Social Power May Enhance Workplace Initiative: An Experimental Investigation Among Two Samples.

Organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) refers to voluntary actions members take to benefit organizational function. However, the benefits of OCB for organizations are sometimes countered by detriments for employees who exhibit them, resulting in threats to organizational members' psychological wellbeing. The present research examined whether social power-the perceived ability to control allocations and outcomes in a social hierarchy-could increase OCB endorsement while buffering against negative personal costs. Indeed, manipulated social power enhanced OCB endorsement. This effect was mediated by increased positive affect and goal seeking among participants assigned to a high-power condition relative to participants assigned to a low-power condition. Further, participants assigned to a high-power (vs. low-power) condition did not report increased occupational burden despite their greater OCB endorsement. Patterns of results were similar among a sample of community members (N = 149; Mage = 37 years) and a sample of university students (N = 129; Mage = 20 years). Organizations might empower members by employing procedural justice principles that facilitate members' meaningful contributions to workplace operations.

Technology utilization, self-legitimacy, and external procedural injustice: a study of Chinese police officers

PurposeThe main purpose of this study is to examine the direct relationship between police officers' perceived technology utilization and their perception of external procedural injustice, as well as the indirect relationship through perceived self-legitimacy.Design/methodology/approachThis study used survey data collected from 1,944 police officers in a northern Chinese province. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was performed to assess the direct and indirect associations between technology utilization and external procedural injustice.FindingsTechnology efficacy was negatively associated with external procedural injustice and positively associated with both self-legitimacy and public-defined legitimacy. Furthermore, officers’ self-perceived legitimacy is negatively associated with their support for procedurally unjust behaviors, while officers’ perception of public-defined legitimacy, unexpectedly, is positively related to their endorsement of procedural injustice. Conversely, technology difficulty was positively related to external procedural injustice and negatively associated with public-defined legitimacy.Originality/valueThe present study represents a first attempt to link technology utilization to external procedural injustice in the policing literature. This study provides needed evidence to support the importance role of technology utilization in shaping police officers’ occupational attitudes toward themselves and the public in an authoritarian country.

Adding Insult to Injustice

Demand for online higher education has grown considerably in recent years but comes with a unique set of challenges. Online students often experience lower sense of connection, which may give impetus to join student-led social media groups. Use of these groups may exacerbate another challenge: the reportedly greater levels of vengeful dissent towards staff from online students, which, in on-campus students, has been linked to low procedural justice perceptions. This study explored the association between procedural justice perceptions and vengeful dissent in online and on-campus education, examining the moderating effect of student-led social media groups. A total of 127 adults (M age = 25.46, SD = 7.82; 73.22% female) who were either studying or had recently completed a degree at an Australian university in either fully online or on-campus mode (64 online; 63 on-campus) completed an online self-report survey. As hypothesised, low procedural justice perceptions were more strongly associated with greater vengeful dissent in online students and use of student-led social media groups strengthened the association in online students only. The findings represent the first to empirically explore the justice perception-dissent relationship in online learning and have several implications for policy and practice in navigating online education.

Anti-fracking protests and compliance with police: An examination of public opinion in the Anthropocene

Few studies that investigate public views about compliance with police consider the environmental movement. The present study helps fill this gap in the literature by investigating attitudes about protester compliance with police at anti-fracking protests. Study data come from a representative sample of adults living in the United Kingdom ( n = 1051). Multivariate findings generated by ordinary least squares (OLS) regression and structural equation modelling show that the public is less likely to agree that anti-fracking protesters should obey police commands when they perceive that hydraulic fracturing is a risk. Moreover, views about hydraulic fracturing, the environment, protest and protesters all appear to influence perceptions that anti-fracking protest police act in ways that are procedurally (un)just. Procedural justice, in turn, is positively correlated with people’s attitudes that anti-fracking protesters should comply with police. These findings have important implications for future UK energy policy and state legitimacy.

Definitions of Fairness Differ Across Socioeconomic Groups & Shape Perceptions of Algorithmic Decisions

Understanding how people perceive algorithmic decision-making is remains critical, as these systems are increasingly integrated into areas such as education, healthcare, and criminal justice. These perceptions can shape trust in, compliance with, and the perceived legitimacy of automated systems. Focusing on San Francisco's decade-long policy of algorithmic school assignments, we draw on procedural and distributive justice theory to investigate parents' fairness perceptions of San Francisco's school assignment system. We find that key differences in parents' definitions of fairness shape their preferences for what constitutes a fair school assignment system, while also controlling for parents' school assignment outcomes. Moreover, parents' definitions and perceptions of fairness differ across socioeconomic and racial groups. For instance, among white respondents, the most used definition of fairness was "proximity'' to their assigned school, whereas, among Hispanic or Latino parents, the most popular definition of fairness was that the "same rules'' are applied to everyone. It is crucial for computational system designers and policymakers to consider these differences when deciding on the goals and values embedded in decision-making systems and who those goals and values reflect.

From policy to progress: do female parliamentarians influence energy justice?

ABSTRACT Women parliamentarians have been playing an increasingly important role in shaping climate policy and advocating for energy justice in recent years. As lawmakers, they have a unique opportunity to influence policy decisions and prioritize sustainable practices that can mitigate the effects of climate change. Additionally, women parliamentarians bring a unique perspective to the table, often championing issues that directly impact women, children, and marginalized communities who are disproportionately affected by climate change and energy injustices. As the composition of parliamentarians becomes more diversified with the increasing representation of women, it is crucial to investigate whether female parliamentarians influence energy justice. Based on the theory of ecofeminism, which suggests that women are relatively more concerned with environmental sustainability and environmental risks than men, this study tests the hypothesis that women parliamentarians are more likely to take action in favour of energy justice. Specifically, this paper aims to examine the causal effect of female parliamentarians in promoting energy justice in a panel of 62 countries. The study proposes three sub-indicators of energy justice namely distributive justice, procedural justice, and restorative justice. Using the two-stage instrumental variable approach, we isolate the effect of female parliamentarians and find that it is a driver of energy justice. The results of a mediation analysis highlight the role of democracy and human capital as transmission channels, explaining the indirect effect of female parliamentarians on energy justice. The study's conclusions therefore highlight the importance of supporting and empowering women parliamentarians in their efforts to combat climate change and energy injustice.

Recorded Justice or Procedural Justice? A Randomized Controlled Experiment of the Influence of Body Worn Cameras and Officer Behavior on Citizen Attitudes

We implement cluster randomization to test the impact of procedurally just and unjust police behavior during a hypothetical traffic stop (versus procedurally neutral behavior), in addition to the impact of BWC notification (versus BWC absence). The findings from post-vignette surveys administered to a random sample of 750 respondents indicate procedural justice has a pronounced effect on citizens’ perceptions of the officer’s behavior, their attitudes about the encounter, and their general views about police and the law within the context of the vignette. BWC neither improved nor worsened attitudes, nor did it buffer the impact of procedurally unjust policing or enhance the impact of procedurally just policing in the eyes of citizens. Tests of asymmetry indicate procedurally unjust police behavior results in more negative judgments of the officer’s behavior in the vignette than procedurally just behavior results in positive judgments. The results suggest that officer behavior matters much more than BWCs.

E-participation in energy transitions: What does it mean? Chances and challenges within Germany's Energiewende

Does e-participation generate more democratic legitimacy in the context of the German Energiewende through more input and procedural justice, better outputs and environmental outcomes that are accepted by the public? In recent years, many forms of e-participation have emerged, and space for experiments with visual and interactive technologies has been created. However, research evaluating e-participation technologies in energy transitions is lacking. This study uses interviews with 33 stakeholders in a planned wind farm project, combined with online survey results, to derive empirical insights into attitudes towards and preferences for e-participation. On the one hand, we observe openness towards new options for creative input and visualization-based online tools and virtual realities. On the other hand, stakeholders fear vulnerabilities and are skeptical about the efficacy of online discourse. Institutional stakeholders primarily see risks in civic participation, while citizens themselves see the benefits. Unexploited potential for creative input, deliberation, and collaborative planning could be leveraged to increase democratic legitimacy. In this context, better outputs are not synonymous with accepting outcomes, but can include changes to or even rejection of plans based on public preferences and concerns. This potential remains largely untapped, however, and requires a willingness to participate, thus calling for mobilization strategies.

Investigating the relationship between various dimensions of organizational justice and psychological contract breach among clinical nurses: a cross-sectional study

BackgroundAlthough psychological contract breach is linked to various significant organizational consequences, few studies have explored the antecedents of this important concept within the nursing field. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between perceived organizational justice and psychological contract breach among clinical nurses.MethodsThis descriptive cross-sectional study included 328 inpatient ward nurses from six teaching hospitals in Tehran, Iran. Clinical nurses were selected through multistage random sampling. Data were collected using a demographic questionnaire, the Niehoff and Moorman (1993) Organizational Justice Questionnaire, and the Robinson and Morrison (2000) Psychological Contract Breach Questionnaire.Data analysis was performed in SPSS version 21 using descriptive statistics, Pearson’s correlation coefficient, and multiple linear regression analysis.ResultsThe findings revealed that procedural justice (P < 0.001; β=-0.20) and interactional justice (P < 0.001; β=-0.47) explained 41% of the variance in psychological contract breach among nursing staff.ConclusionsThe results identified interactional and procedural justice as the most significant dimensions of organizational justice in explaining nurses’ perceived psychological contract breach. Therefore, healthcare managers should prioritize fair decision-making processes and interactions with nurses to mitigate ' perceived the psychological contract breach.

Procedural Fairness in Budgeting and Employee Performance in The Context of Information Sharing

Information sharing and procedural fairness are crucial for achieving business objectives through employee performance. The results of this research will help firm management make decisions about how to improve employee and company performance by upholding procedural fairness and increasing information sharing between superiors and subordinates. This research aims to examine the effect of procedural fairness on information sharing, the effect of information sharing on employee performance, and the mediating role of information sharing on the effect of procedural justice on employee performance. This study uses primary data collected through questionnaires. The sample consisted of 108 sub-manager level employees (services, trade, and manufacturing) selected based on a purposive sampling technique. Data analysis was conducted using the regression method. Data analysis findings indicate that procedural fairness affects employee performance, which is mediated by information sharing. If procedural justice is applied, communication will be better, especially regarding relevant information; this can improve employee . As demonstrated by empirical studies of Indonesian companies, there is currently no research that reveals the relationship between procedural fairness, information sharing, and employee performance. performance. However, cross-sectional studies have flaws because they frequently lack evidence of causal links between the variables they study. According to empirical studies on Indonesian organizations, no research has demonstrated a connection between procedural fairness, information sharing, and employee performance. Based on the results of the data analysis, it can be concluded that procedural fairness and information sharing positively related to employee performance.

Perceptions of Correctional Officer Procedural Justice, Low Self-Control, and Institutional Misconduct Among People in Prison

Using data from the Prison Project, a nationwide study of individuals entering pre-trial detention ( N = 1,609) in the Netherlands, the study examines the associations among self-control (e.g., acting on impulse, lack of forethought, inability to concentrate), perceptions of procedural justice (i.e., people in prison’s perceptions of their treatment by prison staff), and prison misconduct (e.g., being aggressive toward prison staff and/or other people incarcerated in prison). Results show that low self-control is positively associated with prison misconduct while perceptions of procedural justice are negatively associated with misconduct. The effect of procedural justice on prison misconduct does not significantly differ across levels of self-control. The study contributes to the limited literature on self-control theory and procedural justice within corrections.

From community engagement to community inclusion for socially and procedurally just flood risk governance

AbstractUrban flood risk governance (FRG) approaches increasingly seek to engage local communities—and their surrounding ecosystem in natural flood management (NFM) approaches—to co‐produce socio‐ecological resilience. This systematic review investigates current approaches, barriers, and enablers of community engagement in urban FRG through a flood risk justice lens. Employing a systematic search and an adapted ‘best fit’ framework synthesis methodology, and reporting results according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analyses transparent reporting system. The central theme of inclusivity emerged from the synthesis, which integrated sub‐themes of relationality, non‐universalism, power structures, and personal paradigms in a conceptual model. Results invite FRG practitioners to reframe community engagement as community inclusion in order to respond to the procedural, social, and environmental justice concerns of urban ‘flood disadvantage’ which may be reinforced by current engagement approaches. Critical discussion of evidence—informed by the conceptual model—recognised five principles for realising procedurally just community inclusion; promoting the co‐production of integrated community inclusion strategies alongside the communities themselves. The study identified a gap in the literature concerning community involvement in NFM; highlighting a priority for future research with a view to realise more inclusive FRG.

Factors associated with encounter-specific police procedural justice perceptions among Dutch detainees

ABSTRACT Previous research on police procedural justice shows that observed assessments of police behaviour, for example through systematic social observation, are not strongly correlated with citizen perceptions of the same police behaviour. There is a growing body of knowledge about how people form their perceptions of police behaviour and how personal and situational characteristics are associated with specific judgements about procedural justice. However, we know little about how this works for people who most frequently interact with the police and criminal justice system, such as offenders or arrestees. The present study uses data from the Prison Project to examine to what extent individual and situational characteristics relate to perceptions of encounter-specific police procedural justice among Dutch detainees. Male adults in pre-trial detention (N = 1380) were surveyed on how they perceived procedural justice during their arrest, which occurred approximately three weeks prior. In addition to individual characteristics (demographics, attitudes, psychosocial characteristics and criminal history), we measured characteristics that reflect the situation during arrest, such as location, police verbal abuse and unnecessary use of force. This allowed us to examine the relationship between situational factors and detainee perceptions, net of individual characteristics. Regression analyses show that next to pre-existing general attitudes towards the police, several situational characteristics (i.e. perceptions of use of force and verbal abuse, anger and outcome fairness) were strongly associated with encounter-specific procedural justice perceptions. Our results indicate that, beyond (pre-existing) individual characteristics, situational factors of the arrest play an important role in forming specific procedural justice perceptions of the police.

Children’s participation in green space planning: a pathway to environmental justice

ABSTRACT Green spaces provide multiple benefits to physical and mental health, especially for children. Meanwhile, children are not typically included in most participatory processes regarding green spaces and their needs, if at all, tend to be represented by adults. This study attempts to answer the following research questions: (1) Does the degree of children’s participation differ depending on the spatial scale of green space planning processes? (2) How can children’s participation be interpreted in the context of environmental justice? We used mixed methods to assess the legal condition, process flow and products of three participatory processes regarding green space planning in Lodz (Poland). Our findings demonstrate that even the seemingly well-intentioned processes may fail to adequately incorporate children because of procedural inconsistencies and other deficiencies. Even if a process allows children to express their opinions, it fails to translate these voices into reality. We highlight the need to increase awareness of the importance of children’s inclusion in participatory processes to guarantee that their needs are considered, endow children with pro-environmental behaviours, and promote the idea of civil society. We contribute to the environmental justice debate by demonstrating the necessity of differentiating between procedural and participatory environmental justice dimensions.

Understanding energy conflicts: From epistemic disputes to competing conceptions of justice

Analysing energy conflicts is crucial to realise a successful and just energy transition. In doing so, it is insufficient to understand energy conflicts as epistemic disagreements about risk analyses and safety, as people often voice moral concerns beyond epistemic debates. To analyse grievances of social movements and citizens in energy conflicts, scholars often adopt a tenet-based energy justice framework that distinguishes between distributive, procedural, recognition and restorative justice. However, categorising claims into tenets does not shed light on disagreements within the tenets. As such, the existing conceptual toolkit is insufficient to understand the core of energy justice conflicts. This article proposes to shift focus towards capturing different conceptions of justice. This approach is illustrated by a qualitative analysis of the controversy around underground gas storage Grijpskerk and Norg in the Netherlands. The results show that the conflict is constituted by competing conceptions of restorative justice. The institutionalisation of one conception delegitimises and hides certain justice concerns and reduces the conflict to an epistemic dispute, which leads to misrecognition and possibly to the escalation of the conflict.

The Role of Fairness for Accepting Stricter Carbon Taxes in Sweden

Carbon taxes are considered to be an efficient method to reduce greenhouse gas emissions; however, such taxes are generally unpopular, partly because they are seen as unfair. To explore if public acceptance of a stricter carbon tax in Sweden can be enhanced, this study investigates the effectiveness of three different policy designs, addressing collective and personal distributional consequences and promoting procedural aspects (democratic influence). A large-scale (n = 5200) survey is applied, combining a traditional multi-category answer format with a binary choice format. The results show that support for higher carbon taxation can be enhanced if tax revenues are redistributed to affected groups. Policies with collective justice framings can change the attitudes of individuals who express antagonistic attitudes to increased carbon taxation and influence groups comparably more affected by carbon taxes, such as rural residents, low-income groups, and people who are driving long distances. Policy designs addressing collective distributional consequences are, however, less effective on individuals expressing right-leaning ideological views and low environmental concern. Policies addressing personal distributional outcomes, or perceptions of procedural injustice, had no significant effect on policy acceptance.

Assessing distributional justice around Cultural Ecosystem Services (CES) provided by urban green areas: The case of Bologna

Cultural Ecosystem Services (CES) and related flows of benefits – heavily influencing societal and individual health and wellbeing - are usually ascribed non-consumptive values. However, despite the increasing recognition of their contribution to citizens’ quality of life, the intangible nature of CES makes it difficult to quantify them and hard to be integrated in decision making and planning processes. Nevertheless, the assessment of the societal relevance of CES would largely help to improve people wellbeing and quality of life. CES depend not only on the characteristics and features of urban green areas, but also on preferences and needs of the users that interact with them and that contribute to co-produce ES related benefits and values. These diverse needs, coupled with the uneven distribution of urban green area and diverse ways of managing them in the city, could affect the way ES are produced and further exacerbate existing inequalities and disparities. This contribution investigates the case study of the city of Bologna, introducing a spatial approach based on a new and pluralistic notion of urban green area that consider sport facilities and Green Stewards activities, to assess the related CES co-production paths and distributional dimension of justice in the city. Results show a good accessibility to urban green area throughout the city of Bologna (around .70 %). Nevertheless, CES co-production paths are limited in those areas of the city with higher population vulnerability index, due to lower urban green area facilities and green stewards activities, thus highlighting areas with higher distributional and procedural injustice path.

Energy Justice as Epistemic Justice

ABSTRACT Energy justice is often conceived of as consisting of distributive, procedural, and recognitional justice. This article adds epistemic justice, which engages with the question of how the exchange of knowledge can be shaped fairly. Energy issues ramify across social worlds, connecting to multiple knowledge systems. The conventional elements of energy justice place specific demands on how different knowledge systems must be accommodated. Epistemic work must be done to bridge epistemological differences and pay due respect to different forms of knowledge. Energy justice should not neglect this epistemic work, and it cannot be assumed that it is sufficient to invite stakeholders to the discussion arena. I argue that fair ways of dealing with knowledge and fair opportunities for citizens to contribute knowledge to energy affairs are crucial to achieving energy justice of any general form. Also, this epistemic justice is not to be seen as yet another pillar of energy justice but a concern that runs through all pillars of energy justice.
