Cosmic topology. Part IIa. Eigenmodes, correlation matrices, and detectability of orientable Euclidean manifolds

If the Universe has non-trivial spatial topology, observables depend on both the parameters of the spatial manifold and the position and orientation of the observer. In infinite Euclidean space, most cosmological observables arise from the amplitudes of Fourier modes of primordial scalar curvature perturbations. Topological boundary conditions replace the full set of Fourier modes with specific linear combinations of selected Fourier modes as the eigenmodes of the scalar Laplacian. We present formulas for eigenmodes in orientable Euclidean manifolds with the topologies E 1–E 6, E 11, E 12, E 16, and E 18 that encompass the full range of manifold parameters and observer positions, generalizing previous treatments. Under the assumption that the amplitudes of primordial scalar curvature eigenmodes are independent random variables, for each topology we obtain the correlation matrices of Fourier-mode amplitudes (of scalar fields linearly related to the scalar curvature) and the correlation matrices of spherical-harmonic coefficients of such fields sampled on a sphere, such as the temperature of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). We evaluate the detectability of these correlations given the cosmic variance of the observed CMB sky. We find that topologies where the distance to our nearest clone is less than about 1.2 times the diameter of the last scattering surface of the CMB give a correlation signal that is larger than cosmic variance noise in the CMB. This implies that if cosmic topology is the explanation of large-angle anomalies in the CMB, then the distance to our nearest clone is not much larger than the diameter of the last scattering surface. We argue that the topological information is likely to be better preserved in three-dimensional data, such as will eventually be available from large-scale structure surveys.

Parity-violating trispectrum from Chern-Simons gravity

A potential source for parity violation in the Universe is inflation. The simplest inflationary models have two fields: the inflaton and graviton, and the lowest-order parity-violating coupling between them is dynamical Chern-Simons (dCS) gravity with a decay constant f. Here, we show that dCS imprints a parity-violating signal in primordial scalar perturbations. Specifically, we find that, after dCS amplifies one graviton helicity due to a tachyonic instability, the graviton-mediated correlation between two pairs of scalars develops a parity-odd component. This correlation, the primordial scalar trispectrum, is then transferred to the corresponding curvature correlator and thus is imprinted in both large-scale structure (LSS) and the cosmic microwave background (CMB). We find that the parity-odd piece has roughly the same amplitude as its parity-even counterpart, scaled linearly by the degree of gravitational circular polarization Πcirc ∼ √ε[h 2/(M Pl f)] ≤ 1, with ε the slow-roll parameter, H the inflationary Hubble scale, and the upper bound saturated for purely circularly-polarized gravitons. We also find that, in the collapsed limit, the ratio of the two trispectra contains direct information about the graviton's spin. In models beyond standard inflationary dCS, e.g. those with multiple scalar fields or superluminal scalar sound speed, there can be a large enhancement factor F ≳ 106 to the trispectrum. We find that an LSS survey that contains N modes linear modes would place an nσ constraint on Πcirc r of ∼ 0.04 (n/3)(106/F)(106/N modes)1/2 from the parity-odd galaxy trispectrum, for tensor-to-scalar ratio r. We also forecast for several spectroscopic and 21-cm surveys. This constraint implies that, for high-scale single-field inflation parameters, LSS can probe very large dCS decay constants f ≲ 4 × 109 GeV(3/n)(F/106)(N modes/106)1/2. Our result is the first example of a massless particle yielding a parity-odd scalar trispectrum through spin-exchange.

On the decoherence of primordial gravitons

It is well-known that the primordial scalar curvature and tensor perturbations, ζ and γij, are conserved on super-horizon scales in minimal inflation models. However, their wave functional has a rapidly oscillating phase which is slow-roll unsuppressed, as can be seen either from boundary (total-derivative) terms of cosmological perturbations, or the WKB approximation of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation. Such an oscillatory phase involves gravitational non-linearity between scalar and tensor perturbations. By tracing out unobserved modes, the oscillatory phase causes faster decoherence of primordial gravitons compared to those by bulk interactions. Our results put a stronger lower bound of decoherence effect to the recent proposals probing squeezed primordial gravitons.

Parity-odd and even trispectrum from axion inflation

The four-point correlation function of primordial scalar perturbations has parity-even and parity-odd contributions and the parity-odd signal in cosmological observations is opening a novel window to look for new physics in the inflationary epoch. We study the distinct parity-odd and even prediction from the axion inflation model, in which the inflaton couples to a vector field via a Chern-Simons interaction, and the vector field is considered to be either approximately massless (mA ≪ Hubble scale H) or very massive (mA ∼ H). The parity-odd signal arises due to one transverse mode of the vector field being predominantly produced during inflation. We adopt the in-in formalism to evaluate the correlation functions. Considering the vector field mode function to be dominated by its real part up to a constant phase, we simplify the formulas for numerical computations. The numerical studies show that the massive and massless vector fields give significant parity-even signals, while the parity-odd contribution is about one to two orders of magnitude smaller.

Gravitational waves from primordial scalar and tensor perturbations

We investigate the second order gravitational waves induced by the primordial scalar and tensor perturbations during radiation-dominated era. The explicit expressions of the power spectra of the second order GWs are presented. We calculate the energy density spectra of the second order GWs for a monochromatic primordial power spectra. For large $k$ $\left( k>k_* \right)$, the effects of the primordial tensor perturbation with tensor-to-scalar ratio $r=A_{h}/A_{\zeta}=0.2$ lead to an around $50\% $ increase of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for LISA observations.

Gravitational wave probes of massive gauge bosons at the cosmological collider

We extend the reach of the “cosmological collider” for massive gauge boson production during inflation from the CMB scales to the interferometer scales. Considering a Chern-Simons coupling between the gauge bosons and the pseudoscalar inflaton, one of the transverse gauge modes is efficiently produced and its inverse decay leaves an imprint in the primordial scalar and tensor perturbations. We study the correlation functions of these perturbations and derive the updated constraints on the parameter space from CMB observables. We then extrapolate the tensor power spectrum to smaller scales consistently taking into account the impact of the gauge field on inflationary dynamics. Our results show that the presence of massive gauge fields during inflation can be detected from characteristic gravitational wave signals encompassing the whole range of current and planned interferometers.

Toward inflation with ns=1 in light of the Hubble tension and implications for primordial gravitational waves

Recently, it has been found that complete resolution of the Hubble tension might point to a scale-invariant Harrison-Zeldovich spectrum of primordial scalar perturbation, i.e., ${n}_{s}=1$ for ${H}_{0}\ensuremath{\sim}73\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{km}/\mathrm{s}/\mathrm{Mpc}$. We show that, for well-known slow-roll models, if inflation ends by a waterfall instability with respect to another field in the field space while inflaton is still at a deep slow-roll region, then ${n}_{s}$ can be lifted to ${n}_{s}=1$. A surprise of our result is that with prerecombination early dark energy, chaotic ${\ensuremath{\phi}}^{2}$ inflation, strongly disfavored by $\mathrm{Planck}+\mathrm{BICEP}/\mathrm{Keck}$ in standard $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}\mathrm{CDM}$, can be revived, which is now well within testable region of upcoming cosmic microwave background B-mode experiments.

Constant-roll inflation in brane induced gravity cosmology

In this article we study a constant-roll inflationary model in the context of the DGP brane-world cosmology caused by a quintessence scalar field. We determine an analytical solution for the Friedman equation coupled to the equation of motion of the scaler field. The evolution of the primordial scalar and tensor perturbations is also studied. To check the viability of the model we use numerical approaches and plot some figures. Our results for the scalar spectral index and the tensor to scaler ratio show good consistency with observations for given values of model parameters.

PBH assisted search for QCD axion dark matter

The entropy production prior to BBN era is one of ways to prevent QCD axion with the decay constant Fa ∈ [1012 GeV, 1016 GeV] from overclosing the universe when the misalignment angle is θ i = \U0001d4aa(1). As such, it is necessarily accompanied by an early matter-dominated era (EMD) provided the entropy production is achieved via the decay of a heavy particle. In this work, we consider the possibility of formation of primordial black holes during the EMD era with the assumption of the enhanced primordial scalar perturbation on small scales (k > 104 Mpc-1). In such a scenario, it is expected that PBHs with axion halo accretion develop to ultracompact minihalos (UCMHs). We study how UCMHs so obtained could be of great use in the experimental search for QCD axion dark matter with Fa ∈ [1012 GeV, 1016 GeV].

Signals of primordial black holes at gravitational wave interferometers

Primordial black holes (PBHs) can form as a result of primordial scalar perturbations at small scales. This PBH formation scenario has associated gravitational wave (GW) signatures from second-order GWs induced by the primordial curvature perturbation, and from GWs produced during an early PBH dominated era. We investigate the ability of next generation GW experiments, including BBO, LISA, and CE, to probe this PBH formation scenario in a wide mass range. Measuring the stochastic GW background with GW observatories can constrain the allowed parameter space of PBHs for masses ${10}^{9}--{10}^{27}\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{g}$. We also discuss possible GW sources from an unconstrained region where light PBHs ($<{10}^{9}\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{g}$) temporarily dominate the energy density of the universe before evaporating. We show how PBH formation impacts the reach of GW observatories to the primordial power spectrum and provide constraints implied by existing PBH bounds.

Induced gravitational waves from the cosmic coincidence

The induced gravitational wave (GW) background from enhanced primordial scalar perturbations is one of the most promising observational consequences of primordial black hole (PBH) formation from inflation. We investigate the induced GW spectrum ΩIGW from single-field inflation in the general ultra-slow-roll (USR) framework, restricting the peak frequency band to be inside 10-3-1 Hz and saturating PBH abundance to comprise all dark matter (DM) in the ultralight asteroid-mass window. By invoking successful baryogenesis driven by USR inflation, we verify the viable parameter space for the specific density ratio between baryons and PBH DM observed today, the so-called “cosmic coincidence.” We show that the cosmic coincidence requirement bounds the spectral index n UV in the high frequency limit, ΩIGW(f ≫ 1) ∝ f -2n UV , into 0 < n UV < 1, which implies that baryogenesis triggered by USR inflation for PBHs in the mass range of 10-16-10-12 M⊙ can be tested by upcoming Advanced LIGO and Virgo data and next generation experiments such as LISA, Einstein Telescope, TianQin and DECIGO.

Early and late universe holographic cosmology from a new generalized entropy

We propose a new four-parameter entropy function that generalizes the Tsallis, Rényi, Barrow, Sharma-Mittal, Kaniadakis and Loop Quantum Gravity entropies for suitable limits of the parameters. Consequently, we address the early and late universe cosmology corresponding to the proposed four-parameter entropy function. As a result, it turns out that the entropic cosmology from the generalized entropy function can unify the early inflation to the late dark energy era of the universe. In such a unified scenario, we find that – (1) the inflation era is described by a quasi de-Sitter evolution of the Hubble parameter, which has an exit at around 58 e-folding number, (2) the inflationary observable quantities like the spectral index for primordial scalar perturbation and the tensor-to-scalar ratio are simultaneously compatible with the recent Planck data, and (3) regarding the late time cosmology, the dark energy EoS parameter is found to be consistent with the Planck result for the same values of the entropy parameters that lead to the viable inflation during the early universe. Furthermore, we show that the entropic cosmology from the proposed entropy function is equivalent to holographic cosmology, where the respective holographic cut-offs are determined in terms of either particle horizon and its derivative or future horizon and its derivative.

Toward early dark energy and ns=1 with Planck , ACT, and SPT observations

We investigate the constraints on early dark energy (EDE) by combining the most recent CMB observations available, ACT DR4, SPT-3G, and Planck2018 ($\ell_\text{TT,max}=1000$) data. This combined CMB dataset favors non-zero EDE fractions and large Hubble constants. The inclusion of BAO+Pantheon data has little effect on the results, leads to $H_0=71.6( 72.9)_{-1.5}^{+2.0}$ and $73.17(72.74)^{+0.55}_{-0.77}$ km/s/Mpc for axion-like EDE and AdS-EDE, respectively. The axion-like EDE can fit the data significantly better ($\Delta \chi^2 \lesssim -10$) than $\Lambda$CDM, which is mainly driven by the ACT data. It is found again that if the current $H_0$ measured locally is correct, complete resolution of the Hubble tension seems to be pointing towards a scale invariant Harrison-Zeldovich spectrum of primordial scalar perturbation, i.e. $n_s=1$ for $H_0\sim 73$ km/s/Mpc.

Bottom-up reconstruction of viable GW170817 compatible Einstein–Gauss–Bonnet theories

In this work we shall use a bottom-up approach for obtaining viable inflationary Einstein–Gauss–Bonnet models which are also compatible with the GW170817 event. Specifically, we shall use a recently developed theoretical framework in which we shall specify only the tensor-to-scalar ratio, in terms of the e-foldings number. Starting from the tensor-to-scalar ratio, we shall reconstruct from it the Einstein–Gauss–Bonnet theory which can yield such a tensor-to-scalar ratio, finding the scalar potential and the Gauss–Bonnet coupling scalar function as functions of the e-foldings number. Accordingly, the calculation of the spectral index of the primordial scalar perturbations, and of the tensor spectral index easily is greatly simplified and these observational indices can easily be found. After presenting the general formalism for the bottom-up reconstruction, we exemplify our findings by presenting several Einstein–Gauss–Bonnet models of interest which yield a viable inflationary phenomenology. These models have also an interesting common characteristic, which is a blue tilted tensor spectral index. We also investigate the predicted energy spectrum of the primordial gravitational waves for these Einstein–Gauss–Bonnet models, and as we show, all the models yield a detectable primordial wave energy power spectrum.

Accounting for scalar non-Gaussianity in secondary gravitational waves

It is well known that enhancement in the primordial scalar perturbations over small scales generates detectable amplitudes of secondary gravitational waves (GWs), by sourcing the tensor perturbations at the second order. These stochastic gravitational waves are expected to carry the imprints of primordial non-Gaussianities. The scalar bispectrum that is typically produced in models of inflation leading to significant secondary GWs is nontrivial and highly scale dependent. In this work, we present a method to account for such general scale-dependent scalar bispectrum arising from inflationary models in the calculation of the spectral density of secondary GWs. Using this method, we compute the contributions arising from the scalar bispectrum to the amplitude of secondary GWs in two specific models of inflation driven by the canonical scalar field. We find that these non-Gaussian contributions can be highly model dependent and have to be consistently taken into account while estimating the total amplitude of the secondary GWs. Beyond the models considered, we emphasize that the method discussed is robust and free from assumptions about the shape of the bispectrum and generalizes earlier approaches adopted in the literature. We argue that this method of accounting for the scalar bispectrum shall be helpful in future computations for exotic models generating larger amplitudes of scalar non-Gaussianities along with a significant amount of secondary GWs.

Emergent universe revisited through the CSL theory

In this work we analyze how the spectrum of primordial scalar perturbations is modified, within the emergent universe scenario, when a particular version of the Continuous Spontaneous Localization (CSL) model is incorporated as the generating mechanism of initial perturbations, providing also an explanation to the quantum-to-classical transition of such perturbations. On the other hand, a phase of super-inflation, prior to slow-roll inflation, is a characteristic feature of the emergent universe hypothesis. In recent works, it was shown that the super-inflation phase could generically induce a suppression of the temperature anisotropies of the CMB at large angular scales. We study here under what conditions the CSL maintains or modifies these characteristics of the emergent universe and their compatibility with the CMB observations.

Warm constant-roll inflation in brane-world cosmology

In this paper, we study a constant-roll inflationary model in the context of brane-world cosmology caused by a quintessence scalar field for warm inflation with a constant dissipative parameter [Formula: see text]. We determine the analytical solution for the Friedmann equation coupled to the equation of motion of the scalar field. The evolution of the primordial scalar and tensor perturbations is also studied using the modified Langevin equation. To check the viability of the model, we use numerical approaches and plot some figures. Our results for the scalar spectral index and the tensor-to-scalar ratio show good consistency with observations.

Primordial black holes and induced gravitational waves in k-inflation

Recent observational constraints indicate that primordial black holes (PBHs) with the mass scale ∼ 10-12M⊙ can explain most of dark matter in the Universe. To produce this kind of PBHs, we need an enhance in the primordial scalar curvature perturbations to the order of \U0001d4aa(10-2) at the scale k ∼ 1012 Mpc-1. Here, we investigate the production of PBHs and induced gravitational waves (GWs) in the framework of k-inflation. We solve numerically the Mukhanov-Sasaki equation to obtain the primordial scalar power spectrum. In addition, we estimate the PBHs abundance fPBH peak as well as the energy density parameter ΩGW,0 of induced GWs. Interestingly enough is that for a special set of model parameters, we estimate the mass scale and the abundance of PBHs as ∼ O(10-13)M⊙ and fPBH peak=0.96, respectively. This confirms that the mechanism of PBHs production in our inflationary model can justify most of dark matter. Furthermore, we evaluate the GWs energy density parameter and conclude that it behaves like a power-law function ΩGW∼ (f/fc)n where in the infrared limit f≪ fc, the power index reads n=3-2/ln(fc/f).

Double peaks of gravitational wave spectrum induced from inflection point inflation

We investigate the possibility of inducing the gravitational waves (GWs) with double peak energy spectrum from primordial scalar perturbations in inflationary models with three inflection points. Here the inflection points can be generated from a polynomial potential or generated from a Higgs-like phi ^4 potential with the running of quartic coupling. In such models, the inflection point at large scales predicts the scalar spectral index and tensor-to-scalar ratio to be consistent with current CMB constraints, and the other two inflection points generate two large peaks in the scalar power spectrum at small scales, which can induce GWs with a double peak energy spectrum. We find that for some choices of the parameters the double peak spectrum can be detected by future GW detectors, and one of the peaks around fsimeq 10^{-9}{-}10^{-8} Hz can also explain the recent NANOGrav signal. Moreover, the peaks of the power spectrum allow for the generation of primordial black holes, which accounts for a significant fraction of dark matter.

Exploring the spectral shape of gravitational waves induced by primordial scalar perturbations and connection with the primordial black hole scenarios

There is a growing expectation that the gravitational wave detectors will start probing the stochastic gravitational wave backgrounds in the following years. We explore the spectral shapes of gravitational waves induced to second order by scalar perturbations and presumably have been produced in the early universe. We calculate the gravitational wave spectra generated during radiation and kination eras together with the associated primordial black hole counterpart. We employ power spectra for the primordial curvature perturbation generated by $\alpha$-attractors and nonminimal derivative coupling inflation models as well as Gaussian and delta-type shapes. We demonstrate the ability of the tensor modes to constrain the spectrum of the primordial curvature perturbations and discriminate among inflationary models. Gravitational wave production during kination and radiation era can also be distinguished by their spectral shapes and amplitudes.
