Exploration of the reactivities of homemade binary pyrotechnics

Understanding the properties of explosives is the basis for investigating and analyzing explosion cases. To date, due to the strict legal control of standard explosives and initiators, homemade pyrotechnics composed of oxidizers and fuels have become popular explosive sources of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) threatening greatly social stability and personal safety. The reactivity of pyrotechnics strongly depends on their intrinsic characteristics and operating conditions, which determine the efficiencies of heat and mass transfer between the reaction zone and the unreacted zone. Herein, the tests of thermodynamics, pressurization characteristics, and combustion propagation behaviors are conducted to explore the effects of oxidizer species, particle size, and loading density on the reactivity of homemade binary aluminum-based pyrotechnics. The results show that the pyrotechnics with potassium chlorate (KClO3) have the strongest reactivity with the highest pressurization rate (dp/dt) and the shortest combustion duration. Compared with their counterparts based on aluminum microparticles(mAl), pyrotechnics consisting of Al nanoparticles (nAl) possess superior reactivity as expected, which results from the relatively short heat and mass transfer distances. The nAl-based pyrotechnics have a low reaction exothermic peak temperature, great heat release, great aluminothermic reaction completeness, and high produced peak pressure with several orders of magnitude higher pressurization rate. Increasing the loading density of the pyrotechnics over a certain value can change the dominant mode of heat transfer from convective to conduction, sharply decreasing the pressurization characteristics and combustion front propagation velocities (vp). The results of theoretical calculations using the NASA-CEA codes show that loading density can alter the reaction process of the pyrotechnics, leading to a decrease in the predicted pressure per unit mass for Al/KNO3 or Al/AP, and an increase for Al/KClO3. For nAl/potassium nitrate (KNO3), the density is between 1.0 and 1.25 g cm−3, across which dp/dt decreases by one order of magnitude from 0.148 to 0.014 MPa ms−1. In addition, vp decreases by three orders of magnitude from 0.040 to 0.078 m s−1. Distinct pressurization behaviors of nAl/AP are observed at a density of 1.5 g cm−3, while the variation in nAl/KClO3 reactivity fluctuates. These results are beneficial for the damage assessment of scenes caused by an explosion and for inversely calculating charge parameters.

Experimental and numerical study of lean combustion of propane in divergent porous media burners

Porous inert media burners for industrial applications demand the utilization of flame front stabilization methods, among which the convective or cross-section variation technique stands out. In this work, combustion of lean premixed propane-air mixtures in cylindrical and divergent alumina packed-bed porous inert media burners was numerically and experimentally conducted. Three burners of 0°, 15° and 30° of divergence were used to study the variation of equivalence ratio and inlet velocity. A bidimensional transient mathematical model was developed and solved numerically, whose results show good agreement with experimental measurements. The maximum temperature along the central axis is location dependent, with upstream augmentation of up to 86 %, meaning an increase of ∼ 815 K in the case of the 30° burner. Combustion front propagation velocity of upstream regime flames show acceleration in both divergent burners due to heat transfer and increment of thermal power in relation to cross-sectional areas when reaching the inlet. In comparison to cylindrical burner, a concave shape of the combustion front and a stretch of the maximum temperature zone was obtained, due to the diffusive nature of the velocity field. Stabilized flames on both divergent burners were achieved in the equivalence ratio range from 0.4 to 0.6. Residence time of product gases is greatly prolonged with burner wall angle and the decrease in overall temperature towards the outlet.

Laser tracking system for real-time monitoring the combustion of energetic nanomaterials

This paper discusses a technique for monitoring the combustion of high-energy materials in real time using a laser monitor modified to track the combustion front at the relatively long distance between the object of study and optical system. Options for moving the platform with the sample at a fixed beam of a laser monitor and a system with a motorized rotary mirror are considered. The system provides moving the observation area over the surface of the sample at an adjustable speed up to 22 cm/s. The advantages of the proposed technique are the possibility of high-speed control the combustion front propagation through the sample, full suppression of background lighting and the distance increasing when monitoring high-temperature objects. The paper presents the results of imaging the combustion in air of nanothermite compositions in a real time with movable field of view. The video images allow observing the changes in morphology of the nanopowder surface during combustion. In contrast to previously used laser monitors, the system allows studying the uniformity and linearity of combustion front propagation including the local burning rate at different moments of time.

Propagation of Combustion Front within Fractured Shale and Its Influence on Shale Structure and Crude Oil Properties: An Experimental Study

Summary The in-situ combustion (ISC) technique has emerged as a significant approach for shale oil production. However, currently, there is a lack of experimental evidence supporting the stable propagation of combustion front within fractured shale. This study aimed to investigate the combustion characteristics within fractured shale by using a self-designed combustion tube (CT) and an experimental scheme. Subsequently, an analysis of shale structure and oil properties was conducted. The results demonstrated that while the combustion front could propagate through shale with a single fracture width of approximately 43 μm, the combustion intensity gradually diminished, leading to an inability to sustain stable propagation in the later part of the oil-detritus mixtures. The combustion intensity within the shale was enhanced by preheating the shale at 250°C, resulting in an improved oil recovery from 67.8% to 77.9%. The findings indicated that the complex fractured shale allowed for the stable propagation of the combustion front without a significant decrease in combustion intensity. Moreover, the T2 spectrum analysis of shale revealed a gradual expansion of the pore-fracture structure and improved shale connectivity after combustion. The T1-T2 response illustrated the transformation of solid and heavy components into lighter components. Furthermore, the content of saturates and H in the oil increased after combustion, whereas there was a significant decrease in resins, O, and S. Overall, this study provided technical evidence supporting the feasibility of employing the ISC technique for the development of shale oil reservoirs with additional fractures.

Investigation into the key factors influencing the establishment and propagation of combustion front in ultra-deep high-temperature heavy oil reservoirs

The in-situ combustion technique is currently on the exploratory stage for ultra-deep high-temperature heavy oil reservoirs. In this work, the oxidation experiments of heavy oil were conducted using thermogravimetry, high-pressure differential scanning calorimetry, and combustion tube. Based on these experimental results, a reaction kinetics model was developed, which was then integrated into the Computer Modeling Group (CMG) STARS reservoir simulation software by adjusting stoichiometric numbers, kinetic parameters, and reaction enthalpy to match the experimental data obtained. Furthermore, a corrected reservoir simulation approach was employed, combining the variance analysis and a Pareto chart, to identify the key factors influencing the establishment and propagation of combustion front in the absence of electrical ignition. The results indicate that a reservoir temperature of 148 °C leads to the establishment of combustion front approximately 7 m away from the injection well, with a delay time of around 25.21 days. The Pareto chart reveals that reservoir temperature and water saturation are the primary controlling factors for combustion occurrence. Specifically, a reservoir temperature above 148 °C and water saturation below 60% increase the likelihood of combustion front formation. Among the examined factors, the reservoir temperature has the most significant effect on combustion front propagation. Once the reservoir temperature reaches 208 °C, a stable combustion front is formed, and the average temperature of combustion front remains around 400 °C throughout 8 years of model operation. When the water saturation was 50%, a consistently stable combustion front can be established within the first 6 years of model operation. However, beyond the 6th year, the average front temperature decreases below 400 °C. Therefore, it is recommended to introduce a certain amount of oxidation catalysts into the oil reservoirs after 6 years of air injection to enhance the combustion reactions. Increasing the air injection rate or pre-exponential factor does not have a significant effect on the average front temperature after 8 years of model operation, which remains below 350 °C. This study can provide significant references for future assessments and decision-making processes related to the application of ISC in ultra-deep high-temperature heavy oil reservoirs.

In-situ combustion technique for developing fractured low permeable oil shale: Experimental evidence for synthetic oil generation and successful propagation of combustion front

The idea of in-situ combustion (ISC) for oil shale development and conversion has been proposed recently. Due to the low permeability of oil shale, it usually requires fracturing operation before air injection. However, one of the biggest technical questions is, whether the combustion front can be established and steadily propagate in the low permeable oil shale with fractures. To date, no experimental work has been reported to support this. The target of this work is to provide experimental evidence to answer this question. We have managed to create a novel method for packing and fracturing oil shale core samples in a combustion tube for simulating ISC processes. A systematic analysis for the physical–chemical modeling of ISC process in combustion tube was performed, including temperature profile, pressure drop buildup, composition of produced gases, X-ray computed tomography (CT) and visual inspection, as well as total organic content analysis of oil shale samples before and after combustion, calculation of combustion parameters (air requirement, air/fuel ratio, apparent atomic H/C ratio, oxygen utilization, and O2/fuel ratio), and synthetic oil production. All results indicated the successful establishment and propagation of the combustion front in the fractured, low-permeability oil shale sample. In addition, the permeability of oil shale was increased 2–3 times during combustion, which can be an important factor that supports the stable propagation of the combustion front. Furthermore, the effect of water and catalysts on ISC performance was investigated. It was found that water promotes the cracking reactions of heavy oils to produce CO2 and hydrocarbon gases, and the co-existence of catalysts and water together further improved the performance of the ISC process and synthetic oil production. The findings in this work provide the experimental evidence of the successful establishment and propagation of combustion front in fractured, low-permeability oil shale, and technically proves the feasibility of using ISC technology for in-situ retorting of oil shale to generate synthetic oil for the development and conversion of low permeable oil shale with additional fracturing.

Experimental Study of Effect of Injection Timing on Port Fuel Injection Gasoline, Port Fuel Injection Compressed Natural Gas, and Direct Injection Compressed Natural Gas Engine Performance, Combustion, and Emissions Characteristics

Abstract Compressed natural gas (CNG) has gained popularity due to its wide availability, higher efficiency, and lower emissions compared to gasoline. However, the lower flame speed characteristics of CNG with conventional port injection reduce the CNG engine volumetric efficiency and power output. CNG's lower gas jet momentum during a low load operation creates a non-uniform air-fuel mixture that affects ignition and combustion quality. Direct injection of CNG with optimum injection timing is expected to improve volumetric efficiency, ignition quality, and combustion process. In this study, a comparative study on the effect of end-of-injection (EOI) timing on volumetric efficiency, thermal efficiency, combustion duration, and emissions was carried out in a single-cylinder port fuel injection (PFI) spark-ignition engine using gasoline and CNG, and direct injection (DI) spark ignition engine using CNG. The experiments were performed at two-part load operations of 20% and 40% throttle at 900 and 1500 rpm. Experimental results indicate that the PFI CNG engine is more influential in EOI timing than gasoline engines. The performance of the PFI CNG engine is improved when the injection occurs during the intake valve open period compared to the closed valve period with higher thermal efficiency, volumetric efficiency, and indicated mean effective power (IMEP). A shorter flame development angle and combustion duration were observed when EOI timing was in the open intake valve condition. DI CNG improved volumetric efficiency at advanced EOI timing compared to the PFI CNG engine. However, the combustion process is critically dependent on injection timing and air-fuel mixing duration. A three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics simulation was conducted to evaluate the effect of advanced and retarded EOI timing on DI CNG engine's in-cylinder turbulent kinetic energy development and in-cylinder equivalence ratio near the ignition point. An excess advanced EOI timing resulted in stratified rich and retarded EOI timing results in loss of turbulence energy, leading to a slightly rich and lean mixture for advanced and retarded EOI timing, respectively. Hence, an optimum EOI timing provides a conducive environment to initiate the combustion and flame front propagation. Further, advanced EOI timing was required at higher throttle opening and engine speed. The emissions in DI CNG were also greatly affected by EOI timing.

The Influence of Reservoir Clay Composition on Heavy Oil In Situ Combustion

Thermally enhanced oil recovery methods, such as in situ combustion and steam injection, are generating considerable interest in terms of improving oil reserve exploitation and satisfying oil demand and economic growth. However, the early breakthrough of the in situ combustion front and the significant amount of heat loss associated with steam injection for deeper reservoir applications are the main challenges that require urgent solutions. Further data collection related to the effects of a reservoir’s physical and chemical properties, temperature, and pressure on in situ combustion front propagation and steam injection heat transfer inefficiency would be needed to achieve better reservoir oil recovery. Most studies have focused on the application of catalytic systems and the investigation of minerals’ effects on combustion front stabilization; however, the effect of clay interlayers’ minerals on the performance of in situ combustion is still poorly understood. This paper takes a new look at the role played by the interlayers’ minerals in stabilizing the combustion front using X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetry (TG), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) combined with nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and combustion tube experiments. The studied samples’ compositions were analyzed by XRD, TG/DSC, and NMR techniques. Meanwhile, the effects of interlayers’ minerals on oil production were screened by combustion tube experiments. The data obtained from this study suggest that clay dispersion within a reservoir would improve oil recovery via in situ combustion, and our study led us to obtain an 80.5% recovery factor. However, the experiments of models with clay interlayers showed less recovery factors, and the model with interlayers led to a 0% recovery factor in the presence of air injection. Meanwhile, the same model in hydrothermal and air injection conditions led to a 13.9% recovery factor. This was due to the hydrothermal effect improving permeability and pore enlargement, which allowed the transfer of heat and matter. Moreover, our study found that clay minerals exhibit excellent catalytic effects on the formation of fuel deposition and the coke oxidation process. This effect was reflected in the significant role played by clay minerals in decreasing the number of heteroatoms by breaking down the C-S, C-N, and C-O bonds and by stimulating the processes of hydrocarbon polymerization during the in situ combustion. Our results add to a growing body of literature related to in situ combustion challenges and underline the importance of a reservoir’s physical parameters in the successful application of in situ combustion.

Propagation of Non-Adiabatic Heterogeneous Solid Combustion Waves with Effect to Internal Microstructure and Heat Release

ABSTRACT Propagation of combustion front with effect to the external heat loss is studied by the two-dimensional discrete periodic and disorder systems. Discrete periodic systems are modeled by the regular arrangement of burnt and unburnt point heat sources characterized by the identical rate of heat release and different heat loss parameter. Discrete disorder systems, namely, S1, S2 and S3 are considered with the concatenation of regular burnt and unburnt point heat sources distributed by different shaping parameter of beta distribution function. The unburnt point heat sources in a discrete disorder system are characterized by the different heat loss parameter and incorporation of two categories of distributions for the rate of heat release namely (i) gamma (a = 20) and (ii) gamma (a = 2). The oscillations in ignition time delay, with the manifestation of bifurcation pattern, have been detected for discrete periodic systems. In a discrete disorder system, the external heat loss plays a crucial role in developing the fingering instabilities and determining the early onset of unstable combustion, quenching and combustion limit. Degree of randomness in the distribution of heat release for the disorder system affects the duration of combustion, burn rate without affecting the combustion limit. Computed values of burn rate and combustion limit from the discrete combustion model have been compared with the available data from experiment.

Progress Toward Pilot-Scale Simulation of In-Situ Combustion Incorporating Geomechanics

Summary In-situ combustion (ISC) is a promising thermal enhanced oil recovery method with benefits for deep reservoirs, potentially lesser energy requirements as compared to steam injection, and low opportunity cost. Although successful ISC projects have been developed all over the world, challenges still exist including difficulties in monitoring combustion-front progress in the field, describing multiscale physical processes, characterizing crude oil kinetics fully, and simulating ISC at field scale. This work predicts combustion front propagation and the effect of thermally induced stress at the scale of an ISC pilot project. Reservoir deformation was characterized by a geomechanical model to investigate the correlation of combustion front progress with reservoir and surface deformation. We upscaled the reaction kinetics directly from combustion tube experiments and calibrated the laboratory-scale model compared with experimental measurements. We then upscaled numerical simulation to a 3D geometry incorporating a geomechanical model. The change in scale is significant as the combustion tube is 6.56 ft (2 m) in length, whereas the dimensions of the 3D model are 1,440 ft by 1,440 ft (439 m) by 1,400 ft (427 m). The elastic properties were defined by Young’s modulus and Poisson’s ratio, whereas the plastic properties were defined by a Mohr-Coulomb model. A sensitivity study examined the reliability of the model, showing the reaction progress and geomechanical responses were not significantly impacted by gridblock dimensions and reservoir heterogeneity. Finally, a field-scale model was developed covering an area of 5,960 ft (1817 m) by 4,200 ft (1280 m). We observed successful ISC simulation including ignition as air injection started. The temperature increased immediately to more than 800°C (1,400°F) based on the chemical kinetics implemented. The temperature history indicated that the combustion front propagated from the injection well into the reservoir with an average velocity of 0.16 ft/D (0.049 m/d). A surface deformation map correlated with the progress of ISC in the subsurface. Land surface uplift because of ISC ranges from 0.1 ft (0.03 m) to several feet, depending on the rock properties and subsurface events. This proof-of-concept model indicated strong potential to detect the surface movement using interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) and/or tiltmeters to monitor dynamically combustion front positions in subsurface.

Solid Energetic Material Based on Aluminum Micropowder Modified by Microwave Radiation

The paper discusses the application of pulsed microwave radiation for the modification of crystalline components of a high-energy material (HEsM). The model aluminized mixture with increased heat of combustion was studied. The mixture contained 15 wt.% aluminum micron powder, which was modified by microwave irradiation. It was found that the HEM thermogram has an exo-effect with the maximum at 364.3 °C. The use of a modified powder in the HEM composition increased the energy release during combustion by 11% from 5.6 kJ/g to 6.2 kJ/g. The reason for this effect is the increase in the reactivity of aluminum powder after microwave irradiation. In this research, we confirmed that the powders do not lose the stored energy, even as part of the HEM produced on their basis. A laser projection imaging system with brightness amplification was used to estimate the speed of combustion front propagation over the material surface. Measurement of the burning rate revealed a slight difference in the burning rates of HEMs based on irradiated and non-irradiated aluminum micropowders. This property can be demanded in practice, allowing a greater release of energy while maintaining the volume of energetic material.

Influence of high-temperature annealing on structure of titanium aluminide materials obtained by combustion and high-temperature shear deformation

A compact material based on initial powders of titanium and aluminum (porosity <1%) was obtained by unrestricted SHS-compression. This method combines combustion processes in the mode of self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (combustion temperature – 1460 °C, combustion front propagation – 3.7 mm/s) and high-temperature shear deformation. The obtained material structure and phase composition were studied. The high-temperature shear deformation was shown to lead to textured structure of the material which consisted of alternating intermetallic phases in the following sequence: α2-Ti3Al, γ-TiAl, TiAl2 и TiAl3. Influence of high-temperature annealing at T = 1000 °C during 0.5–4 h on the material structure and phase composition was studied.

Understanding the mobilised oil drainage dynamics inside laboratory-scale and field-scale reservoirs for more accurate THAI process design and operation procedures

The technical and economic validities of the toe-to-heel air injection (THAI) process for heavy oils upgrading and production are yet to be fully realised even though it has been operated at laboratory, pilot, and semi-commercial levels. The findings from Canadian Kerrobert THAI project suggested that there is no proportionality between oil production and air injection rates. However, this conclusion was reached without having to dig deeper into the dynamics of the transport processes inside the reservoir especially that efficient combustion was clearly taking place as the mol% oxygen in the produced gas was negligible. As a result, this study is conducted with aims of identifying the similarities and differences of the dynamics of the transport processes in lab-scale and field-scale reservoirs. For the first time, this study has found oil drainage dynamics inside the reservoir to be both scale-dependent and operation-dependent. For the laboratory-scale numerical model E, what is clearest is that all of the head of the oil flux vectors are either totally vertically directed or slightly inclined and pointing upward towards the heel. None of them is pointing backward towards the toe of the HP well. Thus, it is apparent that oil drainage pattern in this laboratory-scale model E is efficient as all the mobilised upgraded oil, including from the base of the combustion cell, is produced as the combustion front advances in the toe-to-heel manner. However, the combustion front has a backward-leaning shape which is an indicator that it is propagating even inside the HP well. This implies that the process is operating in an unstable, inefficient, and unsafe mode. These two opposing patterns at laboratory-scale must be resolved to ensure healthy combustion front propagation with efficient oil drainage and production rates are achieved. At the field scale (i.e. model F), this study has shown for the first time that there are actually two mobile oil zones: the one ahead of the combustion front with lower oil flux magnitude (i.e. MOZ) and the one containing large pool of mobilised partially upgraded oil at the base of the reservoir just behind the toe of the HP well. The above findings in model F show that there is conflicting dynamics about the goal of achieving large oil production rates downstream of the combustion front with the propagation of forward-tilting stable, safe, and efficient combustion front. If the combustion is to be optimally sustained, then most of the mobilised upgraded oil might be lost going in the wrong direction towards the region behind the toe of the HP well. In actual reservoir in the field, shale with very low permeability and porosity must be present behind the toe in order for the large pool of mobilised upgraded oil that is continuously draining from the vertical adjacent planes to be forced into the toe of the HP well. As a result, to balance these two conflicting dynamics of upward-tilted combustion front going longitudinally towards the heel of the HP well and the mobilised oil draining down at an angle towards the region behind the toe of the HP well, future studies are essentially required. These are proposed and also listed under the conclusion section in order to ensure thorough design and operation procedures for the THAI process are established.

Activation of Anthracite Combustion Using Pyrolysis Oil from Thermal Conversion of Waste Car Tires.

The ignition and combustion of anthracite modified by the addition of pyrolysis oil obtained during thermal processing of waste car tires (WCTs) had been studied. The mass fraction of WCT pyrolysis oil was varied in the range from 5 to 30 wt %. The additive was applied by the drop impregnation method. Ignition and combustion of obtained samples were carried out in a combustion chamber at temperatures of the heating medium Tg = 600–800 °C. The gas-phase combustion products were analyzed using an in-line gas analyzer. The application of WCT pyrolysis oil as a combustion modifier contributed to an increase in the reactivity of anthracite, which was expressed in a decrease in the minimum ignition temperature (by 23–104 °C) and a reduction in the ignition delay time. The high-speed video recording indicated that the combustion of both initial and modified with 5 wt % pyrolysis oil anthracite samples was realized in oxidation mode. For samples with more than 10 wt % pyrolysis oil additive, the formation of a visible flame was observed near the sample surface. With an increase in the mass fraction of the additive, the rate of combustion front propagation was increased. The application of WCT pyrolysis oil as a combustion modifier also contributed to the reduction or even the almost complete elimination of unburnt carbon content in the ash residue formed after anthracite combustion.

Effect of Thermal Exposure on Oil Shale Saturation and Reservoir Properties

The experimental and numerical modeling of thermal enhanced oil recovery (EOR) requires a detailed laboratory analysis of core properties influenced by thermal exposure. To acquire the robust knowledge on the change in rock saturation and reservoir properties, the fastest way is to examine the rock samples before and after combustion. In the current paper, we studied the shale rock properties, such as core saturation, porosity, and permeability, organic matter content of the rock caused by the combustion front propagation within the experimental modeling of the high-pressure air injection. The study was conducted on Bazhenov shale formation rock samples. We reported the results on porosity and permeability evolution, which was obtained by the gas pressure-decay technique. The measurements revealed a significant increase of porosity (on average, for 9 abs. % of porosity) and permeability (on average, for 1 mD) of core samples after the combustion tube experiment. The scanning electron microscopy showed the changes induced by thermal exposure: the transformation of organic matter with and the formation of new voids and micro and nanofractures in the mineral matrix. Low-field Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) was chosen as a primary non-disruptive tool for measuring the saturation of core samples in ambient conditions. NMR T1–T2 maps were interpreted to determine the rock fluid categories (bitumen and adsorbed oil, structural and adsorbed water, and mobile oil) before and after the combustion experiment. Changes in the distribution of organic matter within the core sample were examined using 2D Rock-Eval pyrolysis technique. Results demonstrated the relatively uniform distribution of OM inside the core plugs after the combustion.

Combustion in Ni–Al system with Cu additive (powder or rod) Experiment and mathematical model

Experimental studies were carried out with theoretical calculations of wave synthesis in the Ni–Al–Cu system were performed using the mathematical model developed. Approximate analytical formulas were obtained for synthesis performance evaluation. The inverse problem method was used to get kinetic constants that determine process dynamics based on the experimental data and analytical relationships. It is shown that the combustion front propagation velocity increases monotonically with an increase in the reaction sample relative density in the range of relative density values of 0.4 to 0.6. The depth of copper melt penetration from the center of the sample into the nickel-aluminum matrix depends on the relative density of the sample and copper wire diameter: higher densities and larger diameters lead to an increase in the liquid-phase impregnation area. The rate of nickel and aluminum powder frame wetting with copper melt is limited by the synthesis wave speed. Based on the experimental data and analytical ratios, we estimated the effective kinetic constants describing the high-temperature synthesis of the Ni + Al reaction mixture in the presence of copper additives. The thermal effect of the NiAl intermetallic formation reaction and the preexponential factor in the chemical transformation equation are calculated, the exponent value in the ratio for the mixture thermal conductivity is established; a constant determining the process of nickel-aluminum matrix impregnation with copper melt is found. The macroscopic approach used to analyze the NiAl intermetallic synthesis makes it possible to determine all the desired physicochemical characteristics and model parameters. The mathematical model is suitable for predictive estimates and experimental data analysis in the macroscopic approximation. Approximate analytical formulas are obtained for calculating the NiAl intermetallic synthesis characteristics. They allow for calculating the through channel characteristics and can be used in the design of NiAl products.

Numerical simulation of a mixed-mode reaction front in a PPC engine

The ignition process, mode of combustion and reaction front propagation in a partially premixed combustion (PPC) engine running with a primary reference fuel (87% iso-octane, 13% n-heptane by volume) is studied numerically in a large eddy simulation. Different combustion modes, ignition front propagation, premixed flame and non-premixed flame, are observed simultaneously. Displacement speed of CO iso-surface propagation describes the transition of premixed auto-ignition to non-premixed flame. High temporal resolution optical data of CH2O and chemiluminescence are compared with simulated results. A high speed ignition front is seen to expand through fuel-rich mixture and stabilize around stoichiometry in a non-premixed flame while lean premixed combustion occurs in the spray wake at a much slower pace. A good qualitative agreement of the distribution of chemiluminescence and CH2O formation and destruction shows that the simulation approach sufficiently captures the driving physics of mixed-mode combustion in PPC engines. The study shows that the transition from auto-ignition to flame occurs over a period of several crank angles and the reaction front propagation can be captured using the described model.

Termite pyrotechnic compositions of iron and alkaline earth metals peroxides

The fallowing article presents the combustion studies of Fe/alkaline earth metals peroxides composition. It contains a literature review and the results of own research, which aim is to determine the possibility of using iron-based thermite compositions in time delay elements. The article focuses on the investigation of combustion front propagation rate as a function of a pressing load, the iron content and the purity of used oxidants. The DSC, TG and XRD analysis confirmed that reactions in this system occurs mainly in the solid state.

Experimental Investigations of Forward and Reverse Combustion for Increasing Oil Recovery of a Real Oil Field

The work presented herein is devoted to a unique set of forward and reverse combustion tube (CT) experiments to access the suitability and potential of the in situ combustion (ISC) method for the light oil carbonate reservoir. One forward and one reverse combustion tube tests were carried out using the high-pressure combustion tube (HPCT) experimental setup. However, during reverse combustion, the front moved in the opposite direction to the airflow. The results obtained from experiments such as fuel/air requirements, H/C ratio, and recovery efficiency are crucial for further validation of the numerical model. A quantitative assessment of the potential for the combustion was carried out. The oil recovery of forward combustion was as high as 91.4% of the initial oil in place, while that for the reverse combustion test demonstrated a 43% recovery. In the given conditions, forward combustion demonstrated significantly higher efficiency. However, the stabilized combustion front propagation and produced gases of reverse combustion prove its possible applicability. Currently, there is a limited amount of available studies on reverse combustion and a lack of publications within the last decades despite advances in technologies. However, reverse combustion might have advantages over forward combustion for heavy oil reservoirs with lower permeability or might serve as a reservoir preheating technique. These experiments give the opportunity to build and validate the numerical models of forward and reverse combustion conducted at reservoir conditions and test their field application using different scenarios.
