Metabolic niches in the rhizosphere microbiome: dependence on soil horizons, root traits and climate variables in forest ecosystems.

Understanding belowground plant-microbial interactions is important for biodiversity maintenance, community assembly and ecosystem functioning of forest ecosystems. Consequently, a large number of studies were conducted on root and microbial interactions, especially in the context of precipitation and temperature gradients under global climate change scenarios. Forests ecosystems have high biodiversity of plants and associated microbes, and contribute to major primary productivity of terrestrial ecosystems. However, the impact of root metabolites/exudates and root traits on soil microbial functional groups along these climate gradients is poorly described in these forest ecosystems. The plant root system exhibits differentiated exudation profiles and considerable trait plasticity in terms of root morphological/phenotypic traits, which can cause shifts in microbial abundance and diversity. The root metabolites composed of primary and secondary metabolites and volatile organic compounds that have diverse roles in appealing to and preventing distinct microbial strains, thus benefit plant fitness and growth, and tolerance to abiotic stresses such as drought. Climatic factors significantly alter the quantity and quality of metabolites that forest trees secrete into the soil. Thus, the heterogeneities in the rhizosphere due to different climate drivers generate ecological niches for various microbial assemblages to foster beneficial rhizospheric interactions in the forest ecosystems. However, the root exudations and microbial diversity in forest trees vary across different soil layers due to alterations in root system architecture, soil moisture, temperature, and nutrient stoichiometry. Changes in root system architecture or traits, e.g. root tissue density (RTD), specific root length (SRL), and specific root area (SRA), impact the root exudation profile and amount released into the soil and thus influence the abundance and diversity of different functional guilds of microbes. Here, we review the current knowledge about root morphological and functional (root exudation) trait changes that affect microbial interactions along drought and temperature gradients. This review aims to clarify how forest trees adapt to challenging environments by leveraging their root traits to interact beneficially with microbes. Understanding these strategies is vital for comprehending plant adaptation under global climate change, with significant implications for future research in plant biodiversity conservation, particularly within forest ecosystems.

Ecosystem importance of roots: A literature review

Fine roots are all those with a diameter ≤2 mm. These roots are responsible for a significant portion of the primary productivity of terrestrial ecosystems, being important for providing resources to the soil microbial community and for influencing the cycling of carbon and nutrients. Despite their recognized importance, fine roots are commonly neglected in plant biomass studies. Root biomass studies are generally limited throughout the world, mainly due to the methodological complexity involved in the analytical processes. The objective of this work was to carry out a review of studies on the topic of roots, addressing the development of technologies in the analytical process and the importance of this dynamic biomass component in ecosystem processes related to carbon cycling and soil nutrients. We emphasize here the importance and need for new scientific research that seeks to develop methods of analysis, as well as to estimate the underground primary productivity, especially that of fine roots, so that the processes involved in the cycling of carbon and nutrients are better elucidated.

Biological nitrogen fixation and the role of soil diazotroph niche breadth in representative terrestrial ecosystems

Biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) driven by diazotrophs is a fundamental process underpinning the primary productivity of terrestrial ecosystems and plays a pivotal role in the global nitrogen cycle. However, the relationships between BNF function and soil diazotroph taxa with different niche breadths remain unclear. This study investigated the N2 fixation rate and community structure of diazotrophs in soils collected from representative terrestrial ecosystems in China—agricultural, desert, forest, grassland and wetland—and explored the specific contributions of groups of diazotrophs with different niche breadths to the N2 fixation rate. Among all the ecosystems, the N2 fixation rate, nifH gene abundance and diazotroph diversity were highest in the wetland ecosystems. The N2 fixation rate was significantly (P < 0.05) positively correlated with diazotroph diversity, indicating a relationship between microbial community diversity and ecosystem functionality. Furthermore, the N2 fixation rate and Shannon index were significantly (P < 0.05) positively correlated with the abundances of diazotrophs classified as specialists and opportunists. Structural equation modeling indicated that geographical factors and climatic factors affected the abundance of specialists and opportunists directly or indirectly through soil physicochemical properties, which in turn affected N2 fixation rates. Collectively, these valuable insights into the intrinsic relationship between nitrogen-fixing function and groups of soil diazotroph taxa with different niche breadths advance our understanding of BNF across terrestrial ecosystems.

A remote sensing based method for assessing the impact of O3 on the net primary productivity of terrestrial ecosystems in China

O3 pollution in China has been increasing in recent years, but the process of O3 impact on net primary productivity of terrestrial ecosystems remains unclear. We attempts to explore a remote sensing-based method to assess the impact of O3 on NPP of China’s terrestrial ecosystems by combining MODIS NPP and the latest ground observation data of O3 concentration. By comparing the NPP data of MODIS image pixels with the 6-year average AOT40 data of corresponding pixels, we extracted the signal data that highlighted the effects of O3 on NPP and established the response relationships between AOT40 and NPP. It was found that NPP was significantly negatively correlated with AOT40 in farmland and grassland ecosystems in China (farmland: r = 0.8674, p &amp;lt; 0.003, grassland: r = 0.7181, p &amp;lt; 0.03). Then the response relationships were adopted to evaluate the effect in China in 2014. The results showed that the estimated percentage of O3-induced NPP decline was in the range of 5%–35%. Among them, the most significant declines were found in farmland ecosystems, with the vast majority of declines in 10%–35%. The decrease rate of evergreen coniferous forests ranked second, mostly in the range of 15%–20%. The grassland ecosystems declined at a lower rate, almost between 5% and 15%. And the evergreen broad-leaved forests has the lowest decline rate, most distributed in 0%–5%. The highest percentage decreases were mainly found in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and Shandong Province. And the decline rate of farmland ecosystems was significantly higher than other ecosystem types.

A critical review of methods, principles and progress for estimating the gross primary productivity of terrestrial ecosystems

The gross primary productivity (GPP) of terrestrial ecosystems reflects the total amount of organic carbon assimilated by vegetation through photosynthesis per given unit of time and area, which represents the largest carbon flux in carbon budget and plays a fundamental part in the carbon cycle. However, challenges such as determining how to select appropriate methods to improve GPP estimation accuracy at the regional/global scale remain. Therefore, it is of great importance to comprehensively review the research progress on the methods for estimating the GPP of terrestrial ecosystems and to summarize their flaws, merits and application fields. In this study, we reviewed studies of GPP estimation at different spatiotemporal scales, and systematically reviewed the principles, formulas, representative methods (Ground observations, Model simulations, SIF based GPP, and NIRv based GPP) at different scales and models (Statistical/Ecological process/Machine learning/Light use efficiency models), as well as the advantages and limitations of each research method/models. A comprehensive comparison of GPP research methods was performed. We expect that this work will provide some straightforward references for researchers to further understand and to choose appropriate models for assessing forest ecosystem GPP according to the research objectives and area. Thus, critical and effective GPP estimation methods can be established for the terrestrial carbon cycle, carbon neutralization accounting and local carbon emission reduction policy formulation and implementation.

Primary production in subsidized green-brown food webs

Ecosystems worldwide receive large amounts of nutrients from both natural processes and human activities. While direct subsidy effects on primary production are relatively well-known (the green food web), the indirect effects of subsidies on producers as mediated by the brown food web and predators are poorly considered. With a dynamical green-brown food web model, parameterized using empirical estimates from the literature, we illustrate the effect of organic and inorganic nutrient subsidies on net primary production (NPP) (i.e., after removing loss to herbivory) in two idealized ecosystems—one terrestrial and one aquatic. We find that nutrient subsidies increase net primary production, an effect that saturates with increasing subsidies. Changing the quality of subsidies from inorganic to organic tends to increase net primary production in terrestrial ecosystems, but less often so in aquatic ecosystems. This occurs when organic nutrient inputs promote detritivores in the brown food web, and hence predators that in turn regulate herbivores, thereby promoting primary production. This previously largely overlooked effect is further enhanced by ecosystem properties such as fast decomposition and low rates of nutrient additions and demonstrates the importance of nutrient subsidy quality on ecosystem functioning.

Identification of factors influencing net primary productivity of terrestrial ecosystems based on interpretable machine learning --evidence from the county-level administrative districts in China

Global climate change is rooted in the imbalance between carbon sources and sinks, and net-zero greenhouse gas emissions should focus not only on the source-side drivers but also on the sink-side influencing factors. Taking the county-level administrative districts in China as the sample, this study uses machine learning models to fit the relationship between socioeconomic development (SED) and net primary productivity (NPP) of terrestrial ecosystems. Moreover, it identifies key influencing factors and their effects based on the SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) algorithm. The results show that the districts with low terrestrial NPP show the characteristics of agglomeration distribution. The eight key factors, in order, are as follows: agricultural development level, latitude, population size, longitude, animal husbandry development level, economic scale, time trend and industrialization level. In this study, via SHAP interaction plots, we found that the effects of population, economic growth, and industrialization on terrestrial NPP are regionally heterogeneous; via cluster analysis, we found the stage characteristics of the mode of SED affecting terrestrial NPP. Therefore, the conservation of terrestrial NPP needs to be combined with the stage changes of SED, as well as inter-regional differences, to develop a regionally coordinated and time-coherent ecological carbon sink conservation plan.

Short-Term Evaluation of the Spatial Distribution of Trophic Groups of Amoebae in the Rhizosphere of Zea mays Inoculated with Rhizophagus intraradices.

Primary production in terrestrial ecosystems is sustained by plants, microbiota, and fungi, which are the major organic matter providers in the root zone, setting in motion the soil food webs. Predators like soil amoebae voraciously feed on bacteria, fungi, and microbial eukaryotes releasing the nutrients sequestered in their biomass. Early food web setting up is crucial for seedling nutrition and its further development after establishment. Mycorrhizal fungi are more than phosphorus providers, and we wonder what their role is in structuring the predators' trophic groups in the root zone. We evaluated the effect of Rhizophagus intraradices inoculated in Zea mays (mycorrhizosphere), on the structuration of amoebae trophic groups along vertical and horizontal (3, 6, and 9cm) soil distribution when compared to un-inoculated plants, after 20days in microcosms. Amoebae species richness was highest in non-mycorrhizal seedlings in the root zone at 6- to 9-cm depth, and 3cm away from plants. More bacterial species are needed when plants are devoid of mycorrhiza, and their influence is constrained 3cm away from roots. Higher diversity of trophic groups was recorded at mycorrhizal seedlings and at the compartment influenced by the mycelium at 6- to 9-cm depth. The highest bacterivorous diversity, higher number of rare species and protozoa-eating amoebae, and the absence of fungivorous group recorded at the mycorrhizosphere of Z. mays, indicate that the community was very different from the non-mycorrhizal plants. We conclude that the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus exerts significant changes on the community of trophic groups of amoebae.

Hydrothermal conditions determine soil potential net N mineralization rates in arid and semi‐arid grasslands

Abstract Soil net nitrogen (N) mineralization is a key biogeochemical process influencing plant available N and net primary productivity in terrestrial ecosystems. However, the spatial variations and controlling factors of soil net N mineralization (RPNM) in arid and semi‐arid grasslands are less studied and unclear. In this study, we investigated the soil RPNM by performing a laboratory incubation experiment. Soil samples were collected from 30 sites in three east–west transects on the Inner Mongolia Plateau (MP), Loess Plateau (LP) and Tibetan Plateau (TP) along a 3200 km arid and semi‐arid grassland gradient, with each transect containing three different grassland types (meadow steppe [MS], typical steppe [TS] and desert steppe [DS], respectively). Results showed that the average RPNM values ranged from −0.37 to 1.29 mg N kg−1 day−1, with a significantly lower RPNM found in the DS (0.08 ± 0.01 mg N kg−1 day−1) compared with those in the MS (0.30 ± 0.03 mg N kg−1 day−1) and in the TS (0.33 ± 0.03 mg N kg−1 day−1) in the MP and LP transects (p &lt; 0.05). This difference could be explained by variations in climatic and soil factors, such as hydrothermal index (HT), the soil pH, soil organic matter (SOM) and precipitation. However, no significant differences in RPNM were found among different grassland types in the TP transect, possibly due to the similarly low microbial activity, as indicated by the microbial biomass carbon values. Across all three grassland transects, HT, SOM and microbial variables were the major factors controlling RPNM, which together explained 20.7% of the variation in RPNM. Further structural equation model analysis indicated HT was an integral predictor of RPNM, directly or indirectly via SOM, under different conditions of precipitation and temperature. Our findings provide field evidence and parameters for biogeochemical cycling to better predict future N transformation processes under changing precipitation and temperature regimes across a wide range of arid and semi‐arid grassland ecosystems. Decoupling of greenness and gross primary productivity as aridity decreases

Ecosystem primary productivity is a key ecological process influencing many ecosystem services, including carbon storage. Thus, clarifying how primary productivity in terrestrial ecosystems responds to climatic variability can reveal key mechanisms that will drive future changes in the global carbon budget. Satellite products of canopy greenness are widely used as proxies for vegetation productivity to evaluate how ecosystems respond to climate variability. However, to what degree inter-annual variations in productivity are consistent with greenness and how this relationship varies spatially remains unclear. Here we investigated the strength of the coupling between inter-annual variations in leaf area index (LAI, a measure of greenness) and ecosystem gross primary productivity (GPP) derived from eddy covariance towers, i.e., the r2 of the LAI-GPP relationship. Overall, inter-annual GPP and LAI were highly coupled (i.e., high r2) in arid grasslands, but were fully decoupled in mesic evergreen broadleaf forests, indicating that this relationship varies strongly along aridity gradients. A possible mechanism of the spatial variation in the LAI-GPP relationship is that the tradeoff between ecosystem structure (LAI) and physiology (photosynthesis per unit leaf area) becomes stronger in more humid climates. Land models overestimated the r2 of LAI-GPP correlation for most ecosystem types and failed to capture the spatial pattern along aridity gradients. We conclude that relying on greenness products for evaluating inter-annual changes in vegetation productivity may bias assessments, especially in tropical rainforest ecosystems. Our findings may also reconcile observed disparities between responses in greenness and GPP during drought in Amazon forests.

Biocrusts increase the resistance to warming-induced increases in topsoil P pools.

Ongoing global warming and alterations in rainfall patterns driven by climate change are known to have large impacts on biogeochemical cycles, particularly on drylands. In addition, the global increase in atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition can destabilize primary productivity in terrestrial ecosystems, and phosphorus (P) may become the most limiting nutrient in many terrestrial ecosystems. However, the impacts of climate change on soil P pools in drylands remain poorly understood. Furthermore, it is unknown whether biocrusts, a major biotic component of drylands worldwide, modulate such impacts.Here we used two long‐term (8–10 years) experiments conducted in Central (Aranjuez) and SE (Sorbas) Spain to test how a ~2.5°C warming, a ~30% rainfall reduction and biocrust cover affected topsoil (0–1 cm) P pools (non‐occluded P, organic P, calcium bound P, occluded P and total P).Warming significantly increased most P pools—except occluded P—in Aranjuez, whereas only augmented non‐occluded P in Sorbas. The rainfall reduction treatment had no effect on the soil P pools at any experimental site. Biocrusts increased most soil P pools and conferred resistance to simulated warming for major P pools at both sites, and to rainfall reduction for non‐occluded and occluded P in Aranjuez. Synthesis. Our findings provide novel insights on the responses of soil P pools to warming and rainfall reduction, and highlight the importance of biocrusts as modulators of these responses in dryland ecosystems. Our results suggest that the observed negative impacts of warming on dryland biocrust communities will decrease their capacity to buffer changes in topsoil P driven by climate change.

Divergent responses of terrestrial carbon use efficiency to climate variation from 2000 to 2018

Carbon use efficiency (CUE) refers to the allocation of photosynthesized products by plants and is commonly used to measure primary production in terrestrial ecosystems. Despite the fact that the effects of climate variation on vegetation CUE have been studied at various spatial scales, there is still a lack of consensus as to how vegetation CUE responds to climate factors. The objective of this study was to evaluate the spatiotemporal dynamics of terrestrial CUE based on the latest versions of Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) products during 2000–2018, and to reveal the dominant climate factor that controls vegetation CUE in different regions by using path analysis (PA). The results showed that global vegetation CUE increased significantly due to a more rapid increase in net primary productivity (NPP) than in gross primary productivity (GPP) over this period. Central Africa and South America are the two areas that experienced clear increases in CUE, and Amazon and northeastern India experienced decreases in vegetation CUE due to reduced precipitation. CUE increased significantly in the north frigid, the torrid, and the south temperate zones over this period. The largest areas showing vegetation CUE increases and decreases occurred in the north temperate zone. Rising precipitation lowered the vegetation CUE in the north frigid zone, but promoted CUE increase in the torrid and south temperate zones. Higher temperatures led to higher CUE in the north frigid and south temperate zones. Reduced CUE due to higher temperature mostly occurred in the arid zones. CUE in the cold/boreal zone remained relatively stable due to the synchronized variation of GPP and NPP. The divergent responses of terrestrial CUE to climate variations call for flexible ecosystem management to adapt to the future warming climate in different regions. The results also highlighted that a dynamic parameterization scheme of vegetation carbon allocation should be considered in simulating the terrestrial C cycle in Earth System Models.

Increasing Causal Effects of El Niño–Southern Oscillation on the Future Carbon Cycle of Terrestrial Ecosystems

AbstractHere we examine the causal effects of El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on the global carbon cycle over historical and future periods utilizing datasets from the Coupled Modeling Intercomparison Project Phase 6 models. Our results show that ENSO exhibits impact on terrestrial carbon fluxes and carbon storage over numerous regions of Asia, Oceania, and America. High consensus is found between models for the influences of ENSO over these regions. The results demonstrate that the effects of ENSO on carbon cycling over subtropics and high‐latitude regions may be more significant than previously understood. In historical simulation, the regions affected by ENSO account for approximately 8.5% land‐area and this proportion rises to approximately 11.7% in the future simulation, indicating an increase in ENSO influences on the gross primary productivity of terrestrial ecosystems. In addition, the results emphasize stronger response of seasonal carbon stocks to ENSO compared to that of seasonal carbon fluxes.

Soil moisture, temperature and nitrogen availability interactively regulate carbon exchange in a meadow steppe ecosystem

Primary productivity in terrestrial ecosystems can be significantly altered by the predicted increases in nitrogen (N) deposition, but it is still unclear how N deposition influences the carbon (C) exchange processes especially in dryland ecosystems. In this study, a 3-year experiment with two types of fertilizers and five N addition levels was conducted in a semiarid steppe of Erguna, Inner Mongolia to assess the effects of exogenous N input on net ecosystem productivity (NEP), gross ecosystem productivity (GEP) and ecosystem respiration (ER). Our results showed that enhanced N input significantly increased NEP and GEP when the volumetric soil water content (VWC) was greater than 15% (v/v%), but had trivial and inconsistent effects when VWC was less than that threshold. Moreover, the NEP and GEP increased significantly with increasing N addition but leveled off when the N input reached 10 g N m–2 year–1 and the VWC was above 15%. However, the ER showed a significant increase with N addition rates, regardless of soil water content. Our main findings are as follows. First, the ecosystem C exchange can be significantly enhanced by addition of N only when soil moisture exceeds certain threshold, suggesting co-limitation of water and N in the grassland ecosystem that we studied. Second, in addition to concurrent consideration of water, temperature and N as well as their interactions also need to be accounted for. Third, the frequency of days with the VWC being higher than 15% accounted only around one third of days during the three growing seasons. Taken together, our findings imply that the expected increases of carbon sequestration should be minimal under N deposition in the Inner Mongolia grassland ecosystems.

Foliar nutrient allocation patterns in Banksia attenuata and Banksia sessilis differing in growth rate and adaptation to low-phosphorus habitats.

Phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) are essential nutrients that frequently limit primary productivity in terrestrial ecosystems. Efficient use of these nutrients is important for plants growing in nutrient-poor environments. Plants generally reduce foliar P concentration in response to low soil P availability. We aimed to assess ecophysiological mechanisms and adaptive strategies for efficient use of P in Banksia attenuata (Proteaceae), naturally occurring on deep sand, and B. sessilis, occurring on shallow sand over laterite or limestone, by comparing the allocation of P among foliar P fractions. We carried out pot experiments with slow-growing B. attenuata, which resprouts after fire, and faster growing opportunistic B. sessilis, which is killed by fire, on substrates with different P availability using a randomized complete block design. We measured leaf P and N concentrations, photosynthesis, leaf mass per area, relative growth rate and P allocated to major biochemical fractions in B. attenuata and B. sessilis. The two species had similarly low foliar total P concentrations, but distinct patterns of P allocation to P-containing fractions. The foliar total N concentration of B. sessilis was greater than that of B. attenuata on all substrates. The foliar total P and N concentrations in both species decreased with decreasing P availability. The relative growth rate of both species was positively correlated with concentrations of both foliar nucleic acid P and total N, but there was no correlation with other P fractions. Faster growing B. sessilis allocated more P to nucleic acids than B. attenuata did, but other fractions were similar. The nutrient allocation patterns in faster growing opportunistic B. sessilis and slower growing B. attenuata revealed different strategies in response to soil P availability which matched their contrasting growth strategy.

Ecto- and endoparasitic nematodes respond differently across sites to changes in precipitation.

Plant parasitic nematodes are among the greatest consumers of primary production in terrestrial ecosystems. Their feeding strategies can be divided into endoparasites and ectoparasites that differ substantially, not only in their damage potential to host tissue and primary production, but also in their susceptibility to environmental changes. Climate change is predicted to increase variability of precipitation in many systems, yet the effects on belowground biodiversity and associated impacts on primary productivity remain poorly understood. To examine the impact of altered precipitation on endo- and ectoparasitic soil nematodes, we conducted a 2-year precipitation manipulation study across an arid, a semiarid, and a mesic grassland. Plant parasite feeding type abundance, functional guilds, and herbivory index in response to precipitation were evaluated. Responses of endo- and ectoparasites to increased precipitation varied by grassland type. There was little response of ectoparasites to increased precipitation although their population declined at the mesic site with increased precipitation. The abundance of endoparasites remained unchanged with increasing precipitation at the arid site, increased at the semiarid, and decreased at the mesic site. The herbivory index followed closely the trends seen in the endoparasites response by stagnating at the arid site, increasing at the semiarid, and decreasing at the mesic site. Our findings suggest that altered precipitation has differing effects on plant parasite feeding strategies as well as functional guilds. This may have important implications for grassland productivity, as plant parasite pressure may exacerbate the effects of climate change on host plants.

Combined MODIS land surface temperature and greenness data for modeling vegetation phenology, physiology, and gross primary production in terrestrial ecosystems

Vegetation phenology such as the start (SOS) and end (EOS) of the growing season, physiology (represented by seasonal maximum capacity of carbon uptake, GPPmax), and gross primary production (GPP) are sensitive indicators for monitoring ecosystem response to environmental change. However, uncertainty and disagreement between models limit the use phenology metrics and GPP derived from remote sensing data. Statistical models for estimating phenology and physiology were constructed based on key predictor variables derived from enhanced vegetation index (EVI) and land surface temperature (LST) data. Then, a statistical model that integrated remote sensing-based phenology and physiology (RS-SMIPP) data was constructed to estimate seasonal and annual GPP. These models were calibrated and validated with GPP observations from 512 site-years of FLUXNET data covering four plant functional types (PFTs) in the northern hemisphere: deciduous broadleaf forest, evergreen needle-leaf forest, mixed forest, and grassland. Our results showed that phenology and physiology were accurately estimated with relative root mean squared error (RMSEr) <20%, and the errors varied among the PFTs. Spring EVI was an important factor in explaining variation of GPPmax. The RS-SMIPP model outperformed the MOD17 algorithm in accurately estimating seasonal and annual GPP and reduced RMSEr from 25.34%–43.44% to 9.53%–26.19% for annual GPP of the different PFTs. These findings demonstrate that remote sensing-based phenological and physiological indicators could be used to explain the variations of seasonal and annual GPP, and provide an efficient way for improving GPP estimations at a global scale.

Synergies between mycorrhizal fungi and soil microbial communities increase plant nitrogen acquisition

Nitrogen availability often restricts primary productivity in terrestrial ecosystems. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi are ubiquitous symbionts of terrestrial plants and can improve plant nitrogen acquisition, but have a limited ability to access organic nitrogen. Although other soil biota mineralize organic nitrogen into bioavailable forms, they may simultaneously compete for nitrogen, with unknown consequences for plant nutrition. Here, we show that synergies between the mycorrhizal fungus Rhizophagus irregularis and soil microbial communities have a highly non-additive effect on nitrogen acquisition by the model grass Brachypodium distachyon. These multipartite microbial synergies result in a doubling of the nitrogen that mycorrhizal plants acquire from organic matter and a tenfold increase in nitrogen acquisition compared to non-mycorrhizal plants grown in the absence of soil microbial communities. This previously unquantified multipartite relationship may contribute to more than 70 Tg of annually assimilated plant nitrogen, thereby playing a critical role in global nutrient cycling and ecosystem function.

Silicon increases the phosphorus availability of Arctic soils

Phosphorus availability in soils is an important parameter influencing primary production in terrestrial ecosystems. Phosphorus limitation exists in many soils since a high proportion of soil phosphorus is stored in unavailable forms for plants, such as bound to iron minerals or stabilized organic matter. This is in spite of soils having a high amount of total soil phosphorus. The feasibility of silicon to mobilize phosphorus from strong binding sites of iron minerals has been shown for marine sediments but is less well studied in soils. Here we tested the effect of silicon on phosphorus mobilization for 143 Artic soils (representing contrasting soil characteristics), which have not been affected by agriculture or other anthropogenic management practices. In agreement with marine studies, silicon availabilities were significantly positive correlated to phosphorus mobilization in these soils. Laboratory experiments confirmed that silicon addition significantly increases phosphorus mobilization, by mobilizing Fe(II)-P phases from mineral surfaces. Silicon addition increased also soil respiration in phosphorus deficient soils. We conclude that silicon is a key component regulating mobilization of phosphorous in Arctic soils, suggesting that this may also be important for sustainable management of phosphorus availability in soils in general.

Long-term Nutrient Fertilization Increased Soil Carbon Storage in California Grasslands

Elevated nutrient deposition often increases primary productivity in terrestrial ecosystems and thus has the potential to increase the flux of carbon (C) into soils. An important step toward greater understanding of nutrient effects on C storage involves assessing effects on different fractions of the soil C pool across a range of soil types. We quantified the combined effects of 8 years of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), and micronutrient fertilization on the C storage in bulk soil and in density fractions at four grassland sites in California. When averaged across sites, fertilization increased soil light fraction C by 64% relative to the control in the 0–10 cm depth. The increase in light fraction C likely resulted from the fertilization-induced increase in plant C input to soil, as aboveground net primary productivity also consistently increased with fertilization across sites. Effects of fertilization on heavy fraction C were highly site specific, having positive, negative, or no effect at individual sites. The response of heavy fraction C to fertilization appeared to be related to mean annual precipitation and soil bulk density. Overall, bulk soil C concentration showed a marginally significant increase of 6% with fertilization when averaged across sites (P = 0.07). Our results indicate that biomass production and soil light fraction are generally sensitive to fertilization across grasslands in California, likely contributing to increases in soil C storage. Responses of heavy fraction C, on the other hand, vary greatly among sites and may depend on climate and soil characteristics.
