Laboratory assessment of the impact of modified asphalt binder on mechanical properties of grouted macadam mixtures under various performance conditions

ABSTRACT Grouted Macadam (GM) mixtures are used for pavement coatings due to their strong load-bearing capacity and rutting resistance. However, weak asphalt-cement interface bonding reduces crack resistance performance of these mixtures. This study aimed to enhance this adhesion through implementing TEGO Addibit L300 additive at concentrations of 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4% by weight of asphalt binder. Various tests assessed additive’s impact on asphalt binder properties, including penetration, softening point, and kinematic viscosity. Adhesion properties were evaluated through sessile drop and semi-circular bending bonding strength tests. Additionally, GM mixture performance was assessed with mechanical tests such as 3-point bending strength, indirect tensile strength, and Marshall stability, considering two conditions: samples tested immediately after a 28-day curing period (non pre-conditioned samples), and samples tested after the same period followed by exposure to 60 ℃ for 16 h (pre-conditioned samples). Results revealed that the adhesion capacity of the asphalt binder significantly affected GM mixture performance in both conditions. Addition of TEGO Addibit L300 enhanced ductility and fracture energy by 53.9% and 45.2%, respectively, in non pre-conditioned samples. In pre-conditioned samples, the additive increased indirect tensile strength by up to 12.1%. The optimal dosage for improving GM materials performance was determined to be 0.3%.

Investigation of Surface Modification of Bagasse Fibers: Performance of Asphalt Binders/Mixtures with Bagasse Fibers

The influence of surface modification on the properties of bagasse fibers and asphalt binders/mixtures was investigated. Bagasse fibers were modified by single, binary, and ternary methods with hydrochloric acid, sodium hydroxide, and sodium chlorite, respectively. The physical and chemical properties of bagasse fibers were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and an adsorption test, respectively. The rheological properties of asphalt binders with bagasse fibers or lignin fibers were analyzed by the dynamic shear rheometer test and bending beam rheometer test. In addition, the performance of asphalt mixtures with bagasse fibers or lignin fibers were evaluated by a wheel rutting test, bending test at a low temperature, and water stability test, respectively. In conclusion, the hydrophilic functional groups on the fiber surface were partially eliminated by modification, facilitating the degradation of different fiber components. Furthermore, the degree of fibrillation was improved, and more interfaces with asphalt components were formed, thus enhancing the high-temperature deformation resistance of asphalt binders, but slightly impairing its low-temperature performance. Among all modification methods, the ternary composite modification exerted important influences on fiber structure, oil absorption, and rheological properties of asphalt binders, significantly enhancing the performance of asphalt mixtures. Combined with surface modification methods, bagasse fibers would be promising reinforced pavement materials.

Nano-Additives in Asphalt Binder: Bridging the Gap between Traditional Materials and Modern Requirements

This research delves into the realm of asphalt technology, exploring the potential of nano-additives to enhance traditional asphalt binder properties. Focusing on Nano-Titanium Dioxide (NT), Nano-Aluminum Oxide (NA), and Nano-Silica Oxide (NS), this study investigates the effects of incorporating these nanomaterials at varying dosages, ranging from 0% to 8%, on the asphalt binder’s performance. This study employs a series of experimental tests, including consistency, storage stability, rotational viscosity, mass loss due to aging, and rheological properties, to assess the impact of nano-additives on asphalt binder characteristics. The findings indicate a substantial improvement in the consistency of the asphalt binder with the addition of nanomaterials, particularly NS, which shows a 41% reduction in penetration at an 8% content and a notable increase in the softening point. The storage stability tests reveal that NS-modified asphalt exhibits superior stability compared to NT and NA, with a significantly lower ΔT increase. Furthermore, the investigation into rotational viscosity suggests that NS, despite increasing the binder’s viscosity, does not exceed the AASHTO M320 threshold, ensuring the binder’s workability. Aging tests demonstrate that NT, at lower concentrations, acts as an effective anti-aging agent, whereas NA and NS tend to increase the mass loss, impacting thermal stability. This study concludes that while each nanomaterial uniquely influences the asphalt binder’s properties, NS stands out in terms of enhancing the high-temperature performance and storage stability. Optimal dosages of 6% for NT and NA and 4% for NS are recommended based on the Overall Desirability analysis. This research bridges the gap between traditional asphalt materials and modern requirements, highlighting the transformative impact of nano-additives in advancing asphalt pavement technology.

Investigating the influence of polyethylene terephthalate fibres with different lengths on the cracking resistance of high-performance asphalt concrete

High-performance asphalt concrete is an innovative paving material that typically relies on the properties of polymer-modified asphalt binders. However, the application is limited due to their high cost and phase separation issues. A solution is explored in the present study by blending 12% asphaltenes and a straight-run asphalt binder with a true performance grade of 70.2–25.9, resulting in a true performance grade of 82.9–21.8, which elevates the binder’s stiffness. Three lengths of polyethylene terephthalate fibres are used to improve the cracking resistance of these asphaltenes-modified mixes. An indirect tensile cracking test is conducted at 25 and 37 °C, revealing a significant improvement in cracking tolerance and failure energy, particularly at 37 °C. The cracking tolerance index value peaked at 105 for 12 mm polyethylene terephthalate fabricated sample, while control asphaltenes-modified, 6 mm, and 18 mm polyethylene terephthalate fabricated samples achieved 61, 87, and 99, respectively, with failure energy increasing with longer fibres.

Effects of the geometric characteristics of graphene nanoplatelets on the physico-rheological properties of asphalt binder

While graphene nanoplatelets (GnPs) have emerged as promising nano-modifiers of asphalt binder in recent years, much is still unknown in terms of the existing correlations between the physical, chemical, and geometric characteristics of this nanofiller and observed asphalt binder properties. In this work, we investigate the important correlation between the geometric characteristics of GnPs and the rheological properties of the GnP-modified asphalt binder at high temperatures. Our results indicate that, in general, incorporating GnPs with large mean particle diameters (> 14 μm) and thicknesses (> 8 nm) enhances the high-temperature performance of the asphalt binder. The results of the multiple stress creep and recovery tests confirm that including GnPs in asphalt binder can decrease its permanent deformation by 33.2% and enhance its elastic recovery by 53.9%. Phase contrast images obtained by atomic force microscopy further indicate that the presence of GnPs with large mean particle diameters alters the morphology of the asphalt binder, leading to improved temperature stability and less susceptibility to permanent deformation.

Evaluation of Asphalt Binder and Mixture Properties Utilizing Fish Scale Powder as a Biomodifier

Fish represent an abundant and underutilized waste product from the fishing industry. This study investigated the effects of incorporating fish scale powder (FSP) at various dosages (3%, 6%, 9%, and 12%) on the properties of asphalt binder and mixtures. Conventional tests, viscosity, storage stability, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and multiple stress creep recovery tests were conducted on the binder. Mix design, wheel tracking, indirect tensile strength, fatigue, and ultrasonic pulse velocity tests were evaluated for the asphalt mixtures. The results showed that FSP increased binder stiffness and reduced temperature susceptibility but compromised low-temperature performance and workability regardless of dose. The storage stability test results showed improved high-temperature storage stability. In the mixtures, the permanent deformation resistance increased with increasing FSP content, decreasing the rut depth from 4.3mm for the control to 2.9mm at 12% FSP. The moisture damage resistance, indicated by the tensile strength ratio, increased from 90% for the control to 94.1% at 12% FSP. However, the fatigue life decreased from 14,010 cycles for the control sample to 11,190 cycles at 12% FSP. The dynamic and elastic modulus values before conditioning increased with higher FSP dosages, and this increasing trend was also observed after conditioning, signifying greater stiffness retention and moisture resistance of the asphalt mixtures containing higher amounts of FSP. Numerically, the 6-9% FSP range offered the optimum balance, enhancing the rutting resistance by 18% and moisture resistance by 3.2% compared to those of the control, while limiting the fatigue life to 12% and maintaining the workability. Overall, fish scale powder has potential for use as an asphalt biomodifier by transforming an environmental liability into a value-added sustainable paving material.

Phenomenological modeling of aging and rejuvenation on asphalt binder fatigue characteristics

Recycling agents (RAs) have been explored as additives to enhance the properties of recycled asphalt binders. Despite extensive research on RAs, a critical knowledge gap exists regarding their impact on fatigue cracking of asphalt binders, especially considering the aging processes. This study aims to comprehensively investigate the effects of recycling agents on the fatigue properties of asphalt binders, with a specific focus on the influence of aging and rejuvenation. The current Linear Amplitude Sweep (LAS) test analysis procedure is utilized to assess the fatigue properties, and the efficacy of existing LAS test-based indices is evaluated. Furthermore, a novel index based on the simplified viscoelastic continuum damage (S-VECD) theory framework is proposed to monitor changes in fatigue properties with aging and rejuvenation. A total of 26 recycled binder blends are studied and the results demonstrate that the proposed index consistently tracks the effects of aging and rejuvenation in recycled binder blends containing recycling agents. Additionally, cross-scale assessments are conducted by correlating the proposed index with mixture performance, specifically the Indirect Tensile-Cracking Test parameter (CTindex). The findings indicate that the proposed index exhibits a correlation with the CTindex after 1-day Long Term Aging testing and effectively captures the aging sensitivity across different scales.

The use of crosslinking agents, particularly sulfur, addresses compatibility issues in Polymer-modified binders (PmB), impacting storage stability and rheological properties. Through comprehensive rheological assessments, including Superpave grading and advanced techniques such as Glover-Rowe, master curves, Arrhenius and Power-law models, this study aimed to provide a deeper understanding of the role of sulfur as a crosslinking agent between asphalt and styrene-butadiene copolymer (SB), investigating its influence on the durability and performance of the asphalt binder. Results show sulfur levels up to 0.3%, enhanced PmB's elasticity, resistance to shear deformation, rutting, low-temperature cracking, and fatigue, making it suitable for a wider range of climatic conditions and heavier traffic levels. Beyond this threshold, the binder became very stiff and less workable, suggesting the potential onset of gelation. An optimal sulfur content in PmB enhanced compatibility, rheological properties, and overall efficiency of binder modification, potentially reducing polymer modification costs.

Evaluation of waste toner asphalt containing crude palm oil from Congo: Rheological properties, compatibility, self-healing and aging characteristic

This study investigates the impact of bio-based additives on waste toner-modified asphalt binder (WTMA) properties. Congo crude palm oil (CCPO) and waste banknote toner (WT) were chosen as modifiers. Rheological properties, including high-temperature behavior, fatigue resistance, and low-temperature performance, were evaluated using dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) and bending beam rheometer (BBR). Storage stability, Aging index, Self-healing, Fluorescence microscopy (FM), and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) tests were conducted. Results showed that the CCPO reduces WTMA viscosity, leading to lower mixing and compaction temperatures. However, CCPO inclusion decreases rutting performance, evidenced by reduced rutting factor (G*/sinδ) and % recovery (R), and increase non-recoverable creep compliance (Jnr). Fatigue resistance of CCPO/WT composite-modified asphalt surpasses that of WTMA. Similarly, CCPO/WT composite-modified asphalt exhibits higher resistance to low-temperature cracking. Moreover, CCPO addition reduces phase separation in WTMA, enhancing compatibility. Waste toner improves binder self-healing properties, although CCPO initially impacts WTMA’s self-healing ability negatively. Nevertheless, CCPO/WT composite-modified asphalt demonstrates higher self-healing capability compared to the base asphalt.

The pavement recycling method is one of the practical ways to integrate sustainable development into transportation infrastructure, and it has been adopted worldwide. The use of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) in new asphalt highways is limited due to the ageing effects caused by UV damage and weathering on the asphalt binder. To address this issue, waste vegetable oil (WVO) and waste engine oil (WEO) have been proposed as potential rejuvenating agents to enhance the recyclability of pavements containing RAP. This study evaluated the effectiveness of WEO and WVO as chemical rejuvenating agents through various tests on both aged and virgin asphalt binders. The tests included measurements of ductility, fire, and flash points, softening points, and penetration. The results indicate that the addition of WEO and WVO can improve the low-temperature properties of asphalt binders when mixed with RAP, resulting in reduced stiffness. The mixture containing WEO and WVO exhibited improved stability compared to the control, suggesting enhanced flow with increasing waste oil content in comparison to aged binder, albeit with slightly reduced flow compared to the virgin binder. This study demonstrates the potential of WEO and WVO as recycling agents to enhance the performance of bituminous mixes incorporating RAP.

Evaluation of benzaldehyd and dioctyl phthalate modified direct coal liquefaction residue asphalt binder based on rheology and microscopic mechanisms

This study intends to investigate the influence of benzaldehyde and dioctyl phthalate (DOP) on the rheological properties and microstructure of direct coal liquefaction residue (DCLR) modified asphalt binder. The high and low temperature rheological properties and fatigue properties were obtained by dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) and bending beam rheometer (BBR) tests. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) tests were conducted to evaluate the mechanism of property improvement in the DCLR modified asphalt binder. The results showed that the addition of DCLR increased the complex shear modulus G*, rutting factor G*/sin δ and fatigue life Nf of base asphalt binder, significantly improving the high temperature deformation resistance and fatigue resistance of base asphalt binder. This was attributed to the hardening effect resulting from the addition of DCLR, which enhanced the elastic properties, weakened the viscous properties and fluidity of asphalt binder. Additionally, the use of benzaldehyde and DOP reduced the creep stiffness S and lower continuous grading temperature Tc of DCLR modified asphalt binder, which compensated for the shortcomings of low temperature rheological properties of asphalt binder. The SEM images indicated that benzaldehyde and DOP significantly increased the compatibility of DCLR with the base asphalt binder. The FTIR tests showed that the addition of benzaldehyde and DOP introduced the aldehyde and ester groups, which were interacted with more polar functional groups in the asphalt to reduce the resistance to movement between the heavy components in the DCLR modified asphalt binder, which promoted the flow of asphalt and the dispersion of DCLR, and as a result, the benzaldehyde and DOP modified DCLR asphalt binder exhibited satisfied rheological properties.

A Study of the Bond Strength and Mechanism between Basalt Fibers and Asphalt Binders

The bond strength between basalt fibers and asphalt binders is an important parameter that can be used to evaluate the influence of basalt fibers on the mechanical properties of asphalt binders and asphalt mixtures. To date, however, there remains a lack of methods that can be used to assess the bond strength between basalt fibers and asphalt binders. This study employed a fiber-asphalt pull-out tester (POT). Significant upward, peak, and downward stages were observed from the relationship curves between the pull-out force (POF) and displacement, corresponding to the holding stage and reaching the maximum POF stage and the sliding or failure stage between fibers and asphalt binders. Maximum POF is recommended to calculate the bond strength between basalt fibers and asphalt binders. The types of asphalt binders suitable for basalt fibers and the appropriate fiber embedding depths for different types of asphalt binders guiding the selection of fiber length are recommended based on the influence of fiber embedding depth and asphalt binders on the fiber–asphalt bond strength. In addition, surface energy was used to calculate the bond strength as well. Surface energy was determined from contact angle measurements using the sessile drop method. Furthermore, a scanning electron microscope (SEM) was employed to examine the bond mechanism between asphalt binders and basalt fibers. These experiments showed how basalt fibers serve to reinforce asphalt mixtures by bonding with asphalt binders.

Study on the change rule of low-temperature properties of asphalt binder with aging time

ABSTRACT Low-temperature cracking is common distress in asphalt pavements. Understanding the change rule of its low-temperature properties is helpful in investigating the optimal maintenance timing of asphalt pavement. In this paper, the change rule of low-temperature properties of asphalt binders with aging time is investigated by various indexes. Four asphalt binders and four anti-aging modified asphalt binders were subjected to the rolling thin film oven (RTFO) test and pressure aging vessel (PAV) test. Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR) with the 4 mm parallel plates was used to determine the low-temperature properties of asphalt binders. The results show that aging and low temperature have a negative impact on the low-temperature properties of asphalt binders. The anti-aging agent improves the low-temperature properties and aging resistance of asphalt binders. Compared with other indexes, the critical cracking temperature Tc and the critical temperature difference ΔTc are more suitable for analysing the effect of aging on the low-temperature properties of asphalt binders. Also, the ΔTc shows the three-stage decreasing rule of ‘fast-slow-fast’, with the inflection points. It meant that the low-temperature properties of asphalt binders had been altered at the inflection points, which provided a favourable reference to research on the optimal maintenance timing of asphalt pavement.

Nano-Scale and Macro-Scale Characterizations of the Effects of Recycled Plastics on Asphalt Binder Properties

This paper summarizes the results of one of the first comprehensive laboratory studies that was conducted to evaluate the effects of adding different contents of recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPETE) as a modifier to an asphalt binder on the rheological and mechanical properties of the modified binder as well as on the agglomeration behavior between the rPETE and asphalt binder at a multiscale level. The high-temperature and low-temperature performances of the modified binder were investigated at the macro-scale and compared with those of the unmodified binder using dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) and bending-beam rheometer (BBR) rheological tests, as well as asphalt binder cracking device (ABCD) testing. The nano-scale evaluation of the binder properties, including the surface roughness, bonding energy, and reduced modulus, was accomplished using atomic force microscopy (AFM). The results indicated that the addition of rPETE enhanced the high- and intermediate-temperature rheological properties of the modified PG 64-22 binder. The low-temperature rheological properties and resistance to cracking decreased slightly with increasing rPETE content in the asphalt binder. However, this reduction was not remarkable when adding 4%, 8%, and 10% rPETE contents. The asphalt binder modified with 4% rPETE had a low-temperature grade of −22, similar to that of the unmodified binder, indicating that 4% rPETE can be added to the binder to improve its high- and intermediate-temperature properties without reducing its resistance to low-temperature damage. The AFM tapping-mode results indicated that the inclusion of rPETE in the asphalt binder improved the stiffness properties of the modified binder as compared with those of the control asphalt binder. In addition, the rPETE-modified binders showed rougher surfaces than the control binder. The addition of rPETE to the binder increased the values of the reduced modulus and bonding energy compared with those of the control binder.

Effect of impregnated organophilic (hydrophobic) nano clay on asphalt binder properties and performance

This research paper presents the effects of electrophilic modification on raw nano clay (which is hydrophilic in nature) through wet impregnation method to transform it into hydrophobic nature. The reactivity, adsorption capability, and compatibility of nano clay with hydrocarbon and organic materials are improved by entailing functional group (QAS) on raw nano clay surface. Impact of impregnated organophilic nano clay (hydrophobic) on asphalt binder properties and mixture’s performance are studied. Organophilic(hydrophobic) nano clay with 3–5% content to the weight of the binder were selected after extensive trials for modification of asphalt binder. To analyze the electrophilic changes in organophilic nano clay (ONC) and its bonding chemistry with asphalt binder, FTIR analysis, and X-ray diffraction techniques were utilized. In addition, viscosity, low & high-temperature stiffness, bitumen bond strength, and phase separation were studied in the lab. The effect of organophilic nano clay modified binder on asphalt mixture was also measured by deploying rut resistance, moisture susceptibility& fatigue resistance tests. The study revealed that raw nano clay showed chemical compatibility with asphalt binder after electrophilic modification through wet impregnation method. ONC modified binder had better rheological properties, homogenized composition, and storage stability than hydrophilic nature. Mixtures prepared with ONC showed better resistance to rutting, fatigue, and moisture susceptibility.

Study on Viscoelastic Properties of Various Fiber-Reinforced Asphalt Binders.

This study analyzed the viscoelastic properties of asphalt binders reinforced with various fibers, such as modified asphalt binder, modified asphalt binder reinforced with lignin fibers (LFs), polyester fibers (PFs), and polypropylene fibers (PPFs), using dynamic shear rheological (DSR) testing. Then, the experiment generated data on the dynamic modulus and phase angle, which described the dynamic rheological characteristics at varying temperatures. The generalized Maxwell model was employed to select the appropriate element, and the test curve was fitted into a discrete time spectrum based on the time-temperature equivalence principle (TTSP). The master curves of the relaxation modulus and creep compliance were established to predict the relaxation and creep properties of various asphalt binders. The analysis indicated that fiber-reinforced binders offer superior resistance to high temperatures and long-term deformation, while being less sensitive to temperature and having a more significant elastic characterization. The binders reinforced with PPFs and LFs exhibited superior performance in high-temperature settings and long-term durability, respectively. On the other hand, the binder reinforced with PFs displayed exceptional high-temperature elastic properties. Additionally, based on the experimental data and corresponding discussion, it appears that the 13-element GM model is more appropriate for fitting the data.

Effects of Different Antioxidant Intercalated Layered Double Hydroxides on Anti-Aging Properties of Asphalt Binders

This research aims to prepare different antioxidant intercalated layered double hydroxides (LDHs) and compare the thermal oxidation and ultraviolet (UV) aging resistances of different modified asphalts. The ion exchange technique was used to intercalate three different antioxidants: 3-(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-carboxyphenyl) propionic acid, antioxidant 1222, and sodium dibutyl dithiocarbamate (rubber accelerator TP) into the interlayer of LDHs. The morphology, structures, UV blocking, and free radical scavenging properties of different antioxidant intercalated LDHs were characterized, respectively. The effects of the anti-aging agents on the physical properties (penetration, softening point, ductility, and viscosity); rheological behaviors (complex modulus and phase angle); and functional groups (C=O and S=O) of asphalt both before and after thermal oxidation aging and UV aging were systematically investigated. The results of the crystal structure and functional group analysis show that the three different antioxidants can be successfully inserted into the interlayer of LDHs without destroying their layered structures. Antioxidant intercalated LDHs exhibit a remarkable capacity for absorbing UV rays, coupled with a moderate ability to reflect UV light. Moreover, the inclusion of antioxidants into the interlayers of LDHs confers upon them the ability to scavenge free radicals. After 2 h of reaction, the free radical scavenging rates of LDHs-3, LDHs-1222, and LDHs-TP were 57.7%, 35.6%, and 17.1%, respectively. With an increase in the content of the antioxidant intercalated LDHs, the performance of the modified asphalt varies, and 4% is the optimal content of the anti-aging agents. Asphalts with the three antioxidant intercalated LDHs all had favorable storage stability, and their physical and rheological properties were improved after aging compared to LDHs-modified asphalt. The LDHs-3-modified asphalt showed the best anti-ultraviolet aging effect, while LDHs-1222-modified asphalt showed the best anti-thermal oxidation aging effect. This research lays the foundation for developing aging-resistant asphalt and improving the durability of asphalt pavement.

Influence of Petroleum-Based and Bio-Derived Recycling Agents on High-RAP Asphalt Mixtures Performance

Reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) has been utilized as a potential partial substitute for virgin asphalt binder in asphalt mixtures. However, a primary concern with increasing RAP content in asphalt mixtures is the cracking potential, attributed to the aged RAP asphalt binder (RAP-binder). To address this, the use of petroleum-based and bio-derived recycling agents (RAs) in enhancing the cracking resistance of high-RAP asphalt mixtures has been explored. The objective of this study is to ascertain the effectiveness of six RAs in mitigating cracking in high-RAP asphalt mixtures. The RAs considered include petroleum-crude-oil-derived aromatic oil, soy oil, and four types of tall-oil-derived phytosterol (industrial by-product, intermediate, purified, and fatty acid-based). The RAs’ dosages were optimized, based on RAP-binder and unmodified asphalt binder properties, to produce target PG 70-22 asphalt binder when incorporated in asphalt mixtures containing 30% RAP. To assess the engineering performance of these 30%-RAP asphalt mixtures for each RA, a conventional asphalt mixture incorporating styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS)-modified PG 70-22 asphalt binder without RAP or RAs was benchmarked for comparison. Mechanical tests performed included Hamburg wheel-track testing (HWTT), intermediate-temperature fracture tests (semi-circular bend, Illinois flexibility index, and IDEAL cracking tolerance), and thermal stress-restrained specimen tensile strength test to evaluate permanent deformation, intermediate-temperature cracking resistance, and low-temperature cracking resistance, respectively. Results showed that petroleum-crude-oil-derived aromatic oil and tall-oil-derived fatty-acid-based oil RAs were able to rejuvenate RAP-binder as measured by the cracking tests performed. Further, the use of these RAs did not adversely impact the asphalt mixtures’ permanent deformation performance.
