Axion production in the η → ππa decay within SU(3) chiral perturbation theory

We study the axion and axion-like particle production from the η → ππa decay within the SU(3) chiral perturbation theory up to the one-loop level. The conventional SU(3) chiral low energy constants are found to be able to reabsorb all the divergences from the chiral loops in the η → ππa decay amplitude, and hence render the amplitude independent of the renormalization scale. The unitarized η → ππa decay amplitudes are constructed to take into account the ππ final-state interactions and also properly reproduce the perturbative results from the chiral perturbation theory. Detailed analyses between the perturbative amplitudes and the unitarized ones are given in the phenomenological discussions. By taking the values of the chiral low energy constants in literature, we predict the Dalitz distributions, the spectra of the ππ and aπ systems, and also the branching ratios of the η → ππa process by varying ma from 0 to mη − 2mπ.

New constraints on axion-like particles from IXPE polarization data for magnetars

We derive new constraints on axion-like particles (ALPs) using precision X-ray polarization studies of magnetars. Specifically, we use the first detection of polarized X-rays from the magnetars 4U 0142+61 and 1RXS J170849.0-400910 by the ImagingX-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) to place bounds on the product of the ALP-photon and ALP-nucleon couplings, gaγgaN, with gaN being responsible for ALP production in the core of the magnetar and gaγ controlling the ALP-photon conversion probability in the magnetosphere. These bounds are most sensitive to the magnetar core temperature, and we use two benchmark values of 1×108 K and 5×108 K to derive our constraints. For the latter choice, our bounds are competitive with the existing bounds on the coupling product coming from a combination of CAST (for gaγ) and SN1987A (for gaN). We advocate for more precise and extensive observational campaigns in the higher end of the 2–8 keV spectral window, where ALP-induced polarization is the strongest. We further advocate for hard X-ray polarization studies of young, hot, near-Earth magnetars with strong magnetic fields.

Bounds on ALP-mediated dark matter models from celestial objects

We have studied the signals from axion-like particles (ALPs) as dark matter mediators from celestial objects such as neutron stars, brown dwarfs or white dwarfs. We consider the accumulation of dark matter inside the celestial objects using the multiscatter capturing process. The production of ALP from the dark matter annihilation can escape the celestial object and decay into gamma-rays and neutrinos before reaching the Earth. We investigate our model using gamma-ray observations from Fermi and H.E.S.S. and neutrino observations from IceCube and ANTARES. The effective Lagrangian approach allows us to place constraints on the ALP-photon and ALP-fermion couplings. In the gamma-ray channel, our results are able to rule out the existence of ALP with mass up to ~ O\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$ \\mathcal{O} $$\\end{document}(10) GeV. On the other hand, the neutrino observations can be used to probe a higher mass range with ALP mass up to ~ O\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$ \\mathcal{O} $$\\end{document}(100) GeV.

Exploring interference effects between two ALP effective operators at the LHC

We observe that most studies of axion-like particle (ALP) production channels at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) focus on a single type of ALP operator for each process in the effective field theory framework. In this work, we propose an alternative approach that considers two or more types of relevant ALP effective operators together in some specific ALP production channels and study their interference effects. Using the pp → tja process with a → γγ as an example, we show that this approach allows us to constrain the ALP interactions with both the W boson and the top quark, as well as their interference in a single process. For the final state with two isolated photons and a top quark decaying semi-leptonically, we predict that the future bounds on the ALP decay constant can reach around fa ~ 10 (20) TeV for 25 GeV < Ma < 100 GeV at the LHC with 300 (3000) fb−1 luminosity.

Supernova limits on QCD axionlike particles

In this paper, we explore the phenomenology of massive axionlike particles (ALPs) coupled to quarks and gluons, dubbed “QCD ALPs,” with an emphasis on the associated low-energy observables. ALPs coupled to gluons and quarks not only induce nuclear interactions at scales below the QCD scale, relevant for ALP production in supernovae (SNe), but naturally also couple to photons similarly to the QCD axion. We discuss the link between the high-energy formulation of ALP theories and their effective couplings with nucleons and photons. The induced photon coupling allows ALPs with masses ma≳1 MeV to efficiently decay into photons, and astrophysical observables severely constrain the ALP parameter space. We show that a combination of arguments related to SN events rule out ALP-nucleon couplings down to gaN≳10−11–10−10 for ma≳1 MeV—a region of the parameter space that was hitherto unconstrained. Single axion-like particles production in the γγ channel at high energy muon colliders

Axion-like particles (ALPs), which are pseudo-scalar particles, appear in various new physics models with the spontaneous global symmetry breaking. The difference between ALPs and axion models is that for the former both masses and couplings of ALPs are free parameters. It appears that the ALPs with masses above 1[Formula: see text]GeV are beyond the reach of low-energy accelerators, existing cosmological and astrophysical constraints, while high-energy colliders provide unique possibilities to explore such particles. With the establishment of the International Muon Collider Collaboration, muon colliders have been widely concerned. In general, ALPs are mainly produced at muon colliders through the [Formula: see text] annihilation and electroweak vector-boson-fusion (VBF) processes. In this paper, we study the prospect of the production of heavy ALPs with mass greater than 10[Formula: see text]GeV via the massless [Formula: see text]-fusion process at the multi-TeV muon collider. Focusing on the couplings of ALPs to the Standard Model gauge bosons, we obtain the excluding and discovering capabilities for ALPs at the 3[Formula: see text]TeV and 10[Formula: see text]TeV muon colliders. Our numerical results suggest that the multi-TeV muon collider may be more sensitive to ALPs with the mass of 35–400[Formula: see text]GeV than LHC, and can provide the possibility to search for ALPs with masses greater than 3[Formula: see text]TeV. In addition, we also discuss the effect of narrow width approximation on the ALP search sensitivity.

Search for high-mass exclusive diphoton production with tagged protons in proton-proton collisions at s=13 TeV

A search is presented for high-mass exclusive diphoton production via photon-photon fusion in proton-proton collisions at s=13 TeV in events where both protons survive the interaction. The analysis utilizes data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 103 fb−1 collected in 2016–2018 with the central CMS detector and the CMS and TOTEM precision proton spectrometer (PPS). Events that have two photons with high transverse momenta (pTγ&gt;100 GeV), back-to-back in azimuth, and with a large diphoton invariant mass (mγγ&gt;350 GeV) are selected. To remove the dominant inclusive diphoton backgrounds, the kinematic properties of the protons detected in PPS are required to match those of the central diphoton system. Only events having opposite-side forward protons detected with a fractional momentum loss between 0.035 and 0.15 (0.18) for the detectors on the negative (positive) side of CMS are considered. One exclusive diphoton candidate is observed for an expected background of 1.1 events. Limits at 95% confidence level are derived for the four-photon anomalous coupling parameters |ζ1|&lt;0.073 TeV−4 and |ζ2|&lt;0.15 TeV−4, using an effective field theory. Additionally, upper limits are placed on the production of axionlike particles with coupling strength to photons f−1 that varies from 0.03 TeV−1 to 1 TeV−1 over the mass range from 500 to 2000 GeV. © 2024 CERN, for the CMS and TOTEMs Collaboration 2024 CERN

Axion-like particles in radiative quarkonia decays

Radiative quarkonia decays offer an ideal setting for probing Axion-Like Particle (ALP) interactions. This paper provides a comprehensive review of ALP production mechanisms through the e+e− → γa process at B- and Charm-factories, alongside an analysis of potential ALP decay channels. We derive constraints on ALP couplings to Standard Model (SM) fields, based on recent experimental results on quarkonia decays by the Belle II and BESIII collaborations. The analysis distinguishes between “invisible” and “visible” ALP decay scenarios. The “invisible” scenario, characterised by a mono-γ plus missing-energy signature, enables stringent limits on ALP-photon and ALP-quark (b or c) couplings. Moreover, extensive research at flavour factories has explored various “visible” ALP decays into SM final states, which depend on a larger set of ALP-SM couplings. To streamline the “visible” ALP scenario, we introduce additional theoretical assumptions, such as universal ALP-fermion couplings, or we adopt specific benchmark ALP models, aiming to minimise the number of independent variables in our analysis.

Top-philic ALP phenomenology at the LHC: the elusive mass-window

We study the LHC phenomenology of an Axion Like Particle (ALP) that couples only derivatively with the top quark at tree level. We inspect the radiatively induced couplings with the SM fermions and (gauge) bosons and the associated production and decay mechanisms of the ALP. We focus on the most challenging mass window that remains open for a top-philic ALP, i.e., the range between tens and hundreds of GeV. Not only ALP production processes but also virtual ALP contributions to final states with top quarks are considered in detail. We show how searches through resonant production, such as ALP production in association with a tt¯\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$ t\\overline{t} $$\\end{document} pair, are complementary to precision measurements of tt¯\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$ t\\overline{t} $$\\end{document} and tt¯tt¯\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$ t\\overline{t}t\\overline{t} $$\\end{document} final states, the latter being competitive or even more powerful for a top-philic ALP in this mass window. Finally, we explore the scenario where the top-philic ALP acts as a mediator to a dark-matter sector, resulting in missing energy signatures at the LHC. We find that the LHC constraints from tt¯\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$ t\\overline{t} $$\\end{document}, tt¯tt¯\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$ t\\overline{t}t\\overline{t} $$\\end{document} and ALP + jet production, together with those from tt¯\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$ t\\overline{t} $$\\end{document} + ALP production, can already exclude a large fraction of the parameter space leading to the correct relic abundance.

Search for axion-like particles through nuclear Primakoff production using the GlueX detector

We report on the results of the first search for the production of axion-like particles (ALPs) via Primakoff production on nuclear targets, γA→aA, in the “SRC-CT” experiment using the GlueX detector at Jefferson Lab. This search uses an integrated luminosity of 100 pb⋅−1nucleon on a 12C target with a real photon beam of energies 6<Eγ<10.8 GeV, and explores the mass region of 200<ma<450 MeV via the decay a→γγ. This mass range is between the π0 and η meson masses, which enables the use of the measured η meson production rate to obtain absolute bounds on the ALP production with reduced sensitivity to experimental luminosity and detection efficiency. We find no evidence for an ALP, consistent with previous searches in the quoted mass range, and present limits on the effective photon coupling scale of O(1TeV−1). We further find that the ALP production limit we obtain is hindered by the peaking structure of the non-target-related dominant background the in GlueX spectrometer, which we treat by using data on 4He to estimate and subtract it. We comment on how this search can be improved in a future higher-statistics dedicated measurement.

Probing the interactions of axion-like particles with electroweak bosons and the Higgs boson in the high energy regime at LHC

We study the interactions of axion-like particles (ALPs) with the Standard Model particles, aiming to probe their phenomenology via non-resonant searches at the LHC. These interactions are mediated by higher dimensional effective operators within two possible frameworks of linearly and non-linearly realised electroweak symmetry breaking. We consider the ALPs to be light enough to be produced on-shell and exploit their derivative couplings with the SM Higgs boson and the gauge bosons. We will use the high momentum transfer processes, namely hZ, Zγ, WW and WWγ production from pp collisions. We derive upper limits on the gauge-invariant interactions of ALPs with the electroweak bosons and/or Higgs boson that contribute to these processes, from the re-interpretation of the latest Run 2 available LHC data. The constraints we obtain are strong for ALP masses below 100 GeV. These allowed effective interactions in the ALP parameter space yield better significance at HL-LHC and thus, offer promising avenues for subsequent studies. Furthermore, we augment our cut-based analysis with gradient-boosted decision trees, which improve the statistical significance distinctly across these interaction channels. We briefly compare the results with the complementary probe of these couplings via direct production of ALPs in association with the Higgs boson or a vector boson.

The photon content of the neutron

In this work, we complete our CT18qed study with the neutron’s photon parton distribution function (PDF), which is essential for the nucleus scattering phenomenology. Two methods, CT18lux and CT18qed, based on the LUXqed formalism and the DGLAP evolution, respectively, to determine the neutron’s photon PDF have been presented. Various low-Q2 non-perturbative variations have been carefully examined, which are treated as additional uncertainties on top of those induced by quark and gluon PDFs. The impacts of the momentum sum rule as well as isospin symmetry violation have been explored and turned out to be negligible. A detailed comparison with other neutron’s photon PDF sets has been performed, which shows a great improvement in the precision and a reasonable uncertainty estimation. Finally, two phenomenological implications are demonstrated with photon-initiated processes: neutrino-nucleus W-boson production, which is important for the near-future TeV–PeV neutrino observations, and the axion-like particle production at a high-energy muon beam-dump experiment.

Phenomenology of axionlike particles with universal fermion couplings revisited

Axionlike particles (ALPs) emerge in many extensions of the Standard Model as pseudo-Goldstone bosons of a spontaneously broken global symmetry. Understanding their phenomenology in high-energy collisions is crucial for optimizing experimental searches and understanding the exploration potential of future experiments. In this paper, we revise the phenomenology of ALPs with universal couplings to fermions. In particular, we analyze the hierarchy and uncertainty of the various ALP production channels depending on the proton collision energy and the placement of the experiment, and provide improved calculations of the hadronic decay modes. Searches for axionlike particles via γγ fusion at future e+e− colliders

Opportunities for searches for axionlike particles (ALPs) coupling to photons in e+e− collisions at the Future Circular Collider (FCC-ee) and International Linear Collider (ILC) are investigated. We perform a study of the photon-fusion production of ALPs decaying into two photons, e+e−→γγe+a(γγ)e−, over the light-by-light continuum background, for the planned FCC-ee and ILC center-of-mass energies and integrated luminosities. An analysis of the feasibility measurements is presented using parametrized simulations for two types of detectors. Upper limits at 95% confidence level (C.L.) on the cross section for ALP production, σ(γγ→a→γγ), and on the ALP-photon coupling are obtained over the ma≈0.1–1000 GeV ALP mass range, and compared to current and future collider searches. Production cross sections down to σ(γγ→a→γγ)≈1 fb (1 ab) will be probed at ma≈1 (300) GeV, corresponding to constraints on the axion-photon coupling as low as gaγγ≈2×10−3 TeV−1. Ultra-Peripheral Collisions physics with ATLAS

Exclusive production of dilepton pairs, γγ → ℓℓ, ℓ = e, μ, τ, is studied using data from ultraperipheral collisions (UPC) of lead nuclei at TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector [1] at the LHC. The process of interest proceeds via photon-photon interactions in the strong electromagnetic fields of relativistic lead nuclei. In the case of the dielectron production, within experimental uncertainties the measured integrated cross section is in good agreement with the QED predictions from the Monte Carlo programs STARlight and SuperChic, confirming the broad features of the initial photon fluxes. The differential cross section shows systematic differences from these predictions which are more pronounced at high absolute rapidity, |yee | and scattering angle, |cosθ*|. In the dimuon production case, the measured cross sections at large absolute rapidity |yμμ | is found to be about 10-20% larger in data than in the calculations, suggesting the presence of larger fluxes of photons in the initial state. The γγ → ττ process is observed in the UPCs with a significance exceeding 5 standard deviations. This observation can be turned into a constraint on the τ-lepton anomalous magnetic moment. Measurement of light-by-light scattering data are also performed during the LHC Run 2. The diphoton invariant mass distribution is used to set limits on the production of axion-like particles. This result provides the most stringent limits to date on axion-like particle production for masses in the range 6-100 GeV.

Polarization formalism for ALP-induced X-ray emission from magnetars

Missions like NASA's Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) are poised to provide an unprecedented view of the Universe in polarized X-rays. Polarization probes physical anisotropies, a fact exploited by particle physicists to look for the anisotropic a E·B operator in the axion-like-particle (ALP) Lagrangian. Such studies have typically focused on polarization in the radio and microwaves, through local or cosmic birefringence effects. To such polarization studies we add X-rays emanating from magnetars — a class of neutron stars with near-critical strength magnetic fields — that are important targets for IXPE. ALPs produced in the neutron star core convert to X-rays in the magnetosphere; such X-rays are polarized along the direction parallel to the dipolar magnetic field at the point of conversion. We develop the full theoretical formalism for ALP-induced polarization in the presence of dipolar magnetic fields. For uncorrelated photon and ALP production mechanisms, we completely disentangle the ALP contributions to the Stokes parameters in terms of the ALP intensity, the ALP-to-photon conversion probability, and the ALP-induced birefringence. In the proper limit, our results demonstrate that the inclusion of ALPs suppresses the observed degree of circular polarization compared to its pure astrophysical value. Our results can also be used to impose limits on ALP couplings with IXPE polarization data from magnetars 4U 0142+61 and 1RXS J170849.0-400910, the subject of upcoming work.

Search for an axion-like particle with forward proton scattering in association with photon pairs at ATLAS

A search for forward proton scattering in association with light-by-light scattering mediated by an axion-like particle is presented, using the ATLAS Forward Proton spectrometer to detect scattered protons and the central ATLAS detector to detect pairs of outgoing photons. Proton-proton collision data recorded in 2017 at a centre-of-mass energy of sqrt{s} = 13 TeV were analysed, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 14.6 fb−1. A total of 441 candidate events were selected. A search was made for a narrow resonance in the diphoton mass distribution, corresponding to an axion-like particle (ALP) with mass in the range 150–1600 GeV. No excess is observed above a smooth background. Upper limits on the production cross section of a narrow resonance are set as a function of the mass, and are interpreted as upper limits on the ALP production coupling constant, assuming 100% decay branching ratio into a photon pair. The inferred upper limit on the coupling constant is in the range 0.04–0.09 TeV−1 at 95% confidence level.

Investigating the gamma-ray burst from decaying MeV-scale axion-like particles produced in supernova explosions

We investigate the characteristics of the gamma-ray signal following the decay of MeV-scale Axion-Like Particles (ALPs) coupled to photons which are produced in a Supernova (SN) explosion. This analysis is the first to include the production of heavier ALPs through the photon coalescence process, enlarging the mass range of ALPs that could be observed in this way and giving a stronger bound from the observation of SN 1987A. Furthermore, we present a new analytical method for calculating the predicted gamma-ray signal from ALP decays. With this method we can rigorously prove the validity of an approximation that has been used in some of the previous literature, which we show here to be valid only if all gamma rays arrive under extremely small observation angles (i.e. very close to the line of sight to the SN). However, it also shows where the approximation is not valid, and offers an efficient alternative to calculate the ALP-induced gamma-ray flux in a general setting when the observation angles are not guaranteed to be small. We also estimate the sensitivity of the Fermi Large Area Telescope (Fermi-LAT) to this gamma-ray signal from a future nearby SN and show that in the case of a non-observation the current bounds on the ALP-photon coupling gaγ are strengthened by about an order of magnitude. In the case of an observation, we show that it may be possible to reconstruct the product gaγ 2 ma , with ma the mass of the ALP.

Axionlike particle production at beam dump experiments with distinct nuclear excitation lines

Searches for axion-like particles (ALPs) are motivated by the strong CP problem in particle physics and by unexplained dark matter in astrophysics. In this letter, we discuss novel ALP searches using monoenergetic nuclear de-excitation photons from a beam dump, using IsoDAR as an example. We show that IsoDAR can set limits that close a gap in traditional QCD axion searches using the ALP-photon coupling, as well as provide sensitivity to large regions of new parameter space in models where ALPs couple to nucleons and electrons. We also show how isotope decay-at-rest experiments may be designed to improve potential ALP production and optimize detection sensitivity.

Search prospects for axionlike particles at rare nuclear isotope accelerator facilities

We propose a novel experimental scheme, called DAMSA (Dump-produced Aboriginal Matter Searches at an Accelerator), for searching for dark-sector particles, using rare nuclear isotope accelerator facilities that provide high-flux proton beams to produce a large number of rare nuclear isotopes. The high-intensity nature of their beams enables the investigation of dark-sector particles, including axion-like particles (ALPs) and dark photons. By contrast, their typical beam energies are not large enough to produce the backgrounds such as neutrinos resulting from secondary charged particles. The detector of DAMSA is then placed immediate downstream of the proton beam dump to maximize the prompt decay signals of dark-sector particles, which are often challenging to probe in other beam-dump-type experiments featuring a longer baseline, at the expense of an enormous amount of the beam-related neutron (BRN) background. We demonstrate that BRN can be significantly suppressed if the signal accompanies multiple, correlated visible particles in the final state. As an example physics case, we consider ALPs interacting with the Standard Model photon and their diphoton decay signal at DAMSA implemented at a rare nuclear isotope facility similar to the Rare isotope Accelerator complex for ON-line experiment under construction in South Korea. We show that the close proximity of the detector to the ALP production dump makes it possible to probe a high-mass region of ALP parameter space that the existing experiments have never explored.
