Hillview

Hillview is a distributed spreadsheet for browsing very large datasets that cannot be handled by a single machine. As a spread-sheet, Hillview provides a high degree of interactivity that permits data analysts to explore information quickly along many dimensions while switching visualizations on a whim. To provide the required responsiveness, Hillview introduces visualization sketches, or vizketches , as a simple idea to produce compact data visualizations. Vizketches combine algorithmic techniques for data summarization with computer graphics principles for efficient rendering. While simple, vizketches are effective at scaling the spreadsheet by parallelizing computation, reducing communication, providing progressive visualizations, and offering precise accuracy guarantees. Using Hillview running on eight servers, we can navigate and visualize datasets of tens of billions of rows and trillions of cells, much beyond the published capabilities of competing systems.

An Overview of Modeling Yarn’s 3D Geometric Configuration

Modeling the 3D geometric configuration of yarn is the base of building the 3D fabric structure. The surfaces of the yarns are modeled by many facets. To improve the efficiency of modeling, 3D yarn is usually designed by Bezier curve, spline curve or B-spline curve on the principle of Computer Graphics. The paper reviews different 3D modeling methods for single yarn from the view of cross-section and central line. Some improvements for a better visual effect such as inserting twist and hairiness are illustrated as well. Based on the single yarn, the folded yarn and some fancy yarns can also be modeled in 3D space as long as the cross-sections of the control sections of the component single yarn are determined. Applications of the various 3D yarns are demonstrated. The advantages and the drawbacks of various methods are explained and compared as well. Comparatively speaking, modeling technology based on spline curve is more convenient and flexible, perhaps it is the most popular tool since it is capable of designing different kinds of yarns mentioned above and gets the maximum support from the different developing platforms such as OpenGL, 3DS-MAX, Solid Works CAD, etc.

Application of Motion Capture Instruments in Modern Sports

Motion capture system is a kind of high technology equipment that is used for measuring accurately the motion condition of moving objects in 3D space. Based on the principle of computer graphics (sensor), it record the motion condition of moving objects (tracker) in the form of image through a few video capture device (sensor) arranged in the space, and then make use of computer to deal with the image data, getting space coordinates (X, Y, Z) of unit of different objects (tracker) on different time.The paper elaborates the concept, classification and characteristics of Motion Capture System, and the roles this system played in sports as well as the typical application in sports projects. It is believed that Motion Capture System will be widely applied in the sports fields in order to give better service to the development of sports in our country.

Study on Statistical Method of Steel Bridge Parts Information Based on Three-Dimensional CAD

Parts information of steel bridge with tens of thousands of parts is difficult to be managed and be executed statistics. On the platform of three-dimensional CAD systems, steel bridge node is the study object in this paper, according to the assembly relationship of all parts in the three-dimensional assembly model, the parts list, quantity, geometrical information and weight of the parts of the steel bridge nodes are extracted from a three-dimensional model by the application interface provided by three-dimensional CAD systems. On the basis of geometrical information of the parts, the minimum boundary dimension of the parts is computed by use of the principle of computer graphics. The method can rapidly and accurately obtain parts information, and can provide basis for assembly process and processing technology.

Two in the middle

Many Universities and Colleges are building interdisciplinary programs between engineering and fine arts that focus on games, special effects, animation and other areas that require interdisciplinary efforts. This is in response to the needs of the entertainment industries. The video game and 3D animation businesses fundamentally involve computer scientists and artists working closely together. The Entertainment Arts and Engineering (EAE) program (founded in 2007) is an undergraduate interdisciplinary program at the University of Utah (UofU). Students pursuing an animation or computer science degree may enroll in the program as a means of focusing their education on digital arts and entertainment. Two courses taught at the UofU with curriculum in the middle of the continuum between the two departments are the courses: Digital Character Production and Machinima. These courses provide an extraordinary applied learning experience for students to combine learning concepts that are not commonly taught together. The curriculums are designed to teach students to breakdown extremely complex problems, requiring understanding from both disciplines, into manageable segments that allow easy understanding of diverse concepts from computer graphics principles to sculptural ideology and from graphic algorithms to film/storytelling. It is a process that provides a direct view of the correlations of the critical concepts from each of the disciplines. This paper presents our insights from teaching and reviewing these two classes.

Kinetic Monte Carlo simulation of film morphologies at the initial stages

The morphologies at the initial stages of thin film growth were studied by using Kinetic Monte Carlo techniques. A more efficient model was used to calculate the activity energy. The model involves incident atom attachment, diffusion, detachment from the surface, detached atom returning, and dimer diffusion. We edited a set of software of the model and simulated the surface morphologies by the principle of computer graphics. It is shown that the nucleuses formed at the initial stages and the surface morphologies at high temperatures are very different from those at low temperatures. The later surface growth depends on the nucleuses at the initial stages. The mechanism results from the atom thermal movement, the temperature determines the diffusion ability, and the deposition rate determines the diffusion time.

How to include visuals and interactivities in an educational computer graphics repository

The rising interest in repositories for educational material consolidates efforts of the diversified educational community. Developers, teachers, and designers have recognized the need for collaboration in order to create the best possible learning objects, and, moreover, to preserve and reuse them. In computer graphics (CG) education, a first step has been made with the CGEMS (CG Educational Material Server; SIGGRAPH’03, San Diego, California, USA, July 2003, http://cgems.inesc.pt) repository. Repositories typically lack in support for visual and interactive learning objects. Yet, they are an integral part of CG education. In this contribution, we discuss why it is so difficult to include visuals and interactivities into a repository and what we can do to support them in a better way. We start by reviewing the current state of learning technology and educational repositories, and translating their major concepts to CG principles. Components of our own courses will then illustrate the possible impact of great interactivity in CG education. We give hints on how to share them in a worldwide repository, propose repository metadata for interactivity and adaptability, and introduce visual scripting as a metaphor to communicate learning objects’ data, structure, and behavior.

A primer of ophthalmic computer graphics

Computer graphics offers an unprecedented opportunity to probe new and old ideas in vision testing, without going to the expense of building dedicated equipment. However, the large variety of computer hardware is bewildering and only occasionally can commercial software tools be used. This mini review of the basic principles of computer graphics on personal computers is intended to help the newcomer to the field.

USE of computer graphics instruments in application-oriented training

Training in the field of computer graphics usage is important for all engineering courses. Both in design and in production, as well as in technical marketing, graphic representations constitute an important means of expression for the engineer. In connection with the training of engineers, three directions of training can be discerned: basic principles of computer graphics, computer-aided design (CAD) systems with their design and application and employment of CAD systems as a new aid for the designer. Methodical didactic training constitutes a precondition for profitable application of the methods of computer graphics.

Device independent and decentralized graphic systems

Increasing costs in software development and maintenance call for portability of user programs. Difficulties arise from the great diversity of input and display devices. Investigations of basic principles of computer graphics lead to the proposal of standards in Europe and USA in order to achieve device independence, a presupposition for program portability. Implementations of these standards should take advantage of pseudocode and decentralization. Providing peripheral devices with local memory and local processing power improves system performance. By use of pseudocode the definition of device independent interfaces between the host computer and peripheral units becomes feasible.
