Gender equality in family relations: legal aspects of protecting the rights of women and men in marriage

Gender equality in family legal relations is one of the main foundations of modern legal and social development. The article is devoted to the systematic analysis of the principle of gender equality in family relations as one of the fundamental tasks of the state and society. This study acquires special importance in the context of global political processes, international obligations of Ukraine and its European choice. The theoretical and practical importance of this issue is decisive for legal principles and the development of national society. Implementation of the principles of gender equality in family relations is important not only from the point of view of justice, but also for ensuring the harmonious development of society in general. The article examines the concept of gender equality in detail and determines its impact on the realization of property rights of participants in family relationships. On the basis of an in-depth analysis of scientific provisions, the legal nature of economic relations of spouses and their importance in the science of family law have been clarified. It is emphasized that family legislation reflects the concept of gender, taking into account all aspects of gender issues. Its purpose is to strengthen the principles of egalitarian democracy in the family, to ensure equal opportunities for the realization of constitutional rights, freedoms and duties of both an individual and a citizen. Legal awareness is defined as the basis of the mechanism for ensuring gender equality in Ukraine. The importance of gender equality for achieving stability and harmony in the family and society in general is emphasized. It has been established that there are problems of low legal awareness of citizens in general and specific problems of gender inequality in the country. It has been studied that gender equality in family relations is becoming more and more relevant and necessary in modern society. The meaning of gender equality as equal recognition of rights and opportunities for men and women in all aspects of family life is considered. Through the analysis of the legal aspects of the protection of the rights of women and men in marriage, highlighting the practical aspects of the realization of these rights and the analysis of socio-cultural influences, the formation and application of gender equality in modern family relations has been studied. It was noted that achieving gender equality in family relationships is a complex process that includes both legal and socio-cultural aspects. In particular, this issue is closely related to the fight against gender stereotypes, which can still affect attitudes towards the roles of men and women in the family. Therefore, the effective provision of gender equality in family legal relations requires not only the improvement of legislation, but also a change in public consciousness.

Femonationalism in the civic-integration work conducted by a Swedish NGO with men’s groups

ABSTRACT Drawing upon the work of Sara R Farris on femonationalism, this article presents an empirical study of the men’s group activities of ‘Vi är Sverige’ (‘We are Sweden’), an NGO that educates male migrants in gender equality. How are problems of gender inequality presented in this context? What versions of gender equality are being taught, and what are the pros and cons thereof from a feminist perspective? Methodologically, this paper draws upon a thematic analysis of public documents and media postings from Vi är Sverige, as well as on observations and individual interviews with members of one of its men’s groups. Our findings indicate that, in these activities, problems of gender inequality were attributed to non-Western men and their perceived lack of Swedish attitudes and values; while injustices done by native Swedish men were passed over in silence. Hence, we have found femonationalist tendencies in civic-integration programmes implemented by an organisation in Sweden that work with men’s groups. However, these programmes did promote a dynamic view of masculinity, thereby providing opportunities for change also to male migrants from societies with a predominantly Muslim population. The participants themselves expressed a favourable attitude towards gender equality, thereby constructing a non-white Swedish masculinity.

Exploring the Challenges and Unveiling the Glass Ceiling Effect on Career Progression among Turkish Women in 3 to 5 Star Hotels

Purpose: Despite the significant growth in women’s participation in the hotel industry workforce, Turkish women continue to encounter limited access to senior management positions. This study investigates the obstacles faced by Turkish women in their pursuit of top managerial roles within the hotel industry and explores potential strategies to break through the glass ceiling. The purpose of this study is to investigate challenges and unveil the effect of the glass ceiling on the career development of Turkish women in 3-to-5-star hotels. The research endeavors to examine the experiences and challenges stemming from gender perceptions encountered by individuals within the hotel industry. Additionally, it seeks to discern the underlying social, organizational, and individual factors contributing to the disparity in leadership or senior positions held by women within this sector. Design/Methodology/Approach: The study utilizes a qualitative research approach, employing semi-structured, in-depth interviews with employees from 3 to 5-star hotels in Antalya, conducting an inductive thematic analysis approach the research aims to investigate the challenges faced by women in advancing their careers within the hotel industry and the diverse factors influencing their workplace performance. The statistical sample of the research includes people who have different viewpoints on the subject of the research. Findings: Twelve women working within the hospitality industry were interviewed. A thematic analysis revealed three interconnected barriers contributing to the glass ceiling faced by Turkish women: cultural and social obstacles, organizational challenges, and personal hindrances. These primary barriers encompass sub-barriers that collectively reinforce the glass ceiling, impeding numerous women from attaining senior positions. This research demonstrates that overcoming the barriers—especially organizational ones—can empower Turkish women to break through the glass ceiling and realize their leadership aspirations. Additionally, the study explores the implications for policymakers, academics, and practitioners regarding the impactful contributions of Turkish women to the hotel labor market." Practical Implications: This research showed evidence that there are real barriers for these women and the findings from this study offer implications that overcoming these barriers, particularly cultural and social barriers, could help Turkish women to crack the glass ceiling and achieve their dream of leadership. Originality/Value: The Hotel industry faces a worldwide shortage of Women in Leadership positions. This study aims to explore the challenges faced by the hotel sector in retaining highly skilled female employees who aspire to pursue managerial career trajectories. In addition, this research can add value to revealing gender inequality problems faced by Muslim women employees in the hospitality industry.

STEMinist sensibilities in the promotion of STEM and tech participation to women and girls

ABSTRACT In recent years, organizations aiming to empower women and girls to participate in STEM have proliferated. While the issue of gender inequality in STEM is well documented, little is known about the feminist appeals these organizations make to girls. This study analyses the websites of five Australian ‘women in tech’ organizations to understand how they frame and respond to the problem of gender inequality, and what feminist sentiments they reflect. Combining a postfeminist sensibility (Gill, 2007) with Myers et al. (2019) concept of STEMinism, we propose a ‘STEMinist sensibility’ to interpret the ways in which gender issues and subjects are represented on STEM initiative websites. We identify four themes characterizing a STEMinist sensibility: 1) acknowledging the problem and promoting solutions to gender inequality, 2) a focus on tech girls as problem solvers, 3) cultivating community and connection for success, and 4) playing with girlification. We show how websites acknowledge the structural impediments women and girls face, yet simultaneously represent girls as both problematic and as problem-solvers in a way that renders them individually responsible for resolving the problems arising from gender inequality in their fields. These findings have implications for organizations promoting STEM initiatives to women and girls.

Gender barriers to career growth and support programs for women managers

In the modern world, where equality and justice are the key principles of social development, the issue of gender equality in the workplace is becoming particularly relevant. This article analyzes the gender barriers that women face in the process of career growth and examines effective support programs aimed at strengthening their positions in leadership roles. Purpose of the research – analyze gender barriers to leadership positions and evaluate the eff ectiveness of support programs for women leaders. Methodology – use of such methods of analysis as comparison, collation, systematization and statistical analysis. Originality / value – manifested in an integrated approach to the problem of gender inequality in career growth, which takes into account both structural and institutional, as well as individual and socio-cultural aspects. Findings – consist in the formulation of specifi c strategies and recommendations for organizations and government agencies to eliminate gender barriers in career growth. This includes the development of effective mentoring and sponsorship programs, the creation of educational and training programs, as well as the introduction of changes in corporate culture to reduce gender bias and stereotypes. The recommendations presented in the article can be used to shape gender equality policies and create a more equitable and inclusive work environment in various organizations and industries.

Case-study: A wicked way to address family violence in a regional setting in Western Australia.

Communication tools have long been used to address complex social policy problems, known as wicked problems, in communities around the world. However, the challenge has remained, how do we measure the impact of social change with communication for development (C4D)? Evaluators recommend utilising evaluation tools that take a wider systems-based approach to assist in the evaluation of C4D projects. Health Communication Resources (HCR) Inc., a health promotion charity that supports C4D projects around the world, aimed to trial a tool to assist evaluation of a project addressing gender inequality, an underlying driver of family violence in the community. WickedLab's tool for systemic change was utilised to assist the evaluation of the complex adaptive system. The research team mapped the system that existed in Geraldton working towards addressing the wicked problem of gender inequality. Mapping the system highlighted how integral C4D actions were in maintaining and strengthening the system as it works together towards gender equality in the community. A systems-based approach can strengthen evaluation and demonstrates the role C4D projects play in addressing wicked problems in a defined location. SO WHAT?: WickedLab's tool for systemic change provides significant potential for the evaluation of other health promotion and communication for development projects.

The study of female images in modern Chinese literary works

This article is a study of female images in modern Chinese literary works. The author analyzes the evolution of representations of women in modern Chinese literature and their important role in the democratization of society. Through an examination of the works of authors such as Lu Xun, Lao She, Chen Zhongshi, Yu Hua and others, the article reveals diverse aspects of women's experiences, including social injustice, discrimination and exploitation. In addition, the author highlights the influence of literature in shaping public opinion about the role and rights of women, and discusses possible paths towards creating a more equal and inclusive society in the future. The subjects of the study are the works of modern Chinese writers and the female images of these literary works. The main research materials are the modern Chinese literary works of various genres and movements, including novels, short stories, poems and essays. Research methods – analysis of literary sources on the research topic, comparative analysis, content analysis, interpretation of texts, historical method. The purpose of the study is to analyze and evaluate ideas about female characters in modern Chinese literary works, taking into account their influence on the processes of democratization of society. The scientific novelty of this study lies in the fact that it represents an initial research look at female images in modern Chinese literature and their influence on the processes of democratization of society. The work is based on the analysis of contemporary literary works and includes the study of various aspects of women's experience in the context of Chinese culture and society. As a result of the study, new trends and patterns in the representation of female characters will be identified, as well as new approaches to understanding and solving the problems of gender inequality and social discrimination in Chinese society will be formulated.

Gender equality in STEMM: the legitimisation of existing inequalities through “resistance talk”

Purpose Despite some recent progress, gender inequality remains a persistent problem in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine (STEMM) organisations. This article seeks to better understand resistance to gender equality (GE) in this context with the aim of shedding light on the workplace-based impediments to equality and unlocking remediation opportunities.Design/methodology/approachThe article draws on in-depth interviews with 20 STEMM leaders to examine how they talk about the problem of gender inequality in the organisations they lead. Because resistance is rarely expressed directly, we adopt an in-depth, granular approach to examining what we call STEMM leaders’ “resistance talk” by decoding expressions of GE resistance that may appear, ostensibly, as something else.FindingsWe found various ideas, arguments and other discursive practices which function to legitimate or justify the status quo. These are both described by leaders in relation to what they are dealing with in their own organisations and expressed themselves. While similar “legitimating discourses” operate in other gender-segregated workplaces, our findings show how they manifest specifically in STEMM contexts.Originality/value Our results provide much-needed granular level evidence of the discursive tactics deployed to legitimate the status quo and obstruct progress toward GE in STEMM. This extends understanding of barriers to GE in STEMM and, importantly, highlights where attention might be directed to both counter resistance and harness potentially changing attitudes to expedite the necessary change required for GE in STEMM.

Protection of Honor and Dignity in Labor Relations

In the article we examined one of the current problems, the problem of protecting the honor and dignity of workers during their working life. A certain difficulty arises in applying this principle in practice; employers are increasingly restricting the rights and freedoms of employees. Gender discrimination is unacceptable, since a person’s biological characteristics should not be a determining factor when hiring. The solution to the problems of gender inequality in the Russian labor market should be carried out gradually, starting with recognition at the state level of the existence of this problem. We believe that this problem has existed for a long time and is inherent in every team, therefore it is imperative to develop effective means of protection not only at the legislative level, but also at the local level, which can consider the characteristics of all aspects of labor relations.

Gender Equality and Women's Rights : A Study in Indian Constitution

The concept of “Gender Equality” is a fundamental human right. Gender equality refers to the equality of responsibilities, rights, and opportunities for every human being. Every individual of the society yearns to achieve equal status and rights in their life. Indian Constitution gives fundamental rights and basics duties to the citizens of India. Women’s rights are recognized as a right in itself, a transformative tool for achieving progress in all other areas of social and economic development. In the present time women’s rights denote the gender equality, and that plays a pivotal role in society. Women’s rights in Indian Constitution leads to a transformation of the structural factors and that reduced gender inequality. Women are getting opportunities in every aspect in their lives, including political, social, economic and cultural. The main objectives of this research are to understand how women are getting their rights through Indian Constitution and to explore the issues and challenges for women.. This is a qualitative and secondary data based study. This paper also focused on how gender equality plays a role in Indian Constitution. Indian Constitutional articles defined equally rights for every human being; Constitution gives rights for being economically independent, for achieving equal status in society, and for equally participation in politics. This paper discussed about the important constitutional articles for gender equality in India. In this research some obstacles have defined on the path of women’s rights and gender equality. In the conclusion part, this paper has been described that Indian constitution mentions lots of articles for gender equality and human rights. Women’s social and economic conditions are improving through constitutional rights; now they have rights to live their life. But because of some strictly taboos and customs in society women are not utilizing their constitutional rights, and still they are facing gender inequality problems. And it can be seen that gender equality is a far cry. Women should be educated; through education, they will be aware of their rights and be able to utilize all those constitutional rights.

Work in IT for women: The realities of Ukraine


 
 
 The article presents a study conducted on gender equality in Ukraine in the field of information technology. The problem of gender inequality still exists throughout the world. The purpose of the article is to study the working conditions of women in IT, to discuss the possible use of stereotypes, and to identify the reasons for women’s lack of interest in working in this field. Formally, there is no prohibition for women to work in the IT industry. However, there are a number of reasons in Ukraine that affect the possibilities of pursuing a career in this direction. The article analyzes the available statistical data and the results of a survey among representatives of the IT sector. It is worth noting the problem of data collection during the war in Ukraine. The importance of the sphere for the country’s economy as a whole and the relevance, demand for specialists, as well as the ratio of women and men employed in this area are considered. Global trends in gender distribution in the field of IT were analyzed. The main stereotypes and situations that constitute obstacles for women in this area are considered and the features inherent in Ukrainian society are also highlighted. Based on the statistical data of Ukraine the number and structure of female students, including foreigners, in recent years were analyzed. It was revealed that the structure of the gender ratio of men and women in education is changing with the formation of the labor market of Ukraine and the distribution by employment status. The ratio of working women and men is approximately the same, but the structure by employment status is different. In Ukraine the IT sector is largely based on individual entrepreneurs. Despite the martial law, the IT community is actively developing and new companies are being created. Training is actively carried out in paid and free courses. Surveys were conducted among students, and it was found that the beginning of a career in the field of information technology is already determined by certain stereotypes of society. Based on the conducted research, the structural gender relations in the field of IT and the main stereotypes that hinder the development of women in this area are analyzed. Recommendations for overcoming gender inequality in the field of IT in Ukraine are presented. Based on the information received, conclusions were drawn: the number of women and men studying technical and mathematical sciences in Ukraine is approximately the same. But in the future, in professional activities, women in many cases prefer to occupy weaker positions, leaving leading positions to men. The main reason for this dynamic is the generally accepted stereotypes and the actualization of the role of women in other areas.
 
 

Uncovering Factors and Solutions to Gender Inequity in the Workplace

With differences in income, promotion, and opportunity continuing to impede progress toward workplace equality, persistent gender inequality in the workplace remains a major concern. The study examines at the complex interplay of factors that cause gender inequality, from cultural standards to organizational biases. A qualitative methodology is used to assess the data from various workplaces. The survey found significant gender differences in pay, representation in leadership roles, and access to professional development opportunities. Additionally, it shows how biases and cultural norms support the upkeep of these disparities. To address these issues, the research proposes a multifaceted approach that includes changes to the law, initiatives for diversity and inclusion, and tactics for personal empowerment. The study can improve society overall and create a more just workplace by putting these solutions into reality. This research explains the problem of gender inequality in the workplace and offers practical mitigation measures. By promoting more inclusive and egalitarian professional environments, we may foster the circumstances for a more just and progressive society.

The Place of Women in the Armed Forces: Legislation and State Compliance with Gender Equality Policies

The purpose of this comparative study is to analyse the challenges and problems faced by women during military service based on the state of gender equality in different countries. The study analysed international law and international judicial practise, which are the driving forces behind making adjustments and changes to the legislation of different countries. The main research method was to compare the existing doctrinal approaches to the study of gender inequality in the armed forces of different countries, to display quantitative indicators of women’s military service in those countries, as well as to analyse and compare the nature of the challenges faced by women during their military service. The study also conducted a thorough analysis of the works of scholars in this area, which confirmed the existence of this problem of gender inequality in the armed forces. It was concluded that the authorised bodies of states should allocate significant resources and efforts to implement measures to ensure the rights of women in the armed forces.

Paying lip service to gender inequality – EU rural development policy in Sweden

While research has pointed to the lack of gender mainstreaming in rural and agricultural policy, how rural policy determines what is seen as problems of gender inequality in the first place and how it constructs men and women in relation to rural development remains unexplored. In this article we perform an in-depth analysis of how rural policy constructs gender inequality problems and gendered subjects. We employ the ‘What’s the problem represented to be’ approach to analyse the implementation of the European Union’s Rural Development Policy in one Swedish region, Jönköping County. We conclude that gender inequality is largely left unproblematic in relation to rural development, placing women in the subject position of being uninterested in rural development policy and lacking the ability to take it on. The focus on farmers and ICT broadband positions adult, Swedish-born men as the norm, reflecting a neoliberal emphasis on economic growth through competitive businesses. We also conclude that the policy twists ‘gender mainstreaming’ by claiming that it promotes gender equality, while it in fact takes no action. Paying lip service to gender equality rural policy thereby co-opts feminism, in line with a neoliberal ‘postfeminist’ discourse, which is harmful to the feminist project. Alternative approaches to gender inequalities suggest that there may be broader, and different, ways of discussing them in relation to rural development, making for a broader spectrum of problematisations and subject positions, which may, in turn, allow a transformation towards gender equality.

What is the Problem of Gender Inequality Represented to be in Inter-National Development Policy in Burkina Faso?

This article contributes to critical policy analysis scholarship from a post-structuralism perspective. Employing the ‘What’s the problem represented to be’ (WPR) framework, a Foucault-influenced post-structural approach, we investigate what is the problem of Gender Inequality (GI) represented to be in development in Burkina Faso. Based on systematic analysis of selected (inter)national development policy documents and in-depth stakeholder interviews, our results show two main categories of problem representations: a) local culture/ informal structures that strengthen and are strengthened by patriarchy, and b) women’s weak agency that undermine their effective participation. These problem representations are framed from two different but overlapping standpoints: rights and development. Furthermore, the informal structures are presented as the source of the problem of GI while formal structures are portrayed as the solution. The underlying assumptions ignore the gendered impacts of history, colonial legacies, the interconnectedness and often-conflicting state policies and globalisation. Consequently, the problem of GI is depoliticised, rendered local, technical, and static. This deflects responsibility in solving the problem, limits local agency and the exploration of effective cultural and bottom-up policy responses. Alternatively, GI could be represented as a problem of structural unequal power relations – rather than a simplistic blame of local culture.

Amanda Maier’s String Quartet: an interpretation of the Romantic genre model

Statement of the problem. The proposed study is devoted to the chamber instrumental heritage of the Swedish violinist and composer Amanda Maier-Röntgen, a graduate of the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm and the Leipzig Conservatory, whose person and work are practically unknown in the Ukrainian musical community. However, her chamber instrumental compositions are of indisputable interest for performers and have recently gained popularity among the latter. Also, the study of the composer’s best opuses, undoubtedly, enriches scientific ideas about the development of the leading genres of musical culture in the second half of the 19th century. Recent research and publications. The creative person of A. Maier-Röntgen is sporadically mentioned in reviews considering the Swedish musical culture (Jönsson, 1995; Karlsson, 1994; Öhrström, 1987; Öhrström & Eriksson, 1995; Riemann, 2017; Laurence, 1978), in some reference materials (Öhrström, n.d.; Riemann, 2017; Laurence, 1978). The name of the composer is also found in sources covering the work of J. Brahms, E. Grieg, and Julius Röntgen, the husband of Amanda Maier, also a romantic composer (Fuchs, 2001; Hofmann & Hofmann, 2006; Grieg, 2001; Vis, 2007). At the moment, there is the only research that directly examines A. Maier’s person – it is the dissertation of J. F. Martyn (2018), where considerable attention is paid only the life and creative path of the musician, her performing activities, as well as the general problem of gender inequality in the musical environment of the second half of the 19th century. Thus, today there are no musicological studies dedicated to the composer work by A. Maier. Objectives, methods, and novelty of the research. The purpose of the study is to consider one of the chamber instrumental opuses of the composer, the String Quartet in A Major, from the standpoint of an individual interpretation of the Romantic genre model. The novelty of the research consists in the first experience in Ukrainian musicology of studying the genre-stylistic features of Amanda Maier’s String Quartet. The research results are based on the use of such methods as historical and stylistic, genre and stylistic, comparative, as well as on the set of analytical musicological methods. Research results and conclusion. A. Maier’s String Quartet imitates the features inherent in the genre model formed in the Austro-German tradition, in particular, in the work of F. Schubert, the peculiarities of which are the reliance on song and dance genre elements, a large specific weight of lyrical and epic images and narrative, the absence pronounced conflict in the sonata allegro. But in the cycle there are contrasts between the dance-genre, lyrical and lyrical-dramatic spheres, which causes a certain “mosaic” of the form with rapid changes of images that reminds of the chamber works of F. Mendelssohn and R. Schumann. Manifestations of virtuosity in the Finale of the Quartet testify to the composer’s deep understanding of the specifics of playing stringed instruments and become an imprint of her performing individuality. At the same time, the Quartet also shows certain tendencies to experiment with the already existing Romantic model, which are manifested in the tonal openness of the cycle, the absence of typical tonal correlations between its parts and between the fragments of the form within of the parts, and in a bright contrast between the First part and the Finale.

The issue of legal provision of gender equality in labor relations in Ukraine during the war

The article deals with current issues of legal provision of gender equality in labor relations in Ukraine, in particular, in the conditions of martial law. It is noted that the basis of Ukrainian legislation regulating the issue of gender equality in labor relations is international legal documents, which define approaches to the establishment of equal gender rights. In particular, the national legal framework on issues of gender equality in labor relations consists of: the Constitution of Ukraine, the Code of Labor Laws of Ukraine, laws of Ukraine "On ensuring equal rights and opportunities of women and men”, "On employment of the population”, "On the principles of prevention and countering discrimination in Ukraine”, "On wages”, "On holidays”, "On labor protection” and others, as well as resolutions of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine and decrees of the President of Ukraine in this area. It was concluded that in order to achieve gender equality in Ukraine, it is necessary not only to establish the principle of equality by adopting the relevant legal norms, but also to create an effective mechanism for the implementation of these norms. Since the formation of an effective organizational mechanism for ensuring the implementation of gender policy, that is, an effective policy of equal rights and opportunities for women and men, is a mandatory condition for the operation of a democraticindependentlegal state,thedevelopment of an informed civil society and the perspective of European integration. It was established that even today international organizations emphasize the relevance of gender issues in Ukraine, despite the presence of international and national legal acts designed to solve the problems of gender inequality in the labor market. The lack of consistency, systematicity and coordination of joint efforts of state institutions and civil society organizations prevents the achievement of significant changes in overcoming gender inequality. It has been established that today, in the conditions of a full­scale war, the state is already taking certain steps in this direction, which are aimed, first of all, at adapting the sphere of work and labor relations to the present. In particular, the Ukrainian authorities, together with public organizations and international partners, intensified work on building a system for responding to and countering any type of violence, helping victims of war and ensuring equal opportunities for women and men.

Intertwined gender inequality in Desy Anwar’s "Growing Pains"

Rooted within structures of patriarchy and modern life, gender equality seems still far from achieved. Providing social issues like gender inequality, literary works become reliable proof to portray subordination or discrimination against women. Thus, this study aspires to strive for women empowerment and re-educating men expectantly to tackle the problems of gender inequality. Desy Anwar’s Growing Pains is interlaced with gender issues in five chapters. This research aims to unveil a range of gender conflicts and the efforts of the female main characters to overcome the hardships in life. Descriptive criticism is employed as a method of analysis. Following Lazar’s Feminist Critical Discourse Analysis (2014), the linguistic data in the form of lexical choices, phrases, and clauses are first identified based on the language features indicating gender inequality or violence. Eckert and McConnell-Ginet’s language theory (2013) is applied in unraveling the details of linguistic evidence. Then, interpreting the discursive logic is correlated with the cultural realm of the novel Hence, the findings yield that all the selected lexicons, phrases, and clauses of the novel construct the meanings of gender issues. Socio-cultural experiences represent forms of gender-based violence such as asymmetrical family systems, misogynistic practices, gender-identity threatening, deviant female promiscuity, and cruel motherhood portrayal. The symbolic and psychological impacts are also identified, referring to post-patriarchal regimes. Although there seems to be effortful survival in masculine domination, both internal and external factors are in support of constructed gender inequalities. Eventually, all the female characters are demonstrated as the vulnerably subordinated subjects of neoliberal hegemony. This research fervently aims to recall the awareness of symbolic gender violence due to ongoing powers that halt the emergence of gender equality and reshape it into hegemonic strategies.Keywords: hegemony, inequality, misogyny, patriarchy, symbolic violence

Significance of quality higher education in the advancement of gender equality: the case of Bangladesh

PurposeThis research has been conducted to determine the core reasons for gender inequality and to evaluate the effectiveness of higher education as a sole solution to ensure gender equality.Design/methodology/approachThis qualitative case study research explores the causes behind gender inequality, and interviews were conducted with 20 male and female graduates and five stakeholders. Liberal feminism theory has been employed to understand the phenomena.FindingsThe findings show that receiving a university degree cannot ensure gender equality and empowerment of women in Bangladesh. The key factors contributing to gender disparity are societal and a general deficiency of technical knowledge.Practical implicationsMore policies should support women in every aspect of life, and the existing policies should be carefully followed. The government must ensure high-quality education, and people must show more significant concern by acquiring knowledge from quality education seeking gender equality.Originality/valueThis research fills the gap in the current literature by providing knowledge about the practical effectiveness of quality higher education in solving the problem of gender inequality, its core reasons and possible solutions in Bangladesh's context.

Social-Symbolic Work in the Construction of Social Problems: Constructing Gender Inequality in Turkish Social Partnerships

How social problems are constructed within social partnerships has significant effects on the management, impact, and survival of those partnerships. To explore how social problems are constructed, we adopt a social-symbolic work perspective, which highlights the variety of forms of work involved in this process, how they interact, and the impact of context on that process. Empirically, we focus on two social partnerships in Turkey that both addressed gender inequality but constructed that problem in very different terms. Our study suggests that the differences in how they came to construct the problem of gender inequality in Turkey was tied to the qualities of two forms of social-symbolic work—relational work and practice work—in which they engaged: the partnership that constructed gender inequality as an embedded problem engaged in extensive relational work and deep practice work; in contrast, the partnership that constructed the problem as disembedded engaged in efficient relational work and shallow practice work. Further, we observed that the construction of the problem of gender inequality was tied to different outcomes: an embedded social construction of the problem was associated with holistic outcomes on a more limited scale; a disembedded construction of the problem was associated with simpler outcomes on a greater scale. The paper contributes to the literature on social partnerships by showing how social problems are constructed through partners' work and how this affects their impact and sustainability. It also extends the literature on social-symbolic work by highlighting the interplay of different forms of work in constructing social problems. Finally, it contributes to research on gender inequality and organizations by showing how the work of social partnerships can shape conceptions of gender inequality at the meso level.
