome data revealed that PU degradation intermediates were incorporated into Streptomyces sp. PU10 metabolism via the fatty acid degradation pathway and subsequently channelled to polyketide biosynthesis. Most notably, the production of the tri-pyrrole undecylprodigiosin was confirmed paving the way for establishing PU upcycling strategies to bioactive metabolites using Streptomyces strains.

Insights on the chlorine resistance of polyester composite nanofiltration membranes

The use of chlorine as a pretreatment of water treatment and desalination processes causes a loss in performance and lifespan of the membranes usually employed in these processes. Polyester (PE) membranes have been proposed as an alternative due to the absence of amidic hydrogen; however, fabricating PE composite membranes with equivalent performance and high tolerance towards chlorine has proven challenging. In this work, we evaluate the effects of monomer concentration and blends, proton scavenger, surfactant concentration, reaction time and temperature on interfacial polymerization (IP) of trimesoyl chloride and resorcinol. Reaction temperature was the most crucial factor to achieve a PE coating film with high crosslinking degree (XD), high divalent rejection and excellent chlorine tolerance. The resorcinol membrane showed a Na2SO4 rejection of >90 % before and after 6000 ppmh-Cl2 at pH 7. XPS analysis showed that chlorination of PE membranes resulted in loss of CC bonds and increase in C–C and C–O bonds. At high crosslinking degrees, the changes caused by chlorine were minimal. Based on the characterization and the performance of the chlorinated membranes, ring chlorination followed by ring hydrolysis is the proposed mechanism for degradation of lower XD membranes.

The Durability of the Platinum/Polypyrrole Nanotubes' Catalysts in Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Platinum (Pt) catalysts supported on carbon-based materials are effective catalysts for fuel cells. However, the durability of the carbon supports in acidic media needs to be improved. Platinum/polypyrrole (PPy) nanotubes have emerged as promising catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) due to their high surface area and good electrocatalytic activity. Furthermore, the nitrogen atoms within the chemical structure of PPy nanotubes are expected to improve their durability.In this study, we investigated the performance and durability of Pt catalysts during ORR by decorating different carbon-based materials with Pt nanoparticles. The catalytic activity and durability were analyzed using the rotation ring-disk electrode (RRDE) technique. We also examined the influence of the different supports on the electrochemical degradation of the catalysts.Our results showed that Pt/PPy nanotubes exhibited high activity and durability in ORR reactions. We paid particular attention to the chemical changes of the catalysts' surfaces, including both the metal and support components, during the ex-situ electrochemical measurements. The surface of the catalysts was characterized using photoelectron X-ray spectroscopy (XPS), synchrotron radiation photoelectron spectroscopy (SRPES), and near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) analysis before and after electrochemical degradation. Based on our findings, we proposed degradation mechanisms of the Pt/PPy nanotubes catalysts.In addition, we tested the Pt/PPy nanotubes catalysts in fuel cells and observed their high performance. These findings suggest that Pt/PPy nanotubes catalysts can serve as durable and effective catalysts for ORR reactions, even under harsh conditions. Further research is needed to optimize the synthesis conditions and operating parameters of these catalysts to improve their performance and durability.

Enhanced generation of oxysulfur radicals by the BiOBr/Montmorillonite activated sulfite system: Performance and mechanism

The easily synthesized, cost-effective, and stable photocatalysts for sulfite activation are always required for the enhancement of organic contaminants degradation. Herein, the facile coprecipitation synthesis of Bismuth oxybromide (BiOBr)/Montmorillonite (MMT) was reported, which could activate sulfite (SO32−/HSO3−) under sunlight and accelerate the catalytic performance more effectively than pristine BiOBr. After adding sulfite to the photocatalysis system, the photodegradation efficiency of atrazine (ATZ) achieved 73.7% ± 1.5% after 5 min and 94.4% ± 1.6% after 30 min of sunlight irradiation with BiOBr/MMT. The BiOBr/MMT-sulfite system also presented remarkable photocatalytic performance to eliminate various contaminants, including ciprofloxacin, sulfadiazine, tetracycline, and carbamazepine. The various features of the photocatalyst materials were studied, including their surface morphology, structure, optical properties, and composition. The results illustrated that by adding MMT, the bandgap of the pristine BiOBr was reduced and the surface area was increased, which led to an increased ability to adsorb materials. Results of various influence factors showed this enhanced system had satisfactory and stable removal performance of ATZ in the pH range of 3.0–6.5, but HPO42− had a strong negative effect on the system performance. Oxysulfur radicals (SO5·- and SO4·-), h+, and 1O2 were discovered as the prevailing active species in the BiOBr/MMT-sulfite system. The proposed degradation mechanism of this photocatalyst-enhanced system revealed that sulfite adsorption on the surface of the photocatalyst played a vital role during the initial phase, and the degradation pathway of ATZ was discussed. This study provides a new synthesis strategy of a photocatalyst for sulfite activation and expands the potential uses of Bi-based photocatalysts in degrading difficult-to-remove organic pollutants.

A closer look at the corrosion of steel liner embedded in concrete

Containment wall of nuclear power plants is an example of a concrete structure enveloping a steel liner plate. In this research, the situations observed in connection with liner failures were investigated, namely the presence of a piece of wood (foreign matter) and a delamination gap between steel liner and concrete, with the purpose to study and define the corrosion mechanism of the steel liner plate and identify which factors promote or impede the occurrence of corrosion.Specimens were concrete slabs containing a steel plate, an inlay to modify the conditions at the steel surface, and electrodes for electrochemical measurements. The inlays represented “normal” concrete, low-pH concrete, a piece of wood, and a delamination gap between concrete and steel, and the same systems supplemented with chlorides. The results from two-year tests with wetting-drying cycles revealed localized corrosion in steel underneath the piece of wood, close to the inlay perimeter. The attack could be explained mainly by the mechanism of crevice corrosion. In contrast, no corrosion attack of steel liner could be detected in specimens with the delamination gap. The results from the experiments and steel liner characterization are provided in this paper, together with the reasoning behind the proposed degradation mechanism.

Investigation of the Degradation Mechanism of SiC MOSFET Subjected to Multiple Stresses.

The performance requirements for power devices in airborne equipment are increasingly demanding, while environmental and working stresses are becoming more diverse. The degradation mechanisms of devices subjected to multiple stresses become more complex. Most proposed degradation mechanisms and models in current research only consider a single stress, making it difficult to describe the correlation between multiple stresses and the correlation of failures. Then, a multi-physical field coupling model based on COMSOL is proposed. The influence relationship between temperature, moisture, electrical load, and vibration during device operation is considered, and a three-dimensional finite element model is built to investigate the multi-stress degradation mechanism under multi-physical field coupling. The simulation results show that, compared with single-stress models, the proposed multi-stress coupled model can more accurately simulate the degradation process of SiC MOSFET. This provides references for improving the reliability design of power device packaging.

Low-Cost Graphene-Based Composite Electrodes for Electrochemical Oxidation of Phenolic Dyes

Electrochemical removal of organic pollutants represents an attractive methodology in water depollution. The key challenges for researchers comprise finding simple, affordable electrode materials with satisfactory efficiency in all ranges of pollutant concentration. Electrochemical oxidation of a mixture of phenol-based dyes: bromocresol green (BCG), cresol red (CR), and thymol blue (TB), in sulphate medium, at total concentration not exceeding 15 ppm, has been performed using simply prepared, low-cost composite electrodes, based on graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) and metallic oxides (TiO2 and SnO2) loaded on stainless steel substrate: GNP@SS, SnO2/GNP@SS, and TiO2/GNP@SS. Electrodes were characterised by XRD, FTIR, and electrochemical techniques. The degradation kinetics of initial dyes was tracked with UPLC and GC-MS chromatography for 6 h, at a current density of 10 mA/cm2. GC-MS analysis of the degradation products revealed oxidised aromatic compounds as the main products, while TOC analysis confirmed a total mineralisation extent in the range of 30–35%. The proposed degradation mechanism involves the attack of OH-radical, as the main oxidising agent, to the hydroxyl oxygens of dye phenolic rings. Obtained results provide useful information for the further development of affordable laboratory-scale and industrial systems for the complete removal of phenol-based compounds.

G-C3N4 supported Ag/AgCl@MIL-88A MOF based triple composites for highly efficient diuron photodegradation under visible LED light irradiation

In this work, a series of g-C3N4 supported Ag/AgCl doped MIL-88A composites were synthesized and characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV–vis DRS), and photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL). The photocatalytic performances of as-prepared composites were examined by the photodegradation of diuron (DRN), which is used as an herbicide in agriculture. The composites exhibit exceptional visible-light photocatalytic activities for photodegradation of DRN with complete degradation within 60 min in the absence of oxidants. However, in the presence of H2O2 or persulfate, complete degradation of DRN was achieved in 15 min and 30 min, respectively. The photocatalyst also gave very high conversions in water containing dissolved inorganic salts and natural organic matter (NOM). The Ag/AgCl@MIL-88A/g-C3N4 composite retained excellent photocatalytic properties after repeated use. Radical trapping experiments revealed that the most important reactive species in the photodegradation were O2−• and h+. Role of active radicals were discussed via proposed degradation mechanism for the degradation of DRN in the presence of MIL-88A/g-C3N4 and Ag/AgCl@MIL-88A/g-C3N4.

Trends and thresholds on bacterial degradation of bisphenol-A endocrine disruptor - a concise review.

Bisphenol-A (BPA) is a monomer found in polycarbonate plastics, food cans, and other everyday chemicals; this monomer and its counterparts are widely used, culminating in its presence in water, soil, sediment, and the atmosphere. Furthermore, because of its estrogenic and genotoxic properties, it has been acknowledged as an endocrine disruptor; contamination of BPA in the environment is becoming a growing concern, and ways to effectively mitigate BPA from the environment are currently explored. Hence, the focal point of the review is to collate the bacterial degradation of BPA with the proposed degradation mechanism, explicitly focusing on researches published between 2017 and 2022. BPA breakdown is dependent primarily on bacterial metabolism, although numerous factors influence its fate in the environment. The metabolic routes for BPA breakdown in crucial bacterial strains were postulated, sourced on the transformed metabolite-intermediates perceived through degradation; enzymes and genes associated with the bacterial degradation of BPA have also been included in this review. This review will be momentous to generate a conceptual strategy and stimulate the progress on bacterial mitigation of BPA as a path to a sustainable cleaner environment.

Synthesis, Characterization and Photocatalytic Activity of CoFe2O4/Fe2O3 Dispersed in Mesoporous KIT-6.

The present work aimed to synthesize and characterize a solid based on CoFe2O4/Fe2O3-KIT-6 and evaluate its performance in the photocatalytic degradation of the remazol red ultra RGB dye. By analyzing XRD, N2 physisorption, and Mössbauer results, it was possible to identify that the desired CoFe2O4/Fe2O3 phase was achieved, which maintained its structural properties. The FTIR-pyridine indicated the presence of Lewis acid sites, while TPD-CO2 showed a large amount of weak basic sites. The band-gap energy indicated that the compound can be applied in photocatalytic degradation under UV/visible light, with the possibility of magnetic separation at the end of the reaction. The photocatalysis results indicated that there was complete degradation of the remazol red ultra RGB dye within 1 h of reaction. Despite the absence of H2O2, the combination of the proposed photocatalyst with the anatase phase (TiO2) showed significant improvements in the degradation process. The proposed mechanism for complete dye degradation indicated that a sequence of radical reactions is necessary, generating oxidant species such as •OH and the final products were CO2 and H2O.

Photodegradation of ciprofloxacin antibiotic in water by using ZnO-doped g-C3N4 photocatalyst

Ciprofloxacin antibiotic (CIP) is one of the antibiotics with the highest rate of antibiotic resistance, if used and managed improperly, can have a negative impact on the ecosystem. In this research, ZnO modified g-C3N4 photocatalyst was prepared and applied for the decomposition of CIP antibiotic compounds in water. The removal performance of CIP by using ZnO/g-C3N4 reached 93.8% under pH 8.0 and an increasing amount of catalyst could improve the degradation performance of the pollutant. The modified ZnO/g-C3N4 completely oxidized CIP at a low concentration of 1 mg L−1 and the CIP removal efficiency slightly decreases (around 13%) at a high level of pollutant (20 mg L−1). The degradation rate of CIP by doped sample ZnO/g-C3N4 was 4.9 times faster than that of undoped g-C3N4. The doped catalyst ZnO/g-C3N4 also displayed high reusability for decomposition of CIP with 89.8% efficiency remaining after 3 cycles. The radical species including ·OH, ·O2− and h+ are important in the CIP degradation process. In addition, the proposed mechanism for CIP degradation by visible light-assisted ZnO/g-C3N4 was claimed.

A kinetic-mechanistic study of cyanide degradation which can be contained in mining tailings dams using a divided electrolytic cell

Cyanidation is considered the most employed process to recover precious metals such as silver and gold. However, cyanide containing wastes can be hazardous for the environment. Therefore, the soil electroremediation technique was systematically studied to eliminate/degrade the cyanide contained in mining tailing dams using an electrolytic cell with cationic separator and cheap-stable carbon electrodes. The extent and kinetics of cyanide degradation was firstly analyzed in synthetic solutions using the electrolytic cell at different current density, ionic conductivity, and cyanide concentration. The electrolytic system was also evaluated for the treatment of a sample obtained from a mining tailing dam containing cyanide. The results revealed that 100 % of cyanide can be degraded from synthetic solutions containing 200 ppm CN– at 60 A/m2, 0.25 M NaOH and room temperature. It was also found that 100 % of cyanide can be degraded from the real samples obtained from a Mexican mining tailing dam. The kinetic analysis revealed that cyanide degradation can occur through two pathways: a) in the case of tests containing 500 and 800 ppm NaCN, the rate determining step of the cyanide degradation to cyanate species follows a first order reaction with respect to the cyanide ions, and b) when the tests are carried out with 200 ppm NaCN, the same first order reaction controls the process kinetics from 0 to 30 min, while at t > 60 min, the rate determining step for cyanide degradation is modified and limited by the occurrence of parasite reactions. The proposed mechanism for cyanide degradation is also consistent with the thermodynamic calculations. The results also revealed that complete cyanide electro-degradation can be achieved with a current efficiency of 100 %.

Dependence of adhesion on degradation mechanisms of ethylene co-vinyl acetate encapsulants over the lifetime of photovoltaic modules

The long-term reliability of encapsulation has a critical impact on the overall cost and effectiveness of photovoltaic modules. An often overlooked but important element of this reliability concerns adhesive degradation of the encapsulant, which results in delamination. This work critically examines the degradation mechanisms – deacetylation, β-scission, and hydrolytic depolymerization – primarily responsible for adhesion loss in ethylene co-vinyl acetate (EVA) encapsulants to provide evidence and clarity regarding the contribution of these mechanisms to the adhesive degradation over the lifetime of a module. EVA samples obtained from mini-modules exposed in two sets of controlled, accelerated conditions – with and without ultraviolet (UV) radiation – are characterized to find specific evidence for the proposed degradation mechanisms. The mini-modules were exposed up to 10,000 h, which represents up to 15–20 years in the field. Results affirm that initially, deacetylation dominates the degradation before scission takes over, followed by hydrolytic depolymerization. Additional analysis highlights the climacteric interdependency between deacetylation and hydrolytic depolymerization as it relates to eventual delamination, where deacetylation products catalyze interfacial hydrolysis reactions. Furthermore, effects occurring at a given interface are isolated, explicitly providing evidence for how these mechanisms are nonuniform throughout the thickness of the EVA. Results demonstrate that the EVA that interfaces with the glass as opposed to the cell experiences increased levels of degradation, explaining why this initially stronger interface becomes the preferential interface for delamination after longer periods of exposure. Additionally, elevated temperatures alone are shown to induce limited migration of sodium ions across the glass/EVA interface.

Degradation mechanisms for a-InGaZnO thin-film transistors functioning under simultaneous DC gate and drain biases

Degradation of a-InGaZnO thin-film transistors working under simultaneous DC gate and drain bias stress is investigated, and the corresponding degradation mechanism is proposed and verified. The maximum degradation occurs under the bias stress condition that makes the electric field and electron concentration relatively high at the same time. Trapping of hot electrons in the etching-stop layer under the extended drain electrode is proven to be the underlying mechanism. The observed degradation phenomena, including distortion in the transfer curve on a logarithmic scale and two-slope dependence on gate bias on a linear scale, current crowding in the output curve, and smaller degradation in transfer curves measured under large drain bias, can all be well explained with the proposed degradation mechanism.

Efficient degradation of trimethoprim by catalytic ozonation coupled with Mn/FeOx-functionalized ceramic membrane: Synergic catalytic effect and enhanced anti-fouling performance

In this study, the flat microfiltration ceramic membrane (CM) was modified by wet impregnation method (Mn-Fe-CM) to catalyze ozone (O3) for the oxidative degradation of trimethoprim (TMP). The conventional characterization test showed that the Mn-Fe binary oxides (Mn/FeOx) with the crystal structure of FeMnO3 were successfully loaded on the membrane and the catalytic performance of Mn-Fe-CM for O3 was apparently enhanced as compared to CM. Consequently, compared with O3 oxidation alone, the degradation and mineralization efficiencies of TMP in the O3/Mn-Fe-CM system were both improved and 98.6% of TMP could be removed within 10 min. The degradation efficiency of TMP decreased with the increasing pH and the addition of Cl-、HCO3–、PO43-, while humic acid (HA) exhibited negative effect on the TMP removal. Radical scavenger experiment and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis confirmed that direct oxidation by O3 played an important role in the degradation of TMP, while hydroxyl radical (·OH) and 1O2 also participated. Fe(II) could act as an intermediate to transfer electrons and accelerate the transformation of Mn(III) to Mn(II) and Mn(IV) to Mn(III) during the ozonation process, which definitely strengthened the synergic catalytic effect of Mn-Fe-CM. The proposed degradation mechanism of TMP mainly contained hydroxylation, carbonylation, demethoxylation and deamination. Due to the strong catalytic ozonation performance for organic pollutants degradation, the O3/Mn-Fe-CM system revealed better anti-membrane fouling ability, strong cyclic usage performance and high applicability for the actual surface water treatment.

A new type of degradation phenomena featured with increased subthreshold swing and threshold voltage after negative gate bias stress (NBS) is observed for amorphous InGaZnO (a-IGZO) thin-film transistors (TFTs), which can recover in a short time. After comparing with the degradation phenomena under negative bias illumination stress (NBIS), positive bias stress (PBS), and positive bias illumination stress (PBIS), degradation mechanisms under NBS is proposed to be the generation of singly charged oxygen vacancies () in addition to the commonly reported doubly charged oxygen vacancies (). Furthermore, the NBS degradation phenomena can only be observed when the transfer curves after NBS are measured from the negative gate bias to the positive gate bias direction due to the fast recovery of under positive gate bias. The proposed degradation mechanisms are verified by TCAD simulation.

Liquid Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry Analysis of Effluent Water from PFSA Membrane Fuel Cells Operated at OCV

Perfluoroalkylsulfonic acid (PFSA) ionomer membranes degrade under accelerated testing conditions such as open circuit voltage (OCV). Fluoride release rate is commonly used for evaluating the membrane degradation rate; however, many proposed degradation mechanisms should result in the release of small molecule polymer fragments. Liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS) methods are well suited to analyze for these fragments and provide insight into the degradation reactions. Accelerated OCV durability tests were conducted on membrane electrode assemblies made with 3M Ionomer ™ or Nafion™ XL membranes. Effluent water was analyzed for fluoride, sulfate, and trifluoroacetic acid by ion chromatography (IC) and other polymer fragments by LC/MS. The detection of partially hydrogenated side chain fragments and long chain dicarboxylic acids suggest hydrogen atoms play a significant role in these reactions. The results of this study show the possibility that more than one reaction may occur at the tertiary fluoride on the polymer backbone. The presence of a tertiary fluoride on the backbone and side chain of the Nafion™ XL membranes allows for these reactions in more than one location on this polymer. Performance loss for the Nafion™ XL samples during these tests is consistent with adsorption of ionomer fragments on the catalyst surface.

Secondary Organic Aerosol Formation from Nitrophenols Photolysis under Atmospheric Conditions

Nitrophenols are important products of the aromatic compounds photooxidation and play a considerable role in urban chemistry. Nitrophenols are important components of agricultural biomass burning that could influence the climate. The formation of secondary organic aerosol from the direct photolysis of nitrophenols was investigated for the first time in a quartz glass simulation chamber under simulated solar radiation. The results from these experiments indicate rapid SOA formation. The proposed mechanism for the gas-phase degradation of nitrophenols through photolysis shows the formation of biradicals that could react further in the presence of oxygen to form low volatile highly oxygenated compounds responsible for secondary organic aerosol formation. The inhibiting effect of NOx and the presence of an OH radical scavenger on the aerosol formation were also studied. For 2-nitrophenol, significant aerosol formation yields were observed in the absence of an OH radical scavenger and NOx, varying in the range of 18%–24%. A gas-phase/aerosol partitioning model was applied assuming the presence of only one compound in both phases. A degradation mechanism is proposed to explain the aerosol formation observed in the photolysis of nitrophenols. The atmospheric impact of nitrophenol photolysis is discussed and the importance for atmospheric chemical models is assessed.

Visible Light–Induced Degradation of Inverted Polymer:Nonfullerene Acceptor Solar Cells: Initiated by the Light Absorption of ZnO Layer

Power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of polymer solar cells (PSCs) have exceeded 18% in the last few years. Stability has therefore become the next most important issue before commercialization. Herein, the degradation behaviors of the inverted PM6:IT‐4F (PBDB‐T‐2F:3,9‐bis(2‐methylene‐((3‐(1,1‐dicyanomethylene)‐6,7‐difluoro)‐indanone))‐5,5,11,11‐tetrakis(4‐hexylphenyl)‐dithieno[2,3‐d:2′,3′‐d′]‐s‐indaceno[1,2‐b:5,6‐b′]dithiophene) solar cells with different ZnO layers are systematically investigated. The PCE decay rates of the cells and the photobleaching process of the IT‐4F containing organic films on ZnO surface are directly correlated with the light‐absorption ability of the ZnO layer in the visible light range, indicating that photochemical decomposition of IT‐4F is initiated by the light absorption of ZnO layer. By analyzing the products of the aged ZnO/IT‐4F films with matrix‐assisted laser desorption ionization time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry (MALDI‐TOF‐MS), it is confirmed that photochemical reactions at the IT‐4F/ZnO interface include de‐electron‐withdrawing units and dealkylation on the side‐phenyl ring. Hydroxyl radicals generated by the photo‐oxidation of dangling hydroxide by ZnO are confirmed by electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy measurements, which is attributed as the main reason causing the decomposition of IT‐4F. Surface treatment of ZnO with hydroxide and/or hydroxyl radical scavenger is found to be able to improve the stability of the PSCs, which further supports the proposed degradation mechanism.
