Polychlorinated biphenyl and polybrominated diphenyl ether profiles vary with feeding ecology and marine rearing distribution among 10 Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) stocks in the North Pacific Ocean

Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) along the west coast of North America have experienced significant declines in abundance and body size over recent decades due to several anthropogenic stressors. Understanding the reasons underlying the relatively high levels of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in Chinook stocks is an important need, as it informs recovery planning for this foundation species, as well for the Chinook-dependent Resident killer whales (Orcinus orca, RKW) of British Columbia (Canada) and Washington State (USA). We evaluated the influence of stock-related differences in feeding ecology, using stable isotopes, and marine rearing ground on the concentrations and patterns of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in Chinook salmon. A principal components analysis (PCA) revealed a clear divergence of PCB and PBDE congener patterns between Chinook with a nearshore rearing distribution (‘shelf resident’) versus a more offshore distribution. Shelf resident Chinook had 12-fold higher PCB concentrations and 46-fold higher PBDE concentrations relative to offshore stocks. Shelf resident Chinook had PCB and PBDE profiles that were heavier and dominated by more bioaccumulative congeners, respectively. The higher δ13C and δ15N in shelf resident Chinook compared to the offshore rearing stocks, and their different marine distributions explain the large divergence in contaminant levels and profiles, with shelf resident stocks being heavily influenced by land-based sources of industrial contamination. Results provide compelling new insight into the drivers of contaminant accumulation in Chinook salmon, raise important questions about the consequences for their health, and explain a major pathway to the heavily POP-contaminated Resident killer whales that consume them.

Atmospheric concentrations of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in passive air sampler from Batam Island, Indonesia

Air contamination by semi volatile organic compounds including toxic polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) has been a matter of global concern due to the important atmospheric transportation in contribution to their widely distribution in environment. This study aims at elucidating the levels and spatial distribution of PBDEs in the atmosphere derived from polyurethane foam passive air sampler (PUF-PAS) and identify potential sources in Batam Island. Fifteen PUF-PAS were deployed in various locations representing different background activities. After deployment around 2.5 months, PUFs were analyzed for forty-two PBDEs congeners from mono- to deca-BDE congeners using gas chromatography with mass spectrometry. PBDEs were widely detected ranging 7.2 – 2900 pg/m3. Significant high concentrations of PBDEs were found at public service areas than offices, residential and remote areas (p<0.05). In particular, high concentration was found in Marina Tanjung Riau (2900 pg/m3), whereas other locations were much lower including electronic shop (50 pg/m3), dumping site area (7.2-15 pg/m3), which indicating specific emission sources according to location. The PBDEs profiles are predominated by BDE-209 congener on average 81% (36-100) while other congeners were lower. This suggest that the presence of PBDEs in Batam Island is mainly due to the commercial formulation of Deca-BDE, of which consistent with its high consumption in Asia.

Biomagnification and elimination effects of persistent organic pollutants in a typical wetland food web from South China

This study investigated the quantitative sources of persistent organic pollutants (POPs), their biomagnification factors, and their effect on POP biomagnification in a typical waterbird (common kingfisher, Alcedo atthis) food web in South China. The median concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in kingfishers were 32,500 ng/g lw and 130 ng/g lw, respectively. The congener profiles of PBDEs and PCBs showed significant temporal changes because of the restriction time points and biomagnification potential of different contaminants. The concentrations of most bioaccumulative POPs, such as CBs 138 and 180 and BDEs 153 and 154, decreased at lower rates than those of other POPs. Pelagic fish (metzia lineata) and benthic fish (common carp) were the primary prey of kingfishers, as indicated by quantitative fatty acid signature analysis (QFASA) results. Pelagic and benthic prey species were the primary sources of low and high hydrophobic contaminants for kingfishers, respectively. Biomagnification factors (BMFs) and trophic magnification factors (TMFs) had parabolic relationships with log KOW, with peak values of approximately 7. Significant negative correlations were found between the whole-body elimination rates of POPs in waterbirds and the log-transformed TMFs and BMFs, indicating that the strong metabolism of waterbirds could potentially affect POP biomagnification.

Characterization and distribution of polybrominated diphenyl ethers in shellfish in Shenzhen coastal waters and assessment of human health risks

This study aims to investigate the profiles of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in shellfish obtained from Shenzhen coastal waters and assess the potential health risks. We analyzed 74 shellfish samples from eight different species for PBDEs (BDE-28, −47, −99, −100, −153, −154, −183, −209). The concentrations of total PBDEs in different shellfish species ranged from 2.02 to 360.17 pg g−1 wet weight, with the highest levels found in Pectinidae, Babylonia areolate, Ostreidae, Perna viridis, Haliotis diversicolor, Corbiculidae, Pinctada margaritifera, and Veneridae in descending order. Among the PBDE congeners analyzed, BDE-47 was the most abundant, followed by BDE-154 and BDE-153. Furthermore, the estimated daily intake of PBDEs through shellfish consumption for Shenzhen residents were between 0.11 and 0.19 ng kg−1(bw) day−1. To our knowledge, this is the first study to systematically investigate the profiles of PBDEs in eight different shellfish species from Shenzhen's coastal waters and evaluate the potential human health risks associated with shellfish consumption.

First insight into accumulation of characteristics and tissue distribution of PCBs, PBDEs, and other BFRs in the living Indonesian coelacanth (Latimeria menadoensis).

Persistent organic pollutants, including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and other brominated flame retardants, were detected in the liver, muscle, and ovary tissues of the Indonesian coelacanth (Latimeria menadoensis) incidentally caught around Gangga Island, North Sulawesi Province, Indonesia, on November 5, 2014. Concentrations of total PCBs (209 congeners, 300-2600ngg-1 lipid weight) in all tissues showed higher than those of PBDEs (41 congeners, 3.9-6.3ngg-1 lw) and BTBPE (1.1-3.6ngg-1 lw). The tissue-specific PCB and PBDE profiles were likely due to differences in the lipid composition. Toxic equivalent (TEQ) values of dioxin-like PCBs in coelacanth tissues were lower than the benchmark values for early-life fish. However, compared with the data reported for deep-sea fishes in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, the relatively high concentrations of PCBs detected in this study raise concerns regarding Indonesian coelacanth conservation and habitat conditions.

Occurrence and levels of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in deep-sea sharks from Suruga Bay, Japan

Few studies have investigated the prevalence of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in deep-sea sharks. In this study, the levels and profiles of PBDEs were determined in liver samples of eight different species of deep-sea sharks collected in Suruga Bay, Japan. Widespread contamination of PBDEs in the deep-sea environment was reconfirmed in this study as these persistent organic pollutants (POPs) were detected in all specimens analyzed. Mean ΣPBDE levels in the deep-sea sharks ranged from 7 to 517 ng/g of lipid weight. The distribution patterns of BDE homologues were similar in all species where tetra-BDEs provided the dominant contribution to total PBDEs (46%). PBDEs levels were similar to, or higher than, those seen in other deep-sea sharks from different regions. The levels of PBDEs were likely to reflect their feeding preferences as higher PBDE levels were seen in species with higher trophic positions.

First report on hydroxylated and methoxylated polybrominated diphenyl ethers in terrestrial environment from the Arctic and Antarctica

Terrestrial plants, which account for the world’s largest biomass and constitute the basis of most food webs, take up, transform, and accumulate organic chemical contaminants from the ambient environment. In this study, we determined the concentrations and congener profiles of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and hydroxylated and methoxylated polybrominated diphenyl ethers (OH-PBDEs and MeO-PBDEs) in surface soil and vegetation samples collected from the Arctic (Svalbard) and Antarctica (King George Island) during the Chinese Scientific Research Expeditions. The concentrations of total PBDEs (∑PBDEs) in soil and vegetation samples collected from the Arctic (5.6–270 pg/g dry weight) were higher than those from Antarctica (2.3–33 pg/g dw), whereas the concentrations of ∑MeO-PBDEs and ∑OH-PBDEs were lower in Arctic terrestrial samples (n.d.–0.75 and 0.0008–1.1 ng/g dw, respectively) than in samples from Antarctica (0.007–4.0 and 0.034–25 ng/g dw, respectively). Long-range atmospheric transport and human activities were potential sources of PBDEs in polar regions, whereas the dominance of ortho-substituted MeO-PBDE and OH-PBDE congeners in terrestrial matrices indicated the importance of natural sources. To the best of our knowledge, this study represents the first report on the levels and behaviors of MeO-PBDEs and OH-PBDEs in terrestrial environment of polar regions.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers in indoor dusts from industrial factories, offices, and houses in northern Vietnam: Contamination characteristics and human exposure.

Information about the occurrence of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in indoor dusts from various industrial sectors in Southeast Asia is still scarce. In this study, concentrations and congener-specific profiles of PBDEs were determined in indoor dusts from industrial factories, offices, and houses in northern Vietnam. Levels of Σ8PBDEs were higher in the office dusts (median 270; range 230-300ng/g) and factory dusts (170; 89-510ng/g) than in the house dusts (61; 25-140ng/g). BDE-209 was the most dominant congener, accounting for 27-98% (average 62%) of Σ8PBDEs, suggesting the abundance of products treated with deca-BDE mixtures. Residential, commercial, and industrial activities in the studied locations of this survey were not significant sources of PBDEs as compared to those of informal waste processing activities in Vietnam. Relatively low PBDE concentrations detected in our dust samples partially reflect effectiveness of the global PBDE phase-out. Human exposure and health risk associated with dust-bound PBDEs were estimated, indicating acceptable levels of risk (i.e., neurobehavioral effects). The contributions of workplace dusts in total daily intake doses of PBDEs via dust ingestion were more important for local workers in informal recycling areas than factory workers and general population, raising the need of appropriate labor protection measures.

Determination of brominated flame retardants including polybrominated diphenyl ethers, pentabromoethylbenzene, hexabromobiphenyl, and decabromodiphenyl ethane in sediment samples: Validation of a rapid and efficient clean-up method and application to a sediment core from Lake Biwa, Japan

The development of rapid and efficient analytical method for the determination of legacy and current-use brominated flame retardants (BFRs) has been performed due to environmental concern related to these pollutants. In the present study, we used an automated clean-up device equipped with pre-packed micro-column sets (containing sulfuric acid impregnated silica gel and silver-modified alumina) to develop an effective purification method for polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), pentabromoethylbenzene, hexabromobiphenyl, and decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) in sediment extracts. Matrix-spiked sediments (n = 6) and the Standard Reference Material® 1944 samples (n = 6) were tested. Our method showed acceptable accuracy, repeatability, and sensitivity for almost all the target compounds with reduced processing time, labor requirement, and solvent amounts as compared to conventional clean-up method (e.g., sulfuric acid treatment and self-packed chromatographic columns). The validated method was applied to sediment core samples (n = 16) collected in 2019 from Lake Biwa, the largest lake in Japan. PBDEs were detected in sediment samples of 0–13 cm depth (dated between 1990 and 2019) at relatively low concentrations (median 5.7; range 2.6–9.4 ng/g dry weight). PBDE profiles were dominated by BDE-209, which accounted for 91 ± 10% of total PBDEs. Among other BFRs, only DBDPE was found in sediment layers of 0–9 cm depth (deposited between 2005 and 2019). DBDPE concentrations ranged from 0.43 to 1.6 (median 0.71) ng/g and showed increasing trend toward shallower depths.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in raw milk from different animal species and in infant formula. Occurrence and risk assessment

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are widespread, persistent in the environment, and classified as global pollutants. Their presence has been confirmed in various types of food which adversely affect human health when consumed in sufficient amounts. Although milk has advantageous nutritional qualities and there are health benefits associated with its consumption, it could also contain toxic PBDEs. The aim of the study was the determination of the concentrations of ten congeners (BDE -28, −47, −49, −99, −100, −138, −153, −154, −183, and 209) in cow’s, sheep’s, and goat’s milk obtained from Polish farms and their determination in infant formula. A total of 103 samples of raw milk and infant formula were tested using an accredited high-resolution gas chromatography–high-resolution mass spectrometry method. PBDEs were detected in all analyzed samples, the highest concentration being found in sheep’s milk (11.9 ng g−1 fat), and cow’s milk containing the least contamination. BDE-209 makes the predominant contribution to the sum of the ten congeners, constituting at least 38%. The profiles of PBDEs were dependent on the milk type and the differences between its varieties are discussed. The highest median concentration of the sum of ten PBDEs (0.473 ng g−1 fat) was determined in infant formula, which was identified as an important source of infants’ exposure (5.48 ng kg−1 b.w. day−1 calculated based on P95 concentration). Milk is a source of PBDE in the diet; however, considered in isolation its consumption does not pose a risk to either adults’ or children’s health.

Association between fetal growth restriction and maternal exposure to polybrominated diphenyl ethers.

Humans are exposed to polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) via ingestion of food, dust inhalation, and dermal absorption. Exposure to PBDEs via the placenta and breast milk is a special and important pathway in infants. This nested case-control study aimed to investigate the levels of PBDEs in maternal serum and colostrum, and to assess the association between the occurrence of fetal growth restriction (FGR) and prenatal exposure to PBDEs. We recruited 293 mother-newborn pairs, including 98 FGR cases and 195 healthy controls in Wenzhou, China. Maternal serum and colostrum samples were collected during pregnancy and after delivery, respectively, and the levels of PBDEs were measured by gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The total levels of PBDEs in maternal serum and colostrum were found to be in equilibrium, but congener profiles of PBDEs in these matrices were different. Increased BDE-207, BDE-209, ∑BDE196-209 and ∑PBDEs levels in maternal serum and BDE-99, ∑BDE17-154 and ∑PBDEs levels in colostrum were correlated with decreased birth weight Z score. Increased concentrations of higher brominated BDEs in maternal serum (odds ratio (OR)=1.010, 95%CI=1.003-1.018) and low-to moderately brominated BDEs in colostrum (OR=1.004, 95%CI=1.000-1.009) were associated with increased risk of FGR, which showed an exposure-response relationship. In addition, infants with FGR were more exposed to PBDEs in colostrum after birth than healthy infants. Longitudinal birth cohort studies are needed to determine the prolonged effect of PBDEs exposure on the growth of FGR infants in the future.

Retention of polybrominated diphenyl ethers and hydroxylated metabolites in paired human serum and milk in relation to CYP2B6 genotype

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and their hydroxylated metabolites (OH-BDEs) are endocrine disrupting compounds prevalent in human serum and breast milk. Retention of PBDEs and OH-BDEs in humans may be affected by differences in PBDE metabolism due to variants in cytochrome P450 2B6 (CYP2B6). The objectives of this study are to assess the partitioning profiles of PBDEs and OH-BDEs in forty-eight paired human serum and milk samples, and to evaluate the relationship between variants in CYP2B6 genotype and PBDE and OH-BDE accumulation in humans. Results show that the geometric mean (GM) concentrations of PBDEs are similar in serum (GM = 43.4 ng/g lipid) and milk samples (GM = 52.9 ng/g lipid), while OH-BDEs are retained primarily in serum (GM = 2.31 ng/g lipid), compared to milk (GM = 0.045 ng/g lipid). Participants with CYP2B6*6 genotype had a greater relative retention of PBDEs in serum and milk, and significant relationships (p < 0.05) were also observed for PBDE-47, 5-OH-BDE-47 and 6-OH-BDE-47 concentrations relative to CYP2B6*5 and CYP2B6*6 genotypes. These results are the first to show that CYP2B6 genotype is significantly related to the relative retention of PBDEs in humans, which may have direct implications for variability in the susceptibility of individuals to the potential adverse effects of these contaminants.

Occurrence and congener profiles of polybrominated diphenyl ethers in green mussels (Perna viridis) collected from northern South China Sea and the associated potential health risk

Polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) contamination has become a major concern over the effects on human health. In the present study, we collected widely consumed green mussels (Perna viridis) samples from the northern South China Sea (NSCS) to investigate the occurrence, spatial distribution, congener profiles as well as potential risk of 18 PBDEs. All the target PBDEs were detected in green mussel samples, indicating their ubiquitous distribution. The concentrations of the total 18 PBDES (ΣPBDEs) in all samples varied from 6.96 to 55.6 ng/g lipid weight (lw), with BDE-47 and BDE-209 being the predominant PBDE congeners. Overall, the ΣPBDEs pollution in green mussels from NSCS was at a moderate to high level in comparison with the PBDEs pollution worldwide. The dietary exposure of the local population in South China to PBDEs via consuming green mussels was estimated to be 0.30–0.80 ng/kg body weight (bw)/day. Evaluation of the exposure risk for BDE-47, 99, 153 and 209 indicated that health risks due to green mussel consumption are substantially lower than the U.S. EPA minimum concern level.

Effects of temperature on the emission of particulate matter, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and polybrominated diphenyl ethers from the thermal treatment of printed wiring boards.

The effects of temperature on the emission of pollutants during the thermal treatment of electronic waste have rarely been investigated. The emission of particulate matter (PM), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) from the thermal treatment of printed wiring boards was investigated over a temperature range of 320-600 °C. The emission factors (EFs) were determined to be within 1.6-7.6 g/kg, 2.23-11.9 μg/g, and 0.9-5.5 μg/g, respectively. High temperatures increased the formation of PAHs and CO, but decreased the emission of PBDEs, PM, and organic carbon. A temperature of 480 °C was determined to be optimal. Low-molecular-weight components were the dominant PAH species. The compositional profiles of PBDEs were clearly observed to vary with the temperature. Small particles (< 2.1 μm) that were more affected by temperature were dominant in PM, particle-bound PAHs, and PBDEs at all temperatures. High temperature increased the EFs of gaseous PAHs but had no remarkable effect on those of particulate PAHs. The freshly emitted PAHs primarily existed in the particulate phase at low temperatures, while the gaseous phase PAHs became prevailing at ≥ 520 °C. The particulate PBDEs were more susceptible to temperature and overwhelmingly dominant over the entire temperature range considered.

Levels of polybrominated diphenyl ethers and hexabromocyclododecane in treatment plant sludge: Implications on sludge management

Past usage of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDD) in commercial products resulted in their continuous emission from sources. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) are the main sinks resulting from their industrial and domestic usage as well as atmospheric deposition. This preliminary study examined levels of PBDEs and HBCDD in urban and industrial WWTP sludge samples for the first time from Turkey. PBDE concentrations (sum of 26 congeners) of eight samples collected from four WWTPs were between 300 and 655 ng g−1 dw and 67–2.5*107 ng g−1 dw, and HBCDD concentrations (sum of α-, β-, and γ- diastereoisomers) ranged 75–616 ng g−1 dw and 13–416 ng g−1 dw, for urban and industrial WWTP samples, respectively. Although PBDEs have never been produced in Turkey, the highest PBDE concentration in sewage sludge worldwide was identified in one of the WWTPs. PBDE and HBCDD levels in other sludge samples were comparable to those reported in the literature. Application of a chemical mass balance model (CMB) suggested: (i) the main source of PBDEs as deca-BDE mixture; (ii) influence of a background air PBDE profile for one of the industrial WWTPs, having low contamination; (iii) indoor dust PBDE contamination as another source for urban WWTPs. The preliminary results for BFR levels in Turkey were discussed in terms of sludge disposal methods used worldwide, and the need for regulatory limits for BFRs in sludge management.

Mirror image between gas–particle partitioning and soil–moss distribution of polybrominated diphenyl ethers in the polar regions

The concentrations and congener-specific profiles of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were investigated in the atmosphere, soil and moss samples were collected from Ny–Ålesund, Svalbard in the Arctic and King Georgia Island (KGI), Fildes Peninsula in Antarctica, respectively. The congener profiles of PBDEs were symmetrical between gas and moss, as well as between particles and soil at Ny–Ålesund and KGI, respectively, similar to a “mirror image”. The proportions of highly brominated congeners (for example, BDE–99, –153 and –183) in the particle phase and soil were higher than those in the gas phase and moss, while tri– and tetra–BDEs possessed higher proportions in the gas phase and moss at both sites. The slopes of log–log linear correlations between the gas–particle partition coefficient (Kp) and sub–cooled liquid vapor pressures (p°L) of PBDEs were observed at both sites compared with the values in the urban areas. Moreover, the slopes of logKp vs. logp°L (−0.51 at Ny–Ålesund and − 0.29 at KGI) were notably close to the slopes of log–log linear correlations between the dimensionless soil–moss quotient (QSM) and p°L (−0.42 at Ny–Ålesund and −0.22 at KGI). Significant correlations between particle fraction (φparticle) and soil fraction (φsoil) at both sites indicated that the gas–particle partitioning of PBDEs is directly related to their distribution in moss and soil.

PCB and PBDE contamination in Tursiops truncatus and Stenella frontalis, two data-deficient threatened dolphin species from the Brazilian coast

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) levels were assessed in the liver and muscle of two data-deficient threatened dolphin species, the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus, n = 4) and the Atlantic spotted dolphin (Stenella frontalis, n = 6), sampled off the Southeastern Brazilian coast. PCB concentrations were greater in liver compared to muscle, with males presenting higher concentrations than females. The three main detected PCB congeners were PCBs 138, 153 and 180. A predominance of hexachlorinated congeners was observed, followed by hepta- and penta-PCBs. For both species, Cl 3 and Cl 4 levels were higher in muscle compared to liver, while Cl 5 to Cl 8 and ∑PCBs were higher in liver. PBDE concentrations were significantly higher in Atlantic spotted dolphin muscle and liver compared to bottlenose dolphins. Similarly to PCBs, the highest PBDE concentrations were observed in males. The presence of PBDE congeners BDE-47, -100 and -99 in the muscle and liver of both species suggests the existence of a pollution source in Brazil by a penta-BDE mixture, as PBDEs have never been produced in Brazil. Interspecific PCB and PBDE profiles were very similar, which may be related to the similar characteristics of the analyzed species, mainly geographic distribution and life and feeding habits. This study furthers knowledge on environmental PCB and PBDE contamination, assisting in the establishment of dolphin population conservation strategies. In addition, this study calls into question the current threshold values established for PCBs and PBDEs, and demonstrates the lack of information and knowledge in this regard for cetaceans.

Seasonal variation of atmospheric organochlorine pesticides and polybrominated diphenyl ethers in Parangipettai, Tamil Nadu, India: Implication for atmospheric transport

Past studies have reported several persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in different environmental matrices from a tropical coastal site, Parangipettai (PI), located along the bank of the Vellar River in Tamil Nadu, south India. Hence to fill the data gap after the strict ban on several POPs, high volume air sampling was conducted in PI to study the variability of atmospheric organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) during summer, pre-monsoon and monsoon seasons. Emission source regions were tracked by using five days back trajectory analysis. Range of air concentrations in pg/m3 were: dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), 13 - 1976; hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH), 260–1135, hexachlorocyclobenzene (HCB), 52–135, chlordanes, 36–135 and endosulfans, 66–1013. Six PBDE congeners ranged between 25 and 155 pg/m3 with the highest concentration in summer followed by pre-monsoon and monsoon. Atmospheric DDT and HCH in PI have drastically reduced from the past report thereby showing the strict ban on agricultural use of these compounds. During monsoon, fresh source of o,p′‐DDT, trans‐chlordane and α‐endosulfan was evident. Higher level of endosulphan sulfate in PI seems to be likely affected by the air mass, originating from a neighbouring state Kerela, where endosulfan has been extensively used for cashew plantations. Similarly in summer, the day recorded with the highest level of PBDEs, the sample was concurrently impacted by air parcel comprised of two major clusters, 1 (25%) and 2 (49%) that traversed through the metropolitan cities like Bangalore and Chennai. Dominance of BDE-99 over BDE-47 in PI is in line with the PBDE profile reported from Chennai city during similar time frame. Average concentration of tetra and penta BDE congeners in summer samples were nearly 2–3 folds higher than pre-monsoon or monsoon. Given the fact that strong localised sources for heavier BDE congeners are lacking in PI, regional atmospheric transport from the strong emission source regions in Chennai might have impacted PBDE concentration in PI.

Diversity and Dynamics of Microbial Community Structure in Different Mangrove, Marine and Freshwater Sediments During Anaerobic Debromination of PBDEs.

Little is known about the diversity and succession of indigenous microbial community during debromination of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). This study examined the diversity and dynamics of microbial community structure in eight saline (mangrove and marine) and freshwater sediment microcosms exhibiting different debrominating capabilities for hexa-BDE 153, a common congener in sediments, using terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) and clone library analyses. The results showed that microbial community structure greatly differed between the saline and freshwater microcosms, likely leading to distinct variations in their debrominating capabilities and pathways. Higher relative abundances of Chloroflexi and Deltaproteobacteria succeed by Alphaproteobacteria and Betaproteobacteria were detected in the two mangrove microcosms with the fastest debrominating capabilities mainly via para pathway, respectively; the dominance of Alphaproteobacteria resulted in less accumulation of tetra-BDEs and more complete debromination of lower brominated congeners (from di- to tetra-BDEs). Meanwhile, the shifts in both microbial community structure and PBDE profiles were relatively small in the less efficient freshwater microcosms, with relatively more ortho and meta brominated products of BDE-153 resulted. Coincidently, one of the freshwater microcosms showed sudden increases of Chloroflexi and Deltaproteobacteria by the end of incubation, which synchronized with the increase in the removal rate of BDE-153. The significant relationship between microbial community structure and PBDEs was confirmed by redundancy analysis (18.7% of total variance explained, P = 0.002). However, the relative abundance of the well-known dechlorinator Dehalococcoides showed no clear correlation with the debrominating capability across different microcosms. These findings shed light in the significance of microbial community network in different saline environments on enhancement of PBDE intrinsic debromination.

Selected organohalogenated flame retardants in Egyptian indoor and outdoor environments: Levels, sources and implications for human exposure

There is scant information on the presence of the polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and other alternative flame-retardants (NFRs) in Africa. Hence, to investigate their levels, sources, and human exposure scenarios, elevated fine dust (EFD) samples from apartments (n = 12), working places (n = 9) and cars (n = 12), floor dust (FD) samples (n = 5) and outdoor dust samples (n = 21) were collected from Alexandria, Egypt, during 2014. Gaseous concentrations were estimated using low density polyethylene sheets (n = 33 and 21 for indoor and outdoor sites, respectively). Indoor gaseous and dust PBDE (7.0–300 pg/m3; 4.0–770 ng/g), and NFR (0.40–48 pg/m3; 0.50–8.5 ng/g) concentrations were significantly higher (p = 0.004–0.02) than outdoor concentrations (PBDEs: 3.0–41 pg/m3, 1.5–195 ng/g; NFRs: 0.20–13 pg/m3, 0.50–4.0 ng/g). Median PBDE concentration in cars (210 ng/g) was higher than in apartments and working places (130 ng/g respectively). PBDE concentrations in FD were 7.0–14-folds lower than EFD concentrations. Outdoor PBDE concentrations were significantly higher (p < 0.01) at residential–industrial places with older buildings. All samples were dominated by BDE-47 and 99. HBB, BTBPE and DDC-CO were the most abundant NFRs in EFD samples. Profiles of PBDE and NFR in FD closely matched those of outdoor dust, indicating a possible carryover from the outdoor environment. Although factors such as number of electronics, construction year and floor type significantly correlated with the majority of PBDE congeners and some NFRs in apartments and working places, sources were not clearly identified for NFRs. Significant log-linear relationships were obtained between theoretical and calculated dust-air partitioning coefficients for all samples indicating an equilibrium state between dust and vapor. Low possibility of occurrence of adverse health effects was concluded, with the inhalation pathway (for adults) and dust ingestion (for children) acting as the most important exposure routes.
