Measurement of the Central Galactic Black Hole by Extremely Large Mass-Ratio Inspirals

In the galaxy, extremely large mass-ratio inspirals (X-MRIs) composed of brown dwarfs and the massive black hole at the galactic center are expected to be promising gravitational wave sources for space-borne detectors. In this work, we simulate the gravitational wave signals from twenty X-MRI systems by an axisymmetric Konoplya–Rezzolla–Zhidenko metric with varied parameters. We find that the mass, spin, and deviation parameters of the Kerr black hole can be determined accurately (∼10−5−10−6) with only one X-MRI event with a high signal-to-noise ratio. The measurement of the above parameters could be improved with more X-MRI observations.

Stochastic gravitational-wave background searches and constraints on neutron-star ellipticity

ABSTRACTRotating neutron stars (NSs) are promising sources of gravitational waves (GWs) in the frequency band of ground-based detectors. They are expected to emit quasi-monochromatic, long-duration GW signals, called continuous waves (CWs), due to their deviations from spherical symmetry. The degree of such deformations, and hence the information about the internal structure of an NS, is encoded in a dimension-less parameter ε called ellipticity. Searches for CW signals from isolated Galactic NSs have shown to be sensitive to ellipticities as low as $\varepsilon \sim \mathcal {O}(10^{-9})$. These searches are optimal for detecting and characterizing GWs from individual NSs, but they are not designed to measure the properties of NSs as population, such as the average ellipticity εav. These ensemble properties can be determined by the measurement of the stochastic gravitational-wave background (SGWB) arising from the superposition of GW signals from individually undetectable NSs. In this work, we perform a cross-correlation search for such a SGWB using the data from the first three observation runs of Advanced LIGO and Virgo. Finding no evidence for an SGWB signal, we set upper limits on the dimension-less energy density parameter Ωgw(f). Using these results, we also constrain the average ellipticity of Galactic NSs and five NS ‘hotspots’, as a function of the number of NSs emitting GWs within the frequency band of the search Nband. We find $\varepsilon _{\mathrm{av}} \lesssim 1.8 \times 10^{-8}$, with Nband = 1.6 × 107, for Galactic NSs, and $\varepsilon _{\mathrm{av}} \lesssim [3.5-11.8]\times 10^{-7}$, with Nband = 1.6 × 1010, for NS hotspots.

Joint search for isolated sources and an unresolved confusion background in pulsar timing array data

Supermassive black hole binaries are the most promising source of gravitational-waves in the frequency band accessible to pulsar timing arrays. Most of these binaries will be too distant to detect individually, but together they will form an approximately stochastic background that can be detected by measuring the correlation pattern induced between pairs of pulsars. A small number of nearby and especially massive systems may stand out from this background and be detected individually. Analyses have previously been developed to search for stochastic signals and isolated signals separately. Here we present BayesHopper, an algorithm capable of jointly searching for both signal components simultaneously using trans-dimensional Bayesian inference. Our implementation uses the reversible jump Markov chain Monte Carlo method for sampling the relevant parameter space with changing dimensionality. We have tested BayesHopper on various simulated datasets. We find that it gives results consistent with fixed-dimensional methods when tested on data with a stochastic background or data with a single binary. For the full problem of analyzing a dataset with both a background and multiple black hole binaries, we find two kinds of interactions between the binary and background components. First, the background effectively increases the noise level, thus making individual binary signals less significant. Second, weak binary signals can be absorbed by the background model due to the natural parsimony of Bayesian inference. Because of its flexible model structure, we anticipate that BayesHopper will outperform existing approaches when applied to realistic data sets produced from population synthesis models.

Gravitational waves from extreme-mass-ratio inspirals using general parametrized metrics

Future space-borne interferometers will be able to detect gravitational waves at $10^{-3}$ to $10^{-1}$ Hz. At this band extreme-mass-ratio inspirals (EMRIs) can be promising gravitational wave sources. In this paper, we investigate possibility of testing Kerr hypothesis against a parametrized non-Kerr metric by matching EMRI signals. However, EMRIs from either equatorial orbits or inclined orbits suffer from the "confusion problem". Our results show that, within the time scale before radiation flux plays an important role, small and moderate deviations from the Kerr spacetime($|\delta_i|<1$) can be discerned only when spin parameter is high. In most cases, the EMRI waveforms related with a non-Kerr metric can be mimicked by the waveform templates produced with a Kerr black hole.

Follow-up procedure for gravitational wave searches from isolated neutron stars using the time-domain -statistic method

Among promising sources of gravitational waves are long-lived nearly periodic signals produced by rotating, asymmetric neutron stars. Depending on the astrophysical scenario, the sources of asymmetry may have thermal, viscous, elastic and/or magnetic origin. In this work we introduce a follow-up procedure for an all-sky search for gravitational wave signals from rotating neutron stars. The procedure denoted as Followup implements matched-filtering -statistic method. We describe data analysis methods and algorithms used in the procedure. We present tests of the Followup for artificial signals added to white, Gaussian noise. The tests show a good agreement with the theoretical predictions. The Followup will become part of the Time-Domain -statistic pipeline that is routinely used for all-sky searches of LIGO and Virgo detector data.

Constraining the Neutron Star Radius with Joint Gravitational-wave and Short Gamma-Ray Burst Observations of Neutron Star–Black Hole Coalescing Binaries

Abstract Coalescing neutron star (NS)–black hole (BH) binaries are promising sources of gravitational-waves (GWs) that are predicted to be detected within the next few years by current GW observatories. If the NS is tidally disrupted outside the BH innermost stable circular orbit, an accretion torus may form, and this could eventually power a short gamma-ray burst (SGRB). The observation of an SGRB in coincidence with gravitational radiation from an NS–BH coalescence would confirm the association between the two phenomena and also give us new insights into NS physics. We present here a new method to measure NS radii and thus constrain the NS equation of state using joint SGRB and GW observations of NS–BH mergers. We show that in the event of a joint detection with a realistic GW signal-to-noise ratio of 10, the NS radius can be constrained to ≲20% accuracy at 90% confidence.

Neutron Star–Black Hole Coalescence Rate Inferred from Macronova Observations

Abstract Neutron star–black hole (NS–BH) coalescences are widely believed to be promising gravitational-wave sources in the era of advanced detectors of LIGO/Virgo, but the rate of this population is highly uncertain due to the lack of direct detection of such binaries. There is growing evidence for the connection between the observed three luminous macronova (also known as kilonova) events and NS–BH mergers. In this work, we propose, for the first time based on such a link, a fiducial lower limit of NS–BH coalescence rate density , where is the typical half-opening angle of the GRB ejecta. After marginalizing over distributions of black hole masses and spins, we find a rate density , depending upon the equation of state (EoS) of NS material and the properties of the NS–BH system. With the O1 non-observation by advanced LIGO, we show a preference for NS–BH systems with a stiffer NS EoS and a larger contribution from low-mass/high-spin BHs. Our estimate predicts the first detection of an NS–BH system can be as early as the late O2 run or the early O3 run. We expect that future multi-messenger observations can much better constrain NS–BH systems’ properties.

Constructing gravitational waves from generic spin-precessing compact binary inspirals

The coalescence of compact objects is one of the most promising sources of gravitational waves for ground-based interferometric detectors, such as advanced LIGO and Virgo. Generically, com- pact objects in binaries are expected to be spinning with spin angular momenta misaligned with the orbital angular momentum, causing the orbital plane to precess. This precession adds rich structure to the gravitational waves, introducing such complexity that an analytic closed-form description has been unavailable until now. We here construct the first closed-form frequency- domain gravitational waveforms that are valid for generic spin-precessing quasicircular compact binary inspirals. We first construct time-domain gravitational waves by solving the post-Newtonian precession equations of motion with radiation reaction through multiple scale analysis. We then Fourier transform these time-domain waveforms with the method of shifted uniform asymptotics to obtain closed-form expressions for frequency-domain waveforms. We study the accuracy of these analytic, frequency-domain waveforms relative to waveforms obtained by numerically evolving the post-Newtonian equations of motion and find that they are suitable for unbiased parameter estimation for 99.2%(94.6%) of the binary configurations we studied at a signal-to-noise ratio of 10(25). These new frequency-domain waveforms could be used for detection and parameter estimation studies due to their accuracy and low computational cost.

General relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations of binary neutron star mergers forming a long-lived neutron star

Merging binary neutron stars (BNSs) represent the ultimate targets for multimessenger astronomy, being among the most promising sources of gravitational waves (GWs), and, at the same time, likely accompanied by a variety of electromagnetic counterparts across the entire spectrum, possibly including short gamma-ray bursts (SGRBs) and kilonova/macronova transients. Numerical relativity simulations play a central role in the study of these events. In particular, given the importance of magnetic fields, various aspects of this investigation require general relativistic magnetohydrodynamics (GRMHD). So far, most GRMHD simulations focused the attention on BNS mergers leading to the formation of a hypermassive NS, which, in turn, collapses within few tens of ms into a black hole surrounded by an accretion disk. However, recent observations suggest that a significant fraction of these systems could form a long-lived NS remnant, which will either collapse on much longer timescales or remain indefinitely stable. Despite the profound implications for the evolution and the emission properties of the system, a detailed investigation of this alternative evolution channel is still missing. Here, we follow this direction and present a first detailed GRMHD study of BNS mergers forming a long-lived NS. We consider magnetized binaries with different mass ratios and equations of state and analyze the structure of the NS remnants, the rotation profiles, the accretion disks, the evolution and amplification of magnetic fields, and the ejection of matter. Moreover, we discuss the connection with the central engine of SGRBs and provide order-of-magnitude estimates for the kilonova/macronova signal. Finally, we study the GW emission, with particular attention to the post-merger phase.

Impact of an improved neutrino energy estimate on outflows in neutron star merger simulations

Binary neutron star mergers are promising sources of gravitational waves for ground-based detectors such as Advanced LIGO. Neutron-rich material ejected by these mergers may also be the main source of r-process elements in the Universe, while radioactive decays in the ejecta can power bright electromagnetic post-merger signals. Neutrino-matter interactions play a critical role in the evolution of the composition of the ejected material, which significantly impacts the outcome of nucleosynthesis and the properties of the associated electromagnetic signal. In this work, we present a simulation of a binary neutron star merger using an improved method for estimating the average neutrino energies in our energy-integrated neutrino transport scheme. These energy estimates are obtained by evolving the neutrino number density in addition to the neutrino energy and flux densities. We show that significant changes are observed in the composition of the polar ejecta when comparing our new results with earlier simulations in which the neutrino spectrum was assumed to be the same everywhere in optically thin regions. In particular, we find that material ejected in the polar regions is less neutron rich than previously estimated. Our new estimates of the composition of the polar ejecta make it more likely that the color and timescale of the electromagnetic signal depend on the orientation of the binary with respect to an observer's line-of-sight. These results also indicate that important observable properties of neutron star mergers are sensitive to the neutrino energy spectrum, and may need to be studied through simulations including a more accurate, energy-dependent neutrino transport scheme.

Prospects for joint observations of gravitational waves and gamma rays from merging neutron star binaries

The detection of the events GW150914 and GW151226, both consistent with the merger of a binary black hole system (BBH), opened the era of gravitational wave (GW) astronomy. Besides BBHs, the most promising GW sources are the coalescences of binary systems formed by two neutron stars or a neutron star and a black hole. These mergers are thought to be connected with short Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs), therefore combined observations of GW and electromagnetic (EM) signals could definitively probe this association. We present a detailed study on the expectations for joint GW and high-energy EM observations of coalescences of binary systems of neutron stars with Advanced Virgo and LIGO and with the Fermi gamma-ray telescope. To this scope, we designed a dedicated Montecarlo simulation pipeline for the multimessenger emission and detection by GW and gamma-ray instruments, considering the evolution of the GW detector sensitivities. We show that the expected rate of joint detection is low during the Advanced Virgo and Advanced LIGO 2016–2017 run; however, as the interferometers approach their final design sensitivities, the rate will increase by ∼ a factor of ten. Future joint observations will help to constrain the association between short GRBs and binary systems and to solve the puzzle of the progenitors of GWs. Comparison of the joint detection rate with the ones predicted in this paper will help to constrain the geometry of the GRB jet.

Maximizing the probability of detecting an electromagnetic counterpart of gravitational-wave events

Compact binary coalescences are a promising source of gravitational waves for second-generation interferometric gravitational-wave detectors such as advanced LIGO and advanced Virgo. These are among the most promising sources for joint detection of electromagnetic (EM) and gravitational-wave (GW) emission. To maximize the science performed with these objects, it is essential to undertake a followup observing strategy that maximizes the likelihood of detecting the EM counterpart. We present a follow-up strategy that maximizes the counterpart detection probability, given a fixed investment of telescope time. We show how the prior assumption on the luminosity function of the electro-magnetic counterpart impacts the optimized followup strategy. Our results suggest that if the goal is to detect an EM counterpart from among a succession of GW triggers, the optimal strategy is to perform long integrations in the highest likelihood regions, with a time investment that is proportional to the $2/3$ power of the surface density of the GW location probability on the sky. In the future, this analysis framework will benefit significantly from the 3-dimensional localization probability.

MODELS OF KILONOVA/MACRONOVA EMISSION FROM BLACK HOLE–NEUTRON STAR MERGERS

ABSTRACT Black hole–neutron star (BH–NS) mergers are among the most promising gravitational-wave sources for ground-based detectors, and gravitational waves from BH–NS mergers are expected to be detected in the next few years. The simultaneous detection of electromagnetic counterparts with gravitational waves would provide rich information about merger events. Among the possible electromagnetic counterparts from BH–NS mergers is the so-called kilonova/macronova, emission powered by the decay of radioactive r-process nuclei, which is one of the best targets for follow-up observations. We derive fitting formulas for the mass and the velocity of ejecta from a generic BH–NS merger based on recently performed numerical-relativity simulations. We combine these fitting formulas with a new semi-analytic model for a BH–NS kilonova/macronova lightcurve, which reproduces the results of radiation-transfer simulations. Specifically, the semi-analytic model reproduces the results of each band magnitude obtained by the previous radiation-transfer simulations within ∼1 mag. By using this semi-analytic model we found that, at 400 Mpc, the kilonova/macronova is as bright as 22–24 mag for cases with a small chirp mass and a high black hole spin, and &gt;28 mag for a large chirp mass and a low black hole spin. We also apply our model to GRB 130603B as an illustration, and show that a BH–NS merger with a rapidly spinning black hole and a large neutron star radius is favored.

DYNAMICAL FORMATION SIGNATURES OF BLACK HOLE BINARIES IN THE FIRST DETECTED MERGERS BY LIGO

ABSTRACT The dynamical formation of stellar-mass black hole–black hole binaries has long been a promising source of gravitational waves for the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO). Mass segregation, gravitational focusing, and multibody dynamical interactions naturally increase the interaction rate between the most massive black holes in dense stellar systems, eventually leading them to merge. We find that dynamical interactions, particularly three-body binary formation, enhance the merger rate of black hole binaries with total mass M tot roughly as ∝ M tot β , with β ≳ 4. We find that this relation holds mostly independently of the initial mass function, but the exact value depends on the degree of mass segregation. The detection rate of such massive black hole binaries is only further enhanced by LIGO’s greater sensitivity to massive black hole binaries with M tot ≲ 80 M ⊙ . We find that for power-law BH mass functions dN/dM ∝ M −α with α ≤ 2, LIGO is most likely to detect black hole binaries with a mass twice that of the maximum initial black hole mass and a mass ratio near one. Repeated mergers of black holes inside the cluster result in about ∼5% of mergers being observed between two and three times the maximum initial black hole mass. Using these relations, one may be able to invert the observed distribution to the initial mass function with multiple detections of merging black hole binaries.

Studies on the high-energy follow-up of gravitational wave transient events

Second-generation gravitational wave interferometers, such as Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo, will soon reach sensitivities sufficient to first detect gravitational waves and open a new era in the multi-messenger investigations of the cosmos. The most violent and energetic astrophysical phenomena, including the mergers of compact objects or the core collapse of massive stars, are promising sources of gravitational waves, and are thought to be connected with transient phenomena such as Gamma Ray Bursts and supernovae. Combined observations of gravitational and electromagnetic signals from these events will thus provide a unique opportunity to unveil their progenitors and study the physics of compact objects. In particular, gamma-ray ground-based and space observatories such as Fermi or the Air Cherenkov Telescopes will be crucial to observe the high-energy electromagnetic counterparts of transient gravitational wave signals and provide a robust identification based on a precise sky localization. We will report on our studies of possible joint observation strategies carried on by gravitational interferometers and gamma-ray telescopes, with particular attention to the high-energy follow-up of Gamma Ray Bursts.

Low mass binary neutron star mergers: Gravitational waves and neutrino emission

Neutron star mergers are among the most promising sources of gravitational waves for advanced ground-based detectors. These mergers are also expected to power bright electromagnetic signals, in the form of short gamma-ray bursts, infrared/optical transients, and radio emission. Simulations of these mergers with fully general relativistic codes are critical to understand the merger and post-merger gravitational wave signals and their neutrinos and electromagnetic counterparts. In this paper, we employ the SpEC code to simulate the merger of low-mass neutron star binaries (two $1.2M_\odot$ neutron stars) for a set of three nuclear-theory based, finite temperature equations of state. We show that the frequency peaks of the post-merger gravitational wave signal are in good agreement with predictions obtained from simulations using a simpler treatment of gravity. We find, however, that only the fundamental mode of the remnant is excited for long periods of time: emission at the secondary peaks is damped on a millisecond timescale in the simulated binaries. For such low-mass systems, the remnant is a massive neutron star which, depending on the equation of state, is either permanently stable or long-lived. We observe strong excitations of l=2, m=2 modes, both in the massive neutron star and in the form of hot, shocked tidal arms in the surrounding accretion torus. We estimate the neutrino emission of the remnant using a neutrino leakage scheme and, in one case, compare these results with a gray two-moment neutrino transport scheme. We confirm the complex geometry of the neutrino emission, also observed in previous simulations with neutrino leakage, and show explicitly the presence of important differences in the neutrino luminosity, disk composition, and outflow properties between the neutrino leakage and transport schemes.

Effects of the Central Density Profile and the Stellar Mass Function of Merging Galaxies on Eccentricities and Coalescence Times of Supermassive Black Hole Binaries

AbstractIf able to coalesce in a Hubble time, Supermassive Black hole (SMBH) binaries are very promising sources of gravitational waves (GW). Our earlier studies have shown that SMBH binaries coalesce in post-merger galactic nuclei having triaxial or axisymmetric geometry in a few billion years. In this study, we model the complete evolution of SMBH binaries formed as a result of galaxy mergers having central density profiles that vary from shallow to very steep including a stellar mass function. Energy and angular momentum loss due to GW emission is taken into account using the post-Newtonian approximation. We carry out ten such simulations for each central density profile. The eccentricity of the SMBH binaries remain very high in shallow cusps and decrease systematically for steeper cusps. The coalescence times range from 0.6 to 1.5 Gyr with shorter times for steeper profiles. Typical coalescence times less than a Gyr strengthen our expectation that SMBH binaries should be very promising sources of GW radiation over a wide redshift range.

Limits on First Structure Formation from Pulsar Timing

AbstractBy monitoring the arrival times from millisecond pulsars for years to decades, it is possible to search for, or place limits on, nanohertz frequency gravitational radiation. The most promising source of gravitational waves in this band is a stochastic background emitted from a population of supermassive black hole binaries. As these binaries are the direct product of of galaxy mergers and the properties of the SMBHs correlated strongly with their host galaxies, the gravitational wave emission of the binaries can be used to study how galaxies evolve. Here I discuss how pulsar timing can be used to search for gravitational waves, and how limits on the strength of the background are being used to challenge models of supermassive black hole formation and evolution.

Prospects for doubling the range of Advanced LIGO

In the coming years, the gravitational wave community will be optimizing detector performance for a variety of astrophysical sources that make competing demands on the detector sensitivity in different frequency bands. In this paper we describe a number of technologies that are being developed as anticipated upgrades to the Advanced LIGO detector, and quantify the potential sensitivity improvement they offer. Specifically, we consider squeezed light injection for reduction of quantum noise, detector design and materials changes which reduce thermal noise, and mirrors with significantly increased mass. We explore how each of these technologies impacts the detection of the most promising gravitational wave sources, and suggest an effective progression of upgrades which culminate in a factor of two broadband sensitivity improvement.

Detectability of eccentric compact binary coalescences with advanced gravitational-wave detectors

Compact binary coalescences are a promising source of gravitational waves for second-generation interferometric gravitational-wave detectors such as advanced LIGO and advanced Virgo. While most binaries are expected to possess circular orbits, some may be eccentric, for example, if they are formed through dynamical capture. Eccentric orbits can create difficulty for matched filtering searches due to the challenges of creating effective template banks to detect these signals. In previous work, we showed how seedless clustering can be used to detect low-mass ($M_\text{total}\leq10M_\odot$) compact binary coalescences for both spinning and eccentric systems, assuming a circular post-Newtonian expansion. Here, we describe a parameterization that is designed to maximize sensitivity to low-eccentricity ($0\leq\epsilon\leq0.6$) systems, derived from the analytic equations. We show that this parameterization provides a robust and computationally efficient method for detecting eccentric low-mass compact binaries. Based on these results, we conclude that advanced detectors will have a chance of detecting eccentric binaries if optimistic models prove true. However, a null observation is unlikely to firmly rule out models of eccentric binary populations.
