Huizache Leaves and Agave Bagasse Incorporated into Granulated and Pelletized Concentrates and Their Effects on Methane Production and in vitro Fermentation Patterns in Ruminant Diets

Background: The use of non-conventional food sources is a key element in facing the current problems derived from climate change and food shortages that demand the establishment of new sustainable feeding systems for ruminants. Moreover, densification methods like pelleting constitute a way to improve the quality and acceptability as well as to facilitate the handling of supplements. The objective of this study was to evaluate Huizache leaves and agave bagasse incorporated into granulated and pelletized concentrates and their effects on methane production and in vitro fermentation patterns in ruminant diets. Methods: A protein concentrate granulated and pelletized containing Huizache leaves and agave bagasse were mixed with a high-quality forage (alfalfa hay) using a 2×3 factorial arrangement with a total of six treatments. In each treatment were determined crude protein, carbohydrates, in vitro digestibility, in vitro gas, methane, carbon dioxide, volatile fatty acids, ammoniacal nitrogen and microbial nitrogen. The variables were submitted to an analysis of variance using the procedure MIXED SAS and statistical differences were declared at P less than 0.05. Result: There was an interaction (P less than 0.01) between concentrate source (granulated vs pelleted) and relation (alfalfa hay + concentrate source) on maximum gas production “A” (P less than 0.05). Also, there was an interaction between concentrate source (granulated vs pelleted) and relation (alfalfa hay: concentrated) on microbial nitrogen production (P less than 0.05). The microbial nitrogen production increased in 55 % with pelleted concentrate in relation to granulated concentrate (P less than 0.05).

Effect of mixtures of legume species on ruminal fermentation, methane, and microbial nitrogen production in batch and continuous culture (RUSITEC) systems

The effect of cicer milkvetch ( Astragalus cicer L.) and sainfoin ( Onobrychis viciifolia Scop.) on ruminal fermentation, methane production, and microbial nitrogen synthesis was assessed in two experiments. Experiment 1 analyzed two legumes, cicer milkvetch and sainfoin at two stages (vegetative and late flower) incubated with alfalfa ( Medicago sativa) at five inclusion rates 0:100; 25:75, 50:50, 75:25, and 100:0 (as DM) in batch culture. Experiment 2 analyzed vegetative cicer milkvetch and alfalfa incubated in ratios of 25:75, 50:50, 75:25, and 100:0 (as DM) in continuous culture systems (RUSITEC). In batch culture, increased dry matter disappearance (DMD), and propionate percentage (%total), and reduced methane (mg·g−1 DMD) occurred with vegetative cicer milkvetch inclusion. In RUSITEC, DMD linearly increased ( P < 0.01), acetate:propionate ratio quadratically decreased, while ammonia (NH3-N) concentration ( P < 0.01) and butyrate percentage (%total) linearly decreased ( P < 0.05) with increasing inclusion of cicer milkvetch. No differences were observed for methane (CH4) production (mg·g−1 DMD), or short chain fatty acid (SCFA) production (mmol·day−1). Microbial nitrogen synthesis and efficiency of protein synthesis linearly increased ( P < 0.05) with increased inclusion of cicer milkvetch. Results suggest cicer milkvetch may result in synchronicity of energy and nitrogen during rumen fermentation, which could enhance cattle production.

Effect of ergot alkaloids and a mycotoxin deactivating product on in vitro ruminal fermentation using the Rumen simulation technique (RUSITEC).

The rumen simulation technique (RUSITEC) was used to investigate the effect of ergot alkaloids (EA) and a mycotoxin deactivating product (Biomin AA; MDP) on nutrient digestion, ruminal fermentation parameters, total gas, methane, and microbial nitrogen production. Ruminal fermentation vessels received a feedlot finishing diet of 90:10 concentrate:barley silage (DM basis). Using a randomized complete block design, treatments were assigned (n = 4 vessels/treatment) within two RUSITEC apparatuses in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement. Treatments included: (1) control (CON) diet (no EA and no MDP); (2) CON diet + 1 g/d MDP; (3) CON diet + 20 mg/kg EA; and (4) CON diet + 20 mg/kg EA + 1 g/d MDP. The study was conducted over 14 d with 7 d of adaptation and 7 d of sample collection. Data were analyzed in SAS using PROC MIXED including fixed effects of EA, MDP, and the EA×MDP interaction. Random effects included RUSITEC apparatus and cow rumen inoculum (n = 4). Ergot alkaloids decreased dry matter (DMD) (P = 0.01; 87.9 vs. 87.2%) and organic matter disappearance (OMD) (P = 0.02; 88.8 vs. 88.4%). Inclusion of MDP increased OMD (P = 0.01; 88.3 vs. 88.9%). Neutral detergent fiber disappearance (NDFD) was improved with MDP; however, an EA×MDP interaction was observed with MDP increasing (P < 0.001) NDFD more with EA diet compared to CON. Acetate proportion decreased (P = 0.01) and isovalerate increased (P = 0.03) with EA. Consequently, acetate:propionate was reduced (P = 0.03) with EA. Inclusion of MDP increased total volatile fatty acid (VFA) production (P < 0.001), and proportions of acetate (P = 0.03) and propionate (P = 0.03), and decreased valerate (P < 0.001), isovalerate (P = 0.04), and caproate (P = 0.002). Treatments did not affect (P ≥ 0.17) ammonia, total gas, or methane production (mg/d or mg/g of organic matter fermented). The inclusion of MDP reduced (P < 0.001) microbial nitrogen (MN) production in the effluent and increased (P = 0.01) feed particle-bound MN. Consequently, total MN decreased (P = 0.001) with MDP. In all treatments, the dominant microbial phyla were Firmicutes, Bacteroidota, and Proteobacteria, and the major microbial genus was Prevotella. Inclusion of MDP further increased the abundance of Bacteroidota (P = 0.04) as it increased both Prevotella (P = 0.04) and Prevotellaceae_UCG-003 (P = 0.001). In conclusion, EA reduced OMD and acetate production due to impaired rumen function, these responses were successfully reversed by the addition of MDP.

Provision of a protein-rich supplement for grazing suckling female beef calves to improve productive performance and metabolic response

ObjectiveThis study was conducted to evaluate the effects of the provision of a protein-rich supplement on productive performance, and metabolic profile on grazing suckling female beef calves in tropical conditions during 150 d of experimentation.MethodsFifty-six Nellore suckling female calves, and their respective dams were distributed in a completely randomised design and made to undergo two treatments as follows: UNS (without supplementation), and SUP (supplementation with 5 g/kg body weight [BW] of a protein supplement). Throughout the experiment, animal performance and metabolic profile were evaluated. Also, ureagenesis and gluconeogenesis were assessed for gene expression.ResultsSUP female calves showed a higher voluntary intake (p≤0.03) of the diet components evaluated, digestibility of organic matter (p≤0.02) and microbial nitrogen production (MICN; p≤0.02) compared to UNS female calves. In its turn, serum urea nitrogen (p≤0.01) and insulin-like growth factor-1 (p≤0.03) levels and ureagenesis (p≤0.04) increased in SUP female calves compared to UNS female calves. Blood glucose and triglyceride levels were not affected by supplementation. The average daily gain (ADG) from SUP female calves was higher (p≤0.02) compared with UNS female calves. However, supplementation did not affect the body measures of the animals.ConclusionIn summary, provision of a protein-rich supplement improves the intake and nutrients digestibility, ADG and final BW and increases metabolic indicators of the protein status in grazing suckling female beef calves in tropical conditions.

Effects of brewers\u2019 spent grain protein hydrolysates on gas production, ruminal fermentation characteristics, microbial protein synthesis and microbial community in an artificial rumen fed a high grain diet

BackgroundBrewers’ spent grain (BSG) typically contains 20% – 29% crude protein (CP) with high concentrations of glutamine, proline and hydrophobic and non-polar amino acid, making it an ideal material for producing value-added products like bioactive peptides which have antioxidant properties. For this study, protein was extracted from BSG, hydrolyzed with 1% alcalase and flavourzyme, with the generated protein hydrolysates (AlcH and FlaH) showing antioxidant activities. This study evaluated the effects of AlcH and FlaH on gas production, ruminal fermentation characteristics, nutrient disappearance, microbial protein synthesis and microbial community using an artificial rumen system (RUSITEC) fed a high-grain diet.ResultsAs compared to the control of grain only, supplementation of FlaH decreased (P < 0.01) disappearances of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), CP and starch, without affecting fibre disappearances; while AlcH had no effect on nutrient disappearance. Neither AlcH nor FlaH affected gas production or VFA profiles, however they increased (P < 0.01) NH3-N and decreased (P < 0.01) H2 production. Supplementation of FlaH decreased (P < 0.01) the percentage of CH4 in total gas and dissolved-CH4 (dCH4) in dissolved gas. Addition of monensin reduced (P < 0.01) disappearance of nutrients, improved fermentation efficiency and reduced CH4 and H2 emissions. Total microbial nitrogen production was decreased (P < 0.05) but the proportion of feed particle associated (FPA) bacteria was increased with FlaH and monensin supplementation. Numbers of OTUs and Shannon diversity indices of FPA microbial community were unaffected by AlcH and FlaH; whereas both indices were reduced (P < 0.05) by monensin. Taxonomic analysis revealed no effect of AlcH and FlaH on the relative abundance (RA) of bacteria at phylum level, whereas monensin reduced (P < 0.05) the RA of Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes and enhanced Proteobacteria. Supplementation of FlaH enhanced (P < 0.05) the RA of genus Prevotella, reduced Selenomonas, Shuttleworthia, Bifidobacterium and Dialister as compared to control; monensin reduced (P < 0.05) RA of genus Prevotella but enhaced Succinivibrio.ConclusionsThe supplementation of FlaH in high-grain diets may potentially protect CP and starch from ruminal degradation, without adversely affecting fibre degradation and VFA profiles. It also showed promising effects on reducing CH4 production by suppressing H2 production. Protein enzymatic hydrolysates from BSG using flavourzyme showed potential application to high value-added bio-products.

Replacing soybean hulls with grass hay on growth, intake, total tract digestibility, and rumen microbial nitrogen production of weaned Holstein dairy calves from 8 to 16 weeks of age

The objective of this experiment was to determine the effects of replacing soybean hull (SBH) pellets with grass hay (GH) on growth, intake, total-tract digestibility, and rumen microbial nitrogen production of weaned dairy calves from 8 to 16 wk of age. Holstein calves (n = 16) were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 rations containing, on a dry matter (DM) basis, 76% grower with the remaining 24% being made up of different amounts of SBH pellets and GH [0% GH, 24% SBH (0GH); 8% GH, 16% SBH (8GH); 16% GH, 8% SBH (16GH); and 24% GH, 0% SBH (24GH)]. Calves were weaned at 6 wk, housed individually, and studied from 8 to 16 wk of age. From 8 to 9 wk of age calves were offered a ration consisting of 50% of texturized starter (20% CP and 35% starch), which was offered from 3 d of age, and 50% of their assigned ration. From 9 wk until the end of the study, calves were offered 100% of their assigned ration. Intake and body weight were measured weekly, and frame measurements were taken at the beginning and end of the study. Animal behavior observations were recorded every 5 min over a 24-h period at 10 and 14 wk of age. Total fecal and urine collection was conducted for 4 d consecutively at 11 and 15 wk of age. Feed and feces were evaluated for DM, N, neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber, and starch to determine total-tract digestibility. Feces were evaluated for geometric mean particle length (Xgm) and particle size distribution. Urine was evaluated for N, creatinine, urea, and total purine derivatives to estimate microbial N yield. Calves offered 0GH and 8GH had a 20% increase in intake, average daily gain (1.23, 1.27, 0.89, and 0.71 kg/d for 0GH, 8GH, 16GH, and 24GH, respectively), and feed efficiency compared with 16GH and 24GH. Calves offered 8GH had the greatest levels of neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber digestibility, as well as the greatest estimated microbial N yields. Inclusion of forage increased rumination time (2.75, 6.89, 7.18, and 8.16 h/d for 0GH, 8GH, 16GH, and 24GH, respectively) and decreased fecal Xgm by ~35% compared with calves offered 0GH. In the current study, increasing the replacement of SBH with GH beyond 8% was detrimental to weaned calf performance. These results indicate that when diets containing 8% GH and 16% SBH were fed to recently weaned calves, rumen functionality and feed efficiency were optimized compared with the other GH-SBH combinations.

Effects of fertiliser nitrogen rate to spring grass on apparent digestibility, nitrogen balance, ruminal fermentation and microbial nitrogen production in beef cattle and in vitro rumen fermentation and methane output

The effects of two fertiliser nitrogen (N) application rates - 15 (LN) or 80 (HN) kg N/ha - to Lolium perenne dominant swards in spring, on grass dry matter (DM) intake, digestion, rumen fermentation, microbial N production and N-balance in beef cattle, and in vitro fermentation and methane production were studied. Sixteen Charolais steers with a mean live weight (s.d.) of 475 (18.4) kg, were used in a completely randomised block design experiment and offered zero-grazed grass harvested 21-d post N application. The same grass was incubated in an eight-vessel RUSITEC in a completely randomised block design experiment. The HN treatment had a 540 kg/ha higher grass DM yield, and a 20 g/kg DM higher crude protein (CP) concentration compared to LN. There was no difference (P > 0.05) in DM intake, or in vivo DM, organic matter (OM) and N digestibility between treatments. Rumen fermentation variables pH, lactic acid, ammonia (NH3) and total volatile fatty acid (VFA) concentration were similar (P > 0.05) for both treatments. Nitrogen intake was 19 g/d higher (P < 0.05) for HN compared to LN. Total and urine N loss was 16 and 14 g/d greater (P < 0.05), respectively, for HN compared to LN, but faecal N loss did not differ (P > 0.05) between treatments. The quantity of N retained and N-use efficiency did not differ (P > 0.05) between LN and HN. Plasma urea concentration was 1 mmol/L greater (P < 0.05) for HN compared to LN. Estimated microbial N production was greater (P < 0.05) for HN compared to LN. In vitro NH3 concentrations were higher (P < 0.05) for HN compared to LN, whereas in vitro rumen pH, lactic acid and VFA concentrations and molar proportions did not differ (P > 0.05) between HN and LN. In vitro methane and total gas output were not different (P > 0.05) between treatments. Reducing fertiliser N application rate to grass in spring reduced total and urinary N excretion, which has environmental benefits, with no effects on in vitro methane output.

Effect of replacing wheat bran with spineless cactus plus urea in sugarcane-based diets for sheep

In times of drought, the availability of feed is reduced, and the use of concentrate ingredients, such as wheat bran, becomes costly for animal production. Thus, the use of spineless cactus emerges as a potential solution to the shortage of feed and water during prolonged drought periods. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of replacing wheat bran with spineless cactus plus urea (0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%) in sugarcane-based diets for sheep on nutrient intake, feeding behaviour, nitrogen balance and microbial protein synthesis. Five male Santa Ines sheep with average initial bodyweight of 34.0 ± 3.6 kg were used in a 5 × 5 Latin square. The maximum intakes of dry matter (DM) (1414 g/day), organic matter (OM) (1281 g/day), crude protein (CP) (204 g/day), neutral detergent fibre corrected for ash and protein (NDFap) (425 g/day), and total digestible nutrients (TDN) (890 g/day) were estimated with replacement levels of 80.2%, 75.3%, 88.6%, 50.5%, and 79.3% respectively. Feeding behaviour was not altered by replacing wheat bran with spineless cactus plus urea. Nitrogen retention increased by 0.10 g/day, while plasmatic urea nitrogen increased by 0.20 mg/day for every 1% level of replacement. The maximum production of microbial nitrogen (15.9 g/day) and microbial protein synthesis (99.4 g/day) were estimated with replacement levels of 45.8 and 45.7%, respectively. It is concluded that up to 80% wheat bran could be replaced with spineless cactus plus urea in sugarcane-based diets for sheep. Microbial nitrogen production, nitrogen balance and excretion of urinary purine derivatives in Corriedale ewes under water deprivation

Abstract The objective of this study was to determine microbial N production, and urinary excretion of PDs in Corriedale ewes under water deprivation. Nine Corriedale ewes (average BW=45±4.5 kg) were individually fed diets based on maintenance requirements in metabolic crates. Ewes were assigned to three treatment groups according to a 3×3 Latin square design for 3 periods of 21 days duration. The treatments were free access to water (FAW ), 2h water deprivation (2hWD), and 3h water deprivation (3hWD) following feeding. Daily water intake decreased linearly as water deprivation time following feeding increased. Feed intake and fecal excretion were not different among the treatment groups. Urine weight and volume were higher in FAW than water deprived groups. Nitrogen balance including urinary N, retained N, urinary N/intake N, and retained N/intake N were lower in FAW group than other treatment groups, whereas no differences were observed in intake N, fecal N, digestible N, and fecal N/intake N among the treatment groups. Allantoin concentration tended to be higher in FAW group than 2hWD and 3hWD groups while no differences were observed in uric acid, xanthine+hypoxanthine and creatinine concentrations. Microbial N production per DOMR was higher in 2hWD and 3hWD groups than FAW group whereas no differences were observed between 2hWD and 3hWD groups. Index of PDC decreased linearly with water deprivation. It is concluded that water deprivation following feeding, especially 2 h water deprivation in ewes improved microbial N production.

Redirection of Metabolic Hydrogen by Inhibiting Methanogenesis in the Rumen Simulation Technique (RUSITEC).

A decrease in methanogenesis is expected to improve ruminant performance by allocating rumen metabolic hydrogen ([2H]) to more energy-rendering fermentation pathways for the animal. However, decreases in methane (CH4) emissions of up to 30% are not always linked with greater performance. Therefore, the aim of this study was to understand the fate of [2H] when CH4 production in the rumen is inhibited by known methanogenesis inhibitors (nitrate, NIT; 3-nitrooxypropanol, NOP; anthraquinone, AQ) in comparison with a control treatment (CON) with the Rumen Simulation Technique (RUSITEC). Measurements started after 1 week adaptation. Substrate disappearance was not modified by methanogenesis inhibitors. Nitrate mostly seemed to decrease [2H] availability by acting as an electron acceptor competing with methanogenesis. As a consequence, NIT decreased CH4 production (−75%), dissolved dihydrogen (H2) concentration (−30%) and the percentages of reduced volatile fatty acids (butyrate, isobutyrate, valerate, isovalerate, caproate and heptanoate) except propionate, but increased acetate molar percentage, ethanol concentration and the efficiency of microbial nitrogen synthesis (+14%) without affecting gaseous H2. Nitrooxypropanol decreased methanogenesis (−75%) while increasing both gaseous and dissolved H2 concentrations (+81% and +24%, respectively). Moreover, NOP decreased acetate and isovalerate molar percentages and increased butyrate, valerate, caproate and heptanoate molar percentages as well as n-propanol and ammonium concentrations. Methanogenesis inhibition with AQ (−26%) was associated with higher gaseous H2 production (+70%) but lower dissolved H2 concentration (−76%), evidencing a lack of relationship between the two H2 forms. Anthraquinone increased ammonium concentration, caproate and heptanoate molar percentages but decreased acetate and isobutyrate molar percentages, total microbial nitrogen production and efficiency of microbial protein synthesis (−16%). Overall, NOP and AQ increased the amount of reduced volatile fatty acids, but part of [2H] spared from methanogenesis was lost as gaseous H2. Finally, [2H] recovery was similar among CON, NOP and AQ but was largely lower than 100%. Consequently, further studies are required to discover other so far unidentified [2H] sinks for a better understanding of the metabolic pathways involved in [2H] production and utilization.

In Vitro Yield of Microbial-N from Fermentation of Glucogenic and Lipogenic Diets Provided by Different Sources of Rumen Degradable Amino Acids

This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of different sources of rumen degradable amino acids, soybean meal versus a commercial source of hydrolyzed cottonseed cake with low molecular weight (Fortid®), on the in vitro ruminal fermentation responses and the microbial nitrogen yield of glucogenic (n=8) and lipogenic (n=8) diets. An in vitro gas production technique was used to determine the differences in microbial nitrogen yield of the diets. Sources of grain including barely and corn were used in the glucogenic diets as grinded or steam flaked, while in the lipogenic diets, corn silage, sugar beet pulp, linseed and prill fat were used to provide the energy needed for rumen fermentation. The experiment was a randomized design including two types of diets × two sources of rumen degradable amino acids factorial arrangement. The gas produced from the fermentable fraction (b) was higher for the lipogenic diets containing corn silage and F than those for the others. The fraction (b) and microbial nitrogen to diet nitrogen ratio were greater (p<0.05) for Fortid® versus soybean meal. The true substrate digestibility of glucogenic diets were significantly higher (p<0.05) compared to those of lipogenic diets. Both the grain sources used as steam flaked caused an increase in the rate of gas produced (c) and microbial nitrogen to diet nitrogen ratio. There were significant interactions (p<0.005) of the type of diets with either soybean meal or Fortid® on microbial nitrogen to diet nitrogen. The results indicated that pre-hydrolyzed protein sources which are rich in low molecular weight peptides may be considered as candidates to improve rumen feed fermentation and microbial nitrogen production with both glucogenic and lipogenic diets. This conclusion was arrived at from the different patterns of action of soybean meal and Fortid® in the present in vitro rumen fermentation responses.

Effects of Phytoecdysteroids (PEDS) Extracted from Cyanotis arachnoidea on Rumen Fermentation, Enzyme Activity and Microbial Efficiency in a Continuous-Culture System.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of supplementation of phytoecdysteroids (PEDS) extracted from Cyanotis arachnoidea on rumen fermentation, enzymes activity and microbial efficiency in a dual flow continuous-culture system. A single-factor experimental design was used with twelve fermenters in 4 groups with 3 replicates each. Fermenters were incubated for a total of 7 days that included first 4 days for adaptation and last 3 days for sampling. PEDS was added at levels of zero (as control), 5, 10, and 15 mg/g of the substrate (DM). The results showed that increasing supplementation levels of PEDS resulted in incremental digestibility of dry matter (DMD) (quadratic, P = 0.001) and organic matter (OMD) (quadratic, P = 0.031), but unchanged digestibility of neutral detergent fiber (NDFD), crude protein (CPD) and acid detergent acid (ADFD). As supplementation levels of PEDS increased, there were decreased response in the concentration of ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) (linear, P = 0.015) and increased response in molar proportions of butyrate (linear, P = 0.004), but unchanged response in total volatile fatty acid (TVFA) and the molar proportion of acetate and propionate, respectively. Increasing PEDS supplementation levels decreased the ratio of acetate to propionate (linear, P = 0.038), suggesting an alteration of rumen fermentation pattern occurring due to PEDS supplementation in the diet. Supplementation of PEDS significantly increased activities of glutamate dehydrogenase (quadratic, P = 0.001), alanine dehydrogenase (quadratic, P = 0.004), glutamate synthase (linear, P = 0.038), glutamine synthetase (quadratic, P = 0.011), respectively. There were no discernible differences in the activity of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMCase), xylanase and protease regardless of the treatments. The daily production of microbial nitrogen (linear, P = 0.002) and microbial efficiency (MOEEF) (linear, P = 0.001) increased linearly as supplementation levels of PEDS increased. The decreased response of fluid NH3-N and the increased response of MN indicated that PEDS positively increased the synthesis of microbial proteins.

Suitable strategy to improve nitrogen utilization and reduce the environmental impact of Nellore bulls supplemented on tropical pasture.

Expansion of the biodiesel industry has increased the crude glycerin (CG) supply. Crude glycerin has the potential of replacing corn in ruminant diets because the glycerol can be converted to glucose in the liver of ruminants, providing energy for cellular metabolism. The objective was to evaluate the effects of CG with urea, soybean meal, cottonseed meal, and corn gluten feed, respectively, on intake, digestibility, microbial protein yield, and efficiency of N utilization. Five Nellore bulls (initial BW of 448 kg [SD 14]) grazing tropical pasture were used in a 5 × 5 Latin square design. The supplements were control (no supplementation; only free-choice mineral mixture ad libitum), CG with urea (CG-Urea), CG with soybean meal, CG with cottonseed meal, and CG with corn gluten. Crude glycerin was used in all supplements to replace corn (15% of DM supplement). There were differences between CG-Urea and other supplements with regard to intake of DM (% of BW and total; < 0.01), OM ( < 0.01), CP ( < 0.01), and TDN ( < 0.01). The digestibility of CP was greater ( = 0.04) for animals supplemented with CG-Urea than for those fed other supplements. Animals supplemented with CG-Urea showed greater N intake ( < 0.01) and N ammonia ( = 0.04) than those supplemented with other treatments. Nitrogen retained (g/d) was not affected by protein source but was greater for cattle fed a protein supplement compared with cattle fed the control supplement ( < 0.01). Supplementing the animals with protein sources increased ( = 0.02) the daily production of rumen microbial nitrogen (g/d) compared with the control group. Microbial protein (g/d) was lesser for the control than for protein sources ( = 0.02). However, when expressed relative to TDN ( = 0.35) and CP ( = 0.82), there were no differences across treatments. Crude protein intake per digestible OM intake (g CP/kg digestible OM intake) was greater for animals fed protein sources compared with animals fed control supplements ( < 0.01). Based on nutrients intake and microbial protein yield, CG-Urea supplement has a greater feeding value compared with other protein sources. Crude glycerin, when used to replace corn in 15% of DM supplement, may be effective to improved N utilization and microbial protein yield in rumen of Nellore bulls grazing cv. Marandu.

Desempenho nutricional de bovinos em pastejo durante o período de transição seca-águas recebendo suplementação proteica

Objetivou-se avaliar os efeitos do fornecimento de quantidades crescentes de suplemento proteico durante o período de transição seca-águas sobre o consumo, a digestibilidade e sobre aspectos do metabolismo de compostos nitrogenados em bovinos. Foram utilizados cinco novilhos Nelore com peso corporal (PC) inicial de 273 kg, fistulados no rúmen e mantidos individualmente em piquetes de capim-braquiária com 0,34 ha. Biogeochemical and metagenomic analysis of nitrite accumulation in the Gulf of Mexico hypoxic zone

AbstractThe Louisiana Shelf in the Gulf of Mexico experiences recurrent bottom water hypoxia under summertime eutrophic conditions. The onset, maintenance, and breakdown of hypoxia are associated with dynamic microbial biogeochemical cycles. However, the distribution of microbial taxa and metabolisms across Shelf oxygen gradients remains under‐characterized. We combined biogeochemical analyses of nitrogen (N) distributions and metabolic rates with metagenomic and metatranscriptomic analysis of summertime Shelf waters. Samples from an east–west transect during July 2012 revealed an inverse relationship between nitrite and oxygen concentrations, with concentrations exceeding 1 μmol L−1 at ∼ 50% oxygen saturation and reaching 4.6 μmol L−1 at the most oxygen‐depleted sites. Historical data confirms that nitrite accumulation occurs frequently in this region both above and below the hypoxic threshold. Experimental incubations demonstrated a strong decoupling between the two steps of nitrification, with ammonia oxidation proceeding up to 30 times faster than nitrite oxidation under low oxygen. 16S rRNA gene, metagenome, and metatranscriptome sequencing revealed a diverse microbial community, stratified over shallow (&lt; 10 m) depth gradients, with an enrichment of ammonia‐oxidizing Thaumarchaeota genes and transcripts in deeper more oxygen‐depleted layers, and a comparatively low representation of sequences related to nitrite oxidation. A range of factors, including temperature and substrate availability, which may be linked indirectly to bottom water oxygen content, potentially drives decoupling of ammonia and nitrite oxidation on the Louisiana Shelf. Nitrite accumulation in hypoxic zones remains understudied and may have important effects on microbial nitrogen flux, algal dynamics, and production.

Níveis de proteína bruta em suplementos multiplos para novilhas nelore em pastejo na época seca

It was evaluated the effect of levels of crude protein supplement on performance, intake, digestibility and microbial efficiency. Forty Nelore heifers, with an initial average age of eight months and an initial average weight of 230 + 3,39 kg, were used. The evaluated supplements were: mineral mix provided ad libitum (MM), supplements containing 10%, 20%, 30% and 40% crude protein (CP), representing the treatments PB10, PB20, PB30, PB40, respectively. It was observed a higher final body weight and weight gain for supplemented animals compared to non-supplemented (P<0.10). The intake of all nutrients were higher (P <0.10) for supplemented animals compared to non-supplemented. The crude protein intake had increased linearly with increasing levels of CP in supplements. The digestibility of DM, OM, CP and TDN were higher (P<0.10) in supplemented animals compared to non-supplemented. There was a quadratic effect on CP digestibility with increased levels of CP in supplements. The production of microbial nitrogen (N mic), serum urea nitrogen (NUS) and reason urea nitrogen in the urine/creatinine nitrogen (NUU/Ncre) were higher (P<0.10) for supplemented animals. Quadratic effect was observed on production of Nmic, microbial efficiency (Emic), NUS and NUU/Ncre with increased levels of CP in multiple supplements. The multiple supplementation provides higher weight gain and final body weight in the period after weaning from Nellore females.

Soybean meal replaced by slow release urea in finishing diets for beef cattle

Eight crossbred steers (average body weight of 418kg) fitted with ruminal and abomasal cannula were used to evaluate the effects of replacing soybean meal (SBM) with slow-release urea (SRU) in beef cattle diets containing two concentrate levels. The experimental design included two 4×4 Latin squares, which were run simultaneously. Each Latin square received one level of concentrate [400 or 800g/kg on a dry matter (DM) basis]. Within each Latin square, the four replacement levels of soybean meal protein with slow-release urea were applied to the animals (0%, 33%, 66% and 100% of substitution on N basis). The DM intake as well as organic matter (OM) intake and crude protein (CP) intake decreased linearly (P<0.05) as SBM was replaced with SRU. Ruminal digestibility coefficient of OM tended to be greater (P=0.074) for the 40 % concentrate diet. DM and OM passage rate (kp) were greater (P<0.05) on the 80% concentrate diet. A cubic effect (P<0.10) of SBM replacement with SRU on ruminal ammonia (NH3–N) concentration in relation to time was detected. A quadratic effect on pH was observed (P<0.10) when replacing SBM with SRU. Nitrogen intake, nitrogen excreted in the feces, nitrogen balance and efficiency of nitrogen use decreased linearly (P<0.10) as SRU increased in the diet, whereas the total nitrogen excreted in urine increased linearly (P=0.007). The production of microbial nitrogen and microbial efficiency were not affected by the experimental treatments (P>0.10). A lower intake of DM, OM, and CP was observed when cattle were fed SRU compared to SBM. However, the use of SRU did not change the digestibility and digestion rate (kd) and kp of DM, OM, CP and neutral detergent fiber corrected for ash and protein (NDFap). In summary, SRU provides higher concentrations of NH3–N throughout a day than SBM in cattle fed low concentrate diets.

An evaluation of the performance and efficiency of nitrogen utilization in cattle fed tropical grass pastures with supplementation

The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of nitrogen utilisation (ENU) and animal performance in cattle fed tropical grass pastures and receiving nitrogen supplementation, using a meta-analytical approach. The dataset used to evaluate the ENU was compiled from 10 experiments carried out in Brazil, which were published between 2009 and 2012, totalling 47 treatment means. To compose the dataset for animal performance evaluation, mean treatment values were collected from 44 experiments involving grazing beef cattle, which were published in Brazil from 2001 to 2012, totalling 182 treatment means. The relationships between variables were evaluated using linear or non-linear mixed models, taking into account the random variations among experiments. There was no association between ENU and the balance of nitrogen in the rumen and the efficiency of microbial synthesis in the rumen (P>0.05). The ENU was linearly associated with the dietary content of digestible organic matter in the diet (DOM) and relative production of microbial nitrogen in the rumen (NMICR), which was positive with DOM (P<0.04) and negative with NMICR (P<0.03). The relationships between ENU and dietary crude protein (CP) and the concentration of rumen ammonia nitrogen (RAN) were described using hyperbolic models (P<0.05). The estimated values that correspond to the apparent equilibrium point (i.e., ENU=0) were 108g CP/kg of dry matter and 6.30mg RAN/dL of rumen fluid. There was a positive response on weight gain as the amount of supplement increased (P<0.01). However, this relationship was interactively affected by CP content in the supplement (P<0.02) and in the forage (P<0.01). Through this way, the response of weight gain to supplement is improved by increasing the CP content of the supplement, but decreased as the CP in the forage increases. From this it can be conclude that there is a positive response to nitrogen supplementation with regards to ENU and animal performance. The main benefit of supplementation is the improvement of the nitrogen status in the animal׳s metabolism.

Supplementation of suckling beef calves with different levels of crude protein on tropical pasture

The effects of supplementation with different levels of crude protein on performance, intake and nutrient digestibility and efficiency of microbial protein synthesis in suckling beef calves on pasture were assessed. Fifty-five calves, with an average age of 100 days and an initial average body weight of 110 ± 7.5 kg and their respective dams, were used. The experimental design was completely randomised with five treatments and 11 replications. The experimental treatments for calves were as follows: control = calves received only mineral mixture; supplementation levels = calves received supplement containing 8, 19, 30 or 41% of crude protein (CP, at a rate of 0.5% of body weight (BW)). The cows received only mineral mixture ad libitum. Supplemented calves had higher (P < 0.1) average daily gain (ADG). Protein levels showed a quadratic effect (P < 0.1) on average daily gain (ADG) of calves. There was no difference in total dry matter (DM) intake (P > 0.1). However, intake of dry matter forage (DMF) presented cubic profiles (P < 0.1), with CP levels in the supplements. Supplementation increased (P < 0.1) the digestibility of nutrients, except for the digestibility of neutral detergent fibre. Supplementation increased (P < 0.1) the production of microbial nitrogen and N losses in urine. It can be concluded that multiple supplementations optimise the performance of beef calves on creep feeding. The intake of supplements with CP levels between 8 and 30% partially replaces of the pasture ingested by calves and increases the digestibility of the diet.

Nutritional performance of cattle grazing on low-quality tropical forage supplemented with nitrogenous compounds and/or starch

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of protein and/or starch supplementation on the nutritional performance of cattle grazing on low-quality tropical forage. Five crossbred steers (Holstein × Gyr) with an average body weight (BW) of 397 kg that were fitted with ruminal and abomasal cannulae were used. The animals were kept in individual signal-grass (Bracharia decumbens) paddocks. Five treatments were evaluated: 1 - control (without supplementation); 2 - supplementation with 1 g of crude protein (CP) per kg of BW; 3 - supplementation with 2.5 g of starch per kg of BW; 4 - supplementation with CP and starch as described for treatments 2 and 3; and 5 - supplementation as described for treatment 4 but replacing the corn starch with a mixture of corn starch and nitrogenous compounds, thereby resulting in an energy supplement of 150 g CP/kg of dry matter. The experiment was performed according to a 5 × 5 Latin square design in a 2 × 2 + 1 factorial arrangement. The forage intake was not affected by any of the factors evaluated in this study. The production of microbial nitrogen in the rumen was not affected by nitrogen or starch supplementation. The apparent nitrogen balance was only increased when both starch and nitrogen were supplied. Supplementation with both starch and nitrogenous compounds for cattle grazing on low-quality tropical forage is characterized by an interactive metabolic effect that increases nitrogen accretion by the animals.
