Demographic Dividend or Demographic Threat in Pakistan?

Population growth and size have remained the focus of debate for centuries but the recent demographic transition in developing countries has made social scientists take note of the changing age structure of the population as well. As a result of declining population growth and consequent changes in age structure, the proportion of working-age population is increasing in most developing countries. An associated decline in the dependent age population offers a window of opportunity, referred to as the ‘demographic dividend’. Pakistan is also going through the demographic transition, and is experiencing a once-in-a-lifetime demographic dividend as the working-age population bulges and the dependency ratio declines. This paper looks into the demographic dividend being offered to Pakistan and its implications for the country, mainly through three mechanisms: labour supply, savings, and human capital. For economic benefits to materialise, there is a need for policies dealing with education, public health, and those that promote labour market flexibility and provide incentives for investment and savings. On the contrary, if appropriate policies are not formulated, the demographic dividend might, in fact, be a cost, leading to unemployment and an unbearable strain on education, health, and old age security.

The Study on the Effect of Population Age Structure Change on Economic Growth in Chongqing

The data of the sixth population census showed that Chongqing city has already entered the old society. The population age structure showed that the proportion of children continued to decline, the proportion of elderly and the proportion of working-age population kept rising. This article introduces the Cobb-Douglas production function model and internalizes the total dependency ratio, children dependency ratio and old dependency ratio into the labor input factors to expand the model furtherly and analyze the influence of the change of the population age structure on economic growth. The analysis finds that the contribution of the effective supply of labor force to economic growth is very large, and the impact of dependency ratio on economic growth through labor supply is also significant and suggestions can be put forward based on this.

Population Change and Regional Development in China: Insights Based on the 2000 Census

The People's Republic of China conducted its fifth population census in November 2000. This paper draws from that census and recent data to examine national and regional demographic changes in China over the past two decades. Nationally, the impact of fertility decline on rates of population growth, age composition, and household size is investigated. Regional population trends include the rising population share of the eastern region as a result of population growth due to migration and in response to the widening economic gap between coastal and interior China. Demographic differentials between the eastern region and the rest of China (i.e., in proportion of working-age population, household size, sex ratio, and levels of urbanization and educational attainment) suggest that migration is playing an increasingly important role in shaping regional population distribution and that the acceleration of uneven regional development poses a major challenge to policy makers.
