Supportive care needs and anxious-depressive symptoms in cancer patients: An interaction effect between emotional competence and the COVID-19 pandemic?

The main objective was to assess the link between emotional competence (EC) and adjustment outcomes such as supportive care needs (SCN) and anxious-depressive symptoms in cancer patients starting chemotherapy. The second objective was to assess the interaction effect between EC and the COVID-19 pandemic (i.e. patients included before or during the pandemic) on these outcomes. At the beginning of care, 255 patients with digestive or hematological cancer, recruited before the pandemic began (n = 156, 61.2%) or during the pandemic (n = 99, 38.8%), completed the Short Profile of Emotional Competence, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, and the Supportive Care Needs Survey Short Form. Partial correlations and multiple regressions were used. Intrapersonal EC showed negative significant correlations with psychological unmet SCN (r = -.32, p < .001), anxiety (r = -.37, p < .001), and depression (r = -.46, p < .001). Interpersonal EC showed only significant interaction effects (p < .05): it was only associated with fewer unmet physical and daily SCN (p < .002) and fewer depressive symptoms (p < .004) during pandemic. Results show significant associations between intrapersonal EC and better adjustment of cancer patients from the early stage of care. Interpersonal EC seems to be a significant resource to deal with illness only in difficult contexts such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

Association between emotional competence and risk of unmet supportive care needs in caregivers of cancer patients at the beginning of care.

This cross-sectional study explored the associations between intrapersonal and interpersonal emotional competence (EC) and the unmet supportive care needs (SCN), anxiety, and depression of informal caregivers at the beginning of gastrointestinal or haematological cancer care, i.e. during chemotherapy and within 6months after diagnosis. The participants completed a self-reported questionnaire, comprising the Short Profile of Emotional Competence (S-PEC), the SCN survey for partners and caregivers (SCNS-P&C), and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Multivariate logistic regression models were performed to explore the influence of EC on unmet SCN and the presence of moderate/severe anxiety or depression. Most of the 203 caregivers were women (n = 141, 69.80%) and the partners of patients (n = 148, 73.27%) suffering from gastrointestinal (n = 112, 55.17%) and haematological (n = 91, 44.83%) cancer. Only intrapersonal EC showed a significant influence out of all the dimensions of unmet SCN related to healthcare services and information (odds ratio (OR) = 0.35 [95%CI 0.19; 0.65]), emotional and psychological needs (OR = 0.43 [95%CI 0.25; 0.74]), work and social security (OR = 0.57 [95%CI 0.37; 0.88]), and communication and family support (OR = 0.61 [95%CI 0.39; 0.95]). A one-unit increase in the intrapersonal EC score significantly reduced the probability of anxiety (OR = 0.42, [95%CI 0.26; 0.68]) and depression (OR = 0.34, [95%CI 0.21; 0.55]). Intrapersonal EC of caregivers is crucial to reduce the risk of unmet SCN, anxiety, and depression from the beginning of care. Identifying caregivers with lower intrapersonal EC may be necessary to increase vigilance from healthcare professionals and psychologists.

Penerapan psikodrama untuk meningkatkan kompetensi emosi pada remaja dengan orang tua bercerai

Adolescents who experience the impact of divorce experience unstable emotional conditions, sadness, disappointment, and low emotional competence. Emotional competence is the condition of an individual who is able to recognize, express, understand, regulate and use the emotions they feel. There are many ways to improve the emotional competence of teenagers with divorced parents, one of which is using the psychodrama method. Psychodrama is a way of expressing what is felt about the pressure or stress that is being experienced or method often called catharsis. The research aims to determine the use of intervention in the form of psychodrama in an effort to increase emotional competence in adolescents with divorced parents. This research uses an experimental approach with a pretest-posttest control group design. The instrument used was the Profile of Emotional Competence (PEC). There were 10 research subjects determined using a purposive sampling method who were then divided into experimental and control groups according to low to medium PEC scores. The results of data analysis using the Wilcoxon test showed that there was a significant difference in the experimental group (p= 0,043) and there was no significant difference in the control group (p= 0,069). Based on these results, it indicates that psychodrama has a significant influence in efforts to increase emotional competence in adolescents with divorced parents.

Socio-emotional Skills in consumers of psychoactive substances

Nowadays people increasingly deal with stress in their day-to-day and the way they adapt involves intrapersonal (emotional relationship), interpersonal and environmental factors, when this adaptation develops in a negative way it can lead to the consumption of psychoactive substances, hence the relevance of the study's theme. The objective of this investigation is to know the profile of emotional competence in consumers of psychoactive substances, making use of an anonymous and confidential questionnaire applied to consumers of psychoactive substances, divided in two parts: the first part, considering variables of sociodemographic and professional character and one second part consisting of the "Veiga Scale of Emotional Competence" (EVCE) (Veiga-Branco, 2005, 2011, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018). The sample is made up of 78 consumers of psychotic substances, of whom 48 were female, most of the respondents are over 30 years old, are single, have no children, have higher education, live with the family and have a social life. The results obtained reveal that there is no influence of sociodemographic variables nor on the characteristics of substance use on the profile of emotional competence or on the dimensions of the same of consumers of psychoactive substances.

Effects of a 6-Week Agility Training Program on Emotional Intelligence and Attention Levels in Adolescent Tennis Players

Tennis can be a mentally challenging sport, and emotional intelligence (EI) contributes significantly to an athlete’s psychological well-being. Thus, this study investigated the effects of 6 weeks of a combined Change of Direction (CoD) and reactive agility (RA) intervention program on emotional intelligence (EI) in pubertal tennis players. A total of 28 youth tennis players, aged 11 to 14 years, were randomly assigned to an experimental group (EXP-G, n = 15, 13 boys [age = 13.34 ± 0.98 years, maturity offset (MO) = −0.19 ± 0.96], and 2 girls [age = 12.77 ± 0.23 years, MO = 0.78 ± 0.04]) or a control group (CON-G, n = 13, 8 boys [age = 13.37 ± 0.75 years, MO = 0.00 ± 0.71], and 5 girls [age = 13.50 ± 0.92 years, MO = 1.41 ± 1.07]). The EXP-G performed combined CoD and RA training across the 6-week intervention period. The CON-G continued with the normal five 20 min regular tennis-specific training sessions per week, including technical and tactical drills and a small-sided games format. The overall training volume was similar between groups. Pre- and post-training, Profile of Emotional Competence (PEC, [EC TOTAL: global score of emotional competence level; EC INTRA: score of intra-personal emotional competence; EC INTER: score of inter-personal emotional competence]) and d2 attention tests were assessed. The present study employed an Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) with pre-test covariance to assess between-group differences (EXP-G vs. CON-G) at the post-test phase, utilizing baseline values as covariates. Noteworthy outcomes were observed, indicating statistically significant and substantial between-group disparities at post-test for various measures. Specifically, these differences were evident in the attention domain (effect size, d = 1.08 [Large], p = 0.001), the EC TOTAL test (effect size, d = 0.70 [Medium], p = 0.017), the EC INTA (effect size, d = 1.35 [Large], p = 0.001), and the EC INTER (effect size, d = 0.83 [Large], p = 0.009) tests. Due to the importance of agility training for overall competitive performance in tennis, our results suggest that young players should perform such training programs as part of conditioning training if the goal is to improve emotional intelligence and mental well-being.

ObjectivesDespite being less recognized as a specific subdomain of Psychology in French-speaking countries, forensic psychologists do face the same challenges as their Anglo-Saxon counterparts. Among these, the literature identifies the quality of life in the workplace, which can be divided into Compassion Satisfaction, and Compassion Fatigue, the latter being composed of Burn-out and Secondary Traumatic Stress. Previous research has acknowledged the role of emotional competence, especially the management of emotions, as a central factor of healthcare professionals’ relationship with their work assignments. However, Pirelli and collaborators recently highlighted the lack of empirical research among forensic psychologists. As an answer to their call, this study investigates the association and predictive factors of emotional competence, difficulties in emotional management, and the quality of professional life. Materials and methodsAn online survey (Lime Survey) was used to collect data regarding socio-demographic variables such as age, gender, years of experience, and training. The following self-questionnaires were then given to the subjects: Profile of Emotional Competence, Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale, and Professional Quality of Life. Descriptive, correlational, and regressive analyses were undertaken to, respectively: (1) describe our sample and compare it to available norms (Student's t), (2) associate (Bravais-Pearson r) the mean scores of the three scales, and (3) evaluate the prediction (simple and multiple linear regression) of emotional competence and emotional dysfunction on the quality of professional life. These predictions were then reversed. Both regression analyses used the backward method. ResultsThe sample was composed of 44 French-speaking forensic psychologists (79.50% female), median age 34.20 (SD=7.96). They were mainly trained in clinical psychology (84.10%), followed by forensic psychology (18.20%). The majority of the sample worked as carceral psychologists (59.10%), and their main missions were support and guidance (78.70%), followed by recidivism risk assessment (52.30%) and crisis management (50.00 %). Descriptive results. The participants exhibited significantly higher emotional dysfunction scores (total score, p ≤ .001; Lack of Emotional Clarity, p=.10; Impulse Control Difficulties,p ≤ .001; Difficulties Engaging in Goal-Directed Behavior,p ≤ .001) when compared to available norms. Regarding their perceived quality of life, all scores were either significantly lower or higher based on the norms used. A similar analysis was not possible for emotional competence as available norms were gender-specific, and the sample gender distribution was clearly unbalanced. Associations and regression relations were confirmed between emotional competence, emotional dysfunction, and the quality of professional life, especially between Compassion Satisfaction and emotional competence (r=.33–.56) on the one hand and between Burn-out and emotional dysfunction on the other hand (r=.41–.65). Unexpectedly, Secondary Traumatic Stress was only predicted by emotional dysfunction (Impulse Control Difficulties, β=.39, t=2.71, R2=.13, p=.010). ConclusionsTaken as a whole, the results indicate that (a) Compassion Satisfaction and Burn-out are key elements to assess in the workplace, confirming previous studies among other health professionals, and (b) although correlated to specific emotional dysfunction such as Difficulties Engaging in Goal-Directed Behaviors and Impulse Control Difficulties, none of these factors predict nor is predicted by Secondary Traumatic Stress.

Relationship of depression with empathy, emotional intelligence, and symptoms of a weakened immune system.

Previous studies have used different individual scales to examine the relationship of depression with emotional intelligence, empathy, and immune-based diseases. In this study, we used a combination of psychometric scales to examine the relationships of depression with emotional intelligence (intrapersonal and interpersonal), empathy (affective and cognitive), and symptoms of weakened immune system. This cross-sectional prospective study examined 158 volunteers (39 males and 119 females). A score of 10 or more on the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) was used to define depression. The Cognitive and Affective Empathy Test (TECA) was used to assess empathy, and the Profile of Emotional Competence (PEC) was used to assess the self-perception of intrapersonal and interpersonal competence. The symptoms of a weakened immune system (WIS) were assessed by measurements of permanent tiredness, frequent infections and colds, slow wound healing, persistent and recurrent diarrhea, recurring herpes, insomnia and difficulty sleeping, and dry eyes. The total PEC score and intrapersonal PEC score had negative correlations with depression, and the WIS score had a positive correlation with depression. The TECA score had no significant correlation with depression or the WIS score, but had positive correlations with the total PEC score, intrapersonal PEC score, and interpersonal PEC score. The total PEC score, intrapersonal PEC score, and WIS score were significantly associated with depression. The TECA score was not significantly associated with depression or the WIS score. Our findings suggest that improving intrapersonal emotional skills may improve function of the immune system and reduce the symptoms of depression. We suggest that further studies examine the effect of targeted improvement of interpersonal skills (empathy) on depression.

Justification of the author’s methodology of emotional intelligence research

Emotional intelligence is one of the new concepts in psychology, which is constantly being studied by many scientists. The article analyses the concepts of emotional intelligence, emotional competence and its structural components. The article considers various concepts of emotional intelligence of such scientists as P. Salovey, D. Mayer, D. Caruso, G. Gardner, R. Bar-On, S. Marcus, G. Dudchak, M. Mykolaychak. The article also analyses domestic concepts of emotional intelligence. As a result of the analysis of various scientific views on the concept of emotional intelligence and methods of its research, it has been made a decision to develop the author’s own psychodiagnostic test. The author has developed own test methodology for studying the emotional component, since there are no similar test methods in the national psychodiagnostics.&#x0D; The author's methodology includes five main and two additional scales. The main scales of the methodology include the following properties of emotional intelligence: 1. managing one’s own emotions; 2. managing the emotions of others; 3. understanding one’s own emotions; 4. understanding the emotions of others; 5. empathy. Additional scales of the methodology are the lying scale and the general level of emotional intelligence (calculated by adding the results of the 5 main scales).&#x0D; Subsequently, various test methods were considered to study emotional intelligence and its components. The following tests were chosen for correlation: Toronto Alexithymia Scale, N. Hall’s Self-Esteem Emotional Intelligence Inventory, and the Profile of Emotional Competence (PEC).&#x0D; A correlation analysis of the own methodology with existing test methods for the study of emotional intelligence has been carried out to confirm its validity. The study proved the validity and reliability of the developed test methodology. Therefore, the developed test methodology is indeed aimed at studying the general level of emotional intelligence and studying its components such as: managing one's own emotions and the emotions of others, understanding one's own emotions and the emotions of others, empathy.

Cognitive Behavioural and Art-based program (CB-ART): a pilot study in an early parenting centre

BackgroundThe period of pregnancy and early motherhood is a substantial life change associated with psychological turbulence. During this period, some women experience symptoms of anxiety and depression of sufficient severity to warrant professional psychological assistance. Psychosocial and psychological interventions are key therapeutic approaches for women at this life stage. There is growing evidence of the value of the arts in the prevention and treatment of mental health problems. Evidence suggests that women prefer psychological interventions that provide social support and shared space for reflection.Cognitive Behavioural and Art-based intervention (CB-ART) is a novel therapy for prevention and treatment of perinatal mental health problems. The aim of this study was to implement and evaluate CB-ART for acceptability, feasibility, safety and preliminary efficacy among women admitted to a residential early parenting unit.MethodsThe pilot study used a single-centre, mixed-methods pre- and post-test design to evaluate CB-ART among women admitted to a 5-day residential early parenting service in Melbourne, Australia. Participants completed questionnaires before and after attendance at two 1-h CB-ART group sessions on day 2 and day 5 of admission during which field notes were taken. Evaluation interviews were conducted by telephone 1 week after discharge. The Short Profile of Emotional Competence and the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale were used to assess emotional insight and symptoms of depression, respectively. Feasibility, acceptability and safety were assessed using an analysis of field notes, with quantitative data collected by telephone questionnaire and qualitative data by telephone interviews.ResultsNine participants enrolled in the program; eight provided complete data. Two CB-ART groups were conducted. Before and after comparisons showed that there was an improvement in symptoms of postnatal depression and a marginal improvement in emotional insight. Thematic analysis of qualitative data indicated CB-ART was a feasible and acceptable means of assisting reflection.ConclusionThe preliminary data indicate that the CB-ART program is a feasible, acceptable and safe addition to the 5-day residential program, with potentially therapeutic benefits. A larger randomised study is required to assess the effects of the CB-ART intervention on symptom measures in this and other postnatal settings.Trial registrationAustralian and New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry, ACTRN126220000354785. On the rocky road to efficient behavior management: Can emotional competencies signal the better way?

Self-efficacy beliefs in behavior management (SEBiBM) is a key issue for teachers, while emotional competence is a major contributor to professional success and sustainability in this profession. The investigation of the multifaceted nature of these two constructs may be important in order to take a step toward understanding which emotional competence could foster specific aspects of SEBiBM. To explore this issue, elementary school teachers (N = 121, 1st-4th grades) answered the Profile of Emotional Competence, which comprises 12 scores of emotional competencies, and a four-dimensional self-efficacy scale for behavior management in the classroom. Results indicate that intrapersonal emotional competencies, as compared to interpersonal competencies, play a major role regarding self-efficacy beliefs. In particular, multiple regression analyses revealed that higher identification and understanding of personal emotions were associated with better perceived self-efficacy on two aspects of SEBiBM. In addition, using other's emotions predicted proactive involvement of the pupil's parent or caregiver. Results are discussed in terms of their contribution to research in educational sciences and in teacher education, particularly with respect to teachers' sustainability in the profession.

Association of emotion recognition ability and interpersonal emotional competence in anorexia nervosa: A study with a multimodal dynamic task.

Interpersonal difficulties are evidenced in Anorexia Nervosa (AN) and are thought to contribute to disease onset and maintenance, however, research in the framework of emotional competence is currently limited. Previous studies have often only used static images for emotion recognition tasks, and evidence is lacking on the relationships between performance-based emotional abilities and self-reported intra- and interpersonal emotional traits. This study aimed to test multimodal dynamic emotion recognition ability in AN and analyze its correlation with the psychometric scores of self- and other-related emotional competence. A total of 268 participants (128 individuals with AN and 140 healthy controls) completed the Geneva Emotion Recognition Test, the Profile of Emotional Competence, the Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test, and measures of general and eating psychopathology. Scores were compared between the two groups. Linear mixed effects models were utilized to examine the relationship between emotion recognition ability and self-reported measures and clinical variables. Individuals with AN showed significantly poorer recognition of emotions of both negative and positive valence and significantly lower scores in all emotional competence dimensions. Beside emotion type and group, linear mixed models evidenced significant effects of interpersonal comprehension on emotion recognition ability. Individuals with AN show impairment in multimodal emotion recognition and report their difficulties accordingly. Notably, among all emotional competence dimensions, interpersonal comprehension emerges as a significant correlate to emotion recognition in others, and could represent a specific area of intervention in the treatment of individuals with AN. In this study, we evidence that the ability to recognize the emotions displayed by others is related to the level of interpersonal emotional competence reported by individuals with anorexia nervosa. This result helps in understanding the social impairments in people with anorexia nervosa and could contribute to advancements in the application of the training of emotional competence in the treatment of this disorder.

Emotional Intelligence: A Systematic Comparison Between Young Athletes and Non-athletes, Gender and Age Groups

Background: Emotional intelligence (EI) and emotional competence (EC) are considered as multidimensional strategies for dealing with various complex situations. There are conflicting results regarding the effect of age, gender and sports status on EI and EC dimensions. Objectives: In the present study, we compared the EI between young athletes and non-athletes, as well as in terms of both genders and different age groups Methods: Four hundred seventy-nine young individuals (239 athletes, 240 non-athletes) aged 12 - 18 years old participated in this study. They were classified according to their age (12 - 15 years and 16 - 18 years) and gender (239 male, 240 female). All participants completed the Profile of Emotional Competence (PEC); for assessing the intra- and interpersonal EC and global EI. Results: Athletes had significantly higher values of global EI and altogether the intra- and interpersonal EC dimensions (all, P &lt; 0.001). The comparison between genre and age groups highlighted those males and younger participants showed significantly higher components for both inter- and intrapersonal EC and global EI than females and older participants respectively (0.05 &lt; P &lt; 0.001). Conclusions: Based on the result of the current study, we conclude that engagement and involvement in sports can be considered as a key factor for developing adequate EI. Psychologists and sport-scientists need to be aware about the specific-related psychological skills for both age and gender requirements, particularly EI.

Validating a Novel Emotional Intelligence Instrument for Resident Physicians

To construct and validate a scale of emotional intelligence (EI) for the medical field, n = 80 resident physicians responded to a 69-item self-report measure during the pilot phase of development of the Scale of Emotional Functioning: Medicine (SEF:MED). Based on multiple-phase item and structural analyses, a final 36-item version was created based on data from n = 321 respondent residents. Initially exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) supported the expected three-factor solution as did additional CFA from a second sample of n = 113 participants. Internal consistency reliabilities obtained from the original n = 321 residents for the three SEF:MED subscales of Interpersonal Skills (IS), Emotional Awareness (EA), and Emotional Management (EM) were 0.81, 0.82, and 0.84, respectively. Alphas for the second CFA data set were 0.89, 0.87, and 0.88 for IS, EM, and EA, respectively. In addition, the SEF:MED was validated by comparing it to related measures (i.e., the Profile of Emotional Competence (PEC) and the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey for Medical Personnel [MBI-HSS (MP)]); Correlation coefficients between the Total EI composite on the SEF:MED and the PEC global scales ranged from r = 0.64 to 0.68. Finally, correlation coefficients from the Total EI composite on the SEF:MED significantly related to the MBI-HSS (MP) Emotional Exhaustion (EE), Depersonalization (DP), and Personal Accomplishment (PA) scales (r = -0.50, -0.44, and 0.52, respectively). The SEF:MED may provide useful data to physicians and other medical professionals as they consider their own well-being and how it may affect care of their patients.

Adjustment of young women with breast cancer after chemotherapy: A mediation model of emotional competence via emotional distress.

Emotional competence (EC) is considered a substantial resource in the adjustment of cancer patients, especially via its effect on anxiety and depression symptoms. This research aimed at assessing the impact of intrapersonal EC in young women (≤45years) with breast cancer (YWBC) on their specific quality of life (i.e. subjective experience related to daily difficulties and perceived repercussions of the disease and treatments) related to chemotherapy, via anxiety and depression symptoms. Two hundred fifty YWBC from 24 French centers completed a self-reported questionnaire after diagnosis (T1) and after the chemotherapy phase (T2), comprising the Young Women Breast Cancer Inventory, the Profile of EC and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. The indirect effect of EC (T1) on subjective experience (T2) via anxiety and depression symptoms (T2) was tested using regressions and the Macro PROCESS. Emotional competence predicted fewer anxiety and depression symptoms at T1 and T2, and a better subjective experience at T2 via fewer anxiety and depression symptoms. Depression symptoms appeared to be a stronger mediator than anxiety symptoms on four dimensions (Support from close relatives, feeling of couple cohesion, body image and sexuality, management of children and everyday life), whereas anxiety symptoms appeared to be a stronger mediator on two dimensions (negative affectivity and apprehension about the future, deterioration of relationships). These results support the importance of developing psycho-affective interventions to reinforce the EC of YWBC during chemotherapy in order to facilitate the cognitive and emotional processes necessary for a better adjustment and subjective experience.

Mediating Role of Interpersonal Relationships in the Effect of Emotional Competence on Prosocial Behavior among Adolescents in Malaysia

Prosocial behavior has been regarded as a necessity for a society to function well. The present study aimed to examine the relationship between emotional competence, interpersonal relationship, and prosocial behavior among 496 school-going adolescents in Malaysia. The subjects were selected using Multistage Cluster Sampling method. Profile of Emotional Competence, Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment Scale, and Strength and Difficulties Questionnaires were used to measure emotional competence, interpersonal relationship with peers, and adolescents’ prosocial behavior respectively. The results showed significant positive relationships among emotional competence, interpersonal relationship with peers, and prosocial behavior. Further analysis revealed that adolescents who reported having higher emotional competence tend to have better interpersonal relationships with peers which in turn led to higher involvement in prosocial behavior. Emotional competence and interpersonal relationship with peers are thus established as two important factors to promote prosocial behavior among adolescents.

Emotional intelligence and drawing inferences from nonverbal cues in sports

ABSTRACT We aimed to investigate whether emotional competencies (EC) correlate with the ability to judge or predict the score in sports competitions based on thin slices of nonverbal emotional expressions. We created a German version of the Profile of Emotional Competence (PEC; Brasseur, S., Grégoire, J., Bourdu, R., & Mikolajczak, M. (2013). The Profile of Emotional Competence (PEC): Development and validation of a measure that fits dimensions of Emotional Competence theory. PLoS ONE, 8(5), e62635) and assessed its psychometric properties. In Study 1, 379 participants completed the PEC and rated whether videotaped athletes were leading or trailing. We hypothesised that the ability to distinguish between leading and trailing athletes was predicted by participants’ interpersonal, but not intrapersonal EC. In Study 2, 310 participants completed the PEC, a test assessing individual differences in emotion recognition competence (ERI; Scherer, K. R., & Scherer, U. (2011). Assessing the ability to recognize facial and vocal expressions of emotion: Construction and validation of the emotion recognition index. Journal of Nonverbal Behavior, 35(4), 305–326), and predicted the performance of darts players based on their nonverbal behaviour. In Study 1, we found small correlations between intrapersonal EC and accuracy of score estimates, but no correlations between interpersonal EC and accuracy of score estimates. Contrary to study 1, in study 2, intraindividual EC correlated neither with accuracy of performance predictions nor with ERI scores, whereas interpersonal EC correlated with ERI scores. Our results suggest that further evidence for the validity of EC measures in the context of sports is needed.

The Role of Emotional Competences in Parents' Vaccine Hesitancy.

The role of parents’ emotional competencies on vaccine hesitancy and decision making has been seldom examined. Two studies investigated the relationship between parents’ attitudes towards childhood vaccines and self-reported behavior (Study 1) and between parents’ emotional competence and attitudes towards vaccines (Study 2). In Study 1, predictors of temporal, partial, or complete vaccine refusal (having voluntarily postponed/forgone some/all vaccines) were examined in 2778 parents. In Study 2, psychological predictors of the attitude towards vaccines were examined in 593 parents, using the Profile of Emotional Competence and the valence of mental images spontaneously associated with the term “vaccine”. In Study 1, attitudes were aggregated in three independent factors (concerns about vaccine safety; diseases prevented by vaccines; and naturalistic views) that independently predicted vaccine refusal. In Study 2, a significant mediational analysis showed a positive indirect effect of intrapersonal emotional competences on attitudes towards vaccines, through mental images associated with the word “vaccine”. Parents’ intrapersonal emotional competences affected all dimensions of attitudes towards vaccines, suggesting that being able to manage, identify, and recognize one’s own emotions is central to vaccine acceptance. These findings suggest that intervention strategies, rather than stressing the pro-social benefits of vaccinating, should focus on aspects related to one’s own emotions.

The role of emotional competencies in predicting medical students’ attitudes towards communication skills training

ObjectivesThis study aims to investigate whether stress, depression and emotional competencies can help to predict medical students’ attitudes towards communication skills training (CST). Anxiety and negative attitudes towards CST have been shown to be linked. Conversely, emotional competencies (EC) were associated with positive attitudes. Exploring these psycho(patho)logical variables therefore seems to be a promising approach to better understanding, or even modifying, attitudes towards CST. Methods179 third year medical students were asked to complete the Communication Skills Attitude Scale (CSAS), the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), the Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale Self-assessment (MADRS-S) and the Profile of Emotional Competence (PEC). Results168 students completed the entire questionnaire. The stepwise regression model first revealed that, taken together, intrapersonal EC “Utilization” and interpersonal EC “Expression” account for 17% of the variance in positive attitudes. Secondly, taken together, intrapersonal EC “Utilization” and interpersonal EC “Expression” account for 16% of the variance in negative attitudes. ConclusionThe more competent a student is in “Utilization” and “Expression”, the more positive attitudes and the less negative attitudes he/she has towards CST. In addition, measuring a large set of bio-psycho-social factors might be a way of capturing more variance in attitudes towards CST. Practice implicationsIn the study of variables influencing attitudes towards CST, emotional competencies cannot be ignored. The context of the medical consultation encourages the discussion of various emotions felt by the patient. As educationalists, we should prepare the student for this by integrating the notion of EC within the CST.

Critical thinking disposition of undergraduate students in relation to emotional intelligence: Gender as a moderator

Undergraduate student, especially first-year students face challenges in the new found academic environment. Critical thinking (CT) has been found to be effective in managing negative experiences. Earlier literature found Emotional intelligence (EI) is accounted for variance in critical thinking (CT) skill irrespective of the gender. However, there is scarcity of research on the relationship between EI and CT disposition with respect to gender. The present research intended to study the effect of EI on CT disposition of students in the transition phase with gender as a moderator. 500 first-year undergraduate students from West Bengal (eastern part of India) were selected to fill up assessment tools; the Profile of Emotional Competence (Brasseur et al., 2013) and Critical Thinking Disposition Assessment (Ricketts & Rudd, 2005). Structural Equation Model (SEM) was followed using AMOS adopting maximum likelihood approach. Path analysis revealed an accepted model fit establishing EI to have significant effect on CT disposition. However, this effect was not moderated by gender. The present research might be helpful in generating awareness regarding the importance of EI and training for developing disposition of CT among college fresher's well-being and emotional health. The study has highlighted the non-significant moderating role of gender in relation to EI and CT disposition that was missing in the existing literature.
