Effect of Penicillin on Hematological and Plasma Biochemical Parameters in Female Wistar Rats

An antibiotic is a type of antimicrobial substance active against bacteria. It is the most important type of antibacterial agent for fighting bacterial infections, and antibiotic medications are widely used in the treatment and prevention of such infections. This study was designed to investigate effect of penicillin on blood parameters in female rats. Ten female Wistar rats (130 – 150 g) were grouped into control and penicillin (17.14 mg/kg) – treated groups for blood assay. The penicillin was administered orally for 50 days. Haematological assay was carried out using haemocytometer, while biochemical assay was carried out using spectrophotometry. Mean +/- SEM and student’s t-test at p<0.05 were determined. Penicillin (17.14 mg/kg) significantly decreased haemoglobin and lymphocyte values, but induced significant increase in eosinophil value relative to their controls. It also significantly decreased total protein and ALP values relative to their controls. Conclusively, it can be suggested that penicillin had harmful effects on blood parameters in female Wistar rats via induction of significant reductions in hemoglobin, lymphocyte and total protein values. However, it also had advantageous effects on blood parameters in female Wistar rats via induction of significant increase in eosinophil value as well as significant decrease in ALP activity.

Antimycotic effect of 3-phenyllactic acid produced by probiotic bacterial isolates against Covid-19 associated mucormycosis causing fungi.

The Covid-19 associated mucormycosis (CAM) is an emerging disease affecting immunocompromised patients. Prevention of such infections using probiotics and their metabolites persist as effective therapeutic agents. Therefore, the present study emphasizes on assessment of their efficacy and safety. Samples from different sources like human milk, honey bee intestine, toddy, and dairy milk were collected, screened and characterized for potential probiotic lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and their metabolites to be used as effective antimicrobial agents to curtail CAM. Three isolates were selected based on probiotic properties and characterized as Lactobacillus pentosus BMOBR013, Lactobacillus pentosus BMOBR061 and Pediococcus acidilactici BMOBR041 by 16S rRNA sequencing and MALDI TOF-MS. The antimicrobial activity against standard bacterial pathogens showed ˃9 mm zone of inhibition. Furthermore, the antifungal activity of three isolates was tested against Aspergillus flavus MTCC 2788, Fusarium oxysporum, Candida albicans and Candida tropicalis where the results showed significant inhibition of each fungal strain. Further studies were carried out on lethal fungal pathogens like Rhizopus sp. and two Mucor sp. which are associated with post Covid-19 infection in immunosuppressed diabetic patients. Our studies on CAM inhibitory effect of LAB revealed the efficient inhibition against Rhizopus sp. and two Mucor sp. The cell free supernatants of three LAB showed varied inhibitory activity against these fungi. Following the antimicrobial activity, the antagonistic metabolite 3-Phenyllactic acid (PLA) in culture supernatant was quantified and characterized by HPLC and LC-MS using standard PLA (Sigma Aldrich). The isolate L. pentosus BMOBR013 produced highest PLA (0.441 g/L), followed by P. acidilactici BMOBR041 (0.294 g/L) and L. pentosus BMOBR061 (0.165 g/L). The minimum inhibitory concentration of HPLC eluted PLA on the Rhizopus sp. and two Mucor sp. was found to be 180 mg/ml which was further confirmed by inhibition of total mycelia under live cell imaging microscope.

A limited number of antibiotics also possess antiprotozoal activity.[3][4] Antibiotics are not effective against viruses such as the common cold or influenza;[5] drugs which inhibit viruses are termed antiviral drugs or antivirals rather than antibiotics.

Types, Causes and Complication Rates of Surgical Site Infection Post Maxillofacial Surgery

Surgical site infection is a common post-operative complication that is encountered by surgeons and is associated with notable morbidity and mortality. Oral cavity due to the presence of bacteria is more prone to infection and diseases. Even performance under complete sterilization cannot prevent the infection in oral surgeries and the prevalence of infection rate accounts to approximately 10%-15%. Post-operatively oral and maxillofacial surgeries have increased chances of infection due to bacterial load and access to incision site during healing time. The purpose of this research is to review the available information about the types, causes and complication rates of surgical site infection post maxillofacial surgery. Various procedure and patient related factors in oral and maxillofacial surgery contribute to surgical site infections. Procedure's duration and invasiveness as well as bone equipment, biomaterial use, surgical technique, and sterilization practices are some of determinants of surgical site infection. Cellulitis, abscess, maxillary sinusitis, and osteomyelitis are all common postoperative infections. Surgical site infections often result in requirement of additional treatment procedures, prolongs the hospital stay and also negatively affects health of the patient. Efficient interventions by the oral and maxillofacial surgery teams can play a vital role in prevention of such infections. Although surgical site infection is an area of concern for oral and maxillofacial surgeons’ literature on this aspect is quite scarce and very limited studies are available. In future, more clinical and comprehensive research can be beneficial.

The prospects of antimicrobial coated medical implants.

The implants are increasingly being a part of modern medicine in various surgical procedures for functional or cosmetic purposes. The progressive use of implants is associated with increased infectious complications and prevention of such infections always remains precedence in the clinical settings. The preventive approaches include the systemic administration of antimicrobial agents before and after the surgical procedures as well as the local application of antibiotics. The relevant literature and existing clinical practices have highlighted the role of antimicrobial coating approaches in the prevention of implants associated infections, although the applications of these strategies are not yet standardized, and the clinical efficacy is not much clear. The adequate data from the randomized control trials is challenging because of the unavailability of a large sample size although it is compulsory in this context to assess the clinical efficacy of preemptive practices. This review compares the efficacy of preventive approaches and the prospects of antimicrobial-coated implants in preventing implant-related infections.

Effects of a Quality Improvement Program to Reduce Central Venous Catheter-Related Infections in Hemodialysis Patients

BackgroundCentral catheter infections are of concern in patients on hemodialysis because of the high risk of catheter-related bloodstream infections, sepsis, and death. Adequate nursing is critical for the prevention of such infections. This study aimed to use the PDCA (plan-do-check-act) method to reduce the incidence of central venous catheter infection using management in the maintenance of central venous catheter in patients on hemodialysis, compared with routine care. MethodsThis pilot study recruited patients on hemodialysis via central venous catheterization at the Blood Purification Center of Ruijin Hospital between November 2017 and November 2018. The patients were randomized to the routine and PDCA groups. All participants received routine nursing. The PDCA group received central venous catheter management by PDCA. The incidence of central venous catheterization-related infections, nursing satisfaction, and quality of life were compared between the two groups. ResultsA total of 122 participants were enrolled in each group. The incidence of central catheter-related bloodstream infection, as the primary outcome, was 0.8 and 8.8 cases per 1000 catheter days in the PDCA and routine groups, respectively (P < 0.001). In addition, as the secondary outcomes, the scores of nursing satisfaction (health guidance, nursing technology, and therapeutic effects) score and quality of life (physiological, psychological, social, and environmental status) were better in the PDCA group than in the routine group (all P < 0.01). ConclusionsThis pilot study suggests that the PDCA cycle model can effectively reduce the incidence of central venous catheter-related infections and improve satisfaction and quality of life in patients on hemodialysis.

A Systematic Review of Studies Reporting Antibiotic Pharmacokinetic Data in the Cerebrospinal Fluid of Critically Ill Patients with Uninflamed Meninges.

Ventriculostomy-associated infections in critically ill patients remain therapeutically challenging because of drug- and disease-related factors that contribute to suboptimal antibiotic concentrations in cerebrospinal fluid. Optimal antibiotic dosing for the treatment and prevention of such infections should be based on robust and contextually specific pharmacokinetic data. The objects of this study were to describe and critically appraise studies with reported antibiotic concentrations or pharmacokinetic data in cerebrospinal fluid of critically ill patients without meningeal inflammation. We systematically reviewed the literature to identify published reports and studies describing antibiotic concentrations, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics in cerebrospinal fluid of critically ill patients with uninflamed meninges. Fifty-eight articles met the inclusion criteria. There was significant heterogeneity in methodologies and results. When available, antibiotic pharmacokinetic parameters displayed large intersubject variability. Intraventricular dosing achieved substantially higher antibiotic concentrations in cerebrospinal fluid than did intravenous doses. Few studies conducted a robust pharmacokinetic analysis and described relevant clinical pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic indices and exposure targets in cerebrospinal fluid. Robust and clinically relevant antibiotic pharmacokinetic data describing antibiotic disposition in cerebrospinal fluid are necessary. Such studies should use a standardized approach to accurately describe pharmacokinetic variability. These data should ideally be tied to clinical outcomes whereby therapeutic targets in the cerebrospinal fluid can be better defined. Altered dosing strategies, in conjunction with exploring the utility of therapeutic drug monitoring, can then be developed to optimize antibiotic exposure with the goal of improving outcomes in this difficult-to-treat patient group.

The potential of Aeromonas spp. from wildlife as antimicrobial resistance indicators in aquatic environments

Worldwide emergence of bacterial strains resistant to multiple classes of antimicrobials and the increase incidence of infections caused by bacteria resistant to last-resource antibiotics is now a common problematic and likely to increase in coming years. Surveillance of important resistant clones and associated mobile genetic elements is essential for decision-making in terms of mitigation measures to be applied for the prevention of such infections. However, the role of natural environments, and especially aquatic ecosystems that display optimal grounds for antimicrobial resistance (AMR) development and dissemination, as important components of the AMR cycle has been disregarded until recent years. It is now widely accepted that resistant strains and resistance determinants are disseminated in the aquatic environment and that resistance profiles are mainly shaped by anthropogenic environmental contamination. In light of the One Health concept, developing strategies for the monitoring of AMR prevalence and dissemination and unraveling critical points of action are required. Therefore, bacterial indicators and targeted vectors assume special importance in surveillance schemes. Aeromonas spp., a ubiquitous bacterial genus with importance as human, animal and food pathogens, are common in aquatic environments. Environmental isolates belonging to this genus often display acquired resistance determinants and their use as indicators to survey water quality and sewage pollution has been accepted. Wild animal species are also of highly importance in this context. They constitute potential AMR reservoirs in natural environments, as they actively participate in the dissemination of resistant bacteria and resistance determinants across habitats. Characterizing Aeromonas spp. retrieved from wildlife represents a potential aid for surveillance programs aiming at unraveling the intricate mechanisms of AMR evolution and dispersal in natural aquatic environments, as well as understanding possible consequences for human and animal health.

The Microbiological Analysis of a Rhizobium radiobacter Outbreak After Intravitreal Injection

Rhizobium radiobacter, which is found in nature and causes tumorigenic plant diseases can lead to opportunistic infections, especially in people with underlying diseases. In our study, endophthalmitis that observed in ten patients caused by R.radiobacter bacteria after intravitreal ranibizumab injection in Ophthalmology Clinic were examined microbiologically. Vitreous fluid samples of 13 patients who received intravitreal ranibizumab injection were sent to the Microbiology Laboratory from Van Yuzuncu Yil University Faculty of Medicine's Ophthalmology Clinic for microbiological examination in December 21, 2016. Samples were examined under microscope after staining with Gram and cultured with 5% sheep blood agar and Eosin Methylene Blue (EMB) agar. The culture plates were incubated for 18-24 hours at 37°C in 5% CO2. At the end of this period, catalase, oxidase, and urease tests were performed on the colonies. The identification and antibiotic susceptibility tests of microorganisms growing in vitreous fluid samples were performed using BD Phoenix (Becton Dickinson, USA), Vitek 2 Compact (BioMerieux, France), and Vitek MS (BioMerieux, France) systems. In addition, 16S rDNA sequence analysis was performed and the pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) method was used to determine the clonal relationship between the isolates. After growing in cultures (one day after the procedure), culture samples were collected from the objects, medical tools and equipment, hands of healthcare staff and a new injection solution in the area where the procedure was performed. R.radiobacter was isolated in 10 of the vitreous fluid samples of 13 patients, and no bacterial growth was detected in 3. The microorganisms were found to be gram-negative bacilli, non-fermenter, motile, catalase/oxidase/urease positive, in compliance with R.radiobacter. All isolates were identified as R.radiobacter by BD Phoenix (Becton Dickinson, USA), Vitek 2 Compact (BioMerieux, France), and Vitek MS (BioMerieux, France) (database v2.0) systems. R.radiobacter isolates were found to be resistant to ampicillin, amoxicillin/clavulanate, trimethoprim/ sulfamethoxazole, cefotaxime and ceftazidime; susceptible to cefuroxime, cefepime, amikacin, gentamicin, imipenem, meropenem, ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin and piperacillin/tazobactam. The isolates were identified as R.radiobacter by 16S rDNA sequence analysis. PFGE showed that all isolates had the same band profile. R.radiobacter isolates with the same band profile likely revealed that the contamination was from the same source. However, the growth of R.radiobacter was not detected in the cultures made from the objects, medical instruments and supplies, the hands of healthcare professionals and the new injection solution in the area where the procedure was performed, and the source of the agent could not be determined. The results have shown that intravitreal injection procedure carries a risk for R.radiobacter infection. Disinfection and antisepsis conditions, before and during the procedure, is important for the prevention of such infections. This study is the first epidemic outbreak report of endophthalmitis caused by the same strain of R.radiobacter and the second article in which R.radiobacter was reported as the cause of endophthalmitis after intravitreal injection.

Normothermic and hypothermic oxygenated perfusion for donation after circulatory death in kidney transplantation: do we pay higher risk of severe infection after transplantation?: a case report

BackgroundNormothermic and hypothermic oxygenated perfusion for donation after circulatory death in kidney transplantation are becoming popular in Italy, with the purpose of reducing the risk of primary non function and delayed graft function due to the prolonged warm ischemia time.Potential complications related to these procedures are currently under investigation and are continuously emerging with the increasing experience. Post-operative infections - in particular graft arteritis - are a rare complication but determine high risk of mortality and of graft loss.The acute onset of the arterial complications makes it very difficult to find an effective treatment, and early diagnosis is crucial for saving both patient and graft. Prevention of such infections in this particular setting are advisable.Case presentationWe present a patient with an acute arterial rupture after transplantation of a DCD graft treated in-vivo hypothermic oxygenated perfusion. The cause was a severe arteritis of the renal artery caused by Candida krusei and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. We discussed our treatment and we compared it to the other reported series.ConclusionFungal infections in DCD transplant may be treacherous and strategies to prevent them should be advocated.

Three-Dimensional, Bifunctional Microstructured Polymer Hydrogels Made from Polyzwitterions and Antimicrobial Polymers.

Biofilm-associated infections of medical devices are a global problem. For the prevention of such infections, biomaterial surfaces are chemically or topographically modified to slow down the initial stages of biofilm formation. In the bifunctional material here presented, chemical and topographical cues are combined, so that protein and bacterial adhesion as well as bacterial proliferation are effectively inhibited. Upon changes in the surface topography parameters and investigation of the effect of these changes on bioactivity, structure-property relationships are obtained. The target material is obtained by microcontact printing (μCP), a soft lithography method. The antimicrobial component, poly(oxanorbornene)-based synthetic mimics of an antimicrobial peptide (SMAMP), was printed onto a protein-repellent polysulfobetaine hydrogel, so that bifunctional 3D structured polymer surfaces with 1, 2, and 8.5 μm spacing are obtained. These surfaces are characterized with fluorescence microscopy, surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and contact angle measurements. Biological studies show that the bifunctional surfaces with 1 and 2 μm spacing are 100% antimicrobially active against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, 100% fibrinogen-repellent, and nontoxic to human gingival mucosal keratinocytes. At 8.5 μm spacing, the broad-band antimicrobial activity and the protein repellency are compromised, which indicates that this spacing is above the upper limit for effective simultaneous antimicrobial activity and protein repellency of polyzwitterionic-polycationic materials.

Changes in Prevalence of Health Care–Associated Infections in U.S. Hospitals

BackgroundA point-prevalence survey that was conducted in the United States in 2011 showed that 4% of hospitalized patients had a health care–associated infection. We repeated the survey in 2015 to assess changes in the prevalence of health care–associated infections during a period of national attention to the prevention of such infections.MethodsAt Emerging Infections Program sites in 10 states, we recruited up to 25 hospitals in each site area, prioritizing hospitals that had participated in the 2011 survey. Each hospital selected 1 day on which a random sample of patients was identified for assessment. Trained staff reviewed medical records using the 2011 definitions of health care–associated infections. We compared the percentages of patients with health care–associated infections and performed multivariable log-binomial regression modeling to evaluate the association of survey year with the risk of health care–associated infections.ResultsIn 2015, a total of 12,299 patients in 199 hospitals were surveyed, as compared with 11,282 patients in 183 hospitals in 2011. Fewer patients had health care–associated infections in 2015 (394 patients [3.2%; 95% confidence interval {CI}, 2.9 to 3.5]) than in 2011 (452 [4.0%; 95% CI, 3.7 to 4.4]) (P<0.001), largely owing to reductions in the prevalence of surgical-site and urinary tract infections. Pneumonia, gastrointestinal infections (most of which were due to Clostridium difficile [now Clostridioides difficile]), and surgical-site infections were the most common health care–associated infections. Patients’ risk of having a health care–associated infection was 16% lower in 2015 than in 2011 (risk ratio, 0.84; 95% CI, 0.74 to 0.95; P=0.005), after adjustment for age, presence of devices, days from admission to survey, and status of being in a large hospital.ConclusionsThe prevalence of health care–associated infections was lower in 2015 than in 2011. To continue to make progress in the prevention of such infections, prevention strategies against C. difficile infection and pneumonia should be augmented. Incidence of and associated factors for bacterial colonization of intravenous catheters removed from dogs in response to clinical complications.

BackgroundInfection rate associated with intravenous (IV) catheter placement is emerging as an important issue in small animal veterinary medicine, mostly because of the economic costs associated with these infections. Identification of possible associated factors may provide useful information for the surveillance and prevention of such infections.ObjectivesTo determine the incidence of positive bacterial cultures obtained from IV catheters used in dogs hospitalized for at least 48 hours and removed because of clinical complication. To identify the bacteria involved and factors associated with bacterial colonization.AnimalsOne‐hundred eighty‐two dogs that underwent IV catheterization from January 2015 to July 2015 at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of Alfonso X el Sabio University of Madrid were enrolled in the study.ResultsThe bacterial colonization rate of all IV catheters removed in response to clinical complications was 39.6%, the cumulative proportion of catheters that remained in place at 24, 48, and 72 hours after placement was 89.5, 78, and 59.4%, respectively. Multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression indicated significant associations for staff who performed catheterization (junior, P = .002; student, P = .034) and use of steroidal anti‐inflammatory drugs (P = .036). The most frequently isolated bacterium was Acinetobacter spp. (21.7%).Conclusions and Clinical ImportanceThe bacterial colonization incidence related to IV catheter placement was slightly higher than the incidence described in other veterinary studies. Associated factors not previously described in veterinary medicine were found. The most frequently isolated organism was Acinetobacter spp., indicating its importance as an emerging pathogen in catheter colonization.

Indications have grown, and access to implantation facilities has increased as well. These devices are often lifesaving, and they can be associated with many other benefits. However, as with any medical procedure, complications can occur. In fact, CIED infection is a prevalent complication that can cause high morbidity and can even lead to death. It is important that most clinicians be familiar with signs and symptoms associated with CIED infection as early diagnosis and treatment lead to better outcomes. Nonetheless, the prevention of such infections remains the cornerstone in the management of CIED-related infections. In this paper, we will review in detail the most significant risk factors that can lead to CIED infection. We will also explore the different available tools that can help decrease the incidence of this complication. Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli dual-species biofilms on nanohydroxyapatite loaded with CHX or ZnO nanoparticles.

Implant-associated infections are caused by surface-adhering microorganisms persisting as biofilms, resistant to host defense and antimicrobial agents. Given the limited efficacy of traditional antibiotics, novel strategies may rely on the prevention of such infections through the design of new biomaterials. In this work, two antimicrobial agents applied to nanohydroxyapatite materials-namely, chlorhexidine digluconate (CHX) and zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles-were compared concerning their ability to avoid single- or dual-species biofilms of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The resulting biofilms were quantified by the enumeration of colony-forming units and examined by confocal microscopy using both Live/Dead staining and bacterial-specific fluorescent in situ hybridization. The sessile population arrangement was also observed by scanning electron microscopy. Both biomaterials showed to be effective in impairing bacterial adhesion and proliferation for either single- or dual-species biofilms. Furthermore, a competitive interaction was observed for dual-species biofilms wherein E. coli exhibited higher proliferative capacity than S. aureus, an inverse behavior from the one observed in single-species biofilms. Therefore, either nanoHA-CHX or nanoHA-ZnO surfaces appear as promising alternatives to antibiotics for the prevention of devices-related infections avoiding the critical risk of antibiotic-resistant strains emergence. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Antimicrobial peptide melimine coating for titanium and its in vivo antibacterial activity in rodent subcutaneous infection models

Implant-associated infections represent a significant health problem and financial burden on healthcare systems. Current strategies for the treatment or prevention of such infections are still inadequate and new strategies are needed in this era of antibiotic resistance. Melimine, a synthetic antimicrobial peptide with broad spectrum activity against bacteria, fungi and protozoa, has been shown to be a promising candidate for development as antimicrobial coating for biomedical devices and implants. In this study, the in vitro and in vivo antimicrobial activity of melimine-coated titanium was tested. The titanium surface was amine-functionalised with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) followed by reaction with a bifunctional linker 4-(N-maleimidomethyl)cyclohexane-1-carboxylic 3-sulfo-n-hydroxysuccinimide ester (Sulfo-SMCC) to yield a maleimide functionalised surface. Melimine was then tethered to the surface via a thioether linkage through a Michael addition reaction of the cysteine at its N-terminus with the maleimide moiety. Melimine coating significantly reduced in vitro adhesion and biofilm formation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa by up to 62% and Staphylococcus aureus by up to 84% on the titanium substrates compared to the blank (p < 0.05). The activity was maintained after ethylene oxide gas sterilisation. The coating was also challenged in both mouse and rat subcutaneous infection models and was able to reduce the bacterial load by up to 2 log10 compared to the uncoated surface (p < 0.05). Melimine coating is a promising candidate for development as a surface antimicrobial that can withstand industrial sterilisation while showing good biocompatibility.

Use of a patient hand hygiene protocol to reduce hospital-acquired infections and improve nurses' hand washing.

Critically ill patients are at marked risk of hospital-acquired infections, which increase patients' morbidity and mortality. Registered nurses are the main health care providers of physical care, including hygiene to reduce and prevent hospital-acquired infections, for hospitalized critically ill patients. To investigate a new patient hand hygiene protocol designed to reduce hospital-acquired infection rates and improve nurses' hand-washing compliance in an intensive care unit. A preexperimental study design was used to compare 12-month rates of 2 common hospital-acquired infections, central catheter-associated bloodstream infection and catheter-associated urinary tract infection, and nurses' hand-washing compliance measured before and during use of the protocol. Reductions in 12-month infection rates were reported for both types of infections, but neither reduction was statistically significant. Mean 12-month nurse hand-washing compliance also improved, but not significantly. A hand hygiene protocol for patients in the intensive care unit was associated with reductions in hospital-acquired infections and improvements in nurses' hand-washing compliance. Prevention of such infections requires continuous quality improvement efforts to monitor lasting effectiveness as well as investigation of strategies to eliminate these infections.

The role of probiotics and prebiotics in the prevention of infections in child day-care centres.

Infants and children attending day-care centres demonstrate a notably higher risk of gastrointestinal as well as of respiratory tract infections. The present short review evaluates various well-controlled clinical trials analysing the effect of probiotics and prebiotics in the prevention of such infections. In most of the 12 studies identified, probiotic supplementation was found to be a safe and effective therapeutic tool in preventing gastrointestinal and respiratory infection in this population.

Early Host Tissue Response to Different Types of Vascular Prostheses Coated with Silver Acetate or Vaporized Metallic Silver

In vascular surgery, the infection of prosthetic vascular grafts represents a serious life-threatening complication. Due to the increasing resistance of hospital micro-organisms to standard antibiotic therapies, maximum effort should be put in the primary prevention of such infections. For this purpose, grafts may be coated with different antibacterial silver formulations. In the present study the different effects of silver acetate-coating and vaporized metallic silver-coating on the vascularization and perigraft inflammation during the initial phase after implantation of Intergard Silver (IS) and Silver Graft (SG) were compared. Silver acetate-coated IS and vaporized metallic silver-coated SG were implanted into the dorsal skinfold chamber of C57BL/6 mice (n = 8 per group) to study angiogenesis and leukocyte inflammation at the implantation site by means of repetitive intravital fluorescence microscopy over a 14-day period. At the end of the in vivo experiments, apoptosis and cell proliferation in the newly developed granulation tissue surrounding the implants was analyzed by immunohistochemistry. IS exhibited an improved vascularization, resulting in a significantly higher functional capillary density when compared to SG. Moreover, the leukocyte inflammatory response to IS was less pronounced, as indicated by a reduced number of adherent leukocytes in perigraft venules. This was associated with a higher proliferative activity of the granulation tissue incorporating the IS when compared to SG. The numbers of apoptotic cells in the perigraft tissue were low and did not differ between the two groups. Silver acetate-coated IS exhibits an improved vascularization and reduced perigraft inflammation during the first 14 days after implantation when compared to vaporized metallic silver-coated SG. This may contribute to reducing the risk of early perigraft seroma formation and subsequent infection.

Our recommendations for avoiding exposure to fungi outside the hospital for patients with haematological cancers

Despite several chemotherapeutic and preventative advances, opportunistic fungal infections remain common unintended consequences of cancer treatment. Currently, cancer patients spend most of their time between treatments at home, where they can inadvertently come across potential hazards from environmental and food sources. Therefore, infection prevention measures are of the utmost importance for these patients. Although clinicians closely observe patients throughout their treatment courses in the hospital, the focus of clinical visits is predominantly on cancer care, and clinicians seldom provide recommendations for prevention of such infections. Herein, we provide practical recommendations for busy clinicians to help them educate patients regarding potential sources of fungal infections outside the hospital.
