Effect of Pretreatment and Osmotic Dehydration on the Quality and Technological Properties of Dried Banana (cv. Thap Maeo)

The banana is a product to preserve banana, avoid post-harvest losses and add value. This study aims to evaluate pre-treatments of prevention enzymatic browning and osmotic dehydration, influence on drying time, proximate analysis, physicochemical characterization, color and yield in bananas cv. Thap Maeo. The biometric characterization was performed. Bananas cv. Thap Maeo was submitted to pre-processing: antioxidant (acid ascorbic (0.25%), acid citric (0.30%)), bleaching (94°C), sulphitation (Na2S2O5/0.01%), with and without osmotic dehydration in sucrose solution (65°Brix/6h) and oven dried (65°C). The obtained products were evaluated for drying curve, chemical composition, physicochemical characteristics, internal color and external color, and dried banana yield. The banana of cv. Thap Maeo presents big bunches, high number of fruits, class 12, medium fruits, moderately sweet, low acidity, pulp yield (80.47%) e 92.65 kcal). These technological properties are interesting for agribusiness. There are significant differences for prevention and enzymatic browning, osmotic dehydration and interaction for several evaluated parameters. Dried banana with osmotic dehydration dried in 32 h, dry matter (80.1%), carbohydrates (74%), TSS (65º Brix), TSS/TTA ratio (59.3), ash content (0.4%), lower Aw (0.59), moisture content (19.9%), lower texture (2.23 N), 312 Kcal. Bleaching was the best in preventing the enzymatic browning in dried banana, with lower values of crude fat (0.24%), DM (78.1%), texture (less hard, 2.43 N), low moisture content (21.9%), low pH (4.26), AW (0.66), high yield (39%). Color light, red and yellow: color external (L*(29.1), a*(10), b*(10.3)) and color internal (L*(38.9), a*(12.1), b*(19.9)). The dried banana blanched with osmotic dehydration can be an opportunity for agribusiness bananas, added value, and conservation bananas, and can serve as a basis for Local Productive Arrangements - APL’s, in the Amazon. We recommend that further studies bleaching be carried in bananas with peel, steam blanching, immersion in liquid nitrogen, freeze cycles, and loss of minerals.

Robust optimization of regional biomass supply chain system design and operation with data-driven uncertainties

To address climate change and ensure energy security, biomass energy has become a popular renewable energy alternative to traditional fossil fuels. This study focuses on the strategic planning and tactical management problem of a regional biomass supply chain system with multiple feedstock and final products. A novel SVC-based data-driven robust optimization model is developed to provide the tradeoff solutions under uncertainties. Compared with the traditional robust optimization model, it can better depict the uncertain sets, reduce data redundancy, and provide less conservative strategies for decision makers according to their risk preferences. The proposed model is validated through a case study, Meizhou city in China. The results suggested the optimal investment scale and site for biorefineries and biomass power plants at the strategic planning level, as well as the feedstock supply network, inventory management, and production arrangement at the tactic management level. The optimal robust solutions can be derived by varying the envelope level of the uncertain sets. Moreover, sensitivity analysis is performed to investigate the influences of the variations of key parameters. It is found that the produced bioethanol and electricity lack cost advantages in the current situation, even with a 30 % reduction in main cost parameters. Insufficient biomass yield may require extra capital investment to satisfy bioenergy demand but with a higher supply cost. Thus, a high and long-term subsidy is necessary to facilitate the sustainable development of biomass and the low-carbon transition of the energy sector.

The perceptions of brand coappearance in product placement: cooperation, competition or coopetition?

PurposeBrands increasingly coappear in television programs while research in product placement has primarily focused on the placements of a single brand. Building on research related to product placement and cobranding, this study aims to systematically examine the roles of product competitiveness and brand competitiveness on the effectiveness of brand coappearance on television programs.Design/methodology/approachExtensive pretesting and four experimental studies were conducted. Real stimuli that had been digitally manipulated with fictitious brands were used in Study 1 (laboratory experiment involved student samples) and Study 2 (online experiment with a national sample) to examine the short- and long-term impacts of product competitiveness on brand coappearance. Real stimuli incorporated actual brands were used in Study 3 (involved advertisers’ key demographic) and Study 4 (alterative television program with a national sample) to examine the impacts of brand competitiveness and its interaction effect with product competitiveness.FindingsThe study found that coappearing with a product of high competitiveness significantly enhanced attitudes and purchase intention toward the coappearing products both in the short and long term. Product competitiveness further interacts with brand competitiveness to influence attitudes and purchase intention toward the coappearing brands suggesting a coopetition pattern for brand coappearances. The effect of brand coappearances did not vary substantially for low or high involvement products with or without character interaction.Research limitations/implicationsThe study develops a useful framework for explaining and understanding the potential spillover effects in brand coappearances. It contributes to the existing literature on product placement and cobranding, while also paving the way for future research opportunities.Practical implicationsWhen introducing new brands, marketers are advised to consider coappearance deals with more competitive brands in highly competitive product categories. Conversely, coappearance deals with less competitive brands in less competitive product categories should be adopted to promote well-known brands. Advertisers may also consider product or brand exclusivity arrangements with broadcasters to enhance the effectiveness of the product placement.Originality/valueAlthough brand coappearance in media content is likely to continue to proliferate, little is known about the phenomenon and its effects. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this research is the first to systematically examine the perceptions toward brands coappeared in television programs.

Management and Performance Analysis of Textile Effluent Treatment Plants in Laundries of The Local Productive Arrangement of Pernambuco

Objective: The present study aimed to assess 10 laundries for compliance with Brazilian legislation Theoretical Framework: The Local Productive Arrangement (APL) of Pernambuco plays a crucial role in job creation and economic growth in the state. However, the jeans beneficiation process consumes a significant amount of water and involves the use of various chemicals, which generate effluents with high organic loads, color, and toxicity. This has caused serious environmental problems. The issue is exacerbated during prolonged drought periods and by intermittent river flows, which reduce the natural self-purification capacity of the rivers. Method: A total of 334 influent and effluent samples were collected. All the laundries studied employed physicochemical treatment processes (flocculation followed by sedimentation). Results and Discussion: The WWTPs proved to be efficient in the removal of settleable solids, demonstrating that the coagulation and flocculation processes are effective for this purpose, even in scenarios with management deficiencies. On the other hand, poor operation of the treatment plants has resulted in other parameters, such as pH, oils, and greases, being out of compliance with current legislation. The efficiency in reducing BOD was highly inconsistent, with fluctuations ranging from over 90% efficiency to negative values, indicating significant operational issues. High concentrations of organic matter can compromise oxygen levels in the receiving bodies. It is essential to intensify monitoring and improve treatment processes to mitigate negative environmental impacts.

Transhumance in Southern Italy (Fifteenth-Sixteenth Centuries): The Mobility Perspective

This paper is an overview of sheep transhumance in southern Italy from the Aragonese reform of the 1440s to the eve of a second wave of reforms in the 1540s and 1550s. The analysis focuses on the concept of mobility, which proves to be a significant indicator of increasing interdependence between the factors involved in this complex economic activity (agriculturists, pastoralists, the state, the merchants, the market and local communities), leading to change in settlement patters, production arrangements, merchant networks, social identities, economic and political thought. The role of the state institution of the sheep custom house in coordinating the seasonal movement of sheep, graziers, officials and merchants, and in negotiating the multiple, overlapping claims of landlords, towns, the state itself and pastoralists on the same lands was pivotal in the long-term survival of this economic sector.

OPTIMALISASI TATA RUANG DAN ETALASE UNTUK MENINGKATKAN DAYA TARIK KONSUMEN

This community service activity aims to optimize spatial arrangement and display layout to enhance consumer appeal for the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) of the Komunitas Sukses Berjamaah Indonesia (KSBI) in South Jakarta. Lecturers from IBI Kosgoro 1957 participated in this activity, focusing on improving the effectiveness of spatial arrangement and displays, which will positively impact sales and the growth of the MSMEs. This activity began with an outreach to KSBI members on the importance of an attractive spatial arrangement and display to capture consumer attention. In this outreach, the IBI Kosgoro 1957 lecturers shared knowledge and practical experience on effective spatial design and marketing strategies through appealing displays. After the outreach, an analysis of the spatial arrangement and displays at KSBI was conducted to identify areas that needed improvement. The lecturers and their team collaborated with KSBI members to redesign the layout and displays, making them more attractive and functional. They considered factors such as product arrangement, lighting, visual merchandising, and efficient space management. Next, the implementation of changes to the layout and displays was carried out in collaboration between the IBI Kosgoro 1957 lecturers, their team, and KSBI members. They worked together to plan and execute the necessary changes. The IBI Kosgoro 1957 lecturers provided guidance and recommendations to KSBI members in optimizing their spatial arrangement and displays. The results of this activity are expected to enhance consumer appeal towards KSBI MSMEs. With effective spatial arrangements and attractive displays, MSME products are expected to be better showcased and catch the attention of consumers, ultimately boosting sales and business growth for KSBI members. This community service activity also provided KSBI members with knowledge and skills in managing their spatial arrangements and displays. They can apply design principles to increase the effectiveness of their spatial arrangements and displays in the future.

The organization of the product allocation on the shelf space of the warehouse rack with the creation of separate categories allows for a more rational use of available resources. This allows for optimization of warehouse space by ensuring a compact and logical product arrangement, making them easy to find and retrieve. This approach also reduces the amount of time spent on processing orders and reduces the likelihood of picking errors. As a result, the overall efficiency of warehouse operations and inventory management is improved. The purpose of the study is to develop a mathematical model of product allocation on a warehouse rack with simultaneous categorization of goods and shelves vertically and horizontally. The study is important for warehouse logistics.

Geographical indication of coffee in Brazil: identification and effects of the critical success factors towards sustainability

The Geographical Indication (GI) is more than just a mechanism for protecting farmers. This mechanism, materialized by a sign of geographical identity, determines differentiation and added value in a complex process that requires an intense effort of governance and cooperativism. The aim of this study was to analyze the critical success factors for increasing competitiveness and sustainability in the process of geographical identification for certified coffee producers in the Espírito Santo do Pinhal region of Brazil. Factors such as market arrangements, production techniques, quality differentiation, price formation, cost structure, organization and articulation around the construction and maintenance of the market by producers in this region were analyzed. The proposed methodology used an analytical framework of the certification of origin market that correlates market practices with production arrangements in a longitudinal process, considering their challenges and impacts. The results indicate that critical success factors (CSFs) identified in the certification of GIs for coffee producers are related to strong cooperative and associative actions and the presence of entities that coordinate the acquisition process and establish the rules and obligations of those involved, always aiming to encourage investment in technology and technification in pursuit of efficiency and the quality of the final product. In addition, strict control of the production method, avoiding the use of production techniques that harm the environment with good coffee-growing practices, contributes to obtaining and maintaining the GI as well as to develop appropriate attributes of sustainability.

The importance of retail behavior quality to maintain consumers’ loyalty: findings from Indonesian micro retail businesses

The rapid retail development has led to increasingly fierce competition, and micro retail businesses need innovation to survive and thrive. Retail innovation is reflected in the quality of consumers’ behavior in making purchase decisions. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the role of retail behavior quality as an intervening variable on merchandise offer and store image on consumers’ loyalty in micro retail businesses. In this study, the confirmatory and explanatory methods were used, and it was conducted in Jember Regency, East Java, Indonesia with a sample size of 306 consumers of micro retail businesses. Moreover, the data were obtained through a questionnaire, and Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modeling analysis was used to determine the direct and indirect effects. The results showed that merchandise offer had a positive and significant effect on consumers loyalty both directly and indirectly through retail behavior quality with total effect of 50.4%. Store image had no significant direct effect on consumers loyalty. However, it had a positive and significant direct effect on consumers through retail behavior quality with total effect of 22%. In this context, retail behavior quality played an important role in increasing consumers’ loyalty to micro retail businesses. These results contributed to improved retail quality behavior oriented towards transparency in quality of goods, employee attitudes, in-store environment, product arrangement, and established good relationships with consumers to maintain loyalty. A Narrative Review: Optimization Algorithms for The Problem of Allocating Shelf Space in Retailing

The Shelf Space Allocation Problem (SSAP) is of great significance in the retail industry since it directly impacts the effectiveness of product placement and organization within a shop. This issue arises from a deficiency in comprehending the strategic arrangement of products, resulting in the wasteful utilization of space. Notably, SSAP has a significant negative impact on store operations and customer satisfaction, resulting in wasted space and a reduction in the number of products that can be displayed to customers. Hence, the careful selection of an optimization method is crucial for effectively managing the allocation of shelf space in retail operations. This study aims to examine optimization algorithm techniques for addressing the issue of shelf space allocation in a particular environment, such as enhancing sales, minimizing congestion, or optimizing space utilization. Several studies have considered several optimization algorithm methods that have been used in solving the SSAP, including Genetic Algorithm (GA), Linear Programming (LP), Dynamic Programming (DP), Simulated Annealing (SA), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), and Variable Neighborhood Search (VNS). These methods are selected based on problem characteristics, including nonlinearity, integer requirements for variables, and constraints such as limited rack space. This optimization method helps retailers to effectively optimize shelf space allocation and maximize sales and profits. The study thus reviewed previous papers examining optimization algorithm methods to solve the problem of shelf space allocation. Those methods are crucial in improving product organization efficiency, customer satisfaction, and overall business performance.

The Layout Planning At Sehati Dua Minimarket, Ciawigebang, Kuningan

The layout is one of the factors that affect visitor satisfaction. Where a good design will be the face of the company itself. There is a layout problem in the Sehati minimarket location where the product arrangement displayed has not been neatly arranged. The display of goods is placed directly on the floor without using any shelves. One way to optimize the relationship between product group proximity and use of space or layout. This research uses Market Basket Analysis and Activity Relationship Chart method by measuring three kinds of quantitative measures, namely support (factor domination level), confidence (factor level) and the ratio of improvement (viability factor proximity) and relationship product proximity qualitatively. Strategi Pemasaran Produk pada Toko Riska Bagstore Gampong Padang Sakti Kecamatan Muara Satu Kota Lhokseumawe

The Riska Bagstore shop, which started as an online shop in 2014 and has now developed into a physical shop, offers various products with a target market of female students and mothers. They implement offline marketing strategies via billboards and online via TikTok and WhatsApp. However, they face problems such as lack of market understanding, suboptimal stock management, and less neat product arrangement. With annual revenue of IDR 769,819,000 and monthly fluctuations, improvements in market strategy, stock management and product arrangement are needed to improve store performance. Price competition will be a consideration for consumers/customers. This research aims to analyze what strategies are carried out by TokoRiska Bagstore and what obstacles are experienced in marketing products at TokoRiska Bagstoe. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach. Data collection techniques use interview, observation and documentation methods. Based on the research results and discussions that have been studied, the researcher concludes that the research strategy results show that the marketing strategy at the Riska Bagstore store is an offline and online marketing strategy. The offline marketing strategy carried out by the Riska Bagstore store is in the form of personal selling, by offering products directly to consumers who come directly to the store. Meanwhile, the online marketing carried out by the Riska Bagstore store is by using social media, namely in the form of Tiktok, by making videos and explaining the information clearly so that consumers can immediately see what is being promoted by the Riska Bagstore store.

(Invited) Unraveling the PEC: Insight and Strategies for Addressing Materials Design By ML Support

Unlimited access to clean, sustainable and renewable source of energy seems to be a dream scenario, however with an assistance of ML (machine learning) support the experimental work which as a matter of fact reveals the right descriptors may gain a powerful tool allowing to omit a time consuming trials path. However, precise definition of descriptors will require an identification of the bottleneck materials parameters, features and processes, thus different architectures and working arrangements will be shown and discussed in this presentation in order to test their usfulness for prediction of novel and better arrangements for hydrogen and other carbon based solar fuels production. When a suitable material is identified, then there are numerous strategies to overcome potential bottlenecks, including doping, nanostructuring, surface modification, vacances optimisation or addition of co-catalysts, thus a game changer is a precise screening of possible predictors in order to identify the most performance determinant factor. Therfore, over 400 tailor-made for PEC reduction process samples based on the semiconductor oxides have been prepared and measured in order to bulid a pre-base for ML tests. In this presentation we will discuss the strengths and weaknesses of different architectures and working arrangements for hydrogen and carbon-based solar fuels production; different materials and working systems, their compositions, geometry, properties will be discussed in view of their impact on the final prediction.

A proposal for enhanced accountability in train station facilities management: The case of the commuter trains (KCI) in Jakarta, Indonesia

Background: The commuter trains (KCI), the commuter train system in Jakarta and its surrounding areas, faces significant challenges in station operation and maintenance, impacting the passenger experience. The current competitive tendering approach for procuring station facilities lacks a clear framework for accountability, resulting in inconsistent service delivery and passenger dissatisfaction. This paper proposes solutions to enhance accountability in train station facility management, aiming to improve the passenger experience. Method: By utilizing Moore's strategic triangle, the study identifies fundamental reasons for the accountability issues and examines the challenges posed by the restricted flexibility of the existing competitive tendering system. Potential solutions, including enhanced competitive tendering with performance-based negotiation, in-house production, and collaborative arrangements, are explored. Findings: The most feasible solution is recommended to address KCI's operational challenges. Despite KCI's popularity and extensive network, weak accountability, particularly in unresponsive management, disrupts the efficiency of train station facilities. Conclusion: This paper emphasizes the need for KCI to improve its accountability mechanisms to ensure safety, security, trustworthiness, convenience, ease of access, and equity for all passengers, ultimately enhancing the public value delivered by the commuter train system. Novelty/Originality of this study: The novelty of this research is developing a performance-based solution to improve accountability in KCI station facility management through enhanced competitive tendering and collaborative arrangements to enhance passenger experience and operational efficiency.

Study on the Mechanical Performance, Durability, and Microscopic Mechanism of Cement Mortar Modified by a Composite of Graphene Oxide and Nano-Calcium Carbonate

Nano-calcium carbonate (NC) is a novel ultrafine solid powder material that possesses quantum size effects, small size effects, surface effects, and macroscopic quantum effects that ordinary calcium carbonate lacks. As a nanomaterial with superior properties, graphene oxide (GO) has been studied extensively in the field of construction. In microscopic characterization, the reaction between NC and tricalcium aluminate (C3A) formed a new hydration product, hydrated calcium aluminum carbonate (C3A·CaCO3·11H2O), which enhanced the arrangement of hydration products and optimized the distribution of pore size in the mortar. Regarding the mechanical properties, the addition of GO and NC significantly enhanced the early-age mechanical performance of the mortar. In terms of durability, the incorporation of GO and NC significantly improved the water permeability, chloride ion permeability, and resistance to sulfate attack of the cement mortar. In this study, it was found that adding 1 wt% NC and 0.02 wt% GO not only improves the mechanical and durability properties but also promotes the hydration reaction according to the microstructure analysis. With the help of NC, compared with other studies, the amount of GO is reduced, while the cost is reduced, and the application of GO in the field of cement-based materials is promoted.

The local range of natural cosmetics: Consumer perceptions and assessments in Germany

AbstractNatural cosmetics offer the opportunity to reduce the environmental burden caused by the consumption of cosmetic products. This qualitative study analyzes the local range of natural cosmetics and related consumer perceptions and assessments in two case cities in Germany by applying a mixed‐method approach of store checks and the photovoice method. Results of the study show that there is only a limited match of the actual range and consumer perception for some types of retail businesses and a mismatch for product categories. Additionally, participants showed little awareness of the most common natural cosmetic certifications. Consumer assessments about the range of natural cosmetics were influenced by factors such as the arrangement of products in the shops and consumers' experience and knowledge about natural cosmetic brands. Retailers can use the study results in arranging natural cosmetics accordingly; companies can use it to emphasize branding, and policy‐makers can increase consumer knowledge about natural cosmetics.

Agroecological Yards, Food Sovereignty and Production of Ecosystem Services in South Bahia, Brazil

Objective: This study aims to characterize productive backyards, in the identity territory of the Far South of Bahia, highlighting the challenges, potential, characteristics, productive arrangements and ecosystem services perceived by families. Theoretical Framework: In this article, we will discuss the concepts of ecosystem services, productive backyards and agroecosystems. Method: The study was carried out in 18 agrarian reform settlement lots in the municipalities of Teixeira de Freitas and Prado/BA. Data were collected through interviews, semi-structured questionnaires, transversal walks, soil collection for chemical analysis and plant collection for identification. Results and Discussion: Productive backyards stood out for being a biodiverse space, important in generating income, especially non-financial income, promoting food sovereignty, improving soils and promoting quality of life for the families surveyed. The backyards ranged from 0.54 to 3.1 hectares and 94.4% have predominantly agroecological management. 230 special species were found, such as fruit, native, medicinal, horticultural and spiritual, and 15 ecosystem services were evaluated. We conclude that backyards are a powerful tool in promoting food sovereignty, generating income, environmental and biodiversity restoration and promoting of ecosystem services. Research Implications: Assess whether ecosystem services resulting from productive backyards are important for the construction of public policies and socio-biodiverse productive strategies for the family farming segment. Originality/Value: It is unprecedented research on settlement projects, presenting a research method, data and important information for evaluating productive backyards.

Theoretical analysis of using multiple borehole heat exchangers for production of heating and cooling energy in shallow geothermal reservoirs with underground water flow

In this work the feasibility of using the double-U borehole heat exchangers (BHE) in multiple arrangements for production of heating and cooling energy has been investigated.Theoretical case studies are given for a few hypothetical lithological cases corresponding to the lithology that can be found in City of Zagreb. The results show interference between the borehole heat exchangers and limits of use of shallow reservoir with respect to slow convection and loss of accumulated energy in the reservoir. Special emphasis is placed on the description of the groundwater flow determined by the parameters of the shallow geothermal reservoir, such as permeability, water saturation, thermal conductivity, specific heat capacity and soil density, topography, precipitation, etc. Simulations have been performed in FeFlow coupled with Python user-scripts for individual control of the BHE’s, and the surface equipment is modelled using RES2GEO. To assess the accuracy of numerical predictions in simulating thermal responses, FeFlow software was utilized to conduct Thermal Response Tests (TRT) for individual Borehole Heat Exchangers (BHEs). These numerical results were then juxtaposed with empirical TRT data collected from a site near Velika Gorica, a town within the City of Zagreb. For each case simulation is done for one year with one hour resolution. The temperature distribution analysis highlights notable differences between scenarios, where the temperature field with lower permeability experiences significant variations, particularly near the BHE. Here, temperatures can soar to 20 °C during cooling periods and plummet to 4 °C in heating seasons. These fluctuations cause overheating and subcooling of the reservoir, impairing the heat pump’s efficiency and necessitating increased electricity consumption. By using Multivariate linear regression and Multi-layer perceptron regressor method, the main parameter for determination of COP of ground source heat pump. The analysis reveals that the majority of errors fall within the range of ± 5 %, although the MLA prediction method exhibits slightly more frequent errors. Additionally, the R2 scores demonstrate strong performance: the MLA procedure achieves 0.95 for heating and 0.99 for cooling, while the MLP procedure attains 0.99 for both heating and cooling phases.

Designing a Temporary Camp for Accommodation After an Earthquake in a Multi-purpose Open Space Located in Shahid Beheshti University in Tehran, Iran

Background and objective The current study focuses on the planning, management and design of a temporary accommodation camp as well as the design of a temporary shelter. The main goal is to present the physical model of a temporary accommodation camp in the football field of Shahid Beheshti University, Tehran, Iran, to be used after an earthquake, considering the physical and non-physical conditions of the district 1 and the existing infrastructure. Method This is a descriptive-analytical survey study. Qualitative method and interviews with five experts, field observation, documents, and articles were used for collecting information. Results Based on the findings of observations, interviews and the library information, the suitable space for the establishment of the accommodation complex in the university was identified and predicted, based on this, the description of the duties of the established bodies was stated. Then, according to the design priorities, temporary accommodation was designed and the production arrangements were determined to reduce the risk. Conclusion The results give an insight into the construction projects related to temporary accommodation and transportation in post-disaster conditions in Tehran, considering the economic, environmental and psychological conditions of the residents, and issues such as innovative locating, flexibility, coordinated planning and reusability and the use of social capital.
