Gravitational waves in a cyclic Universe: resilience through cycles and vacuum state

We present a generalised calculation for the spectrum of primordial tensor perturbations in a cyclic Universe, making no assumptions about the vacuum state of the theory and accounting for the contribution of tensor modes produced in the dark energy phase of the previous cycle. We show that these modes have minimal impact on the spectrum observed in the current cycle, except for corrections on scales as large as the comoving Hubble radius today. These corrections are due to sub-horizon modes produced towards the end of the dark energy phase, persisting into the ekpyrotic phase of the next cycle as additional quanta. In relation to the vacuum state, we argue that non-Bunch-Davies quanta can easily overwhelm the energy density driving the dark energy phase, potentially compromising the model. Therefore, avoiding backreaction effects sets restrictive constraints on deviations away from the Bunch-Davies vacuum during this phase, limiting the overall freedom to consider alternative vacua in the cyclic Universe.

Minimal decoherence from inflation

We compute the rate with which super-Hubble cosmological fluctuations are decohered during inflation, by their gravitational interactions with unobserved shorter-wavelength scalar and tensor modes. We do so using Open Effective Field Theory methods, that remain under control at the late times of observational interest, contrary to perturbative calculations. Our result is minimal in the sense that it only incorporates the self-interactions predicted by General Relativity in single-clock models (additional interaction channels should only speed up decoherence). We find that decoherence is both suppressed by the first slow-roll parameter and by the energy density during inflation in Planckian units, but that it is enhanced by the volume comprised within the scale of interest, in Hubble units. This implies that, for the scales probed in the Cosmic Microwave Background, decoherence is effective as soon as inflation proceeds above ∼ 5 × 109 GeV. Alternatively, if inflation proceeds at GUT scale decoherence is incomplete only for the scales crossing out the Hubble radius in the last ∼ 13 e-folds of inflation. We also compute how short-wavelength scalar modes decohere primordial tensor perturbations, finding a faster rate unsuppressed by slow-roll parameters. Identifying the parametric dependence of decoherence, and the rate at which it proceeds, helps suggest ways to look for quantum effects.

On the decoherence of primordial gravitons

It is well-known that the primordial scalar curvature and tensor perturbations, ζ and γij, are conserved on super-horizon scales in minimal inflation models. However, their wave functional has a rapidly oscillating phase which is slow-roll unsuppressed, as can be seen either from boundary (total-derivative) terms of cosmological perturbations, or the WKB approximation of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation. Such an oscillatory phase involves gravitational non-linearity between scalar and tensor perturbations. By tracing out unobserved modes, the oscillatory phase causes faster decoherence of primordial gravitons compared to those by bulk interactions. Our results put a stronger lower bound of decoherence effect to the recent proposals probing squeezed primordial gravitons.

Inflationary dynamics and swampland criteria for modified Gauss-Bonnet gravity compatible with GW170817

In this article we present an alternative formalism for the inflationary phenomenology of rescaled Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet models which are in agreement with the GW170817 event. By constraining the propagation velocity of primordial tensor perturbations, an approximate form for the time derivative of the scalar field coupled to the Gauss-Bonnet density is extracted. In turn, the overall degrees of freedom decrease and similar to the case of the canonical scalar field, only one scalar function needs to be designated, while the other is extracted from the continuity equation of the scalar field. We showcase explicitly that the slow-roll indices can be written in a closed form as functions of three dimensionless parameters, namely $x=\frac{1}{2\alpha}\bigg(\frac{\kappa\xi'}{\xi''}\bigg)^2$, $\beta=8H^2\xi''$ and $\gamma=\frac{\xi'\xi'''}{\xi''^2}$ and in turn, we prove that the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet model can in fact produce a blue-tilted tensor spectral index if the condition $\beta\geq1$ is satisfied, which is possible only for Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet models with $\xi''(\phi_k)>0$. Afterwards, a brief comment on the running of the spectral indices is made where it is shown that $a_{\mathcal{S}}(k_*)$ and $a_{\mathcal{T}}(k_*)$ in the constrained case are approximately of the order $\mathcal{O}(10^{-3})$, if not smaller. Last but not least, we examine the conditions under which the Swampland criteria are satisfied. We connect the tracking condition related to scalar field theories with the present models, and we highlight the important feature of the models we propose that the tracking condition can be satisfied only if the Swampland criteria are simultaneously satisfied, however the cases with $\xi\sim1/V$ and $\xi\sim V$ are excluded, as they cannot describe the inflationary era properly.

Gravitational waves from primordial scalar and tensor perturbations

We investigate the second order gravitational waves induced by the primordial scalar and tensor perturbations during radiation-dominated era. The explicit expressions of the power spectra of the second order GWs are presented. We calculate the energy density spectra of the second order GWs for a monochromatic primordial power spectra. For large $k$ $\left( k>k_* \right)$, the effects of the primordial tensor perturbation with tensor-to-scalar ratio $r=A_{h}/A_{\zeta}=0.2$ lead to an around $50\% $ increase of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for LISA observations.

Gravitational wave probes of massive gauge bosons at the cosmological collider

We extend the reach of the “cosmological collider” for massive gauge boson production during inflation from the CMB scales to the interferometer scales. Considering a Chern-Simons coupling between the gauge bosons and the pseudoscalar inflaton, one of the transverse gauge modes is efficiently produced and its inverse decay leaves an imprint in the primordial scalar and tensor perturbations. We study the correlation functions of these perturbations and derive the updated constraints on the parameter space from CMB observables. We then extrapolate the tensor power spectrum to smaller scales consistently taking into account the impact of the gauge field on inflationary dynamics. Our results show that the presence of massive gauge fields during inflation can be detected from characteristic gravitational wave signals encompassing the whole range of current and planned interferometers.

Constant-roll inflation in brane induced gravity cosmology

In this article we study a constant-roll inflationary model in the context of the DGP brane-world cosmology caused by a quintessence scalar field. We determine an analytical solution for the Friedman equation coupled to the equation of motion of the scaler field. The evolution of the primordial scalar and tensor perturbations is also studied. To check the viability of the model we use numerical approaches and plot some figures. Our results for the scalar spectral index and the tensor to scaler ratio show good consistency with observations for given values of model parameters.

Warm constant-roll inflation in brane-world cosmology

In this paper, we study a constant-roll inflationary model in the context of brane-world cosmology caused by a quintessence scalar field for warm inflation with a constant dissipative parameter [Formula: see text]. We determine the analytical solution for the Friedmann equation coupled to the equation of motion of the scalar field. The evolution of the primordial scalar and tensor perturbations is also studied using the modified Langevin equation. To check the viability of the model, we use numerical approaches and plot some figures. Our results for the scalar spectral index and the tensor-to-scalar ratio show good consistency with observations.

Generalized Horndeski-like Einstein Gauss-Bonnet inflation with massless primordial gravitons

In this work we shall introduce a theoretical framework comprised by a non-minimal coupled canonical scalar field, a non-minimal coupling to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant and a non-minimal kinetic coupling. This theoretical framework is basically a non-minimally coupled Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory with extra corrections of the form of a non-minimal kinetic coupling. In order to comply with the GW170817 event, we shall impose a constraint on the propagation speed of the primordial tensor perturbations that it is equal to that of light's in vacuum, and this constraint basically specifies the way that the scalar potential and the non-minimal couplings of the theory can be chosen. The whole theoretical framework, which belongs to the larger class of Horndeski theories, cannot yield viable results, due to the fact that the primordial gravitational wave speed is not equal to that of light's. Thus we study this theory by also imposing the constraint of having gravity wave speed equal to the light speed. We directly examine the inflationary phenomenology of our theoretical framework and by assuming the slow-roll conditions, we derived the equations of motion in such a way so that analytical results may be extracted. By using several well motivated models we demonstrate the framework leads to a viable phenomenology.

Gravitational Wave Direct Detection does not Constrain the Tensor Spectral Index at CMB Scales

I discuss constraints on the power spectrum of primordial tensor perturbations from a combination of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) measurements and the gravitational wave direct detection experiments LIGO/Virgo and DECIGO. There are two main points: (1) Inflation predicts an approximately power-law form for the primordial tensor spectrum, but makes no prediction for its amplitude. Given that neither Planck nor LIGO/Virgo has actually detected primordial tensor modes, it is trivially true that no model-independent constraint on the slope of the tensor power spectrum is possible with current data. (2) CMB and LIGO/Virgo scales differ by more than 19 orders of magnitude, and 16 for DECIGO. I show that a power-law extrapolation from CMB to direct detection frequencies overestimates the amplitude of primordial tensor modes by as much as two orders of magnitude relative to an ensemble of realistic single-field inflation models. Moreover, the primordial tensor amplitude at direct detection scales is mostly uncorrelated with the tensor spectral index at CMB scales, and any constraint is strongly dependent on the specific form of the inflationary potential.

Higher-curvature corrections and tensor modes

Higher-curvature corrections to the effective gravitational action may leave signatures in the spectrum of primordial tensor perturbations if the inflationary energy scale is sufficiently high. In this paper we further investigate the effects of a coupling of the Inflaton field to higher-curvature tensors in models with a minimal breaking of conformal symmetry. We show that an observable violation of the tensor consistency relation from higher-curvature tensors implies also a relatively large running of the tensor tilt, enhanced even by some order of magnitude with respect to the standard slow roll case. This may leave signatures in the tensor two-point function that we could test to recognize higher-curvature effects, above all if they are translated into a blue tilted spectrum visible by future Gravitational Wave experiments. Exploiting current cosmic microwave background and gravitational wave data we also derive constraints on the inflationary parameters, inferring that large higher-curvature corrections seem to be disfavored.

A tip for landscape riders: multi-field inflation can fulfill the swampland distance conjecture

We study how both the swampland distance conjecture and the Lyth bound affect the parameter space of multi-field models of inflation. A generic feature of multi-field inflation is that the geodesic distance [Δϕ]G separating any two points laying along the inflationary trajectory differs from the non-geodesic distance [Δϕ]NG traversed by the inflaton between those points. These distances must respect a relation of the form [Δϕ]G = f([Δϕ]NG) ⩽ [Δϕ]NG, where f is a function determined by the specific multi-field model under scrutiny. We show that this relation leads to important constraints on the parameter space characterizing the multi-field dynamics. Indeed, the swampland distance conjecture implies an upper bound on [Δϕ]G set by the details of the ultraviolet completion of inflation, whereas the Lyth bound implies a lower bound on [Δϕ]NG determined by the value of the tensor-to-scalar ratio. If future observations confirm the existence of primordial tensor perturbations, these two bounds combined lead to tight constraints on the possible values of the entropy mass of the isocurvature fields orthogonal to the inflationary trajectory and the rate of turn of the inflationary trajectory in multi-field space. We analyze the emerging constraints in detail for the particular case of two-field inflation in hyperbolic field spaces.

Squeezed tensor non-Gaussianity in non-attractor inflation

We investigate primordial tensor non-Gaussianity in single field inflation, during a phase of non-attractor evolution when the spectrum of primordial tensor modes can be enhanced to a level detectable at interferometer scales. Making use of a tensor duality we introduced in [1], we analytically compute the full bispectrum of primordial tensor fluctuations during the non-attractor era. During this epoch the shape of the tensor bispectrum is enhanced in the squeezed limit, its amplitude can be amplified with respect to slow-roll models, and tensor non-Gaussianity can exhibit a scale dependence distinctive of our set-up. We prove that our results do not depend on the frame used for the calculations. Squeezed tensor non-Gaussianity induces a characteristic quadrupolar anisotropy on the power spectrum of the stochastic background of primordial tensor perturbations. As a step to make contact with gravitational wave experiments, we discuss the response function of a ground based Michelson interferometer to a gravitational wave background with such a feature.

On CMB B-modes and the onset of inflation

The temperature perturbations of the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB) appear systematically suppressed, at large angular scales, with respect to the prediction of the ΛCDM concordance model. This behavior might be a glimpse of the inflaton deceleration from fast-roll at the start of inflation. If this were true, the spectrum of primordial tensor perturbations should be distorted in a corresponding way, with a suppression of large angular scale B-mode polarization that might be within reach for future probes like LiteBIRD . We investigate this scenario by a semi-analytic method based on a truncation of the B-mode polarization spectrum, which in our opinion has the virtue of highlighting the underlying Physics. We present some mild evidence that, with sufficient knowledge of the reionization process, the suppression of large-scale B-modes might be within reach.

Inflation model selection revisited

We update the constraints on the power spectra of primordial curvature perturbation and tensor perturbation including Planck data 2015 (P15) and recently released BICEP2/Keck data (BK15), Baryon Acoustic Oscillation data and the Type Ia supernovae data. We find that the upper limits of tensor-to-scalar ratio are $0.061$, $0.064$ and $0.072$ at $95\%$ confidence level (CL) in the $\Lambda$CDM+$r$, $\Lambda$CDM+$r$+$\alpha_s$ and $\Lambda$CDM+$r$+$\alpha_s$+$\beta_s$ models respectively, where $\alpha_s$ and $\beta_s$ are the running of scalar spectral index and running of running. The inflation model with a concave potential is favored at more than $95\%$ CL. In addition, parametrizing the slow-roll parameter $\epsilon\sim 1/N^p$, where $N$ is the e-folding number before the end of inflation and taken in the range of $[50,60]$ and $[14,75]$ respectively, we conclude that the inflation model with a monomial potential $V(\phi)\sim \phi^n$ is disfavored at more than $95\%$ CL, and both the Starobinsky inflation model and brane inflation model are still consistent with the data.

Future CMB constraints on cosmic birefringence and implications for fundamental physics

The primary scientific target of the ground- and space-based cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization experiments currently being built and proposed is the detection of primordial tensor perturbations. As a byproduct, these instruments will significantly improve constraints on cosmic birefringence, or the rotation of the CMB polarization plane. If convincingly detected, cosmic birefringence would be a dramatic manifestation of physics beyond the standard models of particle physics and cosmology. We forecast the bounds on the cosmic polarization rotation (CPR) from the upcoming ground-based Simons Observatory (SO) and the space-based LiteBIRD experiments, as well as a ``fourth-generation'' ground-based CMB experiment like CMB-S4 and the midcost space mission PICO. We examine the detectability of both a stochastic anisotropic rotation field, as well as an isotropic rotation by a constant angle. CPR induces new correlations of CMB observables, including spectra of parity-odd type in the case of isotropic CPR, and mode-coupling correlations in the anisotropic rotation case. We find that LiteBIRD and SO will reduce the $1\ensuremath{\sigma}$ bound on the isotropic CPR from the current value of 30 arcmin to 1.5 and 0.6 arcmin, respectively, while a CMB-S4-like experiment and PICO will reduce it to $\ensuremath{\sim}0.1\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{arcmin}$. The bounds on the amplitude of a scale-invariant CPR spectrum will be reduced by 1, 2, and 3 orders of magnitude by LiteBIRD, SO, and CMB-S4-like/PICO, respectively. We discuss potential implications for fundamental physics by interpreting the forecasted bounds on CPR in terms of the corresponding constraints on pseudoscalar fields coupled to electromagnetism, primordial magnetic fields (PMF), and violations of Lorentz invariance. We find that CMB-S4-like and PICO can reduce the $1\ensuremath{\sigma}$ bound on the amplitude of the scale-invariant PMF from 1 to 0.1 nG, while also probing the magnetic field of the Milky Way. The upcoming experiments will also tighten bounds on the axion-photon coupling, with SO improving the bound from ${f}_{a}\ensuremath{\gtrsim}50{H}_{I}$ at present, where ${H}_{I}$ is the energy scale of inflation, to ${f}_{a}\ensuremath{\gtrsim}500{H}_{I}$, and CMB-S4-like and PICO raising it to ${f}_{a}\ensuremath{\gtrsim}\mathrm{few}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{3}{H}_{I}$, placing stringent constraints on the string theory axions.

Signatures of primordial gravitational waves in matter power spectrum

We simulate the evolution of a dust universe from z=1089 to z=0 by numerically integrating the Einstein’s equation for a spatially flat Friedmann–Lemaire–Robertson–Walker (FLRW) background spacetime with scalar perturbations which are derived from the matter power spectrum produced with the Code for Anisotropies in the Microwave Background (CAMB). To investigate the effects of primordial gravitational waves (GWs) on the inhomogeneity of the universe, we add an additional decaying, divergenceless and traceless primordial tensor perturbation with its initial amplitude being 3times 10^{-4} to the above metric. We find that this primordial tensor perturbation suppresses the matter power spectrum by about 0.01% at z=0 for modes with wave number similar to its. This suppression may be a possible probe of a GWs background in the future.

Primordial tensor perturbation in double inflationary scenario with a break

We study the primordial tensor perturbation produced from the double inflationary scenario with an intermediate break stage. Because of the transitions, the power spectrum deviates from the vacuum one and there will appear oscillatory behavior. In the case of a scalar-type curvature perturbation, it is known that the amplitude of these oscillations may be enhanced to result in the power spectrum larger than the one for the vacuum case. One might expect the similar enhancement for the tensor perturbation as well. Unfortunately, it is found that when the equation of state (EOS) parameter w=p/ρ of the break stage is a constant with w>−1/3, the amplitude of oscillations is never large enough to enhance the power spectrum. On the contrary, the power spectrum is found to be suppressed even on those scales that leave the horizon at the first inflationary stage and remain superhorizon throughout the entire stage. We identify the cause of this suppression with the correction terms in additional to the leading order constant solution on superhorizon scales. We argue that our result is general in the sense that any intermediate break stage during inflation cannot yield an enhancement of the tensor spectrum as long as the Hubble expansion rate is non-increasing in time.

Circular polarization of the cosmic microwave background from vector and tensor perturbations

Circular polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) can be induced by Faraday conversion of the primordial linearly polarized radiation as it propagates through a birefringent medium. Recent work has shown that the dominant source of birefringence from primordial density perturbations is the anisotropic background CMB. Here we extend prior work to allow for the additional birefringence that may arise from primordial vector and tensor perturbations. We derive the formulas for the power spectrum of the induced circular polarization and apply those to the standard cosmology. We find the root-variance of the induced circular polarization to be $\sqrt{<V^2>}\sim 3\times 10^{-14}$ for scalar perturbations and $\sqrt{<V^2>}\sim 7\times 10^{-18} (r/0.06)$ for tensor perturbations with a tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$.
