Forecast of Foreground Cleaning Strategies for AliCPT-1

We report the test results of several independent foreground cleaning pipelines used in the Ali CMB Polarization Telescope experiment (AliCPT-1), a high-altitude cosmic microwave background (CMB) imager in the Northern Hemisphere with thousands of detectors dedicated to the search for a primordial CMB polarization B-mode signature. Based on simulated data from four detector modules and a single season of observation, which we refer to as Data Challenge 1 (DC1), we employ different and independent pipelines to examine the robustness and effectiveness of estimates on foreground parameters and primordial B-mode detection. The foreground cleaning strategies used in the pipelines include the parametric method of template fitting (TF) and the nonparametric methods of constrained internal linear combination (cILC), analytical blind separation (ABS), and generalized least squares (GLS). We examine the impact of possible foreground residuals on the estimate of the CMB tensor-to-scalar ratio (r) for each pipeline by changing the contamination components in the simulated maps and varying the foreground models and sky patches for various tests. According to the DC1 data with the simulation input value r true = 0.023, the foreground residual contamination levels in the TF/ABS/cILC/GLS pipelines are well within the corresponding statistical errors at the 2σ level. Furthermore, by utilizing the tension estimator, which helps identify significant residual foreground contamination in the detection of the primordial B-mode signal by quantifying the discrepancy between various r measurements, we conclude that the presence of small foreground residuals does not lead to any significant inconsistency in the estimation of r.

Optimization of foreground moment deprojection for semi-blind CMB polarization reconstruction

Upcoming Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) experiments, aimed at measuring primordial CMB polarization B-modes, require exquisite control of instrumental systematics and Galactic foreground contamination. Blind minimum-variance techniques, like the Needlet Internal Linear Combination (NILC), have proven effective in reconstructing the CMB polarization signal and mitigating foregrounds and systematics across diverse sky models without suffering from foreground mismodelling errors. Still, residual foreground contamination from NILC may bias the recovered CMB polarization at large angular scales when confronted with the most complex foreground scenarios.By adding constraints to NILC to deproject statistical moments of the Galactic emission, the Constrained Moment ILC (cMILC) method has been demonstrated to further enhance foreground subtraction, albeit with an associated increase in overall noise variance. Faced with this trade-off between foreground bias reduction and overall variance minimization, there is still no recipe on which moments to deproject and which are better suited for blind variance minimization. To address this, we introduce the optimized cMILC (ocMILC) pipeline, which performs full automated optimization of the required number and set of foreground moments to deproject, pivot parameter values, and deprojection coefficients across the sky and angular scales, depending on the actual sky complexity, available frequency coverage, and experiment sensitivity. The optimal number of moments for deprojection, before paying significant noise penalty, is determined through a data diagnosis inspired by the Generalized NILC (GNILC) method.Validated on B-mode simulations of the PICO space mission concept with four challenging foreground models, ocMILC exhibits lower Galactic foreground contamination compared to NILC and cMILC at all angular scales, with limited noise penalty. This multi-layer optimization enables the ocMILC pipeline to achieve unbiased posteriors of the tensor-to-scalar ratio, regardless of foreground complexity.

Constraining the polarisation flux density and angle of point sources by training a convolutional neural network

Context. Constraining the polarisation properties of extragalactic point sources is a relevant task not only because they are one of the main contaminants for primordial cosmic microwave background B-mode detection if the tensor-to-scalar ratio is lower than r = 0.001, but also for a better understanding of the properties of radio-loud active galactic nuclei. Aims. We develop and train a machine learning model based on a convolutional neural network to learn how to estimate the polarisation flux density and angle of point sources embedded in cosmic microwave background images knowing only their positions. Methods. To train the neural network, we used realistic simulations of patches of 32 × 32 pixels in area at the 217 GHz Planck channel with injected point sources at their centres. The patches also contain a realistic background composed of the cosmic microwave background signal, the Galactic thermal dust, and instrumental noise. We split our analysis into three parts: firstly, we studied the comparison between true and estimated polarisation flux densities for P, Q, and U simulations. Secondly, we analysed the comparison between true and estimated polarisation angles. Finally, we studied the performance of our model with the 217 GHz Planck map and compared our results against the detected sources of the Second Planck Catalogue of Compact Sources (PCCS2). Results. We find that our model can be used to reliably constrain the polarisation flux density of sources above the 80 mJy level. For this limit, we obtain relative errors of lower than 30% in most of the flux density levels. Training the same network with Q and U maps, the reliability limit is above ±250 mJy when determining the polarisation angle of both Q and U sources. Above that cut, the network can constrain angles with a 1σ uncertainty of ±29° and ±32° for Q and U sources, respectively. We test this neural network against real data from the 217 GHz Planck channel, obtaining similar results to the PCCS2 for some sources; although we also find discrepancies in the 300–400mJy flux density range with respect to the Planck catalogue. Conclusions. Based on these results, our model appears to be a promising tool for estimating the polarisation flux densities and angles of point sources above 80 mJy in any catalogue with very small computational time requirements.

Primordial standard clock models and CMB residual anomalies

The residuals of the power spectra of WMAP and Planck's cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies data are known to exhibit a few interesting anomalies at different scales with marginal statistical significance. Combining bottom-up and top-down model-building approaches and using a pipeline that efficiently compares model predictions with data, we construct a model of primordial standard clock that is able to link and address the anomalies at both the large and small scales. This model, and its variant, provide some of the best fits to the feature anomalies in CMB. According to Bayes evidences, these models are currently statistically indistinguishable from the Standard Model. We show that the difference between them will soon become statistically significant with various higher quality data on the CMB polarization. We demonstrate that such a model-building and data-analyses process may be used to uncover a portion of detailed evolutionary history of our universe during its primordial epoch.

Velocity dispersion and dynamical mass for 270 galaxy clusters in the Planck PSZ1 catalogue

We present the velocity dispersion and dynamical mass estimates for 270 galaxy clusters included in the first Planck Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) source catalogue, the PSZ1. Part of the results presented here were achieved during a two-year observational program, the ITP, developed at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory (La Palma, Spain). In the ITP we carried out a systematic optical follow-up campaign of all the 212 unidentified PSZ1 sources in the northern sky that have a declination above −15° and are without known counterparts at the time of the publication of the catalogue. We present for the first time the velocity dispersion and dynamical mass of 58 of these ITP PSZ1 clusters, plus 35 newly discovered clusters that are not associated with the PSZ1 catalogue. Using Sloan Digital Sky Survey archival data, we extend this sample, including 212 already confirmed PSZ1 clusters in the northern sky. Using a subset of 207 of these galaxy clusters, we constrained the MSZ–Mdyn scaling relation, finding a mass bias of (1 − B) = 0.83 ± 0.07(stat) ± 0.02(sys). We show that this value is consistent with other results in the literature that were obtained with different methods (X-ray, dynamical masses, or weak-lensing mass proxies). This result cannot dissolve the tension between primordial cosmic microwave background anisotropies and cluster number counts in the ΩM–σ8 plane.

Peeling off foregrounds with the constrained moment ILC method to unveil primordial CMB B modes

ABSTRACT Galactic foregrounds are the main obstacle to observations of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) B-mode polarization. In addition to obscuring the inflationary B-mode signal by several orders of magnitude, Galactic foregrounds have non-trivial spectral signatures that are partially unknown and distorted by averaging effects along the line of sight, within the pixel/beam window, and by various analysis choices (e.g. spherical harmonic transforms and filters). Statistical moment expansion methods provide a powerful tool for modelling the effective Galactic foreground emission resulting from these averaging effects in CMB observations, while blind component separation treatments can handle unknown foregrounds. In this work, we combine these two approaches to develop a new semiblind component separation method at the intersection of parametric and blind methods, called constrained moment ILC (cMILC). This method adds several constraints to the standard ILC method to deproject the main statistical moments of the Galactic foreground emission. Applications to maps are performed in needlet space and when compared to the NILC method, this helps in significantly reducing residual foreground contamination (bias, variance, and skewness) in the reconstructed CMB B-mode map, power spectrum, and tensor-to-scalar ratio. We consider sky simulations for experimental settings similar to those of LiteBIRD and PICO, illustrating which trade-offs between residual foreground biases and degradation of the constraint on r can be expected within the new cMILC framework. We also outline several directions that require more work in preparation for the coming analysis challenges.

Detection likelihood of cluster-induced CMB polarization

Nearby galaxy clusters can potentially induce sub-microkelvin polarization signals in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) at characteristic scales of a few arcminutes. We explore four such polarization signals induced in a rich nearby fiducial cluster and calculate the likelihood of their detection by a telescope project with capabilities such as those of the Simons Observatory (SO). In our feasibility analysis, we include instrumental noise, primordial CMB anisotropy, statistical thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) cluster signal, and point source confusion, assuming a few percent of the nominal telescope observation time of an SO-like project. Our analysis indicates that the thermal SZ intensity can be sensitively mapped in rich nearby clusters and that the kinematic SZ intensity can be measured with high statistical significance toward a fast moving nearby cluster. The detection of polarized SZ signals will be quite challenging but could still be feasible toward several very rich nearby clusters with very high SZ intensity. The polarized SZ signal from a sample of ∼20 clusters can be statistically detected at S/N ∼ 3, if observed for several months.

Curvature perturbations from stochastic particle production during inflation

We calculate the curvature power spectrum sourced by spectator fields that are excited repeatedly and non-adiabatically during inflation. In the absence of detailed information of the nature of spectator field interactions, we consider an ensemble of models with intervals between the repeated interactions and interaction strengths drawn from simple probabilistic distributions. We show that the curvature power spectra of each member of the ensemble shows rich structure with many features, and there is a large variability between different realizations of the same ensemble. Such features can be probed by the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and large scale structure observations. They can also have implications for primordial black hole formation and CMB spectral distortions. The geometric random walk behavior of the spectator field allows us to calculate the ensemble-averaged power spectrum of curvature perturbations semi-analytically. For sufficiently large stochastic sourcing, the ensemble-averaged power spectrum shows a scale dependence arising from the time spent by modes outside the horizon during the period of particle production, in spite of there being no preferred scale in the underlying model. We find that the magnitude of the ensemble-averaged power spectrum overestimates the typical power spectra in the ensemble because the ensemble distribution of the power spectra is highly non-Gaussian with fat tails.

CMB Shadows: The Effect of Interstellar Extinction on Cosmic Microwave Background Polarization and Temperature Anisotropy

Abstract We evaluate the degradation of the accuracy of the component separation between the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and foreground components caused by neglect of absorption of the CMB’s monopole component by the galactic interstellar matter. The amplitude of the temperature anisotropy caused by the CMB shadow, due to dust components, is about 1 μK. This value is comparable to the required noise level necessary to probe non-Gaussianity studies with upcoming CMB experiments. In addition, the amplitude of the polarization caused by the CMB shadow due to dust is comparable to or larger than the rms value of the CMB B-mode polarization, imprinted by primordial gravitational waves. We show that applying a single-power-law model as the dust spectrum to observed multifrequency data introduces systematic errors, which are comparable to or larger than the required noise level for forthcoming CMB B-mode polarization experiments. Deducing the intrinsic spectrum of dust emission from the submillimeter wave band data reduces the systematic error to below the required noise level. However, this method requires dust temperature measurements with an accuracy of better than a few percent. We conclude that the CMB shadow due to dust must be considered in future CMB missions for achieving their targeted sensitivity. Our results will be important to detect the primordial CMB B-mode polarization, with the amplitude of the tensor-to-scalar ratio of r = 10−3.

New constraints on the mass bias of galaxy clusters from the power spectra of the thermal Sunyaev–Zeldovich effect and cosmic shear

Abstract The thermal Sunyaev–Zeldovich (tSZ) power spectrum is a powerful probe of the present-day amplitude of matter density fluctuations, and has been measured up to $\ell \approx 10^3$ from the Planck data. The largest systematic uncertainty in the interpretation of this data is the so-called “mass bias” parameter B, which relates the true halo mass to the mass proxy used by the Planck team as $M\,_{\rm 500c}^{\rm Planck}=M\,_{\rm 500c}^{\rm true}/B$. Since the power spectrum of the cosmic weak lensing shear is also sensitive to the amplitude of matter density fluctuations via $S_8\equiv \sigma _8 \Omega _{\rm m}^{\alpha }$ with $\alpha \sim 0.5$, we can break the degeneracy between the mass bias and the cosmological parameters by combining the tSZ and cosmic shear power spectra. In this paper, we perform a joint likelihood analysis of the tSZ power spectrum from Planck and the cosmic shear power spectrum from Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam. Our analysis does not use the primordial cosmic microwave background (CMB) information. We obtain a new constraint on the mass bias as $B = 1.37 ^{+0.15}_{-0.23}$ or $(1-b) = B^{-1}=0.73^{+0.08}_{-0.13}$ ($68\%$ confidence limit), for $\sigma _8 < 0.9$. This value of B is lower than that needed to reconcile the tSZ data with the primordial CMB and CMB lensing data, i.e., $B = 1.64 \pm 0.19$, but is consistent with the mass bias expected from hydrodynamical simulations, $B = 1.28 \pm 0.20$. Thus our results indicate that the mass bias is consistent with the non-thermal pressure support from mass accretion of galaxy clusters via the cosmic structure formation, and that the cosmologies inferred from the tSZ and the cosmic shear are consistent with each other.

Optimal constraints on primordial gravitational waves from the lensed CMB

We demonstrate how to obtain optimal constraints on a primordial gravitational wave component in lensed Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) data under ideal conditions. We first derive an estimator of the tensor-to-scalar ratio, $r$, by using an error-controlled close approximation to the exact posterior, under the assumption of Gaussian primordial CMB and lensing deflection potential. This combines fast internal iterative lensing reconstruction with optimal recovery of the unlensed CMB. We evaluate its performance on simulated low-noise polarization data targeted at the recombination peak. We carefully demonstrate our $r$-posterior estimate is optimal and shows no significant bias, making it the most powerful estimator of primordial gravitational waves from the CMB. We compare these constraints to those obtained from $B$-mode band-power likelihood analyses on the same simulated data, before and after map-level quadratic estimator delensing, and iterative delensing. Internally, iteratively delensed band powers are only slightly less powerful on average (by less than 10\%), promising close-to-optimal constraints from a stage IV CMB experiment.

Average fractional polarization of extragalactic sources at Planck frequencies

Recent detailed simulations have shown that an insufficiently accurate characterization of the contamination of unresolved polarized extragalactic sources can seriously bias measurements of the primordial cosmic microwave background (CMB) power spectrum if the tensor-to-scalar ratio r ∼ 0.001, as predicted by models currently of special interest (e.g., Starobinsky’s R2 and Higgs inflation). This has motivated a reanalysis of the median polarization fraction of extragalactic sources (radio-loud AGNs and dusty galaxies) using data from the Planck polarization maps. Our approach, exploiting the intensity distribution analysis, mitigates or overcomes the most delicate aspects of earlier analyses based on stacking techniques. By means of simulations, we have shown that the residual noise bias on the median polarization fraction, Πmedian, of extragalactic sources is generally ≲0.1%. For radio sources, we have found Πmedian ≃ 2.83%, with no significant dependence on either frequency or flux density, in good agreement with the earlier estimate and with high-sensitivity measurements in the frequency range 5–40 GHz. No polarization signal is detected in the case of dusty galaxies, implying 90% confidence upper limits of Πdusty ≲ 2.2% at 353 GHz and of ≲3.9% at 217 GHz. The contamination of CMB polarization maps by unresolved point sources is discussed.

Exploring cosmic origins with CORE: B-mode component separation

We demonstrate that, for the baseline design of the CORE satellite mission, the polarized foregrounds can be controlled at the level required to allow the detection of the primordial cosmic microwave background (CMB) B-mode polarization with the desired accuracy at both reionization and recombination scales, for tensor-to-scalar ratio values of r≳ 5× 10−3. We consider detailed sky simulations based on state-of-the-art CMB observations that consist of CMB polarization with τ=0.055 and tensor-to-scalar values ranging from r=10−2 to 10−3, Galactic synchrotron, and thermal dust polarization with variable spectral indices over the sky, polarized anomalous microwave emission, polarized infrared and radio sources, and gravitational lensing effects. Using both parametric and blind approaches, we perform full component separation and likelihood analysis of the simulations, allowing us to quantify both uncertainties and biases on the reconstructed primordial B-modes. Under the assumption of perfect control of lensing effects, CORE would measure an unbiased estimate of r=(5 ± 0.4)× 10−3 after foreground cleaning. In the presence of both gravitational lensing effects and astrophysical foregrounds, the significance of the detection is lowered, with CORE achieving a 4σ-measurement of r=5× 10−3 after foreground cleaning and 60% delensing. For lower tensor-to-scalar ratios (r=10−3) the overall uncertainty on r is dominated by foreground residuals, not by the 40% residual of lensing cosmic variance. Moreover, the residual contribution of unprocessed polarized point-sources can be the dominant foreground contamination to primordial B-modes at this r level, even on relatively large angular scales, ℓ ∼ 50. Finally, we report two sources of potential bias for the detection of the primordial B-modes by future CMB experiments: (i) the use of incorrect foreground models, e.g. a modelling error of Δβs = 0.02 on the synchrotron spectral indices may result in an excess in the recovered reionization peak corresponding to an effective Δ r > 10−3; (ii) the average of the foreground line-of-sight spectral indices by the combined effects of pixelization and beam convolution, which adds an effective curvature to the foreground spectral energy distribution and may cause spectral degeneracies with the CMB in the frequency range probed by the experiment.

Bandpass mismatch error for satellite CMB experiments I: estimating the spurious signal

Future Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) satellite missions aim to use the B mode polarization to measure the tensor-to-scalar ratio r with a sensitivity σr ≲ 10−3. Achieving this goal will not only require sufficient detector array sensitivity but also unprecedented control of all systematic errors inherent in CMB polarization measurements. Since polarization measurements derive from differences between observations at different times and from different sensors, detector response mismatches introduce leakages from intensity to polarization and thus lead to a spurious B mode signal. Because the expected primordial B mode polarization signal is dwarfed by the known unpolarized intensity signal, such leakages could contribute substantially to the final error budget for measuring r. Using simulations we estimate the magnitude and angular spectrum of the spurious B mode signal resulting from bandpass mismatch between different detectors. It is assumed here that the detectors are calibrated, for example using the CMB dipole, so that their sensitivity to the primordial CMB signal has been perfectly matched. Consequently the mismatch in the frequency bandpass shape between detectors introduces differences in the relative calibration of galactic emission components. We simulate this effect using a range of scanning patterns being considered for future satellite missions. We find that the spurious contribution to r from the reionization bump on large angular scales (ℓ < 10) is ≈ 10−3 assuming large detector arrays and 20 percent of the sky masked. We show how the amplitude of the leakage depends on the nonuniformity of the angular coverage in each pixel that results from the scan pattern.

Angular dependence of primordial trispectra and CMB spectral distortions

Under the presence of anisotropic sources in the inflationary era, the trispectrum of the primordial curvature perturbation has a very specific angular dependence between each wavevector that is distinguishable from the one encountered when only scalar fields are present, characterized by an angular dependence described by Legendre polynomials. We examine the imprints left by curvature trispectra on the TTμ bispectrum, generated by the correlation between temperature anisotropies (T) and chemical potential spectral distortions (μ) of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). Due to the angular dependence of the primordial signal, the corresponding TTμ bispectrum strongly differs in shape from TTμ sourced by the usual gNL or τNL local trispectra, enabling us to obtain an unbiased estimation. From a Fisher matrix analysis, we find that, in a cosmic-variance-limited (CVL) survey of TTμ, a minimum detectable value of the quadrupolar Legendre coefficient is d2 ∼ 0.01, which is 4 orders of magnitude better than the best value attainable from the TTTT CMB trispectrum. In the case of an anisotropic inflationary model with a f(ϕ)F2 interaction (coupling the inflaton field ϕ with a vector kinetic term F2), the size of the curvature trispectrum is related to that of quadrupolar power spectrum asymmetry, g*. In this case, a CVL measurement of TTμ makes it possible to measure g* down to 10−3.

Kinematic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Effect with Projected Fields: A Novel Probe of the Baryon Distribution with Planck, WMAP, and WISE Data.

The kinematic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (KSZ) effect-the Doppler boosting of cosmic microwave background (CMB) photons due to Compton scattering off free electrons with nonzero bulk velocity-probes the abundance and the distribution of baryons in the Universe. All KSZ measurements to date have explicitly required spectroscopic redshifts. Here, we implement a novel estimator for the KSZ-large-scale structure cross-correlation based on projected fields: it does not require redshift estimates for individual objects, allowing KSZ measurements from large-scale imaging surveys. We apply this estimator to cleaned CMB temperature maps constructed from Planck and WMAP data and a galaxy sample from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE). We measure the KSZ effect at 3.8σ-4.5σ significance, depending on the use of additional WISE galaxy bias constraints. We verify that our measurements are robust to possible dust emission from the WISE galaxies. Assuming the standard Λ cold dark matter cosmology, we directly constrain (f_{b}/0.158)(f_{free}/1.0)=1.48±0.19 (statistical error only) at redshift z≈0.4, where f_{b} is the fraction of matter in baryonic form and f_{free} is the free electron fraction. This is the tightest KSZ-derived constraint reported to date on these parameters. Astronomers have long known that baryons do not trace dark matter on ∼ kiloparsec scales and there has been strong evidence that galaxies are baryon poor. The consistency between the f_{b} value found here and the values inferred from analyses of the primordial CMB and big bang nucleosynthesis verifies that baryons approximately trace the dark matter distribution down to ∼ megaparsec scales. While our projected-field estimator is already competitive with other KSZ approaches when applied to current data sets (because we are able to use the full-sky WISE photometric survey), it will yield enormous signal-to-noise ratios when applied to upcoming high-resolution, multifrequency CMB surveys.

Kinetic Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect in an anisotropic CMB model: Measuring low multipoles of the CMB at higher redshifts using intensity and polarization spectral distortions

We present a novel mathematical formalism that allows to easily compute the expected kinetic Sunyaev Zeldovich (kSZ) signal in intensity and polarization due to an anisotropic primordial Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). We derive the expected intensity and polarization distortions in the direction of non-moving galaxy clusters and then we generalize our calculations for non-zero peculiar velocity. We show that, in the direction of moving clusters, low CMB multipoles impose intensity and polarization spectral distortions with different frequency dependences. The polarization signal primarily probes the quadrupole moment of the CMB, with a significant contribution from the primordial dipole and octupole moments. For a typical cluster velocity of 1000 km/s, corrections to the quadrupole-induced polarization of a non-moving cluster are of the order of 2-10% between 200-600 GHz, and depend on cluster's position on the sky, velocity magnitude and direction of motion. We also find that the angular dependence of the signal varies with frequency of observation. The distinct frequency and angular dependences of the polarization induced by the primordial dipole and octupole can be exploited to measure them despite other physical effects and foregrounds. Contrary to polarization, intensity distortions are affected by all the CMB multipoles, so they cannot be readily used to probe the low multipoles at higher redshifts. However, correlations between intensity and polarization signals, can be used to enhance the signal to noise ratio for the measurements of the primordial dipole, quadrupole and octupole. The more general calculation of the aberration kernel presented in this work has applications reaching beyond the SZ cluster science addressed here. For example, it can be exploited to the deboost/deaberrate CMB multipoles as observed in our local frame.

Reconstruction of CMB temperature anisotropies with primordial CMB induced polarization in galaxy clusters

Abstract Scattering of cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation in galaxy clusters induces polarization signals determined by the quadrupole anisotropy in the photon distribution at the location of clusters. This ‘remote quadrupole’ derived from the measurements of the induced polarization in galaxy clusters provides an opportunity to reconstruct local CMB temperature anisotropies. In this Letter, we develop an algorithm of the reconstruction through the estimation of the underlying primordial gravitational potential, which is the origin of the CMB temperature and polarization fluctuations and CMB induced polarization in galaxy clusters. We found a nice reconstruction for the quadrupole and octopole components of the CMB temperature anisotropies with the assistance of the CMB induced polarization signals. The reconstruction can be an important consistency test on the puzzles of CMB anomalies, especially for the low-quadrupole and axis-of-evil problems reported in Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe and Planck data.

Planckintermediate results

The polarized thermal emission from Galactic dust is the main foreground present in measurements of the polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) at frequencies above 100GHz. We exploit the Planck HFI polarization data from 100 to 353GHz to measure the dust angular power spectra $C_\ell^{EE,BB}$ over the range $40<\ell<600$ well away from the Galactic plane. These will bring new insights into interstellar dust physics and a precise determination of the level of contamination for CMB polarization experiments. We show that statistical properties of the emission can be characterized over large fractions of the sky using $C_\ell$. For the dust, they are well described by power laws in $\ell$ with exponents $\alpha^{EE,BB}=-2.42\pm0.02$. The amplitudes of the polarization $C_\ell$ vary with the average brightness in a way similar to the intensity ones. The dust polarization frequency dependence is consistent with modified blackbody emission with $\beta_d=1.59$ and $T_d=19.6$K. We find a systematic ratio between the amplitudes of the Galactic $B$- and $E$-modes of 0.5. We show that even in the faintest dust-emitting regions there are no "clean" windows where primordial CMB $B$-mode polarization could be measured without subtraction of dust emission. Finally, we investigate the level of dust polarization in the BICEP2 experiment field. Extrapolation of the Planck 353GHz data to 150GHz gives a dust power $\ell(\ell+1)C_\ell^{BB}/(2\pi)$ of $1.32\times10^{-2}\mu$K$_{CMB}^2$ over the $40<\ell<120$ range; the statistical uncertainty is $\pm0.29$ and there is an additional uncertainty (+0.28,-0.24) from the extrapolation, both in the same units. This is the same magnitude as reported by BICEP2 over this $\ell$ range, which highlights the need for assessment of the polarized dust signal even in the cleanest windows of the sky.

Constraints on massive neutrinos from the pairwise kinematic Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect

We present the mean pairwise momentum of clusters, as observed through the kinematic Sunvaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect, as a novel probe of massive neutrinos. We find that kSZ measurements with current and upcoming surveys will provide complementary constraints on the sum of neutrino masses from large scale structure and will improve on Planck satellite measurements of the primordial cosmic microwave background (CMB) and CMB lensing. Central to the constraints is a distinctive scale dependency of the kSZ neutrino signature on the mean pairwise momentum of clusters that we do not expect to be mirrored in systematic effects that change the overall amplitude of the signal, like the cluster optical depth. Assuming a minimal $\Lambda$CDM cosmology including massive neutrinos with Planck primordial CMB priors combined with conservative kSZ specifications, we forecast $68%$ upper limits on the neutrino mass sum of $290$ meV, $220$ meV, $96$ meV for "Stage II" (ACTPol + BOSS), "Stage III" (Advanced ACTPol + BOSS), and "Stage IV" (CMB-S4 + DESI) surveys respectively, compared to the Planck alone forecast of 540 meV. These forecasts include the ability to simultaneously constrain the neutrino mass sum and the mass-averaged optical depth of the cluster sample in each redshift bin. If the averaged optical depth of clusters can be measured with few percent accuracy and a lower limiting mass is assumed, the projected kSZ constraints improve further to $120$ meV, $90$ meV and $33$ meV (Stage II, III and IV). These forecasts represent a conservative estimate of neutrino constraints using cross-correlations of arcminute-resolution CMB measurements and spectroscopic galaxy surveys. More information relevant for neutrino constraints is available from these surveys, such as galaxy clustering, weak lensing, and CMB temperature and polarization.
