Numerical simulation of concrete strength based on microstructure and mineral composition analysis using micro-CT and XRD technology

The investigation of mechanical properties in porous materials, such as concrete, has been a significant area of interest in the fields of civil engineering and architecture. Traditional macroscopic mechanical testing methods are limited due to destructive experimental conditions, time-consuming procedures, and the inability to characterize internal structures. To overcome these limitations, researchers have utilized microscopic factors with micro-CT and simulation models. Different simulation methods demand mechanical parameters to effectively model the constituent materials; however, there exists variability in the amount and standard values of these input parameters, which leads to a decrease in the reliability of the obtained results. In order to tackle this issue, a novel approach is proposed, which integrates mineral component analysis using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and establishes coefficients to minimize the number of necessary input parameters. Simulation results demonstrate excellent agreement with experimental measurements, accurately reproducing the stages of elastic deformation, failure, and fracture in the stress-strain curve of concrete. Our findings reveal that changes in the concrete skeletal structure, microstructure, and mineral composition significantly influence compressive strength. Coarse aggregates and high-mechanical-performance minerals, in particular, have a substantial impact. Additionally, the mechanical properties show a significant linear relationship with the strength reduction coefficient of aggregates and concrete cores. In conclusion, the proposed method, combining CT scanning and XRD with FDEM, proves to be a reliable and practical approach for accurately assessing the mechanical properties of concrete. This methodology simplifies the intricate processes associated with the time-intensive parameter calibration, leading to a more efficient parameter allocation procedure. As a result, this method enhances concrete design, promotes a better understanding of parameter impacts, and enables accurate prediction of concrete behavior across diverse scenarios.

Doped Porous Carbon Spheres with Controllable Vesicle Structure: Preparation and the Effects of Pore Size on Electromagnetic Wave Absorption Properties.

This work reports on the preparation of uniform vesicle-structural carbon spheres doped with heteroatoms of N, P, and S, with the pore sizes strictly controlled by the hard templates of monodisperse submicron SiO2 spheres. The uniformly doped vesicular carbon microspheres are obtained in three steps: Stöber hydrolysis for the SiO2; in situ polymerization for the immobilization; and alkaline etching after carbonization. The size of the vesicles can be easily adjusted by regulating the particle size of the submicron SiO2 spheres, which has a significant effect on its electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption performance. Compared with microspheres with pore sizes of 180 and 480nm, when the vesicle aperture is 327nm, with only 5.5wt.% filling load and 1.9mm thickness, the material shows the best EMW absorption behavior with the effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) covers the entire Ku band (6.32GHz) and the minimum reflection loss (RLmin) of -36.10dB, suggesting the optimized pore size of the microspheres can significantly improve the overall impedance matching of the material and achieve broadband wave absorption. This work paves the way for the enhancement of EMW absorption properties of porous material by optimizing the pore size of uniform apertures while maintaining their composition.

On the vibration responses of orthotropic laminated cylindrical panels with non-uniform porosity distributions using higher-order shear deformation theory

The present study investigates free vibration analysis of cylindrical panels made of porous orthotropic layers. Porous material properties are modeled using uniform and two non-uniform porosity distribution patterns through the thickness. The theoretical formulations are expressed based on the higher-order shear deformation theory. The equations of motion of laminated cylindrical panels are established by performing Hamilton’s principle. These fundamental partial differential equations are solved analytically for the laminated cylindrical panels, which are simply supported on all edges. Galerkin’s solution procedure is applied to obtain the natural frequency equation. The natural frequencies are compared to results in the literature to verify the obtained frequency equation. Afterward, novel parametric studies are developed to discuss the influence of porosity parameters, porosity distribution patterns, geometrical parameters, orthotropy, and lamination sequences on the free vibration response of porous laminated cylindrical panels.

Micro-CT image-based computation of effective thermal and mechanical properties of fibrous porous materials

Fibrous porous materials are extensively employed as heat shielding material for space vehicles and capsules. To predict the performance of these materials using computational modeling at the vehicle/capsule scale, the effective material properties are needed. In this work, the effective thermal conductivity and elastic constants of a carbon fibrous porous material called FiberForm (precursor of PICA) were calculated using a direct image-based approach. In this image-based approach, the microstructures obtained using X-ray computed tomography technique are represented as binary voxel data. Nonlocal interactions are introduced between neighboring voxels. Integro-differential equations, with respect to spatial and temporal dimensions respectively, are developed to govern material thermal and mechanical behaviors. Using this approach, energy-based computational procedures were developed to calculate the effective material properties of fibrous and porous materials irrespective of the periodicity of underlying microstructures. The size of representative volume element was determined by convergence of effective properties with respect to microstructure size.

Bayesian calibration of constitutive models for polymeric foams

Porous materials are traditionally used for their sound absorption and insulation properties. Over the past decade, more attention has been given to their elastic and damping properties. There is a particular interest in the automotive industry to replace heavy layers (consisting of constrained viscoelastic rubber layers) with felts or foams evidencing high damping capabilities. Hence, characterizing efficiently the viscoelastic properties of porous materials is crucial for quality control and further improvements in product development and fabrication. In this sense, the main contribution of this work is to propose a stochastic strategy to determine the constitutive equations describing the viscoelastic behavior of foams. Vibration tests are carried out on a two-layer panel containing a free-layer of a foam. A finite element model is developed considering only the viscoelasticity of the porous skeleton, neglecting the influence of the fluid phase. A fractional derivative model is calibrated and validated for two types o foam based on a Bayesian framework. The models indicate that the reconstitute porous rubber presents absolute values of the complex modulus greater than the ones provided by the closed-cell polyurethane foam and its energy dissipation is greater the one provided by the closed-cell polyurethane one.

R‐Vine Copulas for Data‐Driven Quantification of Descriptor Relationships in Porous Materials

AbstractLocal variations in the 3D microstructure can control the macroscopic behavior of heterogeneous porous materials. For example, the permittivity through porous sheets or membranes is governed by local high‐volume pathways or bottlenecks. Due to local variations, unfeasibly large amounts of microstructure data may be needed to reliably predict such material properties directly from image data. Here it is demonstrated that a vine copula approach provides parametric models for local microstructure descriptors that compactly capture the 3D microstructure including its local variations and efficiently probe it with respect to selected, measurable properties. In contrast to common methods of complexity reduction, the proposed approach creates parametric models for the multivariate probability distribution of high‐dimensional descriptor vectors that inherently contain the complex, nonlinear dependencies between these descriptors. Therein, material properties are offered in physically motivated distributions of microstructure descriptors rather than as normally distributed data. Applied to porous fiber networks (paper) before and after unidirectional compression, it is shown that the copula‐based models reveal material‐characteristic relationships between two or more microstructure descriptors. In this way, the presented modeling approach can provide deeper insight into the microscopic origin of effective macroscopic properties of heterogeneous porous materials.

An extended continuum-mechanics standard linear solid rheology for fluid-saturated porous rock

SUMMARY In a large body of rock-physics research, seismic wave velocity dispersion and attenuation in fluid-saturated porous rock are studied by constructing analytical or numerical models for time- or frequency-dependent dynamic (effective, or viscoelastic) moduli. A key and broadly used model of such kind is the Zener's, or the standard linear solid (SLS). This model is qualitatively successful in explaining many field and laboratory observations and serves as the key element of many generalizations such as the Burgers model for plastic deformations or the generalized SLS explaining band-limited or near-constant seismic attenuation. However, as a physical model of fluid-saturated porous rock, the SLS has several major limitations: disregard of inertial effects, absence of secondary wave modes and lack of key physical parameters such as porosity and Skempton coefficients. Grainy and porous rock is an unconsolidated material in which the effective density is frequency-dependent, and its effects on wave velocities may exceed those of the dynamic modulus. To overcome these limitations of the empirical SLS, we propose a rigorous rheologic model based on classical continuum mechanics and called the extended SLS, or eSLS. This rheology explains the available attenuation and dispersion observations equally well, but it is also close to Biot's model, honours all poroelastic relations, includes inertial effects, and reveals several new physical properties of the material. Detailed comparison of the eSLS and Biot's models gives a physical-mechanism-based classification of wave-induced fluid flow (WIFF) phenomena. In this classification, the so-called ‘global-scale’ flows occur in Biot's type structures within the material, whereas the ‘local-scale’ WIFF occurs in eSLS-type structures. Combining Biot's and eSLS models gives a broad class of rheologies for linear anelastic phenomena within rock with a single type of porosity. The model can be readily generalized to multiple porosities and different types of internal variables, such as describing squirt flows, wetting or thermoelastic effects. Modelling is conducted with relatively little effort, using a single matrix equation similar to a mechanical form of the standard SLS. By combining the eSLS and Biot's models, observations of dynamic-modulus dispersion and attenuation can be inverted for macroscopic mechanical properties of porous materials.

High-Precision 3D reconstruction and quantitative structure description: Linking microstructure to macroscopic heat transfer of aerogels

The intricate interplay between microstructure and macroscopic transfer processes in porous materials has long been recognized, yet achieving a definitive link between them remains a formidable challenge. Herein, we propose an effective approach to address this challenge by introducing a high-precision 3D reconstruction and structure descriptor database analysis method of nanoporous aerogels, which enables deeper understanding and accurate predictions of structure-directed properties. By employing focused ion beam-scanning electron microscope (FIB-SEM) technique supplemented with image preprocessing and image segmentation, we successfully built a 3D reconstruction model that exhibits high consistency with experimental results. Then, a structure descriptor database from the view of original porous structure, structure connectivity, and topological information is established, and 10 descriptors are preliminarily filtered relevance with thermal conductivity. Consequently, the quantitative relationship between descriptor and thermal conductivity is evaluated via a back propagation (BP) neural network, and three categories structure descriptors which have the most significant impact are determined as (i) the description of gaseous heat transfer pathways, (ii) the description of three-dimensional connectivity, and (iii) the description of interface complexity. With the profound understanding of structure descriptor, the present work offers a novel, structure-focused strategy that closely link the microstructure to macroscopic properties of porous materials.

Features of Processes for Preparation and Performance of Foamed Lightweight Soil with Steel Slag Micronized Powder and Granulated Blast Furnace Slag

Steel slag micronized powder, granulated blast furnace slag, and cement were used as cementitious materials to prepare a foamed lightweight soil for roadbed filling to reduce the settlement and additional stress of the foundation and to solve the environmental problems caused by the storage of large amounts of steel slag. However, the instability of steel slag and the multi-angular nature of its surface limit the resource utilization of steel slag. Currently, concrete technology is unable to achieve a large amount of steel slag. Therefore, it is necessary to deeply explore the influence of steel slag content and the specific surface area of steel slag on the working performance, compressive strength, durability, and micro-mechanism of foam light soil. Through the modification of steel slag and the improvement of the production process, the preparation of foam light soil with a large amount of steel slag can be realized. In this study, the foamed lightweight soil with 1.0 Mpa was prepared by cementitious materials composed of 40% cement and 60% multi-mixture of steel slag micronized powder and granulated blast furnace slag. The study of SEM images and BET demonstrated that the larger specific surface area of steel slag powder was more conducive to improving the durability of the foamed lightweight soil. Meanwhile, XRD analyses confirmed that the reactions of f-CaO and f-MgO in steel slag were slowly released in the porous foamed lightweight soil system, which compensated for the shrinkage properties of porous materials. When the SSMP content was 0%, the shrinkage rate was 2.34 × 10−3, while when the SSMP content was 60%, the shrinkage rate was only 0.54 × 10−3. Furthermore, our study of the hydration process of samples indicated that the strong alkalinity of steel slag micronized powder hydration was helpful to stimulate the potential activity of the slag powder, which was beneficial to the improvement of the compressive strength of foamed lightweight soil. Thus, this study provides a valuable idea for reducing the settlement and additional stress of the original foundation and for solving the environmental problems caused by a large amount of steel slag storage.

Nonlinear Vibration of Saturated Porous Functionally Graded Plate in Thermal Environment

In this work we studied investigates the nonlinear vibrations of a rectangular saturated porous functionally graded (FG) plate on elastic foundations in thermal environment. The mechanical properties of the saturated porous material vary smoothly with the thickness in three different distributions of porosity including uniform, symmetrically irregular, and asymmetrically irregular. The basic equations are employed by the Reddy’s higher order shear deformation theory, incorporating the geometrically nonlinear von Kármán strain-displacement relationship, stress-strain relations based on the elastic theory for porous materials by Biot, and an analytical solution obtained through the Galerkin method and Airy’s stress function for the simply supported plate. The influence of the geometrical and material parameters, elastic foundations and temperature increment on the nonlinear vibrations of the saturated porous FG plate were specifically evaluated through numerical investigations. 
 
 

Joint micromechanical model for determination of effective elastic and electromagnetic properties of porous materials

In this paper we propose an approach for calculating the effective physical properties of porous materials (for example, sedimentary rocks) which is based on the unified structure of the pore space. This approach is based on the Generalized Differential Effective Medium (GDEM) method. This method generalizes the classical differential scheme (DEM) for the case of many types of inclusions. The physical properties of a composite calculated using the GDEM depend on how the solution is constructed.A porous medium is represented by the elastic weakly conductive matrix with embedded inclusions of two types (spheroidal and cylindrical), saturated with a conductive liquid. The cylindrical inclusions appear in the system when the porosity value exceeds the void percolation. Parameters, that characterize the inclusions (the aspect ratio of spheroidal inclusions and the relative part of cylindrical inclusions), are determined in the inverse problem solving process for the experimental data approximation of the effective conductivity as a porosity function. These parameters, obtained by solving the inverse problem, were used to calculate the effective elastic moduli, electrical conductivity, and dielectric permittivity of porous media. The results obtained describe well the available experimental data for different effective physical properties.

Impact response of physical analog of Martian regolith

A careful examination of collisional processes occurring on surfaces of Solar System objects requires data on the dynamic properties of porous geological materials. Shock waves traveling in sand with physical properties analogous to those of some types of Martian regolith are studied in a series of uniaxial plate impact experiments. The initial density of the samples and average grain size are 1.30 g cm−3 and 95 μm, respectively. The obtained Hugoniot of this simulant is in general agreement with those of previously studied sands. The effect of porosity and grain morphology on Hugoniots of these geological materials is also highlighted. A laser velocimetry technique is used to observe the structure of propagated waves. Wave fronts with rise times on the order of several hundred or tens of microseconds were recorded in the pressure range of 0.5 to 1.7 GPa. For the simulant, a value of 1.91 was found for an exponent in the relationship between rise time and pressure τ∼p−m. Additionally, exponents for different granular and silica-rich systems studied earlier were also provided. An analysis of wave thickness revealed that in the pressure range of 0.5–1.1 GPa, this parameter can be associated with the grain average size. At the highest pressure (1.7 GPa), the minimum particle size (∼20 μm) turned out to be a more suitable quantity to describe the shock wave structure.

Micromechanical study of raw earth stabilization using instrumented indentation

Alkali-activated slag is used as a stabilizer in earthen materials to improve their mechanical properties and to reduce their sensitivity to water. The efficiency of this stabilization is assessed through the mechanical characterization of samples made of three stabilized raw earths (RE) with different mineralogical compositions and equilibrated under five different hygrometric conditions. Instrumented indentation tests are used to evaluate the cohesion of the stabilized samples as this testing method allows the characterization of the mechanical properties of brittle porous materials at a local scale. The results show an increase in hardness and elastic modulus and a strong decrease in water sensitivity of the three different RE with increasing slag and activator contents.

Enhancing unsteady heat transfer simulation in porous media through the application of convolutional neural networks

This research describes a novel technique for anticipating unstable heat transfer in porous media. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are used with finite volume method (FVM) and long short-term memory (LSTM) networks to accomplish this. Heat transport networks are difficult to characterise using traditional numerical methodologies owing to their nonlinearity and complexity. The proposed solution combines FVM’s precise physical modelling with CNN’s and LSTM’s superior pattern identification and temporal analysis. This collaboration supports the suggested strategy. Heat transport dynamics simulations in porous materials are more accurate, efficient, and adaptable when employing this hybrid framework. The experimental setup focused on porous material properties and gathered and processed a large amount of data. The building’s three-dimensional shape, heat transfer, and time were investigated. Temporal fluctuations were also used. Multiple indicators are used to evaluate the overall performance of the model. These criteria include convergence speed, F1 score, accuracy, precision, recall, and computational cost. In the most notable numerical results, the proposed strategy surpasses both the Finite Element and the Lattice Boltzmann methods. The presented method enabled fast convergence and reduced processing costs. These results were: accuracy (0.92), precision (0.93), recall (0.91), and F1 score (0.92). The proposed method is generalizable and adaptable, and it can address a variety of heat transport simulation problems in porous media. Unlike CNNs, which can identify significant spatial patterns, LSTM cells can only see temporal dynamics. These two components are required to show heat transfer, which is a continually changing phenomenon. Modern technology enables more complex simulations. Processing expenses are lowered, and estimations are more accurate. These two discoveries were obtained through the inquiry and methodologies. Finally, the CNN-FVM-LSTM technique simulates heat transport using complicated computer models. Predicting unusually high temperatures in porous materials may improve the model’s accuracy, computational efficiency, and flexibility.

Shrinkage properties of porous materials during drying: a review

The shrinkage characteristic of porous materials is an important consideration in the drying process, as it can significantly impact the texture of the dried product and energy utilization. This phenomenon is influenced by numerous factors, including the structure of the cells, drying conditions, and the glass transition temperature. To gain a deeper understanding of the drying process, it is necessary to develop theoretical models that account for the simultaneous heat and mass transfer processes at the cellular level, as well as simulation tools to analyze the associated changes in drying morphology. In this paper, we highlight several key factors affecting shrinkage during the drying of porous materials, and also outline drying modeling, morphological simulation, and drying technology design considerations to provide guidance for improving the drying quality of porous materials as well as energy conversion efficiency.

Study of structure and properties of a new porous composite material obtained by direct laser deposition

The possibility of formation of porous materials for biomedical applications from VT6/Ta/Zr alloy by direct laser deposition has been shown. Varying the laser power allowed to obtain alloys with variable porosity. The modes providing formation of porous material with normal elasticity modulus corresponding to human bone were selected. It was found that the porosity value of 32% is achieved at the laser power of 50 W, which meets the requirements, for example, for dental prosthetics. In the process of direct laser deposition of materials in VT6/Ta/Zr alloys with variable porosity tantalum particles do not melt and act as crystallization centers. Such conditions ensure the formation of a highly dispersed metal structure consisting mainly of VT6 powders with evenly distributed Ta and Zr particles.

Advancing Cancer Treatment: Enhanced Combination Therapy through Functionalized Porous Nanoparticles.

Cancer remains a major global health challenge, necessitating the development of innovative treatment strategies. This review focuses on the functionalization of porous nanoparticles for combination therapy, a promising approach to enhance cancer treatment efficacy while mitigating the limitations associated with conventional methods. Combination therapy, integrating multiple treatment modalities such as chemotherapy, phototherapy, immunotherapy, and others, has emerged as an effective strategy to address the shortcomings of individual treatments. The unique properties of mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN) and other porous materials, like nanoparticles coated with mesoporous silica (NP@MS), metal-organic frameworks (MOF), mesoporous platinum nanoparticles (mesoPt), and carbon dots (CDs), are being explored for drug solubility, bioavailability, targeted delivery, and controlled drug release. Recent advancements in the functionalization of mesoporous nanoparticles with ligands, biomaterials, and polymers are reviewed here, highlighting their role in enhancing the efficacy of combination therapy. Various research has demonstrated the effectiveness of these nanoparticles in co-delivering drugs and photosensitizers, achieving targeted delivery, and responding to multiple stimuli for controlled drug release. This review introduces the synthesis and functionalization methods of these porous nanoparticles, along with their applications in combination therapy.

M-Voronoi and other random open and closed-cell elasto-plastic cellular materials: Geometry generation and numerical study at small and large strains

The present study deals with a numerical design strategy of a novel class of three-dimensional random Voronoi-type geometries, called M-Voronoi. These materials comprise random, non-quadratic convex void shapes and non-uniform intervoid ligament thicknesses, and can span high-to-low relative densities. The starting point for their generation is a random adsorption algorithm (RSA) construction with spherical voids embedded in an incompressible, nonlinear elastic matrix phase. The initial RSA geometry is subjected to large elastic volume changes by prescribing Dirichlet boundary conditions. Due to the incompressibility of the matrix phase, the externally imposed volume changes lead to significant void growth. The numerical growth process may be stopped at any desired porosity. The proposed M-Voronoi process is general and allows the formation of isotropic (or anisotropic) designs. As a byproduct of the developed approach, we also present a novel remeshing technique allowing to read arbitrary geometries of one or multiple phases. The elasto-plastic properties of the M-Voronoi porous materials are numerically investigated at small strains as well as large compressive and shear loads. Their response is assessed by comparison with other well-known random and periodic porous geometries such as polydisperse porous materials with spherical voids (RSA), classical TPMS Gyroid geometries and random Spinodoid topologies. The results show that M-Voronoi and RSA (with spherical voids) geometries exhibit the stiffest elastic and highest flow stress response compared to the other two geometries. This study shows unambiguously that randomness may or may not lead to enhanced mechanical response such as higher stiffness or flow stress.

Ultrasonic treatment duration: A nuanced parameter in synthesis affecting structural properties and ORR performance of KOH-activated carbon

In this study, we investigate the effects of the duration of ultrasonic treatment during the impregnation process of a carbon precursor with an aqueous alkaline solution on the structural and electrochemical properties of KOH-activated carbon materials. Our findings using polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-derived carbon materials reveal that extended ultrasonic treatment leads to a more consistent distribution of the activating agent, promoting more uniform surface activation. This leads to notable shifts in the material's structure and surface chemistry, thereby influencing its functionality as an electrode material in supercapacitors and its electrocatalytic activity in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Our results indicate a 6 % difference in the specific surface area and an 8 wt% rise in oxygen content when comparing samples without ultrasonic treatment to those treated for 10 min. Moreover, the specific capacitance increases from 133.9 to 163.5 F g−1, and the ORR activity ascends from 1.88 to 2.23 mA cm−2. This research highlights the potential of ultrasonic treatment duration as a variable to fine-tune the structure and properties of porous carbon materials, emphasizing its scientific and technological significance in the production of stable porous carbon materials.
