Exploring Engagement and Efficacy in Secondary English Education in China: A Problem-Based Social Constructivism Approach

The English learning environment, both online and offline, can be improved through the implementation of effective pedagogical approaches. In response to secondary education needs, it is critical to establish comparable curriculum paradigms that address the knowledge acquisition gap and psychometric variation. This study aims to promote student engagement and self-efficacy in English education by implementing a problem-based learning (PBL) approach integrated with social constructivism (SC). A t-test and a correlation test were used in a single-group quasi-experiment with 45 participants. The results of paired samples t-tests show a significant difference in engagement (M = 4.78, SD = 2.95, p = .001, p < .05) and self-efficacy (M = 6.49, SD = 16.59, p = .01). Admittedly, both cognitive engagement and social engagement enhance grammatical and textual competence efficacy dramatically, leading to a spectacular improvement. After controlling for the pre-test, a correlation between engagement and efficacy remains significant (r (43) = -0.40, p = .01). In conclusion, the combination of PBL with SC education has demonstrated remarkable effectiveness in facilitating English language learning, meeting the needs of secondary education teenagers, whether in a physical classroom or engaging through online platforms.

E-Book Design for Problem-Based Learning to Stimulate Creative Thinking Ability

Creative thinking is a crucial skill for students amidst the challenges of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Students adept at creative thinking often find problem-solving more manageable. However, efforts to enhance students' creative thinking abilities remain suboptimal, partly due to limited teaching materials. This study aims to address this gap by analyzing the necessity for, designing, and developing an e-book tailored to problem-based learning to foster creative thinking skills. Following the ADDIE model, the research engages teachers and 8th-grade Junior High School students as participants. Data collection involves observations and interviews, followed by data reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings include an assessment of e-book requirements and design aligned with problem-based learning to stimulate creative thinking. This study offers a roadmap for mathematics teachers to develop e-books that not only enhance students' understanding of mathematics but also nurture their creative thinking skills. The novelty lies in the integration of creative thinking skills within the e-book, coupled with its alignment to the problem-based learning approach.

Improving Economic Learning Outcomes Through Problem-Based Learning Using Augmented Reality Media

This study discusses the improvement of economic learning outcomes through a problem-based learning approach using Augmented Reality (AR) media. With a focus on the application of innovative concepts in education, this study explores how the combination of an effective problem-based learning approach and engaging AR technology can improve students' understanding of economic concepts. The results show that the use of AR in economics learning can significantly improve student engagement, concept understanding, and learning outcomes. In addition, the problem-based learning approach also proved effective in improving students' critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Despite challenges related to technology availability and teacher training, the conclusions of this study emphasize the importance of integrating AR technology and innovative learning approaches in creating a more engaging and effective learning environment in the context of economics education. Further research is needed to optimize the use of this technology and evaluate its effectiveness in various educational contexts.

The Influence of The Problem Based Learning (PBL) Model and Learning Style on the Thinking Abilities

This research aims to investigate the effect of using the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model and variations in learning styles on the critical thinking abilities of class IV students in Cluster V, Palembayan District. Critical thinking ability is a key skill in modern education, encouraging the development of analytical, evaluative and reflective thinking. The research method used in this research is a quasi-experiment with a research design using an experimental design with a 2x2 factorial design technique where there will be a control class and an experimental class. The research sample consisted of two groups of class IV students, one experimental group taught using the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model and one control group taught using a conventional approach. In addition, student learning styles were also identified and analyzed in this research. The research results showed that the group of students taught using the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model experienced a significant increase in critical thinking skills. This is reinforced by the results of statistical analysis which show that the value of tcount (1.910) is higher than ttable (1.708) at a significance level of 0.05. Therefore, it can be concluded that the Problem Learning (PBL) model has a positive effect on increasing students' critical thinking skills. Apart from that, this research also identified that student learning styles influence learning outcomes. Some learning styles may be better suited to a PBL approach, while others are better suited to a conventional approach. Therefore, educators are expected to consider variations in student learning styles in designing effective learning.

SAGES White Paper on the importance of diversity in surgical leadership: creating the fundamentals of leadership development (FLD) curriculum.

The Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) has long recognized and championed increasing diversity within the surgical workplace. SAGES initiated the Fundamentals of Leadership Development (FLD) Curriculum to address these needs and to provide surgeon leaders with the necessary tools and skills to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in surgical practice. In 2019, the American College of Surgeons issued a request for anti-racism initiatives which lead to the partnering of the two societies. The primary goal of FLD was to create the first surgeon-focused leadership curriculum dedicated to DEI. The rationale/development of this curriculum and its evaluation/feedback methods are detailed in this White Paper. The FLD curriculum was developed by a multidisciplinary task force that included surgeons, education experts, and diversity consultants. The curriculum development followed the Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation and Evaluation (ADDIE) instructional design model and utilized a problem-based learning approach. Competencies were identified, and specific learning objectives and assessments were developed. The implementation of the curriculum was designed to be completed in short intervals (virtual and in-person). Post-course surveys used the Kirkpatrick's model to evaluate the curriculum and provide valuable feedback. The curriculum consisted of interactive online modules, an online discussion forum, and small group interactive sessions focused in three key areas: (1) increasing pipeline of underrepresented individuals in surgical leadership, (2) healthcare equity, and (3) conflict negotiation. By focusing on positive action items and utilizing a problem-solving approach, the curriculum aimed to provide a framework for surgical leaders to make meaningful changes in their institutions and organizations. The FLD curriculum is a novel leadership curriculum that provided surgeon leaders with the knowledge and tools to improve diversity in three areas: pipeline improvement, healthcare equity, and conflict negotiation. Future directions include using pilot course feedback to enhance curricular effectiveness and delivery.

Students’ performance, attitude, and classroom observation data to assess the effect of problem-based learning approach supplemented by YouTube videos in Ugandan classroom

In response to global demands, Uganda’s Vision 2040 seeks to transform the country into a modern and prosperous nation by implementing Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4, focusing on equitable and quality education. The 21st-century workforce requires individuals who can effectively navigate complex workplace challenges. This dataset was gathered from Form-2 Ugandan secondary school students (aged 12 to 15) across 12 schools in the Sheema District. The dataset comprises three types of data: students’ performance in a physics topic (simple machines), their attitudes toward problem-solving and critical thinking when learning physics using Problem-Based Learning (PBL) supplemented by YouTube videos, and classroom observations documented with the reformed teaching observational protocol (RTOP). The intervention of teaching using PBL was executed in 2022, collecting data from 973 lower secondary school students. The intervention involved three approaches: one group (144 students) received PBL along with YouTube videos, another group of 482 students received PBL alone, and a third group (347 students) was taught using the traditional method. This data article explains the study’s data creation, collection, and analysis process. The dataset holds significance for secondary school teachers, policymakers, and researchers, offering insights into the impact of PBL with and without ICT resources on learning physics and students’ attitudes toward these learner-centered approaches.

Problem-based learning and the integration of sustainable development goals

PurposeThis study explores how problem-based learning (PBL) programs can address Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) via the higher education (HE) curriculum, teaching materials and relevant assessments, supporting learning at scale for HE institutions.Design/methodology/approachEmploying SDGs and their indicators as the coding framework, our two-phase study evaluates the curriculum and teaching materials of seven PBL programs at a leading higher education institution (HEI). The first phase involved a content analysis to assess the degree of sustainability integration in 156 relevant courses. The second phase applied a semi-automated mapping protocol to analyze learning and teaching materials in 120 relevant courses.FindingsThe school aligns with 17 SDGs (100%), covering 94 indicators (55.62%). On average, each program within the school addresses over ten of these goals and incorporates more than 24 associated indicators. However, the study reveals an imbalance in the incorporation of SDGs, with some goals not yet deeply and comprehensively embedded in the curriculum. While there is a substantial focus on sustainability theories, the practical implications of SDGs in emerging countries, particularly through case studies and assessments, require significant enhancement.Practical implicationsMapping SDGs allows HEIs to identify strengths and gaps in SDG integration, thereby improving the PBL approach to enhance student work readiness in sustainability-focused careers.Originality/valueThrough the lens of transformative learning theory, this study provides evidence of SDG integration into PBL curricula. It highlights a mapping methodology that enables HEIs to evaluate their sustainability readiness in curriculum, teaching materials and relevant assessments.

The Contribution of Christian Religious Education (CRE) in Achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Through a Problem Based Learning Approach - 4A Cycle Model

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has been an important focus and a common goal for all humanity. Degradation of nature is a concern and responsibility for all areas of life, including education, which is a fundamental factor in developing the quality of human life. In this regard, the aim of this research is to provide some ideas for Christian Religious Education (CRE) at the higher education level in supporting the achievement of the SDGs. This research was conducted by in a qualitative descriptive method. As findings, it is found that the contribution of CRE can be made through Student Centered Learning approach, Inquiry model - problem based learning. This approach is carried out through learning practical matters with stages of achieving targets, which are referred to as the 4A cycle model (Awareness, Action Plan, Actualization and Assimilation).

Pengembangan modul pesawat sederhana berbasis problem based learning untuk meningkatkan pemahaman peserta didik

This research at SDK Santa Agnes Ruteng IV. This study was intended to develop teaching materials for science subjects on the topic of Simple Machines to Enhance the Understanding of Grade IV Students. The method applied in this research was Research and Development (R & D) utilizing the ADDIE framework. ADDIE stands to Analyse, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation, which are stages in the research process. However, due to the time constraints and limitations in the researcher's abilities, the development model in this study was limited to four stages: analysing, design, development, and implementation. The module was developed and structured through a validation process by experts in the fields of content, media, and language. The average validation scores obtained from content experts were 3.46, categorized as valid; media experts scored 3.83, also categorized as valid; and language experts scored 3.50, categorized as valid. Thus, the overall average validation score from the three expert assessments was 3.59, and based on the validity categorization criteria, the teaching module fell into the "Valid" category with a percentage of 83.56%. Normality tests also yielded a value for the experimental class of 0.008 > 0.005, indicating that students' learning interests were normally distributed. Furthermore, the one-sample t-test for students' learning interests resulted in a negative t value, with a calculated t value of -5.594 < the critical t value of 1.970, rejecting the null hypothesis (Ho) and accepting the alternative hypothesis (Ha). This implies that there is an influence of using PBL-based modules by fourth-grade students at SDK Santa Agnes Ruteng IV. The implementation fallouts of the learning process showed a very good level of practicality with a percentage of 93.74%. The readability of the teaching module, as evaluated by three teachers, had a readability rate of 92.03%, categorized as good, while the readability by students was 96.56%, also categorized as good. Moreover, the success rate of the developed module achieved an average N-Gain improvement of 0.71, classified as a significant improvement. Based on the research findings, it can be concluded that the module on simple machines using the problem-based learning approach is valid, user-friendly, and effective. Therefore, the developed module is deemed suitable for use as one of the teaching materials in science education for the topic of simple machines.

Applied Data Analysis: A Problem-based Learning Approach

This paper examines the transition of a conventional multivariate statistics module to a problem-based learning module, first implemented in 2021. The primary objective was to enhance students’ problem-solving skills, bridging the gap between mathematical concepts and real-world applications. The approach was implemented to instil a deeper understanding of real-world data analysis, emphasising the interpretation of domain specific problems in mathematical terms and the production of reports for industrial stakeholders.Findings indicate that the integration of problem-based methods not only improved students’ comprehension of statistical techniques but also fostered a more profound appreciation for their practical utility in diverse professional contexts. The problem-solving cycle, a central component of the approach, guided students in critically analysing complex challenges and formulating data driven solutions. Furthermore, this study emphasises the potential for replicating the industrial study group experience within an undergraduate teaching environment.Adopting a problem-based learning approach in the teaching of data analysis empowers students to apply their analytical skills effectively to real-world scenarios, strengthening their capacity to communicate insights and solutions to industrial stakeholders. The study underscores the value of aligning educational practices with the demands of data-driven industries, providing students with a competitive advantage in future research and the job market. The study is descriptive and reflective in nature.

Enhancing Thai student-teacher problem-solving skills and academic achievement through a blended problem-based learning approach in online flipped classrooms

The study aimed to develop a learning model that enhances Thai student-teacher problem-solving skills (PSS) and academic achievement (AA) through a blended problem-based learning (PBL) approach in online flipped classrooms. Phase 1 consisted of the design of the Flipped PARSER (problem-attempt-research-solutions-evaluation-reflect) Model (FPM) through the study of documentation and research. Phase 2 involved using nine experts to assist with the model's development and evaluation using in-depth interviews and content analysis. Phase 3 involved the application and use of the FPM by 30 student-teachers, from which their AA, PSS, and satisfaction were evaluated against the control group of 31 participants. The results from the nine experts' input on the FPM design were significant. Instructor activities included selecting content, media, materials, and their design and development. Other components included learning activities, tools, lesson delivery, and evaluation. Also, PBL methods were again confirmed as an instrumental pedagogy in teaching PSS. When combined with online learning and flipped classrooms, the study's results were higher than those using traditional classroom methods. The study contributes to the literature by determining that online teaching models effectively teach PSS and raise AA scores.

Improving Students’ Creative Thinking Skills Assisted by GeoGebra Software

This study aims to improve students’ creative thinking skills in problem-based, ill-structured, open-ended learning through stimulus. This study used learning strategies that simultaneously develop problem-solving strategies and knowledge discipline. This learning can be achieved if educational activities are focused on authentic, contextual, and relevant tasks or problems so that students can gather the necessary information, evaluate alternative solutions, and present solutions they believe in. Moreover, the ability to generate uncommon or extraordinary ideas must be raised from the problems that exist in learning. The ability to think creatively in mathematics in education using the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) approach assisted by GeoGebra is expected to be a practical approach to educating students in increasing their intellectual potential and familiarizing them to deal with non-routine problems and applying it in their daily life to become a student who can think creatively. This study used a quasi-experimental research method with a quantitative approach conducted at SMA Negeri 2 Cimalaka. The instruments used in this study were questionnaires and tests. This study's approach, which was integrated with GeoGebra, can be used as an alternative to learning mathematics in schools. It can be developed with other approaches according to problems in mathematics.

Integrating Usability into Software Engineering Course Projects

This study presents a case study of the integration of usability evaluation into the development of task based information system prototypes in undergraduate software engineering course projects within a problem-based learning (PBL) approach. As part of the course, usability evaluation was integrated into the software development process, and the usability evaluation performance (UEP) of the projects was assessed in terms of the following criteria: effectiveness, efficiency and problem validity. It also analyzed the problem solution rate of the projects and their correlation between UEP criteria. Additionally, the study in-depth analyzed the students' final conclusions regarding the design process. The relationship between UEP criteria and the problem solving rate was examined using Spearman correlation analysis. In addition, final conclusions and problem solving behaviors were analyzed through document and thematic analysis techniques. The results supported that there is a significant correlation between usability evaluation criteria and problem solving rate. The main themes that emerged regarding usability problem solving behaviors were navigation design, error handling, database connection, algorithm design, search matching, system-user communication design and others. Final conclusions showed that project teams gained valuable insights into user-centered design, solved critical usability problems and improved their prototype design. It can be concluded that the integration of usability into software engineering education using the above approach contributes to students' understanding of user-centered interaction design.

Designing Problem-Based Learning With a Flipped Classroom Design in Appreciating Fiction Prose

The appreciation of fictional prose can be used to shape the ethics and morals of students. Various approaches and learning models have been developed to help sharpen students' skills in appreciating fictional prose, although satisfactory results have not been achieved overall. Therefore, the aim of this research is to design a learning concept that has the potential to enhance students' capabilities in understanding and appreciating fictional prose. The research data is sourced from 12 articles obtained through Google Scholar, Sage Journals, Taylor and Francis, ProQuest, and Scopus databases. The articles used as data sources are related to the appreciation of fiction prose, flipped classrooms, and problem-based learning. Data collection and analysis were conducted using the read-note-analyze technique. The research findings affirm that a problem-based learning approach, combined with the implementation of a flipped classroom design, holds significant potential for improving students' appreciation skills of fictional prose and can be efficiently applied in the learning process. Furthermore, this model accommodates the use of technology in learning and facilitates group work among students.

Enhancing Critical Thinking Skills of Prospective Elementary School Teachers: A Study on Problem-Based Learning Approach

Critical thinking is a higher-order thinking skill that must be fostered during learning. This study aims to provide insights into the achievement of critical thinking skills among students through the implementation of the problem-based learning model in the geometry course. The research methodology employed in this study is descriptive in nature. The participants consisted of 40 Primary School Teacher Education students, who were divided into high, medium, and low-ability groups. Data were collected through written tests and observations. Twelve indicators of critical thinking skills were measured, with ten indicators assessed through written tests and two indicators through observations. The data were analyzed using quantitative descriptive analysis techniques. The study's findings indicate that students' critical thinking skills, as assessed through tests and observations, are considered good in the high, medium, and low groups. This is evident from the average percentages of 83.16% for the high group, 76.40% for the medium group, and 72.08% for the low group, respectively. Students in the high-ability group demonstrated a significantly excellent level of critical thinking skills. In conclusion, applying the PBL model significantly enhances students' critical thinking abilities.

Understanding Problem-Based Learning and its Application in Learning Mathematics Concepts Among Pre-Service Teachers

Learning to teach mathematics has become crucial since its application in real life cannot go unmentioned. The desire of mathematics education researchers to make mathematics concepts easier for pre-service teachers to easily understand has attracted attention. This has become indispensable since after college, pre-service teachers are deployed from K-12 to assist learners in understanding mathematics concepts. The study aimed to ascertain how improvement in the learning of mathematics concepts using the Problem-based learning (PBL) approach could be understood and/or explained among pre-service teachers. This was viewed in two folds: how improvement in learning outcomes using the PBL approach could be explained; and how pre-service teachers’ disposition about the PBL could be explained/understood. Exploratory case study design involving qualitative and quantitative data was concurrently gathered and used. This involved the use of data collection instruments such as focus group discussion, pre-post-test scores, PBL observation protocol, and PBL disposition questionnaire. The study showed that the PBL method improved the learning of mathematics concepts among pre-service teachers. Pre-service teachers also showed a positive disposition (interest, belief, and attitude) toward the PBL intervention. The authors advocated for the conduct of a longitudinal study to understand the direction of change over time.

Sociocultural factors affecting first-year medical students' adjustment to a PBL program at an African medical school.

Besides regulatory learning skills, learning also requires students to relate to their social context and negotiate it as they transition and adjust to medical training. As such, there is a need to consider and explore the role of social and cultural aspects in student learning, particularly in problem-based learning, where the learning paradigm differs from what most students have previously experienced. In this article, we report on the findings of a study exploring first-year medical students' experiences during the first semester of an undergraduate problem-based learning medical program at an African medical school. We employed a qualitative case study approach using in-depth interviews with 23 first-year medical students. Participants ranged in age from 18 to 25 years. All students were bi/multilingual (some spoke three to five languages), with English as the learning language. We conducted an inductive thematic analysis to systematically identify and analyze patterns in the data using the Braun and Clarke framework. Before medical school, students worked hard to compete for admission to medical school, were primarily taught using a teacher-centered approach, and preferred working alone. At the beginning of medical school, students found it challenging to understand the problem-based learning process, the role of the case, speaking and working effectively in a group, managing a heavy workload, and taking increased responsibility for their learning. By the end of the first semester, most students were handling the workload better, were more comfortable with their peers and facilitators, and appreciated the value of the problem-based learning approach. Our study highlights the importance of interrogating contextual sociocultural factors that could cause tension when implementing problem-based learning in non-western medical schools. Adjustment to problem-based learning requires a conceptual and pedagogic shift towards learner-centered practice, particularly concerning self-direction, the role of the case, and collaborative learning. As such, there is a need to develop and implement research-informed learning development programs that enable students to reflect on their sociocultural beliefs and practices, and enhance their regulatory learning competence to optimize meaningful and early engagement with the problem-based learning process.

KAJIAN KEPERLUAN KANDUNGAN MODUL ASAS PENDEKATAN PEMBELAJARAN BERASASKAN MASALAH

In research on module development, a needs analysis study is conducted to ensure that the module produced can meet the needs and specifications of users. This study was conducted to identify the content requirements of the problem-based learning approach module, in an effort to improve the level of teacher mastery related to the problem-based learning approach. In order to create a digital module that can meet the needs of teachers as users, a needs analysis was conducted on five school teachers in the Kubang Pasu district. Data collection was done through semi-structured interviews and purposive sampling techniques were used in sample selection. Qualitative data from the interviews were categorized and analyzed to identify themes and make sense of the data. Data analysis has identified four main themes which are: (1) Teacher knowledge related to problem-based learning approach, (2) Teacher skills related to problem-based learning approach, (3) Teacher attitude related to problem-based learning approach, and (4) Characteristics The module expected by the teacher is simple, easy to understand and includes a demonstration video of the implementation of the problem-based learning approach. The needs analysis shows that the basic digital module of the problem-based learning approach has the potential to be developed. Apart from the four main themes identified, the suggestions and specifications obtained from the interviews provided useful information for developing the module content. These findings will be used to design and develop module content in the next phase. This discovery is expected to help produce a digital teaching module that is able to give ideas to teachers to apply a problem-based learning approach in the teaching and learning process, and further ensure a positive impact on students.

Using staged teaching and assessment approaches to facilitate inter-university collaboration and problem-based learning.

This article describes the segmented module design and problem-based learning approaches employed to enable parts of a higher education environmental health module (course) to be shared between universities in Wales, Northern Ireland, and Australia. The module requires students to identify the needs and assets of a community then design community-based interventions to address problems and undertake an evaluation of those interventions. Accreditation body and the degree program learning outcome requirements in the UK and Australia were found to hold many comparable knowledge, skills, and graduate attribute criteria, eliminating a potential barrier for international learning and teaching collaboration between higher education institutions. Instead, barriers to collaboration were associated with institutional issues and practicalities such as timetabling and assessment requirements. Taking a segmented approach to module design allowed staged and varied levels of collaboration between participating institutions, all delivering modules (courses) with similar learning outcomes. This provided a more sustainable environment to facilitate shared learning and teaching and fostered closer relations between programs, within these constraining factors. Students using problem-based learning and its group-working component exhibited the development of leadership, communication, and independent learning skills.
