Patient safety when medication is administered by nursing professionals is a crucial issue in healthcare. Considering the direct and potentially serious impacts of medication errors, it is essential that nursing practice adopts effective strategies to prevent such events. Objective: Describe in detail the step-by-step preparation and administration of intravenous medications, focusing on patient safety and preventing medication errors, following best clinical practices.. Methodology: Description of a routine for the preparation and administration of intravenous medication in a University Hospital in the EBSERH Network, with an emphasis on patient safety in order to minimize possible iatrogenic events. It is observed that the routine can be divided, didactically, into two stages: 1) Analysis of prescription and preparation of the medicine following the 9 right ones; 2) Administration of the medication. Results: Nursing care must be continuous from preparation to administration of the medication, whether intravenous or other routes of administration, always taking into account the period after administration of the medication to identify possible adverse events. When analyzing this experience, the importance of a multidisciplinary perspective and the continuing education of nursing professionals becomes evident. This need extends both to the ethical aspects involved in administering medications and to the technical skills required to ensure patient safety.
