Oxytocin receptor function regulates neural signatures of pair bonding and fidelity in the nucleus accumbens.

The formation of enduring relationships dramatically influences future behavior, promoting affiliation between familiar individuals. How such attachments are encoded to elicit and reinforce specific social behaviors in distinct ethological contexts remains unknown. Signaling via the oxytocin receptor (Oxtr) in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) facilitates social reward as well as pair bond formation between mates in socially monogamous prairie voles 1-9 . How Oxtr function influences activity in the NAc during pair bonding to promote affiliative behavior with partners and rejection of other potential mates has not been determined. Using longitudinal in vivo fiber photometry in wild-type prairie voles and those lacking Oxtr, we demonstrate that Oxtr function sex-specifically regulates pair bonding behaviors and associated activity in the NAc. Oxtr function influences prosocial behavior in females in a state-dependent manner. Females lacking Oxtr demonstrate reduced prosocial behaviors and lower activity in the NAc during initial chemosensory investigation of novel males. Upon pair bonding, affiliative behavior with partners and neural activity in the NAc during these interactions increase, but these changes do not require Oxtr function. Conversely, males lacking Oxtr display increased prosocial investigation of novel females. Using the altered patterns of behavior and activity in the NAc of males lacking Oxtr during their first interactions with a female, we can predict their future preference for a partner or stranger days later. These results demonstrate that Oxtr function sex-specifically influences the early development of pair bonds by modulating prosociality and the neural processing of sensory cues and social interactions with novel individuals, unmasking underlying sex differences in the neural pathways regulating the formation of long-term relationships.

Culture, sex and social context influence brain-to-brain synchrony: an fNIRS hyperscanning study

BackgroundUnique interpersonal synchrony occurs during every social interaction, and is shaped by characteristics of participating individuals in these social contexts. Additionally, depending on context demands, interpersonal synchrony is also altered. The study therefore aims to investigate culture, sex, and social context effects simultaneously in a novel role-play paradigm. Additionally, the effect of personality traits on synchrony was investigated across cultures, and a further exploratory analysis on the effects of these variables on pre- and post-session empathy changes was conducted.Methods83 dyads were recruited in two waves from Singapore and Italy and took part in a within-subjects session where they interacted with each other as themselves (Naturalistic Conversation) and as others (Role-Play and Role Reversal). Big Five Inventory (administered pre-session) and Interpersonal Reactivity Index (administered pre- and post-session) were used as measures of personality and empathy respectively, while synchrony was measured using hyperscanning functional near-infrared spectroscopy in the prefrontal cortex. After data-preprocessing and preliminary analyses, a mixture of multiple linear regression and exploratory forward stepwise regression models were used to address the above study aims.ResultsResults revealed significant main and interaction effects of culture, sex and social context on brain-to-brain synchrony, particularly in the medial left cluster of the prefrontal cortex, and a unique contribution of extraversion and openness to experience to synchrony in the Italian cohort only. Finally, culture-driven differences in empathy changes were identified, where significant increases in empathy across sessions were generally only observed within the Singaporean cohort.ConclusionsMain findings indicate lowered brain-to-brain synchrony during role-playing activities that is moderated by the dyad’s sex make-up and culture, implying differential processing of social interactions that is also influenced by individuals’ background factors. Findings align with current literature that role-playing is a cognitively demanding activity requiring greater levels of self-regulation and suppression of self-related cognition as opposed to interpersonal co-regulation characterized by synchrony. However, the current pattern of results would be better supported by future studies investigating multimodal synchronies and corroboration.

Autistic adults exhibit typical sensitivity to changes in interpersonal distance.

The visual processing differences seen in autism often impede individuals' visual perception of the social world. In particular, many autistic people exhibit poor face recognition. Here, we sought to determine whether autistic adults also show impaired perception of dyadic social interactions-a class of stimulus thought to engage face-like visual processing. Our focus was the perception of interpersonal distance. Participants completed distance change detection tasks, in which they had to make perceptual decisions about the distance between two actors. On half of the trials, participants judged whether the actors moved closer together; on the other half, whether they moved further apart. In a nonsocial control task, participants made similar judgments about two grandfather clocks. We also assessed participants' face recognition ability using standardized measures. The autistic and nonautistic observers showed similar levels of perceptual sensitivity to changes in interpersonal distance when viewing social interactions. As expected, however, the autistic observers showed clear signs of impaired face recognition. Despite putative similarities between the visual processing of faces and dyadic social interactions, our results suggest that these two facets of social vision may dissociate.

A modern university is a space for professional exchange, spiritual search, formation, development and self-development of the individual, students and teachers. Studying the motivational structures of student youth's civic engagement helps teachers in the search for teaching and communication strategies, and also contributes to project activities. Student activity is considered as a complex process of social interaction, including communication and professional activities. The article presents a study of motivational structures that stimulate students to be active in cultural and educational projects. The experiment (February - August 2023, Kazan) was based on quantitative and qualitative methods, including a survey (158 people), analysis of successful cases, application of a narrative approach to the focus group method and expert interviews. It was revealed that motivational structures directly depend on the psychological profile of generations. For Generation X, the least significant motive is “Communication” (3.17 points) and the most significant motive is “Self-development” (4.83 points). For generation Y, the least important motive is “Presentation, personal brand” (2.47 points) and the most important is the “Knowledge” motive (4.84 points). For generation Z, this parameter, indicated as less significant, was rated at 3.83 points, the highest value for generation Z is the motive “Self-development” (4.93 points). For older respondents, the structure of motives becomes more complex, expanding the composition of the components that form the motive, which leads to more informed decision-making. The leading motive for participation in cultural projects for respondents of all ages was “Self-development.” The results of the study were tested in training programs by lecturers and students of the High School of Journalism of the Kazan Federal University when creating educational and cultural projects based on The Contemporary Art Gallery of the National Museum of Fine Arts (Kazan), which is aimed at youth audiences.

Neural Representations of Observed Interpersonal Synchrony/Asynchrony in the Social Perception Network.

The visual perception of individuals is thought to be mediated by a network of regions in the occipitotemporal cortex that supports specialized processing of faces, bodies, and actions. In comparison, we know relatively little about the neural mechanisms that support the perception of multiple individuals and the interactions between them. The present study sought to elucidate the visual processing of social interactions by identifying which regions of the social perception network represent interpersonal synchrony. In an fMRI study with 32 human participants (26 female, 6 male), we used multivoxel pattern analysis to investigate whether activity in face-selective, body-selective, and interaction-sensitive regions across the social perception network supports the decoding of synchronous versus asynchronous head-nodding and head-shaking. Several regions were found to support significant decoding of synchrony/asynchrony, including extrastriate body area (EBA), face-selective and interaction-sensitive mid/posterior right superior temporal sulcus, and occipital face area. We also saw robust cross-classification across actions in the EBA, suggestive of movement-invariant representations of synchrony/asynchrony. Exploratory whole-brain analyses also identified a region of the right fusiform cortex that responded more strongly to synchronous than to asynchronous motion. Critically, perceiving interpersonal synchrony/asynchrony requires the simultaneous extraction and integration of dynamic information from more than one person. Hence, the representation of synchrony/asynchrony cannot be attributed to augmented or additive processing of individual actors. Our findings therefore provide important new evidence that social interactions recruit dedicated visual processing within the social perception network that extends beyond that engaged by the faces and bodies of the constituent individuals.

NU and Muhammadiyah Communal Conflict: Social Interaction between NU and Muhammadiyah Communities in Cinta Karya Village, Plakat Tinggi District, Musi Banyuasin Regency

NU and Muhammadiyah are the two largest Islamic organizations in Indonesia. These two large organizations have differences in their religious understanding. These differences certainly invite communal conflict between fellow Islamic communities and have an impact on hampering the process of social interaction at all levels of society, especially in the Cinta Karya Village community. This writing aims to analyze the social interactions that occur between the NU and Muhammadiyah communities in Cinta Karya Village. This writing uses a qualitative approach method with an ethnographic type. The findings obtained in this research were that there was no violence or discrimination from each community group in Cinta Karya Village. However, in the context of worship, sometimes they don’t get along at certain times. This is the source of conflict between fellow Muslim communities in this village. Despite this, their social interactions can still be said to be well established. It is recommended that reconciliation be carried out in an effort to build peace from this cold war. Positive peace can only be achieved if we communicate well with each other. Through this dialogue, it is hoped that the parties in conflict can have an open view towards each other to avoid violence.

Securitization, Desecuritization, and Resecuritization of Labor Issues in Saudi Arabia

The presence of Indonesian Workers (TKI) abroad, especially in the Middle East Region, is between the devil and the deep sea. Apart from reducing the government's responsibility to improve the economy by providing job opportunities, their presence also adds to the country's foreign exchange. However, on the other hand, the presence of TKI also adds to the problems caused by the lack of adequate legal protection, inadequate security and welfare guarantees, as well as the ups and downs of Indonesia's bilateral relations with the countries where they work as a result of the problems caused by the TKI themselves. Several policies related to sending migrant workers to the Middle East have been adopted since the time of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. However, a firm policy was only taken during the administration of President Joko Widodo with the issuance of Minister of Manpower Decree number 260 of 2015 which stopped and prohibited the placement of Indonesian workers with individual users in Middle Eastern countries. This policy can also be seen as a policy that is outside the norm considering that the Middle East is the most popular region for migrant workers. This research attempts to explain how the ups and downs of the TKI issue are seen from a security perspective using a constructivist approach. This process, which the Copenhagen School calls securitization, attempts to place threats and objects that must be secured as products of the process of social interaction. This research will also look at how securitization occurs which is then followed by desecuritization and in its development becomes resecuritization.

Makna dan Nilai Kearifan Lokal Pada Tradisi Mallasuang Manu’ Masyarakat Mandar di Kabupaten Kotabaru

Mallasuang Manu tradition is a ceremony of releasing a pair of chickens to be fought over by the community as a gratitude for the abundance of sea and land products which has a purpose as a ritual for local young people as a form of request to God Almighty to get a mate. The purpose of this research is to reveal the meaning in the mallasuang manu tradition. This research uses a qualitative approach. The data collection process was carried out by means of field research through participant observation, in-depth interviews and documentation. Data analysis was conducted using an interactive model, which consists of data collection, data reduction, data presentation and conclusion drawing/verification. The theory used is Herbert Blumer's symbolic interactionism. The results showed that the Mallasuang Manu' tradition is a tradition that is full of meaning. The meaning in this tradition is formed through a series of social interaction processes and meaning adjustments so that it can form a set of values, norms, rules and beliefs. The Mallasuang Manu' tradition is a local wisdom culture typical of the Mandar tribe as a result of the creation, taste and culture of the Mandar people. As local wisdom, the mallassuang manu tradition has values that contain philosophical meanings of the way of life. The meaning of morality of relationships between people manifested in mutual cooperation, the meaning of gratitude to God Almighty manifested in spiritual values, obedience, harmony, unity and unity manifested in cultural values. The conclusion is that the mallasuang manu tradition is a tradition that has been carried out for generations and is a condition of local wisdom that continues to be preserved by the people of Teluk Aru Village. It is hoped that this tradition can be further developed and managed properly as a traditional tourism asset of Kotabaru Regency, especially Teluk Aru Village.

Investigating Digitally Inflected Intercity Cycle Commuting

ABSTRACT Multiple smart-city cycle technologies have been developed to support cycle commuting and create lower carbon cities. Such technologies hold significant potential to reshape how cycle commuting is experienced, understood, and governed. To investigate such phenomena, this article provides a rich account of digitally inflected inter-city cycle commuting. It shows how technologies including gamification elements script cycle commuting and consequently reshape cycling practices and infrastructures. As such digitally inflected cycle commuting is revealed as a complex multifaceted process of selfhood, reflexivity, embodiment, and social interaction which challenges imaginaries of mobile subjects underpinning standardized smart city transport policy prescriptions.

Collaborative economy-based business incubator model to increase the intention of Islamic entrepreneurship

The development of entrepreneurship education is intricately linked to individual interactions within their environment. This research aims to develop a collaborative economy-based business incubator model for fostering Islamic entrepreneurship intention. Employing a research and development methodology, the study involved 32 Pesantren youths at Taslim Pangalengan, focusing on a coffee-growing business unit. Data collection incorporated interviews, surveys, and limited group discussions. The analysis adopted a quantitative approach with various tests and qualitative descriptive analytics. Results revealed that changes in Islamic entrepreneurship behavior, seen as a social interaction process, are positively influenced by a collaborative economic system. Collaborative experiences contribute to strengthening the transformative aspects of thinking, behavior, and action, particularly in innovating and undertaking business risks. The business incubator emerges as a facilitator in shaping Islamic entrepreneurship intention. The study underscores the importance of enhancing comprehension of collaborative economics and business incubators to cultivate Islamic entrepreneurial intentions. It advocates for a broader perspective on entrepreneurial intentions grounded in Islamic principles within a collaboration-based business incubator model.

Incidental visual processing of spatiotemporal cues in communicative interactions: An fMRI investigation

Abstract The interpretation of social interactions between people is important in many daily situations. The coordination of the relative body movements between them may provide visual cues that observers use without attention to discriminate such social interactions from the actions of people acting independently of each other. Previous studies highlighted brain regions involved in the visual processing of interacting versus independently acting people, including posterior superior temporal sulcus, and areas of lateral occipitotemporal and parietal cortices. Unlike these previous studies, we focused on the incidental visual processing of social interactions; that is, the processing of the body movements outside the observers’ focus of attention. In the current study, we used functional imaging to measure brain activation while participants were presented with point-light dyads portraying communicative interactions or individual actions. However, their task was to discriminate the brightness of two crosses also on the screen. To investigate brain regions that may process the spatial and temporal relationships between the point-light displays, we either reversed the facing direction of one agent or spatially scrambled the local motion of the points. Incidental processing of communicative interactions elicited activation in right anterior STS only when the two agents were facing each other. Controlling for differences in local motion by subtracting brain activation to scrambled versions of the point-light displays revealed significant activation in parietal cortex for communicative interactions, as well as left amygdala and brain stem/cerebellum. Our results complement previous studies and suggest that additional brain regions may be recruited to incidentally process the spatial and temporal contingencies that distinguish people acting together from people acting individually.

Neural correlates of social exclusion and overinclusion in patients with borderline personality disorder: an fMRI study

BackgroundInterpersonal difficulties of patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) are closely related to rejection sensitivity. The aim of the present study was to gain further insight into the experience and cerebral processing of social interactions in patients with BPD by using fMRI during experimentally induced experiences of social exclusion, inclusion, and overinclusion.MethodsThe study involved 30 participants diagnosed with BPD (29 female and 1 male; age: M = 24.22, SD = 5.22) and 30 healthy controls (29 female and 1 male; age: M = 24.66, SD = 5.28) with no current or lifetime psychiatric diagnoses. In the fMRI session, all participants were asked to complete a Cyberball task that consisted of an alternating sequence of inclusion, exclusion, and overinclusion conditions.ResultsCompared to healthy controls, participants with BPD reported higher levels of inner tension and more unpleasant emotions across all experimental conditions. At the neural level, the participants with BPD showed lower recruitment of the left hippocampus in response to social exclusion (relative to the inclusion condition) than the healthy controls did. Lower recruitment of the left hippocampus in this contrast was associated with childhood maltreatment in patients with BPD. However, this difference was no longer significant when we added the covariate of hippocampal volume to the analysis. During social overinclusion (relative to the inclusion condition), we observed no significant differences in a group comparison of neural activation.ConclusionsThe results of our study suggest that patients with BPD experience more discomfort than do healthy controls during social interactions. Compared to healthy participants, patients with BPD reported more inner tension and unpleasant emotions, irrespective of the extent to which others included them in social interactions. At a neural level, the participants with BPD showed a lower recruitment of the left hippocampus in response to social exclusion than the healthy controls did. The reduced activation of this neural structure could be related to a history of childhood maltreatment and smaller hippocampal volume in patients with BPD.

Dissociable contributions of the hippocampus and orbitofrontal cortex to representing task space in a social context.

The hippocampus (HC) and the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) jointly encode a map-like representation of a task space to guide behavior. It remains unclear how the OFC and HC interact in encoding this map-like representation, though previous studies indicated that both regions have different functions. We acquired the functional magnetic resonance imaging data under a social navigation task in which participants interacted with characters in a two-dimensional "social space." We calculate the social relationships between the participants and characters and used a drift-diffusion model to capture the inner process of social interaction. Then we used multivoxel pattern analysis to explore the brain-behavior relationship. We found that (i) both the HC and the OFC showed higher activations during the selective trial than the narrative trial; (ii) the neural pattern of the right HC was associated with evidence accumulation during social interaction, and the pattern of the right lateral OFC was associated with the social relationship; (iii) the neural pattern of the HC can decode the participants choices, while the neural pattern of the OFC can decode the task information about trials. The study provided evidence for distinct roles of the HC and the OFC in encoding different information when representing social space.

Activities of Public Libraries in the Conditions of Transformations Caused by the Full-Scale Russian Military Aggression

The purpose of the article is to investigate and highlight the activities of public libraries, modern multimedia library spaces in the conditions of digitisation and adaptation of society to today's requirements. The research methodology is based on the application of general scientific methods of analysis, synthesis, system and socio-communicative approach. Scientific novelty lies in the study of the activities of public libraries and expanding their functionality in providing services in conditions of transformation and adaptation, responding to new challenges facing society and the state as a whole. The process of social and communicative interaction between libraries, modern multimedia spaces, and users in the present-day conditions is revealed. Conclusions. In the conditions of martial law, libraries are organically woven into the information society and its activities as social institutions. In accordance with the process of transformations, purpose, functions, and tasks that form a new public image, libraries have become providers of information and cultural and educational services with quality content for comprehensive development of society at the state and world levels. The system of library institutions of Ukraine forms an intelligent, intellectual, creative, cultural society, introducing the latest services into its activities, using new information resources, disseminating objective information, counteracting manipulation and information warfare. Libraries are powerful socio-cultural, scientific and information centres that have become the foundation of society's information base, an important social tool for the further development of informatisation and ensuring access to all categories of users to information resources, technologies, education, and culture for growth and self-improvement. From the point of view of modern trends, in the conditions of martial law, we are convinced of the powerful capabilities and resources of libraries to meet the educational, informational, communication, cultural and leisure needs of users. Where do differences in theory of mind development come from? An agent-based model of social interaction and theory of mind

IntroductionWhere do individual differences in theory of mind (ToM) development come from? This is an open-ended issue in developmental psychology. Correlational research suggests social interaction as a cause. However, causal experiments controlling children's extended, real-life social interactions are impractical and unethical, so the links between social interaction and ToM remain only indirectly demonstrated. To shed light on how social interaction, in different degrees and forms, may influence ToM development, we conducted computational experiments using agent-based modeling.MethodsTo begin with, we simulated agents (hypothetically, children) and assigned them to 10 groups, where each group was manipulated to allow a different amount of social interaction, from 1 to 10. Within each group, agents randomly roamed and encountered one another and then interacted. If these interactions continued long enough, agents' ToM probabilistically improved.ResultsAs expected, results showed that the amount of social interaction strongly influenced how fast agents developed ToM, where more social interaction led to more rapid development. Given this confirmation of the assumed link, we more focally explored how other factors—such as having a prior, established social network or agents' network centrality—could influence the social interaction-ToM link. Then, we tested our model against real-world data from 84 deaf children and showed that our modeling results could explain the social interaction-ToM link observed in deaf children.DiscussionThese demonstrations illustrate how individual differences in ToM development may emerge and offer an explanation specifying a crucial mechanism for how all humans achieve ToM—faster or with delay—through processes of social interaction.

Social metacognition drives willingness to commit.

Showing or telling others that we are committed to cooperate with them can boost social cooperation. But what makes us willing to signal our cooperativeness, when it is costly to do so? In two experiments, we tested the hypothesis that agents engage in social commitments if their subjective confidence in predicting the interaction partner's behavior is low. In Experiment 1 (preregistered), 48 participants played a prisoner's dilemma game where they could signal their intentions to their co-player by enduring a monetary cost. As hypothesized, low confidence in one's prediction of the co-player's intentions was associated with a higher willingness to engage in costly commitment. In Experiment 2 (31 participants), we replicate these findings and moreover provide causal evidence that experimentally lowering the predictability of others' actions (and thereby confidence in these predictions) motivates commitment decisions. Finally, across both experiments, we show that participants possess and demonstrate metacognitive access to the accuracy of their mentalizing processes. Taken together, our findings shed light on the importance of confidence representations and metacognitive processes in social interactions. Social interaction is important in social life, including for the elderly. With the establishment of good social interaction, it will make the elderly feel at home and comfortable living in an elderly home. However, if the social interaction between the elderly, caregivers and companions is not good, it will create a sense of competition and tend to experience sadness in the elderly. The purpose of this research is to find out how the process of social interaction is formed between fellow elderly, caregivers, and companions at the Panti Lansia Binjai and the inhibiting factors of social interaction among fellow elderly, caregivers and companions. This study used a q ualitative research method with a descriptive approach. In collecting data using direct observation methods, interviews and documentation. The data analysis techniques used are data reduction, data display and conclusion. The research results obtained are social interaction processes, namely associative processes in the form of cooperation, accommodation and assimilation and dissociative processes in the form of competition, conflict and quarrels. The social interactions that occur between the elderly, caregivers and companions at the Panti Lansia Binjai can be seen through the establishment of communication in the form of conversation, mutual understanding, cooperation, openness and empathy, mutual support/motivation, having a positive feeling and a sense of similarity with others, where it is an indicator of social interaction.

Effectiveness of Group Guidance and Discussion Techniques and Its Effect on Level Social Interaction of Mosque Youth

This article explains the effectiveness of group guidance and discussion techniques and their influence on the level of social interaction among mosque youth.As social beings in the community, teenagers always carry out a process of social interaction with fellow individuals and other groups in community life. However, the ability to interact among adolescents is still low and some even have difficulty adjusting to social interactions. This research is a quantitative study using the pre-experimental design method, type one group pretest-posttest (preliminary test, final test of a single group). The total population was 12 mosque teenagers, because this research was conducted on teenagers from the Nurul Iman Pasirpengaraian mosque. Data were collected using questionnaires and observations and using a total item correlation limit of rix 0.25 as the item selection criterion. Assessment analysis can be obtained from the results of calculating pretest and posttest scores. The acquisition of pretest and posttest scores is carried out in several stages. The initial stage is the pretest activity, and the final stage is the posttest activity. The results of this study indicate that the level of social interaction among adolescents at the Nurul Iman mosque, before being given treatment, is still classified as in the low category which is in the interval range 47 to 56. Then it has increased from 47.58 to 79.25, which means that group guidance and discussion techniques have an effect on adolescent social interactions.

Interaksi Sosial dan Toleransi di Kampung Juuk Manis di Karangasem Serta Manfaatnya Bagi Kehidupan Masyarakat Multikultur

Historically Juuk Manis Village was one of the 12 layers of settlements that surrounded Puri Karangasem as the center of government at that time. Social interaction and tolerance in Juuk Manis and its benefits for multicultural society are the focus of this study. From the results of research in the Karangasem village, especially in Juuk Manis, the population, apart from Balinese ethnicity who are Hindus, also have ethnic Sasak who are Muslims. The problem: First, how is the process of social interaction? Second, what are the forms of social interaction and tolerance and their benefits for the life of a multicultural society? One of the concepts currently being developed is the concept of multiculturalism. The multiculturalism approach is an alternative to preventing conflict in a society that is diverse in ethnicity, culture and religion. The point is the need for compromise and tolerance in diversity. The method used is the historical method, supported by the theory of hegemony. The results of this study show various forms of tolerance and are beneficial to the life of a multicultural society.

Penguatan Profil Pelajar Pancasila Melalui Tradisi Gropyokan Iwak Sebagai Sumber Belajar IPS

The aims to find out the procession of the Gropyokan Iwak tradition and the dimensions of Pancasila student profiles in the Gropyokan Iwak tradition as social studies learning resources. The problem is focused on the Gropyokan Iwak Guna tradition as a social studies learning resource in schools to strengthen the Profil Pelajar Pancasila. The data were collected through in-depth interviews and documentation and were analyzed qualitatively. This study concludes that the Gropyokan Iwak procession is carried out during the dry season which begins with a joint prayer while asking permission led by a religious leader. The character dimensions of Pancasila student profiles in the Gropyokan Iwak tradition can be integrated into social studies learning materials integrated thematically of the social life of the community.
