Sustainability Education in Pakistan: A Qualitative Content Analysis of The 10th Grade Pakistan Studies Textbook

Using the Sustainability Framework proposed by Tavanti (2010), depiction of sustainability in 10th grade Pakistan Studies textbook. This textbook was selected through purposive sampling. For data analysis, Qualitative Content Analysis was used facilitated by NVivo 12 software. The findings of the study revealed that sustainability in the 10th grade Pakistan studies textbook was limited and lacked integration and concentration among several dimensions of sustainability as per Tavanti’s framework of sustainability. Partial coverage has been given to social, economic, cultural, and values dimensions of sustainability. Also, it lacks depth and does not discuss them critically. On the other hand, the environmental and institutional dimensions are almost non-existent. The textbook mostly emphasizes the economic use of natural resources and relatively ignores the role of environmental conservation and responsible use of natural resources. Moreover, the textbook failed to cover the role of indigenous knowledge, cultural diversity, and values in the promotion of sustainable development. Rural homestead reform in China: unveiling urbanization dynamics and lessons for sustainable development

The unique experience of land reform in China holds significant implications for other nations in urgent need of liberating and developing their productivity, providing valuable insights and lessons. This study conducted a micro-level analysis of land reform in China, the United States, and India, focusing on the implications for other nations. Surveys were conducted on 459 households in 12 townships in Zhejiang and Sichuan provinces, China. A random sampling approach was employed, selecting 5 sample counties (cities, districts) across Jinhua, Shaoxing, and Chengdu. Within each county (city, district), 2–3 townships were randomly selected, and 2–3 villages were chosen from each township. Subsequently, 10–20 households were randomly surveyed in each village. Statistical analysis using descriptive statistics and the Logistic model revealed robust results with p values below 0.05 for key variables. China’s new urbanization strategy highlights the necessity of reforming the rural homestead system, particularly as higher urbanization rates prompt farmers to withdraw from and transfer their homesteads worldwide. Tailored homestead policies that consider regional disparities in urbanization levels are crucial. A micro-level survey underscores the impact of urbanization, household head identity, and age on farmers’ decisions regarding homestead exit and transfer. Addressing external pressures, efforts should prioritize the revitalization of rural areas and the promotion of sustainable development. This includes enhancing small and medium-sized cities, fostering on-site urbanization, and creating nearby employment opportunities for farmers. However, the effectiveness of these measures varies across regions and is influenced by local levels of marketization. Internally, there is a need to bolster skill training and vocational education for farmers. In summary, the policy recommendations stemming from the micro-level survey in this study offer valuable insights for land reform strategies and sustainable development initiatives, spanning from individual farmers to national policies. They also contribute to a deeper understanding for policymakers, providing a novel analytical perspective.

Manager myopia and green technology innovation

PurposeWith the growing concern of various sectors of society regarding environmental issues and the promotion of sustainable development, green technology innovation is generally considered to be conducive to the long-term development of enterprises. However, because of the existence of agency problems, managers may have shortsighted behaviors. Then how will managers' shortsighted behaviors affect enterprises' green technology innovation?Design/methodology/approachThis paper uses machine learning-based text analysis methods to construct a manager myopia index based on the data from A-share listed companies on the Shanghai and Shenzhen Stock Exchanges from 2015 to 2020. We examine the impact of manager myopia on green technology innovation in companies.FindingsOur study finds that manager myopia significantly inhibits green technology innovation in companies. However, when multiple large shareholders coexist and the proportion of institutional investors' holdings is high, it can alleviate the inhibitory effect of manager myopia on green innovation. Heterogeneity tests show that the impact of manager myopia on green technology innovation is relatively significant in non-state-owned and manufacturing companies, as well as in the electricity industry. Robustness tests demonstrate that our conclusions remain valid after using propensity score matching to eliminate endogeneity problems.Originality/valueFrom the perspective of corporate governance, this paper incorporates managers' shortsightedness, multiple large shareholders and institutional investors' shareholding ratios into the same logical framework, analyzes their internal mechanisms, helps improve corporate governance, enhances green innovation capabilities and has strong implications for the implementation of national innovation-driven development strategies and the achievement of “carbon peak” and “carbon neutrality” targets.

Does integrated transport topology act as a stimulus for inclusive growth and regional development in Bosnia and Herzegovina?

The transport system is a crucial component of economic development in any country. Bosnia and Herzegovina, being a country with a diverse topography, faces unique challenges and opportunities in its transport system. This paper examines the potential challenges and opportunities of the transport system in Bosnia and Herzegovina and its role in economic development. Using a qualitative research approach, we conduct an in‐depth analysis of existing literature and collect primary data through semi‐structured interviews with key stakeholders in the transport industry in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Our findings indicate that the transport system in Bosnia and Herzegovina faces significant challenges, including inadequate infrastructure, lack of modernization, limited investment, and weak institutional framework. However, there are opportunities for the development of the transport system including its strategic location as a transit hub, potential for infrastructure improvements, and its unique natural resources that can be leveraged for tourism and sustainable development. The development of the transport system can also lead to increased trade and investment, job creation, and improved social welfare. To fully realize the potential of the transport system in Bosnia and Herzegovina, policymakers and stakeholders need to work together to address the challenges and leverage the opportunities. This paper provides policy recommendations for improving the transport system, including investment in infrastructure, modernization of the transport sector, institutional strengthening, and the promotion of sustainable development. The findings of this study have significant implications for the economic development of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and countries with similar challenges and opportunities in the transport sector.

With the continuous prosperity of maritime transportation on a global scale and the resulting escalation in port trade volume, tugboats assume a pivotal role as essential auxiliary tools influencing the ingress and egress of vessels into and out of ports. As a result, the optimization of port tug scheduling becomes of paramount importance, as it contributes to the heightened efficiency of ship movements, cost savings in port operations, and the promotion of sustainable development within the realm of maritime transportation. However, a majority of current tugboat scheduling models tend to focus solely on the maximum operational time. Alternatively, the formulated objective functions often deviate from real-world scenarios. Furthermore, prevailing scheduling methods exhibit shortcomings, including inadequate solution accuracy and incompatibility with integer programming. Consequently, this paper introduces a novel multi-objective tugboat scheduling model to align more effectively with practical considerations. We propose a novel optimization algorithm, the Improved Grey Wolf Optimization (IGWO), for solving the tugboat scheduling model. The algorithm enhances convergence performance by optimizing convergence parameters and individual updates, making it particularly suited for solving integer programming problems. The experimental session designs several scale instances according to the reality of the port, carries out simulation experiments comparing several groups of intelligent algorithms, verifies the effectiveness of IGWO, and verifies it in the comprehensive port area of Huanghua Port to get the optimal scheduling scheme of this port area, and finally gives management suggestions to reduce the cost of tugboat operation through sensitivity analysis.

The impact of transparent packaging: how transparent packaging for organic foods affects tourists' green purchasing behavior.

Previous studies have shown that transparent packaging can influence consumer behavior, but the impact on tourists' environmentally friendly purchase intentions is not well-understood. This study conducted four experiments with 1,513 participants to explore the role of transparent packaging in tourists' willingness to engage in green purchasing. Factors such as ecological concern, nature connectedness, and environmental consequences were also examined. The results showed that transparent packaging significantly enhanced tourists' purchase intentions and that ecological concern, nature connectedness, and environmental consequences had a significant influence on these intentions. These findings contribute to understanding the packaging paradox and its relationship with tourists' green purchasing behavior. The study has implications for the food retail industry and the promotion of sustainable development in scenic areas, suggesting that transparent packaging can effectively enhance tourists' purchase intentions for green products. Understanding factors like ecological concern and nature connectedness can also provide valuable insights for the industry to improve marketing strategies and promote environmentally friendly choices among tourists.

Navigating the Nexus between Rural Revitalization and Sustainable Development: A Bibliometric Analyses of Current Status, Progress, and Prospects

Achieving sustainable rural development is challenging. However, revitalizing the rural economy is one of the most suitable strategies to overcome sustainable development problems. The rural revitalization strategy aims to create an idealized sustainable development model for rural areas which can avoid the current crisis and utilize institutional advantages to overcome the survival challenges of mostly small-scale peasant economies. The logic of the rural revitalization strategy lies in its essential value implication and practical orientation for consolidating the foundation in rural areas, including its characteristics and its ability to realize long-term sustainable development. There is growing interest in research on rural revitalization and sustainable development, but the current status, trends, and progress are unknown. This study examines the most recent advancements in research patterns for rural revitalization and the promotion of sustainable development from 1995 to 2023. It accomplishes this by thoroughly evaluating and analyzing published scholarly material. We performed a bibliometric analysis of the literature obtained from the Scopus database using VOS Viewer software version 1.6.15. We examined a total of 403 articles and evaluated them, focusing on the precise terms “Rural Revitalization” and “Sustainable Development”. We found that post-2018, there has been a notable surge in the popularity and acceptance of research related to these topics. China ranks first in terms of publishing the greatest number of research articles. The journal Sustainability has published the most articles on sustainable development and rural revitalization, followed by Land and the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health. The Journal of Rural Studies published the most cited document. Exciting research areas include the conservation of natural resources, ecosystem cities, and rural revitalization strategies. The research findings thoroughly evaluate academic output and propose thematic areas for further investigation.

Experimental Investigation on the Effect of Salt Solution on the Soil Freezing Characteristic Curve for Expansive Soils

With the development of the Belt and Road Initiative in China, high-speed railways are booming and inevitably pass through seasonal frost regions. In Nanyang basin, due to seasonal changes, railway subgrades will undergo frost heaving and thawing subsidence. The freezing characteristics of the soil are characterized by the freezing characteristic curve, and the important factors affecting the freezing characteristic curve are the content of expansive clay minerals in the soil and the salt solution. Therefore, three soil samples with different montmorillonite contents were saturated with salt solutions of different concentrations, and the freezing temperature of the soil samples was controlled by a cold bath. After the temperature equilibrium, the frozen stable soil samples were put into a nuclear magnetic resonance instrument to test the unfrozen water content, and the relationship between the freezing temperature and the unfrozen water content of expansive soil under different salt solution concentrations was obtained. Additionally, a unified model was used to simulate the test results. The results show that SFCC shifts to the left, that is, the sodium chloride salt solution reduces the freezing point of the soil sample so that it has more unfrozen water at the same temperature. At the same time, the soil’s freezing characteristic curves are closely related to content of expansive clay minerals in the soil. The more expansive clay mineral content, the greater the corresponding unfrozen water content. These results provide some basic insights for improving the frost heave and thaw subsidence problems of railway subgrades in seasonal permafrost regions, which will have a positive impact on promoting the management and rational application of land resources and the promotion of sustainable development.

Along with the rapid development of urbanization in China, a series of environmental problems have accompanied, especially industrial effluents containing heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, mercury, etc., which have caused great damage to water, soil and earth, and have caused great harm to human health. In this article, new processes such as adsorption, membrane separation, chemical precipitation, ion exchange, bio-adsorption, and bio-reduction are introduced. The technology has shown excellent results in a variety of working conditions, opening up new ways for the treatment of heavy metal pollution in water. The development of this topic is of great and urgent practical significance for the protection of ecological environment and the promotion of sustainable development in China.

Building a sustainable future: ideas and perceptions of university staff

PurposeThe universities of applied sciences (UASs) in Finland play a significant role in providing skilled professionals with higher education degrees to meet the needs of the labor market and society as a whole. The purpose of this study is to determine what the staff in these universities consider the role of UASs in promoting sustainable development (SD) to be.Design/methodology/approachThe qualitative research data were collected from a survey distributed among UAS staff in the spring of 2021. The data consisted of 831 responses to an open-ended question on how UASs could promote SD and a sense of responsibility for it. The method used for the data analysis was theory-led content analysis.FindingsStaff at UASs are actively promoting SD in higher education and have many ideas on how to do this, which is encouraging. With further processing of these ideas and support from management, UASs can play a more important role in sustainability work and set an example for how to build a sustainable future.Originality/valueThe promotion of SD is a timely topic, and examples of SD implementation and good practices can promote discussion of the role of higher education institutions in SD promotion and highlight collective ways to promote it.

Assessment of iron and heavy metals accumulation in the soils of the combat zone

The object of the study is soils in areas with active military operations. The study is dedicated to assessing the environmental impact of military operations through forecasting. The paper highlights the impact of military conflict on the distribution of heavy metals in soils. An analysis of the distribution and interaction of heavy metals in soil is carried out, which helps to understand the dynamics of pollution in the context of military conflict, and allows to understand the complex processes of the impact of military operations on the environment and the state of soil resources. The complex interrelationships between military operations and environmental pollution are revealed, with an emphasis on the importance of studying the distribution and immobilization of iron and heavy metals in the current conditions of the risk of military operations. It is shown that the most rapidly distributed metals in the soil are: iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd), antimony (Sb); the slowest: arsenic (As), lead (Pb), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), mercury (Hg), manganese (Mn), vanadium (V). It was found that loams and chernozems are more prone to the accumulation of heavy metals and iron than sandy soils. Compared to sandy soil, the rate of metal release in loam decreases from 16.7 % to 69.7 %. In comparison of chernozem to loam, the release rate slows down from 17.85 % to 32.08 %. It was found that the rate of spreading of barium, cobalt, arsenic, lead, mercury, manganese, strontium and titanium does not depend on the type and mechanical parameters of the soil. The practical use of the results will help to predict the mechanism of pollution spread and help to identify the highest risk areas. The results of the study indicate the need to develop scientifically sound strategies for environmental protection and promotion of sustainable development in the area affected by military events

Environmental Crimes and Criminal Legal Framework in Albania

Environmental protection is an essential issue in today’s society. With the increasing number of environmental problems and issues, it is essential to have a comprehensive understanding of the role of criminal law in environmental protection. This paper aims to explore the relationship between criminal law and environmental protection, determining the effectiveness of criminal law in addressing environmental threats. Also, through this study it is analyzed from a comparative point of view in relation to the legislation of the developed countries of the European Union, the shortcomings of the Albanian criminal legislation which need to be updated. Criminal law has also played an important role in protecting the environment by imposing penalties and punishments on individuals or corporations that violate environmental laws. However, there is a need to assess the effectiveness of criminal law in protecting the environment and the challenges it faces in achieving its objectives. This research aims to contribute to the existing literature on criminal law in environmental protection by providing a more complete understanding of its effectiveness and challenges. The findings of the study will assist policy makers in designing and implementing more effective environmental protection measures, resulting in the promotion of sustainable development.

Rural Resident Participation in Rural Human Settlement Environmental

This study aims to delve into the impact of rural resident participation on rural human settlement environmental governance, providing fresh theoretical insights and practical experiences for rural governance. Firstly, the paper analyzes the significance of rural resident participation in rural environmental governance, emphasizing the pivotal role of rural self-governance in community governance. Subsequently, the study examines the role of government policies and support, as well as the involvement of non-governmental organizations, in rural environmental governance. Government policies and support stimulate proactive participation by rural residents, while non-governmental organizations contribute specialized knowledge and resources to rural environmental projects. Collaboration between the government and non-governmental organizations is also identified as a key factor in enhancing governance efficiency. In the concluding section, the comprehensive effects of rural resident participation in rural human settlement environmental governance are summarized, including environmental quality improvement, increased community cohesion, and the promotion of sustainable development. Additionally, the study explores the potential and future directions of rural resident participation, underscoring the importance of policy formulation and further research. This research is expected to provide valuable insights for academia and policymakers, fostering the advancement and refinement of rural governance.

Spatiotemporal changes of coastal land use land cover and its drivers in Shanghai, China between 1989 and 2015

The coastal zone, an ecotone that provides vital diverse ecosystem services, is one of the most ecologically fragile and sensitive areas on the Earth. It has been strongly influenced by human activities and climate change. Thus, understanding the spatiotemporal changes of land use land cover in the coast is an essential prerequisite for the comprehensive evaluation of coastal ecosystems and the promotion of sustainable development. This study investigated the spatial and temporal changes of land use land cover in the coastal zone of mainland Shanghai by using high spatial resolution aerial images, and the associated driving factors obtained from statistical yearbooks between 1989 and 2015. Our results show that the total land area in the coastal zone exhibited an increasing trend at an annual rate of 7.6% on average. The coastal urban land use also experienced substantial increases, with the degree of urban expansion reaching 42.1% in 2015. The coastal urbanization was at the cost of natural and semi-natural lands. Nearly 64.4% of agricultural land, 24.4% of ocean area within the buffer, 84.9% of fresh water, and 92.8% of the tidal flat had been converted to urban land during 1989–2015. The gradient analysis of land use land cover change along the north-to-south coastal line revealed the spatiotemporal patterns of total land, urbanization degree, and natural and semi-natural lands. The majority of the socioeconomic factors influenced land use land cover change in the coastal zone, positively contributing to the increase of public facilities’ use of land, but negatively affecting the freshwater areas. These findings can provide insights for decision-making in the future for coastal land use land cover planning and management in Shanghai.

Can Digital Economy Drive Income Level Growth in the Context of Sustainable Development? Fresh Evidence from “Broadband China”

In the context of the rapid development of digital economy and the promotion of sustainable development, this paper focuses on the impact of digital economy on income levels. Based on the panel data of 195 prefecture-level cities, the “Broadband China” pilot has been regarded as a natural experiment for the measurement of the digital economy. In this paper, a time-varying DID model was established to evaluate the influential effect of “Broadband China” on income growth. It was found that the coming into service of “Broadband China” has increased the overall income level of the Chinese labor force. Further research found that “Broadband China” has done more to raise the income levels of the high-skilled labor force, thus widening the income gap between the high-, medium-, and low-skilled labor force. “Broadband China” can affect the income growth via two mechanisms, namely, “increasing the entrepreneurship rate” and “leading to an increase in the overall number of professional and skilled labor force in China”. In this case, the entrepreneurship rate of the high-skilled labor force may be higher than that of the medium- and low-skilled labor force due to human capital accumulation. The rapid increase in the high-skilled labor force in technical industries will lead to the situation where their income growth effect is higher than that of the medium- and low-skilled labor force. Based on the above research results, this paper puts forward policy suggestions from three aspects: further accelerating the process of digital economy; improving the institutional environment of the broadband network and standardizing the order of the construction of the broadband network; and further stimulating the entrepreneurial motivation of labor force, paying attention to the problem of skill bias and optimizing the employment structure, balancing efficiency and equity, and contributing to the ultimate sustainable development of developing countries.

Relating Sustainable Development Goals in a Conceptual Integrated Model of Growth and Welfare

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) is one of the most relevant efforts aiming at the promotion of sustainable development around the world. Many indicators serve as a guide to evaluate the actual level of development and to identify the issues that need more attention. What is not clear yet is the association between the goals and their indicators. This can limit the information on effective political tools to reduce inequalities at the national and local levels. Based on that, the paper aims to explore the connections between SDGs. Its approach involves i) the proposal of a conceptual integrated model of sustainable development rooted in the literature and connectable with the SDGs; ii) based on World Bank (2019) data on sustainable indicators over two decades, the test of a two-stage econometric model, one to explain product per capita and a second one to explain lack of happiness, assessed by the suicide rate. From the results, it is possible to identify the factors that influence the level of wealth and happiness while integrating Sustainable Development Goals.

Technology to support sustainable education in physical education

<p>Sustainable Development is an action programme of the European Agenda 2030 to protect people, planet and prosperity, this programme was signed by the governments of the member countries of the United Nations Organization in September 2015. All European countries recognize the importance of Education and Physical Education and how, as a consequence, schools can implement the goals of sustainable development using the various tools of increasingly digital and technological education. The paper proposes an examination of the literature and some of the technological tools known to date aimed at the didactic support of physical education aimed at the promotion of sustainable development. In addition, the work is enriched with an analysis of the current situation with an interview, administered through the Google Forms tool, addressed to Physical Education teachers working throughout Italy.</p>

A Percepção dos Brasileiros sobre os Objetivos de Desenvolvimento Sustentável (ODS) e a Economia de Baixo Carbono

Objective: The objective of this study is to analyze the significance of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the context of the Low Carbon Economy (LCE) through a quantitative and descriptive approach. The research aims to identify and understand the relationships between the 17 SDGs and their impact on the promotion of sustainable development, particularly in mitigating climate change-related issues. Method: The research employed a quantitative and descriptive methodology, utilizing a survey conducted in the state of Rio Grande do Sul (RS), Brazil. The survey was designed to gather data from respondents representing civil society, government, and companies in the region. Participants were asked to evaluate the importance and influence of each of the 17 SDGs on the Low Carbon Economy. Results: The research findings reveal substantial relationships between the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Low Carbon Economy (LCE), as perceived by the respondents. The results indicate that all SDGs play a significant role in influencing the LCE. These findings emphasize the interconnectedness of sustainable development goals and their potential to drive the transition to a Low Carbon Economy. Conclusions: The study highlights the crucial role of Sustainable Development Goals in promoting a Low Carbon Economy. By fostering the use of renewable energy sources and sustainable practices, the LCE offers a solution to reduce environmental damage and work towards achieving sustainable development.
