Generalising axion-like particle as the curvaton: sourcing primordial density perturbation and non-Gaussianities

We investigate the non-perturbatively generated axion-like particle (ALP) potential, involving fermions in the dark sector that couple to the ALP, in an early universe cosmological inflationary stage with the ALP being a spectator field. The ALP is a spectator field during inflation but it starts to oscillate and dominates the energy density of the universe after inflation ends, thereby sourcing isocurvature perturbations, while standard curvature fluctuations from the inflaton are assumed to be sub-dominant. Subsequently the ALP decays converting the isocurvature perturbations to adiabatic perturbations thereby acting as the origin of the primordial density perturbations. This is because the model has the unique feature where the extra matter in the dark sector determines the nature and shape of the potential.

Supermassive primordial black holes from inflation

There is controversy surrounding the origin and evolution of our universe's largest supermassive black holes (SMBHs). In this study, we consider the possibility that some of these black holes formed from the direct collapse of primordial density perturbations. Since the mass of a primordial black hole is limited by the size of the cosmological horizon at the time of collapse, these SMBHs must form rather late, and are naively in conflict with constraints from CMB spectral distortions. These limits can be avoided, however, if the distribution of primordial curvature perturbations is highly non-Gaussian. After quantifying the departure from Gaussianity needed to evade these bounds, we explore a model of multi-field inflation — a non-minimal, self-interacting curvaton model — which has all the necessary ingredients to yield such dramatic non-Gaussianities. We leave the detailed model building and numerics to a future study, however, as our goal is to highlight the challenges associated with forming SMBHs from direct collapse and to identify features that a successful model would need to have. This study is particularly timely in light of recent observations of high-redshift massive galaxy candidates by the James Webb Space Telescope as well as evidence from the NANOGrav experiment for a stochastic gravitational wave background consistent with SMBH mergers.

Exploring Primordial Curvature Perturbation on Small Scales with the Lensing Effect of Fast Radio Bursts

Cosmological observations, e.g., cosmic microwave background, have precisely measured the spectrum of primordial curvature perturbation on larger scales, but smaller scales are still poorly constrained. Since primordial black holes (PBHs) could form in the very early Universe through the gravitational collapse of primordial density perturbations, constraints on the PBH could encode much information on primordial fluctuations. In this work, we first derive a simple formula for the lensing effect to apply PBH constraints with the monochromatic mass distribution to an extended mass distribution. Then, we investigate the latest fast radio burst observations with this relationship to constrain two kinds of primordial curvature perturbation models on small scales. This suggests that, from the null search result of lensed fast radio bursts in currently available observations, the amplitude of primordial curvature perturbation should be less than 8 × 10−2 at the scale region of 105–106 Mpc−1. This corresponds to an interesting mass range relating to binary black holes detected by LIGO–Virgo–KAGRA and future Einstein Telescope or Cosmic Explorer.

The Warm Inflation Story

Warm inflation has normalized two ideas in cosmology, that in the early universe the initial primordial density perturbations generally could be of classical rather than quantum origin and that during inflation, particle production from interactions amongst quantum field, and its backreaction effects, can occur concurrent with inflationary expansion. When we first introduced these ideas, both were met with resistance, but today they are widely accepted as possibilities with many models and applications based on them, which is an indication of the widespread influence of warm inflation. Open quantum field theory, which has been utilized in studies of warm inflation, is by now a relevant subject in cosmology, in part due to this early work. In this review I first discuss the basic warm inflation dynamics. I then outline how to compute warm inflation dynamics from first-principles quantum field theory (QFT) and in particular how a dissipative term arises. Warm inflation models can have an inflaton mass bigger than the Hubble scale and the inflaton field excursion can remain sub-Planckian, thus overcoming the most prohibitive problems of inflation model building. I discuss the early period of my work in developing warm inflation that helped me arrive at these important features of its dynamics. Inflationary cosmology today is immersed in hypothetical models, which by now are acting as a diversion from reaching any endgame in this field. I discuss better ways to approach model selection and give necessary requirements for a well constrained and predictive inflation model. A few warm inflation models are pointed out that could be developed to this extent. I discuss how, at this stage, more progress would be made in this subject by taking a broader view on the possible early universe solutions that include not just inflation but the diverse range of options.

Towards a reliable reconstruction of the power spectrum of primordial curvature perturbation on small scales from GWTC-3

Primordial black holes (PBHs) can be both candidates of dark matter and progenitors of binary black holes (BBHs) detected by the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA collaboration. Since PBHs could form in the very early Universe through the gravitational collapse of primordial density perturbations, the population of BBHs detected by gravitational waves encodes much information on primordial curvature perturbation. In this work, we take a reliable and systematic approach to reconstruct the power spectrum of the primordial curvature perturbation from GWTC-3, under the hierarchical Bayesian inference framework, by accounting for the measurement uncertainties and selection effects. In addition to just considering the single PBH population model, we also report the results considering the multi-population model, i.e., the mixed PBH and astrophysical black hole binaries model. We find that the maximum amplitude of the reconstructed power spectrum of primordial curvature perturbation can be ∼2.5×10−2 at O(105)Mpc−1 scales, which is consistent with the PBH formation scenario from inflation at small scales.

Constraining cosmic inflation with observations: Prospects for 2030

ABSTRACT The ability to test and constrain theories of cosmic inflation will advance substantially over the next decade. Key data sources include cosmic microwave background (CMB) measurements and observations of the distribution of matter at low-redshift from optical, near-infrared, and 21-cm intensity surveys. A positive detection of a CMB B-mode consistent with a primordial stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB) is widely viewed as a smoking gun for an inflationary phase. Still, a null result does not exclude inflation. However, in a significant class of inflationary scenarios, a low SGWB amplitude is correlated with a more significant running, αs, in the primordial density perturbations than is seen with the simplest inflationary potentials. With this motivation, we forecast the precision with which the spectral index ns and αs can be constrained by currently envisaged observations, including CMB (Simons Observatory, CMB-S4 and LiteBIRD), optical/near infra-red (DESI and SPHEREx), and 21-cm intensity mapping (Tianlai and CHIME) surveys. We identify optimal combinations of data sets for constraining the running and show that they may yield additional and informative constraints on the overall inflationary parameter space if the SGWB remains undetected.

On the cosmic web elongation in fuzzy dark matter cosmologies: Effects on density profiles, shapes, and alignments of haloes

ABSTRACT The fuzzy dark matter (FDM) scenario has received increased attention in recent years due to the small-scale challenges of the vanilla Lambda cold dark matter (ΛCDM) cosmological model and the lack of any experimental evidence for any candidate particle. In this study, we use cosmological N-body simulations to investigate high-redshift dark matter haloes and their responsiveness to an FDM-like power spectrum cutoff on small scales in the primordial density perturbations. We study halo density profiles, shapes, and alignments in FDM-like cosmologies (the latter two for the first time) by providing fits and quantifying departures from ΛCDM as a function of the particle mass m. Compared to ΛCDM, the concentrations of FDM-like haloes are lower, peaking at an m-dependent halo mass and thus breaking the approximate universality of density profiles in ΛCDM. The intermediate-to-major and minor-to-major shape parameter profiles are monotonically increasing with ellipsoidal radius in N-body simulations of ΛCDM. In FDM-like cosmologies, the monotonicity is broken, haloes are more elongated around the virial radius than their ΛCDM counterparts and less elongated closer to the centre. Finally, intrinsic alignment correlations, stemming from the deformation of initially spherically collapsing haloes in an ambient gravitational tidal field, become stronger with decreasing m. At z ∼ 4, we find a 6.4σ-significance in the fractional differences between the isotropized linear alignment magnitudes Diso in the m = 10−22 eV model and ΛCDM. Such FDM-like imprints on the internal properties of virialized haloes are expected to be strikingly visible in the high-z Universe.

Geodesic motion and phase-space evolution of massive neutrinos

The non-trivial phase-space distribution of relic neutrinos is responsible for the erasure of primordial density perturbations on small scales, which is one of the main cosmological signatures of neutrino mass. In this paper, we present a new code, fastdf, for generating 1%-accurate particle realisations of the neutrino phase-space distribution using relativistic perturbation theory. We use the geodesic equation to derive equations of motion for massive particles moving in a weakly perturbed spacetime and integrate particles accordingly. We demonstrate how to combine geodesic-based initial conditions with the δf method to minimise shot noise and clarify the definition of the neutrino momentum, finding that large errors result if the wrong parametrisation is used. Compared to standard Lagrangian methods with ad-hoc thermal motions, fastdf achieves substantial improvements in accuracy. We outline the approximation schemes used to speed up the code and to ensure symplectic integration that preserves phase-space density. Finally, we discuss implications for neutrino particles in cosmological N-body simulations. In particular, we argue that particle methods can accurately describe the neutrino distribution from z = 109, when neutrinos are linear and ultra-relativistic, down to z = 0, when they are nonlinear and non-relativistic. fastdf can be used to set up accurate initial conditions (ICs) for N-body simulations and has been integrated into the higher-order IC code monofonic.

Induced gravitational waves from statistically anisotropic scalar perturbations

Scalar-induced gravitational waves (SIGWs) are attracting growing attention for probing extremely short-scale scalar perturbations via gravitational wave measurements. In this paper, we investigate the SIGWs from statistically anisotropic scalar perturbations, which are motivated in inflationary scenarios in the presence of, e.g., a vector field. While the ensemble average of the SIGW energy spectrum is isotropic for the standard statistically isotropic scalar perturbations, the statistical anisotropy in the source introduces the multipole moments of the differential SIGW energy spectrum. We consider quadrupole anisotropy in the scalar power spectrum and show that the SIGW spectrum has anisotropies up to $\ensuremath{\ell}=4$. We present generic formulas of the multipole moments and then apply them to the delta-function-like and log-normal source spectra. We find analytic expressions for the former case and show that the infrared scalings of the multipole moments are the same as the isotropic SIGWs. Interestingly, the monopole has an additional local minimum in the high-$k$ tail, a key feature to distinguish from the isotropic SIGWs. The latter log-normal case is analytic for the narrow-peak source, and we perform the numerical calculation for the broad peak. As one expects, the multipole moments become broader with increasing source width. Our results are helpful to test the isotropy of primordial density perturbations at extremely small scales through SIGWs.

Dark photon stars: formation and role as dark matter substructure

Any new vector boson with non-zero mass (a 'dark photon' or 'Proca boson') that is present during inflation is automatically produced at this time from vacuum fluctuations and can comprise all or a substantial fraction of the observed dark matter density, as shown by Graham, Mardon, and Rajendran. We demonstrate, utilising both analytic and numerical studies, that such a scenario implies an extremely rich dark matter substructure arising purely from the interplay of gravitational interactions and quantum effects. Due to a remarkable parametric coincidence between the size of the primordial density perturbations and the scale at which quantum pressure is relevant, a substantial fraction of the dark matter inevitably collapses into gravitationally bound solitons, which are fully quantum coherent objects. The central densities of these 'dark photon star', or 'Proca star', solitons are typically a factor 106 larger than the local background dark matter density, and they have characteristic masses of 10-16 M ⊙ (10-5 eV/m)3/2, where m is the mass of the vector.During and post soliton production a comparable fraction of the energy density is initially stored in, and subsequently radiated from, long-lived quasi-normal modes. Furthermore,the solitons are surrounded by characteristic 'fuzzy' dark matter halos in which quantum wave-like properties are also enhanced relative to the usual virialized dark matter expectations.Lower density compact halos, with masses a factor of ∼ 105 greater than the solitons, form at much larger scales. We argue that, at minimum, the solitons are likely to survive to the present day without being tidally disrupted. This rich substructure, which we anticipate also arises from other dark photon dark matter production mechanisms, opens up a wide range of new direct and indirect detection possibilities, as we discuss in a companion paper.

Cosmological implications of ns ≈ 1 in light of the Hubble tension

Recently, a low-z measurement of the Hubble constant, H0=73.04±1.04km/s/Mpc, was reported by the SH0ES Team. The long-standing Hubble tension, i.e. the difference between the Hubble constant from the local measurements and that inferred from the cosmic microwave background data based on the ΛCDM model, was further strengthened. There are many cosmological models modifying the cosmology after and around the recombination era to alleviate this tension. Some of the models alter the small-scale fluctuation amplitude relative to larger scales, and thus require a significant modification of the primordial density perturbation, especially the scalar spectral index, ns. In certain promising models, ns is favored to be larger than the ΛCDM prediction, and even the scale-invariant one, ns=1, is allowed. In this Letter, we focus on the very early Universe models to study the implication of such unusual ns. In particular, we find that an axiverse with axions in the equilibrium distribution during inflation can be easily consistent with ns=1. This is because the axion behaves as a curvaton with mass much smaller than the inflationary Hubble parameter. We also discuss other explanations of ns different from that obtained based on the ΛCDM.

Anisotropy of phase transition gravitational wave and its implication for primordial seeds of the Universe

We quantitatively study how the primordial density fluctuations are imprinted on the anisotropy of the phase transition gravitational wave (PTGW). Generated long before recombination and free from Silk damping, the anisotropic PTGW might reveal the density perturbation seeded from inflation or alternatives. We find new behaviors of the PTGW anisotropy power spectrum. The PTGW anisotropy is stronger than the anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background temperature at all scales, and the high-$\ell$ multiples are enhanced about 1 order due to the early integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect. Furthermore, differences in primordial power spectra at small scales manifest themselves more significantly on the angular power spectrum of PTGW anisotropy compared to that of the cosmic microwave background. These properties might provide a novel clue to understanding the primordial density perturbation of our early Universe and thereby complete our understanding of inflation theory. Taking nanohertz PTGW from dark matter models as a typical example, we obtain amplitudes of PTGW anisotropy which are about 4 or 3 orders weaker than the isotropic PTGW energy spectra.

A Constraint on Primordial B-modes from the First Flight of the Spider Balloon-borne Telescope

Abstract We present the first linear polarization measurements from the 2015 long-duration balloon flight of Spider, which is an experiment that is designed to map the polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) on degree angular scales. The results from these measurements include maps and angular power spectra from observations of 4.8% of the sky at 95 and 150 GHz, along with the results of internal consistency tests on these data. While the polarized CMB anisotropy from primordial density perturbations is the dominant signal in this region of sky, Galactic dust emission is also detected with high significance. Galactic synchrotron emission is found to be negligible in the Spider bands. We employ two independent foreground-removal techniques to explore the sensitivity of the cosmological result to the assumptions made by each. The primary method uses a dust template derived from Planck data to subtract the Galactic dust signal. A second approach, which constitutes a joint analysis of Spider and Planck data in the harmonic domain, assumes a modified-blackbody model for the spectral energy distribution of the dust with no constraint on its spatial morphology. Using a likelihood that jointly samples the template amplitude and r parameter space, we derive 95% upper limits on the primordial tensor-to-scalar ratio from Feldman–Cousins and Bayesian constructions, finding r < 0.11 and r < 0.19, respectively. Roughly half the uncertainty in r derives from noise associated with the template subtraction. New data at 280 GHz from Spider’s second flight will complement the Planck polarization maps, providing powerful measurements of the polarized Galactic dust emission.

Stasis in an expanding universe: A recipe for stable mixed-component cosmological eras

One signature of an expanding universe is the time-variation of the cosmological abundances of its different components. For example, a radiation-dominated universe inevitably gives way to a matter-dominated universe, and critical moments such as matter-radiation equality are fleeting. In this paper, we point out that this lore is not always correct, and that it is possible to obtain a form of "stasis" in which the relative cosmological abundances $\Omega_i$ of the different components remain unchanged over extended cosmological epochs, even as the universe expands. Moreover, we demonstrate that such situations are not fine-tuned, but are actually global attractors within certain cosmological frameworks, with the universe naturally evolving towards such long-lasting periods of stasis for a wide variety of initial conditions. The existence of this kind of stasis therefore gives rise to a host of new theoretical possibilities across the entire cosmological timeline, ranging from potential implications for primordial density perturbations, dark-matter production, and structure formation all the way to early reheating, early matter-dominated eras, and even the age of the universe.

Induced gravitational waves as a cosmological probe of the sound speed during the QCD phase transition

The standard model of particle physics is known to be intriguingly successful. However, their rich phenomena represented by the phase transitions (PTs) have not been completely understood yet, including the possibility of the existence of unknown dark sectors. In this paper, we investigate the measurement of the equation of state parameter w and the sound speed of the PT plasmawith the use ofthe gravitational waves (GWs) of the universe. Though the propagation of GW is insensitive to in itself, the sound speed value affects the dynamics of primordial density (or scalar curvature) perturbations, and the induced GW by their horizon reentry can then be an indirect probe both w and . We numerically reveal the concrete spectrum of the predicted induced GW with two simple examples of the scalar perturbation spectrum: the monochromatic and scale-invariant spectra. In the monochromatic case, we see that the resonant amplification and cancellation scales of the induced GW depend on the values at different times respectively. The scale-invariant case gives a more realistic spectrum and its specific shape will be compared with observations. In particular, the QCD phase transition corresponds with the frequency range of the pulsar timing array (PTA) observations. If the amplitude of primordial scalar power is in the range of 10-4 ≲ Aζ ≲ 10-2, the induced GW is consistent with current observational constraints and detectable in the future observation in Square Kilometer Array. Furthermore, the recent possible detection of stochastic GWs by NANOGrav 12.5 yr analysis [1] can be explained by the induced GW if Aζ ∼ √(7) × 10-3.

Induced gravitational waves as a probe of thermal history of the universe

The scalar perturbation induced gravitational waves are a probe of the primordial density perturbation spectrum on small scales. In this paper, we show that they can also probe the thermal history of the universe. We assume the universe underwent a stage with a constant equation of state parameter w, followed by the radiation-dominated stage of the conventional big bang universe. We find that the infrared slope of the power spectrum of the induced stochastic gravitational wave background for decelerating cosmologies is related to the equation of state of the universe. Furthermore, the induced gravitational wave spectrum has in general a broken power-law shape around the scale of reheating. Interestingly, below the threshold 0w= of the equation of state parameter, the broken power-law presents a peak for a Dirac delta peak in the scalar spectrum. For a finite width peak, the threshold changes to w=−1/15 depending on the value of the width. In some cases, such a broken power-law gravitational wave spectrum may degenerate to the spectrum from other sources like phase transitions or global cosmic strings.

Axionlike Origin of the Primordial Density Perturbation

We show that an axionlike field coupled to a new confining gauge group can generate the primordial density perturbation in the postinflation Universe. The axion decay constant and strong coupling scale are uniquely determined by observations of the density perturbation, which further suggest a temporal deconfinement of the gauge group after inflation. The resulting temperature-dependent axion potential, together with its periodic nature, gives rise to the red-tilted density perturbation, with a positive local-type non-Gaussianity of order unity.

A cosmological Higgs collider

The quantum fluctuations of the Higgs field during inflation could be a source of primordial density perturbations through Higgs-dependent inflaton decay. By measuring primordial non-Gaussianities, this so-called Higgs-modulated reheating scenario provides us a unique chance to probe Higgs interactions at extremely high energy scale, which we call the Cosmological Higgs Collider (CHC). We realize CHC in a simple scenario where the inflaton decays into Higgs-portal scalars, taking account of the decay of the Higgs fluctuation amplitude after inflation. We also calculate the CHC signals of Standard Model particles, namely their imprints in the squeezed bispectrum, which can be naturally large. The concept of CHC can be straightforwardly generalized to cosmological isocurvature colliders with other types of isocurvature perturbations.

Stochastic inflation with an extremely large number of e-folds

We propose a class of single-field, slow-roll inflation models in which a typical number of e-folds can be extremely large. The key point is to introduce a very shallow local minimum near the top of the potential in a hilltop inflation model. In particular, a typical number of e-folds is enhanced if classical behavior dominates around the local minimum such that the inflaton probability distribution is drifted to the local minimum as a whole. After the inflaton escapes from the local minimum due to the stochastic dynamics, the ordinary slow-roll inflation follows and it can generate the primordial density perturbation consistent with observation. Interestingly, our scenario inherits the advantages of the old and new inflation: the typical e-folds can be extremely large as in the old inflation, and slow-roll inflation naturally follows after the stochastic regime as in the new inflation. In our numerical example, the typical number of e-folds can be as large as 101010, which is large enough for various light scalars such the QCD axion to reach the Bunch-Davies distribution.
