Magnetoacoustic cutoff effect in numerical simulations of thepartially ionized solar atmosphere.

The cutoff effect is a significant determinant of solar magnetohydrodynamic wave propagation and hence pivotal in energy transfer studies, such as solar plasma heating and seismological diagnostics. Despite continuous efforts, no good agreement between observed waveperiods and theory or numerical simulations was found. Our objective is to investigate the magnetoacoustic cutoff effect in the partially ionized solar atmosphere, factoring in the two-fluid effects. We developed a two-fluid MHD numerical model and used it to simulate a quiet region of the Sun from the top of the convective zone to the low corona. Our findings show that the ongoing granulation excites a wide range of waves propagating into the upper atmospheric layers. The cutoff waveperiods strongly depend on the height. Two-fluid waveperiods obtained with numerical simulations reproduce the recent observations at avery good level of compliance. Furthermore, direct comparison with strongly coupled cases that imitate the single-fluid approximation have shown that the waveperiod propagation pattern is only present in fully two-fluid simulations. We conclude that the presence of neutrals and therefore collisional terms change the dynamics of the magnetized plasma, in comparison with the single-fluid approximation. This effect is more prominently seen in the upper photosphere and chromosphere. Wave modes and instabilities in gravitating magnetized polytropic quantum plasmas including viscosity tensor and FLR corrections

ABSTRACT The present analytical study extends the problems of pressure anisotropy-driven instabilities and gravitational instability in space plasmas to mixed quantum polytropic gas in the interior of dense stars accounting for the effects of viscosity, finite Larmor radius (FLR) and self-gravitational effects. The generalized polytrope pressure laws are considered as adiabatic equations in which the pressure components depend upon the plasma density, magnitude of the magnetic field, and the polytrope indices. The modified properties of waves and instabilities in gravitating quantum plasmas have been analysed using the quantum magnetohydrodynamic (QMHD) fluid description in the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) and Chew–Goldberger–Low (CGL) limits. In the parallel propagation, the Jeans instability modified by quantum diffraction parameters and firehose mode modified by FLR parameter is obtained separately. The Jeans instability condition depends upon the quantum diffraction term and polytrope index β, and it remains unaffected due to viscosity and ion Larmor frequency. The growth rate of the Jeans instability decreases due to viscosity and quantum diffraction parameters, while the growth rate of the firehose instability increases due to FLR corrections. In the transverse mode, a similar nature is observed in the growth rates; however, the instability region decreases significantly due to polytrope indices and different dispersion properties of MHD and CGL viscous quantum plasmas. The analytical results have been applied in dense degenerate stars to measure the characteristic parameters and understand the MHD wave propagation, pressure anisotropy-driven, and gravitationally driven instabilities.

The geomagnetic effects of falling meteors have been known for a long time, but so far they have not received a complete theoretical explanation. The paper considers the response of the geomagnetic field to the destruction of meteors in Yakutia (March 4, 2014, 21:29 UT) and Khakassia (December 6, 2016) according to the Irkutsk magnetic observatory data of the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics SB RAS. The analysis of variations in the geomagnetic field components showed that the passages and explosions of meteors were accompanied by the appearance of several groups of geomagnetic disturbances in the area of the Irkutsk magnetic observatory. Their appearance can be caused by the propagation of shock, internal gravity and magnetohydrodynamic waves formed as a result of the passages and destructions of meteors. The periods of these wave disturbances and the velocities of their propagation from the generation regions are estimated. It is noted that noticeable wave manifestations in the geomagnetic field give waves with a period of more than 10 minutes, i.e. having gravity modes.

Neutrino magnetohydrodynamic instabilities in presence of two-flavor oscillations

The influence of neutrino flavor oscillations on the propagation of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves and instabilities is studied in neutrino-beam driven magnetoplasmas. Using the neutrino MHD model, a general dispersion relation is derived which manifests the resonant interactions of MHD waves, not only with the neutrino beam, but also with the neutrino flavor oscillations. It is found that the latter contribute to the wave dispersion and enhance the magnitude of the instability of oblique magnetosonic waves. However, the shear-Alfvén wave remains unaffected by the neutrino beam and neutrino flavor oscillations. Such an enhancement of the magnitude of the instability of magnetosonic waves can be significant for relatively long-wavelength perturbations in the regimes of high neutrino number density and/or strong magnetic field, giving a convincing mechanism for type-II core-collapse supernova explosion.

Transverse Oscillations of the M87 Jet Revealed by KaVA Observations

Recent VLBI monitoring has found transverse motions of the M87 jet. However, due to the limited cadence of previous observations, details of the transverse motion have not been fully revealed yet. We have regularly monitored the M87 jet at KVN and VERA Array (KaVA) 22 GHz from December 2013 to June 2016. The average time interval of the observation is ∼0.1 year, which is suitable for tracking short-term structural changes. From these observations, the M87 jet is well represented by double ridge lines in the region 2–12 mas from the core. We found that the ridge lines exhibit transverse oscillations in all observed regions with an average period of 0.94±0.12 years. When the sinusoidal fit is performed, we found that the amplitude of this oscillation is an order of ∼0.1 mas, and the oscillations in the northern and southern limbs are almost in phase. Considering the amplitude, it does not originate from Earth’s parallax. We propose possible scenarios of the transverse oscillation, such as the propagation of jet instabilities or magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) waves or perturbed mass injection around magnetically dominated accretion flows.

Supernova-remnant origin of the Galactic-Centre filaments

ABSTRACT The mechanism to produce the numerous Galactic-Centre filaments (GCFs) that vertically penetrate the Galactic plane without clear evidence of connection to the disc remains a mystery. Here, we show that the GCFs are explained by relics of supernova remnants (rSNRs) driven by hundreds of supernovae (SNe) that exploded in the star-forming ring of the central molecular zone at an SN rate of ∼2 × 10−4 yr−1 in the past ∼0.5 Myr. The evolution of rSNRs is simulated by the propagation of fast-mode magnetohydrodynamic waves, which are shown to converge around the Galactic rotation axis by the focusing effect. Tangential projection of the cylindrical wavefronts on the sky constitutes the vertical filaments. The SNR model explains not only the morphology, but also the non-thermal radio spectrum, smoothed brightness over the distribution area consistent with the Σ–D relation of SNR, and the heating mechanism of hot plasma. We discuss the implication of the SNR model on the study of the interstellar physics in the Galactic Centre and star-formation activity.

Stirring the base of the solar wind: On heat transfer and vortex formation

Context.Current models of the solar wind must approximate (or ignore) the small-scale dynamics within the solar atmosphere; however, these are likely important in shaping the emerging wave-turbulence spectrum that ultimately heats and accelerates the coronal plasma.Aims.This study strives to make connections between small-scale vortex motions at the base of the solar wind and the resulting heating and acceleration of the coronal plasma.Methods.TheBifrostcode produces realistic simulations of the solar atmosphere which facilitate the analysis of spatial and temporal scales which are currently at, or beyond, the limit of modern solar telescopes. For this study, theBifrostsimulation is configured to represent the solar atmosphere in a coronal hole region, from which the fast solar wind emerges. The simulation extends from the upper-convection zone (2.5 Mm below the photosphere) to the low corona (14.5 Mm above the photosphere), with a horizontal extent of 24 Mm × 24 Mm. The network of magnetic funnels in the computational domain influence the movement of plasma, as well as the propagation of magnetohydrodynamic waves into the low corona.Results.The twisting of the coronal magnetic field by photospheric flows efficiently injects energy into the low corona. Poynting fluxes of up to 2 − 4 kWm−2are commonly observed inside twisted magnetic structures with diameters in the low corona of 1–5 Mm. Torsional Alfvén waves are favourably transmitted along these structures, and subsequently escape into the solar wind. However, reflections of these waves from the upper boundary condition make it difficult to unambiguously quantify the emerging Alfvén wave-energy flux.Conclusions.This study represents a first step in quantifying the conditions at the base of the solar wind usingBifrostsimulations. It is shown that the coronal magnetic field is readily braided and twisted by photospheric flows. Temperature and density contrasts form between regions with active stirring motions and those without. Stronger whirlpool-like flows in the convection, concurrent with magnetic concentrations, launch torsional Alfvén waves up through the magnetic funnel network, which are expected to enhance the turbulent generation of magnetic switchbacks in the solar wind.

Magnetohydrodynamic Waves in an Asymmetric Magnetic Slab with Different External Flows

Building on recent studies of the Kelvin–Helmholtz instability (KHI) in the solar atmosphere, we investigate a simple analytical model that can further our understanding of how the presence of bulk flows influences the propagation of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves. Our model builds on a series of recent works on stationary MHD waveguides and looks at a magnetic slab with a density asymmetry, as well as asymmetric background steady flows present in its environment. We obtained approximate solutions to the dispersion relation for the important and applicable limiting cases of a thin or a wide slab, as well as low- and high-β plasmas. We also explored the relation between the angular frequency of trapped MHD waves, the limit for the onset of the KHI, and small parameters describing the flow and density asymmetries. Our analytical investigation is complemented by a numerical analysis for various bulk flow speeds and slab widths. Both these avenues of study reveal that the flow field asymmetry has an important effect on both the cutoff frequencies and the stability of trapped MHD waves in the slab configuration.

Small-scale solar jet formation and their associated waves and instabilities

Studies on small-scale jets’ formation, propagation, evolution, and role, such as type I and II spicules, mottles, and fibrils in the lower solar atmosphere’s energetic balance, have progressed tremendously thanks to the combination of detailed observations and sophisticated mathematical modelling. This review provides a survey of the current understanding of jets, their formation in the solar lower atmosphere, and their evolution from observational, numerical, and theoretical perspectives. First, we review some results to describe the jet properties, acquired numerically, analytically and through high-spatial and temporal resolution observations. Further on, we discuss the role of hydrodynamic and magnetohydrodynamic instabilities, namely Rayleigh–Taylor and Kelvin–Helmholtz instabilities, in jet evolution and their role in the energy transport through the solar atmosphere in fully and partially ionised plasmas. Finally, we discuss several mechanisms of magnetohydrodynamic wave generation, propagation, and energy transport in the context of small-scale solar jets in detail. This review identifies several gaps in the understanding of small-scale solar jets and some misalignments between the observational studies and knowledge acquired through theoretical studies and numerical modelling. It is to be expected that these gaps will be closed with the advent of high-resolution observational instruments, such as Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope, Solar Orbiter, Parker Solar Probe, and Solar CubeSats for Linked Imaging Spectropolarimetry, combined with further theoretical and computational developments.

Ray Tracing of MHD Rossby Waves in the Solar Tachocline: Meridional Propagation and Implications for the Solar Magnetic Activity

Rossby waves have been recently recognised for their role in the large-scale spatio-temporal organisation of the solar magnetic activity. Here, we study the propagation of magnetohydrodynamic Rossby waves in a thin layer, representing the solar tachocline. We consider the waves embedded in a meridionally varying background state characterised by a mean zonal flow, which mimics the differential rotation profile of the Sun, and a toroidal magnetic field. Two anti-symmetric toroidal magnetic fields are utilised: one having a global structure with the maximum at around 50o and the other characterised by a narrow band centered at around 20o. We show that for a global structure toroidal magnetic field, the MHD Rossby modes undergo significant meridional propagation, either equatorward or poleward. In addition, the latitude where the waves exhibit a stationary behaviour is sensitive to the strength of the background magnetic field. On the other hand, a narrow band toroidal magnetic field is shown to work as a waveguide for the fast branch of MHD Rossby waves.

3D MHD wave propagation near a coronal null point: New wave mode decomposition approach

Context. Ubiquitous vortex flows at the solar surface excite magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves that propagate to higher layers of the solar atmosphere. In the solar corona, these waves frequently encounter magnetic null points. The interaction of MHD waves with a coronal magnetic null in realistic 3D setups requires an appropriate wave identification method. Aims. We present a new MHD wave decomposition method that overcomes the limitations of existing wave identification methods. Our method allows for an investigation of the energy fluxes in different MHD modes at different locations of the solar atmosphere as waves generated by vortex flows travel through the solar atmosphere and pass near the magnetic null. Methods. We used the open-source MPI-AMRVAC code to simulate wave dynamics through a coronal null configuration. We applied a rotational wave driver at our bottom photospheric boundary to mimic vortex flows at the solar surface. To identify the wave energy fluxes associated with different MHD wave modes, we employed a wave decomposition method that is able to uniquely distinguish different MHD modes. Our proposed method utilizes the geometry of an individual magnetic field-line in the 3D space to separate the velocity perturbations associated with the three fundamental MHD waves. We compared our method with an existing wave decomposition method that uses magnetic flux surfaces instead. Over the selected flux surfaces, we calculated and analyzed the temporally averaged wave energy fluxes, as well as the acoustic and magnetic energy fluxes. Our wave decomposition method allowed us to estimate the relative strengths of individual MHD wave energy fluxes. Results. Our method for wave identification is consistent with previous flux-surface-based methods and provides the expected results in terms of the wave energy fluxes at various locations of the null configuration. We show that ubiquitous vortex flows excite MHD waves that contribute significantly to the Poynting flux in the solar corona. Alfvén wave energy flux accumulates on the fan surface and fast wave energy flux accumulates near the null point. There is a strong current density buildup at the spine and fan surface. Conclusions. The proposed method has advantages over previously utilized wave decomposition methods, since it may be employed in realistic simulations or magnetic extrapolations, as well as in real solar observations whenever the 3D fieldline shape is known. The essential characteristics of MHD wave propagation near a null – such as wave energy flux accumulation and current buildup at specific locations – translate to the more realistic setup presented here. The enhancement in energy flux associated with magneto-acoustic waves near nulls may have important implications in the formation of jets and impulsive plasma flows.

Magnetosonic waves in ion trapped semiconductor chip plasma with effect of exchange correlation potential and relativistic degeneracy

The generalized dispersion relation for the propagation of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves in Cd+ ion trapped semiconductor electron-hole-ion plasmas is studied with effect of quantum corrections. The important ingredients of these corrections occurred due to Bohm potential, relativistic degeneracy, exchange-correlation potential and spin magnetization and have significant impact on the dispersion properties of perpendicular and oblique modes of MHD wave. The derived results are numerically analyzed by using the numerical parameters of GaAs, GaSb, GaN, and InP semiconductors plasmas. From the numerical analysis it is observed that for higher number density, the phase speed of magnetosonic wave is larger for the InP semiconductor, while for low number density plasma region, it gives lower values for GaAs semiconductor. Similarly the phase speed of magnetosonic wave for GaAs decreases with applied magnetic field for different regime of number density. Due to exchange-correlation potential it is found that the frequencies of magnetosonic waves are blue-shifted means that it has magnified the phase speed. It is also shown that frequency of oblique MHD wave for GaAs semiconductor plasmas increases (decreases) with number density of electrons (holes). The relativistic degeneracy term (γ) for given number density is numerically calculated (1.00011 ∼ 1.0058) for all the above-mentioned semiconductors and it is observed that due to its mild numerical value it has not significant impact on graphical manipulation. The Alfven speed for above compound semiconductors with B 0 ≤ 104 G is also calculated which are in the permissible range of order 104 cm/s to 107 cm/s. The results are helpful to understand the energy transport in semiconductor plasma in the presence of magnetic field.

A Study of Sunspot 3 Minute Oscillations Using ALMA and GST

Abstract Waves and oscillations are important solar phenomena, not only because they can propagate and dissipate energy in the chromosphere, but also because they carry information about the structure of the atmosphere in which they propagate. The nature of the 3 minute oscillations observed in the umbral region of sunspots is considered to be an effect of propagation of magnetohydrodynamic waves upward from below the photosphere. We present a study of sunspot oscillations and wave propagation in NOAA Active Region 12470 using an approximately 1 hr long data set acquired on 2015 December 17 by the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), the Goode Solar Telescope (GST) operating at the Big Bear Solar Observatory, the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly on board the Solar Dynamics Observatory, and the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph. The ALMA data are unique in providing a time series of direct temperature measurements in the sunspot chromosphere. The 2 s cadence of ALMA images allows us to well resolve the 3 minute periods typical of sunspot oscillations in the chromosphere. Fourier analysis is applied to ALMA Band 3 (∼100 GHz, ∼3 mm) and GST Hα data sets to obtain power spectra as well as oscillation phase information. We analyzed properties of the wave propagation by combining multiple wavelengths that probe physical parameters of solar atmosphere at different heights. We find that the ALMA temperature fluctuations are consistent with that expected for a propagating acoustic wave, with a slight asymmetry indicating nonlinear steepening.

I. The effect of symmetric and spatially varying equilibria and flow on MHD wave modes: slab geometry

ABSTRACT Realistic theoretical models of magnetohydrodynamic wave propagation in the different solar magnetic configurations are required to explain observational results, allowing magnetoseismology to be conducted and provide more accurate information about local plasma properties. The numerical approach described in this paper allows a dispersion diagram to be obtained for any arbitrary symmetric magnetic slab model of solar atmospheric features. This proposed technique implements the shooting method to match necessary boundary conditions on continuity of displacement and total pressure of the waveguide. The algorithm also implements fundamental physical knowledge of the sausage and kink modes such that both can be investigated. The dispersion diagrams for a number of analytic cases that model magnetohydrodynamic waves in a magnetic slab were successfully reproduced. This work is then extended by considering density structuring modelled as a series of Gaussian profiles and a sinc(x) function. A further case study investigates properties of MHD wave modes in a coronal slab with a non-uniform background plasma flow, for which the governing equations are derived. It is found that the dispersive properties of slow body modes are more greatly altered than those of fast modes when any equilibrium inhomogeneity is increased, including background flow. The spatial structure of the eigenfunctions is also modified, introducing extra nodes and points of inflexion that may be of interest to observers.

Effect of coronal loop structure on wave heating through phase mixing

Context. The mechanism(s) behind coronal heating still elude(s) direct observation and modelling of viable theoretical processes and the subsequent effect on coronal structures is one of the key tools available to assess possible heating mechanisms. Wave heating via the phase mixing of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) transverse waves has been proposed as a possible way to convert magnetic energy into thermal energy, but MHD models increasingly suggest this is not an efficient enough mechanism. Aims. We modelled heating by phase mixing transverse MHD waves in various configurations in order to investigate whether certain circumstances can enhance the heating sufficiently to sustain the million degree solar corona and to assess the impact of the propagation and phase mixing of transverse MHD waves on the structure of the boundary shell of coronal loops. Methods. We used 3D MHD simulations of a pre-existing density enhancement in a magnetised medium and a boundary driver to trigger the propagation of transverse waves with the same power spectrum as measured by the Coronal Multi-Channel Polarimeter. We consider different density structures, boundary conditions at the non-drive footpoint, characteristics of the driver, and different forms of magnetic resistivity. Results. We find that different initial density structures significantly affect the evolution of the boundary shell and that some driver configurations can enhance the heating generated from the dissipation of the MHD waves. In particular, drivers coherent on a larger spatial scale and higher dissipation coefficients can generate significant heating, although it is still insufficient to balance the radiative losses in this setup. Conclusions. We conclude that while phase mixing of transverse MHD waves is unlikely to sustain the thermal structure of the corona, there are configurations that allow for an enhanced efficiency of this mechanism. We provide possible signatures to identify the presence of such configurations, such as the location of where the heating is deposited along the coronal loop.

Simulations of MHD Wave Propagation and Coupling in a 3‐D Magnetosphere

AbstractA novel simulation grid is devised that is optimized for studying magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) wave coupling and phase mixing in a dipole‐like magnetic field. The model also includes flaring on the dawn and dusk flanks. The location of the magnetopause is quite general. In particular, it does not have to coincide with a coordinate surface. Simulations indicate the central role of global fast waveguide modes. These switch from being azimuthally standing in nature at noon, to propagating antisunward on the flanks. The field line resonances (FLRs) seen in the simulation results are three dimensional and not strictly azimuthally polarized. When a plume is present, the FLRs cross a range of 2 in shell, and have a polarization that is midway between toroidal and poloidal.

The Formation and Dissipation of Current Sheets and Shocks due to Compressive Waves in a Stratified Atmosphere Containing a Magnetic Null

We study the propagation and dissipation of magnetohydrodynamic waves in a set of numerical models that each include a solar--like stratified atmosphere and a magnetic field with a null point. All simulations have the same magnetic field configuration but different transition region heights. Compressive wave packets introduced in the photospheric portion of the simulations refract towards the null and collapse it into a current sheet, which then undergoes reconnection. The collapsed null forms a current sheet due to a strong magnetic pressure gradient caused by the inability of magnetic perturbations to cross the null. Although the null current sheet undergoes multiple reconnection episodes due to repeated reflections off the lower boundary, we find no evidence of oscillatory reconnection arising from the dynamics of the null itself. Wave mode conversion around the null generates a series of slow mode shocks localized near each separatrix. The shock strength is asymmetric across each separatrix, and subsequent shock damping therefore creates a tangential discontinuity across each separatrix, with long--lived current densities. A parameter study of the injected wave energy to reach the null confirms our previous WKB estimates. Finally, using current estimates of the photospheric acoustic power, we estimate that the shock and Ohmic heating we describe may account for $\approx1-10\%$ of the radiative losses from coronal bright points with similar topologies, and are similarly insufficient to account for losses from larger structures such as ephemeral regions. At the same time, the dynamics are comparable to proposed mechanisms for generating type--II spicules.

Magnetohydrodynamic Waves in Multi-Layered Asymmetric Waveguides: Solar Magneto-Seismology Theory and Application

Diagnosing the solar atmospheric plasma is one of the major challenges in solar physics. Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves, by means of applying the powerful concept of solar magneto-seismology (SMS), provide a tool to obtain diagnostic insight into the magnetised solar plasma in MHD waveguides. This paper provides a road-map of simple but applicable models of solar atmospheric waveguides in the framework of Cartesian geometry. We focus on exploiting the diagnostic potential of waveguide asymmetry and consider the effects of steady flow. In particular, the dispersion relation describing linear MHD wave propagation along a multi-layered MHD waveguide is derived. Aiming at lower solar atmospheric applications of SMS, the special case of a single magnetic slab embedded in an asymmetric magnetised plasma environment is revisited. As a proof of concept, the Amplitude Ratio Method is used to make a seismological estimate of the local Alfvén speed in several chromospheric fibrils that exhibit asymmetric oscillations. Absolute ratios of boundary oscillations between 1.29 and 3.42 are detected and, despite the significant errors expected, the local Alfvén speed estimates agree with previously derived estimates from magnetic field extrapolations. Finally, the effects of asymmetric shear flows present in these slab MHD waveguides are considered as a suitable model of Kelvin-Helmholtz instability initiation that is applicable, for example, to coronal mass ejection flanks.

MHD simulations of the in situ generation of kink and sausage waves in the solar corona by collision of dense plasma clumps

Context. Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves are ubiquitous in the solar corona where the highly structured magnetic fields provide efficient wave guides for their propagation. While MHD waves have been observed originating from lower layers of the solar atmosphere, recent studies have shown that some can be generated in situ by the collision of dense counter-propagating flows. Aims. In this theoretical study, we analyse the mechanism that triggers the propagation of kink and sausage modes in the solar corona following the collision of counter-propagating flows, and how the properties of the flows affect the properties of the generated waves. Methods. To study in detail this mechanism we ran a series of ideal 2D and 3D MHD simulations where we varied the properties of the counter-propagating flows; by means of a simple technique to estimate the amplitudes of the kink and sausage modes, we investigated their role in the generation and propagation of the MHD waves. Results. We find that the amplitude of the waves is largely dependent on the kinetic energy of the flows, and that the onset of kink or sausage modes depends on the asymmetries between the colliding blobs. Moreover, the initial wavelength of the MHD waves is associated with the magnetic configuration resulting from the collision of the flows. We also find that genuine 3D systems respond with smaller wave amplitudes. Conclusions. In this study, we present a parameter space description of the mechanism that leads to the generation of MHD waves from the collision of flows in the corona. Future observations of these waves can be used to understand the properties of the plasma and magnetic field of the solar corona.

Oscillation of a Small Hα Surge in a Solar Polar Coronal Hole

Abstract Hα surges (i.e., cool/dense collimated plasma ejections) may act as a guide for a propagation of magnetohydrodynamic waves. We report a high-resolution observation of a surge observed with 1.6 m Goode Solar Telescope (GST) on 2009 August 26, from 18:20 UT to 18:45 UT. Characteristics of plasma motions in the surge are determined with the normalizing radial gradient filter and the Fourier motion filter. The shape of the surge is found to change from a “C” shape to an inverse “C” shape after a formation of a cusp, a signature of reconnection. There are apparent upflows seen above the cusp top and downflows below it. The upflows show rising and rotational motions in the right-hand direction, with the rotational speed decreasing with height. Near the cusp top, we find a transverse oscillation of the surge, with the period of ∼2 minutes. There is no change of the oscillation phase below the cusp top, but above the top a phase change is identified, giving a vertical phase speed about 86 km s−1. As the height increases, the initial amplitude of the oscillation increases, and the oscillation damping time decreases from 5.13 to 1.18 minutes. We conclude that the oscillation is a propagating kink wave that is possibly excited by the repetitive spontaneous magnetic reconnection.
