Effect of doping with carbon dots on the alignment and dielectric properties of nematic liquid crystal 4-cyano-4′-pentylbiphenyl in ITO sample cells without conventional alignment layers for low-cost display applications

The melding of nanomaterials with liquid crystalline materials is at the frontier of scientific research due to the transformative impact of nanoparticles on the functionalities of host liquid crystal materials. Here, we report the effect of doping of carbon dots (CDs) in the nematic liquid crystal (NLC), 5CB (4-cyano-4′-pentylbiphenyl) in indium tin oxide (ITO) sample cells without alignment layers (i.e., unaligned ITO (U-ITO) sample cells) using polarizing optical microscopy and dielectric spectroscopic techniques. Polarizing optical microscopy reveals largely dark optical textures under crossed polarizers confirming vertical alignment of Pure 5CB in U-ITO sample cells. However, defects present in the texture pose severe constraints on the use of induced vertical alignment in U-ITO sample cells for device applications. To improve the quality of vertical alignment, CDs of size 2.8 nm at concentrations of 0.03, 0.05 and 0.1 wt% are doped into 5CB. Optical texture studies show the quality of induced vertical alignment of the 0.03 wt% composite is better than pure 5CB and other composites. Frequency-temperature dependent dielectric studies verify the induced vertical alignment by observation of the short-axis molecular relaxation through. The stability of the vertical alignment throughout the nematic phase of 5CB is confirmed through temperature dependent dielectric and optical texture studies. The induced vertical alignment of 5CB in U-ITO sample cells could be attributed to the stronger LC-LC interaction than the ITO-LC interaction. The improvement in the quality of vertical alignment of CDs-5CB composites could be due to the CDs influencing LC-LC and ITO-LC interactions. Finally, the effect of CDs on the increasing dc electrical conductivity of 5CB in U-ITO sample cells is investigated. Our results clearly indicate that CD-5CB composites would be useful in cost-effective display and other photonic devices devoid of alignment layers.

Investigating the effect of SiO2 thin films with sculptured topographies on the alignment properties of liquid crystals

In the present work, sculptured thin films (STF) based on silicon dioxide (SiO2) induced on the indium tin oxide (ITO) coated substrates via glancing angle deposition (GLAD) technique using the physical vapor deposition (PVD) process. Our main motive to perform this work is to address the issues we have faced with the traditional alignment method and give a try to overcome those problems. Keeping these challenges in our mind, we are giving here an alternative to traditional method and explored this different alignment technique with GLAD process. We have fabricated a liquid crystal device (LCD) in a way of electrically-controlled birefringence (ECB) and placed the engineered substrates in anti-parallel alignment. Morphological, optical and electro-optic behaviour of resulting device has been studied in the ∼5 μm thick device. Effect of applied voltage on the morphology and electro-optic behaviour of liquid crystal has been established. Interestingly, LC material demonstrates electrically switchable birefringence colours viz. brown, green, pink, purple and mauve colour, under applied electric field in room temperature at 10X magnification under polarizing optical microscope. A very nice extinction and contrast has been obtained with fabricated ECB device, which elucidate the device quality with impeccable alignment without any disclination defects. Besides, the electro-optic characteristics it also shows a significant impact on the liquid crystal properties. The obtained results demonstrate nice optical retardation, a lower Frederick's threshold voltage i.e. 1.5 V and 19.03 dB higher contrast respectively. An impressive switching response time τon of 5.4 ms and τoff = 600 µs at 20 V has attained with respective device as well. Such change in parameters may correspond to the higher electrical torque experienced by the LC molecules on the application of applied field. Anchoring energy and pretilt angle of respective system has been calculated and correlated with observed behaviour. Thus, engineered device with this superior alignment method show remarkable electro-optic results which can open a new way for the development of fast LCD for advanced optical device applications.

Novel AIE liquid crystals with high CPL-active bearing multiple dodecyl/cholesterol-decorated R-BINOL-cyanostilbene

The well-structured circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) active liquid crystal materials (R-BINC-Al and R-BINC-Ch) were synthesized through Suzuki coupling of the R-binaphthyl-cyanostilbene unit, followed by modification with dodecyl chains or cholesterol groups. The influence of chiral sources on the liquid crystal behavior, optical properties, and chiroptical response of R-BINC-Al and R-BINC-Ch was thoroughly investigated. Such results revealed that both molecules exhibited typical aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties and strong solid-state fluorescence. Concretely, the quantum efficiency (ΦF) values of samples with multiple chiral sources increased from 46 % to 51 % by forming liquid crystals in the smectic C and cholesteric phases, the chirality can be transferred to the cyanostilbene unit through ordered self-assembly in the mesophase, resulting in a significant CPL signal across the molecules. Rightfully, the dissymmetry factor (glum) was increased from -7.92 × 10–3 to -1.53 × 10–2 with the introduction of chiral cholesteryl groups. our work elucidated the relationship between multiple chiral sources and CPL behavior, offering a systematic approach to designing chiral luminescent materials in the liquid-crystal phase with high ΦF and substantial glum values, providing a theoretical framework for potential applications in optoelectronic devices.

Chiral liquid crystal dimers with smectic phases for stabilization of anticlinic state in surface-stabilised geometry

The growing demand for enhanced optical quality and faster electro-optical response in liquid crystal (LC) photonic devices has expanded the search for advanced materials capable of improving the properties of LCs beyond conventional ones. Among these compounds are LC dimers with ferroelectric and antiferroelectric properties which can be incorporated into LC mixtures to enhance performance. However, existing dimers often feature high melting temperatures, enthalpies, and other physicochemical characteristics that render them unsuitable as dopants in antiferroelectric liquid crystal (AFLC) mixtures targeted to modern photonic devices. Here, we show the design and physicochemical properties of novel dimers which are characterized by low melting points, high tilt angles and spontaneous polarizations, temperature-stable helical structures, and reasonably broad temperature ranges of ferroelectric or antiferroelectric phases. These features have facilitated the effective use of one dimer as a dopant in AFLCs. This eliminates the primary drawback of the electro-optical effect based on the surface-stabilised geometry of AFLCs by strongly promoting the anticlinic state in this effect. Importantly, for the first time, the above can be achieved without affecting any other physicochemical or optical properties of AFLCs. Thus, the obtained results represent a pivotal link between the longstanding concept of developing AFLCs that meet the stringent requirements for electro-optical effects based on surface-stabilised geometry and the realization of novel photonic devices demonstrating all the benefits of this effect.

Effect of lateral substituents on the properties of polymerisable liquid crystals with bistolane core

ABSTRACT A new series of polymerisable liquid crystals based on bistolane core and different lateral substituent groups (F, Cl, CH3 and C2H5) were synthesised and characterised by1H-NMR and13C-NMR. The properties of these compounds were tested by DSC, POM and Abbe refractometer. The results indicate that all of these compounds display a stable nematic phase, and the introduction of lateral substituents has a significant impact on the phase behaviour and birefringence. As the size of lateral substituents gradually increases the clearing point and birefringence of the liquid crystals both show a decreasing trend. The birefringence of these new compounds reaches 0.36 ~ 0.49, which is about 2 ~ 3 times that of the commercial compounds RM257. These new polymerisable liquid crystals with extremely high birefringence provide a choice for developing devices based on planar optics.

Synthesis and properties of chiral liquid crystal copolymers with tunable circularly polarized luminescence

Chiral liquid crystals have received widespread attention due to their unique advantages in improving circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) properties. However, how to achieve the emission and modulation of CPL for chiral liquid crystals within intrinsic polymer-based materials through a simple strategy remains a challenge. This article proposes a simple and feasible method to synthesize CPL chiral liquid crystals and manipulate their properties by copolymerizing chiral liquid crystal monomer with luminescent monomer. A series of intrinsic chiral luminescent liquid crystal copolymers C*(x)-Py(y) with tunable CPL performance were synthesized by copolymerizing chiral liquid crystal monomer MA6C* with pyrene-based luminescent monomer MC6Py in varying ratios. The effective control of the chiral liquid crystal phase structure and CPL performance of the copolymers C*(x)-Py(y) can be achieved by altering the composition of copolymers. In the copolymers, the CPL signal is generated due to the helix induction of pyrene chromophores by the chiral liquid crystals, and the CPL signal can be inverted and amplified by the unique selective reflection properties of chiral liquid crystals. For copolymer C*(0.75)-Py(0.25), the luminescence dissymmetry factor value and solid-state fluorescence quantum yield can reach −0.052 and 43.12%, respectively.

New graphene oxide doped polymer dispersed liquid crystal nanocomposites targeted to eco-friendly and energy-efficient smart windows

Graphene oxide-polymer dispersed liquid crystal (GO-PDLC) composites are proposed as a solution for energy-efficient switchable windows. These composites were prepared by incorporating varying concentrations of graphene oxide (GO) into a mixture of nematic liquid crystal (E7) and a UV–Vis curable resin using the polymerization-induced phase separation technique. The results indicate that the dispersion of GO at an optimum concentration of 0.005 wt% significantly affects the morphology, phase transition temperatures, and electro-optic properties of polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC). In particular, the GO-PDLC composites exhibit a transition from an opaque to a transparent state at a remarkably low voltage (∼11.5 V) compared to pure PDLC cell. Dielectric analysis reveals that adding GO increases the permittivity, conductivity, and dielectric strength of PDLC composites. Moreover, the Cole-Cole plot indicates a non-Debye type relaxation in a higher frequency region. Furthermore, a blue shift in emission wavelength and enhanced photoluminescence intensity suggest alterations in electronic transitions within the composites. This comprehensive study provides valuable insights into optimizing the properties of PDLCs through the dispersion of GO, thereby offering promising prospects for their utilization in various optoelectronic applications.

Smart design of highly luminescent octupolar mesogenic tetra styryl-alkynyl bipyrimidine-based chromophores presenting non-linear optical properties

The research investigations reported in this paper focuses on the influence of rational design on the photophysical properties of new all-organic multifunctional chromophores. Nonlinear optical (NLO) behavior, optical properties and mesogenicity of several new π-conjugated octupolar chromophores, presenting alkoxy styryl-alkynyl donor groups carrying aliphatic achiral and chiral chains in the 3,4/3,5/2,4 position, connected to electron-accepting 2,2-bipyrimidine cores are investigated by various techniques (light-transmission measurements, polarized-light optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry measurements, two-photon excited fluorescence and Hyper Rayleigh Scattering). The mesogenic properties were investigated depending on the position of the alkoxy chain and the 3,4 derivatives were found to exhibit liquid-crystal properties with the formation columnar phases over large temperature ranges which were confirmed by small-angle X-ray scattering analysis. All the molecules exhibit exceptional high fluorescence quantum yields values around 80 % and excellent nonlinear optical properties.

Systematic study of chromonic liquid crystal-based complex emulsions and their application in the preparation of silica nanomaterials

Multiple triphasic emulsions constitute versatile templates for the preparation of complex particles and capsules. In these emulsions the volume fractions and interfacial tensions between the phases dictate the droplet morphology, enabling various morphologies such as Janus, core-shell and snowman droplets. In this article, we describe the preparation of all-aqueous water-in-water (W/W) emulsions composed by a perylene-based chromonic liquid crystal and a hydrophilic polymer. This combination yields emulsions with liquid crystalline droplets exhibiting diverse configurations of the director, including the formation of twisted structures, from achiral mesogens. Three-phase multiple emulsions with various morphologies were obtained by the emulsification of W/W emulsions in either another aqueous phase or in hexadecane. The resulting droplet morphologies depended on the composition of the system. Furthermore, hollow silica particles with a chromonic-templated microporous structure were prepared via a sol−gel reaction within the liquid crystalline phase of water-in-water-in-oil emulsions. These findings show how the unique templating properties of chromonic liquid crystals can be applied to all-aqueous emulsions for the synthesis of complex silica particles, with a controlled structure both at the micro- and nanoscale.

Preparation and optical properties of one-dimensional magnetically oriented halloysite@Fe3O4 nanomaterials

Clay minerals with composite magnetic particles offer potential as magnetically oriented nanomaterials for application in inorganic liquid crystals. However, the instability of magnetically oriented clay@Fe3O4 materials, caused by the easy detachment of Fe3O4 particles from the clay minerals surfaces and the corrosivity of the HCl dispersant on Fe3O4 particles, has limited their development. In this work, hollow tubular halloysite (Hal) was used as the carrier for Fe3O4 particles to obtain halloysite@Fe3O4 (Hal@Fe3O4), in which Fe3O4 particles were uniformly coated on the outer surface of Hal and located in the Hal tubular lumen. In addition, LiCl was employed as a dispersant instead of HCl in Hal@Fe3O4 dispersions. They collaboratively enhanced the stability of magnetically oriented Hal@Fe3O4 nanomaterials compared to magnetically oriented palygorskite@Fe3O4 nanomaterials. The stable one-dimensional magnetically oriented Hal@Fe3O4 nanomaterials demonstrated liquid crystal properties that were adjustable by a magnetic field, and photonic crystal properties. As a result, these functional materials could be used in many fields, such as inorganic liquid crystals, photonic crystals, and photonic switches.

Difluorinated tolane-based photoluminescent liquid crystals with imidazolium salt-terminated flexible chains: Thermophysical and photophysical properties

Photoluminescent liquid crystal (PLLC) molecules have attracted significant interest because they exhibit both photoluminescent (PL) and liquid crystal (LC) properties within a single-composition molecular system. In the quest to develop PLLC molecules, researchers have explored ionic compounds incorporating ionic moieties in flexible chains or mesogenic structures. Notable examples include disk-shaped columnar PLLCs and smectic (Sm) PLLCs, which exhibit distinct layers of ionic moieties, counterions, and luminescent mesogens. Ionic LC molecules exhibiting the Sm phase at low temperatures and whose phase transition temperatures can be modulated by tuning the ionic moiety show promise as PLLCs. However, reports on Sm PLLC molecules remain scarce. Based on previous findings that difluorinated tolanes can emit fluorescence in the crystalline (Cr) state, we explored their potential as luminescent mesogens for the development of efficient Sm PLLC compounds. In this study, we designed a rod-shaped compound featuring a difluorinated tolane skeleton as a luminescent mesogen, a decyleneoxy chain for stabilizing the LC phase, and an imidazolium ion as an ionic moiety at the chain end to induce the smectic A (SmA) phase. Upon investigating their thermophysical properties, all compounds demonstrated thermotropic LC attributes and contained a SmA phase. Notably, the melting temperature decreased with increasing anion volume. Photophysical property evaluation revealed that the compounds displayed blue photoluminescence in both dilute solutions and Cr states, with no counteranion-dependent variations in photoluminescence observed in the solution. However, the photoluminescence behavior in the Cr-state specimens varies with different counteranions, demonstrating an increased photoluminescence wavelength with increasing anion volume. Furthermore, the Cr ⇄ LC phase transition altered the photoluminescence behavior, highlighting the potential of our molecular design strategy for developing temperature-responsive PL materials. These findings provide valuable insights for designing new PLLC molecules that can serve as effective fluorescent sensors across a range of temperatures, including room temperature.

Dynamic Dipole Moment of Luminescent Liquid Crystals Enabled Highly Efficient Active Waveguide Materials Design and Synthesis

AbstractOrganic optical waveguide materials have attracted considerable attention for their promising applications in photonic and optoelectronic devices. However, for most materials, excellent light‐loss properties at high temperature cannot be obtained due to many factors. Consequently, realizing efficient optical waveguide materials that perform well at elevated temperatures remains a significant challenge. In this study, relying on the luminescent properties and self‐assembly properties of luminescent liquid crystals (LLCs), successfully fabricated materials are present for highly efficient active optical waveguides. A systematically synthesized set of LLCs with different structures is named according to the substituent type and the position of the cyano group, namely α‐DECN, α‐DEEOCN, β‐DECN, and β‐DEEOCN. Notably, α‐DECN and β‐DECN reveal hexagonal columnar phase, while α‐DEEOCN and β‐DEEOCN exhibit smectic phase. Optical waveguide experiments have revealed that the obtained LLCs showed highly efficient optical waveguide behavior, where the lowest light loss reached 0.15 dB mm−1 at room temperature. Remarkably, these LLCs show even lower light loss at high temperatures, with the light loss reaching 0.11 dB mm−1 as the lowest point. Further experimental results indicate that this phenomenon is attributed to the change in the dipole moment of these molecules. This research forms a significant groundwork for advanced exploration in optical waveguide material.

Water structural effects on DNA–DNA interactions and homologous recognition

Comprehending the principles underlying the interaction between DNA molecules in electrolyte solution is of crucial importance for understanding the phenomena of DNA condensation, recognition of homologous genes, and properties of DNA liquid crystals. Although DNA was considered in all its helical complexity over the last two decades, only a primitive, local, electrostatic model of the aqueous solution was considered. The forces acting between DNA molecules however must be influenced by the structure of the liquid separating them. In this paper we make a step towards unravelling earlier neglected effects of water structure on DNA–DNA interactions. We develop a model of DNA interaction accounting for the nonlocal dielectric response of water and of the electrolyte plasma dissolved in it. We focus particularly on the study of the dipolar overscreening effect, which leads to decaying oscillations of the electrostatic potential about DNA, and how it will affect electrostatic energy surfaces as a function of interaxial separation and mutual azimuthal orientation of the parallelly aligned interacting DNAs. We found that going beyond the classical electrostatic description of water (the so-called primitive model) reveals a complex oscillatory interaction surface in space, with many possible metastable configurations. These however vanish rapidly with smearing of the DNA charge distribution, due to dephasing of the oscillatory components of the interaction. This dephasing results in the suppression of oscillation amplitudes and leads to the dominance of non-oscillatory components in spatial dipolar correlations and the Debye screening. These dominant correlation patterns are shown to lead to a substantial enhancement of the difference between the interaction of homologous and nonhomologous DNA sequences, deepening and sharpening the homology recognition well.

Effect of SiO2-doped nanoparticle/electrostatic spinning system on the electro-optical properties of polymer dispersed liquid crystals for smart windows

ABSTRACT Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal (PDLC) films are attracting increasing attention as versatile and innovative material for use in electrical switching and flexible devices. This paper investigates the effect of a Poly(methyl methacrylate (PMMA) nanospun membrane system doped with SiO2 nanoparticles on the electro-optical properties and transmittance/voltage slopes of thiol- and acrylate-based PDLC films. Experimental samples were prepared for testing by adding mixtures of liquid crystals and crosslinkers in different proportions to liquid crystal cassettes doped with PMMA/SiO2 nanospun membranes. The size of the polymer mesh was found to influence all parameters of PDLC. The phase separation process, which determines the morphology and electro-optical properties of PDLC films, is directly affected by the doping of different components of PMMA/SiO2. The doping of the PMMA/SiO2 system resulted in improved optoelectronic properties of PDLC films, significantly enhanced weathering resistance, and increased the degree of intelligent regulation of the transmittance of PDLC films. Thus, by developing PDLC-doped reticulated nanofibre films with faster response times and better electro-optical properties, the potential for technological applications of PDLC-based devices in optical windows, displays, energy storage and flexible devices can be significantly enhanced.

Effect of different surface alignment layers and temperature changes on bandwidth of Bragg reflection in chiral nematic liquid crystal

In recent years, the practical properties of cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs) have been widely studied due to their unique feature of selective Bragg reflection. In this study, we investigated the following aspects: (i) the effect of surface alignment using polyvinyl alcohol, polyamide, and polyimide as covering substrate, (ii) the impact of temperature changes on the reflection bandwidth and, consequently, variations in the cholesteric pitch. Furthermore, we extended Li’s four-parameter model to the cholesteric environment using Haller’s assumption and Vuk’s equations for nematic liquid crystals (NLCs) and Fergason’s theory for CLCs. The fit of the experimental data with this model demonstrated an excellent agreement. The experimental data revealed that the S5011 chiral dopant, with left-handedness, used in the NLC environment of the host, exhibits a significant helical twist power (HTP). This leads to the narrowing of the reflection band width with increasing temperature, without causing a noticeable change in the wavelength of the central reflection. This feature highlights the high potential of these types of chiral materials as thermally stable materials for creating selective-reflective optical filters that remain stable with temperature changes, particularly away from the cholesteric to isotropic transition point.

Influence of proteins on the dielectric characteristics of 5CB and 8CB liquid crystals

ABSTRACT In this paper, we study the influence of the protein Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) on the dielectric properties of liquid crystals (LCs) such as 4-cyano-4-pentyl biphenyl (5CB) and Octyl-4-biphenylcarbonitrile (8CB). Studying the effect of proteins on the dielectric properties of LC is essential for both fundamental research and practical applications in material science, biomedical engineering, biotechnology, and optoelectronic devices. It helps understand the protein behaviour on the surface of LCs, which offers an opportunity to develop novel sensing platforms. A polarising optical microscope (POM) was used to examine the correlation between textures formed by LCs interacting with different concentrations of BSA. In the dielectric studies, dielectric parameters such as impedance (Z), real (Z’) and imaginary (Z’’) parts of the impedance, and the tangential loss (tan δ) were measured. The investigation involved analysing relaxation times using the collected data, revealing distinct behaviours between 5CB and 8CB liquid crystals. Bode and Nyquist’s plots were constructed and analysed to investigate the changes LCs undergo while interacting with BSA. An equivalent electrical circuit (EEC) was constructed using Bode and Nyquist data, from which circuit element values were successfully extracted. The results obtained from the POM studies and the interferences drawn from the EIS can help enhance the performance of protein-based liquid crystal devices.

Effects of ion doping on the dielectric and electro-optical properties of chiral nematic liquid crystal

This study presents experimental findings pertaining to the use of the cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as a dopant dispersed in cholesteric liquid crystal. The impact of the additive on the electrical and dielectric properties was investigated by dielectric spectroscopy. Compared with that in the pure counterpart, the dielectric relaxation frequency increased due to the added ions in the cholesteric liquid crystals impregnated with 0.01–0.5-wt% CTAB. Furthermore, by analyzing the dielectric spectra in a specific frequency range, the DC conductivity, ion density, and diffusion coefficient were calculated and compared. By fitting the experimental data into the Arrhenius equation, the activation energy was obtained as well. Our experimental results illustrated that all these physical properties were strongly dependent on the CTAB concentration and the temperature. This work also involved the electro-optical measurement in combination with the observation of optical texture. The ion addition provoked electrohydrodynamic flows in a surfactant-dispersed mixture, generating a homogeneous and transparent uniform lying helix state between two low-transmission optical states—the focal conic and dynamic scattering states. The operating frequency range of the dynamic scattering state was significantly broadened by the ionic dopant.

Biphenyls embedded Schiff base-bis esters: self-assembling behaviour, impact of additional aromatic ring and ester linkage and their DFT investigations

ABSTRACT In the present investigation, two series of biphenyl embedded Schiff base-bis esters alkyl-(E)-4-(((4’-(decyloxy)-[1,1’-biphenyl]-4-yl)methylene)amino)-benzoate, BPK-(2–18) and alkyl-(E)-4-(((4’-((4-(decyloxy)benzoyl)oxy)-[1,1’-biphenyl]-4-yl)-methylene)amino)benzoate, BPEK-(8–18) containing either terminal alkoxy biphenyl core or central biphenyl core have been synthesised and studied for their self-assembling behaviour. The compounds of both series demonstrated enantiotropic liquid crystal properties, displaying typical calamitic mesophases (Smectic A (SmA), Smectic C (SmC)) across a broad temperature range and with high thermal stability. The bimorphic behaviour of new molecules has been investigated by VT-XRD analysis. The density function theory has been done to illustrate the experimental results of the mesomorphic properties of the studied compounds. Several parameters have been calculated such as molecular geometry, dipole moment, polarisability, aspect ratio, etc. The results showed that more planar compounds will attain more packed structures leading to the formation of more ordered smectic phases.
