Synthesis, Stable Radical Anion and Energy Storage Performance of Pentacene Tetraimides.

Imide functionalization has been widely proved to be an effective approach to enrich optoelectronic properties of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). However, appending multiple imide groups onto linear acenes is still a synthetic challenge. Herein, we demonstrate that by taking advantage of a "breaking and mending" strategy, a linear pentacene tetraimides (PeTI) was synthesized through a three-step sequence started from the naphthalene diimides (NDI). Compared with the parent pentacene, PeTI shows a deeper-lying lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy level, narrower bandgap and better stability. The redox behavior of PeTI was firstly evaluated by generating a stable radical anion specie with the assistance of cobaltocene (CoCp2), and the structure of the electron transfer (ET) complex was confirmed by the X-ray crystallography. Moreover, due to the presence of multiple redox-active sites, we are able to show that the state-of-the-art energy storage performance of the dealkylated PeTI (designated as PeTCTI) in organic potassium ion batteries (OPIBs) as an anode. Our results shed light on the application of multiple imides functionalized linear acenes, and the reported synthetic strategy provides an effective way to get access to longer nanoribbon imides with fascinating electronic properties.

Role of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons with Edge Defects in Explaining Astronomical Infrared Emission Observations

A systematic study was performed on the spectral properties of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with edge defects using harmonic density functional theory calculations. Their potential astronomical relevance was assessed through direct comparison with NIRSpec and MIRI-MRS spectra of the atomic photodissociation region of the Orion Bar from the JWST Early Release Science PDRs4All program. It is found that the astronomical 6.2 μm PAH emission band, including its blue side, is well reproduced by PAHs with edge defects, when taking into account the effects of polarization in the computations, and without a need for PAHs that contain nitrogen. Small neutral PAHs with edge defects explain the blue wing of the 3.3 μm band. A low number of edge defects is required to reproduce the 8.6 and 11.2 μm band profiles, while the 11.0 + 11.2/12.7 μm band intensity ratio is a measure for the number of edge defects. A blind database fit to the Orion Bar spectrum reproduces the 6–15 μm region with an error of 9.9% and shows a clear delineation of charge, with the 6–10 μm PAH bands being carried by PAH cations and the 10–15 μm region by predominantly neutral PAHs. The contribution of anions is negligible. Armchair PAHs fit the 12.7 μm band, simultaneously producing a very weak broad emission feature centered at 3.225 μm. Zigzag PAHs fit the 11.2 μm band. It is concluded that PAHs with a low number of edge defects, in addition to armchair and zigzag PAHs, all contribute to the observed interstellar infrared emission.

Two novel temperature-based topological indices with strong potential to predict physicochemical properties of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons with applications to silicon carbide nanotubes

For a vertex x ∈ V G , the temperature T x of x is defined as T x = d x /n − d x . A topological/graphical index G I is a map GI:∑→R , where ∑ (resp. R ) is the set of chemical graphs (resp. real numbers). Graphical indices are employed in structure-property & structure-activity modeling to predict physicochemical/thermodynamic/bilogical characteristics of a compound. A temperature-based graphical index of a chemical graph G is defined as GI T ≔ ∑edges f(T x , t y ), where f(T x , T y ) is a symmetric 2-variable map. In this paper, we introduce two new novel temperature-based indices known as the reduced reciprocal product-connectivity temperature (RRPT) index and the geometric-arithmetic temperature (GAT) index. The predictive potential of these indices have been investigated by employing them in structure-property modeling of physicochemical properties of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The normal boiling point (bp) and the standard enthalpy of formation ΔHfo are selected as representatives of physicochemical characteristics. Intermolecular & van der Waals kind of interactions have been represented by bp, whereas, ΔHfo advocates for thermal characteristics of a compound. In order to validate the statistical inference, the lower 22 PAHs have been opted as test molecules as their experimental data is also publicly available. We propose a computational method to compute all temperature indices in literature and employ it to compute them for the lower 22 PAHs. Besides all the existing temperature indices, both RRPT & GAT are used in a quality testing to predict bp and ΔHfo for lower PAHs. Our statistical analysis asserts that both RRPT & GAT outperformed all the existing temperature indices for correlating bp and ΔHfo for lower PAHs. Most appropriate data-fitting regression models have been suggested to be linear. Since RRPT has the both of correlation coefficients >0.95, the study implicates its further employability in structure-property modeling. Importantly, our research contributes towards countering proliferation of graphical indices. Applications to well-performing temperature indices to correlate physicochemical characteristics of silicon carbide nanotubes are presented.

Size Isn't Everything: Geometric Tuning in Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons and Its Implications for Carbon Nanodots.

Recent developments in light-emitting carbon nanodots and molecular organic semiconductors have seen renewed interest in the properties of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) as a family. The networks of delocalized π electrons in sp2-hybridized carbon grant PAHs light-emissive properties right across the visible spectrum. However, the mechanistic understanding of their emission energy has been limited due to the ground state-focused methods of determination. This computational chemistry work, therefore, seeks to validate existing rules and elucidate new features and characteristics of PAHs that influence their emissions. Predictions based on (time-dependent) density functional theory account for the full 3-dimensional electronic structure of ground and excited states and reveal that twisting and near-degeneracies strongly influence emission spectra and may therefore be used to tune the color of PAHs and, hence, carbon nanodots. We particularly note that the influence of twisting goes beyond torsional destabilization of the ground-state and geometric relaxation of the excited state, with a third contribution associated with the electric transition dipole. Symmetries and peri-condensation may also have an effect, but this could not be statistically confirmed. In pursuing this goal, we demonstrate that with minimal changes to molecular size, the entire visible spectrum may be spanned by geometric modification alone; we have also provided a first estimate of emission energy for 35 molecules currently lacking published emission spectra as well as clear guidelines for when more sophisticated computational techniques are required to predict the properties of PAHs accurately.

Predictive potential of eigenvalues-based graphical indices for determining thermodynamic properties of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons with applications to polyacenes

For the structure–property modeling of thermodynamic properties of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), this paper explores the effectiveness of a specific class of graphical indices defined based on eigenvalues, also known as valency-spectral graphical indices. The 30 lower PAHs have been selected as test molecules. The heat capacity (Cp) and entropy (So) are the standard choices for characterizing thermodynamic properties due to their close correlation with the thermodynamic properties of a similar nature. A computer-dependent method is proposed to calculate valency-spectral indices of chemical graphs, and it is employed to compute the indices for our test molecules. The statistical inferences reveal an unexpected finding for the Estrada harmonic energy, a less familiarized spectral descriptor within the research community, outperforming all the existing descriptors, followed by the positive & negative inertia indices. The Estrada harmonic energy achieved the highest mean correlation coefficient of ρ>0.99. On the other hand, well-studied descriptors such as Laplacian energy and adjacency energy still maintained their effectiveness in correlating the thermodynamic properties of PAHs; however, they were significantly outperformed by the Estrada harmonic energy. The three best valency-spectral indices are employed in the structure–property modeling of thermodynamic properties of linear polyacenes.

Tunable third‐order NLO properties of acene derivatives with molecular structural modification

AbstractThe substitution of heteroatoms and the expansion of π‐conjugated units have significant effects on the photoelectric properties of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). In this study, based on the experimental molecule PBC, 10 acene derivatives containing the pyrrole group were designed by three strategies: (1) changing the connection position of the pyrrole group, (2) exchanging the position of the N atom, and (3) increasing the length of the π‐linker. Density functional theory (DFT) was used to optimize the molecular geometric structure. Time‐dependent density functional theory (TD‐DFT) was used to calculate the relevant parameters of the excited states. The results show that both of the pyrrole group and the N atom in the para‐position, and the addition of the π‐linker can reduce the energy gap, cause redshift of the linear absorption peak, and increase the two photon absorption (TPA) cross‐section. The analyses of the charge density difference (CDD) and the charge‐transfer matrix (CTM) proved that the electron transfer is mainly concentrated in the π‐linker. Moreover, the participation of the multi‐ring skeleton on both sides decreases gradually with the increase of the length of the π‐linker. The length of the π‐linker changes the dominant transition channel and intramolecular charge‐transfer (ICT) characteristics of TPA, thus affecting the transition dipole moments and nonlinear absorption properties. The second hyperpolarizability of the designed molecule PBI5‐p5 is also significantly superior to that of similar materials reported. It is expected that the above molecular design strategies and comprehensive analysis of nonlinear optical (NLO) properties could provide theoretical support for the research on acene derivatives.

Precise synthesis of BN embedded perylene diimide oligomers for fast-charging and long-life potassium-organic batteries.

Replacing the C[double bond, length as m-dash]C bond with an isoelectronic BN unit is an effective strategy to tune the optoelectronic properties of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). However, precise control of the BN orientations in large PAH systems is still a synthetic challenge. Herein, we demonstrate a facile approach for the synthesis of BN embedded perylene diimide (PDI) nanoribbons, and the polarization orientations of the BN unit were precisely regulated in the two PDI trimers. These BN doped PDI oligomers show great potential as organic cathodes for potassium-ion batteries (PIBs). In particular, trans-PTCDI3BN exhibits great improvement in voltage potential, reversible capacities (ca. 130 mA h g-1), superior rate performance (19 s to 69% of the maximum capacity) and ultralong cyclic stability (nearly no capacity decay over 30 000 cycles), which are among those of state-of-the-art organic-based cathodes. Our synthetic approach stands as an effective way to access large PAHs with precisely controlled BN orientations, and the BN doping strategy provides useful insight into the development of organic electrode materials for secondary batteries.

Magnetic solid phase extraction coupled to HPLC-UV for highly sensitive analysis of mono-hydroxy polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in urine

BackgroundAs a common pollutant, the carcinogenic properties of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons have garnered considerable attention. Trace metabolites of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons can be detected in urine as a non-invasively approach to monitor the exposure level. Nonetheless, the urine samples have the disadvantages of being large in volume and containing numerous impurities. Given the growing demand to study metabolites with low abundance and potential biomarkers, there is a pressing need for a preconcentration and high-throughput technique for effectively handling complex liquid samples. ResultsPolystyrene-coated magnetic nanoparticles were used to establish a novel magnetic extraction method for monohydroxy polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in urine samples. Polystyrene magnetic nanoparticles are an ideal absorbent for solid-phase extraction. After the material was mixed with the sample and adsorbed the target analyte, the analytes on the material were eluted and quantified using high-performance liquid chromatography. Influencing factors were optimized, and the proposed method achieved desirable sensitivity in analyzing low-abundance metabolites in large volumes of complex urine samples. The recoveries of intra-day and inter-day were 78.0–118.0 % and 81.0 %–115.0 %, respectively. The intra-day and inter-day reproducibility were less than 4.5 % and 8.6 %, respectively. The limits of detection were in the range of 0.009–0.041 ng mL−1, and the limits of quantification were in the range of 0.030–0.135 ng mL−1. Significance and noveltyThe application of reusable polystyrene-coated magnetic solid-phase nanoparticles as adsorbents makes the extraction of monohydroxy polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from urine samples economical and environmentally benign. The proposed method is simple, sensitive, and efficient compared to existing techniques. The nanoparticles are easy to prepare, showing potential for rapid screening of complex bulk bio-samples in batches with high efficiency and low budget.

Hierarchical porous MOFs@COFs-based molecular trap solid-phase microextraction for efficient capture of PAHs and adsorption mechanisms

In view of the serious carcinogenic, teratogenic and mutagenic properties of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which cause significant harm to human beings and the environment. Therefore, developing rapid adsorption and efficient analytical methods are research topic with practical significance. Herein, an innovative MOFs@COFs-based molecular trap materials were prepared with hierarchical porous core–shell structure and used as solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fiber coating, which combined with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to achieve the efficient separation, capture, and detection for 7 PAHs in real samples. The possible adsorption mechanism was systematically verified and explained. Under the optimized conditions, the method developed in this experiment had a wide linear range (0.005–400 µg·L−1) with a good linear correlation coefficient (R2 > 0.9984), low detection limits (0.002–0.405 µg·L−1, S/N = 3) and low quantification limits (0.005–1.351 µg·L−1, S/N = 10). The relative standard deviations of individual fibers and different batches of fibers were 0.26–3.64% and 0.40–5.91%, respectively. Besides, the fiber showed higher enrichment capacity and extraction efficiency for PAHs compared to commercial SPME fibers and other material fibers, and exhibited excellent acid-base stability and reproducibility. This work provided a favorable synthetic pathway for the preparation of MOFs@COFs composites by layer-modified assembly synthesis strategy, showed excellent practical applicability as a SPME fiber coating combined with HPLC, and could be realized to provide technical support for future studies on the separation, adsorption, and analysis of PAHs in the petrochemical industrial zone of the Yellow River Basin.

A Study on the Energy of Graphs and Its Applications

In this paper, we dealt with two very well-known eigenvalue-based molecular descriptors such as the energy of graph ( E ( G ) ) and Estrada index ( E E ( G ) ) . We test their predictive potential of some physicochemical properties of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons using a data set of benzenoid hydrocarbons. We stabilized a relation of these two indices with some well-known degree-based topological indices such as the first Zagreb index, second Zagreb index, F-index, Randić index, Reciprocal Randić index, Atom bond connectivity index, sum-connectivity index, Geometric-arithmetic, Harmonic index, symmetric division deg index, and redefined Zagreb index.

On Molecular Descriptors of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon

A variety of graphical invariants have been described and tested, offering lots of applications in the fields of nanochemistry, computational networks, and different scientific research areas. One commonly studied group of invariants is the topological index, which allows research on the chemical, biological, and physical properties of a chemical structure. Topological indices are numerical quantities that can be used to describe the properties of the molecular graph. In this article, we draw from the analytically closed formulas of molecular structures of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons by calculating temperature-based topological indices. Our results in this paper may be useful to better understand many physical and chemical properties of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

Theoretical Study on Non-Linear Optics Properties of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons and the Effect of Their Intercalation with Carbon Nanotubes.

Results of a theoretical study devoted to comparing NLO (non-linear optics) responses of derivatives of tetracene, isochrysene, and pyrene are reported. The static hyperpolarizability β, the dipole moment μ, the HOMO and LUMO orbitals, and their energy gap were calculated using the CAM-B3LYP density functional combined with the cc-pVDZ basis set. The para-disubstituted NO2-tetracene-N(CH3)2 has the highest NLO response, which is related to a large intramolecular charge transfer. Adding vinyl groups to the para-disubstituted NO2-tetracene-N(CH3)2 results in an increase in the NLO responses. We further investigated the effect of the intercalation of various push-pull molecules inside an armchair single-walled carbon nanotube. The intercalation leads to increased NLO responses, something that depends critically on the position of the guest molecule and/or on functionalization of the nanotube by donor and attractor groups.

On Degree Based Topological Properties of the Molecular Structure of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons

There is a strong correlation between the properties of their molecular structure based on medical experiments. The molecular structure of drugs contains all of the information for investigating their chemical, physical and biological properties. These properties can be determined using a theoretical descriptor tool known as topological indices. In this paper, we compute some of the mean Sombor indices of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons that our results in this paper may be useful to better understand the many physical and chemical properties of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

Revisiting the superaromatic stabilization energy as a local aromaticity index for excited states

AbstractThe graph theory of aromaticity is a useful framework for analyzing the aromatic properties of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. We present here the magnetically based superaromatic stabilization energy (m‐SSE) as a local aromaticity index and validate it against its topologically based counterpart t‐SSE. By comparing to DFT‐computed aromaticity indices of triplet state excited polybenzenoid hydrocarbons, we find that semi‐quantitative agreement can be reached by using the variable method to account for bond‐length alternation. The m‐SSE can further be separated into orbital and circuit contributions to gain insight into the basis of the aromatic properties of individual rings. Fully automated algorithms for calculating both m‐SSE and t‐SSE are now available in the COULSON package. We envision that these graph theoretical aromaticity indices will be of great use to the community to analyze the local aromaticity of excited states.

SFR estimations from z = 0 to z = 0.9

Context. The star formation rate (SFR) is a key ingredient for studying the formation and evolution of galaxies. Being able to obtain accurate estimations of the SFR, for a wide range of redshifts, is crucial for building and studying galaxy evolution paths over cosmic time. Aims. Based on a statistical sample of galaxies, the aim of this paper is to constrain a set of SFR calibrators that are able to work in a large redshift range, from z = 0 to z = 0.9. Those calibrators will help to homogenize SFR estimations of star-forming galaxies and to remove any possible biases from the study of galaxy evolution. Methods. Using the VIMOS Public Extragalactic Redshift Survey (VIPERS), we estimated a set of SFR based on photometric and spectroscopic data. We used, as estimators, photometric bands from ultraviolet (UV) to mid-infrared (mid-IR), and the spectral lines Hβ, [O II]λ3727, and [O III]λ5007. Assuming a reference SFR obtained from the spectral energy distribution reconstructed with Code Investigating GALaxy Emission (CIGALE), we estimated the reliability of each band as an SFR tracer. We used the GALEX-SDSS-WISE Legacy Catalog (GSWLC, z < 0.3) to trace the dependence of these SFR calibrators with redshift. Results. The far and near UV (FUV and NUV, respectively), u-band and 24 μm bands, as well as LTIR, are found to be good SFR tracers up to z ∼ 0.9 with a strong dependence on the attenuation prescription used for the bluest bands (scatter of SFR of 0.26, 0.14, 0.15, 0.23, and 0.24 dex for VIPERS, and 0.25, 0.24, 0.09, 0.12, and 0.12 dex for GSWLC). The 8 μm band provides only a rough estimate of the SFR as it depends on metallicity and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon properties (scatter of 0.23 dex for VIPERS). We estimated the scatter of rest-frame luminosity estimations from CIGALE to be 0.26, 0.14, 0.12, 0.15, and 0.20 dex for FUV, NUV, ugriz, Ks, and 8–24 μm-LTIR. At intermediate redshift, the Hβ line is a reliable SFR tracer (scatter of 0.19 dex) and the [O II]λ3727 line gives an equally good estimation when the metallicity from the R23 parameter is taken into account (0.17 for VIPERS and 0.20 dex for GSWLC). A calibration based on [O III] retrieves the SFR only when additional information such as the metallicity or the ionization parameter of galaxies are used (0.26 for VIPERS and 0.20 dex for GSWLC), diminishing its usability as a direct SFR tracer. Based on rest-frame luminosities estimated with CIGALE, we propose our own set of calibrations from FUV, NUV, u-band, 8, 24 μm, LTIR, Hβ, [O II], and [O III].

One Fluorophore-Two Sensing Films: Hydrogen-Bond Directed Formation of a Quadruple Perylene Bisimide Stack.

Elaborately designed π-stacked molecular aggregates are significant for modulation of photophysical properties of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Herein, a double hydrogen-bonds trussed di(pyridyl)pyrrole-perylene bisimide (HDPP-PBI) was designed and its dimerization behavior was studied. HDPP-PBI tends to form a quadruple PBI stack with a dimerization constant of ∼5.56×106 M-1 . The dimerization was ascribed to synergistic intramolecular double hydrogen-bonds formation and intermolecular π-π stacking. Addition of CF3 COOH, a hydrogen bond blocker, promotes the dimer to monomer transition. Accordingly, two distinct fluorescent films were prepared by drop-casting of the dimerized or the monomeric HDPP-PBI onto a substrate surface. Interestingly, the less-emissive PBI quadruple stack-based film showed a turn on response to acetone vapor, while the highly emissive HDPP-PBI-based film exhibited fluorescence quenching upon exposure to triethylamine vapor. We believe that the discovered synergistic effect in the PBI aggregates would enlighten the design of new PAHs aggregates with defined structures.

Toward More Efficient Organic Semiconductors: The Relationship between Morphology, Charge Transport, and Photophysical Properties

In recent years, materials science has been facing an electronics revolution due to the fast progress in the development of organic semiconductors. In this context, the current study attempts to tune the photophysical properties of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by engineering their morphology and size. Four families of PAHs─oligoacenes, circulenes, triangulenes, and sunflowers─are considered to investigate the evolution of their optoelectronic properties with size and morphology. Based on the calculated properties, several quantitative structure–property relationships have been established for the prediction of reorganization energy. It is found that morphologies like circulene and triangulene that are less aromatic and have smaller energy gaps achieve smaller reorganization energy and thus are better candidates for charge transport materials. For all considered PAHs, the excitation energies of the strongest low-lying electronic transition (β peak) span in the visible region and demonstrate the size tunability. The β peak of some oligoacene and triangulene families exhibits plasmonic behavior that is important for the fabrication of lighter optical devices compared with metallic systems. We have also explored the effect of sulfur heteroatoms on the structural, electronic, and optical properties of circulene and sunflower morphologies.

Correlation Ability of Degree-Based Topological Indices for Physicochemical Properties of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons with Applications

Several chemical and medical experimentation reveals a dependence of physicochemical and biological properties of a compound on its molecular structure. Molecular/topological descriptors/indices retrieve this dependence by employing mathematical/statistical tools to generate quantitative structure property/activity relationship (QSAR/QSPR) models. QSAR/QSPR models are regression models which theoretically relate a physicochemical/biological property to a molecular descriptor. By converting a compound to a chemical graph, graph-theoretic topological indices use algorithmic graph theory to generate QSAR/QSPR models. Degree-related molecular indices have been well-known for correlating better with certain physicochemical characteristics of compounds. In this paper, we conduct a comparative analysis to put forward the best degree-based index for correlating with physicochemical characteristics of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Two different computational techniques have been put forward and then used to conduct our comparative analysis. Our comparative testing generates several favorable and unexpected conclusions as the well-known indices such as the augmented Zagreb index, the atom-bond connectivity index, the geometric arithmetic index deliver relatively poor performance. Moreover, exceptional performance of the generalized variants of Randić and sum-connectivity indices is somehow unexpected as they significantly outperform the well-studied and well-researched degree-based indices. This warrants to study further the general Randić and sum-connectivity indices for QSAR/QSPR models. Applications to certain families of carbon polyhex aromatic nanotubes are reported.

Crystal Engineering of Binary Organic Eutectics: Significant Improvement in the Physicochemical Properties of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons via the Computational and Mechanochemical Discovery of Composite Materials

Derivatives of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are widely used in optoelectronic materials. However, the poor solubility of unfunctionalized PAHs represents a challenge for the continued application of these compounds in emerging technologies. For organic compounds bearing one or more functional groups capable of engaging in directional hydrogen or halogen-bonding interactions, the crystal engineering toolkit currently offers many routes for optimizing the solid-state properties of these compounds. Such efforts typically lead to the discovery of periodic crystal forms that display strong adhesive intermolecular forces between the molecular fragments. By contrast, the crystal engineering of organic eutectic composites is relatively unexplored and poorly understood. Here, we report the mechanosynthesis and experimental characterization of the properties of three eutectic composites of pyrene (PYR) and anthracene (ANTH) that were discovered using the coformer bisphenol A (BPA) or phenothiazine (PTZ). The resulting eutectic composites (PYR-BPA, PYR-PTZ, and ANTH-PTZ) display significant melting point depressions ranging from 19 to 51 °C relative to the melting point of the PAH. The equilibrium solubilities of the composite materials were also observed to be 2–5 times greater than that of the PAH. The crystal engineering of eutectic solid forms is currently hampered by the lack of reliable empirical or theoretical tools for predicting their formation. A weighted Monte Carlo simulation was used to estimate the mixing energies and binding modes of a limited set of molecular pairs, leading to temperature-dependent interaction parameters that show promise in the selection of coformers with a high likelihood of forming eutectic composites. Complementary dispersion-corrected density functional theory (DFT-D) calculations on a set of PYR and ANTH composite models reveal that organic eutectic composites are not driven to form on the basis of favorable thermodynamics as evidenced by an average interaction energy of 2.60 kJ mol–1 across the series. Synthon incompatibility and molecular shape mismatch appear to be important factors to consider in targeting eutectic solid forms. This work paves the way for the systematic crystal engineering of organic eutectic solid forms with tunable physicochemical properties using a synergistic computational modeling and mechanosynthesis approach.
