Cultural texts and intercultural competence in Russian as a foreign language lessons for medical-biological students

The aim of the research is to demonstrate the significance of using texts of cultural content in Russian as a foreign language (RFL) lessons. The subject of the article is the texts about the Russian scientists M.V. Lomonosov and I.P. Pavlov, extracted from basic RFL textbooks for students of a medical-biological profile in higher education. The authors of the article focus on the process of intercultural communication, which contributes to the formation of linguistic and cultural competence among foreign students in RFL lessons. The role of these texts in the formation of students' sociocultural competence is analyzed. The methodology of the work includes comprehensive hermeneutic analysis of texts of cultural content dedicated to the activities of Russian scientists Lomonosov and Pavlov, using biographical commentary and historical context. The results of the research show that the proposed teaching techniques in the context of intercultural learning contribute to the effectiveness of language learning.

A Study on the Enhancement of English Proficiency of Contemporary College Students by Intercultural Communication in the Background of the Internet

Abstract The process of English learning is closely related to the process of intercultural communication. This paper addresses the problem of quantifying the intercultural communication ability of college students, designs the dimensions of intercultural competence, establishes the factor indicators of intercultural competence, and constructs a fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method for the assessment of intercultural competence. A regression model is created to investigate the correlation between achievement and English proficiency. The nonparametric model of principal component analysis is used to optimize the problem of the stratification effect of general local linear regression, and the principal component-based local linear regression method (PC-LLR) is proposed. The second-year undergraduate students of different majors in X university were selected as the research subjects, and an overall assessment of intercultural communication competence was made to explore the differences among different student groups. Based on the correlation analysis between intercultural competence and English proficiency, PC-LLR regression analysis was launched. The Beta value interval of the regression was [0.0535, 5.0292], all of which were positive, and the four variables of knowledge, attitude, skill, and awareness had a positive predictive effect on the dependent variable. Intercultural knowledge has a relatively high Beta value, which makes it a strong predictor of English proficiency.

 Cultural diversity gave birth to many different cultures in Bengkulu Province, one of which is in Kedataran Village, Maje District, Kaur Regency. In the communication process between people of different cultures, a more comprehensive understanding is needed so that it does not become a conflict. This underlies the research conducted in Kedataran Village, with the aim of describing the intercultural communication process that occurs between indigenous people and transmigration communities in this area. This type of research is field research with a qualitative approach. Data collection techniques were interviews with key and main informants, as well as observation and documentation. This research uses the theory of intercultural communication (Ting-Toomey, 1985) which includes symbolic exchange, proces, different cultural communities, interactive situation, negotiate shared meanings, and societal embedded system. Based on the results of research and data analysis, it is concluded that 1) the use of intercultural communication symbols in Kedataran Village is the language used, namely Kaur, Javanese, and Indonesian, 2) although there are cultural differences but people are able to understand each other so that the communication process is quite harmonious, 3) different cultural communities between people coexist by applying mutual tolerance and mutual respect for differences, 4) interactive situations of intercultural communication during weddings, official village forums, and social activities, 5) negotiation of meaning is related to the substance of the issues conveyed such as conflicts due to differences in viewpoints and assessments of other cultures, 6) systems embedded in society shape the process as well as the results of intercultural encounters between indigenous and transmigration communities.
 
 
 

Intercultural Learning Through a Chinese-American Education-themed Virtual Exchange Project

This study reports on the results of an 8-week virtual exchange project, in which Chinese and American students compared Chinese and American education via videoconferencing and text messaging. The final reflection journals were collected and analyzed at the end of the project. The results showed that, according to Byram’s intercultural competence model, learners developed the interest in knowing other people’s way of life and introducing one’s own culture to others, ability to change perspective, knowledge about one’s own and other’s culture for intercultural communication, and knowledge about the intercultural communication process. Besides, the students have shown positive attitudes towards this learning project due to the theme of education which is the domain of their future careers.

Komunikasi Antarbudaya Masyarakat Pendatang Di Pulau Sebatik Perbatasan Indonesia-Malaysia

This study on intercultural communication of migrant communities on Sebatik Island on the Indonesia-Malaysia border examines communication practices between Javanese, Bugis, and Timorese migrants. Using a qualitative approach and collecting data from in-depth interviews and participatory observations, the study found that the process of intercultural communication is created through economic and cultural arenas. Communication in the Javanese economic arena with the Bugis can be seen from the businesses carried out together, such as culinary, hospitality, supermarket businesses and at the same time recruiting Javanese and Bugis as employees of their businesses. In the cultural arena, intercultural communication can be seen from the phenomenon of intermarriage which allows the creation of perceptual similarities between them. Communication in the Timorese economic arena with the Bugis is seen in the vegetable business network which is the main source of income for the Timorese and the recruitment of Timorese as assistants in the Bugis household. Communication in the cultural arena between Timorese and Bugis is also seen in terms of mixed marriages as well as between Javanese and Bugis. Through the economic and cultural arena, there is a change in the mindset of some people which has implications for the creation of a more dynamic and harmonious community condition in the context of communication of border communities with various differences in culture, customs, languages, and religions.

Hermeneutics and comparative pedagogy.Language as material and powerful tool for assigning meanings, understanding, and transforming information

Language and the processes of understanding the meaning of the concepts we use are of particular interest to scholars of comparative pedagogy, intercultural pedagogy, and other fields dealing with intercultural communication processes. It is also evident that the methodology of comparative pedagogy must include considering the process of understanding, for it is not possible to describe the solutions used in education without understanding the strategies that had led to a certain state of affairs. The article discusses the issue of understanding the meanings of concepts as a necessary methodological procedure of comparative pedagogy. It provides examples of theoretical perspectives on the importance of language as a tool we use to communicate, store and transform information. The article also shows the link between culture and the vocabulary and pragmatics of language and the extra-linguistic possibilities of understanding meanings.

Diaconia and Interreligious Cooperation in Switzerland

One of the most important areas of tension for diaconia in the Western European, German-speaking context is the demands of an interreligious and plural society. The social challenges to churches with their congregations and parishes, diaconal organizations, and the state with its social institutions are complex. This article deals with religious layers of social transformations that shape helping actions. It focuses on innovative projects in the field of spiritual care and diaconia that created new spaces of diaconal practice in the last ten years in the Canton of Zurich and Switzerland. Specifically, the process of accrediting the first imam at the University Hospital in Zurich, the employment of chaplains of Muslim and Jewish faith in the Swiss Army, and the training of Muslim chaplains in the Canton of Zurich are presented. On the one hand, the aim is to adequately define the relationship between diaconia and spiritual care in a pluralistic society. On the other hand, interreligious cooperation is analyzed as a process of intercultural communication and transcultural practice. From this, theses for prospective, innovative, and well-founded interreligious cooperation in diaconia can be gained, which can be further developed and discussed in other European and global contexts.

SUNDA AND CIREBON LANGUAGE INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION PROCESS IN EARLY CHILDREN'S ENVIRONMENT

ABSTRACT
 This study aims to determine how the intercultural communication process in the Early Childhood Education (PAUD) Learning Group (KB) environment, as well as knowing what are the factors that hinder it. The location of this research in Beber Village, Beber District, Cirebon Regency, is a place that borders Kuningan Regency with different cultural backgrounds. Descriptive qualitative. The aim is to describe the facts that have been found systematically, actually and factually, which views that only researchers are truly free and different outside the target research environment, and produce objective conclusions.
 This research focuses on how the communication process and what are the factors of communication barriers that exist in the PAUD environment.
 The results of the research in the intercultural communication process that occurs in the An Nur Early Childhood Education Learning Group (KB PAUD) environment are:
 
 Communication is usually done through the adaptation stage first. If communication is blocked or deadlocked due to language differences, they use Indonesian as a 'unifying' bridge so that communication can be more effective and the message conveyed as desired.
 Students of KB PAUD An Nur in their interactions with peers use a mixed language of Sundanese and Cirebon.
 Teachers who teach at KB PAUD An Nur when teaching in class use Indonesian as the language of instruction. But when interacting informally follow the language style of their students, Sundanese and Cirebon language.
 
 4.Communication that occurs in the environment of KB PAUD An Nur, as well as in general in Beber Village, Beber Sub-district experienced a mixture (acculturation) of Javanese culture Cirebon and Sunda Kuningan so that the use of language is unique.
 5.The mingling of language and culture in the educational environment makes one of the riches in the cultural repertoire in Indonesia, especially in the development of Islamic education-based communities.

A comparative study of intercultural sensitivity among postgraduates majoring in International Chinese Education in China context

Based on a survey sample of 435 China postgraduates majoring in International Chinese Education with different undergraduate English learning experience, the research attempted to find out how five elements proposed by Chen & Starosta (2000), interacted or influenced with each other. Those five elements incorporated in Intercultural Communication Competence Scale (ICCS), developed by Chen & Starosta (2000), are interaction engagement, respect for cultural differences, interaction confidence, interaction enjoyment and interaction attentiveness. The survey results from the multiple regression charts demonstrated that the elements composed of intercultural sensitivity actually interacted or influenced interactants’ actual intercultural communication process.

FORMATION OF NATIONAL VALUE ORIENTATIONS OF STUDENTS IN THE AXIOLINGUISTIC ASPECT

Turning of linguistics to the anthropogenic paradigm in recent decades has led to a spread of interdisciplinary humanitarian studies based on «Man-World-Language», «Man-language-Cognition», and «Man-Language-Culture» and «Man-Language-Value» triads. A new scientific paradigm aimed at describing the manifestation of worldview concepts in language, as the most important achievements of human civilization, has contributed to the formation of complex branches of linguistics. The anthropocentric principle of mastering national values has been widely implemented in teaching axiolinguistics to students. Considering the issues of axiolinguistics at higher education institutions is a priority in identifying and explaining the peculiarities of the linguistic image of the world and the national mentality that forms national worldview, national values of an individual, and the necessary degree of communicative activity by explaining the processes of intercultural communication and historical relationship between language and ethnos. To introduce successfully national values into the content of the course of axiolinguistics at universities, it is necessary to consider axiological concepts as a whole semantic system and to study the complex of the entire language (words, phrases, phraseological units, proverbs, names of mythical concepts, texts). As a result, a student will develop the skills to treat national culture and language as a part of human culture, to evaluate the real life around them in terms of national values. Komunikasi Antarbudaya Etnis Tionghoa Dan Pribumi Di Pasar Cinde Palembang

This study discusses the process of intercultural communication between the Chinese and indigenous ethnic groups, and the factors that influence the process of intercultural communication between the Chinese and indigenous ethnic groups at Pasar Cinde Palembang. This study used a descriptive qualitative research method, in which the data collection was carried out by observation, interviews and documentation obtained from informants. by using the theory of intercultural communication which emphasizes that intercultural communication occurs when the communicator and communicant come from different cultures and social interactions. The results of this study indicate that: 1. the process of intercultural communication between ethnic Chinese and natives at Pasar Cinde Palembang is running effectively. In its implementation found the existence of primary and secondary communication. The form of communication is interpersonal communication that occurs every day, both between traders and traders with buyers. 2. Factors that influence the process of intercultural communication between Chinese and indigenous ethnicities are supporting factors such as language acquisition, means of communication, thinking skills, and mutual respect, and there are inhibiting factors, namely stereotypes, prejudice, and language which can be handled well by the Chinese ethnicity and native.

A flow that comes when we’re talking: water metaphors for exploring intercultural communication during early childhood assessment interactions in a Yolŋu (First Nations Australian) community

ABSTRACT Culture mediates how all people think and communicate and intercultural communication skills are required for effective collaboration. This study (2017–2021) explored intercultural communication with 40 participants in one very remote First Nations Australian community in Northern Australia. We explored the perspectives of both Yolŋu (First Nations Australian people from North-East Arnhem Land) and Balanda (non-Indigenous people, in this case Australian) on interactions during early childhood assessments of Yolŋu children (0–6 years). Our intercultural research team used a culturally responsive form of video-reflexive ethnography, a Yolŋu approach to in-depth discussion and collaborative analysis. In this article, we explore nine intercultural communication processes that were recognized and enacted by study participants. Each process is represented by a metaphor drawn from water traveling in North-East Arnhem Land. We share these processes so that others may consider exploring their relevance in other intercultural communication contexts.

INTERPRETTING INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION APPROACH OF INDONESIAN DIASPORA IN TURKIYE

The understanding of the importance of intercultural communication carried out by the Indonesian Diaspora in Turkiye can provide an accurate picture of the actual conditions of the processes that occur in intercultural communication between Indonesian culture and Turkish culture. Qualitative descriptive research in this research was carried out with in-depth interviews with three respondents who were in Turkiye. Each represented the Indonesian diaspora in the scope of Government, namely the Cultural Attaché of the Republic of Indonesia, then the Indonesian Student Association in Turkiye, and Indonesian workers who were active in Turkiye. Research reveals that the pattern of the Indonesian diaspora in conducting intercultural communication is by understanding each other between two or more cultures and establishing close relationships in the work environment, study environment, to the social and Government environment, including an approach with adaptability to socializing styles, culinary, to the artistic attractions of each culture. With this understanding and adaptation attitude, it turns out that the Indonesian diaspora also opens up opportunities to become bridging agents in the exchange of two cultures, Indonesia and Turkiye, and shows the occurrence of a two-way intercultural communication process.

Can Translation Evolve? Translation Errors of Chinese-to-English Tourism Promotional Materials from Eco-Translatology Perspectives

Chinese tourism has been revised since the Covid-19 quarantine policy was abolished. Tourism institutions are going to continue to attract inbound and international tourists by using tourism promotional materials. Tourism commonly seems like an intercultural communication process. Therefore, translating Chinese tourism promotional materials into English with good quality should be highlighted, such as leaflets, brochures, websites, etc. However, while promotional discourse in the tourism industry has been developed for many years, previous studies indicated that some English translations of tourism promotional materials fail to achieve very promotional efficacy, or worse, leave a negative impression on international tourists. This paper aims to focus on analyzing the translation errors of tourism promotional materials and improve them from Eco-translatology perspective, namely Three-dimensional Transformation. Finally, the findings argue that the essential reason for the translation errors is ascribed to the lack of persuasive tourism skills and the non-consideration of Anglophone tourists’ characteristics.

Nhaltjan dhu ḻarrum ga dharaŋan dhuḏi-dhäwuw ŋunhi limurr dhu gumurrbunanhamirr ga waŋanhamirr, Yolŋu ga Balanda: how we come together to explore and understand the deeper story of intercultural communication in a Yolŋu (First Nations Australian) community

This study explored intercultural communication from the perspectives of partners from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds. We used a culturally responsive form of video-reflexive ethnography to study intercultural communication processes between Yolŋu, pronounced Yolngu (First Nations people from the region that is now called North-East Arnhem Land, Northern Territory, Australia) and Balanda (non-Indigenous people). Yolŋu and Balanda researchers worked collaboratively throughout the study (2017–2021). In a very remote Yolŋu community in northern Australia, five early childhood assessment interactions were recorded and analysed by the 40 Yolŋu and Balanda participants. Researchers analysed data collaboratively using an approach aligned with constructivist grounded theory. We connected key research findings about intercultural communication processes to a place-based metaphor which foregrounds Yolŋu cultural knowledge and encourages reflection on deeper ways of thinking about how we connect, collaborate and communicate interculturally.

THEORETICAL PREREQUISITES FOR FORMING INTERCULTURAL COMPETENCE OF FUTURE OFFICERS OF COMBAT AND OPERATIONAL SUPPORT

The article defines the essence of the concepts of language and culture, which are important for the process of intercultural communication of combat and operational support specialists, as well as for the process of forming their intercultural competence. Language performs an expressive function and is a universal means for expressing the inner world of a person. Culture preserves certain values and depends on the interpretation of the environment by the participants of communication. Based on the studies of prominent scientists an analysis of theories of language communication, speech acts (the operations that provide them and their main classes) and speech genres (in particular, its linguistic essence and nature). The theory of linguistic personality (its main varieties) and the theory of dialogue of cultures are reflected. The totality of these theories forms the basis for the process of forming intercultural competence in the mentioned specialists. Intercultural competence of future combat and operational support specialists is defined as a set of knowledge abilities and skills that help future military specialists to effectively conduct their professional activities and freely communicate with partners of other cultures under conditions of international integration and mutual understanding and respect. The components of intercultural competence of future specialists of combat operational support appropriate knowledge, abilities, skills, namely: language knowledge: a)lexical, grammar, spelling; multicultural knowledge; knowledge of verbal and nonverbal, communicative rules of behavior; cognitive knowledge and skills; ability to dialogue with representatives of other cultures; ability to control their actions in communication, in particular, the ability to overcome fear; the ability to observe the rules of etiquette.

In the context of globalization, millions of people belonging to different cultures and ethnic groups have been given the opportunity to move freely around the world and engage in cultural exchanges with other peoples. In the largest cities of the world, the number of migrants from foreign countries is constantly increasing, and along with this the number of problems is increasing. The number of migrants in the world amounted to 272 million people, or 3.5% of the world’s population. By 2050, this figure could reach 400 million (UN DESA Report, 2019 https://www.un.org/ru/desa). These migrations often lead to misunderstandings, and sometimes to conflict between representatives of the two cultures. According to J. Berry (1997), in the period when some countries are striving for political and economic integration, while others, on the contrary, for independence, the situation of cultural interaction becomes especially acute. Therefore, scholars and individuals who somehow come into contact with the process of intercultural communication, attach special importance to the study of these processes, one of which is acculturation. This article examines the acculturation process of Kazakhs living in the United States, gives the concept of such forms of acculturation as segregation, assimilation, integration and marginalization.

ОСОБЛИВОСТІ ЗАСВОЄННЯ ІТАЛІЙСЬКОЇ МОВИ В КУЛЬТУРНОМУ СЕРЕДОВИЩІ ЇЇ НОСІЇВ

The article touches upon the issue of integration of foreigners into another language and cultural environment on the example of Ukrainians who come to Italy for work. The theoretical basis of the article is works by Ukrainian and foreign scholars on linguistic and culture studies, psycholinguistics, psychology, methods of acquiring a foreign language, translation studies. Besides, the focus has been upon close interrelation between the knowledge of a foreign language and the ability to understand and adapt to a new culture and mentality. On the basis of the modern relevant theories the process of learning a foreign language is compared with acquisition of a native language by a child. The practical basis of the article is the author’s observations of the process of interlanguage and intercultural communication between Italians and Ukrainians in different everyday situations and the quality of acquisition of the Italian language and culture by the latter. In this research the everyday communicative situations include family and interpersonal relations, the spheres of cooking and housekeeping, the attitude to religion and work. With the help of illustrative examples from real communication the article highlights a certain similarity between Italian and Ukrainian characters and world perception, and the absence of considerable differences between the Italian and Ukrainian language systems, which facilitates a fast integration of Ukrainians into the Italian language and cultural space. Also, for illustration, we have highlighted phonetic, lexical, and grammar parallels between the Italian and Ukrainian languages. Ukrainians who have lived in Italy for quite a long time are fluent enough in the Italian language. However, if they do not approach studying of the language professionally their speech lacks grammatical correctness and vocabulary diversity. Hence, we have made conclusion that just staying in a foreign environment is not sufficient for a high-standard command of a language. For this purpose, one needs to make corresponding strong-willed efforts and to apply the language on all the levels of communication. At the end of the article we have singled out a range of issues for further research and development of the aforementioned topic.

CHARACTERİSTİC FEATURES OF İNTERCULTURAL COMMUNİCATİON

Intercultural communication is the interaction of carriers of different cultures. Man is not the only bearer of culture, biologists and psychologists argue that some animals (in particular, great apes) are able to develop and transmit culture. Intercultural communication (ICC) is a special section of the general theory of communication, which studies – in theoretical and practical terms – the communicative interaction of representatives of different cultures. This teaching aid is intended to acquaint students with the basics of the theory of intercultural communication as a special field of scientific knowledge, as well as with the possibilities of applying this theory in real communication practice. Thus, different animal populations are carriers of different cultures, and the interaction of these groups can also be called intercultural communication. The theory of intercultural communication (ICC), of course, is not concerned with the study of the analysis of animal communication. It is important however, to understand that the ICC is a very ancient phenomenon it appeared simultaneously with the formation of what we call different cultures. The theory of intercultural communication is a discipline that describes the process of intercultural communication, the conditions for its implementation, possible difficulties and causes of communication failures. This article will consider the concept of intercultural communication, key features of the theory of intercultural communication, interdisciplinary connections, the history of this discipline, the scope of knowledge from the field of intercultural communication. However, the theory of ICC as an independent scientific discipline arose quite recently, in the middle of the 20th century. Interest in studying the processes of intercultural communication, in their theoretical understanding arose primarily under the influence of globalization. Transnational corporations are being created, the tourism industry is developing, migration processes are intensifying, more and more people are entering into interethnic marriages, and the adoption of children from other countries is becoming more and more popular.
