Anisotropic characteristics of jointed rock mass: A case study at Shirengou iron ore mine in China

Rock mass is characterized by the existence of distributed joints whose properties and geometry strongly affect the mechanical behavior of jointed rock masses. A finite element model considering the anisotropic characteristics of fractured rock mass was proposed which could deal with a wide variety of joint distribution in rock mass and then applied in Shirengou iron ore mine in Tangshan, China. First, the scale effects and anisotropy were investigated by using multi-scale discrete fracture network models under uniaxial compression tests. Then, the principal direction of elasticity was found and used in the constitutive law of the equivalent continuum model. Finally, the deformation and failure behavior were studied and verified through site-specific microseismic data. It is found that the stress and damage zone are influenced by joint orientation. This proposed model can efficiently study the effects of rock joints on rock mass behavior and thus contribute to a more reasonable explanation on the dominant effect of the joint sets on deformation and failure of rock mass.

Determination of Poisson’s ratios in relation to fiber angle of a tropical wood species

This study examines the numerical variation of Poisson’s ratio with fiber direction for the tropical wood species Goupia glabra, whose products have significant applications in civil construction. Knowledge of mechanical properties is necessary when applying numerical methods to wood structure design, especially large-span structures, such as bridge structures with orthotropic plates. A theoretical elastic rectilinear orthotropic model with three principal directions of elasticity: longitudinal (L), radial (R), and tangential (T) has been adopted in development of this study. To determine Poisson’s ratios and their values, compression tests are performed on small prismatic test specimens. The numerical variation in two principal planes of elasticity, LR and LT, is verified. The results from both experimental tests and an orthotropic model approach are compared. The average differences between the theoretical and experimental values for the Poisson’s ratios are in the range of 2–15%, except for the angle 75° for the plane LT and for the angle 90° for the both planes. Considering wood’s heterogeneity and anisotropic behavior, the results of Poisson’s ratios indicate a satisfactory fit. In general, such results provide numerical information on this elastic parameter of a tropical wood species, extensively used in construction.

Large deflection analysis of orthotropic, elliptic membranes

Applications of membrane mechanisms are widely found in nano-devices and nano-sensor technologies nowadays. An alternative approach for large deflection analysis of the orthotropic, elliptic membranes - subject to gravitational, uniform pressures often found in nano-sensors - is described in this paper. The material properties of membranes are assumed to be orthogonally isotropic and linearly elastic, while the principal directions of elasticity are parallel to the coordinate axes. Formulating the potential energy functional of the orthotropic, elliptic membranes involves the strain energy that is attributed to inplane stress resultant and the potential energy due to applied pressures. In the solution method, Rayleigh-Ritz method can be used successfully to minimize the resulting total potential energy generated. The set of equilibrium equations was solved subsequently by Newton-Raphson. The unparalleled model formulation capable of analyzing the large deflections of both circular and elliptic membranes is verified by making numerical comparisons with existing results of circular membranes as well as finite element solutions. The results are found in excellent agreements at all cases. Then, the parametric investigations are given to delineate the impacts of the aspect ratios and orthotropic elasticity on large static tensions and deformations of the orthotropic, elliptic membranes.

Stability of Cylindrical Composite Shells under Torsion

The stability of fiber-reinforced cylindrical shells under torsion is analyzed in the case where the principal directions of elasticity in the layers do not coincide with the coordinate directions. The solution to the linearized equations of the technical theory of anisotropic shells is obtained in the form of trigonometric series. It is shown that for some reinforcement configurations the critical loads may depend on the direction of the torsional moment. It is also established that the minimum (in absolute value) eigenvalue does not always correspond to the critical load. This fact should be taken into account not only in the case of torsion but also in more complicated cases of loading

Stability of Laminated Shells Made of Materials with one Plane of Elastic Symmetry

The paper sets forth a technique, based on the Kirchhoff–Love theory of shells, for solving stability problems for thin-walled laminated shells of revolution made of an anisotropic material with one plane of elastic symmetry. The resolving system of differential equations is of the 16th order since the symmetric and asymmetric buckling modes are coupled. The results from a stability analysis of cylindrical shells made of carbon plastics and subjected to compression are analyzed against the angle of the principal directions of elasticity. The influence of boundary conditions is studied. The error due to neglecting the coupling of buckling modes is estimated

Stress state of freely supported multilayered elliptical plates of anisotropic materials

The problem of a stressed state in elliptic plates has been considered in general for a rigid contour fixation. It is much more difficult to obtain a solution for the freely supported plates, even for isotropic materials. In this paper we suggest an approach for defining the stressed state of thin elliptic plates with layered structure under the condition of a freely supported contour. The solution is obtained in a rectangular cartesian coordinate system. The displacements, which are the fundamental unknowns, are given in the form of polynomials with unknown coefficients defined by a system of algebraic equations. The resolving equations and three out of the four boundary conditions are satisfied precisely. One boundary condition, is satisfied by means of collocation method of separate points of the contour. Estimation of the accuracy of the suggested approach is carried out by comparing the obtained results with the known ones. The problem of deformation of a twolayered plate has been discussed, in which the principal direction of elasticity does not coincide with the coordinate directions.

Stress‐Strain Relation for Coated Fabrics

A constitutive relation is formulated for coated fabrics that exhibit both elastic and inelastic, but time-independent, responses. The nonlinear orthotropic response is represented by an elastic portion related to yarn stretch and coating shear, and an inelastic part related to crimp interchange. A method is proposed to compute the path-dependent inelastic strain and the elastic strain for any loading once material parameters are evaluated from uniaxial tests in the principal directions of elasticity.

Bending of a thin cantilevered orthotropic plate with a concentrated load at the free edge

The problem of a thin rectangular cantilevered plate of constant thickness with a concentrated load in the center of the free edge is considered. The plate is assumed to be orthotropic, the fixed edge coinciding with the principal direction of elasticity. An equation is obtained for the normal stresses at an arbitrary point on the plate. The theoretical results are compared with experiment.
