Two awards from the American Chemical Society Division of Catalysis Science and Technology are being announced. Fabio Ribeiro , the R. Norris and Eleanor Shreve Professor of Chemical Engineering at Purdue University, is the 2023 recipient of the Exceptional Achievements in Catalysis award, in recognition of his exceptionally meritorious, impactful, and enduring scientific and leadership contributions to the broad field of catalysis science. Andrew J. “AJ” Medford , an assistant professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology, is the 2023 recipient of the Early Career in Catalysis award. This award recognizes independent contributions to the broad field of catalysis science that are of unusual merit and creativity in the early stages of a career.

Alexandra Easley is a PhD student and National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Fellow in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Texas A&M University. Her research is on polymer-based batteries using degradable polymers. Ting Ma is a postdoctoral research associate in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Texas A&M University. She obtained her PhD from Nankai University under the supervision of Prof. Jun Chen. Her research focuses upon polymer-based metal-free batteries. Jodie Lutkenhaus is a professor of Chemical Engineering at Texas A&M University. She was recognized as a World Economic Forum Young Scientist, and she is a member of the US National Academies Board on Chemical Sciences & Technology. Her lab focuses on organic batteries, structural energy storage, polyelectrolytes, and functional coatings.

ACS launches 2 new applied materials journals

On June 15, submissions opened for two new journals from the American Chemical Society: ACS Applied Engineering Materials and ACS Applied Optical Materials . The first issues of both journals are expected to be published in early 2023, and both will be guided by ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces editor in chief Kirk Schanze. ACS Applied Engineering Materials will be led by deputy editor Jessica Schiffman, a chemical engineering professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. “ ACS Applied Engineering Materials will publish high-quality manuscripts at the intersection of materials science, engineering, physics, mechanics, and chemistry,” Schiffman says. “We look forward to serving as the home for critical insights on how polymers, ceramics, metals, and composites can advance applications in health care, extreme environments, environmental remediation, catalysis, and beyond.” ACS Applied Optical Materials will be led by deputy editor Elena Galoppini, a distinguished professor of chemistry at Rutgers University–Newark. “

Akash Neal Biswas received a BS in chemical engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles and is currently a chemical engineering PhD student in the Chen group at Columbia University. His research is focused on hybrid catalytic reaction schemes for carbon dioxide conversion to value-added products, in particular the coupling of thermochemical, electrochemical, and plasma chemical processes. Zhenhua Xie is currently a research associate of the Chemistry Division at Brookhaven National Laboratory. He is also serving as an investigator in the Synchrotron Catalysis Consortium (SCC). His research interests lay in the upgrading of carbon dioxide by shale gas or renewable hydrogen into value-added chemicals, employing combined approaches of precise synthesis, kinetic analysis, <i>in situ</i> synchrotron characterization, and theoretical calculations. Jingguang Chen is the Thayer Lindsley Professor of Chemical Engineering at Columbia University, with a joint appointment at Brookhaven National Laboratory. His research interests include fundamental understanding and techno-economic analysis of various thermocatalytic and electrocatalytic processes, including carbon dioxide conversion and shale gas utilization that are relevant to the current article.

Quantum robust control theory for Hamiltonian and control field uncertainty* *Part of this work was carried out while RC was Professor of Chemical Engineering in the Center for Advanced Process Decision Making at Carnegie Mellon University.

Quantum robust control—which can employ fast leading order approximations, slower but more accurate asymptotic methods, or a combination thereof for quantification of robustness—enables control of moments of quantum observables and gates in the presence of Hamiltonian uncertainty or field noise. In this paper, we present a generalized quantum robust control theory that extends the previously described theory of quantum robust control in several important ways. We present robust control theory for control of any moment of arbitrary quantum control objectives, introducing moment-generating functions and transfer functions for quantum robust control that generalize the tools of frequency domain response theory to quantum systems, and extend the Pontryagin maximum principle for quantum control to control optimization in the presence of noise in the manipulated amplitudes or phases used to shape the control field. To provide guidelines as to the types of quantum control systems and control objectives for which asymptotic robustness analysis is important for accuracy, we introduce methods for assessing the Lie algebraic depth of quantum control systems, and illustrate through examples drawn from quantum information processing how such accurate methods for quantification of robustness to noise and uncertainty are more important for control strategies that exploit higher order quantum pathways. In addition, we define the relationship between leading order Taylor expansions and asymptotic estimates for quantum control moments in the presence of Hamiltonian uncertainty and field noise, and apply such leading order approximations to significant pathways analysis and dimensionality reduction of asymptotic quantum robust control calculations, describing numerical methods for implementation of these calculations.

Chelsea Catania is a Postdoctoral Associate in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She received a BS in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Florida. She was an NSF graduate research fellow and obtained her PhD in Materials Science from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Her research interests are in the modification of biotic-abiotic interfaces for microbial electrochemical technologies and human health. Amruta A. Karbelkar is a Postdoctoral Associate in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She obtained her MS in Chemistry from the Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai, India. She obtained her PhD in Chemistry from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. Her research focuses on developing electrochemical platforms to study microbial electron transfer and diagnostics for infectious diseases. Ariel L. Furst is an Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She obtained her BS in Chemistry from the University of Chicago and her PhD in Chemistry from the California Institute of Technology. She was then an Arnold O. Beckman Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of California, Berkeley. Her lab combines electrochemical methods with biomolecular and materials engineering to address challenges in human health and clean energy.

Cato T. Laurencin

For Cato T. Laurencin, being asked to choose between engineering and orthopedic surgery would be like having to choose which arm to cut off. These twin passions have driven his innovation in biomedical engineering, including many pioneering achievements in tissue regeneration. As a sports medicine fellow in the early 1990s, Laurencin saw a fair number of injuries to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). This major knee ligament stabilizes the joint and is a common site of injuries, particularly in athletes. He believed there had to be a better way to address those injuries, and he thought the answer could come from using biomaterials to regenerate the ligament. One night, he sketched out a preliminary drawing of how he might do just that. Tandem and Hybrid Processes for Carbon Dioxide Utilization

Sean Overa received a B.S. in chemical engineering from the University of South Carolina and is currently a chemical engineering PhD student in the Jiao group at the University of Delaware. His research is on electrochemical processes and reactor design, with a focus in two-step electrochemical conversion of CO₂. Primarily his work has focused on the production, design, and scale-up of zero-gap electrolyzers for conversion of CO₂ and CO to multi-carbon products. Tony Feric received a B.S. in chemical engineering from the University of Maryland, College Park and is currently a chemical engineering PhD student in the Park group at Columbia University. His research is focused on the design and development of novel nanoparticle organic hybrid materials (NOHMs) for CO₂ capture and electrochemical conversion to value-added products. More specifically, he is exploring their dynamics in solution, evaluating their stability under different processing conditions and understanding their unique interactions at the electrode-electrolyte interface. Ah-Hyung (Alissa) Park is the Lenfest Professor in applied climate science of Earth and environmental engineering & chemical engineering at Columbia University and is the director of the Lenfest Center for Sustainable Energy. Her research focuses on sustainable energy and materials conversion pathways with emphasis on integrated Carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS). Park has led a number of global and national discussions on CCUS including the Mission Innovation Workshop on CCUS (2017) and the National Petroleum Council CCUS Report (2019). She is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Chemical Society, and Royal Society of Chemistry. Feng Jiao received a B.S. in chemistry from Fudan University and a PhD in chemistry from University of St Andrews. After a postdoctoral training at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Dr. Jiao joined the University of Delaware as a faculty member in 2010. He is now the Robert Grasselli Development Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and serves as the director of the Center for Catalytic Science & Technology. The Jiao group focuses primarily on nanostructured materials, electrocatalysis, and carbon dioxide utilization.

Starch is the main source of human metabolic energy, and its consumption has been linked to some undesired effects for human health (e.g., metabolic syndrome). Modification methods are commonly used to obtain starch with relatively low and slowed digestibility properties. Research results in this line should provide valuable information on the links between starch physicochemical and digestibility properties. The aim of this special issue is to bring together recent advances in the impact of starch modification on digestibility properties. On behalf of the Editorial Board, I would like to thank all contributors to this special issue. Jose Alvarez-Ramirez is a full-time professor of Chemical Engineering at the Universidad Autonoma Metropolitana-Iztapalapa, Mexico City. After completing a Ph.D. on Control Theory as major and Chemical Engineering as minor in 1989, he joined the Chemical Engineering department as an associate professor in 1990. After developing research work on systems theory, Professor Alvarez-Ramirez started a research project on food science and technology in 2005, with special emphasis on starch and other polysaccharides. His research interests include the characterization of the structure/function relationships of starch in terms of food applications. In addition, the development of novel starch structures is of special research interest for nutritional applications.
