Comments on “Accountable and Privacy-Enhanced Access Control in Wireless Sensor Networks”

In a recent paper (IEEE Trans. Wireless Commun., vol. 14, no. 1, 2015), He et al. proposed an accountable and privacy-enhanced access control (APAC) protocol, which aimed to provide privacy for honest users against network owners and accountability against misbehaving users without the involvement of any trusted third party. However, the level of trust on the network owner has not been clearly defined in He et al. ’s paper, and we demonstrate in this letter that in the case where the network owners cannot be trusted to correctly generate the system parameters, then the APAC protocol cannot ensure user privacy.

Privacy Preserving with Enhanced Access Control for Distributed Data Dissemination in WSN

Dissemination is a service provided for WSN to update the deployed sensor nodes online by using over air programming through radio communication. Since centralized data dissemination approach suffers from the limitations of single point of failure lack of scalability and security they have been replaced by distributed approach. In distributed data dissemination, the dissemination privileges are delegated by the network owners to the network users to disseminate the data items on their behalf. In distributed environment network owner and network users are two different types of entities. In an effective and secure data dissemination system a Network user needs to maintain his/her privacy from the network owner and network owners need to track and pinpoint the misbehaved network user. So it is required to provide the privacy to the network users, provide varying access control privileges according to the nature of network user and ensure accountability for every action carried out by network users In this paper we propose novel (PEAC) Privacy enhanced Access Control key management algorithm that enforces privacy and access control among the network owners and network users. It also provides the accountability by tracing the network owner to pinpoint the misbehaved network user. The feasibility and efficiency of PEAC scheme has been done by performing the in depth analysis to identify its possible strength and weakness.

Accountable and Privacy-Enhanced Access Control in Wireless Sensor Networks

In general, owners and users of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are different entities. A user may want to hide his/her data access privacy from anyone else including the network owner and, at the same time, users who misbehave need to be identified. Such requirements necessitate privacy-preserving and accountable access control. In this paper, we develop a novel protocol, named APAC , to satisfy this need. First, APAC can enforce strict access control so that the sensed data is only accessible by the authorized users. Second, APAC offers sophisticated user privacy protection. Third, misbehaving users or owners can be audited and pinpointed. Last but not least, it does not rely on the existence of a trusted third party, and thus is more feasible in practice. The feasibility of the APAC is demonstrated by experiments on resource-limited mobile devices and sensor platforms.
