Construct validity of the Braden scale in acute- and long-term care settings in Austria: A structural equation modeling analysis

Objective: The Braden scale is frequently used to assess pressure ulcer risk in health care settings. Selected psychometric properties have been tested using various methods of classical test theory in international studies. However, limited information on construct validity is available. Aim was to determine if the Braden subscale items correlate with the construct pressure ulcer risk and whether the construct validity concerning the factor structure of the Braden scale is adequate in acute and long-term settings.Methods: A quantitative design with secondary analysis of data from one acute (n = 328) and eight long-term care facilities (n = 311) in Austria was used to test construct validity. Data analysis included principal axis factor analysis with Promax rotation and assessment of internal consistency, followed by structural equation modeling.Results: For the acute care setting, a structure equation model with two latent factors and for the long-term care setting with one latent factor was tested according to principal axis factoring results. The Braden subscale items correlated with the construct pressure ulcer risk. Almost all examined model fit indices were within recommended reference values. Thus, the construct validity of the Braden scale was adequate in both settings.Conclusions: The factor structure in the acute care setting did not match that in the investigated long-term care setting. Further research regarding the construct validity of the Braden scale is therefore necessary.

Determinants of Online Teaching and Learning Effectiveness for Statistical Concepts and Calculations Subjects During the COVID-19 Movement Control Order (MCO)

In today’s fast-paced ICT-driven world, understanding the factors influencing the effectiveness of online teaching and learning is paramount, especially during the Movement Control Order (MCO) when physical educational activities are restricted. Assessing the efficacy of undergraduate students under these circumstances can be particularly challenging, and the resulting conclusions may vary depending on the context. Consequently, this study is driven by three primary objectives. Firstly, this study seeks to employ factor analysis as a robust method for validating the selected online teaching and learning instruments. Secondly, it endeavors to categorize the survey instruments into distinct core variables using Principal Axis Factor analysis. Additionally, the study aims to harness multiple regression analysis to uncover the factors influencing the efficiency of online teaching and learning. To achieve these objectives, an online questionnaire was administered to 107 students enrolled in a university in Malaysia. The collected data were analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). The results of the multiple regression analysis revealed that lecturer roles and student attitudes have significant positive relationships with the success of online teaching and learning. In contrast, flexibility exhibited a significant but inverse association. Despite the global transition into the endemic phase of COVID-19, this study aspires to furnish valuable insights for lecturers, students, and university administrators regarding the ongoing practices of online teaching and learning. Ultimately, these insights can empower policymakers to formulate optimal strategies thereby benefiting all stakeholders involved. In conclusion, this study acknowledges its limitations and offers recommendations for further research.

Measuring the therapeutic bond in genetic counseling: Testing measurement error in the bond subscale of the Working Alliance Inventory.

The therapeutic relationship is a key component of successful genetic counseling. In psychotherapy, a strong therapeutic relationship can improve patient health outcomes and a poor relationship can worsen psychological functioning. Investigation of the therapeutic relationship in genetic counseling has shown evidence for a similar pattern. Reliable measurement of the therapeutic relationship is necessary for consistency across studies in the genetic counseling context. One measure that has been adapted for use in genetic counseling is the Working Alliance Inventory (WAI). However, there have been no studies of the factor structure or item-level method bias analyses for the genetic counseling-adapted version of the WAI. The goal of this study was to test the factor structure of the WAI observer version (WAI-O) bond subscale and assess method bias in a genetic counseling context. We hypothesized that differences in factor structures would exist for items that were positively (n = 9) versus negatively (n = 3) worded (reverse coded). Secondary data analysis was performed on two data sets that utilized the WAI-O in genetic counseling contexts. Data set 1 used simulated genetic counseling sessions that were judged by analog clients recruited through crowdsourcing platforms (N = 861). Data set 2 was conducted with genetic counseling clients, and sessions were evaluated by a research team (N = 120). Principal axis factor analysis with oblique oblimin rotation supported a two-factor solution for the WAI-O bond subscale across data sets. Items factored based on wording, with the positively worded items loading together and the negatively worded items loading on the second factor. Confirmatory factor analyses supported the removal of all negatively worded items from the instrument across data sets. Results suggest that the negatively worded items on the WAI-O may be capturing a construct inconsistent with the positively worded items and support rewording and/or excluding them from use for a more reliable measure of the therapeutic bond.

Reliability and factorial validity of the cross-media self-presence questionnaire (CM-SPQ)

The aim of this study was to develop the Cross-Media Self-Presence Questionnaire (CM-SPQ) for assessing self-presence in a broader range of digital contexts in comparison to the Self-Presence Questionnaire (SPQ) and to subsequently examine its reliability and factorial validity. The SPQ was introduced in 2009 (Ratan & Hasler, 2009) and later examined and developed by Ratan and co-authors (Rattan, 2010, 2011; Ratan & Hasler, 2010; Ratan & Sah, 2014; Ratan & Dawson, 2016). The CM-SPQ was crafted in this study, tailored to measure self-presence in diverse digital environments. Reliability and factorial validity of the CM-SPQ were assessed using data from Latvian active Internet users (n = 227), aged from 13 to 65 years old (M = 26.6, SD = 8.4). An exploratory principal-axis factor analysis with an oblique rotation was employed to evaluate its factorial validity. Three factors emerged from the analysis, interpreted as (1) Body-level self-presence (F1: the experience of physical presence and embodiment), (2) Identity-level self-presence (F2: the subjective experience of the self-emerging from an individual's digital interactions and the way they are perceived by others), and (3) Emotion-level self-presence (F3: the affective responses individuals have during digital interactions). The three distinct factors displayed high internal consistency, and the composite measures of each self-presence level were interrelated. The CM-SPQ, a novel instrument, aligns with psychometric standards, facilitating research on self-presence across various digital environments among individuals with digital identities.

Development and Validation of a Cultural and Linguistic Diversity Scale to Measure Pre-service EFL Teachers’ Self-Efficacy Beliefs

The study aims to develop and validate an affordable and generalizable survey design tool to measure pre-service EFL teachers’ self-efficacy beliefs about cultural and linguistic diversity. It is significant as there are relatively low number of studies aiming to measure such beliefs in today’s changing demographic conditions which are beyond its limits especially in some countries due to the massive flow of migrants. Most of these studies are qualitative which are not cost-effective and flexible. In this study, exploratory sequential mixed method was conducted. Initially, qualitative research design was employed. Findings were used to develop a valid and reliable survey design tool in a second quantitative phase in which data was gathered quantitatively to reduce the number of the variables to a few values representing self-efficacy beliefs and determine the latent components in the scale. Final version of the scale included 20 items across five factors after Exploratory Factor Analysis through principal axis factoring and Confirmatory Factor Analysis through maximum likelihood analysis. Findings supported that a set of 20 items in the final scale form was statistically valid and reliable in measuring pre-service EFL teachers’ self-efficacy beliefs about teaching in culturally and linguistically diverse student groups.

Clustering of neuropsychiatric symptoms across time in Alzheimer’s disease and Mild Cognitive Impairment

AbstractBackgroundNeuropsychiatric symptoms are behavioural manifestations highly prevalent along the Alzheimer’s disease (AD) continuum, including at the stage of Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). Although various projects have investigated the factors that underpin these symptoms, the most stable clustering pattern is still matter for debate; furthermore, to our knowledge, no study has investigated, longitudinally, how clusters might change due to development of AD pathology. Therefore, our objective is to investigate neuropsychiatric clusters over time, in a large sample of MCI and AD dementia patients.MethodsSamples were obtained from the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) database (adni.loni.usc.edu), using data from the Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI), from the baseline assessment visit, followed up yearly until data recorded at month 72. The samples included MCI and AD dementia patients (based on ADNI’s inclusion criteria), presenting with at least one neuropsychiatric symptom at the time‐point selected. Using SPSS (Version 28), we performed a series of exploratory principal components analyses (PCA), Varimax rotation, and principal axis factor analyses (FA), comparing Promax and Direct Oblimin rotations.ResultsThe best‐fitting structure was interpreted at each time‐point, based on: Eigenvalues>1, items’ loadings>0.4, scree plot patterns, minimum 40% of variance explained by the model, and independence of factors. Results from both PCA and FA indicated that a unique structure could not be identified, as factors were not stable over time; however, some symptoms tended to load on the same factors across most measurements (i.e. delusions with hallucinations; agitation with depression, anxiety and irritability; to a lesser extent elation with disinhibition; apathy with aberrant motor behaviour, sleep disturbances and appetite disorder).ConclusionsThe available evidence reveals that factors underlying the neuropsychiatric symptoms in a sample of AD and MCI patients are not consistent across the time‐points. However, some symptoms tend to co‐occur across time, with implications, for example, that an investigation into one of those symptoms should consider the presence of the other; furthermore, as clear theoretically driven factors are not distinctively identified at every time‐point, this illustrates the potential importance of sample selection (e.g., disease stage, and/or heterogeneity) on studies of neuropsychiatric symptoms.

Expectation of Engagement in Employment in 5 Years: Findings Among Participants With Spinal Cord Injury

The purpose of this study was to identify expectations of future engagement with employment among people with spinal cord injury (SCI), the underlying dimensions of engagement, and the relationship with demographic, SCI, and educational factors with engagement scales. Self-report data on the expectation of employment in 5 years were collected and analyzed from adult participants with traumatic SCI. Principal axis factor analysis with the varimax rotation was used to identify the underlying dimensions, and OLS was used to identify the relationship of demographic, SCI, and educational characteristics with the underlying dimensions. Most participants anticipated continuing to work about the same number of hours (61%), with 40% anticipating taking on more responsibility, 38% anticipating career advancement, and only 14% anticipating voluntary retirement. Factor analysis identified two underlying dimensions: job disengagement, measured by four items, and job engagement, measured by three items. Regression analysis indicated aging and years postinjury were highly related to both factors, with greater age and years postinjury related to disengagement. Completing a bachelor’s degree or higher was related to engagement. Non-Hispanic Blacks were more likely to have disengagement. Ambulatory participants were more likely to be engaged in employment. A relatively small number of items can easily measure individual expectations, particularly as they age with SCI.

The Parent PrU: A measure to assess personal utility of pediatric genomic results

PurposeWe aimed to adapt and validate an existing patient-reported outcome measure, the personal-utility (PrU) scale, for use in the pediatric genomic context. MethodsWe adapted the adult version of the PrU and obtained feedback from 6 parents whose child had undergone sequencing. The resulting measure, the Parent PrU, was administered to parents of children in 4 pediatric cohorts of the Clinical Sequencing Evidence-Generating Research consortium after they received their children’s genomic results. We investigated the measure’s structural validity and internal consistency. ResultsWe conducted a principal-axis factor analysis with oblimin rotation on data from 755 participants to determine structural validity. These analyses yielded a 3-factor solution, accounting for 76% of the variance in the 16 items. We used Cronbach’s α to assess the internal consistency of each factor: (1) child benefits (α = .95), (2) affective parent benefits (α = .90), and (3) parent control (α = .94). ConclusionOur evidence suggests that the Parent PrU scale has potential as a measure for assessing parent-reported personal utility of their children’s genomic results. Additional research is needed to further validate the Parent PrU scale, including by comparing its findings with utility assessments reported by clinicians and children themselves.

Sustainability‐oriented innovation in retailing

AbstractSustainability‐oriented innovation in services has recently been raising interest among academics and professionals. The present research has a dual objective. The first is to develop a scale that captures the notion of sustainability‐oriented innovation in retailing (SOI‐r) from the consumer's perspective. A sequential process is carried out to purge and retain 17 items which synergistically measure SOI‐r. We use quantitative research, adopting an exploratory‐descriptive approach on a total sample of 510 customers of commercial food establishments. The principal axis factor analysis shows six factors: product innovation, marketing innovation, relational innovation, economic sustainability, social sustainability, and environmental sustainability. The second objective is to develop an index using importance‐performance map analysis, which allows analysis of the level of development of the six dimensions identified in SOI‐r and areas for their improvement. The results are compared across food retail formats (hypermarkets, supermarkets, and discount stores) and recommendations are made at a strategic level.

Caloric Restriction Intervention Alters Specific Circulating Biomarkers of the Senescence-Associated Secretome in Middle-Aged and Older Adults With Obesity and Prediabetes in an 18-Week Randomized Controlled Trial.

Cellular senescence is a biological aging process that is exacerbated by obesity and leads to inflammation and age- and obesogenic-driven chronic diseases including type 2 diabetes. Caloric restriction (CR) may improve metabolic function in part by reducing cellular senescence and the pro-inflammatory senescence-associated phenotype (SASP). We conducted an ancillary investigation of an 18-week randomized controlled trial (RCT) of CR (n = 31) or Control (n = 27) in 58 middle-aged/older adults (57.6 ± 5.8 years; 75% Women) with obesity and prediabetes. We measured mRNA expression of select senescence and apoptosis genes in blood CD3 + T cells (qRT-PCR) and a panel of 25 plasma SASP proteins (Luminex/multiplex; ELISA). Participants randomized to CR lost -10.8 ± 0.9 kg (-11.3% ± 5.4%) over 18 weeks compared with +0.5 ± 0.9 kg (+0.03% ± 3.5%) in Control group. T-cell expression of senescence biomarkers, p16INK4a and p21CIP1/WAF1, and apoptosis markers, BCL2L1 and BAK1, was not different between CR and Control groups in age, race, and sex-adjusted mixed models (p > .05, all). Iterative principal axis factor analysis was used to develop composite SASP Factors, and the Factors comprising TNFRI, TNFRII, uPAR, MMP1, GDF15, OPN, Fas, and MPO were significantly altered with CR intervention (age, sex, race-adjusted mixed model time × treatment F = 4.17, p ≤ .05) and associated with the degree of weight loss (R2 = 0.12, p ≤ .05). Our study provides evidence from an RCT that specific circulating biomarkers of senescent cell burden are changed by CR in middle-aged and older adults with obesity and prediabetes. Future studies compare tissue and circulating levels of p16INK4a and pro-inflammatory SASP biomarkers in other populations, and interventions.

Development of a body dysmorphic disorder screener for DSM-5 (BDDS-5)

Early identification of individuals with Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is essential to direct them to appropriate care and to reduce the chance of developing or maintaining comorbid psychiatric disorders (like an eating disorder (ED)). The present study aimed to develop a simple screener, the Body Dysmorphic Disorder Screener for DSM-5 (BDDS-5), to overcome existing screeners' limitations and test its psychometric properties.The BDDS-5 consists of 12 statements with dichotomous answer options. Specific attention is paid to the readability of the screener for those with lower reading skills. Additional eating disorder screening questions (S section) were added to investigate whether these questions are necessary for detecting potential BDD cases. Finally, the factor structure, internal consistency, and validity of the BDDS-5 were examined within populations with a high risk of screening positive for BDD or ED. Principal axis factor analysis showed that two factors accounted for 63.5% of the variance. The factor analysis was based on polychoric correlation. Based on the BDDS-5, 33 persons (14% of N = 235) were screened as likely BDD cases. Nineteen persons were excluded as potential BDD cases based on the eating disorder related question (question D). Based on the S-section, this turned out to be largely correct for the majority, however, in 8% (n = 4) of the cases BDD was probably missed. The convergent validity appeared to be high (r > 0.80) with three other BDD measures.The BDDS-5 is a valid and widely applicable screener for BDD that may help in the early detection of BDD. The BDDS-5 uses simple wording and is thus suitable for people 8 years and older.

Religious and Spiritual assistance of people in palliative care. Practical Assessment

"The primary purpose of this study is to understand if/how patients of hospice healthcare require ‘Spiritual’ or/and ‘Religious’ assistance and if its involvement in palliative care helps greatly. We have built a correlative of two scales and administrated them on the same sample, along with complete demographics questions to a group of people under palliative care and several people directly connected with patients, relatives- families. This methodological study is designed to assess the reliability and validity of two scales simultaneously for the same terminally ill patients (TIP): Paloutzian and Ellison’s (1982) Spiritual Well-being Scale. The scale was administered to 49 individuals, of which 45 are patients and 4 family members caring for a terminally ill relative. Background: Coping is a multifactorial and individual process related to responding to stressful situations, such as being a caregiver of a person with health conditions or terminal illness [such as in hospice]. Spiritual [S] / religious [R] coping is an essential internal resource used by individuals enduring stressful situations or, in this particular case, confronting imminent death. Instruments: The 14-item Brief RCOPE is widely used to assess religious coping. The other instrument we have used for S/R assessment is the Spiritual Well-Being (SWB) Scale, a general measure of the subjective quality of life. Neither one is available in the Romanian version Ciocan Tudor-Cosmin (2023) developed following Romanian culture. He worked with Professor Ray Paloutzian - author of the latter scale - to translate and validate the use of the translated scales. Objective: To investigate the S/RWB among palliative care patients in Romania and to identify the correlates of Spiritual and Religious Well-Being. Secondary: To translate, adapt and validate both the 14-item Brief RCOPE and SWBS in Romanian for caregivers of palliative patients facing death. Method: The methodological guideline provided by Ray Paloutzian and Craig W. Ellison was used to examine the psychometric properties of SWBS, while the manual provided by Kenneth Pargament on his website helped us accommodate the Brief RCOPE to Romanian culture and understanding. Results: The linguistic and conceptual equivalence of the scales was determined. The internal consistency was acceptable (Cronbach’s a = 0.891 for SWBS and a = 0.798 for RCOPE). The Principal Axis Factor (PAF) analysis with varimax rotation identified two factors comprising 13 items, and one item was excluded from the scale (14/RCOPE). The faith subscale (SWBS) showed similar distributions. Christians engaged in religious activities reported higher SWB in the meaning and peace subscale than patients without religious attendance. In the multivariate analysis, religious Frequency (P < 0.001), and individual spiritual activities (P < 0.003) were significantly related to a greater SWB. Conclusion: The Romanian versions of the SWBS and Brief RCOPE are reliable and valid measures for assessing both the spiritual and religious coping of patients in hospice, their families, and their caregivers. Although faith practices may be beneficial to improve spiritual well-being among Orthodox Christians (the majority in Romania), further research is needed to determine what individual spiritual activities can be supported by Orthodox Christians positively engaged – since they are very skeptical about practices other than religious ones, introduced by the traditional Church."

Adaptation and validation of the Spanish version of the thyroid-cancer-specific Thyca-QoL scale: A cross-sectional study

Introduction. Thyca-QoL is a specific instrument to assess QoL in thyroid cancer patients, but it is not validated in Spanish language. The aim was to assess the psychometric properties of the Thyca-QoL. Methods. This is a prospective cross-sectional study. The Thyca-QoL was translated and adapted to Spanish language. A psychometric validation using an exploratory principal axis factor analysis and confirmatory analysis, concurrent validation compared with EORTC QLQ-C30 and a test-retest reliability assessment was done. Results. A total of 296 patients were included. Exploratory factor analysis showed a seven-factor solution with good diagnostic tests results. Cronbach´s alpha for the global scale was 0.86. The comparison between the ThycaQoL and the EORTC QLQ-C30 demonstrated a high correlation (rho= 0.75) and coefficient for test-retest was 0.87. Discussion. The validation process followed all the methodological steps necessary to guarantee the performance of the instrument. The measurements of the internal validity, reliability and reproducibility reached similar results as the original validation. The factor analysis showed a solution with seven factors that resembles the original results. Reproducibility was high for voice, sympathetic, sex, and chilliness domains and moderate for the others and the instrument had the ability to discriminate between clinical conditions. Conclusion. Thyca-QoL is a reliable and objective instrument to be used in clinical practice and for research objectives in Spanish speaking patients.

Coding Skills in the Automation of Accounting Processes

Abstract Research background The evolution of technologies nowadays gives a higher impact on all sectors, including accounting. With rapidly growing volumes of data available, coding can be a valuable skillset for accountants to derive insight and value for organizations from accounting data. Purpose The objective of this paper is to identify the benefits of coding skills among accounting professionals, especially in the area of the automation of processes. In addition, the paper discusses some barriers to developing coding abilities. Research methodology The research study analyzed a sample of 160 respondents from around the world. The study used a questionnaire. A principal axis factor analysis with the Promax rotation was conducted to assess the underlying structure for the points of the questionnaire. Results The results showed that accountants should possess at least some basic skills in coding. The top benefit of coding skills by accountants, as perceived by the respondents, was the possibility to automate repetitive tasks, data reporting, and visualization. The top barrier to coding skills by accountants, as perceived by the respondents, was a lack of time and knowledge of what software skills to acquire and how. Novelty This research contributes to the literature by exploring the benefits of and barriers to coding in the accounting field. The findings can be useful for financial professionals and adepts to understand the benefits of coding skills in accounting.

Cross-cultural Adaptation of Oral and Maxillofacial Frailty Assessment Tools for Geriatric Population of Kerala.

The aim of this study is to translate the oral and maxillofacial frailty index (OMFI) into Malayalam, culturally adapt it, and test its reliability and validity in the Kerala geriatric population. OMFI was translated, culturally adapted, and validated in Malayalam using a methodological and cross-sectional study design. The Malayalam version of OMFI underwent full linguistic validation and was tested on 200 patients at Amritakripa Hospital in Kalpetta. Principal component analysis with varimax rotation was used for exploratory factor analysis, and Cronbach's alpha was used to assess reliability. Two-hundred patients were recruited in this study. Participants ranged in age from 60 to 83 years; mean age was 68 years (SD: 15.21). In total 55.5% were male participants, and 30.5% were belonging to upper middle class as per the Kuppuswami scale. Only 12% of the participants were living alone. Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin was found to be 0.583, and Bartlett's test of sphericity was significant with a Chi-square test value of 1003.469. A principal axis factor analysis conducted on 20 items with orthogonal rotation (varimax). OMFI Malayalam version (5 items) had a good internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.751). Item-total correlations were reviewed for the items of OMFI. The OMFI Malayalam version demonstrated acceptable validity and reliability and can be used to screen the oral frailty of the geriatric population in Kerala. As Kerala is having highest geriatric population in India, we need to assess the oral frailty burden of Kerala. This study provided the first measure to assess the oral frailty in elderly in Kerala.

Linking household access to food and social capital typologies in Phalombe District, Malawi

Food security remains a major sustainability challenge in many parts of Sub-Saharan Africa. Food security has numerous determinants that are complex and interlinked, with one of them being social capital. Social capital reflects an individual’s, household’s, or community’s social networks, social interactions, and social support systems that can be mobilized in times of need to maintain, among others, livelihoods or food security. This study aims to further understand how typologies of social capital are associated with household food security in Southern Malawi, with a focus on access to food. We unpack social capital into three typologies, namely bonding, bridging, and linking social capital, and establish which one is most strongly associated with household access to food, and whether this varies by the gender of the household head. To achieve this, we analyze secondary data from 382 households collected through the Malawian Fourth Integrated Household Survey (IHS4), using principal axis factor analysis and logistic regression analysis. Our findings demonstrate that bonding and bridging social capital are associated with better household access to food, while linking social capital was associated with lower household access to food. Bonding social capital was most strongly associated for female-headed households and linking social capital for male-headed households, highlighting that there are differences between such households. This work confirms observations from other related studies in Sub-Saharan Africa exploring the interface of social capital and food security. It also highlights the importance of both acknowledging the gender of the household head and of unpacking social capital into its typologies when considering food security.

As simple as possible, but not simpler: Revisiting the International Trauma Questionnaire (ITQ) complex PTSD items omitted in the shortened version

BackgroundThe risks of oversimplification of the symptomatology of Complex PTSD (CPTSD) have been highlighted in the literature. ObjectiveTo re-examine 10 items representing disturbances in self-organization (DSO) that were deleted from the original 28-item version of the International Trauma Questionnaire (ITQ) when creating the current 12-item version. Participants and settingAn online convenience sample of 1235 MTurk users. MethodsOnline survey comprising the fuller 28-item previous version of the ITQ, Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) questionnaire, and PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5). ResultsFirst, averaged endorsement of the 10 omitted items was lower than the 6 retained DSO items (d’ = 0.34). Second, the 10 omitted DSO items accounted for incremental variance over and correlated equivalently to the 6 retained items with the PCL-5. Third, only the 10 omitted DSO items (r-part = 0.12) while not the 6 retained DSO items (r-part = −0.01) independently predicted ACE scores and, eight of these ten omitted DSO items differentiated higher ACE scores even among the subset of 266 participants who endorsed all 6 of the retained DSO items, most with medium effect sizes. Fourth, exploratory principal axis factor analysis differentiated two latent variables within the fuller set of 16 DSO symptoms, with the strongest indicators of the second factor, namely uncontrollable anger, recklessness, derealization, and depersonalization, being unmeasured within the 6 retained DSO items. Moreover, scores on both factors independently predicted both PCL-5 and ACE scores. ConclusionsThere are conceptual and pragmatic advantages to revisiting a more content-valid and comprehensive conceptualization of CPTSD and DSO, partially as may be measured by the recently deleted items from the original and fuller length ITQ.

Translation and Validation of the Malay Perceived Stress Scale Modified for COVID-19.

Stress amidst the COVID-19 pandemic is becoming more prevalent. This paper aimed to describe the validation process of the Malay Perceived Stress Scale modified for COVID-19 (PSS-10-C) amongst Malaysian youths. The cross-sectional validation study design was employed in this study. In Phase I, the scale was translated into Malay by using the forward-backward method. In Phase 2, principal axis factoring and confirmatory factor analysis were conducted in Study 1 (n = 267) and Study 2 (n = 324), respectively. A two-factor solution, comprising 'distress' and 'coping' domains was derived (cumulative variance = 65.2%) in Phase 2. Concurrent validity evaluated via the Beck Hopelessness Scale revealed a moderate positive correlation (0.528). In Study 2 (n = 324), the confirmatory factor analysis showed that the two-factor model achieved acceptable model fit indices, including χ2/df ratio = 2.57; root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA) = 0.07; 95% CI = 0.05, 0.09; Tucker-Lewis Index (TLI) = 0.95 and Normed Fit Index (NFI) = 0.94. The Cronbach's alpha scale score was 0.855 for the study samples. The Malay PSS-10-C is a valid and reliable scale to be used amongst Malaysian youths.

From hedonism to frugality: consumption desires in different age groups across 20 years

This article examines different kinds of consumption desires of Finnish consumers by asking how they would change their consumption habits if they had more money at their disposal. As previous research on consumption desires has been mainly based on the essence of desires and the cycle of fulfilling hedonistic desires and creating new ones, this study analyses the desires in the context of the ages of both consumers and consumer society. The focus was differences in consumption desires between age groups and changes across 20 years. The data were derived from three repeated surveys collected in 1999, 2009 and 2019 in Finland (N = 5,459), which were analysed with principal-axis factor analysis and ANCOVA. The factor analysis extracted three types of consumption desires: hedonistic, charitable-cultural and materialistic. Saving-oriented desires were analysed as a single item. Hedonistic consumption desires were the most typical for the youngest age group (18–25), and materialistic desires were the highest for young adults aged 26–35 across all three years of measurement. Older people had the most charitably and culturally oriented desires in 1999, but older age groups’ orientation to saving and charitable giving and culture decreased across 20 years. Hedonistic consumption desires generally decreased over 20 years, particularly in young age groups. Conversely, young people’s desire to save increased significantly, whereas the oldest age groups saved less. The research shows that both changes in consumer values and economic circumstances are manifested in people’s consumption desires.

DEVELOPMENT OF A LEADERSHIP MINDSET SCALE

The purpose of the study was to construct a Leadership Mindset Scale (LMS) and to assess its reliability and construct validity. Participants were 100 employees in a variety of leadership and non-leadership positions at various organizations in three states. An item and factor analysis on the 13 LMS items led to a scale with 11 items (Cronbach α = .80). A Principal Axis Factor analysis with Promax rotation suggested three factors: Leadership Mindset Teachability (LMS-T), a belief in leadership teachability; Leadership Mindset Improvability (LMS-I), a belief in leadership improvability over time; and Leadership Mindset Predictability (LMS-P), a belief that leadership cannot be predicted at an early age. Convergent validity of LMS-Total and Teachability was evidenced by significant correlations with the implicit theories of intelligence and anxiety scales, and developmental leadership and transactional leadership scales. Divergent validity was evidenced by a non-significant correlation with social desirability. The results suggest that the LMS measures a construct different from those of other leadership scales used in the study. The LMS can be helpful in leadership training programs to promote a growth mindset about the trainability of leadership skills.
