Abstract Background and Aims Kidney complications of cancer patients and cancer in renal patients have increased in recent years. The objective of this study is to evaluate the characteristics of the patients referred to the Onconephrology Unit from January 2021 to December 2021, studying the cognitive and mood status of these patients. Method This is a prospective observational study of the Onconephrology consultation at a University Hospital Center during 2021. Clinical and analytical characteristics of the patients and clinical indication for referral were analyzed. In addition, sleep quality, mood and cognitive status were assessed using validated rating scales (Epsworth, Geriatric Depression Scale and Montreal). Results Seventy-four patients were evaluated, mean age was 69.6(±11) years, 41(55.4%) men, 47(63.5%) had hypertension, 18(24.3%) diabetics, and 11(14.9%) were affected by heart disease. In addition, creatinine 1.93(±1.1)mg/dl, eGFR 39.97(±20.3)mL/min, proteinuria 187[29-515.9]mg/g, and 4(5.4%) had microhematuria. The most frequent cancers were intestinal, gynecological and mammary with 12.16% (n = 9) each. 58.3% (n = 42) of patients had metastatic disease. 48.7%(n = 36) received chemotherapy and 58.1%(n = 43) targeted therapies. Platinum was the most frequently used chemotherapy and anti-VEGF in terms of targeted therapies, followed by tyrosine kinase inhibitors, anti-PD1 and anti-PDL1. The most frequent clinical indication for referral was acute renal failure (n = 36;48.7%) followed by chronic kidney disease (n = 27;36.49%) and proteinuria (n = 5;6.76%). Rating scales were obtained in 51 patients: 49% (n = 25) were snorers, followed by 17.6% (n = 9) with insomnia and 11.8% (n = 6) with OSAS. 27 patients (36.5%) had cognitive impairment. Mild depression was detected in 13 cases (25.5%) and moderate depression in 11.6% (n = 6). 21 renal biopsies were performed, the most frequent diagnosis was acute interstitial nephritis (71.4%, n = 15) followed by thrombotic microangiopathy (19% n = 4). A total of 15 patients (20.3%) died during the year. Conclusion Most patients referred to Onconephrology are affected by advanced oncological disease and consequently had a high mortality. The most frequent indication for referral was acute kidney injury (48.7%). Comprehensive patient care is important, given the prevalence of depressive syndrome. Onconephrology is an example of a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach to improve the survival and quality of life of patients with advanced cancer and renal disease.

Association between depressive syndrome and visual complaints among elderly caregivers

ABSTRACT Objectives To determine depressive syndrome in community-dwelling elderly caregivers; and to test the association between such syndrome and both visual complaints (VC) and aspects of care. Methods This is a cross-sectional study conducted with 332 elderly caregivers. Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15) was used to screen for depressive symptoms (cutoff > 5 points). Logistic regression was performed to identify associations between depression and both VC and aspects related to care. Results Median age of the caregivers was 68 years. The majority was female (75.9%) and took care of a spouse (84.3%). The prevalence of depressive syndrome was 22.6%. The syndrome was associated with VC when it affected activities of daily living (OR = 2.4; 95% CI: 1.37-4.27) and caring for an individual with cognitive impairment (OR = 1.85; 95% CI: 1.05-3.26). Conclusions While measured aspects of care did not exert an influence on the incidence of depressive symptoms, VC associated to functional limitation and caring for elderly individuals with cognitive impairment was associated with such symptoms in the elderly caregivers.

The prevalence and clinical features of depressive syndrome in children with epilepsy in Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital, Jakarta

Background Symptoms of depression often emerge in childrenwith epilepsy, but parents or caregivers are not always able torecognize them.Objective To assess the prevalence and clinical features of de-pressive syndrome among pediatric epilepsy patients in CiptoMangunkusumo Hospital, Jakarta.Methods This was a cross-sectional study on children aged 8-18 years. Child Depression Inventory (CDI) was used as theinstrument for assessing depressive symptoms.Results Depressive syndrome was found in 34 out of 89 subjects.The three most frequent depression symptoms were self-deprecation (via peer comparison), indecisiveness, and pessimism.Frequency of seizures, mode of therapy, and EEG result wereimportant factors in the development of depressive syndrome inchildren with epilepsy.Conclusions The prevalence of depressive syndrome in childrenwith epilepsy was 38%. Vision and hearing impairments are associated with depressive–anxiety syndrome in Italian elderly

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between vision and hearing impairment and depressive–anxiety syndrome in a large population participating in the Faenza Project, Northern Italy. Method: The study population consisted of 7389 participants not affected by dementia, 4408 (59.7%), of whom were women, mean age ± standard deviation (±SD) 71.9 (±7.7) years. Information about previous or current psychiatric symptoms, including sleeping and eating habits, non-verbal language and ability in activity of daily living was used to investigate depressive and anxiety syndrome. A semi-structured interview was administered to survey the presence of sensory impairment. Logistic regression analyses were used to evaluate the association between sensory impairment and depressive–anxiety syndrome estimating Odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI). Results: The prevalence of vision and hearing impairment was 1.4% and 0.2%, respectively, with an increasing trend in people aged 75+ years (p < 0.001). The prevalence of depressive syndrome was higher among vision-impaired participants (20.2% vs. 9.3%, p < 0.001), especially women (22.9%) and persons aged 75+ years (22.1%). The prevalence of anxiety syndrome was higher in the hearing-impaired group (25.0% vs. 11.0%, p = 0.09). Vision-impaired participants, especially women and participants aged 75+ years had have a twofold higher probability to have depressive syndrome (OR = 2.03, 95% CI = 1.21–3.38), and hearing-impaired individuals showed an increased probability of presenting anxiety syndrome (OR = 2.71, 95% CI = 0.86–8.55), although these results were not statistically significant. Conclusion: This study's findings suggest that sensory impairment in older adults can increase their probability of experiencing depressive and anxiety syndrome. Correction of these deficits could improve the quality of life in this population.

Acculturation and the Mental Health of Latina Women in the Women, Infant, and Children Program

Studies have reported discrepant findings about the relationship between acculturation and mental health, often because of inattention to interethnic group differences. This 2003 exploratory study of various Latina ethnic groups attending the Women, Infant, and Children (WIC) Program compared five measures of acculturation and mental health status/utilization. The subgroups differed on language, immigration/migration history, and the prevalence of anxiety attacks and depressive syndrome. The prevalence of anxiety attacks was the highest among those who spoke primarily Spanish, the prevalence of the depressive syndrome was the highest among those with more traditional beliefs, and the use of mental health services was the highest among those with less traditional beliefs. Implications for practice are discussed.

Depressive Symptoms Among Adults Visiting an Indian Health Service Primary Care Clinic

Depression is common among patients visiting primary care clinics. In order to describe the prevalence of depressive syndromes in an American Indian primary care clinic population and to help define the clinical correlates of depressive syndromes in this setting, a clinic-based research study of depression was undertaken by the Indian Health Service (IHS). One hundred and six patients from an IHS primary care clinic were systematically enlisted for participation in the study. Participants completed the Inventory for Diagnosing Depression (IDD). Twenty-two (20.7%) responded with answers scoring positive for a depressive syndrome. Nine of these 22 (8.9% of the 106 participants) met IDD criteria for a major depressive syndrome. A diagnosis of depression, a past history of depression, use of mental health facilities, unexplained pains, and antidepressant medication use were associated with the presence of a depressive syndrome.
