FEATURES OF IDENTITY TRANSFORMATION IN MIDDLE-AGED CODEPENDENT WOMEN

The article is devoted to the study of the peculiarities of identity transformation in middle-aged codependent women. It was determined that the process of identity transformation in a codependent personality during the middle age crisis represents the discovery of self-worth, uniqueness, the formation of psychological immunity, and coherence. The aim of the study is to determine the effectiveness of the identity transformation program for middle-aged codependent women. The model of identity transformation of codependent middle-aged women is presented, which includes criteria for the effectiveness of program implementation, levels of psychological influence (motivational, cognitive, emotional, behavioral, physical), social-psychological transformation technology, stages of program implementation (diagnostic, resource, psychotherapeutic, summative or reflective). The purpose and tasks of the identity transformation program for middle-aged codependent women are defined. On the basis of the conducted research, it was established that as a result of approbation of the program, positive results of the identity transformation of middle-aged women of the experimental group were found on all identity scales, except for the «Material Self».Keywords: personality, personality development, integral identity, self-regulation, coherence, bodily locus of control, psychocorrection, early maladaptiv eschemas.

Transformation of Identity for Artists Joining Musawarah Discussion Community

Objective: This study aims to explore the identity transformation process undergone by artists who choose to shift their lifestyles and join Musawarah, a Young Person's Discussion Community promoting a peaceful, loving, and spiritually blessed way of life.
 
 Theoretical framework: The study identifies key stages in the identity transformation process. The study identifies a six-stage process, encompassing pre-transfer, stimulation, self-isolation, self-doubt, transfer, and post-transfer, as artists decide to make the shift.
 
 Method: The research is grounded in a qualitative approach, employing in-depth interviews to collect data from 19 male and 6 female artists from middle-class backgrounds who have undergone this transformation.
 
 Results and conclusion: The findings reveal that artists, influenced by the concept of hijrah, experience a Conversion-Reversion process, returning to their pre-artist identity with a renewed commitment to their religious beliefs. The transformation is an ongoing journey toward self-awareness and a more fulfilling life.
 
 Originality/value: This research contributes to the understanding of identity transformation among artists, shedding light on the impact of religious shifts on their lifestyles and public personas. The study highlights the emergence of a trend where artists become influential figures in spreading religious messages and shaping societal norms, challenging the conventional perceptions of the entertainment industry.

Defining the concept of identity of national vocational education system

Introduction. Geopolitical, social and economic disasters of all over the world space cause the crisis of identity, which is fixed by the researchers of social and humanitarian sciences. The controversial nature of the process of internationalization of the vocational education system and its striving to keep in safety the traditional values of education are articulated. This process gives close attention not only on studying the problems of creating conditions to form of identity by means of the educational space of the country, but also understanding the phenomenon of identity of the national education system. Purpose setting. The aim of the article is the defining of some essential features, which can explain the concept of the identity of national vocational education system.Methodology and methods of the study. The methods of the research are the analysis of scientific literature, comparative analysis of proposed approaches, integration and synthesis for defining identity kinds and features of the identity of national vocational education system.Results. Some essential features of identity related to contemporary information age are defined. Among them are authenticity and simulativeness, multiplicity, dynamism, givenness and choice, axiology, recombination. Identity can be described as a form of predication of existence and the way of social understanding. The factors of globalization and regionalization have an influence on the identity transformation process. The ideological and civilization identity are described for better understanding the essence of the identity of national vocational education system.Conclusion. Determination of essential features of the identity of national vocational education system and studying of the processes of its formation and transformation indicate the domination of value components of the process. It can be used to explain the risks of transferring practices from foreign educational systems to national education system.

Exploring Contradiction‐Driven Language Teacher Identity Transformation During Curriculum Reforms: A Chinese Tale

AbstractThe existing literature in TESOL has revealed the multilayered, dynamic, and situated nature of teacher identity, but how language teachers construct their identities during curriculum reforms receives relatively limited attention, particularly in the context of teaching English for specific purposes (ESP). Theoretically anchored by the notion of contradiction in activity theory, this study investigates an ESP teacher's identity transformation in a Chinese university. Drawing on data from semi‐structured interviews, classroom observations, and artifacts (policy documents and course materials), the findings reveal that the participant constructed her identities including “a skiff drifting in the dark,” “an optimistic warrior,” and “a nonconformist” through the teaching reform mediated by the corporatized culture and accountability system in higher education. The process of identity transformation was accompanied by her identity‐driven efforts to resolve various contradictions and seek the delicate equilibrium between her agency and object‐oriented reform. The study offers practical recommendations on teacher development and curriculum reforms for both language teachers and other stakeholders (e.g., teacher educators and school leaders) in different educational contexts.

The Problem of Identity in Critical Studies of Postcolonial Literature

The article discusses Russian scholars’ approaches to studying the fluid nature of national identity in postcolonial writing. The key factor uniting the vast research area of postcolonial literature is the writers’ intention to project the process of identity transformation, consolidate and review identity shifts caused by interaction of cultures. The analysis of the data suggests that researchers share a common objective of identifying the influence of a single historical and cultural background of colonization and interaction of two cultures within a united cultural space on the writers’ self-identity and writing. Researchers focus on the literary interpretations of the concept of national identity, extent of involvement of a particular ethnic group in the process of colonization, dual nature of hybrid cultural space and linguistic presentation of identity in postcolonial culture. The authors of the article draw a conclusion that the problem of self-identity is a relevant and promising issue in Russian literary research.

Transformation of a Literary Character’s Identity in the Artistic Mirror of Buryat Novels: from Soviet to Рost-Soviet

In this article, the authors make an attempt based on an analysis from the point of view of neo-historicism to look again at the history of the development of Buryat novels, to analyze the features of constructing the identity of the main characters in works written by famous Buryat writers at different historical stages. The relevance is due to the absence of scientific works devoted to identifying the transformation of the identity of literary characters under the influence of historical eras. The purpose of this article is also to study the influence of various historical contexts on the work of writers in order to find out the pattern of manifestation of the ethnic identity of the Buryats in the historically determined dynamics of social development and their artistic embodiment. The most famous novels by Buryat writers of the 20th century served as the material for the study. Being a significant genre of Buryat literature, the novel has a natural connection with history since its inception, which makes it another channel for understanding the influence of the historical process on the identity of the Buryats. The authors analyze Buryat novels, which are an artistic medium for Buryat writers, with which they can write about national identity. Buryat novels are influenced by the social and historical environment and have features at different stages of history. Historical events and characters depicted in Buryat novels reflected the process of identity transformation in artistic form. The authors come to the conclusion that the identity of the heroes goes through stages from the desire for unification under the influence of Soviet ideology to the formation of a new identity of a USSR citizen, and to the conclusion about the revival of ethnic identity at a new stage. The research perspectives include the study of the transformation of identity in other genres of Buryat literature.

Transformative Leadership Journeys: Learning and Identity of University Leaders of Engaged Scholarship

University-community engagement (UCE) researchers have developed taxonomies, frameworks and practices for the field, but have not deeply considered issues of social, cultural, political, geographical and economic dimensions of theory and practice in institutions and their communities, including faculty, staff, and senior leadership. These dimensions may include institutional and personal history, such as religious affiliations; epistemology; forms of leadership; power structures; and social locations, among others. These cultural forms are reflected in institutional discourse, for example the narratives of engagement actors, and can be expressed in a variety of cultural artifacts including personal stories of praxis. Leading community engagement efforts is a transformative values-driven activity; we believe that transformative leadership is a process of continual, transformative learning, which is fundamentally a process of identity transformation. The narratives of six institutional leaders of community-engaged scholarship (CES) in higher education are examined for how their various scholarly and professional identities have developed through transformative learning processes), revealing themes of serendipity, moral coherence, values congruence, agentic change, moral courage, authenticity, relational practice and generativity that integrate these stories.

Process and Becoming: Spatiality and Carceral Identities

This paper theorizes that a process of identity transformation occurs when individuals enter prisons, whereby individuals become prisoners. I investigate how this identity transformation occurs through interaction with the prison’s architectural design. Prisons are posited as locations of purposeful spatial organization whose design evokes particular performances from those within and outside, and which actively contributes to the creation of the prisoner identity. This investigation reveals a carceral power at work which renders prisons sites of articulated and detailed control that exist within a broader set of institutional practices and relations of power aimed at the transformation of individuals. This discussion critically engages with the broader purpose of the prison: while prisons are meant to rehabilitate and reform prisoners, the structured architecture of the prison conflicts with this objective.

Identity Transformation Through Substance Use Disorder Recovery: Introducing the Six Stage Model

Narratives of substance use disorder recovery experience can provide useful qualitative conceptual categories and novel theories about the way in which recovery is experienced by individuals. This information can better inform definitions, concepts, and supports for recovery processes. The current study reviewed 30 written personal recovery biographies which were contained within student applications to the collegiate recovery program housed in the Center for Young Adult Addiction and Recovery at Kennesaw State University. Using grounded theory methodology, common benchmarks, or topographic recovery features were revealed involving the evolution of identity as an inter-negotiated process throughout the addiction and recovery biographies (Charmaz, 2008; Glaser & Strauss, 2017). From this, a six-stage theory model of recovery identity is formulated and explored. The biographies contained accounts from pre-substance use through the full embracement of a recovery identity. This model may help to serve recovery program managers to classify incoming individuals, identify and address needs, and facilitate innovative programming to meet such needs as they relate to the identity transformation process.

“We Are the Women Our Parents Warned Us Against:” Identity Reconstruction and the Re‐Imagining of Gender After High‐Cost Religious Disaffiliation

This paper examines the identity work of women undergoing high‐cost religious disaffiliation by examining the exit experiences of members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter‐day Saint (LDS, Mormon). Previous research into religious change has not fully engaged with the extensive identity work that exiters do as they leave these groups. I propose a stage model of religious exit identity development to expand upon the process of identity transformation during and after high‐cost religious exit. Additionally, I examine how the gender regimes of high‐cost‐religions result in different pathways out and experiences during disaffiliation for women and men. Though constructed to describe high‐cost religious exits, this model may also be helpful in understanding other “high‐cost” exits. A video abstract is available at https://youtu.be/hup3KFXvODs.

Students as Partners: A New Ethos for the Transformation of Teacher and Student Identities in Chinese Higher Education

Engaging students as partners (SaP) in teaching and learning is a growing arena of practice that shapes the mutually beneficial student-teacher relationship. Redefining student-teacher identities in pedagogical practice is one of the key implications of SaP. In the past decade, Chinese higher education institutions have paid increasing attention to student-centred pedagogies. Understanding and investigating new interpretations of student-teacher identities underpins the shift toward such pedagogical practices. In this theoretical discussion paper, based on the recent trends associated with Chinese higher education reform efforts revealed by large-scale and systematic survey results, we interrogate the concept of Chinese student-teacher identities as a learning partnership by drawing on the theorisations of SaP. Our intention is to contribute to the ongoing process of identity transformation within Chinese higher education. By calling for adapting SaP to the unique Chinese educational and cultural features, we provide a future vision for the cultivation of the teacher-student relationship.

A qualitative case study of a Korean former addict’s existential self‐interpretation and identity transformation

AbstractThis study explored the case of a former addict, focusing on his existential self‐interpretation and identity transformation process. This study began from the question of whether philosophical processes related to existential self‐interpretation could lead to the formation of the concept of bottoming out and of identity transformation. To answer this question, the study analyzed the case of a male in his mid‐forties who was addicted to drugs for approximately 30 years and has only recently maintained abstinence. The study used the phenomenological approach to determine the meaning drugs held for him in each stage, and what drug‐related identity he had in each stage. Further, this study identified the integrative implications of these meanings in terms of existential self‐interpretation and identity transformation. The four different identities the man identified for the four stages of his life were juvenile delinquent, gang member, half‐gangster, and breadwinner, and the associated meanings drugs had for him during each period were “glue,” “filthy,” “leeches,” and “abstinence,” respectively. Finally, this study elucidated the integration of these meanings through the hermeneutic circle, identified the social welfare implications of the findings, and developed educational recommendations.

Challenges of Korean Immigrant Leadership in the Church

Abstract The article suggests that the practices of leadership within Korean communal transformational leadership in Korean resistance movements provide a resource for women in the Korean immigrant church. The article addresses the challenges of Korean leadership in immigrant contexts, how immigrant leadership is performed and transformed, and how immigrants have developed and adapted their leadership from a Korean to US context during the immigrant identity transformation process.

Online communities as points of observation of the transnational migrant career: a case study on Italian immigrants in Toronto

ABSTRACT This paper aims to explore the significance that social media plays in the lives of transnational migrants. Building on data collected during a six-month online/offline ethnography conducted among the members of a Facebook group for Italian migrants in Toronto, it is argued here that diasporic online communities provide a privileged location to capture the complex process of identity transformation undergone by migrants. Data suggests that research into online communities allows for a dynamic and adaptive understanding of the migratory experience capable of recognising the lives of migrants not just as the results of single events, but as trajectories that could help reach a better understanding of the evolution of life courses, as well as changes in social status.

English Language Learning of Indonesian Students during Study Abroad Program in Australia

This article discusses how the transformation of identity and cultural learning influence the English language learning of Indonesian students during their study program. This article is divided into three different sections of discussions in order to elaborate this issue comprehensively. Firstly, the identity change during the study abroad program is discussed by utilising the concept of identity. Subsequently, the process of identity transformation of Indonesian students during their study abroad is further elaborated through the identity movement theory. Secondly, the process of cultural learning during study abroad program is explained regarding English language learning of Indonesian students. Thirdly, how the students’ identity transformation and cultural learning impact on English language learning is also be analysed. In conclusion, the role of identity transformation and intercultural learning is significant in the enhancement of English language proficiency of the students during the study overseas program. Furthermore, the process of English language learning transforms the students’ identities through the students’ engagement in the new sociocultural condition. The transformation of students’ identity occurs in three steps of identity movement which are molar, molecular and line of flight identity. The transformation also lies in intercultural learning which later develops the students’ intercultural awareness and understanding. That is to say, study overseas can transform the students’ identity and facilitate cultural learning in which both are beneficial in enhancing the English language proficiency of the student. Besides that, study abroad program also constructs difference between individuals who pursue study overseas and who do not.

Adult women and ADHD: On the temporal dimensions of ADHD identities

AbstractThis paper uses conceptual resources drawn from psychosocial process thinking (Brown & Reavey, 2015; Brown & Stenner, 2009; Stenner, 2017) and from G.H. Mead in particular, to contribute to an emerging body of work on the experiences of adult women with ADHD (Horton‐Salway & Davies, 2018; Quinn & Madhoo, 2014; Singh, 2002; Waite & Ivey, 2009). It has a particular focus on how ADHD features in the construction of women's identities and life‐stories and it draws upon findings from a qualitative investigation of adult women diagnosed or self‐diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). A theoretically informed ‘thematic decomposition’ of 16 depth interviews reveals how complex processes of identity transformation are mediated by the social category of ADHD. Through this process, troubled pasts are reconstructed from the perspective of an ‘emergent’ identity that offers participants the potential for a more enabling and positive future.

Running between the raindrops: Running marathons and the potential to put marriage in jeopardy

For many amateur long-distance runners the marathon is not merely an event – it is a demanding activity, both physically and mentally. While being immersed in this activity they enter the running social world and undergo a process of identity transformation. This process encompasses immersion into a ‘zone’ that is often outside the partnership of marriage and includes absorption into social networks that are unlimited in time and place. In this study, an ethnographic research design was utilized, employing a combination of participant observation, interviews, and website analysis. Key findings illustrate both the complexity and the fragility regarding the encouragement of the non-running partner. It is suggested that, even if the non-running partner is supportive, embracing a serious marathon identity by the running partner can jeopardize the marriage. In other words, the partnership may crumble due to the identity transformation of one of the partners when the other doesn’t play an active part in the new social world.

Imagining ‘Europe’: Constituting Turkey's Identity on the Path to Eu Membership

AbstractIn the aftermath of the Cold War, Turkey, once the ‘southern bastion of NATO’, had to redefine its identity and geopolitical location in relation to not only the West and Europe, but also its neighbours to the East. In this period, the country's aspiration to join the European Union and its position vis‐à‐vis Europe proved to be determining factors in its identity transformation process, taking into consideration its traditional Western orientation. By specifically focusing on the last decade, this study analyses how Turkey's decision‐makers constituted the identity of the state in relation to a specific conception of Europe. It argues that these decision‐makers, through references to the distinctive history and geography of Turkey, reconceptualised the identity of the state in order to transform Turkey into an effective actor in the world and, in doing so, challenged the dominant inclusive, multi‐cultural and normative characterisations of the European Union's identity.

El rugido de Calibán: Ruido, cultura y subversión en tiempos de Próspero

El rugido de Calibán representa en este artículo el ruido que la modernidad ha tachado de incomprensible. Hablando específicamente del campo musical, este rugido está constituido por las prácticas sonoras que la cultura dominante trata de excluir. Con el fin de explorar distintos aspectos de la dominación capitalista y de los procesos de resistencia que se dan en su contra, este texto aborda tres ejes principales en los que las prácticas ruidistas se convierten en espacios de subversión de los valores culturales hegemónicos. El primero de estos ejes es el mercado, el segundo el cuerpo y el tercero el deseo. De manera transversal, exploraremos la relación que tiene el ruido con los procesos de descontrol social y de transformación identitaria.

A North Korean Defector’s Journey Through the Identity-Transformation Process

ABSTRACTThe current study examined how a North Korean defector attending a college in South Korea transformed her identity while learning English. This study was grounded in the notion of second language learning as a struggle of a socially constituted being in which the language learner constantly structures and restructures his or her social identity. Data were collected through journals and interviews with the defector. Data analysis revealed that the North Korean defector experienced an identity transformation: from being a resisting North Korean who wanted to maintain her North Korean identity by consciously ignoring English education to being a struggling English learner who eventually yielded to the need for English learning; then an active learner who found English learning valuable and meaningful; and finally, a visionary who aimed to care about those in need, particularly English learning needs. During the identity transformation process, the defector constantly negotiated her identities in response to multiple social factors. Based on these findings, the present study offers pedagogical suggestions for English education for North Korean defectors.
