Prevalence of hazardous alcohol consumption and evaluation of associated factors in university students.

The aim of the study was to determine the prevalence of hazardous alcohol consumption (HAC) according to gender among university students and associated factors. This is a cross-sectional study conducted on undergraduate students. We used a stratified sampling technique to represent 26036 students from all grade levels and 11 faculties, and the survey was administered to 2349 undergraduate students. The prevalence of HAC was determined with the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT). HAC was defined as getting 8 points or more from the AUDIT. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to examine HAC related factors in both genders. In this study, 53.2% of the participants were male. The prevalence of HAC in the study group was 13.5% and prevalence of lifetime drinker was 65.3%. In males; those whose fathers [OR = 1.72; 95% CI: (1.17-2.52)], mothers [1.49; (1.02-2.18)], close friends [2.42; (1.28-4.60)] drink alcohol and smoking [3.16; (2.09- 4.77)], use illicit substance [2.35; (1.66-3.34)], have mental health problems [1.65; (1.04-2.62)] were more likely to report HAC. Meanwhile in females, those whose fathers [OR = 1.92; 95%CI: (1.03-3.57)], close friends [5.81; (1.73-19.45)] drink alcohol and smoking [4.33; (2.31-8.15)], use illicit substance [4.34; (2.34-8.06)] have mental health problems [3.01; (1.67-5.43)] were more likely to report HAC. HAC prevalence is high among university students. The risk of HAC increases with the use of alcohol in family and circle of friends, smoking, illicit substance use and mental health problems. The factors associated with the risk of HAC in both genders are similar.

Quantifying patterns of alcohol consumption and its effects on health and wellbeing among BaYaka hunter-gatherers: A mixed-methods cross-sectional study.

Ethnographers frequently allude to alcoholism and related harms in Indigenous hunter-gatherer communities, but very few studies have quantified patterns of alcohol consumption or its health and social impacts. We present a case study of the Mbendjele BaYaka, a Congolese population undergoing socioeconomic transition. 83 adults answered questions about their frequency and quantity of alcohol consumption, underwent biometric measurements and reported whether they were currently experiencing a cough or diarrhoea; 56 participated in structured interviews about their experiences with alcohol. Based on WHO standards, we found 44.3% of the full sample, and 51.5% of drinkers (excluding abstainers), had a hazardous volume of alcohol consumption; and 35.1% of the full sample, and 40.9% of drinkers, engaged in heavy episodic drinking; consumption habits varied with sex and age. Total weekly consumption was a positive predictor of blood pressure and the likelihood of experiencing diarrhoea; associations with other biometric variables were not statistically significant. Interview responses indicated numerous other economic, mental and physical health harms of alcohol use, the prevalence of which demonstrate some variability between forest camps and permanent village settlements. These include high rates of drinking during pregnancy and breastfeeding (~40%); frequent alcohol-induced violence; and considerable exchange of foraged foods and engagement in exploitative labour activities to acquire alcohol or repay associated debts. Our findings demonstrate the prevalence of hazardous alcohol consumption among transitioning hunter-gatherers is higher than other segments of the Congolese population and indicate negative impacts on health and wellbeing, highlighting an urgent need for targeted public health interventions.

Prevalence and risk factors associated with alcohol consumption among indigenous people in Sabah Borneo Island.

In this study, we aimed to determine the prevalence and risk factors of alcohol use among a cohort of population in Sabah. This is a prospective, cohort study involving rural community residents. Rural community resident at Bingkor, Keningau, Sabah. 363 individuals aged 13 years old and above. Community-based participatory research to determine the prevalence and risk factors associated with alcohol use. Measurement of alcohol use using Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) and assessment of psychiatric morbidity using Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) questionnaires. Most alcohol drinkers aged between 36-45 years old, followed by 26-35 years old and 46-55 years old. Interestingly, there are almost similar female to male ratio. Most were Kadazan-Dusun ethnic, non-Muslims, and married. Although only less than a third of the participants received tertiary education, the majority were working. Based on the findings, being a male, non-Muslim and having an obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) (current) posed a significantly higher risk of alcohol consumption. A worryingly high prevalence of hazardous alcohol consumption among the locals is reported. There is a need for population-wide intervention towards preventive measures based on the identified risk factors for hazardous alcohol use.

Correlates of Alcohol-Using Network Size Among Men Who Have Sex with Men in San Francisco, CA.

Men who have sex with men (MSM) have a high prevalence of hazardous alcohol consumption. While network-level characteristics such as social network size have been indicated as upstream determinants of alcohol use in general population samples, no studies have examined factors associated with alcohol using network size (ANS), among MSM.This secondary analysis examined demographic, substance use, and sexual behavior correlates of ANS using data from a diverse sample of alcohol-using MSM in San Francisco (N = 252). Associations were calculated using multivariable negative binomial regression, adjusting for age, race, education, and employment.The median ANS was 10. Factors associated with larger ANS in multivariable analyses included identifying as Hispanic/Latino, having completed a college education or higher, having a higher Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) score, having a greater number of sexual partners, polysubstance use, and being unaware of one’s own HIV status. Factors associated with smaller ANS included being between 18 and 24 years of age, reporting a low income, and having any lifetime history of injection drug use.For MSM, ANS was associated with increased likelihood of hazardous alcohol use, as well specific individual-level substance use and sexual risk behaviors. These results highlight the role of ANS in hazardous alcohol consumption and sexually transmitted infection transmission among MSM. These results also indicate ways that research and intervention programs aimed at reducing alcohol use among MSM might be improved through network-based recruitment or engagement. Finally, these results suggest the need for further research on HIV-unknown MSM.

Alcohol consumption among French physicians: A cross-sectional study

BackgroundData regarding French physicians’ alcohol behaviours are scarce and most studies address this issue within the population of either medical students or residents. We aim to describe and assess the prevalence of hazardous alcohol consumption among French physicians. MethodsA regional, cross-sectional, survey was conducted in 2018 using an online questionnaire among Parisian general practitioners and hospital doctors. Hazardous alcohol consumption was defined by an Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) score ≥ 8. Data were analysed in 2020. ResultsFive hundred fifteen physicians completed the survey: 108 general practitioners and 407 hospital physicians. The median age was 40 years [32−55] and 59 % were women. They considered their physical and mental health as average or bad in 10 % and 8% of cases, respectively. The prevalence of hazardous alcohol consumption was 12.6 %. Among the 65 physicians with hazardous alcohol consumption, 27 (41.5 %) did not considered it as risky and four (6.2 %) mentioned a potentially negative impact on patients’ care. Factors independently associated with hazardous alcohol consumption were illegal drugs consumption (OR 4.62 [2.05–10.37]) and fixed term contract for hospital doctors (OR 2.69 [1.14–6.36]). ConclusionsThe prevalence of hazardous alcohol consumption among French physicians was 12.6 %. Illegal substance users and fix-termed contract hospital doctors were more likely to have risky alcohol consumption. A large-scale national study would confirm the factors associated with hazardous alcohol consumption and could explore the efficacy of preventive measures to insure the safety and health of physicians and their patients.

Evaluation of hazardous alcohol consumption prevalence of university students in Turkey

Abstract Background The aim of the study was to determine the prevalence of hazardous alcohol consumption (HAC) according to gender among university students and associated factors. Methods The study is a cross-sectional study conducted on undergraduate students who were studying at Eskisehir Osmangazi University in 2019. To ensure a representative sample of 26036 students from all grade levels, we used a stratified sampling technique from 11 faculties at the university and the questionnaire was applied to 2349 undergraduate students. The prevalence of HAC was determined with the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT). HAC was defined as getting 8 points or more from the AUDIT. Multivariate logistic regression analyzes were performed to examine HAC related factors in males and females. Results 1250 (53.2%) of the participants were male. The age of the study group ranged between 18 and 35, and the mean (SD) was 21.04 (2.07) years. The prevalence of HAC in the study group was 13.5% (18.8% male and 8.2% female), and lifetime prevalence of alcohol use was 65.3% (74.5% male and 54.8% female). In males; those whose fathers [OR = 1.74; 95% CI: (1.18-2.55)], mothers [1.52; (1.04-2.22)], best friends [2.57; (1.35-4.88)] use alcohol and those who smoke [3.11; (2.06-4.71)], use illicit drugs [2.42; (1.68-3.47)], have depressive disorders [1.68; (1.06-2.68)] were more likely to report HAC. Meanwhile in females, those whose fathers [OR = 1.93; 95%CI: (1.03-3.62)], best friends [6.21; (1.83-21.05)] use alcohol and those who smoke [4.82; (2.53-9.17)], use illicit drugs [4.79; (2.52-9.10)] have depressive disorders [2.96; (1.63-5.39)] were more likely to report HAC. Conclusions HAC prevalence is high among university students. The risk of HAC increases with the use of alcohol in family and circle of friends, smoking, illegal substance usage and depressive disorders. The factors associated with the risk of HAC in males and females are similar. Key messages The university students are at a higher risk for HAC than the general population. Strategies should be developed to identify and prevent university students who are more likely to use hazardous alcohol and the situations that trigger this consumption model.

Alcohol use and its consequences in the Czech Republic.

Alcohol consumption is associated with substantial public health burden. This article summarises available information on the patterns and prevalence of alcohol use in the Czech Republic with a focus on the heavy alcohol use and its health and social consequences. A non-systematic literature review was conducted. The data sources included primarily 3 series of surveys in the adult population, 2 series of surveys in the school population, routine monitoring system of per capita alcohol consumption, routine statistics on alcohol-related morbidity and mortality, and alcohol-related crime. In recent years the registered alcohol consumption in the Czech Republic has been very high; 9.8 litres of pure alcohol were consumed per capita in 2017. Recently, the prevalence of hazardous alcohol consumption in the adult population has reached 16.8-17.6% and harmful alcohol consumption 9.0-9.3%. From 12% to 17% of adult population and 12% of adolescent population were heavy episodic drinkers. Alcohol-related disorders are disproportionately higher (2-3 times) among men. Mortality for alcohol-related causes fully attributable to alcohol (AAF = 100%) and their proportion in overall mortality is on increase. Alcohol consumption as well as the prevalence of heavy episodic drinking in the Czech Republic belongs among the highest globally. On the other hand, declines in alcohol use have been recently observed among children and adolescents. Available data on alcohol-related morbidity indicate stable situation, though alcohol-related mortality is increasing. Alcohol-related burden is rather underestimated and evidence-based alcohol policy should be increasingly implemented.

Background: Hazardous alcohol consumption is a significant public health problem contributing to road traffic accidents in nearly all countries. Despite the fact that motorcycles are involved in more than half of all road traffic accidents in Tanzania, little has been reported about hazardous alcohol consumption among motorcyclists. This study investigated the prevalence and factors associated with hazardous alcohol consumption among motorcycle taxi riders in Kinondoni District, Dar es Salaam. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in Kinondoni District in August 2018 among motorcycle taxi riders. Multistage sampling was applied to select the study participants. Data were collected using structured self-administered questionnaires incorporating the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test. Analysis was done using IBM SPSS version 20. Results: A total of 210 individuals participated in the study. Within the study sample, the prevalence of hazardous alcohol consumption was 61.5% (n=128). Hazardous alcohol consumption was positively associated with a positive family history of alcohol consumption (odds ratio [OR] 11.74; 95% confidence interval [CI], 5.14 to 26.79; P<.001). Protective factors were younger age (OR 0.09; 95% CI, 0.02 to 0.40; P<.001), having a secondary level of education (OR 0.21; 95% CI, 0.04 to 0.99; P=.034), having a primary level of education (OR 0.06; 95% CI, 0.01 to 0.26; P<.001), and being employed (OR 11.74; 95% CI, 5.14 to 26.79; P<.001). Conclusion: A high prevalence of hazardous alcohol consumption among motorcycle taxi riders was reported along with several associated factors. Interventions to mitigate hazardous alcohol consumption among commercial motor vehicle drivers must be developed and implemented.

Is There an Association between Social Connectedness, Social Identity, Alcohol Consumption and Mental Health among Young University Students?

Social connectedness has been identified as a protective factor for a range of health issues however the literature is not conclusive. The high prevalence of hazardous alcohol consumption and mental health problems among university students along with the potential for the university as a setting for health promotion prompted this study. The study aims to explore the association between levels of alcohol consumption, mental health, social connectedness and social identity among university students. Online data were collected from a random sample of university undergraduate students (n = 2506) aged 18 - 24 years old. Outcomes were measured using the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT), the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale, Social Connectedness Scale, Social Identity Scale and measures of paid employment and study (hours), and participation in sports and other clubs. The majority of students had consumed alcohol in the last 12 months (87%). Of these students 38% reported to drink at hazardous levels (AUDIT ≥ 8). When all factors were considered: gender, living arrangements, being a domestic student, hours spent at work, participation in university and community sport, higher levels of psychological distress, higher levels of social connectedness, and lower levels of social identity were significant predictors of hazardous alcohol consumption. The finding highlights the need for the inclusion of integrated, multi-strategy health promotion interventions on campus. Further exploration of the associations between social connectedness and social identity as influences of health behaviors will better inform the development of targeted strategies for specific groups.

Identification of the alcohol abuse in bankers

Este estudo tem como objetivo observar aspectos relacionados ao consumo de álcool enquanto fator de risco para o adoecimento laboral em trabalhadores de agências bancárias do município de Alegrete – RS. Foram aplicados questionários de maio a agosto de 2013 em 94 bancários que aceitaram participar da pesquisa, destes, 58,5% eram do sexo masculino e 41,5%, do feminino, com uma média de idade de 41,54 anos. Dentre os participantes, 14,9% realizavam consumo de risco de álcool, ao passo que 1% dos bancários fazem consumo de alto risco, e 1% apresentou provável dependência. Os resultados indicam prevalência um consumo de risco para bebidas alcoólicas entre os bancários deste município e apontam a necessidade de ações de promoção da saúde destes trabalhadores

Socioeconomic Factors, Hazardous Alcohol Consumption, and Smoking in Patients With Minor Trauma in an Inner-City Emergency Department

Emergency Department (ED) patients show a high prevalence of hazardous alcohol consumption and smoking. The objective of this study was to determine if socioeconomic factors and smoking status help to optimize screening for hazardous alcohol consumption (HAC) in patients with minor trauma. A survey was conducted in an ED in an inner-city university hospital. A total of 2562 patients with minor trauma were screened for HAC (≥ 8 points in men and ≥ 5 points in women on the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test), smoking status, and socioeconomic factors. The median age of participants was 32 years, with 62.1% being male. A total of 84.2% of patients had an Injury Severity Score of 1, indicating minor trauma. Overall, 23.5% of patients showed a pattern of HAC, whereas 46.2% were current smokers. Compared to patients without HAC, those with HAC were characterized by lower incomes, no partnership, living in a single-household, and being unemployed. The strongest discriminative variable for HAC for patients aged ≤ 53 years was smoking status. Gender differences played a role only in patients older than 53 years. Although socioeconomic factors showed a non-equal distribution in patients with respectively without HAC, solely age, gender, and smoking status may provide a successful stratification for alcohol screening and intervention in these patients.

Alcohol use among young adults presenting to the emergency department

To determine the prevalence of young ED patients at risk from hazardous alcohol consumption, to identify high-risk patient subgroups and evaluate the feasibility of use of the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) in this setting. We undertook a cross-sectional survey of 336 ED patients aged 18-30 years, inclusive. All were breathalysed prior to self-administering the AUDIT. A 'positive' AUDIT score (> or = 8) defined hazardous alcohol consumption. AUDIT scores were correlated with sex and trauma diagnosis. One hundred and thirty-one (39.0%, 95% confidence interval [CI] 33.8-44.5) patients were classified as AUDIT-positive. Men were significantly more likely to be AUDIT-positive (49% vs 23%, P < 0.001) and had significantly higher total AUDIT scores (P < 0.001) than women. Trauma patients were significantly more likely to be AUDIT-positive (P < 0.001) and had significantly higher AUDIT scores than non-trauma patients (P < 0.001). Of the six patients who recorded a positive breath alcohol reading, all were AUDIT-positive. One hundred (76.3%, 95% CI 68.0-83.1) AUDIT-positive patients did not report others being concerned about their drinking or had not been given advice to cut down. It is feasible to use the AUDIT screening tool in the ED to identify those at risk from hazardous drinking. In our ED there is a high prevalence of hazardous alcohol consumption in young adult patients, many of whom have not previously received advice to cut down on their drinking.

Hazardous alcohol consumption and sense of coherence in emergency department patients with minor trauma

Background The concept of sense of coherence (SOC) measures the extent to which people are able to cope with stressful life events. Since excessive alcohol consumption may be, in part, the result of failed coping strategies, further investigations between hazardous alcohol consumption and SOC are necessary. Methods Survey in an Emergency Department in an inner city university hospital. Overall, 1833 patients were screened for hazardous alcohol consumption, illicit drug use, smoking status, socioeconomic status and sense of coherence. Results Mean age of participants was 34 ± 12 years and 62% were male. Overall, 23% of patients showed a pattern of hazardous alcohol consumption, 23% had abused illicit drugs and 46% were smokers. Mean SOC score was 48.9 ± 8.6 points, with no difference between genders. Lower SOC-quartiles were associated with significantly higher prevalence of hazardous alcohol consumption as well as illicit drug abuse and smoking. Lower SOC-quartiles were associated with significantly lower values on socioeconomic variables (e.g. lower income, less education). The negative association between SOC and alcohol consumption was independent of age, gender, smoking, illicit drug use and all socioeconomic variables. Conclusion SOC and hazardous alcohol consumption were significantly associated. Our data support Antonovsky's original concept of increased alcohol consumption as a result of failed coping strategies.
