Oral rehydration in diarrhea: from history to current guidelines. A review

Acute gastroenteritis (AGE) is usually defined as a change in stool consistency (liquid or unformed) and/or an increase in the frequency of bowel movements, which can also be accompanied by vomiting and fever. Fever increases the metabolic rate by more than 1.5 times; for every 1°C increase in body temperature, fluid loss increases by 10%. AGE is a common cause of morbidity and mortality among infants and children. The prognosis is favorable if the condition is recognized promptly and appropriate treatment is started. The main goal of AGE therapy is to restore water balance and prevent dehydration, which can be achieved with an oral rehydration solution. The composition and proportion of the components of rehydration agents are described in the guidelines of the European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology Hepatology and Nutrition, of which the Russian Society of Pediatric Gastroenterologists is a collective member, and such agents are fully consistent with the balanced formulations of RehydroStandard and Rehydron Bio rehydration agents. The latter includes the probiotic strain Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, well studied and recommended by the European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology Hepatology and Nutrition for acute intestinal infections since this strain reduces the duration and severity of diarrhea according to the results of studies. Rehydron Bio and RehydroStandard can be recommended for use in clinical pediatric practice.

Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG-derived extracellular vesicles promote wound healing via miR-21-5p-mediated re-epithelization and angiogenesis

Extracellular vesicles (EVs), especially those derived from stem cells, have emerged as a novel treatment for promoting wound healing in regenerative medicine. However, the clinical application of mammalian cells-derived EVs is hindered by their high cost and low yields. Inspired by the ability of EVs to mediate interkingdom communication, we explored the therapeutic potential of EVs released by the probiotic strain Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) in skin wound healing and elucidated the underlying mechanism involved. Using full-thickness skin wound-healing mouse models, we found that LGG-EVs accelerated wound healing procedures, including increased re-epithelialization and promoted angiogenesis. Using in vitro experiments, we further demonstrated that LGG-EVs boosted the proliferation and migration capacities of both epithelial and endothelial cells, as well as promoted endothelial tube formation. miRNA profiling analysis revealed that miR-21-5p was highly enriched in LGG-EVs and LGG-EV treatment significantly increased miR-21-5p level in recipient cells. Mechanically, LGG-EVs induced regulatory effects via miR-21-5p mediated metabolic signaling rewiring. Our results suggest that EVs derived from LGG could serve as a promising candidate for accelerating wound healing and possibly for treating chronic and impaired healing conditions.Graphical abstract

Randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled multicenter phase III study of prevention of irinotecan-induced diarrhea by a probiotic mixture containing Bifidobacterium BB-12®Lactobacillus rhamnosus LGG® in colorectal cancer patients.

The incidence of irinotecan-induced diarrhea varies between 60-90%, by which the incidence of severe diarrhea is 20-40%. The objective of this phase III trial was to determine the effectiveness of the probiotic mixture containing Bifidobacterium, BB-12® and Lactobacillus rhamnosus, LGG® in the prophylaxis of irinotecan-induced diarrhea in metastatic colorectal cancer patients due to a reduction in the activity of intestinal beta-D-glucuronidase. From March 2016 to May 2022, a total of 242 patients with colorectal cancer starting a new line of irinotecan-based therapy were registered to the study in 11 cancer centers in Slovakia. Patients were randomized in a ratio 1:1 to probiotic formula vs. placebo that was administered for 6 weeks. Each capsule of Probio-Tec® BG-Vcap-6.5 contained 2.7x109 colony-forming units (CFU) of 2 lyophilized probiotic strains Bifidobacterium, BB-12® (50%) and Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, LGG® (50%). Administration of probiotics compared to placebo was not associated with a significant reduction of grade 3/4 diarrhea (placebo arm 11.8% vs. probiotic arm 7.9%, p=0.38). Neither the overall incidence of diarrhea (46.2% vs. 41.2%, p=0.51) nor the incidence of enterocolitis (3.4% vs. 0.9%, p=0.37) was different in the placebo vs. probiotic arm. Subgroup analysis revealed that patients with colostomy had higher incidence of any diarrhea and grade 3/4 diarrhea in the placebo arm compared to the probiotic arm (48.5% vs. 22.2%, p=0.06 and 15.2% vs. 0%, p=0.06, respectively). Moreover, patients on probiotic arm had significantly better diarrhea-free survival (HR = 0.41, 95%CI 0.18 - 0.95, p=0.05) and needed less loperamide (p=0.01) compared to patients on placebo arm. We did not observe any infection caused by probiotic strains used in this study. This study failed to achieve its primary endpoint, and results suggest a lack of benefit of administered probiotic formula for the prevention of irinotecan-induced diarrhea. However, subgroup analysis suggests a possible benefit in patients with colostomy.

Unlocking the Power of Probiotics: A Comprehensive Review on Safeguarding Hospitalised Patients from Clostridium Difficle Infection

Antibiotic-associated diarrhea (AAD) is a commoncomplication of antibiotic therapy, with Clostridiumdifficile infection (CDI) being a major cause of severeAAD. CDI is associated with high morbidity, mortality,and healthcare costs. The administration of probiotics isa promising strategy for the prevention of AAD and CDI,as they can create a favorable gut environment andalter the composition of the intestinal flora. Thissystematic review evaluated the use of probiotics inpreventing CDI in hospitalized adult patients. Thereview of 12 randomized controlled trials involving3,586 patients found that probiotics reduced theincidence of CDI in hospitalized adult patients by up to70%. Specifically, the probiotic strains Lactobacillusrhamnosus GG and Saccharomyces boulardii werefound to be effective in preventing CDI. However,further research is needed to establish optimal dosingregimens and to identify the most effective probioticstrains for CDI prevention. Nonetheless, the use ofprobiotics appears to be a promising strategy forreducing the incidence of CDI in hospitalized adultpatients receiving antibiotics.

Advanced "Green" Prebiotic Composite of Bacterial Cellulose/Pullulan Based on Synthetic Biology-Powered Microbial Coculture Strategy.

Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a biopolymer produced by different microorganisms, but in biotechnological practice, Komagataeibacter xylinus is used. The micro- and nanofibrillar structure of BC, which forms many different-sized pores, creates prerequisites for the introduction of other polymers into it, including those synthesized by other microorganisms. The study aims to develop a cocultivation system of BC and prebiotic producers to obtain BC-based composite material with prebiotic activity. In this study, pullulan (PUL) was found to stimulate the growth of the probiotic strain Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG better than the other microbial polysaccharides gellan and xanthan. BC/PUL biocomposite with prebiotic properties was obtained by cocultivation of Komagataeibacter xylinus and Aureobasidium pullulans, BC and PUL producers respectively, on molasses medium. The inclusion of PUL in BC is proved gravimetrically by scanning electron microscopy and by Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy. Cocultivation demonstrated a composite effect on the aggregation and binding of BC fibers, which led to a significant improvement in mechanical properties. The developed approach for “grafting” of prebiotic activity on BC allows preparation of environmentally friendly composites of better quality.

The role of yogurt enriched with LGG culture (Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG) in dental caries prevention

Introduction/Objective. Contemporary tendencies suggest that probiotics can significantly reduce the prevalence of caries in children, so it can be considered that they have a positive effect on general and oral health. Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) is a probiotic culture of particular importance in preventive dentistry. The aim was to assess the effects of consumption of probiotic strain Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG on the dental plaque accumulation in children with mixed dentition. Methods. Research included 90 children with mixed dentition (5?12 years old). The first study group consumed 200 ml of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG-enriched yogurt (B-Activ LGG, Dukat) daily for a period of 14 days, while the remaining 30 formed the second study group who consumed 200 ml of yogurt (Jogurt 1.5% milk fat, Imlek) with manually added powder from probiotic capsule (Wayaforte LGG capsule, Medis) daily for 14 days. The control group consisted of 30 children who had regular diet during examination period. Silness?Loe plaque index and saliva pH (pH-Fix-0-14, Macherey-Nagel) were determined at baseline and also upon intervention completion. Results. An increase in pH values was observed in both study groups. In general sample, there is a significant decrease of mean plaque index values (p < 0.001). Both study groups had significant decrease of mean plaque index values on the baseline and after 14 days consumption of yogurt. In the control group the number of subjects with decrease plaque index values did not correlate and no association was found. Conclusion. Consistent consumption of LGG culture-enriched yogurt inhibits dental film accumulation and promotes saliva pH increase in children with mixed dentition.

Development of Herbal Bio-yoghurt Powder using Freeze Drying Technology

A study was undertaken to produce freeze-dried herbal bio-yoghurt with Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus, Streptococcus thermophilus, and an additional probiotic strain Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG. Aqueous extract of licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) at different concentration levels (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5%) was incorporated into the yoghurt, to study the effect of licorice as a prebiotic in promoting the growth of yoghurt starters and Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG. The incorporation of licorice extract at different levels positively affected the total viable count of the bio-yoghurt. Antioxidant properties of the herbal bio-yoghurt were analysed and it ranged between 39.26±0.02 and 68.13±0.04% when compared to control yoghurt (22.08±0.03%). The optimum level of incorporation of licorice extract was standardized based on the physico-chemical, functional, and viability of microbes. Among the five different levels of incorporation of herbal extract, 2% level was ideal based on the sensory and physicochemical parameters for the preparation of herbal bio-yoghurt. On freezedrying the herbal bio-yoghurt with trehalose and lactose as cryoprotectants, trehalose showed more promising results in protecting the viability of microbes during freeze-drying when compared to lactose, and there was no significant difference between two cryoprotectants and control concerning acidity, pH, moisture and ash of the freeze-dried herbal bio-yoghurt.

Fermented Cranberry Fortified Buckwheat Product—Phenolic Composition, Antioxidant and Microbiological Properties

This study determined the effect of fermentation by Fresco DVS 1010 starter culture with added probiotic strain Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG and potentially probiotic isolate Lactobacillus plantarum HM1, at fermentation times (0, 8 h) and cold storage period (24 h, 4th day, 7th day, 14th day), on microbial parameters, pH changes, total phenolic content, phenolic compounds profile, and antioxidant activity of buckwheat water- and milk-based mashes, flavored with cranberries and unflavored. The tested starter Fresco culture effectively fermented the buckwheat products and the viable cell counts of potentially probiotic bacteria were sufficient to demonstrate the health-promoting properties of final products. Lactic acid bacteria had a positive impact on total phenolic compound content, total flavonoid content, and antioxidant activity of buckwheat mashes, whereby final values (14 days) were higher by about 16.9–130.8%, 13.4–37.7%, and 14.5–145.9%, respectively, in comparison to initial values (0 h). Seven phenolic acids (gallic, protocatechuic, vanillic, syringic, caffeic, p-coumaric, and ferulic) and two flavonoids (rutin and quercetin) in buckwheat mashes were measured during the experimental period. The content of quercetin, gallic, and protocatechuic acids increased and, conversely, p-coumaric acid decreased, in all products. Prepared buckwheat fermented products have the potential to meet the criteria for potentially functional foods.

Використання розчину для оральної регідратації (оральної регідратаційної солі) з додаванням пробіотичного штаму для лікування дітей із гострою інфекційною патологією

Актуальність. На тлі гострої інфекційної патології в дітей існує ймовірність розвитку дегідратації, для ліквідації якої можливо використовувати розчини для оральної регідратації (оральна регідратаційна сіль — ОРС). При призначенні антибактеріальної терапії в 11–40 % дітей спостерігається антибіотик-асоційована діарея (ААД). Для профілактики розвитку ААД рекомендують застосовувати пробіотичні препарати. Мета: вивчити ефективність та переносимість розчину для оральної регідратації (Регідрон Біо) для підтримання водно-електролітного балансу та запобігання дисбіотичним порушенням у дітей із гострими інфекційними захворюваннями. Матеріали та методи. Було проведено спостереження за 60 дітьми віком від 3 до 14 років, які перебували на стаціонарному лікуванні на клінічній базі кафедри дитячих інфекційних хвороб НМУ ім. О.О. Богомольця й отримували антибактеріальну терапію. Основну групу становили 30 дітей, яким у комплексній терапії призначався розчин ОРС Регідрон Біо. Групу порівняння становили 30 дітей, які отримували стандартну терапію й компенсація втрат рідини яким проводилась традиційними засобами (чай, питна вода тощо). Результати. Серед симптомів зневоднення найчастіше виявлялись спрага та сухість слизових оболонок, які були присутні в 40–63 % хворих при надходженні до стаціонару. Відновлення водно-електролітного балансу за рахунок введення води та основних мінеральних речовин забезпечує швидке зникнення симптомів дегідратації. Діарея на тлі застосування антибактеріальної терапії спостерігалась у 10,0 % хворих, додаткове введення пробіотичного штаму Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG запобігало розвитку цього ускладнення. Висновки. Застосування оральної регідратаційної терапії препаратом ОРС Регідрон Біо є ефективним засобом корекції водно-електролітних порушень при гострих інфекційних захворюваннях у дітей. Наявність у складі ОРС Регідрон Біо пробіотичного штаму Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG дозволяє застосовувати його для профілактики ААД у дітей, які отримують антибіотики при інфекційних діареях.

Пробиотическая терапия антибиотик-ассоциированной диареи у детей

Антибиотик-ассоциированная диарея (AAД) считается одним из самых распространенных осложнений антибиотикотерапии на амбулаторном и госпитальном этапах лечения у детей. Ведущими факторами риска развития AAД являются нарушение колонизационной резистентности кишечного микробиома или непосредственное раздражение антибиотиками (АБ) слизистой оболочки желудочно-кишечного тракта. Тяжелые формы AAД, известные как псевдомембранозный колит, ассоциированы с инфицированием Clostridium difficile, который является одним из лидеров в структуре нозокомиальных и внегоспитальных инфекций и характеризуется значительной резистентностью к медикаментозному лечению. Исследованы альтернативные стратегии лечения, а именно рассмотрены возможности адъювантной пробиотической терапии, которая может способствовать нормализации нарушенного вследствие воздействия АБ баланса индигенной микробиоты и быть целесообразной в профилактике развития и лечении AAД и Clostridium difficile-инфекции (CDI). Проведен обзор литературы по оценке клинической эффективности профилактики и лечения AAД и CDI пробиотическими препаратами и определенными пробиотическими штаммами. Поиск литературы осуществлялся с помощью электронных баз данных (Scopus, Web of Science, MedLine, The Cochrane Library, EMBASE, Global Health, CyberLeninka, РИНЦ). Представлена общая характеристика пробиотических препаратов, рассмотрены механизмы действия пробиотиков и проанализированы основные эффекты влияния пробиотических штаммов. Систематизированы и проанализированы данные рандомизированных контролируемых исследований, представлены доказательства эффективности профилактики и лечения AAД и CDI с помощью пробиотических препаратов. Проанализированы штамм-специфические эффекты пробиотиков в профилактике и лечении AAД и CDI у детей. Рассмотрены индивидуальные свойства пробиотического штамма Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG. Представлена сравнительная характеристика доказательной базы целесообразности применения пробиотиков в определенных клинических ситуациях. Даны рекомендации по оценке возможности применения пробиотических штаммов и выбора конкретного штамма пробиотика для профилактики и лечения AAД и CDI у детей, получающих антибиотики.

Is it possible to enhance immune response after vaccination? The role of a probiotic with a proven positive effect on all components of the immune system

Preventive vaccination is currently the most affordable and economical way to reduce morbidity and mortality from many infections, improve quality and human life expectancy with an almost ideal balance of benefits and risks among all medical procedures. The article deals with the reasons for variability of the immune response caused by vaccines, between individuals and between populations, which is of fundamental importance for human health. The authors have presented data indicating a key role of the gut microbiota in the control of the immune response to vaccination. Particular attention is paid to the microbial diversity in different loci of the body. The role of microorganisms in the proper functioning of the body and the formation of a number of pathological conditions is described. Most modern vaccines are live-attenuated, killed / inactivated or subunit (recombinant) vaccines, and they are designed for the parenteral route of administration. Most of these vaccines elicit a weak immune response, especially in the mucous membranes, due to the route of administration and are associated with weak cell-mediated immunity. Therefore, mechanisms that can enhance virus-specific vaccine immunity in infants and children are required, such as the use of more potent or selective immunity-enhancing adjuvants. Some probiotic strains may be considered as promising vaccine adjuvants. This article evaluates the recent clinical studies of probiotics used to enhance vaccine-specific immunity in adults and infants. The present-day knowledge on the role of the probiotic strain Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG with the aim of activating immunity after vaccination are presented.

Preliminary evaluation of potential prebiotic capacity of selected legumes and seed mucilage on the probiotic strain Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG

The characterization of the prebiotic potential of legumes and mucilage are essential and crucial for the development of symbiotic food products. The aim of the present study was to compare and to determine the prebiotic capacity of selected legumes, namely adzuki bean, mung bean, black cowpea, and mucilages from chia seed and flaxseed on the growth of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG. Resistance towards acid, pancreatin hydrolysis, and the prebiotic scores of the tested substances was determined based on growth promotion after 24 h of incubation. Results revealed that flaxseed mucilage was more resistant against hydrolysis by acid (1.47%) and pancreatin (2.64%) compared to the other samples (5.64 – 18.06% for acid and 10.34 – 15.57% for pancreatin). The relative prebiotic scores for flaxseed mucilage and black cowpea were 98% and 94%, respectively, which were higher than commercial prebiotics including inulin, fructooligosaccharides, and isomaltooligosaccharides. The optimum concentrations of flaxseed mucilage and black cowpea during 36 h of fermentation were 0.8% and 0.4% (w/v), respectively. The findings indicated that flaxseed mucilage was partially digested during gastrointestinal transit and it promotes the growth of the L. rhamnosus GG. The potential prebiotic capacity of flaxseed mucilage and its symbiotic relationship with L. rhamnosus GG suggests that they can be incorporated together for the development of functional foods.

Influence of sea buckthorn juice addition on the growth of microbial food cultures

Abstract The aim of the article was to investigate the effect of sea buckthorn juice addition on the growth of microbial cultures in growth medium and juice mixtures. Pure sea buckthorn juice was found to inhibit the growth of all 11 monitored microbial cultures. Lactobacillus plantarum CCM 7039, Lactobacillus plantarum K816, Lactobacillus brevis CCM 1815 and, to a lesser extent, the probiotic strain Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, grew in a growth medium containing a 25 % addition of sea buckthorn juice. Lactobacillus plantarum K816 and Lactobacillus brevis CCM 1815 grew better in this mixture than in pure growth medium. Moreover, we focused on finding a suitable ratio of sea buckthorn and apple juice for Lactobacillus plantarum CCM 7039, leading to malolactic fermentation, which results in an increase in the pH value and an improvement in the sensory properties of juices. The intention was to incorporate the highest possible addition of sea buckthorn juice while maintaining the viability of Lactobacillus plantarum CCM 7039 for malolactic fermentation to occur. The best results were achieved using 40 % sea buckthorn juice. Practical application of the results points to the possibility of preparing a fermented fruit beverage and a dairy product containing sea buckthorn juice. The results of this work extend the current options of sea buckthorn juice processing increasing thus the consumption of healthy juice.

Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG and Biochemical Agents Enrich the Shelf Life of Fresh-Cut Bell Pepper (Capsicum annuum L. var. grossum (L.) Sendt).

This work analyzed the individual and combined effects of biochemical additives and probiotic strain Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG on red and yellow fresh-cut bell pepper (R- and Y-FCBP, respectively) stored at two different temperatures (4 °C and 15 °C) for 15 days. The results revealed that the combined application of biochemical additives and L. rhamnosus GG inhibited the colonization of total bacterial counts (25.10%), total Salmonella counts (38.32%), total Listeria counts (23.75%), and total fungal counts (61.90%) in FCBP. Total bacterial colonization was found to be higher in R-FCBP (1188.09 ± 9.25 CFU g−1) than Y-FCBP (863.96 ± 7.21 CFU g−1). The storage at 4 °C was prevented 35.38% of microbial colonization in FCBP. Importantly, the L. rhamnosus GG count remained for up to 12 days. Moreover, the combined inoculation of the biochemical additives and L. rhamnosus GG treatments (T3) maintained the quality of R- and Y-FCBP for up to 12 days at 4 °C without any loss of antioxidant properties. This work reports the successful utilization of L. rhamnosus GG as a preservative agent for maintaining the quality of FCBP by preventing microbial colonization.

Objectives: This double-blind pilot randomized placebo-controlled trial examined the possible effect of the probiotic strain Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG ATCC53103 (LGG) on symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), health-related quality of life (QoL), and serum levels of cytokines in children and adolescents with ADHD.Methods: This trial evaluated 32 drug-naive children and adolescents aged between four and 17 years with a diagnosis of ADHD. The study subjects were randomly assigned to either the group that received LGG or the group that received the placebo. Assessments, comprising the ADHD Parent-Report Rating Scale-IV: Home Version; the Child Self-Report and Parent Proxy-Report of the Pediatric Quality of Life InventoryTM (PedsQLTM) 4.0 Generic Core Scale; the Parent Form (CBCL/6-18) and the Teacher Report Form (TRF) of the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) for ages 6–18 of the Achenbach System of Empirically Based Assessment (ASEBA); and the serum cytokines; were compared between the groups at the baseline and after 3 months.Results: Thirty-five participants were randomized, with 32 completing the study (91.4% retention). There was a significant improvement in the PedsQL Child Self-Report Total Score after 3 months of treatment in the probiotic (p = 0.021, d = 0.53), whereas there was no significant improvement in the placebo group (p = 0.563, d = 0.04). The results of psychometric parameters assessed by parents and teachers were not so straightforward. There were statistically significant differences in the levels of serum cytokines between the groups after the 3-month treatment period: IL-6 in both the probiotic (p = 0.004, d = 0.73) and the placebo groups (p = 0.035, d = 0.94); IL-10 (p = 0.035, d = 0.6); IL-12 p70 (p = 0.025, d = 0.89); and TNF-α (p = 0.046, d = 0.64) in the probiotic group only.Conclusions: Children and adolescents with ADHD who received LGG supplementation reported better health-related QoL compared to their peers who received the placebo. This suggests that LGG supplementation could be beneficial. But results with psychometric tests conducted by parents and teachers as well as differences in the levels of inflammatory cytokines were ambiguous. Based on these results, we propose some study modifications: a longer observation period (6–12 months); inclusion of more children's self-report assessments; recruitment of non-drug naive patients and the possible omission of serum cytokines measurements.Clinical Trial Registration: Medical Ethics Committee (UKC-MB-KME-19-06/16).

Characterization of potentially probiotic lactic acid bacteria and bifidobacteria isolated from human colostrum

Breast milk is the main source of nutrition for infants; it contains considerable microflora that can be transmitted to the infant endogenously or by breastfeeding, and it plays an important role in the maturation and development of the immune system. In this study, we isolated and identified lactic acid bacteria (LAB) from human colostrum, and screened 2 strains with probiotic potential. The LAB isolated from 40 human colostrum samples belonged to 5 genera: Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, Streptococcus, Enterococcus, and Staphylococcus. We also isolated Propionibacterium and Actinomyces. We identified a total of 197 strains of LAB derived from human colostrum based on their morphology and 16S rRNA sequence, among them 8 strains of Bifidobacterium and 10 strains of Lactobacillus, including 3 Bifidobacterium species and 4 Lactobacillus species. The physiological and biochemical characteristics of strains with good probiotic characteristics were evaluated. The tolerances of some of the Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus strains to gastrointestinal fluid and bile salts were evaluated in vitro, using the probiotic strains Bifidobacterium lactis BB12 and Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG as controls. Among them, B. lactis Probio-M8 and L. rhamnosus Probio-M9 showed survival rates of 97.25 and 78.33% after digestion for 11 h in artificial gastrointestinal juice, and they exhibited growth delays of 0.95 and 1.87 h, respectively, in 0.3% bile salts. These two strains have the potential for application as probiotics and will facilitate functional studies of probiotics in breast milk and the development of human milk-derived probiotics.
