Contrasting water use of two Eucalyptus clones across a precipitation and temperature gradient in Brazil

Eucalyptus plantation productivity has increased 4-fold across Brazil as a result of improved genetic selection and intensive silviculture. However, the rate of productivity improvements is slowing and suggests increased production will require planting in areas that have never been previously planted with Eucalyptus with uncertain impacts on local water supplies. This study compares water use and water use efficiency between a drought resistant (E. grandis × E. camaldulensis) and high productivity Eucalyptus clone (E. urophylla) across three sites (dry, mesic and wet) spanning a two-fold precipitation gradient (~600–1350 mm y−1) in Brazil. Each site included a 30% reduced rainfall treatment for each clone to investigate within site response to reduced precipitation. We found that the drought resistant clone used as much or more water than the high productivity clone at all three sites. The drought resistant clone transpired almost 20% percent more water than the high productivity clone at the dry site (3.7 vs. 3.0 m3 y−1) while water use between clones did not differ at the mesic (4.6 vs 4.0 m3 y−1) and wet site (4.0 vs 4.5 m3 y−1). The high productivity clone transpired 54, 46 and 37% of annual precipitation at the dry, mesic and wet sites respectively while the drought resistant clone consumed 67, 47 and 31% of annual precipitation from the dry to the wet site. Although the rain reduction treatments did not impact annual water use for either clone at the dry and mesic sites, there were some differences at a subannual timescale. Rain reduction treatments at the dry site lowered transpiration in the driest, hottest three months for the high productivity clone by 25–32%. Rainfall reduction led to lower water use by the drought resistant clone for only one month during the dry season (18%). The high productivity clone transpired less water (24–26%) in the rainfall reduction treatment at the mesic site during three months and the drought resistant clone transpired 18 and 20% less water in the rainfall reduction treatment during two months. Rainfall reduction reduced annual transpiration by 59% for the high productivity clone at the wet site. Average water use efficiency of the drought resistant clone was almost 70% lower than the high productivity clone at the dry and mesic sites (~5.2 vs. 1.5 kg m−3 y−1) and was due to the combination of low growth and high water use. Higher than expected growth by the drought resistant clone at the wet site resulted in similar water use efficiency between clones (6.3 vs. 5.8 kg m−3 y−1). We discuss potential implications of our findings and highlight several lines of evidence that suggest the drought resistant clone in this study allocates a greater proportion of gross primary productivity below ground allowing it to access deeper reserves of soil water during dry periods. Our results suggest that decisions to plant drought resistant clones in drought prone areas should be carefully considered and also highlight the need for more research on water use and drought tolerance strategies for Eucalyptus clones bred for more arid areas in Brazil.

Soil nutrient availability regulated global carbon use efficiency

Abstract The carbon use efficiency (CUE) is a core ecosystem parameter that determines the proportion of gross primary productivity (GPP) kept by an ecosystem after self-consumption. Its patterns along climates have been investigated to some extents. However, large uncertainty still exists, especially regarding its relationships with soil nutrients. The objective of this study was to evaluate the CUE variations along soil nutrient gradients by utilizing multi-sources of data for the global terrestrial ecosystem. The global terrestrial ecosystem CUE was calculated based on remote sensing modeled ecosystem productivity data, as well as in-situ observation data. The pattern analysis showed that global croplands and grasslands are distributed in nutrient-richer regions than forests. Along waning nutrients, GPP and net primary productivity (NPP) exhibit an overall increasing trend, while CUE declines. Within each biome, GPP and NPP decrease along enhanced nutrients for forests and grasslands, while CUE exhibits an opposite pattern. Based on worldwide collected field plot data, CUE also decreases along a weakened nutrient gradient. The strengthened ecosystem CUE pattern along enhanced nutrients as resulted from both model and field measurements data underscores the foremost significances of nutrients for ecosystem efficiency, also entails more comprehensive incorporations of nutrients in the future modeling studies.

Comparison of Carbon-Use Efficiency Among Different Land-Use Patterns of the Temperate Steppe in the Northern China Pastoral Farming Ecotone

Carbon-use efficiency (CUE) is the proportion of gross primary production converted to net primary production. Changes to CUE strongly influence ecosystem carbon budgets and turnover. Little is known about the response of ecosystem CUE to human-induced land-use change, which limits the accurate evaluation of the environmental influence of large-scale steppe-use changes in northern China. We investigated the components of ecosystem carbon exchange and CUE under three typical steppe-use patterns in Xilinhot, Inner Mongolia. The results showed that CUE in grazing and grazing-excluded steppe were not significantly different (both over 0.7) but were significantly higher than in cultivated steppe (0.57). Ecosystem respiration and its components, including autotrophic respiration (Ra), aboveground respiration, heterotrophic respiration and belowground respiration showed significant negative correlation with CUE. Ra is the most important factor explaining the variation of CUE between different steppe-use patterns (p < 0.001, 97%); Ra change may be the primary factor driving CUE variation between steppe-use patterns. Leaf area index of different grassland-use patterns also showed a significant negative correlation with CUE (p < 0.001, 91%). These findings may help to improve accurate prediction of the environmental and climatic consequences of large-scale land-use change.

The role of mosses in carbon uptake and partitioning in arctic vegetation

The Arctic is already experiencing changes in plant community composition, so understanding the contribution of different vegetation components to carbon (C) cycling is essential in order to accurately quantify ecosystem C balance. Mosses contribute substantially to biomass, but their impact on carbon use efficiency (CUE) - the proportion of gross primary productivity (GPP) incorporated into growth - and aboveground versus belowground C partitioning is poorly known. We used (13) C pulse-labelling to trace assimilated C in mosses (Sphagnum sect. Acutifolia and Pleurozium schreberi) and in dwarf shrub-P. schreberi vegetation in sub-Arctic Finland. Based on (13) C pools and fluxes, we quantified the contribution of mosses to GPP, CUE and partitioning. Mosses incorporated 20 ± 9% of total ecosystem GPP into biomass. CUE of Sphagnum was 68-71%, that of P. schreberi was 62-81% and that of dwarf shrub-P. schreberi vegetation was 58-74%. Incorporation of C belowground was 10 ± 2% of GPP, while vascular plants alone incorporated 15 ± 4% of their fixed C belowground. We have demonstrated that mosses strongly influence C uptake and retention in Arctic dwarf shrub vegetation. They increase CUE, and the fraction of GPP partitioned aboveground. Arctic C models must include mosses to accurately represent ecosystem C dynamics.

Influence of light, temperature and salinity on dissolved organic carbon exudation rates in Zostera marina L.

BackgroundMarine angiosperms, seagrasses, are sentinel species of marine ecosystem health and function. Seagrass carbon budgets provide insight on the minimum requirements needed to maintain this valuable resource. Carbon budgets are a balance between C fixation, growth, storage and loss rates, most of which are well characterized. However, relatively few measurements of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) leaf exudation or rhizodeposition rates exist for most seagrass species. Here I evaluate how eelgrass (Zostera marina L.) DOC exudation is affected by a single factor manipulation (light, temperature or salinity). Eelgrass plants were hydroponically exposed to treatments in experimental chambers (separate leaf and rhizome/root compartments) with artificial seawater medium. Regression analysis of changes in the DOC concentration through time was used to calculate DOC exudation rates.ResultsExudation rates were similar across all treatments in all experiments. For all experiments, pooled leaf DOC exudation ranged between 0.032 and 0.069 mg C gdw-1 h-1, while rhizodeposition ranged between 0.024 and 0.045 mg C gdw-1 h-1. These rates are consistent with previously published values and provide first-order estimates for mechanistic models.ConclusionsZostera marina carbon losses from either leaf exudation or rhizodeposition account for a small proportion of gross primary production (1.2-4.6%) and appear to be insensitive to short-term (e.g., hours to days) environmental variations in chamber experiments. Based on these preliminary experiments, I suggest that Z. marina DOC exudation may be a passive process and not an active transport process.
