Visual Anthropology

Visual anthropology encompasses two parallel aims: the production of anthropological media (including ethnographic film, video, photography, drawing, interactive media, etc.) as well as the anthropological analyses of media (including films, videos, photography, drawings, etc.). Conceptually, visual anthropology draws on theoretical and methodological connections between human perception and imagination, the use and production of audiovisual media, and ethnography. This entry explores how the work of visual anthropologists has contested, expanded, and transformed the discipline of anthropology. It also illustrates how the methods and debates in visual anthropology raise critically important questions about authorship, power, and the representation of culture that bear on the work of artists, filmmakers, photographers, curators, and journalists, among many others. The production of audiovisual materials in anthropological research is often overlooked. Yet technological advances in film and audio recording in the mid-twentieth century afforded anthropologists and filmmakers increasing opportunities to incorporate filmmaking into ethnographic and cross-cultural research. Since the 1980s, the establishment of visual anthropology programs within some academic departments, combined with the increased accessibility of video and digital media technologies globally, prompted important critiques of anthropological image-making and image use. It also helped develop new approaches to understanding visual experiences as a cultural practice. Four central concerns of visual anthropology at present are ethnographic filmmaking and theory, Indigenous and activist media, the study of visual culture, and multimodal anthropology. Taken together, this entry shows how visual anthropology has contested, expanded, and transformed understandings of power, authority, and meaning in media-making practices.

Route 360, New Roads for Communication

The authors argue that engaging with narrative techniques in technological developments in film has implications for our senses and perceptions of realities that we can’t necessarily anticipate. But it should not restrain us from communicating by using new technology. We can’t control the museum visitors’ experiences, in spite of our guiding theories and methods, but we certainly have responsibility for setting issues in motion. Some of the multiple connections, conjunctions and layers we create by bringing our methods and technology to the narratives of an exhibition only become evident for us after the production of audiovisual material. These lead us to reflect in hindsight, hoping to raise our awareness about the implications in future projects. We discuss how newer technologies like 360 VR video can ‘rattle’ us out of our sensorial comfort zone because of the unexpected character of the viewing experience. And how does this affect our sense of reality in re-creating it audiovisually? We also explore the multiple significance of framing and montage in relation to the production of two films, based on participatory methods.

EDUCAÇÃO FÍSICA & NOVAS LINGUAGENS COMUNICACIONAIS: SENTIDOS E SIGNIFICADOS DA PRODUÇÃO DE RECURSOS AUDIOVISUAIS NA FORMAÇÃO DE PROFESORES

The Media Laboratory – LaboMidia – at the Sports Center of the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina – UFSC provides all the university’s undergraduate and post-graduation students as well as its professors and researchers with the opportunity to have a closer contact with themes which are related to Physical Education, Media, and New Information Technologies, such as the production of audiovisual materials. This study relates a research work which aimed at investigating the concepts and meanings related to the production of video materials for teacher education in Physical Education. The adopted methodology included focus groups with faculty and students who produced the greatest amount of videos at LaboMidia in 2003 and 2004 as well as qualitative content analysis of their statements. This observation showed that, besides being a didactic strategy, video production can contribute to the teacher education of Physical Education teachers as to the autonomous and critical use of media in daily school activities. Controlling deutscher TV-Sender — Aufgaben, Instrumente und Probleme in der Praxis

“Management Control” or “Controlling” (as it is usually called in German management literature), is a frequently discussed management function in the research concerning German TV-stations, usually as a transfer of existing controlling concepts to TV-management. This paper sketches a model for the analysis of the particular business fields TV-stations engage in and presents empirical results of a recent study about TV-controlling in Germany. It examines the participation, use of instruments and problems of controlling in the business fields “Development and Production of Audiovisual Material” and “Programming”. TV-companies differ considerably from industrial production or service companies in these two areas.

Media utilization by faculty at the university of Qatar

The findings of this study revealed that the science and education faculties of are more apt to use audiovisual media than the other faculty members. Transparencies, 16 mm films, and video programs are the most frequently used media. In general, the faculty believed that audiovisual media made significant contributions in the teaching/learning process. They also indicated some obstacles to the utilization of audiovisual media such as: lack of time to select and preview materials; the language of materials; and insufficient variety of materials to correlate with the curriculum. The majority of faculty members indicated that educational technology services are very adequate, while one third of the faculty did have problems particularly in the production of audiovisual materials. Almost half of the faculty members cannot operate one or more categories of audiovisual equipment.

The production of medical audiovisual teaching materials – Chinese style

The production of medical audiovisual material for the advancement of medical education in China is a problem requiring an urgent solution. To achieve faster, better and more economical results, the production of audiovisual material must be undertaken with careful planning and efficient management. A systematic approach is essential to control production. The procedures described are: leadership and management; choice of subject and medium; production; distribution and evaluation.

The role of broadcasting in health promotion in North America.

The range in the choice of viewing available to the British public by the end of the century could, and probably will, look much like that currently available to American viewers. This paper examines the implications to be drawn from American experience in determining future strategies for health promotion broadcasting in the UK. During a visit to the United States and Canada, sponsored by the King Edward's Hospital Fund for London, the author looked at the historical development and background to broadcasting services across North America and Canada, and at current policies and practice in broadcasting for the promotion of health. The first section provides an overview of the North American broadcasting systems, both the United States and Canada. The role of commercial interests is explored, particularly in relation to the existence and form of health promotion programming. The involvement of health professionals and community activists in the production of audio-visual material is discussed, particularly in the light of the competitive and pluralist nature of the television industry. The interests of the media professionals in promoting high audience ratings by attracting the attention of the public and holding it have their pros and cons for medical policy-makers. The shortcomings of the present situation in the United States where health and media professionals act not as educational partners but as business colleagues (so that viewers and patients are treated as consumers) forms a recurrent theme in the second section of the survey.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Audiovisual materials and the telephone: medical teaching at a distance.

The telephone conference or linked-tutorial-using loudspeaking telephones operating over the regular public telephone lines and exchanges-offers a solution to the problem of delivering collective teaching to groups of medical students, who have been dispersed throughout several district hospitals, away from the academic units, for their clinical experience. The interactive sound links established by this method are illustrated by specially prepared audiovisual packages. These are copied and distributed to the scattered student groups. The paper describes the development of the telephone methods, the design and production of audiovisual materials, and gives an assessment of student reactions and attitudes to the teaching method.

The Production of Audio-Visual Materials and their Use in the Teaching of Modern Languages
