GRB Progenitor Classification from Gamma-Ray Burst Prompt and Afterglow Observations

Abstract Using an established classification technique, we leverage standard observations and analyses to predict the progenitors of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). This technique, utilizing support vector machine statistics, provides a more nuanced prediction than the previous two-component Gaussian mixture in duration of the prompt gamma-ray emission. Based on further covariance testing from Fermi/Gamma Ray Burst Monitor, Swift/Burst Alert Telescope, and Swift/X-Ray Telescope data, we find that our classification based only on prompt emission properties gives perspective on the recent evidence that mergers and collapsars exist in both “long” and “short” GRB populations.

The host of GRB 171205A in 3D

Long GRB hosts at z < 1 are usually low-mass, low-metallicity star-forming galaxies. Here we present the most detailed, spatially resolved study of the host of GRB 171205A so far, a grand-design barred spiral galaxy at z = 0.036. Our analysis includes MUSE integral field spectroscopy complemented with high-spatial-resolution UV/VIS HST imaging and CO(1−0) and H I 21 cm data. The GRB is located in a small star-forming region in a spiral arm of the galaxy at a deprojected distance of ∼8 kpc from the center. The galaxy shows a smooth negative metallicity gradient and the metallicity at the GRB site is half solar, slightly below the mean metallicity at the corresponding distance from the center. Star formation in this galaxy is concentrated in a few H II regions between 5 and 7 kpc from the center and at the end of the bar, inwards from the GRB region; however the H II region hosting the GRB is in the top 10% of the regions with the highest specific star-formation rate. The stellar population at the GRB site has a very young component (< 5 Myr) that contributes a significant part of the light. Ionized and molecular gas show only minor deviations at the end of the bar. A parallel study found an asymmetric H I distribution and some additional gas near the position of the GRB, which might explain the star-forming region of the GRB site. Our study shows that long GRBs can occur in many types of star-forming galaxies; however the actual GRB sites have consistently low metallicity, high star formation rates, and a young population. Furthermore, gas inflow or interactions triggering the star formation producing the GRB progenitor might not be evident in ionized or even molecular gas but only in H I.

Repeated Partial Disruptions in a White Dwarf–Neutron Star or White Dwarf–Black Hole Merger Modulate the Prompt Emission of Long-duration Merger-type GRBs

The progenitors of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have long been an unresolved issue. GRB 230307A stands out as an exceptionally bright event, belonging to the long-duration GRBs but also exhibiting a late-emission component reminiscent of a kilonova. Together with the similar events GRBs 060614 and 211211A, they make up a new subgroup of GRBs with intriguing progenitors. If such long-duration merger-type GRBs originated from the coalescence of a white dwarf (WD) with a neutron star (NS) or a black hole (BH), as proposed in the recent literature, then the larger tidal disruption radius of the WD, together with a nonnegligible residual orbital eccentricity, would make repeated partial tidal disruptions inevitable. This may modulate the mass accretion and jet launching process at the NS or BH, resulting in a quasiperiodic modulation (QPM) in the light curve of the GRB, with a period equal to the orbital period. The detection of potential QPMs during the early episode of prompt emission of these three GRBs supports this scenario, and the relatively slow QPM (> 1 s) suggests that the lighter object cannot be an NS. We propose that the progenitor system of GRBs 230307A, 060614, and 211211A consist of a WD of mass 1.3 M ⊙, 0.9 M ⊙, and 1.4 M ⊙, respectively, and an NS (or BH). After several cycles of modulations, the WD is completely destroyed, and the accretion of the remaining debris dominates the extended emission episode.

The Density and Ionization Profiles of Optically Dark and High-Redshift GRBs Probed by X-ray Absorption

The X-ray column density (NHX) of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) can probe the local environment of their progenitors over a wide redshift range. Previous work has suggested an increasing trend as a function of redshift. The relevance of this current analysis relies on investigating the selection bias method, such as the effect of the X-ray spectrum in high-redshift GRBs, which complicates the measurement of small NHX; this has yet to be fully evaluated or discussed elsewhere. In this work, we evaluated these effects through simulations to define appropriate observational limits in the NHX versus redshift plane. We then applied a one-sided nonparametric method developed by Efron and Petrosian. Within the framework of this method, we investigated the redshift dependence of NHX and the local distribution function. Our results show that the evolution of NHX with redshift firmly exists with a significance of more than four sigma and follows a power law of (1+z)1.39(+0.22,−0.27). Based on these analyses and previous studies, the GRB progenitor mass varies but is more massive in the high-redshift environment and has a higher gas column density. This suggests that part of the luminosity evolution of GRBs, which has been widely reported, may be due to the evolution of the progenitor’s mass. Using the same method, we demonstrate that optically dark GRBs show a consistent evolution: (1+z)1.15(+0.67,−0.83). By applying the Kolmogorov–Smirnov (KS) test, it is shown that optically dark GRBs have statistically identical flux and photon index distributions compared to normal GRBs, but the NHX is systematically larger. This result suggests that the darkness of some GRB populations is not due to an intrinsic mechanism, but rather because a higher density surrounds them.

Using the COSMIC Population Synthesis Code to Investigate How Metallicity Affects the Rates of Interacting Binaries

We use COSMIC, a galaxy population synthesis code, to investigate how metallicity affects the rate of formation of massive stars with a closely orbiting compact object companion. Metallicity—a crucial component to stellar evolution and binary system formation—can affect how and when these systems form. We present the formation time of these systems at different metallicities, and the anti-correlation the rates have with metallicity. In particular, these systems occur about 10 times more frequently at metallicities between Z = 2 × 10−4 and 2 × 10−3, compared to those between Z = 2 × 10−3 and 2 × 10−2. This work serves as a prerequisite to predicting global rates of these systems as a function of redshift, ultimately giving crucial insight into our understanding of the progenitors of long gamma-ray bursts and their evolution over cosmic time.

Numerical relativity simulations of black hole and relativistic jet formation

ABSTRACT We investigate impacts of stellar rotation and magnetic fields on black hole (BH) formation and its subsequent explosive activities, by conducting axisymmetric radiation-magnetohydrodynamics simulations of gravitational collapse of a 70 $\mathrm{M}_\odot$ star with two-moment multi energy neutrino transport in full general relativity for the first time. Due to its dense stellar structure, all models cannot avoid the eventual BH formation even though a strongly magnetized model experiences the so-called magnetorotational explosion prior to the BH formation. One intriguing phenomenon observed in the strongly magnetized model is the formation of a relativistic jet in the post-BH formation. The relativistic jet is the outcome of a combination of strong magnetic fields and low-density materials above the BH. The jet further enhances the explosion energy beyond $\sim 10^{52}$ erg, which is well exceeding the gravitational overburden ahead of the shock. Our self-consistent supernova models demonstrate that rotating magnetized massive stars at the high-mass end of supernova progenitors could be a potential candidate of hypernova and long gamma-ray burst progenitors.

Probing Electromagnetic Gravitational-wave Emission Coincidence in a Type I Binary-driven Hypernova Family of Long Gamma-Ray Bursts at Very High Redshift

The repointing time of the X-Ray Telescope (XRT) instrument on the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory satellite has posed challenges in observing and studying the early X-ray emissions within ≈40 s after a gamma-ray burst (GRB) trigger. To address this issue, we adopt a novel approach that capitalizes on the cosmological time dilation in GRBs with redshifts ranging from 3 to 9. Applying this strategy to Swift/XRT data, we investigate the earliest X-ray emissions of 368 GRBs from the Swift catalog, including short and long GRBs. We compare the observed time delay between the GRB trigger and the initial Swift/XRT observation, measured in the GRB observer frame, and the corresponding cosmological rest-frame time delay (RTD). This technique is here used in the analysis of GRB 090423 at z = 8.233 (RTD ∼8.2 s), GRB 090429B at z ≈ 9.4 (RTD ∼10.1 s), and GRB 220101A at z = 4.61 (RTD ∼14.4 s). The cosmological time dilation enables us to observe the very early X-ray afterglow emission in these three GRBs. We thus validate the observation of the collapse of the carbon–oxygen core and the coeval newborn neutron star (νNS) formation triggering the GRB event in the binary-driven hypernova (BdHN) scenario. We also evidence the νNS spin-up due to supernova ejecta fallback and its subsequent slowing down due to the X-ray/optical/radio synchrotron afterglow emission. A brief gravitational-wave signal may separate the two stages owing to a fast-spinning νNS triaxial-to-axisymmetric transition. We also analyze the long GRB redshift distribution for the different BdHN types and infer that BdHNe II and III may originate the NS binary progenitors of short GRBs.

Reconstruction of luminosity function from flux-limited samples

ABSTRACT The properties of the progenitors of gamma-ray bursts and of their environment are encoded in their luminosity function and cosmic formation rate. They are usually recovered from a flux-limited sample based on Lynden-Bell’s $c^{-}$ method. However, this method is based on the assumption that the luminosity is independent of the redshift. Observationally, if correlated, people use non-parametric $\tau$ statistical method to remove this correlation through the transformation, $L^{\prime }=L/g(z)$, where z is the burst redshift, and $g(z)=(1+z)^{k}$ parametrizes the underlying luminosity evolution. However, the application of this method to different observations could result in very different luminosity functions. By the means of Monte Carlo simulation, in this paper, we demonstrate that the origin of an observed correlation, measured by the $\tau$ statistical method, is a complex combination of multiple factors when the underlying data are correlated. Thus, in this case, it is difficult to unbiasedly reconstruct the underlying population distribution from a truncated sample, unless the detailed information of the intrinsic correlation is accurately known in advance. In addition, we argue that an intrinsic correlation between luminosity function and formation rate is unlikely eliminated by a misconfigured transformation, and the $g(z)$, derived from a truncated sample with the $\tau$ statistical method, does not necessarily represent its underlying luminosity evolution.

Significant Cocoon Emission and Photosphere Duration Stretching in GRB 211211A: A Burst from a Neutron Star−Black Hole Merger

The radiation mechanism (thermal photosphere or magnetic synchrotron) and the progenitor of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are under hot debate. Recently discovered, the prompt long-duration (∼10 s, normally from the collapse of massive stars) property of GRB 211211A strongly conflicts with its association with a kilonova (normally from the merger of two compact objects, NS–NS, NS–BH, or NS–WD, duration ≲2 s). In this paper, we find that the probability photosphere model with a structured jet can satisfactorily explain this peculiar long duration, through the duration stretching effect (∼3 times) on the intrinsic longer (∼3 s) duration of an NS–BH merger, the observed empirical 2SBPL spectrum (with soft low-energy index α of ∼−1), and its evolution. In addition, much evidence of the NS–BH merger origin is found, especially the good fit of the afterglow-subtracted optical−near-IR light curves by the significant thermal cocoon emission and the sole thermal “red” kilonova component. Finally, a convincing new explanation for the X-ray afterglow plateau is revealed.

Impact of anisotropic ejecta on jet dynamics and afterglow emission in binary neutron-star mergers

ABSTRACT Binary neutron-stars mergers widely accepted as potential progenitors of short gamma-ray bursts. After the remnant of the merger has collapsed to a black hole, a jet is powered and may breakout from the the matter expelled during the collision and the subsequent wind emission. The interaction of the jet with the ejecta may affect its dynamics and the resulting electromagnetic counterparts. We here examine how an inhomogeneous and anisotropic distribution of ejecta affects such dynamics, dictating the properties of the jet-ejecta cocoon and of the afterglow radiated by the jet upon deceleration. More specifically, we carry out general-relativistic hydrodynamical simulations of relativistic jets launched within a variety of geometrically inhomogeneous and anisotropic distributions of ejected matter. We find that different anisotropies impact the variance of the afterglow light curves as a function of the jet luminosity and ejected mass. A considerable amount of the jet energy is deposited in the cocoon through the jet-ejecta interaction with a small but important dependence on the properties of the ejecta. Furthermore, all configurations show a two-component behaviour for the polar structure of the jet, with a narrow core at large energies and Lorentz factors and a shallow segment at high latitudes from the jet axis. Hence, afterglows measured on off-axis lines of sight could be used to deduce the properties of the ejected matter, but also that the latter need to be properly accounted for when modelling the afterglow signal and the jet-launching mechanisms.

Heavy-element production in a compact object merger observed by JWST.

The mergers of binary compact objects such as neutron stars and black holes are of central interest to several areas of astrophysics, including as the progenitors of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs)1, sources of high-frequency gravitational waves (GWs)2 and likely production sites for heavy-element nucleosynthesis by means of rapid neutron capture (the r-process)3. Here we present observations of the exceptionally bright GRB 230307A. We show that GRB 230307A belongs to the class of long-duration GRBs associated with compact object mergers4-6 and contains a kilonova similar to AT2017gfo, associated with the GW merger GW170817 (refs. 7-12). We obtained James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) mid-infrared imaging and spectroscopy 29 and 61 days after the burst. The spectroscopy shows an emission line at 2.15 microns, which we interpret as tellurium (atomic mass A = 130) and a very red source, emitting most of its light in the mid-infrared owing to the production of lanthanides. These observations demonstrate that nucleosynthesis in GRBs can create r-process elements across a broad atomic mass range and play a central role in heavy-element nucleosynthesis across the Universe.

Pre-merger alert to detect prompt emission in very-high-energy gamma-rays from binary neutron star mergers: Einstein Telescope and Cherenkov Telescope Array synergy

The current generation of very-high-energy gamma-ray (VHE; E > 30 GeV) detectors (MAGIC and H.E.S.S.) have recently demonstrated the ability to detect the afterglow emission of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). However, the GRB prompt emission, typically observed in the 10 keV–10 MeV band, is still undetected at higher energies. Here, we investigate the perspectives of multi-messenger observations to detect the earliest VHE emission from short GRBs. Considering binary neutron star mergers as progenitors of short GRBs, we evaluate the joint detection efficiency of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) observing in synergy with the third generation of gravitational-wave detectors, such as the Einstein Telescope (ET) and Cosmic Explorer (CE). In particular, we evaluate the expected capabilities to detect and localize gravitational-wave events in the inspiral phase and to provide an early warning alert able to drive the VHE search. We compute the amount of possible joint detections by considering several observational strategies, and demonstrate that the sensitivity of CTA make the detection of the VHE emission possible even if it is several orders fainter than that observed at 10 keV–10 MeV. We discuss the results in terms of possible scenarios of the production of VHE photons from binary neutron star mergers.

The ultra-long GRB 220627A at z = 3.08

Context. GRB 220627A is a rare burst with two distinct γ-ray emission episodes separated by almost 1000 s that triggered the Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor twice. High-energy GeV emission was detected by the Fermi Large Area Telescope coincident with the first emission episode but not the second. The discovery of the optical afterglow with MeerLICHT led to MUSE observations which secured the burst redshift to z = 3.08, making this the most distant ultra-long gamma-ray burst (GRB) detected to date. Aims. The progenitors of some ultra-long GRBs have been suggested in the literature to be different to those of normal long GRBs. Our aim is to determine whether the afterglow and host properties of GRB 220627A agree with this interpretation. Methods. We performed empirical and theoretical modelling of the afterglow data within the external forward shock framework, and determined the metallicity of the GRB environment through modelling the absorption lines in the MUSE spectrum. Results. Our optical data show evidence for a jet break in the light curve at ∼1.2 days, while our theoretical modelling shows a preference for a homogeneous circumburst medium. Our forward shock parameters are typical for the wider GRB population, and we find that the environment of the burst is characterised by a sub-solar metallicity. Conclusions. Our observations and modelling of GRB 220627A do not suggest that a different progenitor compared to the progenitor of normal long GRBs is required. We find that more observations of ultra-long GRBs are needed to determine if they form a separate population with distinct prompt and afterglow features, and possibly distinct progenitors.

Long-duration Gamma-Ray Burst Progenitors and Magnetar Formation

Millisecond magnetars produced in the center of dying massive stars are one prominent model to power gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). However, their detailed nature remains a mystery. To explore the effects of the initial mass, rotation rate, wind mass loss, and metallicity on the GRB progenitors and the newborn magnetar properties, we evolve 227 of 10–30 M ⊙ single star models from the pre-main sequence to core collapse by using the stellar evolution code MESA. The presupernova properties, the compactness parameter, and the magnetar characteristics of models with different initial parameters are presented. The compactness parameter remains a nonmonotonic function of the initial mass and initial rotation rate when the effects of varying metallicity and the “Dutch” wind scale factor are taken into account. We find that the initial rotation rate and mass play the dominant roles in whether a star can evolve into a GRB progenitor. The minimum rotation rate necessary to generate a magnetar gradually reduces as the initial mass increases. The greater the initial metallicity and “Dutch” wind scale factor, the larger the minimum rotation rate required to produce a magnetar. In other words, massive stars with low metallicity are more likely to harbor magnetars. Furthermore, we present the estimated period, magnetic field strength, and masses of magnetars in all cases. The typical rotational energy of these millisecond magnetars is sufficient to power long-duration GRBs.

An Observational Upper Limit on the Rate of Gamma-Ray Bursts with Neutron Star–Black Hole Merger Progenitors

Compact-object binary mergers consisting of one neutron star and one black hole (NSBHs) have long been considered promising progenitors for gamma-ray bursts, whose central engine remains poorly understood. Using gravitational-wave constraints on the population-level NSBH mass and spin distributions we find that at most 20 Gpc−3 yr−1 of gamma-ray bursts in the local universe can have NSBH progenitors.

The Central Engine of GRB170817A and the Energy Budget Issue: Kerr Black Hole versus Neutron Star in a Multi-Messenger Analysis

Upcoming LIGO–Virgo–KAGRA (LVK) observational runs offer new opportunities to probe the central engines of extreme transient events. Cosmological gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and core-collapse supernovae (CC-SNe), in particular, are believed to be powered by compact objects, i.e., a neutron star (NS) or black hole (BH). A principal distinction between an NS and BH is the energy reservoir in the angular momentum EJ. Per unit mass, this reaches a few percent in a rapidly rotating NS and tens of percent in a Kerr BH, respectively. Calorimetry by EGW on a descending chirp may break the degeneracy between the two. We review this approach, anticipating new observational opportunities for planned LVK runs. GRB170817A is the first event revealing its central engine by a descending chirp in gravitational radiation. An accompanying energy output EGW≃3.5%M⊙c2 is observed during GRB170817A in the aftermath of the double neutron star merger GW170817. The progenitors of normal long GRBs, on the other hand, are the rare offspring of CC-SNe of type Ib/c. Yet, the extended emission to SGRBs (SGRBEEs) shares similar durations and the same Amati-relation of the prompt GRB emission of LGRBs, pointing to a common central engine. The central engine of these extreme transient events has, hitherto, eluded EM observations alone, even when including neutrino observations, as in SN1987A. The trigger signaling the birth of the compact object and the evolution powering these events is expected to be revealed by an accompanying GW signal, perhaps similar to that of GRB170817A. For GRB170817A, EGW exceeds EJ in the initial hyper-massive neutron star (HMNS) produced in the immediate aftermath of GW170817. It identifies the spin-down of a Kerr BH of mass ∼2.4M⊙ defined by the total mass of GW170817. This observation is realized in spectrograms generated by Butterfly matched filtering, a time-symmetric analysis with equal sensitivity to ascending and descending chirps, calibrated by signal injection experiments. It is implemented on a heterogeneous computing platform with synaptic parallel processing in F90/C++/C99 under bash. A statistical significance of 5.5σ is derived from multi-messenger event timing, based on a probability of false alarm (PFA) factored over a probability p1=8.3×10−4 by causality and a p-value p2=4.9×10−5 of consistency between H1 and L1 observations. For upcoming observations, this approach may be applied to similar emissions from SNIb/c and GRBs in the Local Universe, upon the mass-scaling of present results by the mass of their putative black hole-central engines.

Evidence for Two Distinct Populations of Kilonova-associated Gamma-Ray Bursts

Identification of gamma-ray burst (GRB) progenitors based on the duration of their prompt emission (T 90) has faced several roadblocks recently. Long-duration GRBs (with T 90 > 2 s) have traditionally been thought to be originating from the collapse of massive stars and the short-duration ones (with T 90 < 2 s) from compact binary mergers. However, recent observations of a long GRB associated with a kilonova (KN) and a short GRB with supernova association demand a more detailed classification of the GRB population. In this Letter, we focus on GRBs associated with KNe, believed to be originating from mergers of binaries involving neutron stars (NSs). We make use of the GRB prompt-emission light curves of the Swift/BAT 2022 GRB catalog and employ machine-learning algorithms to study the classification of GRB progenitors. Our analysis reveals that there are five distinct clusters of GRBs, of which the KN-associated GRBs are located in two separate clusters, indicating they may have been produced by different progenitors. We argue that these clusters may be due to subclasses of binary neutron star and/or NS–black hole mergers. We also discuss the implications of these findings for future gravitational-wave observations and how those observations may help in understanding these clusters better.

On the Anticorrelation between Duration and Redshift in Gamma-Ray Bursts

For gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) with durations greater than two seconds (so-called long GRBs), the intrinsic prompt gamma-ray emission appears, on average, to last longer for bursts at lower redshifts. We explore the nature of this duration–redshift anticorrelation, describing systems and conditions in which this cosmological evolution could arise. In particular, we explore its dependence on the metallicity of a massive star progenitor, because we can securely count on the average stellar metallicity to increase with decreasing redshift. Although stars with higher metallicity/lower redshift lose mass and angular momentum through line-driven winds, in some cases these stars are able to form more extended accretion disks when they collapse, potentially leading to longer-duration GRBs. We also examine how this duration–redshift trend may show up in interacting binary models composed of a massive star and compact object companion, recently suggested to be the progenitors of radio-bright GRBs. Under certain conditions, mass loss and equation-of-state effects from massive stars with higher metallicity and lower redshift can decrease the binary separation. This can then lead to spin-up of the massive star and allow for a longer-duration GRB upon the massive star’s collapse. Finally, the duration–redshift trend may also be supported by a relatively larger population of small-separation binaries born in situ at low redshift.

Comparison of different models for gravitational and electromagnetic radiation of binary neutron star mergers

The neutron star binary merger is one of the most energetic phenomena in our Universe. Based on the calculation of gravitational radiation (GR) with the separate consideration of revolution and stellar rotation, and electromagnetic radiation (ER) with unipolar induction DC circuit model and magnetic dipole model, the results are compared to analyse the extent to which the stellar rotation will affect the total gravitational radiation power. Besides, the relationships between radiation power and the related parameters (e.g., orbital radius and stellar mass) are investigated. Furthermore, the feasibility of different types of binary star merger as the progenitor of fast radio bursts and gamma-ray bursts were studied based on the two models of ER, obtaining that binary neutron star and neutron star-white dwarf systems are among the possible progenitors. Finally, the radiation power of both GR and ER are compared under the same conditions. According to the results, the energy dissipation of the system is dominated by gravitational radiation. These results shed lights on further studies on the radiation processes of binary neutron star mergers and binary star systems.

The internal metallicity distributions of simulated galaxies from EAGLE, Illustris, and IllustrisTNG at z = 1.8–4 as probed by gamma-ray burst hosts

ABSTRACT Massive stars are thought to be progenitors of long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), most likely with a bias favouring low-metallicity progenitors. Because galaxies do not have a constant metallicity throughout, the combination of line-of-sight absorption metallicity inferred from GRB afterglow spectroscopy and of host galaxy global metallicity derived from emission lines diagnostics represents a powerful way to probe both the bias function for GRB progenitors and the chemical inhomogeneities across star-forming regions. In this study, we predict the relationship between Zabs and Zemiss using three different hydrodynamical cosmological simulations: Illustris, EAGLE, and IllustrisTNG. We find that while the qualitative shape of the curve relating emission versus absorption metallicity remains the same, the predicted relationship between these two observables is significantly different between the simulations. Using data for the host galaxy of GRB121024A for which both Zabs and Zemiss have been measured, we find marginal support for the Illustris simulation as producing the most-realistic internal metallicity distributions within star-forming galaxies at cosmic noon. Overall, all simulations predict similar properties for the bulk of the GRB host galaxy population, but each has distinct features in the tail of the Zabs-Zemiss distribution that in principle allow to discriminate between models if a sufficiently large sample of observations are available (i.e. N ≳ 11 on average). Substantial progress is expected in the near future, with upcoming JWST/NIRspec observations of 10 GRB host galaxies for which absorption metallicity from the afterglow spectra exists.
